table talk WHEN ONE SURFACE IS JUST NOT ENOUGH Few things beat the practicality of a good table – especially when one is equipped with multiple surface potentials. Whether tiered or nested, here are our picks of standout staples for your favourite space.

The Torei collection of graphic tables were designed by Luca Nichetto for Casina in 2012, but have now been extended with new finishes and shapes offering wider choices of pieces for custom arrangements, resembling a colourful jigsaw puzzle. Whether it is a Carrara marbled square, or stained red for the rectangular and round models, Torei, with their varying shapes and sizes can be paired and intersected as desired! Gianfranco Frattini mixed minimalist form with exponential function with his 780/783 Low Tables crafted for Cassina. A set of four stackable low tables are presented, beechwood stained and black lacquered, with a reversible plastic laminate top featuring either black or white colour choices. Available at Dream Interiors. The Prismatic side-tables comes in black and white variations, a stylishly unorthodox mini-table set that allows for placement of your smaller items. Best placed side by side, the duality of the Prismatic set is clearer and a suave addition to contemporary homes. Available at Fred Lives Here. Kazuhide Takaham designed the Marcel T nesting tables for Cassina, made with bent resistance welded chrome plated steel bar frames. Table tops come in either transparent, sandblasted float glass or with glossy or matt polyester lacquered finishes. Perfect for utilitarian or industrial themed interiors. Available at Dream Interiors.

Bontempi Casa presents the Giro, tiered tables that can be converted to fit an extensive seating arrangement. All that is required is the rotation of its crystal top, leading to its opening not unlike the zooming in and out of a telescopic device. Available at Lifestorey. For the daringly unconventional, the Ibride Rex features musculature in its legs, emulating the lower half of a fourlegged creature. Ultimately, with its deep blue finish and handsomely unusual surface area, the Ibride Rex is perfect for homeowners who allow their imaginations to have no boundaries. Available at Fred Lives Here.

Minotti’s Benson table exhibits a true cosmopolitan spirit. An authentic dialog between formal elegance and the rich history of Italian design, the value of high craftsmanship along with the rigours of its industrial design capture contemporary trends in this masterpiece. Available at Marquis Interior.

These five nesting tables emulate the rainbow, with its varied colours yet sharing similar triangular-shaped surfaces and rounded corners. Designed in 1951 by Charlotte Perriand for rooms in the university city of Antony, near Paris, they were unfortunately not put into production till recent times. Thanks to Cassina, the fortune is ours, as these semblances of unfolding petals are yours to own! Available at Dream Interiors.

A series of mobile tables from Casamania, Chariot does not stray far from its namesake due to the combination of the three simple elements combined to form it: wheels, trays and its structure. A lovely ode to Roman history, and also a convenient piece of roving furniture. Available at Lifestorey.

three’s not a crowd Leading home appliance manufacturers Tecno have conjured another solution to your daily cooking needs. The latest additions to their cooker hood family, models TH 930, TH 931, TH 933, TH 989 are a step up in the measures to eliminate fumes. In our South-East Asian households, stir-frying proves to be a popular method of cooking. To combat this, the brilliant team at Tecno have conceptualised a three motor system for their cooker hoods, which allow for a more uniform suction, as compared to their previous two motors. Slim and sleek, these hoods easily fit into any type of kitchen styles. The models differ in terms of button configuration, either in futuristic LED touchscreens, or regular protrusions, suiting the different preferences of potential users, tradionalists and modernists alike. Available at leading electrical retailers. Visit www.tecnogas.com.sg for more information.

blurred lines between public and private places act as the central concept that binds the split level together, while simultaneously bringing to life the middle, and darkest, portion of the lane house. Additionally, the decorative elements added over the previous six decades were removed, and large openings were created on the frontal space to improve light qualities to each apartment’s public spaces. The colour black was chosen to make the house “disappear”, allowing one to experience the importance of the connecting public stairway for the split section, a vital part of urban life in Shaghai circa the 30’s. By bottling the spirit of the historic past and coupling it with newer abstract insertions for modern needs, Neri&Hu salvaged and breathed new life into a lane house in a neighbourhood whose fabric of identity is sadly dissolving too soon.

THE QUICKIE ON CEMENT SCREED FLOORING 1

One of this material’s advantages is that it can be poured directly onto the existing floor without any levelling and, once sealed, it’s fairly lowmaintenance. Lightweight versions, which can be used on upper floors, are also available, but if you intend to do this, it’s best to ask a structural engineer for advice.

2

Resin flooring has a soft, flexible finish that’s seamless, comfortable to walk on, hygienic and deadens sound, too, so it’s a great option for residential kitchen projects.

3

Gain a real wow factor by opting for a gloss finish, but beware - resin doesn’t have the hardness of polished marble or concrete, so the shine will eventually become matt and will need maintenance to bring it back to its former glory.

