Meet the
Seaberg Family: Sharing a Life Filled with Love and Theatre Arts By Eve Marie Shahoian, Danville Resident since 2013
W
hen two people share a passion for both their work and each other it is a very special union. Stephanie and Jeff Seaberg, recent newlyweds, have known and worked together in theater over the last 14 years, and it was their love for theater arts and teaching children that brought them together. Jeff has lived in West Danville since 2003 and Stephanie since 2010. Over time, while working together and growing Theatre Performance Workshop (TPW) and KAOS camp in Danville, Stephanie and Jeff fell in love. It’s like a fairy tale love story, which they most appropriately fulfilled at their themed and theatrically inspired wedding this September in Bodega Bay. On their most special day, Stephanie wore her Wizard of Oz ruby slippers, tapping three times, as Dorothy would do, and Jeff wore his signature hat from the show Me and My Girl. Stephanie and Jeff set off to the Island of Maui for their honeymoon, where Jeff had proposed to Stephanie two years earlier. As Stephanie explains, “My best friend got engaged a year earlier and had a very elaborate proposal, and I jokingly dared Jeff to try and top him.” Jeff ended up proposing to Stephanie in a helicopter during their vacation, and Stephanie refers to that trip as “amazing”. I think it’s safe to say Jeff topped her friend’s proposal! Stephanie is not new to Danville, having attended San Ramon Valley High and Diablo Valley College. Her parents are Steve and Janet Lauck, her sister is Anne De Santes and, her late brother is Kyle Lauck. Jeff was born in Aurora, Illinois, but moved to the Bay Area in 1989, the same year Stephanie moved here from San Joaquin Valley. His parents are Carl and Joanne Seaberg, and his three siblings are his brother Jerry and sisters Kim and Kris. Stephanie’s grandfather was George Lauck, owner of Lauck’s Bakery in Fresno, Ca. Stephanie grew up hearing that “ he sold the most pies and cakes under one roof on the east coast.” In honor of Lauck’s Bakery, Stephanie used a vintage Lauck’s Bakery cake knife to cut her wedding cake. With a family history of baking it’s not a surprise that in Stephanie’s spare time she loves to cook, and refers to herself as a “Culinary Magician” and jokingly proclaims herself, “The best cook in Danville.”
In their home, Stephanie and Jeff have a motto “There’s always room for one more.” Their home is often bustling with friends to celebrate many occasions, as they host an annual Oscars Party, Christmas dinners, and many cast parties. Stephanie used to host Sunday night sit down dinners with college friends where they always raised a glass and said, “Food is love!” before each meal. To this day she and Jeff still say this. In addition to theater, Jeff loves the Chicago Cubs. It’s no surprise that Jeff shed tears of joy when the Cubs won the World Series back in 2016. Stephanie explains, “It was right after Jeff proposed to me.” Both Stephanie and Jeff lead very active lives contributing much to theater arts in the Danville community and throughout the Bay Area. Theatre Performance Workshop is their pride and joy. It is an after school class that performs original plays by Jeff and Stephanie during the school year at Village Theatre. During the summer months they begin KAOS Camp, which is a two week long drama camp that local kids flock to.They have both been involved in theater their entire lives, both on stage and off. Stephanie appeared in The Wizard of Oz at the Pittsburg Community Theatre last year, and Jeff was the Director/ Producer/Writer for the madcap comedy Wigged Out, which played in Danville for four years. Jeff is also a regular performer for Tri-Valley Rep shows, which are held at the Bankhead Theatre in Livermore. He most recently played Nicky the Mobster in Bullets Over Broadway. Jeff was awarded the Tri-Valley Hero Award in 2012 for his work in play writing. Stephanie has been a drama instructor for Golden Oak Montessori in Castro Valley for the last two years, where she directs

to underfunded families. Jeff and Stephanie have six unofficial children whom they call family. They are: Mallery Martinez, Hannah Sylwanowicz, Mike Anderson, Gordon Brown, Angie Motter and Rachel Maneloveg. They met all of them through TPW when they were little children and have grown into an extended family together. They were even bridesmaids and ushers at their wedding, and celebrate birthdays, Christmas, an occasional road trip and almost never miss a graduation. Stephanie shares, “They even bring their boyfriends and girlfriends over to meet us, and now in their mid twenties and spread across the state they still come over when they can.”
original plays that she writes for the schools. When not teaching, Stephanie is a costume designer for Chanticleers Playhouse. She won the “Best Costume Award” in 2017 for the production of The Addams Family. Stephanie is also the secretary to the PAC McGucken Committee and won the “PAC award for achievement” in 2016. Jeff and Stephanie attend an annual actor’s camp in Occidental every Labor Day weekend called McGucken. “It’s a great opportunity to workshop ideas, promote shows and perform.” For each show Stephanie gives away three full scholarships to kids who qualify for FLP, which is a wonderful way to bring the arts
Stephanie and Jeff love living in West Danville. They enjoy walking to restaurants, all the local hangouts and have their regular routine. Stephanie explains, “Monday is fried chicken night at Revel, happy hour at Maria Maria on Wednesday, Bridges is their “Cheers”, and on Saturdays, Jeff walks to the farmers’ market to buy sunflowers for me.” Since they both teach in the community they really enjoy going to events like Hot August Nights and running into their students, both young and old. They especially love seeing their students during the Danville tree lighting because the kids are full of holiday spirit.

