was told there would be cake! Suddenly I found myself in front of a piano at Lakeview School, auditioning for the Galway Musical Society. “But I don’t know any songs” I exclaimed, already resigned to my fate. “Ah sure you’ll sing something” encouraged the chorus master, Paddy Daly, as I gave in and launched into my version of ‘I’ll tell me ma’ complete with chicken arm dance moves. ‘Entertaining at least’ I consoled myself as I turned a brighter shade of red.

their production of Grease and I felt it would make a good article for the Craic in Galway magazine. I always wanted to be in a production, having been brought up on a diet of musicals and the annual drama festival in Athlone. I have photos of my late father dressed up in costume as he too, tread the boards as part of the chorus, a n d I was

By Avril HORAN It was all a bit of a misunderstanding. My good friends Chontelle Kenny invited me to a GMS introduction evening, involving aforementioned cake, and, I thought, perhaps a lecture and a slide show of sorts. Its 30 years since GMS first stepped out on stage with

curious to see what it was all about. I have been involved in lindy-hop, charleston and balboa dancing for the last ten years, and yet trying to merge singing and dancing at the same time is a whole new ball game!

There was plenty of cake alright, that part was true, but six months on, I am just days away from taking part in this year’s production of Anything Goes, at the Town Hall Theatre. As I write those words, I feel my heart starting to pound and my stomach churn. I am in some kind of shock. It’s as though I have been going through the motions, stepping it up week after week, without realising that I will be performing - in front of – people.

This Cole Porter comedy has it all, with tap dancing and songs such as ‘I Get A Kick Out of You’, ‘You’re The Top’ and of course ‘Anything Goes’. Then there is the set, lighting, orchestra, costumes, back stage and front of house crew to consider before we even step out on stage. Brid Gavin was involved in the very first production of Grease, 30 years

ago, and is back again for Anything Goes. At the press launch, she gave us an insight into what being involved can do as she thanked directors Brian and Sean Power for “giving us confidence in our 20’s” and “while some of us may have lost our confidence along the way, we are getting it back again”.

With my social life outside GMS firmly on hold until the end of March, and with lots of very understanding friends, I wonder why so many are drawn to take part, year in, year out. There is so much involved in a show, and that’s just the chorus members. The principals carry the weight of the dialogue and show stopping numbers. Anything Goes runs from March 24th-28th at the Town Hall Theatre at 8pm

ts Friday the 13th of March and The Darkness are playing at the mighty musical fortress of Monroes Live. The band explodes on stage to a packed house. It was soon clear that the Darkness were in fact a slick professional outfit and entertained their fans completely all through the show. I was enlightened by the Darkness as I thought they where a soft metal band, but their music was more reminiscent of the great indie rock band The Cult, which was a thumbs up from me.

sk anyone who has ever visited Galway what their favourite things about the city are, and most people will reply by telling you they love the atmosphere created by street performers. The music, dance, and life that fill the cobbled streets create a feeling that no other town in Ireland can replicate. So it seems more than fitting that there should be a live show to celebrate these great artists.

by Eoghan MURPHY Over the last number of weeks, The Blue Note has been host to a fantastic competition called Buskfactor, designed to showcase the talent of Galway City. Throughout its four heats, the show saw a huge variety of captivating acts taking to the stage and wow the crowds. These included dancers, comedians, improvisational theatrical performers, fire eaters and all manner of musicians; each with their own spellbinding personalities and attitudes that lit up the small, comfortable William Street pub. Acts were chosen to go through to the final by a combination of the audience’s votes

A fantastic band known as Nate Furey began the competition with a smooth, mellow vibe. They were followed by Fort Lorenzo Trio; a phenomenal blues band fronted by one of the most powerful singers in Galway. Former Rose of Tralee winner, Róisín Ryan Egenton, will transport us back to the 1930s as she plays the sultry character of Reno Sweeney in the upcoming GMS production of Anything Goes at the Town Hall Theatre from March 24th – 28th. The talented lass with the beautiful voice is a Galway girl at heart and has not let a serious back injury in 2011 stop her from entertaining the crowds.

By Avril HORAN Loves: My fiancé, friends and family, laughing, musical theatre, dogs, horses, pizza, sushi, music, playing the violin, reading, cooking (I’m a feeder!), Christmas, thunderstorms, hot baths and the electric blanket. Hates:

• 8:30pm: A fundraising progressive card game takes place every Monday at Ballyconneely Town Hall in aid of Ballyconneely Community Preschool.

