A Feast of Film, Music & V EA films dominate ZIFF 2016 awards By Lara Preston

U

nder the beautiful Zanzibar skies, some of the best films from across the globe received awards at Zanzibar International Film Festival 2016. ZIFF 2016 included film screenings and special events enjoyed by over 60 visiting filmmakers alongside hundreds of invited guests and thousands of Zanzibaris and visitors.

“For the first time, East African films dominated the awards, with Rwanda’s “A Place for Myself ” by Clementine Dusabejambo winning the Sembene Ousmane Award, the Signis Prize, and the Golden Dhow Award for Best Short Film.” The film tells the story of a five-year old albino girl whose classmates make her feel that “her being different” is more a problem than a special trait. Others in the neighbourhood treat her likewise, with the exception of her mother, who encourages her. Together, mother and daughter fight back and raise their voice to find “a place for themselves”. Kenya’s “Watatu” by Nick Reding received the coveted Golden Dhow for Best Feature Film, the Signis Prize, and the European African Film Festival Award, shared with another Kenyan film, “Zawadi” by Richard Card and David Kinyanjui. Reding’s film examines the rise of radicalization amongst young Muslims in Mombasa. It is part drama, part documentary, and written in part by the citizens of Mombasa. The short film “Zawadi” tells the story of a ten-year-old boy in the Kenyan slums of Kibera whose hustle to provide for his family takes him away from his crush on her birthday. The Emerson’s Foundation for Zanzibar Award went to “Daladala” by Salum Stika. This film shows how the people of the Isles depend on the local private transport system, despite being subjected to indignities and even ridicule at times. 12 I Dar Life I August 2016

Visual Arts “Two new categories were introduced this year. The first was the Azam Bongo Movie Awards. Azam gave the Best Actress Award to Godliver Gordian, for her role in “Aisha”. This feature drama also received Azam’s award for Best Editor (Momose Cheyo) and Best Feature Film Producer (Amil Shivji). Best Cinematographer went to Freddy Feruzi for “Kariakoo”.”

In the ZIFF Awards, the Silver Dhow for the Best Documentary went to “The Valley of Salt” by Salaud Morisset from Switzerland and Egypt. Best Film went to “Leeches” by Payal Sethi from India. The Special Jury Prize went to “Me a Belgian, My Mother a Ghanaian” by Adams Mensah from Belgium. The Bibi Kidude Award went to “Kalushi” by Mandlakayise Dube from South Africa and the Best Music Video for “Walk it Off ” went to Farid Kubanda, who is better known as Fid-Q. As has been the custom before the screening of the winning film, the theme and dates for next year’s 20th anniversary edition – “Finding Joy” from July 8 to 16 was announced.

The other new category was the Com Net Bongo Movie Awards. They gave Best Actor to Salim Ahmed for his role in “Safari ya Gwalu”, Best Writer to Abubakar Guni and Devotha Mayunga for their “Queen of Masai”, while Best Director went to Chande Omar for “Aisha” and Best Film in Sound went to “Bongo na Flava” by Joseph Myinga.

Prime Minister Visits Tanzania Deepening Economic Ties Between Africa & India By John Kinga

“Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Tanzania was a powerful symbol of a growing relationship between the two countries. Mr. Modi, who landed in the country along with a delegation of 50 Indian investors, came to discuss the potential for collaboration between Tanzania and India.”

I

ndian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi arrived in Dar es Salaam on July 9 and was received a ceremonial welcome at the State House. A huge crowd thronged to welcome him, with children waving Indian and Tanzanian flags. Upon arriving at the State House, Modi joined Tanzanian President John Pombe Joseph Magufuli to play traditional Tanzania drums at a colorful ceremony. Earlier, he received a 21-gun salute from members of the uniformed forces before inspecting a guard of honor. 22 I Dar Life I August 2016

Looking forward to building a 21st century partnership with Tanzania, Prime Minister Modi offered to share with the African nation India's experiences, expertise and capacity in a range of areas as a "reliable friend".” Addressing a banquet hosted in his honour by President Magufuli, he said, "India has been, and will always be, a trusted partner" in the developmental journey of Tanzania. "In recent years, our ties of commerce, links of trade and investments, and development cooperation have flourished. If today, India has emerged as the world's fastest growing large economy, then Tanzania is one of the most important economies on this continent," PM Modi said. During the visit, he extended India’s full support to Tanzania to meet its development needs and signed five agreements, including one for providing a line of credit of $92 million in the water resources sector. “India is willing to consider an additional $500 million line of concessional credit,” the Indian

premier said at a joint press conference with his host, President John Magufuli, at the State House in Dar es Salaam.

