nce again, Tanzanian women from across the country were brought together to celebrate each other’s work and accomplishments at the bi-annual Tanzanian Women of Achievement Awards event. Each of the over 400 women who attended the event on 7th March are pioneers in their fields, paving the way and working to reshape Tanzania for the better. The theme of this year’s awards was Women Leading the Way, paying tribute to exceptional women in the country who have not only achieved success in their respective fields but have made a significant difference in their communities.

“The event, which was organized by the board of TWA Association and Frontline Porter Novelli, was graced by Dr. Darleana McHenry, who is an education activist, the CEO/President of St. Carries Center, and the 2014 Woman of the Year from the 42nd Assembly District in the State of California. Speaking on the agenda of the event, Dr. McHenry said, “Women leading the way is all about how women can pick up the mantal, take charge of their lives and those who they care about, forge ahead and become icons. For years we’ve done a lot as women. We have built houses and planted gardens; we have nurtured children and done business. But most importantly, we have emancipated ourselves from the norm that men are the solution to every problem.” 16 I Dar Life I April 2015

The awards recognized women who have contributed in various sectors including; Arts and Culture, Business Entrepreneurship, Education, Social Welfare, Science and Technology, Sports, Young Achiever, Agriculture, Professional, Information and Communication, and Health. The Committee chair, Ms. Sadaka Gandi, explained that, “What we are looking for is women who have done great in their fields and gone a step further to use their achievement by giving something back to the society. Having personal success is one thing but pairing it with giving back to the society is what makes a true woman of achievement.” There were over 500 applications this year from all over the country, but only 40 nominees were shortlisted. It was a tough decision to make, but with the help of Delloite’s judging tool, the committee was able to come up with at least three finalists within each category and eventually one winner. The different winners of each category are:

1. Multichoice Tanzania, Arts and Culture Award: Dr. Penina Mlama, Professor at the University of Dar es Salaam specializing in Art in Education, Culture and Development, Theatre for Development, and Gender in Education and also the Executive Director of the Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) Tanzania. 2. CCBRT, Heath Award: Ms. Mpendwa Chihimba, Chairperson, National Network of Tanzania Women with HIV/AIDS (NETWO) 3. TCRA, Information and Technology Award: Ms. Baldina Sembu, Producer and Presenter of JARIDA LA WANAWAKE, a special program that focuses on women’s social, economic, cultural and political issues. Ms. Sembu is also an advocate for disabled women’s rights. 4. UMATI, Education Award: Ms. Nahida Esmail, Founder of RAIDA High School and Professor Emeritus at the University of Dar es Salaam. EATV, Young Achiever Award: Ms. Jennifer Shigoli, Managing Director, Malkia Investment Company and Founder of the Choo Salama Foundation, which creates awareness on issues related to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and has engaged with over 23,000 students in public schools. 11. of the Tanzania Horticultural Association. 12. Sports Award: Ms. Angel Eaton, President of the Boxing Federation of Tanzania. She has also won various golf tournaments including the Zambia Ladies Open, Tanzania Ladies Open, Mombasa Ladies Open, Uganda Open, and Morogoro Ladies Open. 13. FNP, Woman of the Year Award: Ms. Prisca Komba, Assistant Police Inspector and Head of Gender Desk in Kinondoni District. She runs multiple child protection campaigns and is the initiator of Tanzania Police Gender Desks. “This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award went to Ms. Deborah Mwenda. The prestigious award celebrates a lifelong commitment to serving Tanzania. This award has gone to women such as the late politician Bibi Titi Mohammed in 2009 and philanthropist and educator Dr. Maria Kamm in 2011. The story of this year’s lifetime achiever captured many people’s interest. Mrs. Mwenda, started humbly as a radio vocalist, and went on to create one of the oldest radio programs in the country focused on women and children, “Mama Na Mwana”. She is now the Founder and Executive Director of Bahari Schools.” The awards provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase the work and dedication of women at the frontline of the private and public sectors across the country. Showcasing the work of these women will hopefully inspire young women to become fearless influencers within their communities.

