THE MAGUFULI BRIDGE

Tanzania has completed East Africa’s longest bridge, a landmark 3.2-kilometre structure spanning Lake Victoria in the country’s northwestern Mwanza region. Named the Magufuli Bridge after the late President John Magufuli, the £240 million ($300 million) project represents a significant infrastructure achievement for the nation. The bridge, which connects the Misungwi and Sengerema districts, was constructed by Chinese firms China Civil Engineering Construction Group and China Railway. Notably, the Tanzanian government fully funded the project, which commenced in December 2019 but faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the only extra-dosed cable-stayed bridge in the Lake Victoria region, it stands as one of Africa’s top 10 longest bridges.

Target milestone in Tanzania tourism landscape SWAHILI INTERNATIONAL TOURISM EXPO 2024

The 8th Edition of Swahili international Tourism Expo (S!TE) was successfully held in Tanzania’s commercial city of Dar-es-Salaam from 11th - 13th October 2024 at the mlimani city conference. The three-day exhibition focused on inbound and outbound travel to and within Africa. S!TE 2024 attracted global investors, while emphasising Tanzania’s unwavering commitment to sustainable tourism and economic growth.

The event, organised by the Ministry of Tourism through the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) under the theme “Explore Tanzania for a Lifetime Investment and Seamless Tourism Experience,” serves as a premier platform for promoting inbound and outbound travel to and within Tanzania with a focus on investment opportunities in the tourism sector.

S!TE 2024 marked a significant milestone in the evolution of Tanzania’s tourism landscape. It served as a vital platform for industry stakeholders to connect and collaborate, fostering valuable partnerships that drive innovation and growth.

He also stressed that the Government of Tanzania will continue strengthening Tanzania’s tourism sector by enhancing the operations of ATCL and encouraging other airlines to initiate direct flights between Tanzania and countries that are major tourism markets.

President Mwinyi elaborated that the government will build modern roads and railways that connect tourist attractions, construct and renovate airports and improve other essential tourism services.

The government will also create a favourable investment environment to attract investors, especially in accommodation services within the tourism sector.

Along with the launch of SITE 2024, Air Tanzania (ATCL) and TTB signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote tourism in Tanzania.

S!TE 2024 was attended by more than 75 domestic and overseas exhibitors, over 120 regional and international hosted buyers from more than 23 countries worldwide, and more than 3,000 trade visitors. The expo also featured business exhibitions, speed-networking sessions and familiarisation trips to unique tourist attractions across Tanzania and also hosted Investment Forum to bring together investors from both public and private sectors.

The expo focused on the southern and western regions of Tanzania, along with Zanzibar, showcasing opportunities in areas often overlooked in favour of traditional wildlife experiences.

The three-day tourism expo styled as a business networking

event for the tourism industry, with components of social dimensions to attract local people, families and experts during the weekend.

S!TE 2025 plans to have an even more successful event next year, and hopes to enhance the cultural aspect of tourism even further. S!TE also hopes to have more regional and international tourism organisations and associations participate.

Serengeti National Park

Being surrounded by millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle is a phenomenon you will never forget. In their annual migration north they stampede over open plains, plunge into rivers almost as if they are possessed and are endlessly chased by predators.

The Serengeti is a World Heritage Site, biosphere reserve and one of the New Seven Wonders of Africa.

The park lives up to its ancient Maasai name ‘Siringet’, meaning ‘endless open plains’. The landscape is of mesmerizing beauty. While a sizeable part of the park is made up of seasonally flooded plains, forest and shrub savannah, the Serengeti is mostly about one thing: grass. Golden in the dry season, green and dotted with wildflowers after the rains. It has perfectly adapted to continuous grazing, turning the Serengeti into heaven for large herbivores. Every now and then kopjes – 2,5 billion-year-old rocky outcrops –interrupt the infinite horizon.

