As I rambled along Dominick Street on a lazy Sunday in the city, I met a young backpacker who had just arrived in Galway for a three day visit. I immediately whipped out my copy of the Craic in Galway magazine, so she would have the full low down on what’s happening during her whistlestop tour. I was one proud editor, as I was able to hand her a comprehensive events and listings guide, with a daily diary, to ensure she wouldn’t miss any of the Galway experience. It really is why we started this crazy venture. She probably thought I was mad. As she asked for directions, I found it easier to walk her to her destination, as we were on the same path. As soon as we reached Cross Street, she was whisked around by zealous dancers outside Buskers, who were so enthused by the rhythms of the Galway Bay Jazz Band emanating from the bar, they had to share it with our American traveller. She laughed as she was twirled around, a backpack still on her shoulders, and joined in the merriment on the streets of the city. What an introduction. As we welcomed her, we also welcome you to the 24th edition of our little but large magazine. A big ‘hi’ to all of our Citylink readers, we hope you have a safe journey, and enjoy all of our news, views, features and photos.

Happy Reading, Sure it’s all a bit of craic!

alway composer, Gerard Fahy, has written the musical score for Michael Flatley’s new show – Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games. Ger is part of the talented Fahy family, and performs with his musically gifted sisters, Máirin and Yvonne, in the rousing Trad On The Prom show at the Galway Bay Hotel – a music and dance spectacle celebrating 10 years this year. Ger has come together with former Girl’s Aloud star, Nadine Coyle, who will star as The Goddess Erin in the new production. She will perform the title song live on ITV, as they celebrate 20 years of Michael Flatley as a world renowned dancer, musician and choreographer, in a TV special, which will be aired on Sunday, June 1st at 8pm. “To be singing the title track is an absolute dream,” says Nadine, “it’s such a fantastic song which perfectly captures the energy and drama of the show.” The new show is “turbo-charged”according to Flatley in an interview with Piers Morgan, “we’ve got

4

technology that is mind- blowing. I wish I had it back then, but at least I have it now.” Ger has toured extensively with Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance as musical director and later the Feet of Flames Victory Tour. He was also the founding member of the chart topping band ‘Furry Village’ who’s hit single ‘She moved through the Fair’ spent several weeks at the top of the charts and is a prolific composer, who has had compositions covered by the world famous Boston Pops Orchestra. Steeped in musical tradition, his grandfather, Thomas Whyte, was one of the founding members of the famous Ballinakill Ceili Band and his aunt was the legendary fiddler, Aggie Whyte. From an early age, he has played whistles, pipes and composed many compositions, winning several All-Ireland titles by the age of nine. His ethnic tradition influences greatly his present musical style. You can catch Ger and the talented Trad on the Prom team every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at the Galway Bay Hotel for Trad On the Prom.

Reach for Ryan

Black Tie CRAIC atThe Meyrick PhotosBy Darius IVAN

A special night took place at the Meyrick hotel to raise vital funds for Moycullen’s Ryan Croker (25), who remains in hospital in Australia after sustaining a serious spinal injury. It was a light hearted evening, filled with fun and entertainment, as guests dined on a sumptuous three course meal at the

glamorous black tie event. MC Noel Cunningham gave of his time freely and was enthusiastic throughout, as he led a game of heads or tails, brought his comedic timing to the raffle and guided us through an impromptu auction. Once the meal was over, everyone took to the dance floor as the

musical stylings of More Cowbell took us late into the night. Currently, Ryan has regained movement in his arms, but not in his fingers and legs. Doctors in Perth have been in contact with doctors in Ireland with a view to having him transferred and all funds raised will help to bring Ryan home.

oston Mayor, Marty Walsh, will lay the foundation stone on the new Emigrants and Diaspora Centre, to be built in his late father’s home parish of Carna, Connemara, in September. An exact date for the visit has not yet been finalised, but he is due to arrive in late September to a place he describes as “coming home”. It is very much a family affair for the son of the west, as his mother, Mary O’Malley is a native of Rosmuc and his father, John, hailed from Callowfeenish, near the village. The centre will be built at the site of the old parish hall in Carna village, as a place to link the diaspora at home and abroad, and provide a living picture of the history of a rural, Irish speaking west of Ireland community. It will be built on the footprint of the old hall, which has fallen into disrepair following a serious fire five years ago, and will have an information library; emigrants remembrance garden; a café overlooking the Atlantic; events hall; fitness room and visitor information. Mayor Walsh is an ambassador for the project and his return in September will be “a great occasion,

without a doubt,” according to local journalist and committee chairman, Máirtin Ó Catháin. “Marty is a Connemara man in everything except he was born on the other side of the Atlantic,” he says. “His victory in the Mayoral elections was one of the greatest occasions in Connemara and the result will always stay in the memory of the people. I have had the honour of knowing Marty and the Walsh family for a long time, and they have given our community great status in Boston. When he comes to Connemara, he always says ‘I am coming home’ and the laying of the foundation stone will be an emotional and special occasion. He has written to us that it will be a particular honour, given his connections to the area, and I am sure the bonfires will be lit all over the place!” While his full schedule has not been confirmed, and the dates may change due to his packed itinerary in his first year as Mayor of Boston, Máirtin hopes Marty’s visit to Galway will allow him time to “relax, walk around, and meet the people, as he always did”. “There will be a great welcome for him,” he concluded.