NEWS BITS Ngorongoro Marathon – The Race Against Malaria

The team of Ngorongoro Marathon is excited to host the 8th Annual Ngorongoro Marathon, taking place 18th April 2015 in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. As a unique, communitythemed, multi-cultural event, this year’s Ngorongoro Marathon has been designed to offer a variety of entertainment packages, including, but not limited to: adventure safaris (pre- & postmarathon tour packages), open festivals, overnight carnivals, football matches, stage performances and a red carpet award ceremony. Dar Steps Up for Elephants

The ‘Step Up for Elephants’ fundraising dinner, in support of the Southern Tanzania Elephant Project (STEP), with special guest Dr. Jane Goodall, took place at the Kilimanjaro Hyatt Regency this past month. The event was held to raise awareness about the elephant poaching crisis in Tanzania – including with the use of informative billboards on the city’s streets - and to raise funds for elephant protection. Among the more than 200 guests in attendance was the US Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr. Mark Childress.

Dar was abuzz with a music concert by Electro Bamako that took place at Alliance Francaise this past month. Electro Bamako is an encounter, an interpretation of the vibes & emotions that embody Malian music, including its roots, songs & instruments. Dar Steps up for Elephants Special Fundraiser with Dr. By Josephine Smit “The ‘Step Up for Elephants’ fundraising dinner, in support of the Southern Tanzania Elephant Project (STEP), with special guest Dr. Jane Goodall, took place at the Kilimanjaro Hyatt Regency. The event raised awareness about Tanzania’s elephant poaching crisis and helped raise funds for elephant protection.”

The elephant-poaching crisis Over the last eight years, Tanzania has lost more than half of its elephants to a poaching crisis fuelled by the trade in ivory. Southern Tanzania, home to East Africa’s once great elephant kingdoms – Selous and Ruaha-Rungwa – has seen the worst of the killing. Poaching decimated the Selous elephant population by 66% in only 4 years, from 38,975 elephants in 2009 to 13,084 in 2013. The RuahaRungwa elephant population declined by 36% in this same period, from 31,625 elephants in 2009 to 20,090 in 2013. Elephants face similarly dramatic situations in many parts of their African range, and at the current rate of killing, could go extinct in Africa in less than 10 years. The loss of elephants is not only an ecological disaster – for elephants are key to shaping the ecosystems in which they live – but also represents a major threat to Tanzania’s economically important tourism industry. 24 I Dar Life I April 2015

Jane Goodall Securing a peaceful future for elephants Reversing the elephant poaching crisis will require a total ban on the ivory trade and an end to the demand for ivory, destruction of all ivory stockpiles, arrest and prosecution of the major traders here in Tanzania, and greater protection of elephants on the ground. The Southern Tanzania Elephant Project (STEP) works in Ruaha and Udzungwa supporting the protection efforts of the National Parks, monitoring elephant populations and the effects of poaching, and working with farmers living around National Parks to reduce crop-raiding by elephants and enhance human-elephant coexistence.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;At the event, Dr. Trevor Jones, Director of STEP, presented facts and figures on the poaching crisis, and explained how the growing demand for ivory in Asia has brought Africaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s elephants into the darkest period in their history. Dr. Jones illustrated how poaching is affecting elephant society, and explained that one consequence of poaching is an increase in the proportion of tuskless elephants. individuals possess important ecological knowledge and experience, their loss threatens the survival of younger generations and the viability of remaining elephant populations.” Dr. Jones also spoke of the importance of working to protect elephants on the ground by supporting the anti-poaching efforts of Tanzanian wildlife authorities, and by working with communities to reduce human-elephant conflict and build support for anti-poaching around Protected Areas. He also stressed the urgent need for prosecution of ivory traders and a ban on the ivory trade, adding that strong national and international pressure could ensure these actions are taken before it is too late. This informative presentation was followed by a powerful short film about elephants made specially by photographer Michael North of Rise Up for Elephants. The film provided insight into the intimate social lives of elephants, and was a powerful testament to their beauty.