ecades ago, the kitchen was hidden in the back of the house. It was a place where meals were prepared, and dirty dishes were washed. Fast forward to 2018 and the kitchen has a much different role. Today the kitchen is the focal point of the home, the place that brings everyone together, the kitchen is paraded in all its beauty and warmth at the very center of the house. Technology advances and changing social dynamics have contributed greatly to the rise of the modern kitchen. There is a far bigger focus on open concept homes that revolve around the kitchen, so everyone can be together. As with any modern design trend, clean and simple styles have become favorites for homeowners with natural light becoming an essential aspect of the overall look and function of the kitchen space. Technology has entered the kitchen in full force and not just in the form of fancy gadgets and appliances. Smart kitchens are an evolving

Non-Responsive Listing Agent- What Can a Buyer Do? By Barbara Wilson, Realtor, SRES, Coldwell Banker DRE # 01404824
I
have been asked what one can do when a client has written an offer, but the listing agent is not responsive. What should the buyer’s agent do? The buyer’s agent should of course have called the listing agent before writing the offer so the listing agent knows to expect it. Ideally, the Buyer’s Agent (BA) would have requested an in-person presentation of the offer to the listing agent, if not both the listing agent and the seller. But if an in-person presentation isn’t possible, the BA should call and text the agent to let them know they sent it, with a “readreceipt” for confirmation. But if the basics have been done, and the listing agent is still unresponsive, there some additional things a BA can do. 1. Call the listing agent’s broker or manager or he BA’s Broker or Manager can make the call. 2. Go to the listing agent’s office to present the offer to the broker. If the listing agent IS the broker, they usually have an assistant. Try to find out when the listing agent is expected in the office, and make sure the assistant gets a copy of the offer in a clearly marked envelope stating “Offer for the purchase of X property,” obtaining a dated and timed signature of receipt. 3. One can Express Mail or use a delivery service to send the clearly-marked offer to the broker’s office with a signature required. But if these are either not possible or unsuccessful, more dramatic efforts may be required. 4. The BA can go to the seller’s house when the seller is there and explain. “I have an offer for your house, but I have been unable to reach your agent. Would you please ask your agent to contact me?” And if this is not successful, then I can think of only 2 more options.

The BA could leave the sealed ”tamper-proof” envelope with the seller, again, clearly marked and instructed that the envelope should be opened by the listing agent, obtaining a signature and date from the seller indicating time of delivery of a sealed envelope labeled “offer”. 6. The BA or buyer can make a complaint to the local and state Real Estate boards that the listing agent is preventing the presentation of an offer. There are clear instructions on how to do so on the Realtor’s Association sites. Armed with documentation of the emails sent, dates of text messages, signed or refused express mail packages, date and time of conversation with seller, the board should be able to get a response or take other action. It is our ethical and legal responsibility to present all offers, even those presented after we are in contract. So make sure you get your fair hearing, and if your offer is not accepted, your agent should be able to provide you proof from the listing agent that the offer was actually presented to the seller. Most of the agents you will ever encounter are ethical and responsible. But when we do encounter that “bad apple”, it is good to have a plan.