President Magufuli and I agreed to deepen India-Tanzania ties in agriculture, food security, trade, natural gas and other vital sectors," Modi said after the two leaders had led bilateral relations talks between the two countries.” Analysts said Modi is on a charm offensive in Africa to promote his country and offset Chinese influence on the continent. India is seen as trying to play catch-up to its fellow Asian giant China in terms of economic, trade and diplomatic ties with African countries. Meanwhile, Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa welcomed Indian businessmen to invest in Tanzania in various attractive sectors including commercial farming and manufacturing. The premier made the remarks during an investment symposium between businessmen from the two countries held in the city. PM Majaliwa told delegates to the symposium that “Tanzania has investment opportunities in various sectors including infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, industries, and mining.” 24 I Dar Life I August 2016

Over 50 potential investors from India accompanied the country’s Prime Minister Modi on his one-day visit to Tanzania where various investment-related issues were discussed and experiences shared with members of the local business community.” During his visit, PM Modi also met ‘Solar Mamas’, a group of rural female solar engineers from Africa who have been trained under Government of India-supported programmes to fabricate, install, use, repair and maintain solar lanterns and household solar lighting systems in their villages. PM Modi also interacted with members of the Indian community, which numbers around 50,000 in Tanzania. The Indian Prime Minister’s visit to Tanzania was the third leg of his four-nation tour of Africa aimed at enhancing ties with the continent, particularly in the economic sphere. He also visited Mozambique and South Africa before arriving in Dar es Salaam, and traveled on to Kenya after leaving Tanzania. The focus of his tour was deepening cooperation in areas of hydrocarbons, maritime security, trade and investment, agriculture and food.

The night finished with lots of dancing and fun under a glittering light show provided by Blue Banana and DJ B. Rad. But let us not forget the reason that the Rotary Club Zanzibar, Stone Town went to the effort of hosting such a wonderful event. The club has enjoyed a long an excellent relationship with a UK based charity HIPZ,

who together with the Ministry of Health operate the second and third largest hospitals on Unguja. HIPZ identified a long list of life saving and life enhancing equipment they urgently require. Further, the hospital is in need of basic supplies and structural renovation. A large proportion of the funds raised has already been allocated to HIPZ to procure equipment. As Rotary is an international organization, the club in Zanzibar plans to use the remaining funds in partnership with other clubs overseas to make a matching fund grant proposal for a much larger, significant and sustainable project to make a difference to the operation of the hospital in Makanduchi and bring significant aid to the 100,000 people who use its services. The Principal Secretary of Health Dr Juma Akil, who attended the event with his beautiful daughter, graciously acknowledged the work and contributions of both HIPZ and The Rotary Club of Zanzibar. Such a huge sum of money could not have been raised without the generous support of the various sponsors who supported the event, especially Fumba Town Development – it is fitting that a Zanzibar charity supporting a Zanzibar hospital secured such a fine Zanzibar sponsor.

