High Five - 10years of the Galway Jazz Fest Galway was swingin’ and groovin’ to the best of local and international jazz as The Galway Jazz Festival took centre stage from Wednesday, October 8th - 12th. The festival aims to promote jazz as an art form in the west and encourage youth audiences to get involved. This year was dedicated to jazz guitar and a special tribute to Louis Stewart was one of the highlights of the five night fest. Frank
Vignola, who has played with Ringo Starr and Madonna, lit up Nun’s Island Theatre with his touring companion Vinny Raniolo while audiences were enraptured by the 16-year-old guitar prodigy Andreas Varady at the Hotel Meyrick. Other participants included Pierre Durand and Guido Zorn, Naomi Berrill, the Frank Kilkelly and Rick Harris trios and Ensemble Ériú.
Baking Up A Storm Thousands of baking enthusiasts descended on Leisureland over the weekend of October 4th and 5th for Bake Fest Galway in aid of ACT for Meningitis. With celebrity chefs and live bake offs, all money raised at the baking and cake decorating show went directly to the charity. Craicing congrats all.

“Like everything, the end is just the start”. These words echoed across the Town Hall Theatre after we witnessed the spectacular docu-film Unbreakable, The Mark Pollock Story. Still in its infancy, its 10th screening held in Galway, the audience reaction to the tale has been rapturous across the country. A standing ovation from the packed auditorium ensued as director Ross Whitaker, Mark Pollock and fiancée Simone George took to the stage for a Q and A. They were overwhelmed by the response and we were, quite simply, overwhelmed. Inspirational is a word that is bandied about far too often and yet without it, I am rendered speechless. How do you capture a man whose determination to overcome blindness at the age of 22 led him to becoming an elite endurance athlete, racing across deserts and mountains, and the first blind person to reach the South Pole among his many adventures. Mark Pollock refuses to be defined by his disability and yet, in a cruel
twist of fate, becomes paralysed in a freak fall three weeks before his wedding day. The film opens as Mark twirls his fiancée Simone gracefully across the dance floor. Their happiness is complete. A collection of old home video reels and photos give us an insight into a happy childhood, before his vision was permanently impaired, and he was forced to rediscover his identity beyond blindness. As we meet him, he has overcome this physical hurdle to compete at the highest sporting level and to win the heart of the beautiful Simone. Director Ross Whitaker met Mark in University and knew him “when he could see”. “Little did I know he would encounter two huge life changing events,” he said, “it wasn’t fair and filming at that time was the furthest thing from my mind”. It was their friendship which allowed fiancée Simone, (who studied law here when NUIG was UCG), to relax >>>>

It is in defeat that he re-emerges at the cutting edge of paralysis research as the door on the endurance race world closes firmly behind him. He uses his business skills to bring together the three key players in robotics, electronics and pharmacology in the US and becomes the first in the world to undergo a new experimental trial. “It felt like moving from a mini to a Ferrari and back to a mini again,” he explained, as he endeavours to bring the technology “out of the labs and into use”. “This is my new sport,”

I can’t stop collecting things! I keep bringing old, broken furniture, toys and objects home with me and keeping them in my house. I feel sorry for them. I feel like they are alive. My friends keep trying to explain this can’t actually be possible, but I feel like they have a soul. I talk to them every day. I think I sense something others don’t. I feel like I need to save every old table with a wobbly leg and every old sofa with a hole in it. I just can’t stop! I think that if I don’t do it I will be punished in some way. I wouldn’t save a broken dish though or something that has been burnt because I feel like those things have died.It’s hard to explain
but I only take the things I still know are alive. It’s getting worse I have started keeping ever yoghurt pot I clean out and I never write on paper because I think I’m hurting it. I cry every time I have to use the toilet and say mass over my innocent toilet paper that sacrificed it’s life for me. I think I have a special gift but people say I’m crazy. I’m running out of room in my house too. Please help I don’t know what to do.

- Satirical Songsmith Sean Gorman is something of an anomaly around town. Instead of the usual, heart on sleeve romantic schtick most singer songwriters indulge in, comedy is his weapon of choice. Walking the fine line between being offensive and entertaining with his risqué yet hilarious lyrics, Gorman is Galway’s answer to Tim Minchin. Like Minchin, Gorman’s lyrics draw not only on personal experience, but often have a political edge, dealing with a range of issues from the roles of church and state, feminism
and child abuse. With songs with titles such as ‘sex god’, ‘back to the kitchen’ and ‘Goths on the beach’ in his arsenal, Gorman is a breath of fresh air. Highly entertaining but not for the faint hearted, once you hear his songs, you’ll either want to punch him or show all your friends. tudents from NUIG are building Ireland’s most energy efficient car, the Geec! It will be efficient enough to drive from Galway to Dublin on less than €1 wor th of electricity. In May 2015, the team will compete with 200 other teams at Shell Eco-marathon Europe as the first team ever to represent Ireland in the event. The team consists of students across the Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic and Energy Systems Engineering disciplines with full backing from the University ’s College of
Engineering and Informatics. The team is currently testing and tuning the car and is seeking to build relationships with par tners and sponsors
who can help to develop this project for the 2015 Ecomarathon and beyond.