“D
oes this look good on me?” is a question parents often hear in the morning when they side-step the pile of discarded clothing strewn on the floor while urging their children to hurry. Getting to school on time can often be problematic. Avoiding chaos in the morning is just one reason parents like school uniforms. However, there are many other benefits to choosing a uniform school. Uniforms promote a sense of belonging and school pride. There’s a camaraderie that develops when students feel they are part of a larger group. Elementary school students often beam with pride because they “match” older students; they feel important being part of the same school community. Middle and high school students, who may not be thrilled with the idea of looking like everyone else, frequently bond when grumbling about the dress code. Many don’t realize that having just a few clothing choices can simplify their lives. For example, when the only option is either a white or blue oxford shirt, the pressure to impress others with the latest brand name is eliminated. Minimizing students’ focus on appearance enables teachers and administrators to emphasize good grooming. Perhaps more significant is that all-important first
impression. With uniforms, students and teachers are more prone to make a judgement on someone’s demeanor rather than their ability to afford trendy clothing. For parents, less social pressure on their children can translate into happier kids. Content children and financial savings are win-win for parents. Students who wear uniforms typically have fewer distractions during the school day. By design, uniform schools adopt clothing that is tailored to look good but is not provocative. An oxford or polo shirt is a staple of many schools with uniform dress. Pants or skirts that are dress code appropriate are not skin tight or excessively short. Students don’t spend time worrying about what they look like or evaluating what others are wearing. Another benefit is reduced teasing; it’s difficult to make fun of or laugh at someone wearing the same thing you’re wearing. Students focus on schoolwork is often sharpened, allowing them to concentrate on learning. Some argue that uniforms don’t allow students the freedom to express themselves. This perception limits expression to outward appearance. During the course of the school day, students have the opportunity to share their ideas, create art and music, and interact with their peers—all forms of expressing themselves. Some students find that having a weekday uniform makes dressing in “street clothes” on the weekend something to look forward to. So, even if a dress shirt, tie, and blazer may not be the first choice for students, being a part of a school community, less peer pressure, and a focus on learning are long-term benefits you can’t beat.

ith Christmas fast approaching it is a time for entertaining and festive holiday parties. This is a quick, simple, and delicious recipe to make and take as a hostess gift. I like to package them in little cellophane bags tied with colorful ribbon.
Chocolate Pecan Brown Sugar Shortbread Bars

Ingredients: • • • • • • •
1 cup unsalted butter ( 2 sticks ) cut in small pieces 2 cups flour 1 cup brown sugar ½ teaspoon salt ( I use sea salt ) 1 teaspoon vanilla 9 ounces dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 cup chopped pecans ( you can also use walnuts )

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 9x13 inch baking dish with parchment paper. Spray paper with nonstick spray.

Cream the butter and sugar in a food processor. Add vanilla. Add the flour and pulse on and off until the mixture looks like corn meal. Press into prepared pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes until lightly browned. Immediately after taking out of the oven, pour chocolate chips over. Spread with a long spatula. (If the chocolate sticks to the spatula spray it with nonstick spray.) Immediately sprinkle nuts over chocolate. Allow chocolate to cool completely before slicing.

Self Discovery Begins On Stage By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010
T
he thrill of the spotlight is an adrenaline induced roller coaster that is often hard to understand. Some would call it an acquired taste, like cilantro or Tarantino films. You either love it or hate it. The very thought of standing on stage while hundreds of eyes are fixated on you sounds terrifying to some, yet hundreds of children flock to the charming and intimate Village Theater that occupies downtown Danville on Front Street just around the corner from the famous and beloved oak tree.They are there to fulfill an unbridled desire to set their spirits free on stage. It is all done through the artistic outlet of the Theater Performance Workshop and KAOS Camp. Theater Performance Workshop, also known as TPW, is a beginners course in acting for kids ages 7-14 that meets twice a week at the Village theater in Danville. After 10 weeks of rehearsals, a weekend long public performance is showcased for friends and family. KAOS Camp encompasses all the same goals and core values as TPW, condensed into a two week long summer camp at Hap McGee Park. Over the last 15 years, TPW has been home to more than 4,000 young and eager actors and seen over 90 productions in its tenure. To call this seasoned theater company unconventional would be quite the understatement. As the students arrive to class, they are greeted with a ruckus call to order by the director who enthusiastically proclaims “Friends, Romans, countrymen” then the students all cry back “Lend me your ears” and then take their seats for rehearsal. It is one of the many quirky aspects of this program that the kids love. Each and every play is hand written and custom crafted for the students and class. You won’t see any fanciful Disney characters in these plays, but you also won’t see
anyone playing “Tree #6” on stage either. The writers prefer to spread the story out to every character, giving everyone a chance to shine on stage for a moment. Every show also includes a random dance number, where children spontaneously break out into a choreographed dance that gets the audience’s toes tapping. It is the creative brain child of resident actor and writer, Jeff Seaberg who has been a rather familiar face in Danville these last 20 years. He was the writer, producer and director of the madcap hair salon musical, “Wigged Out”, which ran for several years and was a staple of the Danville scene.”The journey of self discovery really begins on stage,” he proclaims, as he staples and stacks a pile of scripts. The scripts are on their way to a rehearsal for his latest show “A Very Jingletown Christmas.” Seaberg has been producing Christmas themed musicals in December for the last seven years as part of a TPW holiday special, and so far, they have been very well received. “We’re a small operation with only my husband and myself, and a handful of assistants, which is a good fit for us.” If your household has an aspiring young actor that is pining for the spotlight, Contact the Danville Community Center at (925) 314-3400.

