Swahili International A Unique Platform for Tanzania Tours By Wema Kajo
S
wahili International Tourism Expo (S!TE) is Tanzania’s International Tourism Expo, developed by Tanzania Tourism Board and Managed by Pure Grit Project and Exhibitions who has many years of experience in managing local and international trade events within various business sectors. Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) is proud to announce the second annual International Tourism Expo, which will be held on 1st-3rd October at the Mlimani City Convention Centre in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The Acting Managing Director of TTB, Ms. Devota Mdachi, shakes hands with Mr. Jummy Kibati, Fastjet East Africa General Manager. Also pictured are Public Relations and Marketing Executive, Lucy Mbogoro (left) and S!TE Coordinator, Mr. Philip Chitaunga (right).

From the left is the Chief Sales Officer of Ethiopian Air, Lima Dsilva; the Service Manager of Ethiopian Air, Dawit Mekonnen; Acting Managing Director of TTB, Devotha Mdachi; and the Head of Relations for TTB, Geofrey Tengeneza.
“The Expo will continue to focus on inbound and outbound travel to Africa and is expected to draw hundreds of international tourism and travel professionals, including travel wholesalers. Speaking during a press conference, the Acting Managing Director of Tanzania Tourist Board, Ms. Devota Mdachi said “This year, S!TE will host a total of 50 buyers and reporters from Tanzania’s key tourist markets: USA, UK, Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Spain, India, China, the Netherlands, Japan, Canada, Ireland, Sweden, South Africa and Ethiopia. This unique and effective program is intended to link Tanzanian trade and source markets and maximize the sales potential for S!TE exhibitors.” Out of the 50 hosted participants, Ethiopian Airlines (ET) will facilitate the travel for 30 of them. This makes ET the main sponsor of S!TE for two consecutive years. Other airlines that have partnered with TTB to facilitate travel for hosts are Turkish Airlines, South African Airways and Fastjet. Swahili International Tourism Expo (SITE) is expected to attract more than 120 firms for exhibition from various parts of the world. To ensure that Tanzanian companies fully

participate in the Expo, TTB tourist service manager and also the coordinator of the S!TE, Mr. Philip Chitaunga introduced to the media a new package for S!TE exhibitors which is a tabletop option. This option allows exhibitors who cannot afford to pay for a full stand to pay only $600 and be entitled to a meeting desk, four chairs, one 15-amp plug point, two name badges, and access to an online diary system, the full conference programme, the cultural pavilion, and a pull-up banner. “TTB is also pleased to announce that Terry Dale, CEO and President of the United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA), will be a featured speaker this year. The U.S. is already one of Tanzania’s most vital markets, and through TTB’s USTOA membership, and especially with Terry Dale’s guidance and support, the U.S tour operator programs to Tanzania have grown and diversified. Mdachi added, “Terry Dale’s participation at S!TE will provide an excellent opportunity for Africanbased suppliers and operators to learn more specifics about increasing business from the American market.” Drawing on the success of 2014, S!TE 2015 will provide all participants with the opportunity to meet with qualified buyers from around the globe whose focus is Africa. The effort to establish S!TE in addition to promoting Tanzania as a preferred tourist destination is intended to link the Small and Medium Tourism Enterprises (SME’s) with the international tourism market. It is a fact that many Tanzanian tourism agencies are small-scale enterprises, which have limited capital and ability to access to international tourism markets. S!TE, and in particular the hosted buyer programme, aims to address this challenge. August 2015 I Dar Life I 13

Ethiopian Airline Introduces New Destination
The Zanzibar International Film Festival 2015 kicked off in true Zanzibari style. This year’s festival included long feature films, documentaries, animation films and short movies on the theme “Waves & Vision of Hope”. The programme also included a series of screenings, workshops, concerts, dance performances, exhibitions, literary forums, conferences and a dhow race. The entire festival was a celebration of film and music with over forty filmmakers attending from over a dozen different countries including Vietnam, Canada, the USA, Germany, Denmark, India and closer to home from South Africa, Kenya, Mauritius and across Tanzania.
Ethiopian Airlines, the fastest growing airline in Africa, has launched the much-anticipated new service to Manila, Philippines and Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. Both Manila and Goma flights will be offered thrice weekly. Other new destinations that Ethiopian Airline has introduced are Cape Town (South Africa), Dublin (Ireland) and Los Angeles (USA). Goma will be Ethiopian’s 3rd destination in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in addition to Kinshasa and Lubumbashi. The new flight to Manila will bring the total number of international destinations to 90.
Wellworth Group Expanding
Celebration of Mwakakogwa in Zanzibar
The Wellworth Group is proud to announce their expansion as they have recently opened Lodge Lake Manyara Kilima Moja and Ngorongoro Oldeani Mountain Lodge. The Wellworth Group is a consortium of companies dealing in various trades ranging from hospitality such as hotels and water parks, to leather shops, hardware & building materials, and printing & stationary. The group has expanded and diversified in various businesses ever since its inception and has plans for further expansion particularly in the hospitality, travel and tours industry through acquiring more projects in joint ventures and/or other arrangements.
One of the oldest festivals in Zanzibar is the celebration of Mwakakogwa. The festival is celebrated in many parts of Zanzibar, but it is in Makunduchi, on the island’s southeast coast, that the ancient rites are most enthusiastically followed. Festivities are accompanied by ancient rituals, such as symbolic fires and mock fights, which are believed to ensure peace and harmony for the coming year.

