A

s the Rose of Tralee festival approaches on August 15th, we had to find out how Galway Rose, Nicola Corcoran, is feeling in the run up to the big event. Nicola, who we met in Craic 25, is the first Galway Rose in 10 years to make it to the final and is one of the bookies favourites to walk away with the title. “I am so excited about the upcoming Rose tour which starts in Dublin this Sunday and even more excited about the Rose of Tralee International Festival which begins on the following Friday,” said Nicola. The Ballyloughane native is a craicing rose and we have no doubt she will do everyone proud. She has been finding some time for rest and relaxation after a busy week at the Galway Races.

4

“We had a wonderful race week and everyone has been so supportive. I feel blessed.” said Nicola. “Since I had such a busy race week I decided to get some quiet time before the tour. I spent three days in Lough Derg in Co. Donegal and I feel amazing after it. It was my third time doing the pilgrimage.” The Rose of Tralee International Festival will be on RTE on the 18th and 19th of August. “I am so excited to represent my county on an international stage and I hope that I make everyone proud,” she concludes. The bookmakers have placed Nicola as one of the favourites to walk away from Tralee with the crown from an early stage and we are optimistic that the Galway Rose could win the title for the first time since 1998! Best of Luck Nicola. in GALWAY

Speculation Mounts for Celebrity Wedding in the West

W

ell you h e a r d it here first (and across the internet, social media, etc) but back in February we speculated that Friends and Cougar Town star, Courteney Cox will marry her Snow Patrol fiancé, Johnny McDaid at Ashford Castle in Cong on the Galway/Mayo border. And it is looking ever more likely that the luxurious romantic stone fortress will be the venue where the stars say ‘I Do’. It is understood they will marry there at the end of the year followed by a star studded

reception in Malibu. Overlooking Lough Corrib, the castle has 83 bedrooms with six suites and was bought by the Red Carnation group last year for a reported €20 million. The historic five star hotel was made internationally famous as scenes from The Quiet Man film were shot there. First built in 1220, it became home to the Guinness family in 1852. Guests included King George V and Oscar Wilde. Since it became a hotel in 1939, many other stars and dignitaries have stayed there including John Lennon, President Ronald Reagan, Princess Grace and Brad Pitt.

Straight talking from the trailor trash mouth of Southern Belle, Candy, and the more refined Cara from Connemara. By Cara LYONS

www.lovefromcara.com

Dear Candy:

This may surprise you but….I…am Batman! The real one, and I have been having some trouble lately. I just don’t feel enthusiastic about catching the bad guys anymore. I mean I’d rather stay in and get a nice movie, have some chocolate, some ice cream, watch Bridget Jones diary, do my nails, you know usual man stuff - but there is so much pressure on me to be fighting crime. Those guys I used to fight aren’t really that bad after all. The Joker, he’s a laugh he tells a “why did the chicken cross the road joke” like no one I’ve ever met before and the Riddler comes over sometimes for pizza night and he really says things that make you think. Two-face only did all those bad things because he was insecure about the way

Candy: Oh My Gawd!!! It’s Batman! I just freakin love you! I have all your movies and even underwear with the little bat symbol on them. You can’t quit. If you do I’ll kick your butt. Oh we should totally team up. I’d be much better than Robin. I’d look much better in those outfits too. Wait, you better not be some

he looks. Not to mention how sweaty I get in my Batman suit, can you imagine wearing that mask on a hot night? Alfred, my butler, has to drain my suit into a tank before I can take it off or I’ll mess up the carpeting. Crime fighting was good in the old days when I could take on 10 guys with an old ‘Pow!’ a ‘Bam!’ or a ‘Sock!’ But now I have to work out all the time and I never get to go out and meet girls! I just think I need a day off. By the way Candy I’m a massive fan of yours. Will you send me your autograph? Lots of hugs and kisses from Batman.

creepy guy making up stories sayin’ you’re Batman when you’re not. You better send me some proof like some pictures and your bat utility belt. I totally want a ride in your batmobile, we should go drive by my cousin’s and make her super jealous.

Cara: Em…. I just… don’t know where to start. How on earth could you be Batman? Candy! Calm yourself! We don’t know anything for sure yet. I believe you may be under the illusion you’re Batman, a fictional character and I think you need to seek help. Tell your doctor who you

think you are and see what he says you should do. However…. If by some billion to one chance there is a Batman - and you are him - you rock!!!

A

s the 40th anniversary of President Nixon’s resignation over the Watergate scandal approaches this August, local Galway Bay FM sports commentator and actor, Ollie Turner, is directing a play inspired by the historic turn of events. The dramatic Frost/Nixon, by Peter Morgan, will be staged at the Town Hall Theatre on August 27th, 28th and 29th at 8pm. It details the downfall of the American President at the hands of interviewer, David Frost, as he finally admitted in a televised interview that he had wronged the American people.

Gary is from Missouri but lives in Ballyvaughan. He even looks like Nixon and I couldn’t imagine doing the play without an American actor. Everything has just fallen into place,” he says. There are technical challenges to the stage production, as the story revolves around a live television broadcast. Writer Peter Morgan stayed true to the original transcripts from 1977, and the gripping tension will be recreated at the Town Hall Theatre with special effects by technical director, Liam Feeney.

