Aptly named Papa Bear, this is a whimsical marvel of a wingtip. Its bold, almost authoritative make most interestingly sees the armrests protrude from the backrest instead of from the seat, while the bright blue conveys a sense of spirited joy. Available at Fred Lives Here.
A standout of BoConcept’s 2015 collection is the Fly Armchair. Made primarily from rich leather and coated with shimmering fabrics, this is a perfectly inviting addition to the home for one to fly towards escape from the bustle of a busy schedule. Available at BoConcept.
From Fred Lives Here comes the almost eponymous Wing chair, notable for its large backrest with an aesthetically harmonious curvature atop it. The option of fabric or aniline leather versions along with its neutral colour make it a fitting choice even for pickier owners. Available at Fred Lives Here.
Combining the handcrafted precision of Poltrona Frau with high-tech from Audi design is the “Luft” (German for air) Armchair. Warm, soft leather surrounded by cool, technical aluminium brings about a contrasting yet perfect equilibrium, making it an oasis of relaxation. Available at Proof Living.
Lievore Altherr Molina studio has produced the Pillow chair for Andreu World, and this lush offering certainly lives up to its namesake. Generously stuffed from the armrests to the seat and backrest, the chair seeks to amplify the restive nature of pillows outside of the bedroom. Available at Xtra Design.

REVOLUTIONISING THE ART OF MAKING COFFEE

here to aid us in our caffeine fix. The long-established high-end coffee machine specialist unveiled this new model which joined its compact class F line. A first class addition, it is a fully automatic machine and the first in its category that is equipped with a Thin-Film-Transistor (TFT) colour display, which makes operating it with its Rotary Switch easy, efficient and intuitive. Coffee lovers now spend less time preparing coffee, and more time enjoying their preferred cups. Jura thinks about the individual; as everyone comes with their own tastes, up to four products can be individually programmed via the start screen. Taste is also ensured due to Impressa F8’s innovative Aroma+grinder, a Swiss-engineered innovation that guarantees optimal flavour, while grinding fresh beans at twice the speed, yet gently enough to preserve their subtle and natural aroma. Caffeine connoisseurs who enjoy their drink topped with light-as-air foamed milk only require a simple turn of the switch to activate the integrated steam function. The Impressa F8 has succeeded visually as well. It was awarded with the 2014 Red Dot Best of the Best Award, the pinnacle competition of Product Design, largely due to its formal, clean appearance

yacht,” cites Sean, divulging how aesthetic brilliance backs up the ingenuity of concealing and smart storage solutions. In relation to sizing matters, Sean explained that one of the perks of being someone who worked on both small neighbourhood projects and very large scale global projects was the joy in introducing and transferring concepts between them. The best part is both types of projects will be infused with a creative input that they do not usually get. Apart from working on small-spaces, Sean also admitted that the portion of the design world that interests him the

most is mid-range priced products. Due to people at large appreciating quality and design more, Sean finds more are purchasing his products as well. Another strong point of interest for Sean was creating products that can stand the test of time. “I think my stuff looks really good slightly banged up,” chimed Sean, cheekily confident in the fact that his attention to longevity and value pay off in this aspect. Sean would understand this fully; his own home is filled with prototype versions of his releases. They accompany an eclectic range of vintage material from around the world, as Sean enjoys keeping things that nobody has seen before, including a fingerprint stand from Italy in the 1950s. Speaking of home, when asked on what was next for him, he illustrated what he wanted to accomplish with OM. “I’d like to cultivate relationships and stronger ties in sophisticated and multi-cultural Singapore; by undertaking more projects, I could open a local office, giving me excuses to spend more time here!”