ahazi Jazz and Literary Festival is now in its fifth season since its inception in 2011. The Festival’s organizers are more determined than ever before to reach the public. They hope that the Festival will continue to be a cultural medium to raise awareness and lead the general public to the essence of aesthetics. “Inspiring learning through literature and

music is a cornerstone for Jahazi Festival, but turning Zanzibar into the Mecca of art, music and literature is the truest of its good intentions. As the co-founder of Jahazi, Abeid Karume, questions, ‘Does it get any better than Zanzibar?’ He is frequently heard repeating the mantra that ‘Zanzibar believes in anyone who believes in her.’”
Jahazi 2015 is set to be even more colorful and exciting than previous editions, with a special showcase of male artists leading their bands. The Malian musician, arranger and composer, Salif Keita, will be amongst the exceptional artists performing this year. Reputed the world over as ‘The Golden Voice of Africa’ he is also an ardent advocate of the rights, freedom and protection
of persons living with albinism. Alongside Salif Keita, the other famous artist performing is Cheick Tidiane Seck, who has written for and played with world-famous African bands (FelaKuti, MoryKanté, Salif Keita, Youssou N’Dour) as well as jazz bands (Hank Jones, Dee Dee Bridgewater) and pop musician Damon Albarn
(Rocket Juice & the Moon). Yazz – whose full name is Yasmin Kierkegaard, will also be performing at Jahazi Festival. She is highly respected on the Danish music scene for her smooth style and vocal qualities, her swing, and her large and versatile repertoire. She sings jazz, soul, R&B, Latin and Bossa… Confused? Yazz isn’t. Her versatility is her forte; it
has shaped her unique musical expression. From her beginnings in gospel, she developed and shaped her musical world to fit her taste for various styles. She says that her love of Latin music is no coincidence. Carl Winther, known as one of Denmarks best young piano players, will also be performing. His performance is breathtaking and virtuous. He has a fluent ability to improvise and is an educated jazz and classic musician, with a deep love for Latin and African rhythms. HIs own composition are inspired by all these styles, in addition to the funky styles of Herbie Hancock’s 70’s music and ‘avenge garde’ ideas. The talent of Roman Bunka, a German guitarist and composer, will be on display as well. Bunka’s second instrument is the Arabic Oud, and he is known for his work with Embryo, Fathy Salama, Mal Waldron, Dissidenten, Trilok Gurtu, Charlie Mariano, Mohamed Mounir and Malachi Favors. With his enchanting solo on the Arabic lute, Roman Bunka unites all peoples and cultures.

The programme also included a series of screenings, workshops, concerts, dance performances, exhibitions, literary forums, conferences and a dhow race. This unique integration of film and music was exemplified through an especially memorable day of film and music in perfect harmony that saw the screening of the Moussa Diallo biopic, Sound Tracks of Life Moussa Diallo – followed by a live performance from Moussa Diallo himself. The film screening was introduced by Diallo and filmmaker Helle Toft, who elaborated on the personal yet universal themes in the film – reconciliation and forgiveness. “Festival Director Dr. Martin Mhando had this to say of the selection of films at ZIFF 2015, “The level of films this year has surpassed our wildest expectations and many members of the jury have remarked on the quality of the films. African films in particular have stood
out for their increased production value as well as innovative story telling. We at ZIFF have been thrilled to present such a varied and wonderful range of films this year.” Nightrunners, a thriller set on a remote Kenyan Island, also had its world premiere on Wednesday July 22nd. As the closing night film, Andy Jones premiered his specially created Swahili version of I Shot Bi Kidude in a powerful and memorable event. Kenyan filmmakers were especially successful at ZIFF this year with Wazi?FM (Dir Faras Cavallo) taking home three awards including the top prize, the Golden Dhow for best feature film. Other Kenyan films to be awarded included Angles of My Face (Dir Manu Maina) and Strength of a Woman (Dir Gilbert Lukalia). t is yet another season of fun and excitement as young Tanzanian women vie for the prestigious crown of Miss Universe Tanzania that will be awarded in June. Girls from Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Dodoma, Arusha, Manyara, Shinyanga, Mtwara and Kagera have been selected through an exhaustive process of scouting including a one-on-one interview with each applicant, individual catwalk performances, and body measurements. This process has been the key to identifying successful winners like Illuminata James, Hellen Dausen, Nelly Kamwelu and Nale Boniface in past years.
44 I Dar Life I August 2015