It is the first time the play will be shown in the west and it also coincides with the first anniversary of Sir Frost’s death in 2013 at the age of 74. In this production, he will be played by Ronan Lardner, and for director Ollie Turner, timing is everything.

“We wanted to recreate the tension between these two gladiators,” explains Ollie. “While Nixon wanted to evade a public hearing into Watergate, Frost became an unlikely white knight thanks to the power of television. It was a momentous time in history and we have the right cast to do justice to the true story here in Galway.”

“I read the play years ago and was really interested in it,” he says, “but I couldn’t find a Nixon! If I hadn’t come across American actor, Gary Hetzler, at a play earlier this year, I would still be looking.

It is the first outing for the Cairde Mol theatre group, named as a tribute after the late Micheal Ó Loideain. “He was a huge influence on my life,” explains Ollie. “I am delighted that it’s happening!”

ell I did it. I have recovered from my severe case of Ladiesdayitis (where the stress of outfit picking, fake tan disasters and throwback 1980s hair, render one unable to go to Ballybrit) thanks to a ticket to the fabulous Killanin Stand on the busiest day at the Galway racecourse. With a seat in the hurdle suite, we had a bird’s eye view of the galloping horses as they sped past the post. There were a few familiar faces in the crowd, including the gorgeous Dáithí Ó Sé who was relaxing in the run up the Rose of Tralee and beauty guru, Triona MacCarthy, of the Sunday Indo. Everyone was dolled up to the nines as we dined on a multitude of courses. Like Kate herself, I wore a dress previously seen at the Craic in Galway 1st birthday party from Fusion Fashion in Moycullen, teamed with a hat from Debenhams purchased many moons ago, and a bag from Monsoon I had in the closet. Unlike Kate, I was out with the glue gun sticking bits back together on my headpiece the night before and added a few royal blue feathers to the mix to tie the outfit together. I didn’t do too bad this year I thought. I stayed away from the gaggle of Ladies Day hopefuls until the winner was announced and was

highly impressed with the judge’s choice. There was an air of excitement outside the Anthony Ryans’ tent as the three finalists were brought to the style maddened crowd. As secondary school teacher, Helen Murphy from Douglas, Co.Cork, took her place on the podium, she was overcome with emotion at having scooped the top prize. Compere and judge Lisa Fitzpatrick had to give her a minute to compose herself through the cheers of delight. Dressed in a mint green midi skirt with a ‘50s flair and white top from Coast, she teamed it with an Aisling Maher multi coloured pearl necklace and a white disc hat embellished with broaches from Dunnes Stores. A vintage Walborg clutch and Nine West shoes completed the look. Through the mumblings of approval, I could only feel what many of us do,“I could have done that!” It wasn’t too far out of reach to the average person, simple and yet beautifully put together. I am still unsure if the top was a bit‘see through’but you have to have a bit of a rant as another gorgeous gal gets the crown. This year the judges were drawn to the pastel side of the colour palate and my purple ensemble didn’t hit the mark. Still, I enjoyed wearing it. I was my own best dressed lady. Til next year.

S

ome came for the horses, some came for the betting, some came for the CRAIC however without a doubt all eyes were on the ladies last week as Galway was once again transformed into a fashion capital for the Summer Racing Festival. Your CRAIC team were out in force in Ballybrit checking out the style daily. Fashionistas had spent months planning their outfits covering the finest details from headwear to handbags and everything in between. Traditionally ladies only had an opportunity to dress up on “Ladies Day” however this is no longer the case. Fashion and style are so vibrant in the West that this was the focus from Day 1 of the 2014 festival. The week kicked off with a competition to find “The Most Appropriately dressed” lady. This prize went to Galway lady Noelle Fleming who wore a simple but elegant pink and white ensemble.

24

As the sun shined for the week we witnessed many SS14 trends such as pops of bright colours and floral prints. When it comes to racing fashion one can never go wrong with classy, monochrome looks incorporating black, white and red – the bold yet classic colours. It was exciting to also see some women stray outside the racing style boundaries and wear alternative looks such as jumpsuits or full-length dresses. On ladies day it was a case of ‘the bigger the hat the better’ as there was also a prize up for grabs for ‘Best-Hat’. Paula Clancy from Inverin took away this prize wearing a black statement hat by Edel Ramberg designs. There really is no greater feeling than wearing a headpiece and heels! I was lucky enough to be sponsored by Mark Garvie Millinery and showcased many of his amazing creations over the week which included floral detail, structured looks and feathered designs. in GALWAY

– banjo Heather Cole-Mullen –

Lora Mushtaha, a milliner from Galway sponsored my headpiece on day 2 of the festival which I also enjoyed styling. Of course let’s not forget the men. They also made a fashionable effort and scrubbed up well for the week that was in it. Another CRAICing week of style at the Galway Races!

T

he master of pop art, Andy Warhol, has been a major influence on the Craic creator, Darius Ivan. As we celebrate the late Warhol’s birthday on August 6th, we discover that both have strong connections to Slovakia. Darius was born and reared there, as were Warhol’s parents, Andrej and Júlia Varhola before they immigrated to the US.

“and they told me how he used to send presents back to them from America. He would send fashionable clothes and shoes, but they couldn’t wear them as they were so different and unusual compared to the uniform world of communist Slovakia! He was always a cultural icon to me and a major influence throughout my life.”

“I have met a few of Andy Warhol’s cousins,” says Darius