The Serengeti offers arguably the most dazzling game viewing in Africa

Together with Loliondo Game Controlled Area, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Maswa Game Reserve, Grumeti Game Controlled Area, Ikorongo Game Controlled Area, and the SouthKenyan Masai Mara National Reserve, the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem covers no less than 35,000 km2. At its heart lies a 27,000 km2 ‘island’ that most animals never travel in and out of. This is where the most breath-taking phenomenon of the planet takes place: the great migration. Undisputed star of the show is the gnu antelope, or wildebeest, meaning ‘wild cattle’ in Afrikaans. Each year in February, a few months before the start of the exodus north, hundreds of thousands of calves are born in a couple of weeks. Many of them are almost immediately chased by eagerly waiting cheetahs, leopards and prides of lion, but there is no appetite big enough to devour 15,000 new-borns on peak days.

Even apart from the migrating wildebeest, zebra and gazelle, the Serengeti offers arguably the most dazzling game viewing in Africa. Approximately 3,800 lions, 350 cheetahs 7,500 spotted hyenas, over 12,000 giraffes and 11,000 elephants roam the savannah. The cat-sized hyrax is often spotted at the kopjes. And all three African jackal can be seen, just as the elusive serval cat, aardwolf and rhino.

The extensive birdlife adds to the magic of an early morning game drive: this is the time when their concert is at its most varied. All the essential species of northern Tanzania, plus endemic ones are present, adding up to 520 species.

The great migration: a trek for water and fresh grazing

•Dry season: from late May to October – November.

•Wet season: from October – November to May (less rainy in January – February).

•Temperatures: 20-25 °C (monthly average), 27-32 °C (daytime), 13-16 °C (night-time), all slightly higher in the rainy season.

Coolest season: May – August (night temperatures sometimes < 10 °C).

•Best time to visit to see the great migration: November –December – May.

Annually, the 1,100,000 wildebeests cover a distance of approximately 800 km. Most of the year they graze in the southeastern part of the ecosystem: from November till May. But once the pastures wither they head for the western Serengeti where they’ll spend June and July, before continuing their journey north towards the juicy grasses of the Masai Mara. But the wildebeest aren’t the only migratory animals; they are joined by extensive herds of zebra and sometimes Thomson’s gazelle. Grant gazelle are migratory too, but cover shorter distances and tent to move on their own.

NOTE: the route and timing of the wildebeest migration is unpredictable. Allow at least three days to be assured of seeing them on your visit and extend your stay if you would like to see the main predators as well. You stand the best chance of seeing the migration between November and May.

Although the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem has probably been functioning for at least a million years, humans arrived quite recently. The nomadic Maasai people and their cattle appeared in the late 18th century. And it wasn’t before 1959 that the outside world got to know the Serengeti, when the German zoologist Berhard Grzimek and his son Michael published their book ‘Serengeti darf nicht sterben’ (Serengeti shall not die).

The extensive birdlife adds to the magic of an early morning game drive

•Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest National Park (established in 1951).

•Serengeti is a World Heritage Site, biosphere reserve and one of the Seven New Wonders of Africa.

•With 14,763 km2 it is Tanzania’s second largest national park; from south to north it stretches 210 km.

•The open areas of around 4,000 km2 are the size of an average East African national park; around 10,000 km2 of the plains continue uninterrupted in the adjacent Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Loliondo Game Controlled Area.

•Height: from 1,200 m (western end) to 2,000 m (eastern and northern areas). Seronera: 1,530 m, Ndutu: 1,630 m, southeastern open plains: 1,700-1,750 m, Lobo: slightly less than 2,000 m.

•The park is easily accessible by road and air, the main roads are passable year round.

•By road: 255 km from Arusha town to Naabi Hill (entry point for the Serengeti National Park), 5-6 hours.

From Naabi to Seronera (park HQ): 1 hour. From Musoma, Sirari and Mwanza: 3 hours.

•By air: daily scheduled flights from Arusha to Seronera, several safari companies offer private flights. The Lobo, Ndutu and Kirawira airstrips are open as well.

Being surrounded by millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle is a phenomenon you will never forget

Accommodation

There are several accommodation facilities inside and outside the park but our recommendation is to stay at Serengeti View Camps. Located in two lovely areas within the Serengeti. The northern camp is based at Togoro near the Lobo Hills. The southern camp lies in a wilderness area next to Moru Kopjes just south of Seronera called Rongai.