CAREER
Be A Leader At Work 6 Actions You Can Take This Week By Long Yun Siang
“The following actions will inevitably distinguish you as a leader at work without you having to be too obvious about your ambitions.” 1. Take Responsibility - Learn to take responsibility for anything that has your fingerprint on it. That means, as long as you participate in the project, you have a hand at the failure of the project. Learn to take responsibility for not just the good things, but even bad ones. Admit to your mistakes because it’s okay to be wrong. 2. Believe In Win-Win - A rising tide lifts all boats – always think win-win. It exists. Just because the world thinks the business world is nasty, and that you need to be manipulative and maneuvering to win, you need not participate in it. In fact, make it your contribution not to be nasty and bullying in your ways. The power to inspire people to greater heights is in front of you. 3. Do It, Write It - This world is full of people who talk too much and don’t do enough. If
48 I Dar Life I August 2015
you want to be a leader at work, act upon something. Work that plan. If you have any ideas that are simmering in your mind, write it down. It doesn’t matter if it is not a plan yet, just write it down. If you don’t write it down, there is no one to present to and there is no record of the idea. 4. See Opportunities Everywhere - The opportunities to lead are everywhere. You need to be mindful of these opportunities. Are there any opportunities to take on the project no one wants? If you don’t see opportunities everywhere, you are missing the point. 5. Be Open - Be open to criticism, otherwise you are just living off yourself. When you are open to feedback, you are being fed ideas from others that are free. Often times, these ideas come from people smarter than you. They will give you tips on how to improve and how to be better. You need feedback to be a leader at work. With no new ideas, a leader dries up. 6. Give, Give, Give - Give all you have, including ideas, thoughts, and plans. Feel the vulnerability and learn to like it. When you pour all your ideas out you will need new ones. Where do new ideas come from? From critics who want to tear you down, from well-meaning supporters and from people you least expect. More comes back to you. You have more to input. It enriches you.

Footloose features brilliant hit songs which will have you all dancing in the aisles, including FOOTLOOSE, HOLDING ON FOR A HERO and LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS. BUSINESS
Involving Your Employees Growth through Engagement By Gregory P. Smith program. The major difference between this and other employee involvement programs is there is a direct bottom line result. The campaign is the best way of getting hundreds of ideas from the workforce quickly.
Peter E. Drucker said, “One has to assume, first, that the individual human being at work knows better than anyone else what makes him or her more productive… even in routine work the only true expert is the person who does the job.” The Idea Campaign The Idea Campaign concept is a revolutionary way of capturing new ideas and improving employee involvement. They are a highly effective, fun, and adrenaline charged version of the traditional employee suggestion
54 I Dar Life I August 2015
Bottom-Line Results With most suggestion programs results are slow in coming and the really good ideas get screened out. On the other hand, idea campaigns take a different twist. All ideas are recognized and all participators receive instantaneous recognition. The vendor provides all materials, awards and the instructions. What people discover is that the most powerful force was not the awards. What they learned from the campaign is people become more motivated when they know someone will listen to and do something about their ideas.

Getting employees’ ideas should not be an option. If your organization is going to be competitive, it is mandatory you involve the minds, hands, and ideas of everyone in your organization. Getting employees involved not only yields valuable ideas and suggestions, but also the increased morale of workers who feel like they are being listened to results in a more productive and satisfying work environment.
The goal is to get at least one idea from everyone in the organization. For the first idea, each person receives a custom designed coffee cup. The second idea is rewarded with a writing pen. In addition, each week there is a special award ceremony to recognize everyone’s ideas. At the end of the celebration management randomly draw names from a basket for one of several prizes. Other award items like baseball caps, gold rimmed coffee mugs, books and medallions can be provided. However, the most coveted prize was a reserved parking space in front of the building.

