Rotary Dar Marathon 2017 Enabling quality healthcare for the disadvantaged at CCBRT By C. Barretto

The Rotary Dar Marathon record for 2017 for the men’s 42.2KM marathon winner was set by Tanzanian Said Makula, who had a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes and 11 seconds. Roisina Kiboino was the womens 42.2KM winner, with a time of 2 hours, 44 minutes and 44 seconds. The 21.1KM men’s winner was Tanzanian Ismail Juma with a time of 1 hour, 5 minutes and 55 seconds; and for the women Shelmith Muriuki with a time of 1 hour, 15 minutes and 31 seconds. 16 I Dar Life I November 2017

W

ith the moon, still high in the sky on the morning of Nyerere Day, October 14th, 2017, the Green at Oysterbay was buzzing with excitement as volunteers, service providers and Rotarians finished the last-minute details of the 2017 Rotary Dar Marathon. Dar es Salaam was about to experience its first full 42.2KM marathon with runners from all over the world joining the race.

From its humble beginning in 2009, as a charity walk with 700 participants, the Rotary Dar Marathon has now grown into one of the largest charitable events in the region. The marathon attracted over 12,000 participants including athletes from Malawi, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar.” The Rotary Dar Marathon 2017 edition was organized by the seven Rotary Clubs in Dar es Salaam in partnership with Bank M. The Rotary Dar Marathon 2017 is focused on raising funds towards building a clinic at the Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania (CCBRT). The funding is in support of CCBRT’s social enterprise project, which aims to expand revenues to be able to support subsidized care in the disability hospital. All funds collected by Rotary Dar Marathon activities will be used to complete construction of this clinic and also support the equipping and outfitting of the facility. This year’s Rotary Dar Marathon includes a 5KM and 9KM family fun walk, and a 21.1KM half marathon, and even more exciting was the first every 42.2 KM full marathon in DSM. With the growing number of cycling enthusiasts who participate in the event, there was a 42.2KM cycling race as well. The Rotary Dar Marathon patron, former President of Tanzania Hon. Ally H. Mwinyi, accompanied by the Minister for Information, Sports and Culture Dr. Harrison Mwakyembe flagged off 5KM and 9KM walk at 7:00am. Hon. Mwinyi subsequently marched the 5KM walk and was awarded the oldest walker to finish in good time. Both the full marathon and the November 2017 Dar Life I 17

half marathon saw an unprecedented turnout, with over 200 competing runners. Runners from Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda, the U.S, the Tanzanian Military, and the Police force ran alongside elite up-country runners and amateur runners who wanted to prove to themselves that they could do it.

The 9KM and 5KM walks were indeed a sight to behold as people from all walks of life, sizes and ages, geared their trainers and grabbed a water bottle to walk for a cause. The start line took 46 minutes to clear as Toure Drive was covered with a pulsing line of blue. Speaking after the event, the Marathon Committee Chair Ms. Catherinerose Barretto said “We feel this year’s marathon has been successful, not just with the addition of the 42.2KM route, but with over 12,000 people coming together to help CCBRT provide quality healthcare for the disadvantaged- making the Rotary Dar Marathon the largest human impact project in the country.” One could truly sense an amplified level of excitement and passion that was exhibited by all friends, families, schools, clubs, corporates, sponsors and volunteers. It is with great sadness that the Rotary Dar Marathon team offer our condolences to the family of Tanzanian marathon runner Ismail Juma Gallet who passed away in DSM in November. Ismail competed in several Rotary Dar Marathon events - he took 1st place in the 21.1KM race for 2017 Rotary Dar Marathon; and 2nd in the 21.1KM race in the 2015 Rotary Dar Marathon. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his success inspire young Tanzanian athletes to run faster and harder.

Speaking during the event, Hon. Mwinyi said that the efforts shown by the Rotary movement and its partners in serving the community deserve recognition. He said that the Marathon has contributed significantly to the welfare of our community and he feels honored to participate in the walk every year.”

The Rotary Dar Marathon introduced the cycling race last year with 200 participants. This year, with the 42.2KM race, 400 cyclists participated creating a competitive edge to the event. Mohamed Shamutty had the best time record of 1 hour, 3 minutes and 33 seconds in the men’s category; and Jamila Abdula with 1 hour, 21 minutes and 30 seconds in the women’s category.