O
ne of the many things that Galway is known for is its fun, feel-good attitude. It’s said that Galway loves to party. That Galway parties harder than any other Irish city. That it will party for pretty much any occasion. Following the party that surrounded the 25th anniversary of Prince of Persia video games, I’m starting to think the myth might be true. The Factory, on Upper Abbeygate Street, housed a once-off spectacle to be remembered on Friday, Oct 8th. Hosted by 4theye and Gamepak Dublin, the event mixed music and gaming with harmonious results. In celebration of 25 years of Prince of Persia, the Factory was temporarily transformed into a Persian haven for gamers who have a love for the series. Footage from throughout the many games’ life span were projected onto the walls, and there were a few game stations for people to test their skills at the 1989 original. hard gameplay, and many players found themselves throwing in the towel and admitting defeat to the game’s difficulty. Music was provided by a host of wellknown Irish DJs who had incorporated sound effects from Prince of Persia into their sets, along with bites from other classic games like Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, and Castlevania. Ultimately producing a unique blend of game orientated Drum ‘n’ Bass and Dubstep tracks that had the crowd on their feet for the entire gig. The night was topped off with a blinding set from award winning scratch artist, Jimmy Penguin. A quarter of a century after their original release the Prince of Persia games are remembered fondly in Galway City, to a point where people are willing to dress up in ancient Persian attire and write music about the games. With many other classic gaming franchises turning 25 within the next few years, it would be great to see more creative events like this coming to town.

indrias De Staic, the multiaward winning performer, returns to Galway with his show ‘The Man for Moogaga’- where football, music and mayhem collide at this year’s Vodafone comedy festival. We catch up withhimforanindepthchat,freshfromhis BuladhBuskshowonBBC2. Where do you find your inspiration? Mostly I’m inspired by people, like the characters, the footballers, the heavydrinkers, the crazy guys, the barmen, the farmers, the guys selling turnips outside the pubs on a Sunday. And all the people I meet when I’m out on tour. I’ve done shows inspired by my travels abroad, Irish people living in Australia, and also shows about giving up the booze - which comes from my own experience. I don’t intentionally observe people, but I do hear their stories, and that inspires me. Do you strive to be more original than your last show?
inside yourself - by getting it out - but in a creative way. You look like an athlete. There’s probably days when you have to go for a run. It’s like that. You think, ‘feck, I have to tell that story!’ These days, I feel I need to create material about mental illness - and other things that are going on in my life at the moment - but it’s hard. If you can do it in a fun and entertaining way that people enjoy, then that’s the success. How did you feel about the passing of Robin Willliams? I thought it was really sad, but I kind of understood it. You can have it all and still be unhappy. A lot of us comics are manic depressive. I remember being at a party years ago in Edinburgh. There were a load of comedians there and, instead of jokes going around, there were more cynical comments, with people taking the piss out of taking the piss. For example, we all say; “I used to be quite introverted as a child, but then I became quite outgoing when I started performing.”

‘It’s Superhero De Staic!’ Do you feel that you’re sharing too much? No, I wanted to share more, and I just sometimes judge the water on what I share and what I don’t. With all the creativity going on, do you find it hard to get it all down on paper? Yes, the new show is still quite improvised. I love that, it’s very live! Sometimes if I’m a bit hyper, I will get an idea, a song, story or character and record a voice memo into my phone. Then I will have an audio of what might work. This new show ‘the Man from Moogaga’ is an interesting mix of music, comedy, stories and theatre. I love to keep it all fresh and moving. Sometimes I am so restricted by TV work, I find
the freedom of the stage really liberating. There’s a wild energy to this kind of live comedy. Are you a stream of consciousness type of person? Sometimes when I’m telling a story, I can go off on a tangent. Its great craic and the audience will go with it. I play jazz as well, I love jazz, but I’m not that good at it. When you play jazz you’re just improvising totally. When was the last time you laughed out loud? Yesterday at the beach in Salthill. I see the funniest stuff on the Prom. et in Co Armagh in 1986, Defender of the Faith, the debut play by Love/Hate creator, Stuart Carolan is as raw and gritty as the TV series. With seamless acting, by Decadent Theatre the plot is entrancing and is everything you would ask from Carolan. The themes of family, deception, violence and political conflict are paramount as the play explores deceit and the wickedness of human nature. Black humour enlaces this script, as it centres around a family caught in the grip of the IRA, and under the watch of the British forces. The constant suspicion and paranoia throughout the play keeps the audience on its toes, as comedy soon gives way to crippling tension. A dilapidated farmstead sets the scene for our introduction to the head of the household and father of the family Joe (Peter Gowan); eldest

son Tommy (Michael Ford Fitzgerald) a somewhat simple minded predictable character, and younger brother Danny (David Martin) a hyper active dreamer who is the glue that binds the characters together. When an IRA mission is botched, JJ (Diarmuid De Faoite) is sent from Belfast to root out a possible ‘tout’ and brings the simmering tension to the boil. The cast along with Barney the philosophical farmhand all come under inspection. Individual vulnerabilities come to the fore in the relentless thriller. The acting was superb and Carolan captured the anxieties of the era thanks to his exceptional writing. As he relies a lot on bad language, Defender of the Faith might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but was well worth a trip to the Town Hall Theatre.

urder on the Menu, the popular murder mystery entertainment company started last year in Galway, is getting ready to launch their new private murder mystery games this month. The games are designed for groups of 10 or more where participants become the characters in the storyline. Guests can choose between having the event take place at their private residence or can opt for one of the exciting meal and cocktail packages. The man behind the venture is Canadian born, Bruce Henry who started Murder on the Menu in the summer of 2013. “Our first game Hen Parties & Heartbreak has done tremendously well this year and we gradually began introducing other themes and story lines.” The themes developed this year include, 1920’s Great Gatsby, Hollywood Red Carpet, Traditional Agatha Christie and
their newest arrival, a 1980’s Prom Party theme. In addition to providing the entertainment, Murder on the Menu is also happy to handle many of the preparations including organising the meal, booking the event room, sending out the character descriptions and handling the payments from the guests. “We offer a complete experience for our guests. It’s one of the reasons we’ve become so popular. We introduced a new invitation and payment system where guests can RSVP and pay for their portion of the party. This saves the organiser a lot of time and undue stress as there’s no chasing people for money.