TOWN TALK
Grooming The Modern Artisan Last November, the SFIC Institute, NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute and the Singapore Workforce Development Agency officially announced the opening of a new carpentry campus. Approved by the Polytechnic of Western Australia back in May, the facility is designed to train and develop a pool of skilled local craftsmen for the Singapore furniture industry. Located in accessible Yishun, the center consists of two fully air-conditioned classrooms and a workshop equipped with a vast array of woodworking machinery and appropriate tools. At the campus, trainees undergo a six-month structured course on carpentry that will improve the skillset and fill the shortage gap of local carpenters. Upon graduation, participants will then receive SFIC Institute’s Apprentice Certificate in Creative Craftsmanship, WDA’s WSQ Certified Operations Specialist, and PWA’s Record of Result and Certificate of Participation. Since its introduction, the programmed has garnered strong local support and keen interest from job seekers; to date, the first class of graduates with ages ranging from 24 to 66 have

e spend most of our waking hours in the office- as professionals, the workplace is where our senses
and skills convene to etch the chapters of our careers, making it a location bearing much significance. As the Salone Del Mobile 2015 draws nearer, it is of little surprise that one of the most anticipated exhibitions is the SaloneUfficio’s innovative concept: Workplace3.0. “Technology has changed everything, leaving us freer to organise things the way we want them and enabling us to work anywhere, at home, in the train or even in the park,” stated famed Italian architect, Michele De Lucchi, who will personally curate and oversee the collateral event on the workplace thematic in April. Cramming the exhibition with multitudes of design ideas and triggers for inhabiting workplaces in their wildly-varied present day forms, the event is undertaking a mammoth task by simultaneously focusing on each individual component of the workplace. IN THIS GREAT FUTURE, YOU CAN’T FORGET YOUR PAST
P
osters have been around since the 1870s- Paris based artist and lithographer Jules Chéret developed a breakthrough printing process
allowing artists to mass-produce intensely coloured and textured images in a large, economical format. By the tail end of the 19th century, posters became a dominant means of advertising and communication throughout European and American cities, a striking and cost effective way for companies to communicate with their target demographics. Original poster art is much more than decorative art- a reflection of changing culture of the times, it captures the essence of bygone eras, and for many, posters remain synonymous with great art deco design. It is no surprise that vintage poster art is increasingly popular and collectible, and this past November, ION Art of ION Orchard Singapore had the honour of hosting East Asia’s only established vintage poster dealer, Picture This Gallery of Hong Kong. Bringing to Singapore examples of the finest collectible posters, the exhibition showcased works from leading designers from the 1910s to 1930s, together with the best designs of the mid-20th century era. Promoting domestic consumables ranging from food and alcoholic beverages, to tobacco and consumer products, these advertisements offered amazing insights into popular culture and trends of days past. Apart from consumer needs, the groundbreaking exhibition featured much sought-after travel and transportation posters, offering the promise of exotic destinations via the escape from humdrum city life. With a particular focus on promoting regional destinations in Asia, these collectibles illustrate the long-lost romance of travel’s “Golden Age”, when such journeys were exclusive to only a wealthy few. The best travel posters possess sharp images and vivid colours, luring travelers to elaborately exciting and exotic destinations. Finally, the exhibition also encompassed the glamour that is pop culture posters, including original movie advertisements portraying icons such as Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn, covering now-classic epics like the Star Wars saga and the James Bond series. Additionally, Picture This Gallery also featured some of the more important artists of the 20th century, with contemporary art poster pieces available for public view. “In this great future, you cannot forget your past,” sang legendary lyricist Bob Marley, and Picture This Gallery graciously provided us with such a stark reminder as we admired its timeless pieces with awe, momentarily gaining access to such precious time capsules.

tudio apartments have always maintained a sliver of popularity among our population,
especially so for bachelors or bachelorettes, or young couples. Located at an extreme end of the size spectrum, it is as challenging to design and conceptualise a small space as it is to layout an expansive villa home. Victor Ng and Kelvin Gan of Elements ID were tasked to work on this 1+1 bedroom studio apartment located in the East for these new homeowners. According to the duo, they opted to infuse the home with a modern hotel theme, indulging the relatively small space with creature luxuries that is supposed to leave a lasting effect due to the elevated dosages of comfort that emerge from the surroundings. A subtle but dominant trait of the home is how the entire area save for the entrance and bathroom is carpeted; an instant connection to a hotel stay, infusing a holiday atmosphere