anzania is rich with artists of all caliber ranging from those tingatinga artists we’re all come acquainted to, to those more mainstream. They all represent a Tanzania from their individual views, backgrounds and beliefs. Dar Life caught up with the newly emerging artist Kiagho who is taking a more active and vocal approach to showing his work. Mr. Kiagho Kilonzo is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, who is currently on study leave doing his Doctorate in Graphic design at the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). He is writing on Graphic design in Tanzania: Inquiry into the training of graphic designers. He pursued his Master’s degree in Art and Technology at the University of Texas at Dallas (USA) in December 2007. Prior to pursuing his Master’s degree, he obtained a Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of North Texas (USA) in December 2005, a diploma on Arts - Majoring in Fine Art in May 2000, and a certificate of Fine Art in April 1997, from the Bagamoyo College of Arts, which is currently Taasisi ya Sanaa na Utamaduni Bagamoyo (Tanzania). 56 I Dar Life I August 2015
Mr. Kilonzo is currently the President of Tanzanian National Committee of the International Association for Arts (IAA), the Deputy Director of East Africa Art Biennale, the Creative Director of Chapchap Company Limited, and the Executive Director of K2K Productions. Mr. Kilonzo has received a fantastic award of SIDA/SAREC sponsorship on his ongoing PHD program. DL - What inspired you to start painting? Kiagho - I was just talented in art since when I was born. DL - How long have you been an artist / When did you start? Kiagho - All my life, but seriously about 14 years ago when I joined Bagamoyo College of Arts in 1997. DL - Wow, seems your work has been extensive. Have you done anything that sticks out? Kiagho - The first President of Tanzania the late Mwl. Julius K. Nyerere signed on his portrait that I sketched when I was Twelve (12) years old; I won a second price in drawing completion prepared by a 1993 week of NENDA KWA USALAMA in Morogoro region. DL - What is your genre of painting and what mediums do you like to use? Kiagho - I mostly do realism and few abstracts with oil colors on canvas, and few abstracts DL - Tell us about your first exhibition? When was it? Kiagho - My seriously first exhibition was just a display of my collections that I did as class projects towards the completion of my first degree in the United States in the year 2005. DL - Where do you do your work? Kiagho - At my working place (Department of Fine and Performing Arts – University of Dar es Salaam)

DL - Do you work from life, or from photographs or from imagination? Kiagho - I work from LIFE, PHOTOGRAPHS, and IMAGINATION DL - Where do you feel art is going? Kiagho - I think art is growing especially in Tanzania where more art centers and schools are open and let artists acquire some art education. The artists become more professionals through workshops, seminars, attending international exhibitions, etc. DL - What is the role of the artist in society? Kiagho - I think the major role of the artist is to communicate his ideas to the society. DL - What is the place of your work in society? Kiagho - Just as many other artists I use my art to communicate my feelings to the surrounding societies. DL - Which is more important to you, the subject of your painting, or the way it is executed? Kiagho - Both, the subject of my

painting and the way it is executed are important to me. The subject is important because I usually have something in mind that I need to communicate; and the way it is executed is also important because I wish to communicate properly and clearly what is in my mind. DL - Do you prefer a perfect smooth technique or a more energetic expressive technique and why? Kiagho - I prefer a perfect smooth technique because it makes my art work easy to comprehend. I believe a good work of art is the one which is technical but easy to comprehend. DL - Why is your work so pretty! What do you think makes it stand out? Kiagho - I usually try to make my art work say something. The way I do that is trying to catch my figures in the mid of doing something. Such technique creates questions to the audience like, “What was the figure trying to say?”, “What is he/she trying to do?”, or “What is behind the scene?” etc. To purchase any of my paintings and other exhibition queries please contact Shama Jaffer M: +255 (0)714 444 567

Cruciferous Vegetables
(broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, cauliflower) - Phytochemicals found in this class of vegetables, namely sulforaphane and indoles are among the most potent naturally occurring anti-breast cancer agents ever identified. It’s best to eat cruciferous vegetables raw or lightly cooked, as their phytochemicals can be destroyed by heat.

Oily fish are loaded with the superstar omega 3 fats and the only food that naturally contains significant amounts of vitamin D. Vitamin D plays a critical role in breast cancer protection and deficiencies are quite common. You can now get Wild Alaskan Salmon in single serving, convenient shelf-stable vacuum sealed packets. The Ever-Evolving World of Wellness How to Optimize Physical & Mental Health? By John Sadly
“As we head through the middle of the year, the stress is starting to accumulate. August is a great time to take stock of our stress levels and take the necessary steps to get us through the rest of the year feeling and looking good.” Here are a few trends to look out for: Fierce Fitness – Coupled with a new culture where people rush from work to join their running club or boot camp, competitions like triathlons and popular high-intensity interval programmes are adding fierceness to fitness. This trend is being led by people who take fitness seriously, but fierce fitness is lots of fun and often becomes sociable through group training for cycling, swimming, dancing or running.
62 I Dar Life I August 2015
Mindful Living – With today’s supercharged world, people need a reboot for their mind. Mindfulness gives us the tools to cope with today’s highly stressed-out world. The benefits of spa and wellness activities have long been known to reduce stress and relax us, but going forward there will be a greater focus on bringing mindfulness techniques into our lives to help us reach a new place of serenity and calmness.