NC: I am very close to my assistant and staff in general, I always look forward to support, to help and to learn. All my mentors and my bosses were always people who were accessible. I hate to be rude to staff because it doesn’t help them to grow in any way; in fact, I always encourage them to ask questions because you can’t give someone a task that they know nothing about. It’s all about empowering. They are a team, we are a team!

Hyatt is a global brand that is synonymous with quality. This hotel is very focused on food and beverages, it is a hotel where you can eat the best food prepared by the best chef form well selected products. We work around the clock to give authentic experience to the guests, something you cannot get anywhere else. It is five star service.” DL: You have had a lot of opportunities in other counties as in this position, what made you come to Tanzania? NC: This is not the first time in Tanzania because I was in Zanzibar before where I was with Melia Hotel for two years then I moved to Doha. I was with Hyatt for 10 years before in Spain, when the idea of rejoining Hyatt, especially in Dar es Salaam was floated to me it was very appealing. I am so happy to be here because we have lots of projects in Tanzania and across East Africa.

DL: What do you currently like about Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam, the Kilimanjaro restaurants that you are managing and How can you contribute to make the restaurants a more successful?

NC: I have had lots of experience in working in countries such as GCC, Spain, Japan, China, Jordan, England, Norway, Zanzibar and Doha. I have my background in the French and Mediterranean cuisine but I know almost all the cuisines in the world. After being in this field for so long when I walk in the kitchen I feel and know if what they are doing is right or not. When I get a meal I know whether it was prepared with passion. My objective is to make sure that clients are satisfied and get value for money. Use the local products, treat it carefully and serve it well.

DL: Walk me through the process of designing a new menu.

NC: First of all it is the product, it has to be the best that is available with the knowledge how to combine one product with the other to make something unique. It depends on the type of restaurant, we have to stick to the identity of the place when creating recipes but at the end of the day we use local products to achieve our objective for example here we have the best red sniper in the world. Our menu is full of variety.

There are a lot of things to do here. I come with the desire to introduce new concept, restaurants, Bar, Disco, night life- unique cuisine combine by local product, unique sound with the best artist, in F&B is all about experiences, all count, the color, the sound, the light, the food, the beverage, the presentation, the music, the look and feel. I want to bring to Tanzania the perfection in the whole culinary, night life or bar experience. To start with, I decided to collaborate with all of Tanzania’s best celebrities to be part of our culinary and beverage journey to show them and ask for them support to diffuse in all their huge contact. I want also to focus on healthy food and teach my guest and collaborator how to eat healthy. We are introducing new juices such as beetroot and apple in all my menus as we are trying as much as possible to avoid panfry and fatty foods. It is important to teach the young generation how to eat healthy foods. I also want to help people, support, regularly going out of the hotel to bring food to the orphanage, or helping some family. Last weekend I went to be with nuns to just spend time and talk to them. It was emotional. DL: What’s your approach to prepare a special menu that could impress the Tanzania Community?

NC: We focus on the tradition of the Tanzanian people; for example I know that chicken, fish, rice and Ugali are some of the main dishes in Tanzania. What I have come to learn is that some of the French dishes are just the same as what is available in Tanzania such as the meat stew and the fish soup.

DL: As F&B Director of Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam- the Kilimanjaro, how important is customer service to you?

NC: Customer service is a must, it is our daily focus. We measure our guest satisfaction, when guests leave here they receive a questionnaire asking them how their stay was. I meet my guests it is part of the hospitality industry and I love to hear their feedback because if they complain most of the time they are solved. I usually

also mix with the guests during breakfast and ask them about their experience. To survive in hotel business, like I said before, you must have passion.

DL: How do you train your team?

NC: It is important and I always love to share what I have. I show them all the time, it makes me happy to see employees take initiatives and sometime they even do it better than what I expect.

“Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam has four restaurants and one discotheque, The Palm Brasserie which is the main restaurant, The Oriental restaurant which specializes in Asian cuisines with a Thai chef, Flame Tree Lounge, Level 8 which focuses on night life and then Rouge the disco.” DL: Describe the menu you designed that you’re the proudest of.

NC: That was in Jordan in 1999 during King Hussein’s funeral and I had to prepare a meal for the French president Jacques Chirac. We had to come up with something for him and his entourage and I must say it was

fantastic to see him come down to meet me after the meal.

