AFRICAN VIEW CAMPS & LODGES

Exploring Tanzania’s wide-open plains is a breath-taking experience in itself. So imagine being free to leave your vehicle and let some vertical adventure add to the drama. In Arusha National Park, the majestic Mount Meru awaits, ready to be tamed on foot! The exhilaration of reaching the top only increases with Mount Kilimanjaro revealing its snowy peak to the East. The ultimate view over one of Africa’s most picture perfect landscapes.

Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park gives you the opportunity to explore nature at its closest. There are good trekking facilities along the climbing route. The route passes through diverse habitats: swamps, open plains, montane forests and volcanoes, all packed within a distance of 35 km.

The most striking landmarks are Mount Meru and the Ngurdoto caldera, formed after volcanic eruptions between 1 and 3 million years ago. Mount Meru hasn’t put on a show in over a century, but 6,000 years ago a huge explosion blew away the eastern edge, causing a massive landslide. It is also how the mesmerizing north-eastern Momela Lakes were born. Due to different levels of alkalinity, each of these seven lakes boasts its own spectacular greenish-blue tone. The water is dotted pink with lesser and greater flamingos, while every now and then you might meet the eyes of a hippopotamus. The extinct Ngurdoto volcano in the east is home to a mini Ngorongoro. Looking down from the crater rim you see montane forests – keep an eye open for the majestic Fig Tree Arch – while an open, swampy bottom spreads out below it, at an altitude of around 1,470 metres.

The extinct Ngurdoto volcano is home to a mini Ngorongoro

The entire park is full of life. You will encounter herds of buffalos (the park’s most abundand species), zebra and giraffe often, but warthog, waterbuck, pairs of dik-dik and reedbuck are also frequent sights. Other mammals roaming the area are the elusive aardvark, the bush pig and the crested porcupine. The low braying call of the silvery-cheeked hornbill regularly penetrates the silence, just as the harsh rhythmic cry of the endangered black and white colobus monkey. And this is not the only acrobat in the dense forest; there are also plenty of vervet monkeys, blue monkeys and olive baboons to be seen. The well-trained spotter’s

eye will be treated to almost 450 bird species. Although you won’t hear the ferocious roar of a lion very often – the last temporary visit took place in the late 1990’s – other big cats can be sited. Keep an eye open for spotted hyena, wild cat, leopard and, on the slopes of Mount Meru, even a wandering elephant.

The well-trained spotter’s eye will be treated to almost 450 bird species

But it’s the feeling of solitude that might just be the best asset of Arusha National Park. Even being hemmed in by human settlements, Arusha Park is the quietest amongst the six bestknown parks in northern Tanzania.

Walking up Meru: a spectacular four-day trek

NOTE: don’t forget to look down every now and then for two very local species of chameleons. The conspicuous three-horned Jackson’s chameleon –frequently seen around Miriakamba Hut – and the Ruwenzori side-striped chameleon, which might reveal itself around Saddle Hut.

- Day 1: a 10 km trek from Momela to Miriakamba that takes about 5 hours (ascent 1,014 metres)

- Day 2: a 4 km trek to Saddle hut that takes about 5 hours (ascent 1,056 meters)

- Day 3: Rest day

- Day 4: a 22 km trek to the summit and back to Momela that takes about 16-17 hours (ascent 996 metres, descent 3,066 metres)

•Arusha National Park is the second oldest park in Tanzania together with Lake Manyara. It was established in 196o.

•It’s one of the smallest national parks: with its 542 km2 (and only 35 km from east to west) it’s 4% of the size of the Serengeti. The most recent enlargement took place in 2005: land was added on almost all sides and the area almost quadrupled.

•Height: from 1,450 metres (Momela Lakes) to 4,566 metres (summit of Mt Meru). The entrance gates and major park roads lay at around 1,500 metres.

•The park is easily accessible by road, a 35 km drive from Arusha town.

The climb of Tanzania’s second highest mountain starts in the wooded savannah roamed by buffalos and giraffes. Between an elevation of 1,500 en 3,300 metres you are surrounded by montane forests full of birds and monkeys. From here up to 3,900 metres giant heathers dominate the terrain. You conquer the final metres to the summit in a barren alpine zone and an upland desert.

What to do

Game driving, walking safaris, canoeing, climbing Mount Meru.

