Galway City and County launch Culture Night 2014 Matthew Berrill entertained with musical numbers to whet the appetite for Culture Night and were joined by the impromptu stylings of Little John Nee. Also in the audience were Deputies Noel Grealish and Micheal Kitt, Cllrs Padraig Conneely and Frank Kearney. The event was officially co-launched by City Mayor, Donal Lyons and County Cathaoirleach, Mary Hoade.

alway Culture Night and the hosting of Fleadh Cheoil na Gaillimhe 2015 in NUIG are “stepping stones along the way to the European City of Culture 2020”, according to Galway City Arts Officer, James Harrold. He was speaking at the launch of Galway Culture Night, taking place across the city and county this Friday, September 19th. The city will host up to 90 free events in 68 locations and the county will host 80 free events in 27 different locations.

James was joined by County Arts Officer, Marilyn Gaughan at the launch and the two were united in their passion for showcasing the best of what Galway has to offer. Together, they highlighted the good working relationship between the city and county. “If we can achieve this much in one night, imagine what we can achieve in a whole year!” exclaimed Marilyn to the gathered crowd at the Town Hall Theatre.

“It is a chance to celebrate culture, creativity and the arts,” said Cllr Hoade, “and there are a record number of events taking place in the county. It is a great opportunity to showcase the wonderful cultural venues that we can be proud of in County Galway, venues that are so central to the hub of every community activity, and we hope people come along to experience something special on Friday, September 19th,” she said.

Speaking to the Craic in Galway, Cllr Hoade admitted that the sheer size of the county makes her new role as Cathaoirleach challenging yet enjoyable. She is proud of the number of volunteers she has met over the last few months and describes them as the “unsung heroes” of the community.

City Mayor, Donal Lyons, praised those involved in the organisation of Culture Night and said there will be “great stuff happening in the cultural and creative city of Galway”, with a “wonderful night of free events providing a great opportunity to see the many talented artists here, with great music, exhibitions and readings” that make up Galway Culture Night.

Cosgrave for Connemara

F

ormer Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave is set to make a rare pubic appearance as Connemara welcomes home Boston Mayor, Marty Walsh on Tuesday, September 23rd. It is 84 years since Mr. Cosgrave went to school in Carna, on the site of the new Emigrants and Diaspora Centre, where MayorWalsh will lay the foundation stone at a special event from 2pm.

Mr. Cosgrave retired as a Dail Deputy for Dun Laoghaire in 1981, serving as Taoiseach from 197377 and as leader of Fine Gael from 1965. He is now 94 years old and his connections to Carna stretch back to a time when he lived there in order to learn Irish in the old national school. Marty Walsh’s late father John, was a native of Callowfeenish near Carna village and for him, the visit is a return to his ancestral homeland.

The Emigrants and Diaspora centre will be built at the site of the old parish hall in Carna village, as a place to link the diaspora at home and abroad, and provide a living picture of the history of a rural, Irish speaking west of Ireland community. It will have an information library; emigrants remembrance garden; a café overlooking the Atlantic; events hall; fitness room and visitor information.

Meanwhile, a special meeting of Galway County Council is just one of the events taking place this month to honour the return of Mayor Marty. “It is great to have him back in Galway,” said County Cathaoirleach Mary Hoade “and we want to honour him with a special meeting of Galway County Council to officially recognise his achievements.”

New Spanish Vice Consulate in Galway

A

uthor of the acclaimed ‘The Binman’s Guide to Selling’, businessman Oisin Browne has added a new string to his bow by officially becoming the Spanish Honorary Vice Consulate in Galway. Having been approved by the Spanish Embassy, Oisin has been serving in the role since March and received the official handover from former Vice Consulate, Ann Tobin, at a ceremony outside their premises at The Spanish Institute on Dominick Street on September 11th.

Ann met Oisin, “by fate” over six years ago and knew “within 5 minutes” that they “spoke the same language about Spain.”“I am very proud to hand over the title,” she said in an emotional speech, “Oisin will be a fabulous honorary vice consulate and I am only trotting behind him. We are very lucky to have him.”

Ann was forced to retire from the post due to ill health and also paid tribute to her husband, retired ENT surgeon Kieran Tobin, “who collected students at all hours of the night” if they needed her help and was “absolutely fabulous.”

There are almost 2,000 Spanish people in Galway and they will be able to call on Oisin if they need help with passports, registration, or any consular assistance

while in Ireland. He spoke about the cities strong links with Spain and, as a member of the Irish Spanish Enterprise Association, he hopes to strengthen the economic ties between the two countries. And he thanked Nancy, Ger and Dave Coen for the facilities on Dominick Street.

Speaking to the Craic in Galway, Oisin said he was “delighted” with the appointment and, on a personal note, was fortunate to be able to officially stamp his child’s passport. He joked that the best way to learn the language was to “marry a Spanish person!” as his wife is from Spain and described his predecessor Ann as “a great guide and support”. “While I don’t know what’s ahead,” he said, “my motto is to give and receive”.