DL: What has been the pressure here so far?

NC: There is a lot of pressure but with time you learn how to cope. This was one of my major weak points when I was young, there is no room for mistakes. In the top restaurants like where I started you either learn or you go. The guests who come here spend a lot of money therefore we have to give them the top.

DL: Recall a time a customer was dissatisfied from your service. How did you handle their complaints?

NC: It happens sometimes, we have to act promptly, the last one was actually a French guest who had never been to this part of the world, he was not happy with service to slow. Talking to him, we are now best friends.

“There are plenty of exciting options at our different restaurants such as healthy juices at Flame Tree, Brasserie French concept which is new in Dar, Sunday Brunch which is the best in Dar, Level 8 where you get a taste of cocktail and night life, Dj’s sun set vibes on Thursday and Friday. Besides, this hotel offers you the best venue for events in the city.” F&B Nicolas Meal Recommendation at Hyatt Residency, Kilimanjaro Salad – Nicoise Soup – Bouillabaisse – Fish Soup Main Course – Lasagna [made by my Mom]. Dar es Salaam Centre for Architectural Heritage Walking Tours Promote and preserve the historic fabric of Dar es Salaam By Dr Nina Wahlberg

Looking for a new way of connecting with your city? Either as a new-comer or long-time Dar resident? DARCH walking tours could be the answer. The Dar es Salaam Centre for Architectural Heritage (DARCH) is a non-profit organisation set up to promote and preserve the historic fabric of Dar es Salaam. The focus is on preservation through innovative uses of existing buildings and an emphasis on communities, in opposition to rapid and thoughtless demolition of all things old in favour of ‘Dubai style’ high-rises. “DARCH aims to raise awareness of the value of the historic buildings of Dar. One of the ways they do this is by organising walking tours, to bring to life some of the most interesting buildings and neighbourhoods of Dar es Salaam and share their fascinating stories.” A group of friends and I decided to take them up on this offer to learn more about the city we live in and set out one Saturday morning. Our walking tour was expertly led by two knowledgeable and personable guides; Gwamaka, a historian, and Dorothea, a graduate architect. We started in the Old Boma, the oldest surviving building in Dar. It has been painstakingly renovated by DARCH and Dar es Salaam City Council who own it, and the beautiful spaces host a 60 I Dar Life I November 2017

The theme of the walk was ‘Old vs. New’ and took us on an intriguing trip through the changing faces of the city. From the Old Boma we walked northeast along Sokoine Drive, taking in the Gothic spire of St Joseph’s Cathedral, the solid block of Atiman House (also known as the White Fathers’ House and probably the city’s second oldest surviving building), and the striking shapes of Tropical Modernism. The tour highlighted prefabricated buildings shipped from Germany by the German Administration of Tanganyika (now housing different Government agencies). We passed the Court of Appeal and learned about its unsavoury history, first as a German and then a British-only club. The newly independent Government of Tanzania opposed what this building stood for and it was scheduled for demolition. However, it

was saved by a public petition and given new life as a hospitality school and then as the Court of Appeal. The outcry which preserved this building is an interesting historic mirror of the community activism DARCH is aiming to foster today. “Our attention was drawn to the way historic inequality and deliberate policies of segregation by the German and British authorities have left their mark on Dar’s urban spaces. But we also learnt of the valuable contributions made to the fabric of the city by all the different communities, ethnicities and religions that have called it home. The passion and expertise of our guides helped to put it all into perspective.” Although many buildings are undoubtedly in dire need of tender loving care, the tour showed what a captivating city Dar es Salaam is, if you just slow down and look around. The Permanent Exhibition is open Monday to Friday and by appointment for weekend tours. To arrange a walking tour call: 0767 318 108 or visit the DARCH Facebook page @DARCHTZ. Permanent Exhibition covering the development of the city, including the Zanzibari, German and British periods through to independence and beyond. The exhibition is included in the walking tour and its fascinating photographs tell the story of Dar’s development from small fishing village to the bustling metropolis of today, over the course of 150 or so years.

Positive Thinking In The Workplace Three Simple Steps “Positive thinking in the workplace is extremely important for career builder newbies to turn in work that goes beyond expectations. Positive thinking is a mental attitude that expects good and constructive results. It does not deny the existence of negative results or things beyond one’s control, but concentrates on solutions rather than problems.”