f you have ever wanted to skinny dip for charity, then your chance has come. Galway is home to Ireland’s first dawn ‘Dip In The Nip’ in aid of the Hand in Hand children’s cancer charity and it is taking place on Sunday, June 1st. We are sworn to secrecy on the location, but you will find out as soon as you register for this great cause. Since its’ inception, the dip has raised over €300,000 for charity. It is not a nudist or naturalist event and the beaches are chosen with privacy in mind. In fact, the majority of dippers have never skinny dipped before,

and many have expressed relief at the earlier-than-usual start! The event itself can be over very quickly, so to create a wonderful party atmosphere, there will be zumba dancing prior to the dip to get everybody warmed up, and hot refreshments afterwards. There is also a best dressed naked dipper competition, with a lovely Voay gift set for the winner, so get those wigs and body paints at the ready. The main sponsor for the dip this year is Mission Possible, a Galway-based peer-to-peer outsourcing website. To register log on to www.iregister. ie/dipinthenip.

alway City Council could do more to help small local businesses, according to proprietor of Murder On The Menu, Bruce Henry. Bruce made headlines after paying his €150 litter fine - for a poster he placed on private property - in small change. It was a protest against the appeals process. He argues that a ‘stay’ should be put on any fine while the appeal is being heard, rather than receiving letters asking for payment throughout. Bruce would like a system introduced whereby small business owners could pay a signage subscription to the council, and in turn, place posters

in designated areas, which are not a hazard to traffic or pedestrians. “As a start-up business owner, I feel that more could be done to support us,” he says. “Advertising and getting the word out is very expensive and many of us can’t afford to pay for a billboard! There is a solution, and I would be more than willing to pay a subscription to the council in return for signs; posters are a reasonable and affordable way to reach a wider audience. This could also be done for election posters, so they are placed in designated areas only, and not on every pole in town. My fight was not with the people on the front line, they treated me with the utmost respect. I wish I could have reached the decision makers a bit more,” he said.

very Wednesday night, the King’s Head on High Street comes alive to the rousing beat of a proper seisuin, as Trad at the Head kicks into gear. The free weekly performance brings the best of local Irish dancers and musicians to the stage as they get down and dirty with the rhythms of traditional Irish music and song. As the fast tempo of fiddles, bodhrán, accordion and guitar spill into the air, the dancers bring us back to the origins of Sean Nós

and brush dancing, as well as displaying different styles of Irish dance. Trad at the Head is not a concert performance; rather it takes us home to the old style session, where musicians gather in the company of a cosy historic pub environment. Many pop in for a bite to eat first, for some hearty fish and chips, steak, or seafood chowder - there is plenty to choose from on the menu - at the Good Food Ireland approved venue. Afterwards, you can sit back and enjoy the free Trad at the Head group and take in the best craic that Galway has to offer.

A

unique study of Galway through the eyes of painter and illustrator Mark D Smith will be on display during the Galway Fringe Festival in July. Mark has captured the faces of the city in an exhibition which highlights the vibrant characters of Galway, who are regularly spotted out and about. The portraits are informal, as the sitters posed where he found them, and were asked about their journey to the city of the tribes. Mark found his own way here after being inspired by Spike Milligan to read Irish writers. Having studied at the Camberwell School of Art in London, he ran a successful illustration agency in Covent Garden, before the words of Niall Williams’ Four Letters of Love brought him to Ireland. He bought a Galway farmhouse and spent three years restoring it, converting the old dairy

into a large studio. “What started out as a quirky series of paintings of men who wear hats evolved into an intimate portrait of the local characters of Galway City and in particular those who ply their trade on Shop Street,” he says. “These are people we all know well. We interact with them on a regular basis, whether it’s sampling a delicious doughnut from Danny on the market or listening to James play the banjo. They enliven the streets of Galway with their individual characters, their performances, style of dress and huge personalities.” Today, Mark teaches art classes in life drawing portfolio preparation after school study for art Leaving Cert students, landscape painting, still life and animal portraiture from his studio in the Bridgemills. Galway girl, Laura Fox, has walked away with the title of ‘Miss Sunday World 2014’ and has secured her place in the Miss Ireland 2014 contest. The glitzy finale took place in Lillie’s Bordello in Dublin where ten girls took to the catwalk in the hope of winning the crown; after already being selected from hundreds of applicants to compete. How does it feel to have beaten over 183 entrants for the title of MSW 2014? I put a lot of work into going for MSW and I was a bag of nerves, but to have won against so many beautiful, smart women makes me so feel so proud. You had barely taken one crown off before it was time to put on another. How does this title differ for you from your experience as Miss Galway 2013? I loved being Miss Galway- anybody who’s met me knows that! This year however I feel the pressure is on

