DESIGN IN MIND
It’s important to have a vision, chase it a step at a time, and then make it a realisation. It might sound cliché, but this is the reason why I do what I do. Abie Abdillah, Designer, Studiohiji
young designer in Indonesia, he found himself in embroiled in a battle royale against other hungry design teams that also sought rattan as a primary source material for their forms. However, the latter occurrence, along with the rise of social and new media have helped rather than hindered. Exposure of the rattan design market is increasingly prevalent, while Abie has utilised technology to speed production processes by quicker means of communication. Abie’s attention to proper time management, while honing his skills with rattan continuously has seen Studiohiji grow, and he is now aided by a pool of interns, with the intention to hire full-timers in the near future. Excitement reaches fever pitch whenever Studiohiji embarks on the creation of a new collection, where Abie admits he begins annoying the factory; the man is very thorough, focusing on the tiniest of details, explaining that it makes customers more appreciative of the toil undergone by the entire production team. This is exactly what drives Abie. Be it awards won, recognition or even regular customer feedback, the head of Studiohiji believes it is important to cherish whatever they have accomplished. Professionally, Abie shared that his goal was to be featured at the Salone del Mobile one day, the crown jewel fair of the design world. Studiohiji has already begun inching towards the promised land in Milan; pairing with Singapore-based distributors, For The Common Goods, the firm is creating waves in the South-East Asian market. According to Abie, rattan is not just a material he works with, but something that has grown into his passion, and he is determined to make it his expertise. With such dogged determination, Abie Abdillah clearly shows why many have been touting him for sustained success.

extra baggage Philips and internationally renowned media artist Nils Völker have collaborated to produce The Breathing Wall, an interactive art installation aimed towards educating Singaporeans on air health. Displayed at VivoCity, the custom-built installation marks Nils’ first collaboration. Made from 180 plastic bags that selectively inflate and deflate in controlled rhythms creating wavelike animations across the wall, each sequence of fluctuation created lively movements reminiscent of how we inhale and exhale. Nils’ signature style combining physical computing and art to create unique and distinctive pieces encouraged and engaged local audiences, asking thought provoking questions on what we breathe in every day.

oing against the grain is a romanticised idea that requires a substantial skill set and
immense dedication to detail. A triumph like this Seletar Hills terrace is a testament of artfully woven unconventional design, as conceptualised by Principal Designer Angela Tantry and her close-knit team at Metaphor Studio. Changes were made from the outside the moment development commenced, and such deviation from design trope is prevalent throughout the home. Sinking the entrance and tearing down the original door, additional space was paved creating a more welcoming sight, especially with the influx of natural light into the home. Eschewing demarcation favoured by many homes, we see a continuous flow in its stead with wood veneered ceilings lengthening from the exterior to the insides. Likewise, the raised platform from the porch extends and acts as the first step of the staircase within, combing through the foyer towards its destination. An interesting factor is how
An open flow at the entrance, conventional doors removed allowed for natural illumination of the lovely glossy black granite steps that begin from the outside, and continue on to be the beginning of the staircase inside; also on the outside are clever storage solutions, hidden behind the wood feature panels.

HEIGHTS These days, you can make your patio or balconies as stylish as your living room with comfortable sofas, lighting and rugs. Designed to hold their own in the face of elements and treated for all weather use, they can in some cases be left out in the sun all day and simply jet-washed. When it comes to indoor planting and imbuing the outdoor vibes inside, don’t restrict yourself to a few small pots. Be brave and fill your home with tall, striking palms, cacti or lush greenery. We are loving the idea of wall gardens. A clever take on a traditional outdoor trellis is to grow a dramatic display of ceiling-height plants in your living room. With a burgeoning variety of outdoor essentials to choose from, there really is no excuse in being sloppy decorating your outdoor extensions.