The duo’s definition of modern living is to ensure a home is of a clean style, functional and liveable, which were the guidelines they took to undertake their mission. From the get go, the home grabs you with a startling infusion of luxury living. A lush re-decked timber flooring spans the rooms of the home, accompanied lushly with the latest top form fittings from Space Furniture. A carefully re-configured layout to maximise open spaces allows for a neat split level living. approach designers to implement off-kilter aesthetic concepts to the interiors. Perhaps it is the notion of unbridled optimism and brave new starts that drive these couples in venturing confidently towards unconventional design patterns. Such is the case with this newly acquired Built-To-Order flat in Anchorvale, where Terence Teo and his team at I-deal House were the brains behind this exciting project. A confluence of raw Industrial chic and pared down Scandinavian concept clearly reverberates throughout the home, characterised by the intelligent spatial manipulation and clever usage of exposed pipes to enforce the theme. The neat dining area resembles the tuckshops of yesteryear, and is situated next to the living area, leaving abundant space in the communal area. This minimalist approach is accentuated by the open concept free from divisive barriers, along with the nifty wire mesh screen behind the dining table’s head board, allowing for an unsegregated view of the main area.

More wire mesh is used in the aluminium framed door leading to the kitchen. Here the industrial look is achieved via laminate finishes on the cabinets, namely. The appearance of seemingly rough finishes instils a rugged character in the kitchen, a hallmark of industrial interiors. Also, the aforementioned pipe placements play an integral role in making an industrial statement. Pipes hoist appropriate mood adjustable lights in the communal and kitchen areas, while also serving as the frame for the media console, immediately making it a focal point of the living room. The pipes that segregate the wardrobe in the study also carry on its aesthetically riveting functionality. In the master bedroom, where the pipes were foregone, very fitting pendant lights hang from the ceiling, unveiling another side of the industrial Scandinavian concept. Terence is especially glad with his labour of love, as it was an idea that both the homeowners and him collaborated on and saw to fruition. Not only does he feel that he accomplished a project that is new and fresh in the market, Terence shared that he believes the demands for industrial Scandinavian living will only increase, and eventually be popular enough to be deemed ‘conventional’.

It is apt then, that the latest project from Nativ9 Design echoes the hallmarks of modern living, while leaving their indelible eco-friendly fingerprints on the creative process and finished product. Over at the Riverparc Residences condominium, the team at Nativ9 has conceptualised a home that is high in functionality and purpose, despite being space challenged. The Nativ9 design team elected to meet the homeowner’s wishes of creating a resort-themed home, in tandem with Nativ9’s ecological vision. In order to achieve this, a home extolling a garden of sorts was in order. The mission is accomplished with the notable prevalence of greenery in the living room by way of a vertical glassed garden. More greens follow suit in the master bathroom where an island getaway ambience prevails. Complementing the resort feel beautifully is the installation of Burmese Teak as decking material for the ceiling and walls. sprawling semi-detached home, tucked away in a more private region of the island can only
mean sublime exclusivity. Kavin Lee, Design Principal of Metamorph Design, adopted a calculated design process in order to arrive at the luxurious look with a contemporary touch that the homeowners were seeking. Traversing past the remarkable Brazilian granite façade that represents the house’s exterior, the interior’s geometrics was easily evident. Using the ceiling as the main focal point, the lounging and dining areas are defined by an angled frame above. With a base colour theme of white and dove grays from the marbled flooring and walls, the effect is effortlessly modern and deliciously surreal.

The ensuite walk-in wardrobe echoes a luxe designer boutique experience with open shelving, warm wood flooring and everything within reach. | Largely marbled from floor to walls, the master bathroom is a luxurious sanctuary. The dry kitchen is sleek with a marbled island counter and glossy cabinets in pristine whites.
The dining area on a raised floor shares open space with the living room. A look above, one realises interior depth of the house. A frame effect runs along the perimeter of the void, defining the space here. Illuminating the space with a hint of drama, is a trio of dandelion-esque pendant lighting from Space Furniture. Nearby lies the quintessential dry kitchen island counter for entertaining pursuits, spotless in smooth white surfaces. Upstairs where the private space resides, a darker colour palette unfolds beckoning a more subdued tone for a more relaxing ambience. In the master bedroom for example, the bed is backed against upholstered panelled walls and cocooned by an arial frame in angular prose. Sharing a design