18

in a major way, I’m representing a national paper as well as my county- I was the only Galway girl in the final. But I’m looking forward to showing everybody what us Galway girls are made of!! How will you prepare for the Miss Ireland final on July 19? I train with Results Ireland in Lisbaun Industrial estate 3-4 times a week. Aidan up there is literally kicking me into shape. Miss Ireland will be taking us to the adventure Islands for 2 days, so I’ll need to be as fit as possible for that. Ruth in Heaven Scent has a tough ol’ job making sure my skin, nails and brows are in tip top condition and Mike Anthony is still looking after my locks- 3 years on and I wouldn’t go anywhere else! Tell us one interesting fact about you. I’m a published poet!

• 7pm: Our fitness queen Dara Kelly will pull those punches as she embarks on her first white collar boxing match in aid of the Galway Hospice at the Menlo Park hotel.

X! O F a r u a L

What are you most looking forward to as MSW 2014? Working in Dublin a lot more; doing shoots for the paper is definitely going to be the biggest thing for me. As part of my prize, I get to go to gigs and festivals around the country, so I can’t wait to find out who I get to see!! What fashion trends can we expect to see you wearing to the Galway Races this year? Oh I’m so very excited about the Galway races- they are by far my favourite time of the year. I have been working closely with PIA Galway on Middle Street and Mary White Millinery to plan some outfits. Everybody differs but for me it’s a well tailored dress in a striking colour- I always find myself in black so I try to take a step out of my comfort zone for the track-simple accessories and of course no outfit is complete without

a beautiful headpiece. What do you love most about Galway? Will your new title see you relocating in the foreseeable future? The people. Everybody is so easy going and up for a laugh. I’m only going to be this young once and have an opportunity at this once. So hopefully I’ll be up in Dublin soon enough to make myself more available for job opportunities. When you are not busy modelling and winning beauty pageants how do you like to relax? Relax - I haven’t heard that word in a while! I’m very simple, take away, pj’s, netflix! What will you use your new title to help promote? I’m going to help with local based charities who really need the exposure and fundraising. The Galway

Autism Partnership (GAP) is a fantastic organisation and it has absolutely no government funding. After two years in the making, the team are now fully equipped, and were beaten 2-0 by the South Kildare Soldiers. The Warriors and Soldiers are part of the Irish American football league, IAFL-2, which is

in its inaugural year. The Soldiers scored 2 points by tackling the Warriors’ quarter back in their own end zone. The Warriors had a 3 point 34 yard field goal by Daryn Tully, but it was called back because of a penalty. It was “a hard fought game,” according to coach, Patrick Costello, “we scored a field goal, but it was called back.” You can catch their next home game and shout for the Warriors on Sunday, June 15th at 2pm. Atlantic

A new Galway Documentary in the pipeline Over €16,000 has been raised through the fundit website for Atlantic – a Galway based documentary exploring the management of oil and gas assets in Ireland. Atlantic follows in the footsteps of the award winning documentary, The Pipe, with director Richie O’Donnell at the helm. Atlantic follows the fortunes of three fishing communities united and divided by the Atlantic ocean, as they struggle

20

to maintain their way of life despite mounting challenges within their own industry and environment, and an increase of oil exploration activities in their fishing grounds. Since September last year, the project has grown, with on location shooting in Ireland, Newfoundland and Norway. They hope to raise €25,000 by June 4th and you can help by logging on to http://fundit.ie/ project/atlantic in GALWAY

The Fishery Tower Museum

T

he long awaited Fishery Tower is due to open to the public shortly as a museum and exhibition space, following extensive renovations organised by the Galway Civic Trust. The tower is the only building of its kind in Ireland and is also known as the Fishery Watchtower and the Tower Station. Built in 1852/53 by the Ashworth family, the Galway landmark had

fallen into disrepair and was under threat of demolition. The Civic Trust recognised its architectural heritage, and was determined that it would be restored. They sponsored FÁS workers for the restoration, by agreement of the Western Fisheries Board, and guided by a conservation architect. The Fishery Tower Museum is now a major feature on the Galway tourist map, and its charm and strategic importance will contribute so much to the architectural and cultural landscape of the city.