W

hen our thinking is positive, our attitude is positive and we transfer a feeling of success to our colleagues. In other words – we transfer energy and enthusiasm to those around us. People feel good towards us and are more willing to help us. Positive thinkers know that when things go bad or unexpected result occurs, it is only momentary. That positive result is achievable. If you are new to applying positive thinking, here are three simple steps I suggest: Practicing Positive Thinking In The Workplace #1 You cannot pay lip service to positive thinking. You need to practice and make positive thinking your prevailing attitude towards life. This will transfer

towards positive thinking in the workplace. So, how do you make it a prevailing attitude? Entertain positive thoughts. It takes as much effort to think about the negative as it is for the positive. Concentrate on the positive and expect a positive result. Associate with colleagues with a positive attitude. Read inspiring quotes. These are simple ways to create a habit of positive thinking in the workplace. Practicing Positive Thinking In The Workplace #2 Positive thinking in the workplace is solutions thinking. When a project goes bad and not in the desired direction, a positive thinking person concentrates on solutions instead of the problem. Ever noticed some colleagues have a natural tendency to point fingers when things do not go right? They tend to whine and complain instead of starting to work on a solution immediately? Positive thinkers

live up to the challenge of the problem and commit themselves to seeking a solution to the problem. They do not dwell on unproductive activities. Practicing Positive Thinking In The Workplace #3 As a career builder newbie, you will probably get new assignments that you may not be familiar with. How many times have you thought – “Oh no, I am never ever able to do this”? When that happens, you end up wasting precious time. Positive thinking in the work place involves thinking in these words – “I can”, ”I will”, "I am able”, "I am ready". It also involves taking the initiative to seek answers and solutions. And to be proactive in learning about the information needed to complete the assignment at hand. A positive thinker in the workplace concentrates on the assignment and is not distracted by negative thoughts.

Is Lack of Consistency Killing Your Sales?
Don’t Underestimate the Power of Repetition in Marketing By Victoria Munro

“Lack of repetition could be sabotaging sales and costing you a fortune. Your message needs to be seen and heard over and over again. It is generally accepted that it takes six to eight “touches” to get your name, service, brand or product to the point of achieving top-of-mind awareness with your prospects and customers.”

W

hatever forms of marketing you use, once or twice won’t be effective. Consistency is key, so if you’re just going to try it once or twice, save your money!

Keep in Touch with Clients and Prospects Regularly: Direct mailings to current clients and prospects should be delivered on a consistent basis, at least six times a year. These could include: newsletters or ezines, postcards, letters, invitations, announcements, coupons, etc. Taking time to clip and send useful articles and information when you’re not asking for a sale can build a bond of trust. Build relationships by setting up a system to call clients and prospects on a regular basis. Make Marketing a Habit: Commit to doing at least two to three marketing activities every day. This may seem challenging initially, but after a few weeks it will have become an easy and profitable habit. Communicate with the Media: Send press releases regularly detailing a newsworthy event, recent achievement or the latest developments in your business. Ideally, send these once a month to editors of industry publications and local newspapers.

Consistently Track Activities, Costs and Results: Measure your success! Design a system to effectively track the results of each marketing activity. Without this in place, you’ll never know if you’ve won or lost, which methods were great investments and which you should abandon. Some strategies, like an ad campaign, can yield immediate results; on the other hand, PR takes longer to build and track. Repetition and consistency in marketing builds strong awareness and credibility. As you consider your marketing plan for the coming year, consider ways to build both repetition and consistency into the plan, and make next year a record year! 66 I Dar Life I November 2017

Project a Consistent Image: What message do you want to communicate? If you want to be known for top-notch quality, then everything must reflect the highest quality: printed materials, electronic communication, phone conversations, etc. If you claim to be an exceptionally innovative designer, then everything you produce must communicate unusual creativity. If you want your company to be known as the friendly dry cleaners, then your store must be welcoming, and everyone who has contact with the public must be friendly.

The collection blossoms in a colorful, ideal for summer seasons for both men and women. As stated by American President John F. only promote his brand but also enhanced and earned recognition to Tanzania’s textile and fashion industry through his fashion creativity to industry elites and style influencers around the world. Hassanali has showcased in 29 cities in 20 counties globally; a major feat unparalleled in the fashion industry in Tanzania. Mustafa Hassanali is truly a fashionista personified!