Bad parking, fried liver, animal cruelty, people who judge others based purely on their job or education, flat-pack furniture put together incorrectly. Tell us about your character in the upcoming musical Anything Goes? Reno Sweeney is an evangelist nightclub singer living in1930s New York City. She’s sexy, charismatic, and confident. She has friends in high and low places, a devilishly fun sense of humour, and a big heart. Do you share any similar traits? Some - I love a good laugh and I have friends from all walks of life, but I’m probably a bit more shy and goofier than Reno. I really have to come out of myself to portray her razzmatazz!

Are you still recognised as a Rose of Tralee winner? Sometimes, yes! Some people have incredible photographic memories, despite me being 15 years older, carrying a few more pounds and sporting a different hair colour. Did it open many doors for you? Yes, but at the time I was too young and naive to notice doors opening. Sure, I could have been more shrewd and seized my opportunities for“big breaks”, but that wasn’t me - and moving to Ireland on my own was exciting and challenging enough! I just took the year at face value and enjoyed it. I represented the Festival and Ireland both here and abroad, I had the opportunity to impact positively on others, and I met really wonderful people all over the world who I continue to call friends. I’m very proud of my Rose of Tralee experience and the Rose‘family’. How did you end up in Galway? My aunt, uncle, and cousins live in Renmore and I’m close to them so Galway was my first port of call when I moved here. And my aunt has a craft shop “Án Pucán” out on the Aran Islands - I used to (and still) love going out there. I moved to Kilkenny in 2005 for work and, even though I enjoyed it, I always hankered to get back West, so I was delighted to move back to Galway in 2011. How do you balance your working life and the musical society schedules? It’s a juggle! My work in the HSE is wonderful but demanding, I might be on the road 7am-7pm then straight to rehearsals until late. I also teach violin and play gigs at the weekends. But while show season is hectic, I love rehearsing and I miss it when it is over. How many shows have you been in and when did you start?

I was in my first show when I was 7 years old, playing Marta in “The Sound of Music”. My big line was “I’m going to be seven on Tuesday and I’d like a pink parasol!” Since then I’ve been in about 20 shows, between school and adult productions. How do you keep fit? Walking my dog, horseriding, pilates, dancing… I used to run and completed the Dublin Marathon in 2010, but I broke my back in 2011 in a horseriding accident and can’t do high impact exercise as I used to. My knees are grateful. If you were stranded on a desert

island, what three items would you bring with you?: My fiancé Nicky, my dog Coco, and MacGyver. Favourite place to go out in Galway: Galway is full of quirky restaurants, coffee shops and pubs! Be it a cozy meal with my fiancé in Cava Bodega followed by a glass of wine in the Brasserie.... or meeting a gang in the Asian Tea House and then heading to the Dew Drop and The Stock Exchange... or getting a coffee and muffin in Renzo’s... I’m spoiled for choice!

Straight talking from the trailor trash mouth of Southern Belle, Candy, and the more refined Cara from Connemara. By Cara LYONS

Dear Candy:

This is St Patrick. It was my special day on the 17th and well, I like to check in on everyone every so often so I come back in disguise and I just have a few things to say. I spent so much feckin’ time chasing all the snakes out of Ireland with nothing but a stick and me ol’ dog Shep and what do you all feckin’ do? You start importing them years later back into the country. Not to make handbags, not to eat but to keep them as pets!

Candy: Hay St Patrick! Don’t worr y I know exactly what you mean! Sometimes I do stuff and people don’t appreciate me for it. Like this one time I borrowed Cara’s credit card and bought myself some new shoes and clothes and I got her a new handbag and did she say thank you? Hell no! and those snakes are nasty! They don’t got no legs! They just scoot around on their bellies lookin’ for trouble. They ain’t nothing but spring

PETS! Feckin’ pet snakes! Sure there’s no loyalty in a snake do you think if you let your snake out in the garden it would come back? Will it fetch your slippers or round up the feckin’ sheep? No chance of that boy’o! Your all gone mad! Then you go and get hammered to celebrate what I did and go home to your feckin’ snakes then. I won’t help you next time you can hire an exterminator.

www.lovefromcara.com loaded poison tubes! You can’t snuggle up with a snake! If you did it would be the last dam thing you ever snuggled. Those things are always shedding their skin it ’s like they don’t want to look like the snake they were yesterday cus’ they committed some sor ta crime or something. Looks like we will have to tip the scales in our favour. You just keep them away from me and that will be fangtastic!

