Who will be Galway’s next Young Entrepreneur?

J

CI (Junior Chamber International), Galway are on the hunt for the 16th Young entrepreneur winner. Applications are now being accepted for this award; the longest running awards of its type in Galway. They seek to recognise and reward the achievement of the county’s best entrepreneurs aged 18-40. “The competition highlights the accomplishments of entrepreneurs and rewards entrepreneurial endeavour in Galway, and thus acts as a means of encouraging and developing indigenous, sustainable employment, which is vital to the region”. Garry Lohan, JCI Galway President 2014 tells us. The 1st award was won by wellknown Galway businessman Gene Browne (The City Bin Co.) in 1999, and other past winners include Liam Dilleen (EZ Living), Kevin Nugent (Mr.

Waffle), Nicky Deasy (Foundation Nepal) and last years winner Patrick McDermott from Stocktaking.ie. Ronan Walsh, Finalist 2013 & JCI VP 2014 explains how the awards impacted on his business, “The awards give an incredible boost to a business, I was lucky enough to have been selected as a finalist in 2013. Entrepreneurship can be lonely at times and the JCI awards give recognition for your achievements and a fantastic media profile in the local press”. JCI (Junior Chamber International) Galway are currently finalising the prize fund and it’s shaping up to be a substantial fund in excess of €50,000. Applications for this year’s awards are now open, with businesses encouraged to complete the application process which can be downloaded from jcigalway.org or by sending an email to gye@jcigalway. org . Let’s see what CRAICing young entrepreneurs we have in Galway!

Straight talking from the trailor trash mouth of Southern Belle, Candy, and the more refined Cara from Connemara. By Cara LYONS

www.lovefromcara.com

Dear Candy:

I had an injury from playing rugby and my doctor recommended I go to a masseuse. I have never had a massage before so I didn’t really know what to expect. I think everything was normal at the start, she told me to get undressed and hop up on the massage couch and my head was resting in the support so I couldn’t see her but here’s the really crazy part, I think she licks my back when she massages me, I can hear her licking the oil off her fingers too like she just had some Kentucky fried chicken and this one time I felt her sprinkling salt on me and I went to lift up but she put her hand on my head and told me to relax this is all part of the massage. I told the lads and they said maybe it’s not what I think and maybe it’s

Candy: This massage lady is clearly tryin’ to make herself a man burger! This is clearly some sorta demon who has taken over a human body and is pretending to be a masseuse so she can get new victims. You have to stop her for the good of Ireland!

some strange foreign massage but I think she’s planning on eating me! I think my masseuse is a cannibal. I keep going back because I’m so unsure and my doctor said she’s brilliant but it gets weirder every time. I swear I can smell brown sauce sometimes or ketchup. I think she rubs me with rosemary and garlic like I’m a freaking leg of lamb! One time I got home and took off my shirt and my girlfriend found some grated cheese stuck to my back. I’m afraid to go back but I’m also getting such mixed opinions I don’t know what to think. Please help. Get a conker – which must be blessed by a priest who was 70 last February. Then you need to ask the priest to tie her shoe laces together and finally you need to cover her in cow milk and aromatherapy oils then she should be fine.

Cara: This is clearly not normal behaviour for a masseuse and you need to report her. She clearly needs help. It is not right for a masseuse to cover you in seasonings and lick you. You could be putting yourself in danger.

You need to let the authorities know what she is doing as soon as possible and do not go back to this women!

CRAICing Time to Talk!!! By Rebecca CASSERLY

- Music for Console Young Galway singer/songwriter Maria O’Dowd is launching her debut CD ‘Time to Talk’ on 8th October in An Púcán, Galway at 9pm. All proceeds from the CD will benefit Console to raise awareness for the national suicide prevention and bereavement charity. “I have lost friends to suicide so I want to get the message out there that hope and help is always available at Console,” said Maria, “The organisation has always been close to my heart because of the fantastic work it does supporting people in crisis and working with families and children who have been bereaved by suicide”. Inspired by American bluegrass and country music Maria’s CD contains two songs called ‘Memories’ and ‘Friends’ which are both inspired by true-life experiences. She wrote Memories after her grandfather passed away and explains that it is a song about the heart felt agony of losing somebody close. “The song Friends is about a young friend of mine who was bullied and who turned to me for help,” said Maria. Writing two contrasting pieces of work led Maria to believe that these two emotions are simply two sides

of the one coin and that it is always important to make time to talk. This led Maria to name the CD ‘Time to Talk’. Playing piano and guitar Maria is accompanied on ‘Time 2 Talk’ by local musicians Chris Kelly and Ray Diamond who play slide and electric guitars. Musicians Mairin Fahy, Chris Kelly, Ray Diamond and special guest Marc Roberts will be appearing with Maria at Wednesday night’s launch, which is being sponsored by An Púcán.