Woooooaaaaaaahhhhh!!!!!
Mom and elder brother were helpless - their ineffective prods and prompts eventually subsided and they could do nothing but stand and await the inevitable. We departed in order to give them their privacy, and we returned a few hours later to find the calf dead. Upon examination, we determined that whatever killed him had acted quickly, as he showed no signs of emaciation or injury. In my younger years, I would have been emotionally impervious to this event, given my preference for clinical scientific explanations and my disdain for anthropomorphism (ascribing human emotion to animals). Yet age has “softened” me, and I challenge anyone to witness such an event and the concomitant behaviour displayed by the other members of the family and NOT recognise similarities with our own kind. By the afternoon, the calf’s mom and brother had still not left his side.

carcass, sniff and prod it, and then return to feeding on a nearby bush after getting no response. They were joined just before sunset by three teenage bulls who also tried their best to rouse the calf, using their trunks to sniff, prod, and fiddle with the ears, and using their feet to gently nudge it. It was only a matter of time before the lions or the hyenas discovered the carcass. During the night, we heard the lions roaring
Early the next morning, the elephants’ mourning continued. They had still not left the calf’s side, but the resident prides were fast approaching. The outraged cow and brother would race at the lions as they inched forward, sneaking closer to utilise the bounty. The lions in turn would growl and disappointingly retreat, recognizing their inferiority in terms of size. The cubs were visibly distressed by the

y first two weeks in Ruaha have been an emotional rollercoaster ride, ranging the gamut from deep sorrow to unadulterated exuberance. As I write this piece, I am sitting under my favourite sausage tree at The Glade along the Mwagusi River. I always find it inspirational to sit in an “outside office” while doing administrative work. Every day we get going in the very early morning. It’s the most beautiful time of day with the breathtaking dawn seeming to invent brilliant new colors on a daily basis. One early morning we found an elephant cow and two of her offspring, and we noticed that the youngest was lying with his front legs collapsed. Gauging by the calf’s position, we could surmise that his condition was terminal although he was still breathing. The whites of his eyes were clearly visible, and panic seemed to be flowing through them.
Marius Swart is a member of Clearly Africa Guided Safaris. He wrote this story during his rotational duties as Manager and Field Guide at Kwihala Camp in Ruaha National Park, one of the Adventure Camps properties in Tanzania’s southern wilderness. impedance to their mealtime. Patience would pay off though... For over 24 hours, the mom and her older son stayed with the carcass keeping the scavengers at bay. Finally they seemed to accept that the mourning period was over, and retreated just enough to allow the starving cubs access to the muchneeded sustenance. Once we, along with the calf’s mother and brother, accepted his departure from this world, we felt more comfortable witnessing the nutrient-cycle in action as we watched the lions tuck in. Forty-eight hours after the death of the calf, the same group of three males accompanied the mom and her last remaining offspring as they appeared over the ridge and made their way
towards where the lions were devouring the last scraps of the carcass. We sat in anticipation while they determinedly ambled straight to the exact spot where the calf died, paying no attention to the place where the male lion had dragged the remains. They milled around a bit and rumbled, went quiet and then turned as one, walking off into the shrub without so much as another glance back. In Ruaha, we have also been privileged to bear witness to the climatic cycle in its orbit. The past few weeks have become increasingly hot and humid, making for very uncomfortable days and nights. Building morning clouds and midday windy gusts have brought nothing but disappointment as they fade away into dusty sunsets. The usual bush-fires were raging above the escarpment for a week or so before eventually dying out just short of the Mwagusi River. Our emotions seesaw with the ebb and flow of the clouds. Three days ago, we saw rain pouring from clouds to the East, which is the direction we often get rain from. It was hard to contain our excitement. By late afternoon, the clouds had progressed all the way to the park, and we could smell the rain on the wind! I was at The Glade when the first drops fell! I elatedly stopped the vehicle I was driving, got out and just stood there with my face turned to the storm - what an incredible feeling! At first the drops came slowly, but with increasing rhythmic percussive blows displacing dust puffs into the air until eventually there was no more dust...just mud! Drenched to the bone, I walked in the rain to the nearest puddle of mud and buried my bare feet as deep as I could. Just five minutes before everything had been crying out for water. An involuntary smile came from within and erupted into exuberant laughter at the amazing experience. The advent of the rainy season
brought with it the accompanying bounty. Scorpions were out en force that night with at least fifteen making their way into my tent, and a few hundred surrounding it outside. (Those that have been here in the emerald season will know that is no exaggeration!) Yesterday and today have already seen the appearance of a flush of new grass vigorously pushing its way up through the barren soil, forming an amazing carpet of green. The impala, as if one, have started lambing, and newborns are springing up everywhere. Overnight the buffalo herd has disappeared from sight, and we assume they have already made their way up and over the escarpment to exploit the Miombo section of the park. There they will spend most of the green season, only to return at the start of the dry season next year, around July or August. It was brilliant having had the privilege to see them on a daily basis for these past two months, and I will definitely miss them. Experiencing such a spectrum of powerful feelings in a short period is rather overwhelming and almost exhausting. However, after having had some time to ruminate and digest it a little, I have come to the conclusion that this is exactly what life is about, at least for me. Imagine waking everyday knowing that today there will be no peaks or troughs, just one even matrix. There was a time where that was preferable, but now I prefer to give myself over to the “sharper teeth of existence” if I may quote a friend of mine. There would be nothing worse than being gummed to death by life.... May you experience the “sharper teeth of existence” and revel in being alive. Yours in Nature.