On behalf of the Government, I take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude for your kind reception during the golf fundraising day. I also acknowledge the efforts made by Rotary and other sponsors for a well-organized event. We believe the amount of money collected will serve the purpose of supporting delivery of better health services in Makunduchi Hospital, as it does in Kivunge.” -Dr. Juma Akil, Principle Secretary, Ministry of Health, Zanzibar Fumba Town Development is committed to providing ethically built, affordable urban housing in Zanzibar while creating a sustainable infrastructure and attractive environment. They are pioneering bringing housing and living on Zanzibar into the 21st Century. Significant donations and sponsorship by AETNA, MIC Global Risks, Zanlink, EN-Projects and Alliance Autos also made this day possible. The Rotary Club of Zanzibar, Stone Town is excited to announce that next year’s Golf Day will take place on Saturday, the 1st of July 2017. Tanzania Centre for Cultural Heritage Culture is rooted in people; People who are beautiful and create art; Art that not only pleases the eye, But stays with the Soul Forever. Experience the heritage of Tanzania in TCCH, where you find Tanzania has lot more to it than wildlife & Mt. Kilimanjaro. Ujamma or ‘Tree of Life’, one of the finest examples of Makonde Art form, is an elaborately carved sculpture crafted on a single piece of ebony wood. This particular carving is exclusive to Tanzania, and illustrates the every-day family life of Tanzanians, in the most artistically expressive way.

T

anzania has a lot to offer when it comes to Art; for instance, the age-old handcrafted African Masks that were used for various ceremonies, or the famous Tinga Tinga Paintings that were first created in 1968 by late Mr. Edward Tinga Tinga, or the beautifully carved Zanzibar Chests, which find its origin in a number of influences, ranging from Asia to Arabia, with a tad of European touch. Adding to that, Masai Bead Art is a whole new genre of art form, which has attracted tourists in large numbers since a long time.

It’s certain that Tanzania has a very rich history of cultural heritage. However, when one plans a trip to Tanzania, it’s mostly to visit the renowned Game Parks, like Serengeti or Ngorongoro or Selous Game Reserve. Most of the African artifacts are then bought at the souvenir stores, either within the premises of the resorts or inside the Game Parks. What the tourists miss here, is the local atmosphere and feel of real Tanzania. Inaugurated by Hon. Prof. Elisante Ole Gabriel, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Arts, Culture & Sports, “the main focus of our store is on local art craft, and artists. We desire to give a platform to these craftsmen and sculptors to showcase their work in an organized environment to every tourist visiting Tanzania.”

In this bargain, the artisans and craftsmen have the most to lose, as they are unable to find proper markets to sell their products and receive their due. One is thus led to wonder if Tanzania’s local art and craft can ever truly come to the forefront. 44 I Dar Life I August 2016

Tanzania Centre for Cultural Heritage (TCCH) is the first ‘Organized Artifact Store’ in Tanzania, TCCH has pledged to concentrate their energies on promoting the artists’ creations from the remotest parts of Tanzania. T

he Oryx Rally of Tanzania is a two-day rally that serves as the fourth round of this year’s ARC. The race promised a rare treat for spectators, considering Bagamoyo’s challenging routes. A total of 25 cars with drivers from Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the host country Tanzania started from Southern Sun Hotel, the official Rally headquarters. The Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Nape Nnauye, President of AA Tanzania, Nizar Jivani, and Oryx Energies MD, Godfrey Fernandez flagged off this year’s edition of Oryx Energies Tanzania Rally in a colorful ceremony at the hotel.

Randeep Birdi defied all odds to win the competition. The Dar es Salaam Motor Sports Club driver, who is navigated by Zubayr Peredina in his Mitsubishi Evolution nine, comfortably cruised to the finish line at Southern Sun Hotel and took his valuable prize for the upcoming motorsport season.” Another fast-running driver on the domestic front, Jamil Kahn, who represents Dar es Salaam Motor Sports Club, DMSC, finished runners-up in the Oryx Energies Rally, thanks to heroics from experienced navigator, Mysam Fazal. The duo improved from thirdplaced at the end of the opening leg staged on Saturday, then made a powerful flat-out to ease past Miller in their Mitsubishi Evolution 10 car. The young men pushed Miller to the third place as national championship title holder Dharam Pandya, recovered quickly to finish fourth overall, having trailed to sixth on the opening day. Ugandan Christakis Fitidis, who was navigated by Eric Nzamwita in their Mitsubishi Evolution car, took the lead among the foreigners after notching a fifth-place finish at the end of the final leg. Kilimanjaro Motor Sports Club’s unheralded driver Ajmindersingh Dhani, stunned even his experienced brothers from their respectable Hari Singh Rally Team to finish as sixth placed driver. Ajmindersing deployed navigation services of Kenyan Absalom Aswani as the first driver using Subaru in the event to finish among the top ten line-up.