What to do

Game drive, balloon safaris, short nature hike at Naabi hills, Walking safaris, Photographing safaris, Camping, bush meal and visits to historical and cultural sites.

Serengeti View Camp – Rongai (South)

Unwind and relax, in your own privacy

Located in a strategic area within the Serengeti National Park, specially chosen to increase the chances of the visitors seeing the magnificent herds of wildebeest and zebra, especially when the routing and timing of the annual migration becomes unpredictable due to irregular weather patterns.

The Camp

Lies in a wilderness area next to Moru Kopjes just south of Seronera on the south-facing slopes of Rongai Hill. From here you have easy access to the open savanna plains between Naabi Hill and Seronera as well as the Western Corridor. Due to the nearby Mbalageti River, hippos are regular visitors to the camp especially in the early evenings when they come out to ‘mow the lawns’ around the dining and lounge tents.

Guest Tents

The 10 en suite guest tents, with double/twin, triple and quadruple occupancy options, all have a small desk as well as a shelf and a luggage rack. The bathrooms are equipped with a flush toilet, hand basin and a shower. Each tent has its own terrace where an early cup of tea or coffee can be enjoyed in privacy.

Life in Camp

Guests at Serengeti View Camps

savour

in the dining tent. The camps offer a variety of dining options, ensuring everyone’s tastes are catered to. Additionally, there’s a lounge tent with a bar, providing a cozy spot to unwind with drinks and fellow travellers while taking in the natural surroundings.

Activities

There are more activities to do while in the park and at the lodge which includes; Game drive in the park which enables you to spot different animals, nature walks in the park, Hot air balloon rides that gives good view of the Serengeti plains, hand craft safaris, Camping, flying safaris, cultural visits in the villages, Bird watching, traditional dances and see wild beast migration.

Driving Distances

Distance to Seronera: 1 hour, to Naabi Hill Gate: 1 hour and to Serengeti View Camp North (Togoro): 2.5 hours.

Sporting Holidays of a Lifetime

As you can imagine, being on the tropical Indian ocean, and having Africa’s largest lakes, Tanzania has also a plenty of water sports, ranging from some of the world’s best diving (both in the ocean and and adrenaline sports. Tanzania has some incredible

Tanzania is a beautiful country. Its landscape and people make it a unique location to undertake any sport. Whether it is early morning training runs past giraffes and zebra to the shores of Lake Manyara or on the slopes on Mount Kilimanjaro, a football match against a local village team, horse riding expeditions in West Kilimanjaro or treks in the Ngorongoro Highlands or from the sun-kissed islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago to the gentle shores of Lake Victoria, the country contains immense cultural and natural wealth.

Asyoucanimagine, beingonthetropicalIndian ocean, andhavingAfrica’slargestlakes,Tanzania from andadrenalinesports.Tanzaniahassomeincredible cultural and natural wealth.”

BALLOON FLIGHTS

Flights by balloon take off as dawn breaks over the Serengeti, the perfect silence of the early morning plains broken only by the soft roar of the balloon. Far below, wildebeest scatter, looking everywhere but up at the silent visitor that floats over their world. Giraffe stand next to acacia trees, untroubled by the airborne visitors. After the thrill of landing, a champagne breakfast awaits, the air becoming warmer as the sun climbs in the sky and curious zebra look up from their grazing at the chink of cutlery in the still, warm bush.

DIVING

Scuba diving the coral reefs off Tanzania’s coast at Zanzibar and Mafia Island offer some of the world’s finest scuba diving. Diving is possible all year round, although the Kusi Monsoon (strongest June-Sept) is accompanied by choppy seas and strong currents that make the more exposed reefs inaccessible. There can also be strong winds in December and January. Visibility is best from

November to march, before the long rains set in.

DEEP SEA FISHING

The water around Zanzibar and Pemba islands is considered by experts to offer some of the best fishing in the world, especially the Pemba Channel, between Zanzibar and Pemba islands, or around Mafia Island, south of Zanzibar. Big game fish include barracuda, kingfish, sailfish, billfish, wahoo, Dorado and blue marlin.

