DANTES Sponsored Programs: A Year in Review Jeff Allen, Director, DANTES
T
he year 2020 brought unprecedented challenges to our nation, families, and the DoD Voluntary Education (VolEd) workforce. Although challenging, we managed to have a successful year supporting the VolEd enterprise and helping service members reach their education and career goals. In this issue, we will highlight some of our collective 2020 accomplishments. These shared

accomplishments were made possible by the dedication, innovation, and efforts of voluntary education personnel, Defense education institutional partners, national testing agencies, and postsecondary organizations that are all part of the VolEd community. Thank you for your care for service members and for your dedication and diligence to continue our important mission.

Year In Review
Here is how DANTES, in concert with strategic partners, helped accomplish the VolEd mission in 2020: • Supported deployed warfighters and enhanced readiness by providing education programs in contingency areas in the Middle East, Southwest Asia and Africa. Deployed service members enrolled in 6,270 college courses and received over 60,432 hours of education support services sharpening skills and enhancing lethality of the force. • Collaborated with higher education associations, defense education partners and continued to renew fiveyear DoD Partnership Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreements with over 2,900 academic institutions to provide off-duty educational opportunities and post-secondary education access for service members. • Completed Military Training Evaluation Program reviews by the American Council on Education, where 346 military courses and occupations were reviewed for college credit equivalency, generating 2,794 college credit recommendations, documented on the Joint Services Transcript (JST).

• Enabled more than 30,000 service members to complete over 37,000 exams based on prior learning experience, reducing degree completion time and avoiding over $21M in DoD tuition assistance costs by awarding college credits for testing. • Partnered with 31 states implementing Troops to Teachers grants to enable the delivery of teacher credentialing and job placement services to service members and veterans, resulting in 397 first year, full-time K-12 teachers placed in public schools and over 1,450 employed as full-time teachers substitute teachers, teacher assistants, para-professionals, or administrators for K-12 classrooms. • Supported the voluntary education enterprise by providing outreach resources, developing the VolEd workforce, and supporting the enterprise’s data management. Adjusting to the 2020 virtual environment, DANTES provided 13 webinars and 5 virtual education discussions via Facebook Live. As a result, the Department was able to increase service member awareness of education programs and benefits, increase counselor proficiency to deliver education support services, and manage data for operations and compliance.

The Year Ahead 2021 Deliverables/Goals During FY21, DANTES will continue to support the Services’ needs and requirements to improve the educational levels of the force through a shared service delivery model reducing the cost and the administrative and regulatory burden on the Services. The focus this year includes: • Stabilizing and modernizing the DoD Voluntary Education System (DoDVES), a DANTESsponsored defense business system supporting various voluntary education program management functions. • Optimizing the Prior Learning Assessment credit award process to ensure that the Department continues to have a means to evaluate, document, and translate the human capital capabilities that service members gain from military experiences into college credit recommendations. • Refining DANTES-sponsored education programs and services through continuous process improvement. • Executing a comprehensive outreach, engagement and communication plan to increase the awareness and usage of DANTES-sponsored voluntary education programs.
Thank you for all of the great work in 2020 and looking forward to all that we will accomplish together in 2021!