BOOK REVIEWS
Coffee break Join Dar Life reviews editor for the pick of the books with an East African flavour By A Novel Idea
Go Set a Watchman - by Harper Lee
The publication of a newly discovered novel, the earliest known work from Harper Lee, the beloved, bestselling author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, To Kill a Mockingbird. Originally written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman was the novel Harper Lee first submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird. Assumed to have been lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014. Go Set a Watchman features many of the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird some twenty years later. Returning home to Maycomb to visit her father, Jean Louise Finch—Scout—struggles with issues both personal and political, involving Atticus, society, and the small Alabama town that shaped her. Exploring how the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird are adjusting to the turbulent events transforming mid-1950s America, Go Set a Watchman casts a fascinating new light on Harper Lee’s enduring classic. Moving, funny and compelling, it stands as a magnificent novel in its own right.
The Black Mzungu - by Alexandria Osborne
When Alexandria “Nur” Osborne applied for a six-month fellowship to Tanzania, never did she imagine that six months would turn into a lifetime; and that the bush of East Africa would teach her about love, about identity, and about courage. This vivid book - The Black Mzungu - is the candid account of how Nur, an African American Muslim woman, and Saidi, her Tanzanian husband whom she meets during the fellowship, build a new life together. Breathing life into a beautiful 92-acre homestead vacated four decades earlier by Saidi’s family, Nur and Saidi learn to live among the dangers of the land’s wildlife, and the people that often view them as outsiders. There on the coastal southern region of Lindi, Tanzania, they learn to overcome man-made and natural obstacles, often challenging Nur’s perceptions of how things “ought” to be. And as they triumph in their personal successes, they find a way to give back to the land they call home.
The Blandings Castle Book Series - by P.G Wodehouse
Blandings Castle, a place like no other, is the setting for this laugh-out-loud series that follows the trials and tribulations of poor Lord Emsworth and his beloved pig Empress as they come head to head with his dysfunctional family and friends. Blandings Castle is a recurring fictional location in the stories of British comic writer P. G. Wodehouse, being the seat of Lord Emsworth (Clarence Threepwood, 9th Earl of Emsworth), home to many of his family, and setting for numerous tales and adventures written between 1915 and 1975. The series of stories which take place at the castle, in its environs and involving its denizens have come to be known as the “Blandings Books”, or indeed, in a phrase used by Wodehouse in his preface to the 1969 reprint of the first book, the “Blandings Castle Saga”.

WILD LIFE
Explore Ruaha Beasts, Birds, Baobabs & Beauty
“With its harsh and rocky landscape, no other park in Tanzania epitomises the definition of “wild Africa” quite like Ruaha National Park. After the annexation of two other major conservation areas, Ruaha is now the largest national park in Tanzania, covering a vast area of 23,000 square kilometres (substantially larger than Wales!). While few are familiar with the park, national park connoisseurs recognize it as one of the most spectacular in Africa.“ 80 I Dar Life I August 2015