4

It’s also good to remember that as resin is a handapplied system, there can be minor flaws in the finish - maybe not one for perfectionists!

MAINTAINING A CONCRETE SURFACE 1

Concrete countertops are vulnerable to staining and etching from citrus, red wine, and oil, but you can mitigate this by making sure your countertop is properly sealed. Use a penetrating sealer and consider waxing your countertop once a month, which will buy you more time to clean up spills.

2

There’s also the option of a topical sealer, which is more difficult to apply (and may give the countertop a bit of a plastic-y feeling) but more stain proof.

3

How your countertop performs will depend a lot on what kind of sealer you use, so before you choose one, do a little research into what maintenance will be like with that particular finish, and how often (if at all) the sealer should be re-applied.

Unconventionally, the typical living room space is situated on the other end of a home and does not necessarily act as the anchor of the home- uniform spatial allocations were the choice for the common areas, and this daring move was pulled off well, considering the sofa space resembles a larger cosy corner.

the apartment. The mirror features continues in the private spaces inside albeit in a subdued tinted shade. The guest room has the versatile reflective element lacing one adjacent wall which simultaneously adds a cosy ambience and magnifies the floor space immensely. Unlike the neutral shades dominating the areas outside, the bedroom exudes a hint of playful air with a melange of organic patterns on the walls and carpeting. Less is more seems to be the rule of thumb here as the spots of colour are reigned in at a maximum three. Of course, not to be outdone, the master room is an epitome of Kelvin’s contribution to the luxurious elegant character of the home. Originally a four bedroom unit, one of the smaller bedrooms was duly and necessarily sacrificed to enlarge the splendour of the finished master room. Where a wall once stood dividing the spaces lies an eclectic shelving unit that poses as an arc- both part library and part display. Truly a den for the homeowners to retain autonomy, the resting space is segregated from the study, work and relaxation opposite sides of the same coin, the divisive line being the wonderfully unorthodox arc. Well, Elements ID cheated a little, admittedly. A spot of relaxation evidently managed to creep into the home workspace- a posh daybed. We strongly feel the homeowners do not mind though!

In this apartment, a lively cooking space stands pretty behind partial glass walls and maximising visual space effortlessly, while a white colour palette is maintained here, giving the entirety of the main common area a clean uniformity. David is especially fond of his concealed fridge set at the fore of the setup. Without missing a beat, the private spaces of the washrooms are equally lushly furnished. The floors of both the bathrooms are made from black galaxy granite finishing, a deep shade with lovely sparkle smatterings. The walls here are made from homogenous Italian tiles, classily textured and a natural complement to the black galaxy granite, while the protruding slab of granite present in the shower stalls provides added exclusivity to the bathroom, and in turn, maintaining the luxurious, chic vibe that permeates the home.

GOOD WOODS Sustainably chic furniture for the green home. With conscious living, you don’t have to compromise on design. Here are our sustainable chic picks that will ensure your favourite spaces stays stylish amidst nature’s bound. The collection designed by Vito Selma uses up-cycled woods and production excesses from the manufacturing floor in a number of his design pieces. Aside from recycling woods, the Cebu-based designer only uses highly renewable wood materials such as bamboo and pine as these woods get re-harvested relatively quickly and does not hurt the environment. For the urbanist, there is reclaimed teak to turn to at local furniture store Mountain Teak. The industrial chic furniture in store are made from reclaimed teak certified by the Forest Stewardship and are obtained from old houses, bridges or boat decks in Indonesia. The store’s new collection Brooklyn by Karpenter, showcases contemporary minimalism with mid-century influences. Ideally made for the nature-loving urbanite. The Brooklyn collection is built with various species of 100% FSC-certified reclaimed wood, showcasing a patina of varying shades from dark to bright brown colours with streaks of warm tones. What’s more, these home accompaniments are beautiful to look with an equally engaging story to tell. Each is lovingly handcrafted and will only get better with time – and that is always a good upcycling start.

onjuring memories of Granny’s furniture, rattan will make many think of decades gone by. Thankfully, this durable fibre is

getting a new modern twist. Highly versatile as furniture, it can read as elegant, funky or downto-earth organic - which means it crops up in all settings. Add to the fact that it’s lightweight, solid and airy, the appeal of rattan can only grow. As the search for an organic and sustainable lifestyle continues along with modern concepts of re-purposing, up-cycling, renewing and recycling, we clock in with the cane expert, Louise Andreasen who takes earth-saving measures back to traditional roots and deal only with bare essentials. Completely handmade and absolutely natural, the third generation in Sika Design shares with us her green hopes and voice behind her designs. The full collection of Sika Design is exclusively available at Dreamweave Concepts.