By A Novel Idea

Origin - by Dan Brown Robert Langdon, Harvard professor of symbology and religious iconology, arrives at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to attend the unveiling of a discovery that “will change the face of science forever”. The evening’s host is his friend and former student, Edmond Kirsch, a fortyyear-old tech magnate whose dazzling inventions and audacious predictions have made him a controversial figure around the world. This evening is to be no exception: he claims he will reveal an astonishing scientific breakthrough to challenge the fundamentals of human existence. But Langdon and several hundred other guests are left reeling when the meticulously orchestrated evening is blown apart before Kirsch’s precious discovery can be revealed. With his life under threat, Langdon is forced into a desperate bid to escape, along with the museum’s director, Ambra Vidal. Together they flee to Barcelona on a perilous quest to locate a cryptic password that will unlock Kirsch’s secret. In order to evade a tormented enemy who is one step ahead of them at every turn, Langdon and Vidal must navigate labyrinthine passageways of hidden history and ancient religion. On a trail marked only by enigmatic symbols and elusive modern art, Langdon and Vidal uncover the clues that will bring them face-to-face with a world-shaking truth that has remained buried – until now.

Guy Martin: Worms to Catch - by Guy Martin Breaking records on the world’s biggest Wall of Death, cycling 2,745 miles across the length of the United States (while sleeping rough), attempting to be the fastest person ever on two wheels and travelling to Latvia to investigate his family’s roots, it’s been a busy year for Guy Martin. There’s been some thrilling racing too, including wild Harley choppers on dirt and turbo-charged transit vans through the Nevada desert. And don’t forget there’s the day job to get back to in North Lincolnshire – the truck yard and the butty van. Guy has done more in one year than most people do in a lifetime, and with his gift for story-telling, he takes you with him to the outer limits of human endurance, and on a dizzying adrenalin high, all in a day’s work.

The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye: Continuing Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Series - by David Lagercrantz The fifth in the Millennium series that began with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - the global publishing phenomenon. Lisbeth Salander is an unstoppable force: Sentenced to two months in Flodberga women’s prison for saving a young boy’s life by any means necessary, Salander refuses to say anything in her own defence. She has more important things on her mind. Mikael Blomkvist makes the long trip to visit every week - and receives a lead to follow for his pains. For him, it looks to be an important expose for Millennium. For her, it could unlock the facts of her childhood. Even from a corrupt prison system run largely by the inmates, Salander will stand up for what she believes in, whatever the cost. And she will seek the truth that is somehow connected with her childhood memory, of a woman with a blazing birthmark on her neck - that looked as if it had been burned by a dragon’s fire . The tension, power and unstoppable force of The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye are inspired by Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy, as Salander and Blomkvist continue the fight for justice that has thrilled millions of readers across the world.

I

f you would like to get a taste for what Zanzibar was like 30 years ago, then a visit to Butiama Beach lodge is a must. This is a place where time seems to have stood still - where you can stroll for miles along deserted sandy beaches with not another resort or beach boy or tourist in sight, with only the haunting cries of African Fish Eagles and a multitude of scuttling crabs for company – and if you’re lucky you may just spot some of the whale sharks for which Mafia has become increasingly famous, cruising like friendly submarines just off the beach. Butiama Beach was opened in June 2010. It is situated on the west coast of Mafia Island, just next to the main town of Kilindoni and outside of the

Marine Park boundaries. From Mafia airstrip, it takes around 10 minutes by car. Butiama Beach is a family business and aim for a casual and relaxed atmosphere which caters for couples, friends or families. With only 13 bungalows and a maximum occupancy of 32 people, it is the perfect beachfront retreat to relax and unwind. Butiama Beach is in a fantastic location for those interested in taking boating trips out to see (or even swim with) the gigantic Whale Sharks which inhabit certain areas of the Mafia Island coast during December and March each year and feed on the plankton which exists there.