Twelve cars out of 25 managed to finish the tough 500km rally that thrilled most of the Bagamoyo and Chalinze fans for two consecutive days.”

Singh did not finish the first leg and he was trailing Smith in the ARC title chase with 25 points. Smith is the winner of the ARC version and is on top of standings while opening a massive 36-point gap after the Oryx Energies Rally. The always bold Tanzanian Pan-African designer, Mustafa Hassanali, recently launched his ‘Sand-sational Saadani‘ collection, inspired by the fascinating setting of beach meets bush, at South Africa Menswear Week in Cape Town. This marked his 14th showcase in South Africa. “

52 I Dar Life I August 2016

aadani is the only park in East Africa with an Indian Ocean beachfront and the one place where those idle hours of sunbathing might be interrupted by an elephant strolling past, or animals coming to drink at the nearby waterhole.

S

The whole idea of paradise in a jungle evokes emotions of tranquility, serenity woven with the wildness and free spiritedness. These feelings seep through Hassanali’s spring/summer collection, which includes colorful khanga inspired by the flora and fauna and wildlife found in the Saadani jungle. The breezy cotton organdy and knits reflect the sandy beaches of Saadani. The opportunity to walk for miles along deserted beaches does not present itself very often, and this is part of the allure of Saadani.

‘Sand-sational Saadani’ is for you to let loose and live up yours days after a tiring day in the concrete jungle. So toast to all the memories and make more, fill your cups and dance like no one’s watching. Because at the end of your day, your feet should be dirty, your hair messy, eyes sparkling and your feelings gone wild. Mustafa’s Sand-sational Saadani collection was proudly sponsored by South African Airways, celebrating 20 consecutive years of the best services and 361 degrees. August 2016 I Dar Life I 53

Mustafa Hassanali’s creative genius is on full display in this collection. His passion for fashion creates looks and silhouettes that play around with a bit of both sides of Saadani: The brightly coloured shirts and shorts and sheer pants and cover-ups reflect the wilder side, while his toned-down jackets and Kaunda suits represent the serene, calmer side.”

CAREER

Why Can’t I Find a Job? By Frank Traditi

“If you earned a dollar each time you asked yourself that question, your money problems would disappear, right? Successful job seekers refuse to ask that dreaded question of themselves or others. Instead, they consistently employ four key principles throughout every job search.”

The Four Key Principles of Successful Job Seekers 1. Use job search strategies that work. Two of the biggest challenges job-seekers face are knowing which job search approaches are the most effective, and figuring out where to start in finding job opportunities. Successful job-seekers know that any approach that helps them find and connect with the right people will eventually land them the job they want. Answering want ads and Internet postings are a waste of time. Developing relationships through networking, referrals, informational interviewing, and recruiters gets them closer to, if not right on top of, their ideal job 2. Stick to a step-by-step, action-oriented process. There are million things to do, places to look, and people to talk to, but they don›t have a system for putting the pieces together. Job-seekers who know the score, design and implement a game plan that includes setting a specific and attainable goal, actions steps to take every day or week, and a system to track their progress. If they don›t realize the results they want to achieve, they 54 I Dar Life I August 2016

don›t abandon this plan. Rather, they make adjustments that get them back on track. 3. Stay motivated in face of frustration and rejection. Most people get frustrated and angry with this every-day occurrence and give up. The successful job-seeker sees this as opportunity or a positive learning experience. They don’t let the fear of rejection get in the way of their progress. By sticking to their plan, they don’t give up during the job search. They are motivated by the goals they’ve set and nothing will deter them from that accomplishment. 4. Know when to ask for help. Conversely, successful job-seekers know that they cannot do this alone. They stack the odds in their favor by adding some outside help to their job search campaign. They want to be accountable to someone other than themselves. They need to get a different point of view, or perspective, on their progress or challenges. And, they seek out support from people who care about their progress or help them develop the tools they need to win. The next time you ask yourself or someone else, “why can’t I find a job?” you now know all is not lost. Implementing a solid action plan, sticking to your goals, and seeking help when you need it most, puts you in charge of your destiny. Simply put, you are just a few steps away from being a success.