A

utumn is always an interesting time of the year. It represents change in so many ways. From the leaves changing colours to people’s lives changing direction. For some it’s returning to school or college after a long, hot summer. For others it’s more about preparing for Hallowe’en and the year’s following holidays. There is always a change in atmosphere throughout the streets of Galway City during these months. One thing that most people agree on though, is that autumn is Fifa season! The Fifa football series of video games are a household name at this stage. It seems that everybody and their mother plays them. Players pick from a wide selection of real life soccer teams, from huge nations to smaller clubs, and take to the pitch in a variety of famous international stadiums to try and live the dream by beating their rival before a roaring crowd of fans. Each year a new edition of the game is released with updated controls systems and a new player roster featuring the contemporary real life sports stars.

there’s always a huge buzz surrounding the release of the games. This year was no different. Lines of people queued up outside the local games shops on Headford Road to grab their copies of Fifa 15 during its midnight release. People chatted about how they were looking forward to playing as Spain, Spurs, Chelsea, and a whole host of other classic teams. Most people also claimed they’d be buying the game on PlayStation systems. Local gaming group, Galway Gaming Tournaments, are also involved in the Fifa action, hosting regular tournaments on Sunday evenings at The Skeff bar in Eyre Square. These events see huge crowds in attendance as men and women from all over the city battle it out to be crowned Galway’s Fifa Champion. There are prizes to be won, fun to be had, and an absolutely electric atmosphere to be enjoyed during the games. The fun is heightened further by many of the matches being played on a huge projector screen so that the entire audience can enjoy it and cheer their friends on. Autumn is Fifa season alright, and so far this year is kicking off with a blast!

Galway City is no stranger to Fifa, as

T

he CRAIC in Galway talk with Doug Leddin who is currently in training for a half-marathon in Las Vegas, US. Doug, who spends his time between Galway and Dublin, tells us about his personal reasons for taking up running and how this has helped him cope with inflammatory bowel disease. How did you first recognise you were suffering from this disease? June 14 2012 is a date I will probably never forget. It was the day I was rushed to hospital, I remember waking up, my stomach was bloated, the pain even worse than before, like a hand moving in and around my stomach, clenching at organs and slowly releasing. My doctor sent me to a specialist who performed colonoscopies, scans and blood tests within a matter of hours and unfortunately I was diagnosed with Crohns disease. Where did you look to for support?

For IBD sufferers your stomach rules your life. How your day is going to go, how a holiday will be, what your dinner will consist of and how much energy you will have. It’s a constant pain that you have to try keep at bay every day. It’s a condition that rules my day-to-day life and how I face it will decide whose life I’m going to live, my stomachs or mine, I chose mine. What changes did you make in order to cope with chrons? In August 2013, after living with IBD for a good year, I decided I needed to feel better and I took up the gym and running. Tell us about your athletic journey. In the past year I have received great support from Active Fitness at the Connacht Hotel in Galway and the Gym Rathgar in Dublin, with helping me complete two half-marathons and the Dublin City Marathon.Fitness helps me keep my weight down that pile on from steroid dosages and it has left me in a much better place. What’s your next challenge? I am running a half marathon in Las Vegas on behalf of the ISCC, this takes place in November and for those who would like to support you can visit the donation page on www.idonate.ie/lasvegas

Initially this was a disease I wasn’t aware

Guinness Amplify Surprise Gig

T

here was great CRAIC around Galway last week with the arrival of Guinness Amplify to Connacht. Countless free gigs kept us entertained for the week culminating in the announcement last Saturday morning, 27th September, as to who would be playing at the much anticipated ‘Surprise Gig’. The details and location of this surprise concert had been kept top secret until the morning of

the event when it was revealed that Dublin band Kodaline would play in An Púcán with support from London Grammar and Dan Croll. With a very limited number of free tickets available on a firstcome basis fans queued from early in the day to try and gain entry. When the doors opened 200 lucky fans were admitted for an intimate gig experience in Galway’s newly re-opened pubbing venue - An Púcán. A CRAICing night was had by all with thanks to Guinness Amplify and An Púcán.

Following Her Dreams…

O

lina Stepankova remembers the day she came to Ireland - a sunny day on September 21st 2007 and she has never left. Galway and its’ people have changed her way of life. She has always worked with fashion, in modelling, marketing and production – and yet it was the loss of her job some years ago that was the change she needed to start following her dreams.