National Park By Beatrice Maro

or anyone seeking a true African wilderness experience, a visit to Ruaha National Park is essential. One of Tanzania’s wildest parks, Ruaha can only be described as a true, unspoiled, natural wilderness. Because of its distance from any major city, very few tourists visit the park each year. Yet those who do are treated to unsurpassable wilderness and complete isolation. Ruahas’ greatest secret lies in its extraordinary diversity of animals, plants and birds. Located in south-western Tanzania, Ruaha sprawls within and along an ancient arm of the Great Rift Valley, covering a unique transition zone where the eastern and southern species of both fauna and flora meet against a dramatic topographical background. Because of its location on the rift and surrounding geological formations, Ruaha is extremely diverse, with access to several different habitat types. The vast majority of the park above the escarpment termed “Miombo
Woodland” is rarely visited by tourists, as it is relatively difficult to reach and known for challenging game viewing and an abundance of tse-tse flies. The scenery in Miombo is quite dramatic, with tall Brachysteiga trees forming continuous woodland housing for some specialist species of antelope, such as the magnificent sable, as well as several miombo-specializing birds. The low-altitude Ruaha Valley is the more developed section of the park, which covers little more than a third of the park’s total size. The Ruaha Valley has a decent road network for game viewing and a variety of vegetation types, thus offering a diverse game drive experience without the annoyance of tsetse flies. The Great Ruaha River, which is known as the park’s lifeline, attracts big herds of animals of all shapes and sizes and flows right through the Ruaha Valley. Some of Ruahas’ best features are found in the valley, from massive rocky hills and outcrops to dense, impenetrable bush and open grasslands in the east. The most striking features are numerous serpentine dry “sand rivers”, which crisscross the August 2015 I Dar Life I 81
park and are lined with dense vegetation, where many animals take refuge. Birding in Ruaha National Park For birdwatchers, Ruaha’s birdlife is sure to please. There are a recorded 530 different species of birds in the park, including giant herons, saddlebilled storks, white-headed plovers and white-backed night herons. There are six species of both vultures and hornbills, and raptors abound. The crested barbet, an attractive yellowand-black bird whose persistent trilling is a characteristic sound of the southern bush, can also be found in Ruaha alongside central Tanzanian endemics such as the yellow-collared lovebird and ashy starling. The park’s birds make their home among the branches of Ruaha’s 1600 species of trees, which is 82 I Dar Life I August 2015
twice as many as the number of species in the great Selous Game Reserve, although Ruaha is only half the size of Selous. Wildlife in Ruaha National Park Only two words can define the wildlife at Ruaha National Park: wild and beautiful. The park holds an incredible array of animals. Among Tanzanian parks, Ruaha possesses one of the highest species counts of large mammals. The park holds an estimated 20,000 elephants alone, and it is not uncommon in the dry season to see well over 100 elephants in a single drive. Hippos rule the river, and vast quantities of these animals can also be seen sunning themselves along the stunning river sandbanks in the early morning. Massive herds of buffalo, with up to 500 animals plus seen in
a single herd, coexist alongside giraffes, zebras, impalas, elands, crocodiles, lions and leopards. Ruaha is also home to some very rare creatures. Sable antelope can occasionally be found in the Miombo areas as well as in the springs in the western part of the park. Roan antelope are also sometimes seen in the eastern area of the park. Lesser kudus and grants gazelle are intermittently spotted at the southernmost point of their geographical range. Dikdiks abound all over the park, and rarely does a drive return without having glimpsed the noble greater kudu. Ruaha is also home to the second largest population of wild dog in Africa. As the majority of the park’s wild dogs live in the inaccessible wilderness areas of the north, only a few lucky visitors spot them.