Just some of the areas to fly are the Usambara, the Rift valley and numerous hills around Mt. Meru. Microlight flights are now also available over Lake Manyara and the Great Rift Valley.

GOLFING

there are now several hotels and lodges in Tanzania and Zanzibar offering world class spa facilities to keep you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

BOAT SAFARIS

PARAGLIDING & MICROLIGHT FLIGHTS

There are some fabulous areas to paraglide. Very few people paraglide in Tanzania, therefore it is a novelty. Always seek permission from the local village, explain what you are doing and where you think you will land (it is illegal to fly over national parks).

Although not a golfing destination, there are numerous golf courses throughout the country, including Dar es Salaam and Arusha. The local clubs are always very welcoming to any visitor who may wish to swing the odd club. Contact your tour operator for details as to the nearest golf course to where you might be staying.

SPA TREATMENTS

The soft chug of an outboard engine, or the whispering flap of a canvas sail; boat safaris in Tanzania are a tranquil and relaxing way to watch wildlife. One of the best ways to see the Selous Game Reserve, up the huge muddy brown sweep of the Rufiji River, leopard whisking away from rocks at the boat’s approach. Sail into chimpanzee territory on a dhow, skimming over the Wami River in Saadani, surrounded by amazing birdlife, hippos and alligators.

The perfect way to ease limbs after an exhilarating day’s game viewing or in preparation for the beach,

HORSE AND CAMEL RIDES

Day rides are available from a few camps in Tanzania, for all standards of rider, and game animals are not afraid of horses in the same way that they are of cars or pedestrians, allowing visitors to approach the wildlife much more closely than usual.\

CANOEING

Canoeing trips are available in the Arusha National Park and are a wonderful experience, drifting past herds of elephant, giraffe, hippo and buffalo as you cruise along the shores of the Lake surrounded by countless flocks of birds.

MOUNTAIN CLIMBING AND HIKING

For most climbers who visit Tanzania, the 5,869m Kilimanjaro is the top

MOUNTAIN BIKING

For the fit and adventurous, mountain biking through the African landscape is truly an exciting experience. Avoid roads and traffic and ride through deserts and forests, up mountains and down valleys, through tiny villages and bustling market towns, then into the true wilderness past herds of antelope, giraffe and zebra.

prize. Mt Meru, another of Tanzania’s volcanic peaks, is also popular, with the varied animal and plant life to be found on its slopes a major draw. Meru is Africa’s fifth highest peak, with fabulous views of Mt Kilimanjaro and the Momela Lakes from the summit. The challenging ascent to the crater of Ol Donyo Lengai passes through some fantastic scenery, with panoramic

views of the Rift Valley. The track to the top of Lengai is very steep, and a true challenge attempted only by hikers with a good level of fitness.

WALKING IN THE WILD

A walk through the African

bush is a wonderful way to experience Africa intimately. Smells and sounds become distinct and varied, and smaller creatures gain significance. They are no longer simply rushed past in the race for the bigger game. When larger animals do appear, they are met at eye level; the land is truly shared between humans and animals. Safety is not an issue- all walks are accompanied by armed, experienced guides and game rangers. Walks can be from a few hours to a full day with picnic lunch. Many hotels and camps will offer guided walks in the national parks or community areas.

We believe that activities and sports is a language that helps peoples communicate throughout the world. Enjoy the activities and sporting of Tanzania and make your Holiday a life time enjoyable.

FLY-IN SAFARIS ACROSS TANZANIA WITH SAFARI AIR LINK

Safari Air Link is your gateway to Tanzania

What distinguishes travelling around Tanzania with Foxes Safari Camps is our family-owned and -managed airline, Safari Air Link. With a fleet of five Cessna 208 Caravans, each of which can accommodate up to 13 passengers, we are renowned for our expert crew who have extensive experience flying to remote bush airstrips.

With Safari Air Link, you can travel between Tanzania’s southern, western and northern safari circuits, as well as the coastal circuit should you wish to stay at a private island retreat. With the flexibility of dynamic scheduling with our private aircraft fleet, travellers can expect a hassle-free journey across Tanzania.