Accommodation

There are several accommodation facilities inside and outside the park but our recommendation is to stay at African View Lodge Lying at the foot of Mount Meru with stunning views of the mountain and nestled in the small village of Ngongongare, you will find our African View Lodge. This charming little lodge has 23 en-suite rooms with breath-taking views of Mount Meru. The reception, dining room and bungalows have been designed using local materials including Meru-styled ceilings which are covered with banana leaves. In the evenings, whilst enjoying a sundowner on “Meru View platform” to round off the day, chefs will be busy preparing tasty meals made with fresh ingredients straight from the markets. Climb Mount Meru

The fifth-highest mountain in Africa

At a height of 4,566 meters (14,980 ft), Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano located in Arusha National Park, 70 Kilometres (43 miles) west of Mount Kilimanjaro in the country of Tanzania. Typically Mount Meru Climb takes four days, but it can be done in 3 days to complete a trek to the Summit.

It is visible from Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day, and is the fifth-highest mountain in Africa, dependent on definition. Climb Mount Meru, second highest Mountain in Tanzania, is great with no traffic and amazing wildlife experience as you hike past wild animals.

Mount Meru Key facts

•Tanzania’s second tallest mountain at4,566m

•Abundant wildlife sightings on day 1 of the climb

•Great acclimatisation climbs before tackling Kilimanjaro

•Ascent and descent via the Momela route over 3 days

•Dormitory style hut accommodation

While Mount Kilimanjaro the highest mountain in Africa gets the bulk of the attention when it comes to climbing in Tanzania, there are other peaks that are worth considering too. Most prominent amongst them is Mount Meru, which is found a short distance to the west of Kilimanjaro and serves as a great warm-up trek for those who have the time and are looking for an even bigger adventure. Mount Meru climbing is very rewarding.

Standing 4565 meters (14,980 feet) in height, Mt. Meru is a more approachable climb than Kilimanjaro and serves as a great stand-alone hike in its own right. Many trekkers choose to use Mount Meru as an acclimation hike prior to starting their trek up Africa’s highest peak. Doing so increases their chances of a successful summit on Kilimanjaro and can reduce the number of days needed to climb to the summit at Uhuru Peak.

Visitors to Mount Meru are more likely to spot wildlife along the trail, particularly in the early days of the hike. Often times a ranger will accompany trekking groups on the first day of the journey to ensure they make it safely to the first campsite.

From there, the route wanders up the north side of Meru’s volcanic crater, before approaching the true summit itself. At the top, the views are outstanding, particularly with Kilimanjaro gleaming tantalizingly in the distance.

Typically Mount Meru Climb takes four days, but it can be done in 3 days to complete a trek to the top as even on this lower peak, acclimatization is

the key to success. All trekking groups take the same route up the mountain, which begins at Momella Gate.

Hikers will stay in a series of huts on their way to the top, with basic but comfortable accommodations located at two different campsites prior to the going to the summit, which is located at a place called Socialist Peak.

Mount Meru Climbing offers two advantages to travelers. First, it allows trekkers a chance to experience what it is like to climb Kilimanjaro on a smaller scale, providing a grand adventure for those who don’t have a lot of time in their schedule or don’t want to deal with the higher altitude found on Kilimanjaro.

But perhaps more importantly, it truly is a wonderful way to prepare for the larger challenges that they’ll face on Kilimanjaro, taking some of the mystery and acclimatization process out of the picture before ever stepping foot on the mountain.

Climbing Kilimanjaro offers Mount Meru 3 day or 4-day Climbs. However, clients from different parties and operators are often combined to walk with the armed ranger on the lower slopes.

Ruaha River Lodge

The River Lodge was the first camp built in the area, and was erected in one of the most spectacular locations imaginable. The lodge’s remote location offers a variety of landscapes - from mountains and escarpments to grassland plains. The lodge extends along the rocky shores of the Great Ruaha River, affording views up and down its banks. Game animals are drawn to the river from the neighbouring hills, and guests can see great wildlife dramas unfold from the comfort and protection of their self-contained natural stone and thatch ‘cottage’.

Discover why Ruaha is Tanzania’s best-kept secret with Foxes Safari Camps

Nestled along the banks of the Great Ruaha River in Ruaha National Park, Ruaha River Lodge offers guests private riverside cottages designed to blend naturally with the surrounding landscape.

This is where it all started for the Foxes Safari Camps in January 1982, when Ruaha River Lodge became the first in the Fox Family’s portfolio of properties – and indeed the first property in the national park. Together with their team of guides, they will ensure that you enjoy your stay at the Ruaha River Lodge.

` Nature Experience

Ruaha River Lodge offers comfortable lodge accommodation and a range of activities for a true Safari experience.

Game drives are the predominant activity in Ruaha National Park. The park has a vast network of all-weather roads, so large tracts of the park are accessible to visitors.

