Strengthening the VolEd Workforce through Professional Development

Michelle Alexander, Voluntary Education Enterprise Support, DANTES Education and professional development are never-ending areas of career growth. They continue long after earning a degree and starting a career. In recognition of this fact and as part of the Defense Department’s commitment to enable a “viable Voluntary Education (VolEd) community” and to “cultivate a culture of organizational effectiveness,” DoD’s VolEd office and DANTES hosted the second annual Professional Development Institute (PDI). The PDI was held at the DoD Executive Management Training Center, Southbridge Hotel and Conference Center, Southbridge, MA

June 4-6, 2019. This year’s event brought together a cadre of subject matter experts and industry professionals to deliver training sessions to 203 Education Services Officers (ESOs), Counselors, and headquarters personnel from across the Services. These training sessions were specifically designed by the VolEd PDI Working Group to equip installation-level VolEd professionals with the skills to best support the Military Services’ efforts to shape, recruit, train, educate and retain a diverse workforce to successfully execute current and future VolEd Defense missions. http://www.dantes.doded.mil

Throughout the event, participants had the opportunity to: • Translate new knowledge and skills into actionable practices through interactive activities • Receive updates on DoD VolEd policies, programs, and practices from Dr. Jonathan Woods, Director of Voluntary Education • Gain knowledge from industry experts in Veterans Administration (VA) education benefits, ethics, and leadership development • Network and collaborate with colleagues on issues impacting the DoD VolEd environment and community Based on participant feedback, the event was highly successful, with the top three rated sessions ethics, voluntary education updates, and best practices for counseling.

The knowledge, skills, and contacts made throughout the event not only support improving service member educational outcomes but also promote a more effective and professional VolEd workforce.

All participants received training on: • FY2018 DoD VolEd accomplishments, new initiatives, and fiscal year 2019 priorities DANTES Information Bulletin

• Accountability, impact, and the nuances of VA education benefits for service members and veterans • Decision making processes and special considerations to help education professionals correctly navigate ethical dilemmas encountered as stewards of installation education programs • Developing personal career elements that highlight strengths and leadership skills to support professional development and lifelong learning Education Service Officer sessions exposed participants to: • Installation level approaches to assessing the educational needs of military personnel and ensuring academic institutional compliance with DoD policies • No cost marketing and social media strategies for installation level promotion of VolEd • Fostering and leading innovative educational program and delivery practices

he Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), a component of the Defense Human Resources Activity (DHRA), celebrated its 45th anniversary. DANTES personnel gathered to mark nearly a half-century of DANTES providing quality, education support programs and services to military members stationed around the world, including U.S. Coast Guard men and women.

During the celebration, Mr. William Booth, Director, Defense Human Resources Activity (DHRA), thanked DANTES personnel for their dedication to the mission, “Why DANTES? … You’re a leverage function, you make it much easier, much quicker and much more economical to carry out the mission than any individual Service can do by itself… you’re a force multiplier and the beneficiaries are our military members and their families.”

In the words of our director, Mr. Jeff Allen, “While our mission and the methods to accomplish the mission have expanded and changed over the

past 45 years, our collective purpose has remained steadfast ... to support the Services, to support the warfighter and their families, and to ultimately help service members reach their educational goals.

Hot News Parchment Online Transcript Ordering Service

I

n June, the DSST Credit-by-Exam Program launched the Parchment online transcript ordering service. This service provides electronic order and fulfillment for all DSST transcripts and CLEP military test taker transcripts. This partnership eliminates the need for test takers to submit paper transcript request forms, making the process easier and more efficient for everyone.

This online service is easy, secure, fast, and trackable, so you’ll never have to worry about where your transcript is or if you’re school will get it on time.

The new service enhances the transcript experience by: • Providing test takers the option to order and pay online.

• Eliminating the need for test takers to use paper order forms, or mail in checks as part of their request for transcripts.

• Providing test takers easy access to send digital or printed transcripts to thousands of colleges and universities within Parchments network.

Discount Off Retests for Service Members

T

his summer, anyone who takes a CLEP exam until August 31, 2019 will be eligible for 50 percent off a retest of the orginal exam. This means service members who test using DANTES funding can get 50 percent off a retest. This discount will allow service members who do not achieve their desired score on the first attempt to retest without paying the full CLEP exam fee. Spouses, family members, and others who are not eligible for DANTES funding can also get 50 percent off a retest after taking one full-priced exam.

Service members must complete their first CLEP exam prior to registering for their second and must enter the promo code CLEPFIFTY at checkout during registration. The code is valid until August 31, 2019 and can only be used on one exam per test taker. For more information or questions, email clep@collegeboard.org.

Troops to Teachers Spot Light

Brigadier General Jeffrey P. Marlette A Leader In The Field And In The CLassroom

S

outh Dakota has a new commander of the Air and Army National Guard. Brigadier General Jeffrey P. Marlette took over as the state’s 22nd Adjutant General last month.

He’s more than a leader of the state’s military might too, he’s also a Troops to Teachers (TTT) advocate and former educator in the state’s classrooms.

Marlette enlisted in the South Dakota Army National Guard in 1980. As Commanding General, he will ensure the readiness of nearly 4,200 Air and Army National Guard citizen Soldiers and Airman and 950 full-time federal and state employees to respond in times of national or state emergency.

“General Marlette is a leader and a public servant,” said Governor Kristi Noem. “He shares my vision for our National Guard, and together we’ll work to enhance recruiting and training and ensure our troops are ready for any and all missions that come their way…” https://ktwb.

gov-noem-appoints-new-head-of-sdnational-guard/ When not wearing the uniform, Marlette has been active in the state’s school system and actively helping other military members in their pursuit of teaching careers. In his civilian career, Marlette led Gettysburg School District as Superintendent and Elementary Principal.

He later held a similar role in New Underwood School District. But most importantly for Troops to Teachers, he diligently worked as an advocate of the TTT program. Marlette was a member of the Northwest Region from September 2017 to June 2019, serving TTT as the State Representative for the program.

LeRoy “Le” Gaub, Army Colonel (retired) and Program Manager for Troops to Teachers Northwest Region (NWTTT), is sad to see him go, “Losing Jeff is a huge loss to the NWTTT region, as it is rare to find a person eminently qualified in both the military and education professions.” The Northwest Region serves Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

Troops to Teachers wishes General Marlette success in his new mission. Having an advocate of the program in charge of thousands of troops means the state may also find more qualified military members serving a second career in the classroom.