This makes planning your tailor made journey across southern Tanzania that much easier and more convenient, so that you can spend more time on safari, rather than on the road travelling between lodges and national parks. Book your flight and leave the rest up to us!

Our extensive network of routes not only connects major tourist hubs across Tanzania –such as Dar es Salaam with Zanzibar and Mafia Island – but also reaches far-flung regions that would otherwise require more time and effort to reach. Katavi National Park in southwestern Tanzania, for example, boasts one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the country per kilometre squared. And with only three permanent lodges in the park, there are only ever a handful of travellers here at any given time. Meaning

you have unbeatable wildlife sightings almost all to yourself.

As with our other operations, Foxes Safari Camps has been committed to responsible tourism from the very beginning and also in everything that we do. Not only does Safari Air Link have a fuel-efficient fleet of aircraft, but our ongoing carbon offset programme has our family business plant over 3 million trees to make us a carbonnegative airline.

The park consists of three main attractions. Primary, among these is the Ndumbi River Valley, the real jewel of the protected area. Small streams broad valley to form Ndumbi River, which is one of the main tributaries of the Great Ruaha River.

Though she could not reveal the nature of investments but hinted that they will create at least 301,000 jobs if successfully implemented.

She said her trip has generally been successful in that besides launching the documentary she reached out to the international financing agencies which included

Discussions were held between her delegation and an American multinational involved in manufacturing of hightech cleaning supplies.

The giant private entity pledged to support the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), the Ifakara Health Institute and an insect control institute in Tanga.

On tourism, she said the response of the American

market since The Royal Tour film was premiered has been positive.

“Of course, not much was known on some Tanzania tourism insights but the market response was generally good,” she told a crowd at the airport.

She lauded the private sector players within and outside the tourism sector for their contribution to the successful shooting of the film.

“We should expect goodies,” she said as she headed for Arusha city where she later launched the documentary at the Arusha International

“We, stakeholders, have a role to play too. We should emulate the President’s efforts”.

Mr Malalika, who is the director of Arusha-based

40TH AFRICAN UNION FOR HOUSING FINANCE

President Mwinyi louds CRDB Bank on mortgage lending

The president of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, Dr. Hussein Mwinyi has lauded CRDB Bank for the role it plays in mortgage lending calling for extra efforts to empower more people to afford decent housing.

President Mwinyi gave the comments when he officiated the 40th annual African Union for Housing Finance (AUHF) conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) that took place from 14 October18 October 2024 at the Melia Hotel where CRDB Bank has rejoined the continental body.

“By June 2024, I have been told that, the number of commercial banks and financial institutions offering

mortgages were 31 which offered a total of TZS 625 billion equivalent to US$ 234.3 million mortgage debt outstanding for residential housing. Though this shows how far we have reached, more efforts are needed to make sure everyone gets access to a mortgage as it is a certain approach to owning a good house and living decently,” says President Mwinyi.

President Mwinyi reiterated that having CRDB Bank lead in mortgage lending by 34.4% sets a very good example to its competitors who need to come up with sophisticated strategies to reach a wider range of customers hence contributing more to the mortgage sector and the economy in general.

Meanwhile, the president asked commercial banks and financial institutions to offer their best advice on how to curb the factors contributing to only a few people being able to afford a mortgage in the country. Despite having a substantial number of lenders in the country, President Mwinyi said many Tanzanians cannot access and afford mortgages, leading to them taking a long time to complete construction of their houses which is far more costly.

“You are the experts in the field. The government doors are open to welcome your opinions on how to deal with the incumbents. Please collaborate with us to curb them and allow as many Tanzanians as possible to

afford a mortgage,” calls President Mwinyi.

On the contribution it has had, CRDB Bank’s Director of Retail Banking, Bonaventura Paul says as of June 2024, we had offered a total of TZS 208.34 billion benefiting 1,628 customers and that our capacity is more than that hence welcoming more customers to take the advantage to build and own decent houses.