Cara: Em…. this couldn’t possibly be St. Patrick….could it? I mean no! Come on don’t be ridiculous! I thought the snakes were supposed to be symbolism of something completely different

not actual snakes? This is just crazy! Why does every crazy person in the world contact us! And yes I don’t like the snake thing either.

hen you mention the word ‘gaming’ to anyone in this day and age, they automatically think of gripping control pads and engaging in some cyber, while their characters move around their TV screens. However, this isn’t the only type of gaming that people hold dear to their hearts. There is something older, something that doesn’t need electronic devices to tell its story and captivate its players. Something that’s stronger on the Galway gaming scene now than it’s ever been before. That something is table top gaming and it is celebrated through a huge event known as Itzacon. This aptly named convention By Spud MURPHY is organised by NUIG’s Fantasy and Science Fiction Society to accommodate the striving table top and card gaming scene throughout the city. There is so much going on at this convention that it will take the entire weekend to cover it, with events taking place from Friday March 20th through to Sunday 22nd. Classic competitive

card game Magic: The Gathering tournaments will be taking place on Saturday. For the more Anime orientated card fans, there’ll also be a chance to play Yu-Gi-Oh. Live action role playing games are also a huge part of the Itzacon experience, and the convention’s 11th annual event will be jam packed full of them. These games begin with players being appointed certain roles. From here, each player must act as their character in real life Cluedo-like scenarios. ‘LARPs’ are a massively popular style of gaming and are sure to draw a great crowd to NUIG this weekend. Of course for those who are more comfortable playing their games on HD TVs through their Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 consoles, there will also be a plenty to do and see. Ultra Street Fighter IV and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 are among the fighting game tournaments on the bill. There will also be turnbased action with a Pokémon: Omega Ruby and Apha Sapphire competition. Itzacon has a little something for everyone and looks set to stand strong as a staple of Galway gaming for another decade.

have grown up with the shenanigans on Summer Bay. I was convinced that life down under was full of beautiful people in swimming togs and incredibly short school uniforms, who spend their time dating and surfing in the year round sunshine. Career choices were simple; a teacher, doctor, lifeguard or waiter, as the drama centred around school, the hospital, the beach and the diner.

Times have changed. The hunky Braxton brothers are now at the centre of every storyline and I have accepted that Roo is just a different Roo. Marilyn is back, but without Lance. New characters have come and gone, with a higher turnover than ever before, as many use the soap as a springboard onto the Hollywood stage. And yet Alf is still Alf – managing to dodge a crisis himself while getting embroiled in everyone’s drama. And while the hunky Braxton boys have done the meet and greet rounds in nightclubs, it’s now Alf ’s turn. Ray Meagher is on a tour of Ireland and will appear in Galway at the Clayton hotel on Thursday, April 2nd at 6:30pm for a Q and A and photo opportunity.

hat is Community Skratch, you ask? It’s not nearly as odd as the title may suggest at first. In fact, when put into context it makes perfect sense. The Community Skratch Games is a long running festival, built to showcase Galway City’s endless love of music, especially that place it has in its heart for record scratching. It’s an annual celebration which draws a national and international crowd of electro, hip hop, rap and dance fans to experience an entire weekend of crazy turntable based live music.

By Eoghan MURPHY This year’s event, taking place on April 4th and 5th in Bierhaus on Henry Street, is set to be a head turner with a huge amount of acts on the jam packed bill including Jimmy Penguin, JusMe, DJ Chile, Kutclass, Lewis James and Same D4ence. One of the many highlights will be the now infamous “Open Freestyle Battle Royale” section of the weekend which will see veteran musicians pitted against new comers as they attempt to

This means that scratch artists can be as imaginative as they desire with their set, without having to worry about the record failing them. Since Community Skratch Music is a non-profit organisation which provides free gigs and CDs, this incredible invention is being funded by their Kickstarter which can be found through their