Ensuite is a luxurious bathroom laced in marble flooring and walls which leads to a walk-in wardrobe. As Kavin can attest, a successful project is all about meeting clients’ needs from the get go. Architecturally the house appears simple in design devoid of fussy details. N
otable Montreal-based architect Henri Cleinge is known for his contemporary housing projects along with his work on commercial spaces
within his home state. His eponymous firm prioritises the design exploration process and self-expression, creating an experiential elemental architecture which respects simplicity and essence, with an approach that emphasises light and space defined by raw materials. This month, we are privileged to enter the very home of this reputed architect, and it is evident that his selfconceptualised home echoes his design principles, which in turn imposes his diligent personality inside and out of the property. Located in Beaumont, Henri was inspired to create a home to be experienced by all five senses, leading the house to evolve as an exploration project. An understated design was used as the house is situated in a mixed use neighbourhood, where residential duplexes coexist with midsize industrial buildings. However, despite the seeming integration, Henri’s expertise resulted in his home featuring distinguished attributes as compared to the neighbouring buildings. Challenging spatial composition, Henri audaciously created a modular square plan which led to one unit comprising the ground and second floor, while a second unit makes up the second and third floor, leaving the Beaumont with heightened ceilings and space over two floors. This contrast to conventional wisdom resulted in a spatial tour de force; a response to the sun’s movement, allowing each unit the fullest exposure to three orientations rather than two, taking maximum advantage of the southern sunlight. Perhaps the house’s most remarkable feature is that that nearly all exterior walls are built from concrete which is

exposed to the interior as well as the exterior, with insulation in the middle. By combining rich primary materials to large modular square volumes accentuated with an abundance of natural sunlight, the house provides a compelling series of framed experiences. The house’s core is the largest volume of space, where a double height living room is defined by concrete and wood surfaces; the perfect foil for one another. The softness of walnut cabinetry coupled with the cedar ceilings contrast the hard textured, industrial looking concrete walls, a repeat theme throughout the few segments of the house creating an elegant effect. The reduced pallet of materials used provides a disciplined vibe, making it one of the most muscular of dwelling places we have encountered thus far.

ôtel Americano is not your regular luxury getaway; aptly located in the heart of Chelsea’s art
gallery district in New York, the former parking garage is a celebration of contemporary art and a passion for Manhattan. The creative re-usage of the venue leaves it with an industrial Manhattan veneer, albeit possessed by a warm Latin soul largely due to their owners, Mexican entrepreneurs Carlos Couturier and Moises Micha. The ambitious award-winning hoteliers collaborated with another award-winner; Mexico City-based architect Enrique Norten. Together, they transformed the Chelsea parking garage into a 10-storey metal mesh-wrapped boutique lodging. Beneath the sophisticated façade, a nod to the building’s industrial past, a quietly dynamic space awaits, featuring two restaurants, a lobby café and two basement bars. Through the partnership with Enrique Norton, Hôtel Americano’s architecture reflects the urban location yet provides guests with a sense of escape. The 56-room lodging has decidedly Mexican touches meshed with Japanese influence, along with typical New York detail, of which one of them is the installation of tablets in each room, allowing access to recommended destinations in the vicinity. Upstairs, one is treated to the magnificent New York skyline, a view that can be enjoyed at the rooftop restaurant or from the comfort of the sky pool, which is intelligently converted into a hot tub during the winter. In the basement of Americano downstairs, the bar El Privado is as its name suggests. Slightly hidden away, it is a reservation only tavern. The muted palette and soft lighting is intended to sooth and pamper guests after they have soaked in the city’s energy, and while it may boast exclusivity, it never treads into pretentious territory. To cap off a busy day, guests retreat to the rooms, of which each are designed to be a spot of calm relaxation.