With a little encouragement from her mum, she got a business plan together and started ‘Olina Bridal’ two years ago. She now runs her small bridal salon in Galway. The focus is not solely on bridal couture but also on accessories for that special occasion during the year. Her collections have been inspired by Irish lace and Irish legends. She loves Irish crochet lace and handmade Irish Carrickmacross lace. Olina is a big fan of vintage and rustic weddings which are now so popular in Ireland. She is constantly searching for new materials and techniques and tells me that she has yet to get the chance to create

something with Irish linen! According to Olina, “inspiration is everywhere...my customers, music, art, travelling, tradition”. These experiences can be seen in the unique designs that she produces including beading, jewellery and headpieces. She sources her materials in Ireland, the Czech Republic and Austria, supporting and working with local artists and small family businesses as much as possible. She is looking forward to unveiling her new photo shoot soon named ‘Winter Princess’and also has a collection called ‘Every Day Glamour’ to make sure her customers can return to her if they wish to get something for another occasion. “I have the bride in my mind,” she explains. “Her personality, her style, her dream wedding.”Wedding veils are her most popular products. She says that simple classic veils with an element of sparkle are the most requested pieces. Olina says “If there is any bride who likes different and original pieces, please contact me. I’d love to create something unique for you”.

Aries (March 21st – April 19th) The Ram Aries was the Greek god of war and jeepers, it shows in this sign sometimes! These adventurous risk takers are impatient, bold and passionate. They love competitive sports but probably only if they win. Taurus (April 20th – May 20th) The Bull Much like the animal, Taureans are fierce stubborn and can get fierce irritated in a disagreement, not wanting to give ground. But they have a great stamina and strength of will for tasks. They love the finer things in life but this includes appreciating beauty and being incredibly generous to those around them. While they love receiving gifts, they also love giving them. Gemini (May 21st – June 20th) The Twins They’re all split personalities!! Ara I’m only messin’ with ya.. those geminis have a wit as quick as a hare and a mind to match it. They are

26

The crab likes to have a comfortable shell when he/she can make a home. Friends and family are top priority for the crab. The crab can get a bit crabby if they don’t feel secure and comfortable. They are not shy on hiding their feelings either! Leo (July 23rd – August 22nd) The Lion The Lion loves the limelight....and jeepers is he/she good at it! Lion loves to use a bit of the auld drama/ melodrama to get what they want. They can be fierce judgemental. But at the same time, well able to be a loving, generous and confident friend. Good person to have in charge of an event or a situation. They know what they’re doing, those Leos!! Virgo (August 23rd – September 22nd) The Virgin A perfectionist in some ways. More Psychic POPPY Horoscopes Libra (September 23rd October 22nd) The Balance

Libra is more of a thinker than a doer and spends a lot of time looking for balance in their life. Justice and equality for all. In fairness to them, very good social skills and they appreciate beauty and music around them just like those Taureans...They usually only do the “Justice” shout when they get fierce worked up about something. More often, they leave it to an argument in their own head... Scorpio (October 23rd – November 22nd) The Scorpion The Scorpio loves a big and bold lifestyle and likes to be seen living this of course! They analyse everything before making a decision. As you can imagine, fierce good craic on a night out...(not!). Only messin... they’re passionate of course and make great entrepreneurs. Good people to invest your money in if they have a business. Sagittarius (November 22nd – December 21st) The Archer/ Centaur Inspired by the half man, half horse, sure is it any wonder this lot have an auld soft spot for the animals?? They love studying and learning as they’re a fierce good intellect on them. You wouldn’t want to be smothering them at home or in general as they like to roam about the place looking for the craic but will always come back to you at some point. They’ve a high energy (there’s other words for that of course but the less said

the better maybe..). Capricorn (December 22nd – January 19th) The Goat This is another fellow who needs a happy home to be complete. He couldn’t be going with the flow or at a whim at all. That’d be fierce stressful. He’s the man with the plan. He has to have a plan! He’s good at organising stuff and makes a good friend when he eventually decides to open his mouth (not much of a talker you see). Aquarius February Bearer

(January 20th – 18th) The Water

The hippie of the bunch (but sometimes Pisces helps him out with this). He likes tree hugging and the like. Sure you know the type...He’s very sociable and intelligent and well liked. He’d be happy to spend his time looking at art, listening to music and saving the dolphins. Pisces (February 19th – March 21st) The Fish The old soul of the bunch. Sensitive and dreamy, they would rather dance through a field of clover with a fairy than deal with anything as dreary as real life. This can obviously cause problems when they realise that real life is where they live. They can be quite selfless and like to work behind the scenes rather than in the limelight. They can come across as fierce innocent altogether sometimes and a bit emotional.