Hats are one of my favourite fashion trends. They are a versatile fashion accessory, which can be worked into almost any look. Of course milliners have the ground covered when it comes to weddings, races and occasion fashion, but here at the CRAIC, we don’t see anything stopping you from wearing hats for a more everyday look. Hats are a must-have for SS14 and, although we most likely won’t be wearing them to shield our eyes from the sun’s rays here in Galway, there is no harm in wearing your hat solely in the name of fashion.

A personal favourite of mine, the fedora hat gives a bit of edge to your outfit. The pointed front draws attention towards the eyes and gives a mysterious allure to your look. Accessorise your fedora by adding a bow to it or opt for alternative colours for your hat.

Bowler Hats No longer reserved for comedic actors or Charlie Chaplin impersonators the bowler has made it’s way onto the High Street and into the fashion wardrobes of women all over the world. A quirky yet classic way to add some instant coolness to your look.

24

Floppy Sun Hats The trademarks of the floppy sun hat include a wide brim, straw hat and ribbon detail. If you have been keeping your floppy sunhat for the beach you might be waiting another while in Galway as it seems summer has already been and gone! Do not fear as the sun-hat is another fantastic way to make a fashion statement this summer. Wear it with jeans and a jumper for a casual day shopping or with a maxi-dress and some retro statement jewellery for a barbecue night.

Baseball Caps No, you won’t be mistaken for a ‘gangsta’. Baseball hats are cool! I like to wear them with a simple daytime outfit to add some urban street-style to my look. They can also look girly too depending on how you style the rest of your outfit. A cute floral necklace, a pop of colour on the lips and you are good to go. We’d love to see how you are styling hats around Galway, tweet us @ CRAICinGalway or use #CRAICstyle to get our attention!

As the political landscape changed across the city and county during election 2014, a few of our local councillors breathed a sigh of relief as they crossed the finish line and retained their seats for another term. It was an anxious time for many of our representatives, as they waited to hear whether they would be perched on high for another shoulder raising celebration, or ousted into the political doldrums,

never to be heard from again. Votes were counted, slowly, as eliminations brought each member just one step closer to the call of ‘elected’. Pictured above are the smiley faces of returning City Councillors Ollie Crowe, Peter Keane, Donal Lyons, Níall McNelis, and Michael Crowe, and we will be seeing a lot more of them over the coming years.

The Big Push On June 22nd, staff from C2 security will push one of their vans 26 miles along the streets of Galway in aid of two great charities - ACT for Meningitis and Jigsaw. They will start at the Hole in the Wall, then move to Claregalway, Oranmore, Salthill and finish up at the Stock Exchange Bar in the city. “We have a lot of Galway businesses on board with sponsorship, as both charities

do fantastic work,”says Carl Donlon from C2. “We do a charity push every year and we expect about 100 people will be involved along the way. We are really looking forward to it, but it will be tough to be fair, especially if it’s a warm day. Usually around 13 miles I start thinking that my calves will falloffmeanyday!”Todate, theyhaveraised €35,000 through the event and are hoping for a good number this year also. CRAICING GAEILGE!!! Is sinne na Seaimpíní By Dara KELLY

An bhfuil duine éigin i do shaol a bhfuil seaimpín uathu? Cén duine a d’fhéadfá cabhrú leo agus iad ar thóir na haclaíochta? Pé rud atá uathu - meáchan a chailleadh, a bheith aclaí don chéad uair riamh, éirí as toitíní, bia níos sláintiúla a ithe nó traenáil le haghaidh ócáid spóirt - féadfaidh tú cuidiú leo. Tabhair moladh dóibh, téigh ag traenáil leo, tabhair aire do na gasúir go bhféadfaidh siad dul ag traenáil, seol grianghraf spreagúil chucu nó inis dóibh go bhfeiceann tú an difríocht iontu. Duine a chumhachtú is ea duine a spreagadh. Ar an drochuair, tá

níos mó is níos mó dúlagar agus féinmharú ann na laethanta seo, mar sin bímis ag cabhrú lena chéile imeacht ón dorchadas agus gluaiseacht i dtreo na sástachta.

ARÍS! Affirmative Rituals, Irresistible Success

Translation

We are the Champions Is there someone in your life who needs a champion? Who can you help on their fitness journey? Look around you and see if you can champion somebody’s cause. Whether they are trying to lose weight, get fit for the first time ever, give up smoking, follow a healthy diet or train for an event, you can help. Give a word of support,

offer to train with them, babysit while they train, send them an inspiring photo or just tell them you can see the change in them... encouragement is empowerment. Depression and suicide are sadly becoming more common, so let’s help each other break out of feeling stuck and move towards fulfilment.