Not only does this increase the chance of seeing more animals, it also disperses the vehicles more evenly around the park so that you will not meet many other vehicles on your safari. The highly trained, English-speaking guides will lead you to an abundance of wildlife sightings, which could include leopard, lion, cheetah and hunting dog, not to mention several rare species including greater and lesser kudu, roan and sable antelopes. Specialist guides having built up extensive local knowledge whilst living and working in the park. This ensures you don’t miss out on the flora and fauna that normally go unnoticed by the untrained eye. For a more intimate experience,

guided game walks are offered during the dry season (May to November). Ruaha River Lodge also offers fly-camping excursions, which allow you to spend two nights camping in the wilderness. To take advantage of this special opportunity, prebooking is required.

By road, Ruaha is a 2-hour drive from Iringa Town. Road transfers from Iringa can be arranged with your booking.

Best Time to Visit

Ruaha National Park can be visited at any time of year. However, the best time for game viewing is during the dry season from June until December, when wildlife converges on the dwindling water reserves and concentrates along the great Ruaha River, which is the park’s only permanent water source. During the ‘rains’ from late December until April, the trees sprout green leaves and the Ruaha River swells into a bursting torrent. nThe rainy season is the best time for bird-watching, as the population of birds swells with both the northern and southern migratory species visiting Ruaha.

RUAHA NATIONAL PARK

Second Largest National Park In Africa

For anyone seeking a true African wilderness experience, a visit to Ruaha National Park is essential. One of Tanzania’s wildest parks, Ruaha can only be described as a true, unspoiled, natural wilderness. Because of its distance from any major city, very few tourists visit the park each year. Yet those who do are treated to unsurpassable wilderness and complete isolation. Ruahas’ greatest secret lies in its extraordinary diversity of animals, plants and birds.

With its harsh and rocky landscape, no other park in Tanzania epitomises the definition of “wild Africa” quite like Ruaha National Park. After the annexation of two other major conservation areas, Ruaha is now the largest national park in Tanzania, covering a vast area of 23,000 square kilometres (substantially larger than Wales!). While few are familiar with the park, national park connoisseurs recognize it as one of the most spectacular in Africa.

The vast majority of the park above the escarpment termed “Miombo Woodland ‘’ is rarely visited by tourists, as it is relatively difficult to reach and known for challenging game viewing and an abundance of tse-tse flies. The scenery in Miombo is quite dramatic, with tall Brachystegia trees forming continuous woodland housing for some specialist species of antelope, such as the magnificent sable, as well as several miombospecializing birds.

The low-altitude Ruaha Valley is the more developed section of the park, which covers little more than a third of the park’s total size. The Ruaha Valley has a decent road network for game viewing and a variety of vegetation types, thus offering a diverse game drive experience without the annoyance of tse-tse flies. The Great Ruaha River, which is known as the park’s lifeline, attracts big herds of animals of all shapes and sizes and flows right through the Ruaha Valley. Some of Ruahas’ best features are found in the valley, from massive rocky hills and outcrops to dense, impenetrable bush and open grasslands in the east. The most striking features are numerous serpentine dry “sand rivers”, which crisscross the park and are lined with dense vegetation,

BIRDING IN RUAHA NATIONAL PARK

For birdwatchers, Ruaha’s birdlife is sure to please. There are a recorded 530 different species of birds in the park, including giant herons, saddle-billed storks, white-headed plovers and white-backed night herons. There are six species of both vultures and hornbills, and raptors abound. The crested barbet, an attractive yellowand-black bird whose persistent trilling is a characteristic sound of the southern bush, can also be found in Ruaha alongside central Tanzanian endemics such as the yellow-collared lovebird and ashy starling. The park’s birds make their home among the branches of Ruaha’s 1600 species of trees,

which is twice as many as the number of species in the great Selous Game Reserve, although Ruaha is only half the size of Selous.

WILDLIFE IN RUAHA NATIONAL PARK

Only two words can define the wildlife at Ruaha National Park: wild and beautiful. The park holds an incredible array of animals. Among Tanzanian parks, Ruaha possesses one of the highest species counts of large mammals. The park holds an estimated 20,000 elephants alone, and it is not uncommon in the dry season to see well over 100 elephants in a single drive. Hippos rule the river, and vast quantities of these animals can also be seen sunning themselves along the stunning river

where many animals take refuge.

sandbanks in the early morning. Massive herds of buffalo, with up to 500 animals plus seen in a single herd, coexist alongside giraffes, zebras, impalas, elands, crocodiles, lions and leopards.

Ruaha is also home to some very rare creatures. Sable antelope can occasionally be found in the Miombo areas as well as in the springs in the western part of the park. Roan antelope are also sometimes seen in the eastern area of the park. Lesser kudus and grant’s gazelle are intermittently spotted at the southernmost point of their geographical range. Dik-diks abound all over the park, and rarely does a drive return without having glimpsed the noble greater kudu. Ruaha is also home to the second largest population of wild dog in Africa. As the majority of the park’s wild dogs live in the inaccessible wilderness areas of the north, only a few lucky visitors spot them.