“At CRDB Bank we offer mortgages for both, commercial and residential housing. We are liquid enough to cater for the needs and expectations of our customers. We welcome anyone who is willing and capable for the loans,”

CRDB Bank has in this year rejoined the African Union for Housing Finance (AUHF), a member-based association that brings together mortgage banks, building societies, housing corporations, and other housing finance organizations from 17 countries across the continent to mobilize funds for affordable shelter and housing across Africa.

Bonaventura emphasises the importance of pulling up more resources as the existing financial institutions can only offer mortgages to suffice 200,000 housing

units a year leaving the country with the deficit of 3 million it has had for a long time untouched. He says if nothing innovative is done, the country will still sustain the deficit for many more years to come, impacting even the future generations.

Official mortgage data shows that overall average mortgage debt size as of June 2024 was TZS 104.8 million equivalent to $39,2862 with demand for housing and housing loans remaining extremely high but constrained by inadequate supply of equitable houses and highinterest rates charged on housing loans, challenges calling for a collective effort to deal with.

welcomes Bonaventura.

“Lack of title deeds to most Tanzanians is one of the biggest challenges for many to afford a mortgage. The government should look and see how it can better deal with the situation. Once this is dealt with, many will qualify for the loans offered,” insists Bonaventura.

Research shows that only 3% of Tanzanians own a title deed hence meeting one of the qualifications for mortgage leaving out

a very large number of unqualified people who are forced to construct houses with alternatively more costly sources of finance.

In this year’s conference, which AUHF has partnered with the International SecondaryMortgage MarketsAssociation (ISMMA), aims to enhance market development, improve efficiencies, and address challenges in housing markets across the

continent where housing shortage is a critical challenge to many countries.

O OPPTTIINNG G FOR AN ENTREPRENEURSHIP

C CAARREEEER

R

Why It Is the Best Long-Term Career Option

We have grown up believing that getting a job achieving one’s career, but tell you what entrepreneurship plays a much greater role than anything else! With entrepreneurship, you are rest assured to have a long-lasting career.

Let’s unravel together on the why entrepreneurship is thebest a long-term career!

1.It’s a Personal Management Thing

Sometimes, it is best to walk alone, rather than in a group, because having a group comes with misunderstandings, unbalanced teamwork and lack of solidarity, but as a single person, one is free to decide on his/her ideas, committing to one thing for the long run, working effectively to achieve the intended goal and carrying out management skills such as planning, delegation, problem solving and communication that will guide him/her into making his/her career a long term one.

2. It Is Limitless

There is no such thing as age

retirement. The good part, is you can start at an early age working as an entrepreneur and even at the age of eighty, you will still be kicking, compared to short term careers such as being employed, which gives you only a minimum time. Therefore, the pressure of whether you are getting old and will soon be out of the office that you’ve been working for about twenty years, can be removed by one single choice of being an invested entrepreneur. “study for an hour a day.

Double your learning and you will tripple your success” - ROBIN SHARMA.

3. It Adopts to the Change of the Environment

A self employed person has the benefits to move with the change of time, let’s say it’s a season of mangoes, you will then sell mangoes and if it’s the season of pineapples, you will then sell pineapples.

An entrepreneur has the advantage to deal with these changes according to his/her preferences compared to an employed person who has to stick to one thing only and has the risks of whether he/ she will be fired or get a salary decrease.

An entrepreneur and an employed person both share one thingskills, at the end of the day, it is your choice to see where you fit in the most and walk towards that path.

If you’re going to make the leap, know that you will work hard and have to beginning) and might not have much of a personal life, due to the time commitment of running a business.

LEVERAGE CONNECTIONS

Don't be afraid to leverage the connections you have made, both personally and professionally. There are many people — in particular, other small business owners — who know what challenges you face. Ask them: Do they know the best way to advertise your brand? Who are the best contractors to hire? Does their business need someone to

locations to rent available near their businesses where you could open a store or further expand your business? Leverage friends and family for help, whether it’s running to the store for you, helping with posting to social for you. If someone is good with bookkeeping, spreadsheets or typing up letters — recruit them!