he cost of waiting to buy is defined as the additional funds it would take to buy a home if prices and interest rates were to increase or prices were to decrease, and interest rates were to increase. If you are wondering if the rise in mortgage interest rates continues, doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t that mean that home prices will decline? In actuality, mortgage rates tend to rise when the economy is growing, but factors like inventory and cost of construction drive housing prices. In the Danville area, for every 1% increase in interest rates (and rates currently are up almost 1% over last year), housing prices would need to decline between
9 and 11 percent for a buyer to have the same purchasing power as they had when rates were lower. The last time mortgage interest rates reached levels reported in August and September of this year was in 2011. Current predictions are for year-overyear national home price appreciation to be 4.7% in the period of August 2018 to August 2019. Home prices rose 5.5% in the same period year-over-year ending 2018. Discovery Counseling Center’s Anti-Bullying Fundraising Show By Michael Copeland, Resident since 2002
I
t was standing room only on Thursday, October 25th at the Village Theatre in downtown Danville, as Discovery Counseling Center hosted their 5th annual Evening of Music and Laughter, a fundraising show benefiting DCC’s anti-bullying program. This year’s show brings back (by popular demand) the very funny comedian Bryan Kellen in addition to a rare acoustic performance by San Francisco rockers Static & Surrender. There was also a surprise special appearance by Hays & Company. Not very many people know that bullying is widespread and perhaps the most under-reported safety problem on American school campuses. Contrary to popular belief, bullying occurs more often at school than on the way to and from there. Once thought of as simply a rite of passage or relatively harmless behavior that helps build young people’s character, bullying is now known to have long-lasting harmful effects, for both the victim and the bully. Bullying is often mistakenly viewed as a narrow range of anti-social behavior confined to elementary school recess yards. Perhaps more than any other school safety problem, bullying affects students’ sense of security. Discovery Counseling Center of San Ramon Valley also offers comprehensive and affordable assistance to school age kids in times of crises, emotional need and life transitions. Their highly regarded anti-bullying program has already been instituted in many of the elementary schools in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. Kathy Chiverton, Executive Director at Discovery, says funds from this event will help Discovery Counseling Center to expand their reach throughout the district. “Every dollar raised at the anti-bullying fundraiser goes directly to the cause and the Quest Foundation, a private foundation located in Danville, matches 2 for 1 all funds raised with a generous donation.” With a successful event, over two thousand 4th and 5th graders will be able to participate in Discovery’s powerful and effective antibullying course. Past shows have included such talented performers as Nashville country artist Paul Jefferson, L.A. singer-songwriter Courtney Randall, Rocker David Victor (formerly of the band Boston), STUNG – the preeminent Police tribute band, and, the incredibly versatile A Cappella group from Vanderbilt University – The Meledors. Additionally, the show has featured the stand-up comedy talents of Tony Camin, David Vanavermaete and Anthony Hill. This year’s show boasted over 20 corporate sponsors including Title Sponsors - Interior Motions and Links for Life Foundation. I’m very honored and proud to be a part of Discovery Counseling Center’s Anti-Bullying Fundraiser again this year.The passion
of all the people who work so hard to produce a show that raises funds and awareness for such a useful cause is both heart-warming and contagious. I jumped at the chance to come back and do my part. DCC’s fall fundraising committee includes myself as chairman and the evening’s Master of Ceremonies, in addition to Zach Haller, Nicole Fornaci, Mary Verstraete, Mark Heavey, Alex Hays, Ceal Barlett, Eric Johnson, Michael Taylor, Michele Milz, Karen Cordeiro, Greg Betty, Mike Mooney, Dave Jones and Sylvia Luneau. Relieved that this year’s event was so successful, the committee will be back at work soon enough planning for next year’s show. is the season to be jolly and while your pets love holiday cheer, there are a few things to be cautious of. Cats love holiday ribbons and shimmering tinsels, but if eaten, these can cause some major problems for your furry friend. Never leave your pet unsupervised near your tree and be sure it’s properly secured. Unstable trees can fall and injure your pet and ingestion of pine needles or tree water can cause major health issues. Other holiday plants to be cautious of include holly, mistletoe, poinsettias, and lilies as these are toxic to your pet. For the perfect holiday treat give your pet a new pet treat rather than leftovers and as always, keep all sweets, such as chocolates, and any unattended alcoholic beverages away from your pet. Healthy pets ensure a happy holiday but if you think your pet may have ingested something, seek medical attention immediately.