“Guests were then treated to a moving speech by the event’s guest of honour, Dr. Jane Goodall. Dr. Goodall recalled lovingly her first encounters with elephants on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, and spoke of the similarities between elephants and the chimpanzees she famously studied, highlighting their intelligence and capacity for emotion. elephants grieve their dead and suffer from the traumas inflicted on them by poaching. She spoke, too, of the suffering felt by rangers who risk their lives in a daily battle to protect elephants from poachers.” Dr. Goodall further stressed the importance of preserving elephants as a national heritage and said that one needs only to spend time with elephants to instinctively understand why elephants are worth preserving in their own right. She recounted movingly the story of the very last elephant in Burundi, before they went locally extinct in that country. She finished her speech with the warning that the same thing is about to happen in parts of Tanzania, and an impassioned plea that we have to prevent this from happening The event also raised funds for the work of STEP, with various items being auctioned including an original elephant painting by Sarah Markes, items of Pembe Club jewellery, holidays at Mdonya and Jongomero camps in Ruaha, and a giant elephant made of recycled flip-flops by Green Steps Foundation. Speaking with a few of the invited VIP guests, it was clear that Ally Rehmtullah is one of the most prominent Tanzanian fashion designers. The event started with cocktail hour in the hotel ballroom. Ushers escorted guests to the Serena marquee while walking through an array of Mercedes-Benz vehicles displayed by CFAO Motors, Tanzania. As the guests were seated, the lights dimmed and the show began with a short display of men’s attire from Street Soul. Thereafter, Hisia, a Tanzanian alternative soul singer and songwriter, provided a sense

of harmony before the big bang. “As the model’s tipped high floppy hats for the cameras and others swayed their gowns, Ally Rehmtullah put on a show of sensual – and warm – elegance. The mix of clothes offered a variety of glamorous looks for women. In particular the very sharp jumpsuits for the evening were inspired by women’s inner strength.”

“Art is the concrete representation of our most subtle feelings.” “My work attacts many people in Tanzania and overseas. I was the first Tanzanian artist to be selected for the African festival in Rome Italy in 2004 and in that same year, my artworks were selected to be displayed at the reception of the State House building of the United Republic of Tanzania. In 2007, my artworks were chosen to be displayed at the residence of his Excellency, President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete. I have organized several exhibitions in the USA as well as in Europe and of course in Africa.”

Salum Kambi (he signs his artworks as Sanii Kambi, sanii = artist in Kiswahili) was born on April 10th, 1970 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. His painting “startup” comes from his childhood, when he made caricatures of his schoolmates. After finishing primary school, Kambi was nominated as the best school artist. He is a self-taught artist who has been improving his skills in various workshops organized by art teachers or artists mainly from Germany. A big inspiration for Salum Kambi is well-established Tanzanian painter Raza Mohamed. No wonder - they don´t live far away from each other in Mwenge, Dar es Salaam. Another source of inspiration was his father (though not a painter) who passed recently, as Salum Kambi acknowledged in an interview with Afrum.

Differentiate Yourself Similar to selling proprietary products, you can sell more at a higher price if your

customer perceives your products and services are unique and different than others on the market. Even if you sell products that are not proprietary, you must show your customers what makes you different than everyone else. When you do this successfully, you become the best choice and selling at a higher price will not be an issue. 5. Get Rid of Underperformers - The best way to dramatically lower your costs and improve profitability is to get rid of all your underperformers. Evaluate all of your products and services and shelve them if they are not profitable or help drive sales of other offerings. This was an event not to miss, with an international guest ensemble hailing from various regions mingling with fashionistas, designers, local celebrities and general lovers of fashion. Doreen Mashika opened the show with exclusive designs from her collection that explores the deconstruction of fashion. from the Zanzibari butterfly was a challenge to the modern outlook and perception of beauty and fashion. It was a look into her creativity, an exploration into form and a play on the raw appeal of fabrics/garments. Commenting on her chosen direction of design, Doreen Mashika explained,