Oisin sadly lost his mum in March, but his proud father Ray was at the gathering as Oisin received the title.

Mayor Donal Lyons described Oisin as “no stranger to hard work” while Cathaorleach Mary Hoade said he was “focused and up for a good challenge”.

As a former student of The Bish, Principal Ciaran Doyle paid tribute to Oisin describing him as “an exceptional young man.” “We are delighted and proud that he is a past pupil of the Bish,” he told the Craic in Galway.

Making a Splash in Salthill!

L

eisureland is on track to fully reopen in the first week of December this year, according to Galway Mayor, Donal Lyons. The Salthill facility was destroyed by sea water flooding last January and, while the hall and outdoor amusement park have since re-opened, the popular pool and gym has remained closed to the public.

“Real progress is being made and we are on target for the first week in December,” Cllr Lyons told the Craic in Galway. He is also Chairperson of the Leisureland committee and gave us an insight into the renovations taking place.

“The whole inside was destroyed and everything had to be gutted,” he

explained. “The pool has been retiled and the gym will be refurbished. From what was a disaster, Leisureland will look great and be a fantastic facility,” he said. The committee will meet again on September 25th where a “definitive date” will be determined.

The first three months “have flown” by for the newly appointed City Mayor, who took over the chain of office from Cllr Padraig Conneely. He has travelled to L’Orient and Milwaukee in his official capacity and his aim is to put Galway on the map by putting in “a good bid” for the European Capital of Culture 2020.

“There are a lot of meetings taking place,” he said, “and we are delighted to partner with NUIG for the bid process.

I’m just going to jump right in here and say it. I think I am, or I was, the Mona Lisa in another life. I look just like her and I love taking selfies and - let’s face it - she must have too, if she sat there for weeks while Leo painted her picture.

I think back then, when I was her, I must have known that selfies would be a big deal someday, because I’m cool like that. If I look close enough, I’d almost swear I have the exact same kind of hoody she is wearing too at home.

Da Vinci is like, totally my favourite artist, and that can’t be coincidence. I’ve also been having dreams, but I think they’re more like visions.

In one, I know why she was smiling like that

- or why I smiled like that! I had trapped wind that day when old Leo was painting and well, it would have been really impolite back then to let one rip. So I let it slip out slowly, unnoticed, and got away with it. I had a small, subtle smile on my face while he painted. Anyway, I want to tell everyone I’m the Mona Lisa, but I don’t think anyone will believe me. Please help.

A Nightingale Winning!

The film A Nightingale Falling, starring Galway’s Tara Breathnach in one of the leading roles has scooped the Best Independent Feature award at the Underground Film Festival in Dublin, hot on the heels of winning the Best Feature Film at the Sky Road Film Festival in Clifden. Set in Ireland during the War of Independence, Tara plays May Collingwood, one of two sisters who take in an injured Black and Tan soldier in a tense and dramatic

tale of love and loss, set amidst the backdrop of war-torn Ireland. The tensions at home mirror the strife nationwide in a film based on a book by PJ Curtis. Director of the Blue Teapot Theatre Company, Petal Pilley has won the Tile Style Artists Bursary of €10,000 to develop her work as a director and artist.

Nominated by the Blue Teapot team, she was announced as the winner at a special ceremony at the National Concert Hall attended by President Michael D Higgins.

The bursary is designed to develop an artist’s creative practice and help take an idea to realisation, and Petal certainly deserves the recognition. She has been instrumental in the success of The Blue Teapot Theatre Company, working with people with intellectual disabilities.

alway city is always an interesting place for video game fans, as there is always a constant barrage of gaming events happening in bars and cafés stretching all the way from the city centre to Salthill and back again. Being a fairly large town with a population of diverse characters, the gaming scene has always tried to accommodate everyone, making sure that it has a little something for anyone who wants to join in by generating a fun and friendly atmosphere.

One of the most popular styles of gaming in Galway seems to be the Fighting Game genre. Games series’ like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Tekken see two players taking control of cartoonish characters and going head to head in a frantic, over the top martial arts battle in front of a brightly coloured backdrop.

This can often get incredibly exciting, and even bring the

audience to a complete stand still, gasping in awe as both players play as hard as they can to hang on to their last inch of life within the game just a moment longer than their opponent can.

Although this might sound a bit cold or brutal, nothing could be further than the truth. After each match, players smile, shake hands and have a good time laughing and debating the fight that they had just competed in while watching the next pair of gamers battle it out on the screen.

Gaming in Galway isn’t just about playing video games. It’s about meeting people, making friends, and spending time together. It’s always fun to see new people arriving at these events, just as it is to see regulars improving at their games in an attempt to overcome their rivals. Newcomers can sometimes feel a little intimidated by the gaming scene’s veterans, but the old guard are always willing to help out and teach anyone who’s interested the tricks of the trade.