rattan production in the tropical regions of South and Southeast Asia. There are different types of rattan palms, such as high or low climbers, single stemmed or clustered rattan species. Some have very short and underground stems. Several rattan species are known to reach lengths of up to 300 metres. Rattan grows best under some sort of tree cover including secondary forest, fruit orchards, tree plantations or rubber estates. As a result rattan planting indirectly protects tree cover, along with forests. Rattan sheaths have spines for protection, along with ‘whips’ that are also covered with spines. These play a major role in supporting the rattan as it grows over trees and other plants in the rainforest. The material wins in sustainability during its harvesting and processing as it provides an alternatives to logging timber in areas where forests are scarce. In addition, rattan is easier to harvest than timber, convenient to transport and grows faster than trees. Unlike bamboo, rattan is solid and pliable hence making it conducive for weaving and shaping furniture.

Getting in touch with nature is easy when you have a slice of garden indoors. Whether you decide to go big or small, we check in with the experts with some quick tips and ideas to make that indoor garden possible.

WALL DUTY In order to ensure a lasting impression for homeowners and guests alike, Elements ID spared no expense in conceiving a tropical respite with this vertical garden facing the lounge area. Chief designer Kelvin Gan has observed that vertical green walls have proven to be the popular choice in Singapore, especially due to space constraints faced by many. A good choice would be situating the gardens in a semi-outdoor setting, like a balcony to simplify maintenance. COMFORTABLE HOMES, ESPECIALLY THOSE CARRYING A MODERN RESORT THEME, ARE CURRENTLY POPULAR. WE AIM TO REJUVENATE AND RELAX OUR CLIENTS THROUGH SUCH GREEN DÉCOR. THAT EDEN FEELING Cris highlights that Idée Etcetera has two different design styles when it comes to approaching green décor. The first of which sees them use garden-inspired ornaments; for example, potted plants and small trees in areas like the media console room, kitchen. Locations CRIS CHENG,

The second method features an immersive “real” garden style, where Cris and team change either a window or entrance area into a semi-Eden. Walls are grilled up with the help of indoor flora, resulting in the ever increasingly popular greenwall. Basically, a portion of appropriate space will be dedicated to undergo this transformation.

The Sengkang flat features an Eden-converted balcony window, complete with a greenwall.

Both spots are fused with fresh and easy to maintain carpet grass, which make for a comforting touch. This small closed terrarium named Mr. Plumpkin, from Mossimoto, is sure to make the minds of viewers wander, formulating the words to the proverbial ongoing sales pitch.

Gloriously green capsules of goodness For even the most botanically inept, terrariums are super easy to make and incredibly low-maintenance. Terrarium specialists Hedge Garden believe that a bottled miniature ecosystem of plants, are increasingly popular in homes no matter the size or type. Sizewise, terrariums fit many of our local homes, especially with the limited personal space we have to deal with. Alternatively, larger and more elaborate terrariums are rising in popularity as statement centerpieces or as house warming gifts. For a personalized touch, Mossimoto specializes in bespoke terrariums made primarily with moss. Aptly called mossariums, the bottled greenery requires little maintenance and perfect for the bustling lifestyles. The team at Mossimoto goes above and beyond when it comes to crafting a mossarium. Customers can request a precise scenery and preferred characters. Hot favourites include couple or love themes while scenes like a couple by the sea, a couple in a park walking their dog or a couple having a picnic under a tree. In fact, the talented team at Mossimoto pride themselves in perfecting the beach and landscape scenes that requires water as part of design.

SELF-CLEANING FISH TANK THAT GROWS FOOD

I

magine a smart aquarium which doubles up as a herb garden to perk up your kitchen corner. The AquaFarm, is essentially a portable aquarium

which functions as a closed-loop ecosystem where fish feed the plants, and the latter cleans the water, making it habitable for the fish. This sustainable farming method of “Aquaponics” is a combination of aquaculture (raising aquatic animals) and hydroponics (plant growing sans soil), using only three gallons of water which is 90% less water than regular farming. Fish are known to produce waste rich in ammonia, which can become toxic for your aquapets over time. However, beneficial bacteria in the Water Garden’s plants converts these ammonia into nitrates. These nitrates make for amazing food for the plants! As the plants are naturally fertilised by ingesting the nitrates as nutrients for growth, it results in the cleansing of the water, making the tank inhabitable for the fish with minimal effort. A retail package includes a three gallon tank, organic seeds, water pump, all natural aquatic supplies and fish food, five growing pots and a growing medium. The Aquafarm only supports a Beta Fish such as the colourful miniature fighting fish variety which you can easily purchase at a local pet store.

FROM TOP This is the Water Garden’s plant silo, perfect for producing a simple herb or leafy garden atop the tank. | Your one-stop station towards harbouring a closed-loop ecosystem.