The highest point of Kibo, and indeed the whole of Africa, is Uhuru Peak, with spectacular ŐůĂĐŝĞƌƐ ĂŶĚ ƐƚƵƉĞŶĚŽƵƐ ǀŝĞǁƐ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ƉůĂŝŶƐ͕ ĮǀĞ kilometres below. Also on Kibo is the slightly lower peak of Gillman’s point. These are the goals for most climbers. The pinnacle-shaped peaks of Mawenzi are for mountaineers only. Kilimanjaro is located near the town of Moshi and is a protected area, carefully regulated for climbers to enjoy without leaving a trace of their presence. On the lowland slopes, much of the mountains farmland, with coffee, banana, cassava, and maize crops grown for subsistence and cash sale. One inside the park, thick lowland forest covers the lower altitudes and breaks into alpine meadows once the air begins to thin. Near the peak, the landscape is

Uluguru Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc range and are named after the Luguru tribe, a matrilineal group that farms on its verdant slopes. The area has some of the oldest forest in Africa. Hiking in the area is particularly rewarding. A plethora of endemic bird and insect species are found here.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park

which then form rains. This characteristic has made the Udzungwa Mountains the source of water catchments for the tributaries of River Kilombero, which is one among two rivers that form the Rufiji River. The park is unique as the only national park in Tanzania having close canopy and unbroken forest from lowland rainforest at 250m rising to highland forest 2576m, the highest peak in the park. The park has countless small plants such as Saint paullia and myriad large trees (over 30m high) such as Sterculia appendiculata and Antiaris toxicaria. The park has more than 2500 plant species total, with over 160 species known as medicinal plants. Botanists have also recently discovered several endemic plants in the park. “Udzungwa” is probably a linguistic corruption possibly by the Germans of the word “wadsungwa”, which refers to one of the tribes that lives on the slopes of the mountains. The park has numerous cultural and historical sites such as Bokela (mountain God), Mwanaruvele cave, Magombereka cave, Nyumbanitu and Ndundulu mountains. The variety of animal species can be found here, including water buffalo, elephants, leopards, lions and reptiles. Other animals include the rare primate species Red colobus, Sanje crested mangabey monkeys, and black and yellow baboons, which share the same habitat on the mountain slopes. Udzungwa is ideal for hiking and climbing on trails through the rainforests and along the escarpments. The plateau is a natural tower top, with views of sugar plantations against a patchwork of grassland and mountain forest extending over 100 kilometers. The centrepiece is the Sanje River, which reinvents itself as a spectacular waterfall, plunging 170 meters through the forest to land in a mist in the valley below. Visitors can enjoy hiking through dense forest on the steep slope to the waterfalls while viewing the Kilombero flood plain and being entertained by endemic primates, butterflies, and birds songs. Camping is also an option for adventurous visitors.

When To Go

It is possible to visit Udzungwa year-round, although the park gets slippery in the rains. The dry season is June-October before the short rains, but be prepared for rain anytime.

RECEPE CORNER

Morning Glory Muffins “This muffin has a little bit of everything - carrots, raisins, apple butter, wheat germ, nuts. A perfect start for your day!”

Ingredients Original recipe makes 18 muffins   1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup whole wheat flour 1 1/4 cups white sugar 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda  1/2 teaspoon salt

PREP: 15 mins

2 cups grated carrots  1 apple - peeled, cored, and chopped  1 cup raisins 1 egg 2 egg whites  1/2 cup apple butter 1/4 cup vegetable oil  1 tablespoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons chopped walnuts  2 tablespoons toasted wheat germ

COOK: 20 mins

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly oil 18 muffin cups, or coat with nonstick cooking spray.

READY : IN 35 mins mixture until just moistened. Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin cups, filling them about 3/4 full.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, egg whites, apple butter, oil and vanilla.

4. In a small bowl, combine walnuts and wheat germ; sprinkle over the muffin tops.

3. In a large bowl, stir together flours, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, bakingsoda and salt. Stir in carrots, apples and raisins. Stir in apple butter

5. Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the tops are golden and spring back when lightly pressed.