Here in the city, there are regular events run on Monday nights in Padraig’s Place down by the harbour by Galway Gamer Tribes.

And I run Pints Agus Pokémon as a sidebar at their event too, where people get together to battle/trade in the Pokémon games on 3DS. It’s a lot of fun and very friendly. There are monthly Street Fighter tournaments called Invasion in The Cottage Bar in Salthill, which

draw a big crowd from all over the country.

Galway’s video game scene is all about having a good time.

Whether it’s the competitive side of things, or simply a few casual games, it’s always an enjoyable experience.

Many people travel from all over Ireland to attend these events, and they’re going from strength to strength due to their fun environments filled with friendly and welcoming gamers.

A Coole Autograph Tree!

enowned actress, Marie Mullen, will give the opening address at the 20th Lady Gregory Autumn gathering, taking place at Coole Park from Friday, September 26th to Sunday, September 28th. The event will be formally opened by Lady Gregory’s great grand niece, Margaret Farrell.

Translator of Irish legends and folklore, writer of comedies and fantasies, cofounder of the Abbey Theatre, and lifelong patron of William Butler Yeats, Lady Gregory was active in many artistic areas. Although her stunning home at Coole Park, near Gort, is no longer standing, several other buildings remain and the area has been developed as a nature reserve and boasts a welldesigned interpretative centre.

Recognising the remarkable influence of Lady Augusta Gregory on the development of Irish theatre and literature, this 20th gathering highlights her unique influence on Irish arts and culture, and will also feature the myths, legends and folklore of the trees in Coole, including the famous autograph tree.

Located in the historic walled garden, the autograph tree is a place where worldrenowned authors such as Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, Sean O’Casey, John Millington Synge and George Moore, carved their initials, marking Coole Park as the centre of the Irish literary revival in the

20th century.

Highlights of the gathering include lectures, discussions, readings, social events, a guided walk through Coole Park woods and a special visit to the Flaggy Shore and Mount Vernon in the Burren, with readings of Heaney and Yeats.

Dead Horse Jive’s Craic Crusade

here’s something of a punk rock revival taking place in Galway of late and local five piece, Dead Horse Jive are at the forefront. The number of emerging bands around town that place having fun as highly as the music itself has been growing recently. This is not a new idea to Dead Horse Jive, who have been entertaining crowds with their self branded Dirty Rotten Rock n Roll since their formation in 2009.

Fortunately the are not going unnoticed. Not only are the band due to be featured in Hot Press next month, Surfing Hundekuchen powerhouse of German punk rock have announced that Dead Horse Jive will support them for the Galway ledgof their upcoming‘Why Not?’tour.

What exactly is so interesting about Dead Horse Jive? There’s a few things.

Their energy - Whether you’re listening on headphones or seeing them live there’s something about DHJ that makes you want to jump around the place. Their upbeat melodies and their alcohol doused lyrical themes make one feel slightly invincible.

They look like their having fun. They sound like their having fun. That helps YOU have fun.

Their music - The combination of primal punk vocals mixed with rock and roll riffs makes for a very attractive sound. Although according to their Facebook page they were disqualified from a band competition for distasteful lyrics, their musical abilities shine through on songs such as I won’t lose you again and Full MetalTin Whistle proving they are talented fun loving musicians rather than drunks with instruments.

Their sense of style - Cheeky and Chic. Dead Horse Jive won’t just make you feel good, they’ll look good doing it. All their outfits are designed by none other than Brett Michaels of 80’s hair metal band Poison. DHJ are a vivacious band with a bright future in front of them. Here is a band that are smart enough to know sometimes people just want to let loose and be entertained. Definitely check them out on sound cloud or even better, see them live. They play the Cellar on the 19th of September with Slick as Thieves and are playing with Surfing Hundekuchen in Sally Long’s on the 24th. in GALWAY

It’s one of my favourite bars in Galway and on the night of Thursday, September 11th, it became home to one of my favourite musical traditions.

Male a cappella group, the Galway Baytones, hosted top Norwegian group Halvdan Svartes Guttekor, (which everyone had difficulty to pronounce), in a free concert at O’Connors in Salthill in aid of Pieta House.

They were also joined by the professional A Cappella Nights group as they united in music from around the world.

Halvdan Svartes Guttekor treated us to songs from their homeland, but the

most rousing applause came when the bounced into the likes of The Irish Rover and Molly Malone. It was wonderful to see an international choir embracing the anthems of the Irish, joined by top

quality local male voice choirs. It was a great evening’s entertainment for a good cause.

A Little Festival The Little Cinema is having its first ever Short Film Festival on September 26th - 28th in the Nuns IslandTheatre.

Friday night will have comedy sketches, Saturday afternoon will be a Junior Little Cinema and Saturday night will have a mystery bus tour
