Now that we’re in the full throes of winter, it’s time to make sure your home is staying toasty while running as energy-efficient as possible. Here are four of the biggest tasks to prioritize this month for a perfectly winterized home:

1. Insulate!

Proper insulation will keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Take this time to check door and window seals to identify any spots where air is entering or escaping the home, then add weatherstripping as needed.

2. Pamper Your Heater

Is it functioning properly? When was the last time you cleaned or changed the filters? You don’t want to be stuck with a broken or inefficient appliance on the coldest day of the year. Extend the life of your unit by cleaning it, updating insulation, inspecting ductwork, and scheduling a tune up if necessary.

3. Inspect Your Fireplace

Over time, residue is deposited in your chimney which increases the risk of it catching on fire. If you can’t remember the last time you had your fireplace or chimney cleaned, call a chimney sweep today. Then check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for good measure.

4. Turn Down Your Thermostat

The Department of Energy says we can save about 10% on our heating bills by turning our thermostats down 10 to 15 degrees for eight hours each day. The best time to do that? Overnight when you’re bundled up in bed. And, if you haven’t already, consider a smart thermostat, which can help ensure temperatures are perfectly set for the right times of day.