WHY VISIT RUAHA NATIONAL PARK?

• Untouched, Pristine

Nature: Ruaha is one of the less frequented national parks in Tanzania, which means that the park’s wildlife

has hardly been altered by human intervention.

• Personalized Wildlife

Watching: Because Ruaha is expanding in size yearly, the chances of bumping into other vehicles that can startle an animal you may be already watching are limited.

• Lots to Discover: In areas where park authorities have formal tracks, there are no access restrictions, which allows visitors a great deal of freedom to explore undiscovered territory. Currently, Tanzanian park authorities are adding more routes while carefully monitoring the ecological impact, thus ascertaining that the wildlife remains as undisturbed as possible. There are plans to add up to 1500 kilometers of road networks.

• Go by Foot: Ruaha is one of the few national parks in Tanzania where walking safari is permitted when accompanied by an armed ranger. This liberty gives nature enthusiasts an opportunity to receive an up-close and personal experience with wildlife in dense places where safari

vehicles cannot penetrate.

GETTING TO RUAHA NATIONAL PARK

There are two ways guests can reach Ruaha National Park. One is by road, through Iringa from Dar es Salaam via Mikumi, or from Arusha via Dodoma. Ruaha is also accessible by plane. Scheduled charter flights are available from Dar es Salaam, Selous, Serengeti, Arusha, Iringa and Mbeya through Safari Air Link, Flight Link and Coastal Aviation.

WHEN TO GO

To see predators and large mammals, dry season (mid-May to December); to see birds, lush scenery and wildflowers, wet season (January to April). The male greater kudu is most visible in June, which is the breeding season.

For the more discerning safari lover who is looking for an ‘off the beaten track’ pure wilderness experience, a visit to Ruaha to view its large beasts, stunning vistas, numerous baobabs and unique birds and animals must not be missed!

Supports learners with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities

As a parent/guardian in this era of information, it can be overwhelming to track your child’s development and worry about milestones and so many red flags we read about. The simple rule should be to trust your intuition, if you feel your child is delayed or relating differently to you then that is your primary reason to visit your paediatrician. Paediatricians can be a first

step to understanding if the delays you have observed are a need of concern. Post a paediatric consultation, if further concern remains, then the concerned healthcare professionals are Neurodevelopmental paediatricians or neurologists.

The journey only begins with a diagnosis, from there a whole world of inclusive and special education starts.

It is a different journey for you and your child but not a worse journey. Centres such as AMSEN move beyond just educating your child, but provide holistic learning in independence skills, social skills, vocational skills and more to ensure your child receives all the possible knowledge to transition into a fulfilling life.

So what should you as a parent watch out for?

Diversity in students and their experiences has never been more celebrated than at Al Muntazir Special Education Needs (AMSEN). AMSEN is a bespoke centre that supports learners with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities. Neurodevelopmental Disabilities is an umbrella term that carries within it diagnoses such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Down Syndrome, Epilepsy, Intellectual Disabilities, Severe Learning Disorders and other conditions that affect how an individual perceives and interacts with their surroundings.

The reality is each of the conditions mentioned could have different presentations, with a genetic condition like Down Syndrome, the distinct facial features could be a telltell sign. For conditions like Autism, delays in speech, repetitive behaviours, intense emotional reactions or rigidity in schedules could be a sign. For intellectual disabilities, severe delays in all forms of learning academic and life skills could be a reason for

concern. Each condition has specific signs and parents can utilise the internet to read about the delays they have observed and meet a healthcare professional for further guidance.

Every child deserves a childhood and their right to education, if you are afraid and uncertain about your child and their development patterns reach out to us or your healthcare provider. You

are not alone on this journey, and neither is your child! Embrace the diversity in your child and there is always a place like AMSEN to support their learning journey.

Open A Savings Account

There are a lot of banks

Don’t Spend Your Paycheck Before Receiving It

This is the code word for debt. Spending your paycheck before receiving it is when you take loans or buy things that you may not even need, promising to pay after you receive your salary. This will set you back from your way

you get your salary, you will have to pay for debts instead of saving your money.

Never Spend More Than What You Earn

If it is possible, you are advised

things that are not important, minimize your budget for luxury things and live within your budget by keeping track of your spendings. Remember that spending impulses won’t freedom.

The art of making and saving money is one that needs so much discipline. As an employee, they major advantage you have is knowing how much money you earn in a day or month, hence helping you to make a clear budget within your means. With patience and discipline, freedom.