Accommodation Options at Butiama Beach With 13 comfortable bungalows, all facing the sandy white beach and the glistening Indian Ocean, choose from double, twin or roomy family bungalows. Relax in a hammock on your spacious verandah as the evening breeze caresses you and the sun gently sets. Each one of bungalows is beautifully furnished with our unique furniture – hand crafted from the sun and sea-kissed hardwoods of retired sailing dhows, and decorated with kikois – charming, colourful hand woven cotton sarongs. All rooms are ensuite with hot water, mosquito nets, electric fans and safety deposit boxes. Our guest soap is hand-made in Mafia using only locally

All products are handmade in Tanzania, using local recycled material and supporting some of the NGO projects in the country. The shop is located at Reception. • Spa - Located on the beach you will find a traditional “banda” or locally made hut, where you can relax and enjoy a massage. • Wi-Fi - Although most of our guests come to “get away from it all”, we do appreciate that some like to keep in touch with home! There is complimentary Wi-Fi available around the Reception area. Swim with whale sharks, snorkel on coral reefs, picnic on pristine sand banks, or simply relax on the stunning white powder beach in front of Butiama – this gorgeous little beach lodge on unspoiled Mafia Island has jumped straight into our shortlist of favorites! It’s all the brainchild of the very hands-on owner/managers of Butiama Beach, a lovely Italian lady Maura and her Mafia Islandborn and bred husband Moez, who have used their years of experience running other lodges to good effect in the creation of Butiama. Maura and Moez are also some of the finest hosts and succeed in creating a wonderfully warm, relaxed and friendly atmosphere which cannot fail to put guests at their ease from the moment they arrive. The beauty of Butiama is that if you don’t feel like being active and going out on all sorts of excursions, then just chilling at the lodge itself is just as relaxing.

“During your stay in this exquisite part of the world you must experience sailing in a tradition dhow boat, or snorkeling and diving at some of the liveliest reefs in the world, looking out for turtles, swimming with whale sharks (November to February) and the huge variety of oceanic fish. Exploring on land you will see amazing native trees, animals and birdlife and can visit the local villages to get a real experience of island life. Sailing to the nearby islands and sandbanks you can explore the ruins of the ancient city of Kua on Juani Island, discover the history of Kisimani, or visit Chole Island where you will find the rare Comores fruit bat. Whatever you want to do Butiama can accommodate, with a wide variety of activities and a friendly attitude that says nothing is too much trouble.” Maura and Moez have now put in a lovely swimming pool and there’s also a massage hut overlooking the beach. We found the hammock on our spacious veranda had an almost magnetic attraction; otherwise take your book down to one of the loungers on the beach or relax over a game of bao in Chiringuito, Butiama’s charming beach bar, where you can enjoy an ice-cold Kili or cocktail whilst marveling that places like this still exist in the madness of today’s world (and also reflecting on how lucky you are to have discovered Butiama). Whatever you want to do, Butiama can accommodate, with a wide variety of activities and a friendly attitude that says nothing is too much trouble. Treasury of history and culture Mafia has been a port for dhows of the monsoon trade winds from Arabia to Sofala for 2000 years, yet the island is little changed from ancient times and retains a traditional culture and friendly people with a population of 35,000 who depend on fishing and agriculture. African, Arab, Asian and European cultures have all influenced the character, religion and economic trades of the Archipelago and these historic ties are still evident among the people. The Kua Ruins, on Juani Island across Chole Bay from Kinasi, is an archeological site from the 12th Century, established by settlers from Kilwa. There are also ruins of early settlement on Chole Island, which was the “capital” of Mafia until the early Twentieth Century. Beach and Bay Mafia Island is located in the magnificent southern circuit of Tanzania and Zanzibar and is part of a fascinating array of parks, reserves and Indian Ocean islands. The coral reefs, bays, sand bars, lagoons and beaches of the Mafia Archipelago are now part of the Mafia Island Marine Park, Tanzania’s first marine national park. Only a thousand visitors a year come here so it remains very much a traditional Swahili Coast destination and really can lay claim to the title of “unspoilt”. Mafia is the destination for those who truly wish to “get away from it all”. Even after two decades of a love affair with Mafia, we are still discovering new beaches, previously unrecorded birds, plants, fish and corals, new dive and snorkel sites and we continue developing new excursions to enjoy the “ISLAND LIFE”. “There is no other destination like this, where everything for a marvelous island holiday is so accessible right on your doorstep but we would like to give you more than a holiday we would like you to immerse yourself in our island way of life.” Nature Unaffected by Time The Marine Park - over eight hundred square kilometres - ensures Mafia´s fragile bio-diversity is preserved. Over four hundred and sixty species of fish and more than fifty genera of corals are here to be enjoyed by snorkeling and scuba diving. Excursions to coastal forests to walk and picnic, and excellent bird-watching in five different habitat types from the reef flats and shores to dry woodlands and coastal forests are part of our activities programme. Road safaris to other areas of Mafia complement the visitor’s experience and understanding of traditional village life. Kirongwe village famous for its clay pots, Jimbo for its ukili mats, Mlola Forest, RasMbizi coconut plantation and Kitoni.