Japanese zen quality permeates these urbane ryokan dwellings. Materials are natural, walls are white, floors are concrete, upholstery is leather and lighting is low. With the addition of the aforementioned tablets that glue the city to fingertips, guests immediately feel at home. It is here that the ryokan ideology is fully realised, as the Japanese traveller inn hospitality is transferred to the metropolitan art district. The devil is in the detail, though, even the bathrobes leave a lasting impression; unusually but successfully made from denim, they add to the lasting lure of the Americano!

homes with… large spaces
When dealing with small bedrooms, every inch counts. Adding wall mounted shelves above a desk provides additional display and storage space. As these shelves and desks are built into the wall, it takes up little room and maintains the bedroom’s open path.
TIP
Frame out the wall with an ornamental trim with paints or wall paper to define this cosy space. This adds a touch of laidback luxe and elegance to the room. Alternatively, you can choose to install a window seat or a mini library complete with a wall storage unit.

TABLE TIME. A coffee table has been elevated into a must-have for most of modern living rooms. However, not only is the coffee table suitable for displaying pictorial collections; add functionality by getting a table with useful, layered storage space. Tiered coffee tables are excellent for being both aesthetically pleasing and functional. BED TALK. Beds come in handy, namely the storage platform variety, perfect for loft or townhouse living. Available in a variety of designs, these beds come with drawers beneath or along the sides of the bed; customised ones even allow you to elect where these drawers protrude from. This provides the equivalent of having a dresser or chest of drawers beneath the bed, making it an optimal solution for bedrooms short on space and storage room.
03
GO CUSTOM. Built-in furniture allows you to create a smooth transition between spaces, a coherent decoration since it looks like a part of the home itself, allowing for a beautiful blend especially in contemporary or minimalist interior designs. Because of this, a large built-in piece of furniture looks more slender than a free-standing one with similar dimensions. Built-ins also come with immense storage space, at times occupying an entire wall, but without making the room feel smaller. Also, lighting can be easily integrated into the built-in furniture, serving great ambience! Ultimately, the best kind of built-ins are the tailored ones, specific to your needs.
kitchen crusader MAKE MEAL PREPARATIONS A JOY WHEN YOU HAVE AN EFFECTIVE SPACE THAT WORKS
GO GADGETS. A decent hood with both aluminum and charcoal filters help remove grease and smell respectively, going a long way for homeowners who want hassle free cleaning and almost nonexistent gaseous emissions. SIZE MATTERS. Do not purchase items that do not spatially complement each other, i.e. a wok too big for your sink. So please factor in the size of your various appliances and segments of your kitchen. PLAN AHEAD. Plan carefully for storage spaces before executing the renovation phase. Installing accessories to store appliances, much a multi layered cabinet will do a lot of good in the long run once the kitchen begins to get overcrowded.
01 02 03
TIP
Function first then style is the golden rule in the kitchen. Always place the stove and sink nearby in a triangular layout where the fridge, stove and sink are within close proximity for easy accessibility. This makes kitchen movements much more seamless and simpler.

The Luna Collection. Luna represents the Moon, as well as the alternative name of Artemis, the moon goddess of Greek mythology. Hong Ming christened their latest collection as such to represent grandeur, noble aspiration and creativity. Hong Ming is proud to present the first ever 100% blackout fabric, utilised with avant-garde technological advancement, providing multi-functional uses. In general, regular coated fabrics made for blackouts are re-coated up to a maximum of 3-pass coatings to absorb direct light sources. Due to Hong Ming’s unending flair for going above and beyond satisfaction with product quality, they
surpassed standard norms towards a quality product and went ahead with producing 4-pass coated fabrics. Like previous Washable Blackout Curtains produced by the company, fabric composition does not contain any harmful or toxic substances and materials are imported directly from the United States with stringent quality checks. The curtains are then tested in a local laundry under 70° C, while the fabrics used are labtested and proven that it maintains the capability to block heat and UV ray penetrations, along with its noise reduction and water resistant qualities.

ways to create the perfect home office
1 COLOUR CONNECTIVITY Where a home office is concerned, you are the king in the jungle and whatever inspires you goes! Choose a colour theme that stimulates creative thinking. Yellow is thought to stimulate cheerful, positive thinking, while warm tans and soft blues help keep stress down. If you must have white, layer it with greys and natural hues as an all-over white room can be clinical, gets dirty easily and can be fatiguing. A flexible way of adding pops of colour is with great artwork, an attractive area rug and furniture. If you have the space, indulge in an extra chair or loveseat with its own lighting for a change of scenery.
