The custom of making New Yearʼs resolutions has been around for thousands of years, but it hasnʼt always looked the way it does today. The concept of New Year’s resolutions dates back to the ancient Babylonians, some 4,000 years ago. They were also the first to hold recorded celebrations in honor of the new year. Once deeply rooted in religious context, New Year’s resolutions today take on a sort of tongue in cheek approach. We’ve all made the same New Year’s resolution promises to ourselves. Lose weight, save money, and spend more time with the family.
How often have you found yourself rising at dawn in early January armed with new sneakers and an ambitious attitude to drop 15 pounds by spring, only to surrender two weeks later to a large pizza and a weekend of binge watching something on Netflix. We’re all guilty of that, I’m sure. As a person who works closely with children, I’m always interested in hearing what they have to say. I sat down with a group of local Danville kids and teens to hear what they have in mind for their New Year’s resolutions.