While Mafia is a water paradise we like to point out its many other attractions and interests; its people and their lives, history and archaeology, bird life, plants, and all the many beaches, inlets, islets that make it so beautiful. The main activities we think guests will be interested in while staying in Mafia Island are: Snorkel and scuba in a variety of locations in the Marine Park, Islet and sandbar picnics , Sailing local dhows and ngalawas, Swimming and snorkeling with whale sharks, Sunset sailing trips, Kayaks and windsurfers, Cycling through the farms and rice fields , Game fishing and light sport fishing , Bird watching and nature walks, Visits to local villages to experience local culture and traditional life, Guided visits to historic sites like Ras Kisimani and the Persian ruins on Chole and Juani islands ,Road safaris to forests and remote beaches, plantations and other locations of interest”

Great Reasons to Visit Mafia Island

Scuba diving and snorkelling Mafia Island and its reefs are renowned for excellent, world-class diving and snorkeling. Scientists have confirmed that Mafia has some of the richest reefs in the world, with an unparalleled variety of hard and soft corals and diversity of tropical fish. We have identified fabulous dive sites of immense beauty and richness, bommies, channels, walls and caverns, drift and night dives. These are new sites and we have year of exploration to do. Swim with giants of the sea

One of the biggest things to do on Mafia Island is swimming with Whale Sharks. This experience sits right at the top of my travel memories. Reaching up to 10 metres in length, you will be in for a treat seeing these docile giants up close. Up to 24 can be seen at any one time; males, females and juveniles, all beautifully marked with stripes and spots. The larger sharks are estimated at over 8 meters long, so they are an impressive sight next to the boat, and quite stunning under the water.

Amazing Nature

The terrestrial and reef ecosystems are fascinating and at Kinasi we have spent a great deal of time to research these aspects of the islands. As a result we have guided walks and nature trails to enjoy the native trees, animals and birdlife, cultural visits to villages to understand local village life and watch skilled craftsmen at work, excellent snorkelling and diving, sailing in traditional dhows and ngalawas, and fantastic day picnic trips to outer islands, sand banks and beaches.

History and culture

These well-preserved islands host antiquities dating back to the eleventh century, including ruins at Kisimani Mafia, Kanga, Kua and Chole Island, parts of a mosque of the fifteenth century and buildings of the latter half of the eighteenth century, providing great interest and excursions for those interested in history, ancient trade and the promise of new discoveries.

Friendly People

Welcoming and friendly people are one of the greatest attractions of visiting Mafia Island and you will soon realise that, as for all of East Africa, the people of Mafia are extremely friendly, self-confident but humble, and always ready for a laugh. A lasting memory you will take away is absolutely how happy people are.

Peaceful Place

It may be realized by now, that tourists looking for “night life”, Mafia is not the place to come. Unless of course you wish to include night dives, dinners on the beach, star-gazing and anything else that does not involve discos and casinos. And don’t forget that by the time you have finished the day, evening cocktails and a splendid dinner, we bet you won’t have much energy left to spend in a disco. The island will keep you as busy and occupied as you want to be, to enjoy as much as possible while you are in Mafia.

Bird watching in Mafia Island Bird watching in Mafia adds a very interesting dimension to a Tanzania wildlife safari, as the visitor will see many species of shorebird, including migrants such as the Crab Plover, and other species found in coastal thickets and mangroves that cannot be observed in the National Parks and Reserves. The visitor will see many spectacular rollers (Lilacbreasted) and bee-eaters (White-cheeked) between Kilindoni and Kinasi, and there are five species of sunbird in the Kinasi gardens. The black or white Dimorphic Heron is the common species at roosts in Chole Bay. The Kinasi Nature Trail has been designed with bird-watching very much in mind.