Why visit Ruaha National Park? Untouched, Pristine Nature: Ruaha is one of the less frequented national parks in Tanzania, which means that the park’s wildlife has hardly been altered by human intervention. Personalized Wildlife Watching: Because Ruaha is expanding in size yearly, the chances of bumping into other vehicles that can startle an animal you may be already watching are limited. Lots to Discover: In areas where park authorities have formal tracks, there are no access restrictions, which allows visitors a great deal of freedom to explore undiscovered territory. Currently,
Tanzanian park authorities are adding more routes while carefully monitoring the ecological impact, thus ascertaining that the wildlife remains as undisturbed as possible. There are plans to add up to 1500 kilometers of road networks. Go by Foot: Ruaha is one of the few national parks in Tanzania where walking safari is permitted when accompanied by an armed ranger. This liberty gives nature enthusiasts an opportunity to receive an up-close and personal experience with wildlife in dense places where safari vehicles cannot penetrate. Getting to Ruaha National Park There are two ways guests can
reach Ruaha National Park. One is by road, through Iringa from Dar es Salaam via Mikumi, or from Arusha via Dodoma. Ruaha is also accessible by plane. Scheduled charter flights are available from Dar es Salaam, Selous, Serengeti, Arusha, Iringa and Mbeya through companies such as Safari Air Link, Flight Link and Coastal Aviation. When to go To see predators and large mammals, dry season (mid-May to December); to see birds, lush scenery and wildflowers, wet season (January to April). The male greater kudu is most visible in June, which is the breeding season. Where to stay Ruaha River Lodge occupies a unique and privileged position, set around a series of August 2015 I Dar Life I 83
rocky kopjes in a bend of the Great Ruaha River. It offers guests the opportunity to have their own riverside cottage designed to blend seamlessly into the surroundings. The lodge extends along the rocky shores of the Great Ruaha River, affording views up and down the river. Game animals are drawn to the river from the neighbouring hills, and guests can see great wildlife dramas unfold from the comfort and protection of their selfcontained natural stone and thatch ‘cottage’. 84 I Dar Life I August 2015
Mdonya Old River Camp is nestled in the curving banks of a sand-river. The tents are comfortably furnished with double or twin beds and have large verandas where one can relax and observe the surrounding wildlife. Mwagusi Safari Camp is located on the banks of Mwagusi Sand River. Nature Experience at Ruaha River Lodge Game drives are the predominant activity in Ruaha National Park. The park has a vast network of all-weather roads, so large tracts of the park are accessible to visitors. Not only does this increase the chance of seeing more animals, it also disperses the vehicles more evenly around the park so that you will not meet many other vehicles on your safari. The highly trained, English-speaking guides will lead you to an abundance
extensive local knowledge whilst living and working in the park. This ensures you don’t miss out on the flora and fauna that normally go unnoticed by the untrained eye.
fly-camping excursions, which allow you to spend two nights camping in the wilderness. To take advantage of this special opportunity, pre- booking is required.
Game drives are generally taken in open, adapted 4WD vehicles. The vehicles have tiered seating and roof shading. The camp has two types of vehicles – a Maruti jeep for a maximum of six people, and an extended Landrover-style vehicle with three rows of seats for a maximum of nine people.
“Ruaha River Lodge offers comfortable lodge accommodation and a range of activities for a true Safari experience.”
Accomodation The 24 individual stone and thatch rooms situated along the Ruaha River have

Game viewing is shared unless a private vehicle is reserved. For a more intimate experience, guided game walks are offered during the dry season (May to November). Ruaha River Lodge also offers
minimal impact on the environment and allow guests to view widlife directly from their verandas. The lodge’s dining and bar areas also overlook the Great Ruaha River, which means that you don’t need August 2015 I Dar Life I 93
Culinary and Dining Experience At Ruaha River Lodge Food is prepared using fresh produce from the Fox family’s Highland farm. A full English breakfast is complimented by freshly baked cinnamon bread, fresh fruit, tea and coffee.

Lunch is a cold buffet with a selection of meats, pastries, pizzas and salads, followed by dessert. Dinner is a three-course meal with a vegetarian option. Special diets can be catered for with prior notification. Tea and coffee is served after each meal and is available complimentary throughout the day. Drinks are served around a campfire on the riverbank or high up in the elevated bar with its spectacular views up and down the river. Getting there Safari Air Link operates daily flights to Ruaha from Dar and Zanzibar. These flights also connect with Selous, Mikumi and the Southern Highlands, and connect through to Katavi and Mahale. By road, Ruaha is a 2 hour drive from Iringa Town. Road transfers from
Iringa can be arranged with your booking. Keep in mind that the park gates close at 6:30pm. Best Time to Visit Ruaha National Park can be visited at any time of year. However, the best time for game viewing is during the dry season from June until December, when wildlife converges on the dwindling water reserves and concentrates along the great Ruaha River, which is the park’s only permanent water source. During the ‘rains’ from late December until April, the trees sprout green leaves and the Ruaha River swells into a bursting torrent. Although game viewing becomes more difficult during this period due to lush vegetation, there is no major migration of game away from the park as happens in the north of Tanzania, so chances are high that visitors will still meet with significant wildlife. The rainy season is the best time for birdwatching, as the population of birds swells with both the northern and southern migratory species visiting Ruaha. For more information or to make reservations, please call +255 754 237422 or email fox@tanzaniasafaris.info.

to interrupt your game viewing while you eat and drink. Single, double, and triple cottages are available. Extra beds can be added on request. All rooms have a lounge area with sofa and armchair, coffee table, and writing desk. Rooms also have mosquito-proof doors and windows, though bug spray is also provided. Electricity is provided by a generator with 24V UK-style three-pin sockets. Hurricane lamps are provided at dusk. Complimentary laundry service is also available.