Muintir na Gaillimhe…

a bilingual chat with some of Galway’s interesting inhabitants An as Gaillimh tú? Cá bhfuil tú i do chónaí anois? Gaillimheach go smior mé. Tógadh sa Daingean mé agus táim ag cónaí anois in aice Loch an tSáile. Cén obair a dhéanann tú? Úinéir 37 West mé, m’áit bheag shona sa Chaisleán Nua ina gcreidimid gurb ionann folláin agus gnéasúil na laethanta seo! Tá gnó nua curtha ar bun agam le déanaí dar teideal Strive For It (http:// www.strivefor.it). Tá sé dírithe ar fhiontraithe ban i nGaillimh agus ar fud na hÉireann. An misean atá againn ná tacaíocht agus spreagadh a thabhairt do mhná i mbun gnó. Táim féin agus mo chomhpháirtí, Lisa Regan, ag iarraidh ceannairí ardtionchair a chruthú. Is mian linn an chumhacht a thabhairt do mhná caighdeán a saoil féin a ardú. Rath gan sásamh, sin teip i ndáiríre.

pearsanta agus cuid acu craiceáilte, mar an dúshlán Tough Mudder! Tá sprioc ollmhór díreach déanta agam – d’fhreastail mé ar sheimineár Tony Robbins i Nua Eabhrac.

Thosaigh mé ag déanamh gleacaíochta le déanaí, mar sin beidh mé ag seasamh ar mo lámha am éigin i mbliana! Táim ag iarraidh Strive For It a chur faoi bhráid gach bean a cheapaim a bhainfeadh leas as, sin an sprioc is mó atá romham. Ná habair tada, ach is mian liom an dara bialann a oscailt agus táim i mbun taighde air sin freisin. Céard a dhéanann tú don Chraic i nGaillimh? Go moch ar maidin a thosaíonn an chraic liomsa – i giom PDF i mBearna. Bím ag traenáil ansin 3-5 uair sa tseachtain leis an ngrúpa Rising Stars ag 7am! Bíonn craic iontach againn agus bím sásta tabhairt faoi dhúshlán ar bith ina dhiaidh.

Cé nó céard a spreag tú tabhairt faoin obair seo?

Cá bhfuil an chraic faoi cheilt i nGaillimh?

Fuair mé spreagadh ó bheith ag léamh faoi mhná cumhachtacha mar Sheryl Sandberg nó Arianna Huffington. Faighim spreagadh freisin ó na mná iontacha a chasann orm gach lá agus iad ag iarraidh an saol a chaitheamh ar an leibhéal is airde is féidir. Tá na tréithe céanna iontu go léir. Creidim go láidir go gcabhróidh líonra tacaíochta mar seo leo an chéad leibhéal eile a bhaint amach.

Tumadh isteach sa bhfarraige ó ché Bhearna ag 7am maidin shamhraidh.

I have recently joined gymnastics so I will be striving for some sort of handstand in the next year! I want to bring Strive For It to the attention of all the women I feel will benefit from it, so that’s my biggest goal for the next few months. I have a secret burning desire to opening a second restaurant too so I am also doing my research on this. What do you do for the Craic in Galway? My craic happens early in the morning in a gym in Barna called PDF! I go there 3/5 times a week to train with my group the Rising Stars at 7am! It is honestly the best fun, it sets me up for the day and all the challenges that lie ahead. What is Galway’s best kept secret? A dive off Barna pier at 7am on summer’s morning. TRANSLATION Are you originally from Galway? Where do you live now? I am a true Galway Girl, raised in Dangan and currently living in LA, otherwise known as Lough Atalia. What do you do workwise? I am the owner of 37 West, my little happy place in Newcastle where we believe that healthy is the new sexy! I have recently set up a new business aimed at female entrepreneurs in Galway and Ireland, called Strive For It (http://www.strivefor.it). Our mission is to support, motivate and encourage women in business. Myself and my partner Lisa Regan want to make some exceptional leaders of influence. We want to empower women to raise the standard of their lives. Success

without fulfilment is failure. Who or what inspired you in your chosen career? My inspiration for Strive For It came from reading about the lives of powerful women such as Sheryl Sandberg or Arianna Huffington. But really my inspiration comes from the super women I meet on a daily basis who are all striving to live the best lives possible. I can see a common thread in us all. I really believe that a support network like this will help bring them to the next level. What’s your goal in 2015? I have lots of goals! Some business led and some personal and others just pure daft like doing Tough Mudder! I have just completed a massive goal last week by going to New York to attend a Tony Robbins seminar.