E

ach principle is critical on its own. But to successfully land the job they want, they know that each one interacts with and supports the other.

The Importance of Diversity Training for Your Customer Service Staff By Jane Blanchard

T

he importance of diversity training being fostered within your employees helps to develop better and more understanding staff members while it also facilitates the efforts to increase revenue, expand the client base, and improve the workplace environment for everyone involves. The following details 5 core principles that develop diversity skills within your customer service employees:

Each of the above diversity training principles will guide your customer service staff to higher levels of customer satisfaction while improving the overall environment in the workplace. Customers crave the spotlight and rightly so as they keep your businesses running. Everyone wants to be treated fairly, with respect and compassion – the simplest way to ingrain this in your employees is to remind them to think about how they would want to be treated as a customer. 58 I Dar Life I August 2016

All Picture Courtesy of John Kinga

Today, we live in a world where borders and boundaries are only relevant for geographic interpretations. There are multitudes of International corporations whose customer service staff is constantly dealing with the many diverse individuals from all walks of life. Whether the customer is racially, sexually, or culturally different from your customer service staff, they need to be prepared and adept at helping any and all individuals who are there seeking the products and services offered by your firm. And thus, so too must the antiquated ways and prejudices of previous generations go the way of the dinosaur.

1. Respect – showing respect for every single customer is tantamount to offering unparalleled customer service. Every customer regardless of race, language, religion, ethnicity, gender, age, and sexual orientation deserves the utmost amount of respect from each and every employee. 2. Remove all Preconceived Notions – stereotyping of an individual is not only bad for your business but could cause further harm through negative publicity and lawsuits. All employees must be thoroughly taught to let go of their previously held conventions and see each person as an individual and not pigeon-hole them based on who or what they believe them to be. 3. Be Attentive – by paying attention to the customer’s actions, voice inflections and professed needs, a customer service employee can quickly adjust their demeanor and personality to reflect what the customer wants from them in the form of personal attention. 4. Be Compassionate – your customer service staff must learn to express a positive and supportive attitude towards clients. When a customer believes the staff is genuinely concerned about their needs, it disarms them and allows for better communication and flow. The client begins to establish a sense of trust in the employee and starts to rely on and value their opinion. 5. Be the customer’s promoter – always look out for the customer’s best interest and this will also serve the best interests of the company. A greater rapport and trust will develop which will lend to higher customer satisfaction and loyalty.

The Hunger Games Series – by Suzanne Collins

The nation of Panem, formed from a post-apocalyptic North America, is a country that consists of a wealthy capitol region surrounded by 12 poorer districts. Early in its history, a rebellion led by a 13th district against the capitol resulted in its destruction and the creation of an annual televised event known as the Hunger Games. In punishment, and as a reminder of the power and grace of the capitol, each district must yield one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 through a lottery system to participate in the games. The ‘tributes’ are chosen during the annual reaping and are forced to fight to the death, leaving only one survivor to claim victory. When 16-year-old Katniss’s young sister, Prim, is selected as District 12’s female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives, some of whom have trained for this their whole lives. She sees it as a death sentence, but Katniss has been close to death before. For her, survival is second nature.

Big Little Lies - by Liane Moriarty

Roar of the Lion - by Frank Coates

Ewart Grogan, known to the Africans as Bwana Simba — the man with the cold stare of the lion, is a man of unwavering self-confidence. From his early days fighting for Cecil Rhodes in the Matabele wars, Grogan’s passion uniquely equipped him to conquer a continent. He risked all to trek across darkest Africa for the woman he loves and has gone on to dominate the business world of the burgeoning new colony of British East Africa. Domination has come at a price, however. Now, the Great War points its bloody finger towards Africa. And Grogan faces his greatest ordeal — and his most wrenching choice.

Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny and biting and passionate, and she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife Celeste have moved into her beloved beachside community, and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline’s youngest (how is this possible?). And to top it all off, Madeline’s teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline’s ex-husband over her. (How. Is. This. Possible?) Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit flustered at times, who wouldn’t be with those rambunctious twin boys? Now that the boys are starting school, Celeste and her husband look set to become the king and queen of the school parent body. But royalty often comes at a price, and Celeste is grappling with how much more she is willing to pay. New to town, single mom Jane is so young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her years and harbors secret doubts about her son. But why? While Madeline and Celeste soon take Jane under their wing, none of them realizes how the arrival of Jane and her inscrutable little boy will affect them all. Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive.

Katavi National Park

8

Only a handful of adventurous souls ever make it to Katavi. Those who do are treated to a mesmerizing experience. Tanzania’s third largest national park, Katavi is a legendary wilderness: remote, free and undisturbed. The sheer number of animals on show is mindboggling, in quantity and variety.

The sheer number of animals on show is mindboggling, in quantity and variety

Katavi is one of the few parks with the highest biodiversity in Africa. Your view changes from seasonally flooded grassland plains to the steep escarpments of the Rukwa Rift Valley. Yet the park is dominated by miombo savannah in its purest form. The large herds of antelope feel particularly at home; even the more elusive species. Katavi is one of only two parks home to both sable and roan antelope; the latter easier to spot than anywhere else. If you’re looking for the ultimate spot to tick your game-viewing boxes, head straight to the Katuma River and her floodplains, including the seasonal Lakes Katavi and Chada. Their appearance differs greatly between the wet and dry season. During the rains the grass grows up meters into the air, turning the barren grounds into seemingly endless green sheets. Waterbirds appear in abundance alongside the lakes. But it’s during the dry season that game-viewing becomes truly overwhelming. The drier it gets, the more animals find their way to Katavi’s remaining sources of drinking water.

The large herds of antelope feel particularly at home; even the more elusive species

Buffalo, elephant and zebra are the most abundant. Each population boasts thousands and thousands of individuals; herds of buffalo often triple the size one would find in the Serengeti. Add to that a great number of giraffe and other large mammals. All of them on the lookout for roaming lion prides, spotted hyena, cheetah, leopards and wild dog, excitedly working up an appetite all round them.

Katavi’s many pools boast Tanzania’s densest concentrations of hippo and crocodile Katavi’s many pools boast Tanzania’s densest concentrations of hippo and crocodile. Especially in the dry season they flop together in the last remaining puddles, leading to spectacular territorial bouts. And beware of one of the most thrilling residents of the wooded savannah: the black mamba, the most poisonous snake on the continent that grows up to a dazzling 4 metres. The remoteness means animals aren’t so used to humans and vehicles as they might be in more popular national parks. Katavi offers you a real sense of venturing into the wild, making the park even more special. Katavi National Park was established in 1974, but doubled its size in 1997 to 4,471 km2, becoming Tanzania’s third largest national park. • The Rukwa Game Reserve (4,000 km2) borders Katavi, together forming the Katavi-Rukwa eco-system. • From northwest to southeast it stretches 125 km2. • Height: in general no higher than 960 m.

• The average temperature is 22-26 °C: 24-30 °C during the day (up to 40 °C at the end of the dry season), 16-18 °C during the night. • Dry season: June – October, wet season: November – May (less rainy in January – February and the only period in the rainy season in which all park roads might be passable). • Best time to visit: May to October. • Katavi is accessible by road or air. • By road, from Dar Es Salaam to Tunduma 980 km on good tarmac road followed by 435 km to Sitalike on rough road. • By air, several companies organize private flights to either Mpanda airport or air strips at Sitalike or Ikuu inside the park.

Katavi offers you a real sense of venturing into the wild Accommodation Inside the park: Rest house, bandas and campsites (booking through te Park). Privately owned tented lodges. Outside the park: two basic hotels.

What to do Game drives, guided walking, bird watching, photography and camping safaris. Or go to Lake Katavi and visit the tamarind tree inhabited by the spirit of the legendary hunter Katabi, after whom the park is named. Locals seeking for the spirit’s blessing still leave offerings here. Park contacts: katavi@tanzaniaparks.com Hotlines: +255 689 062 314 / +255 767 536 128

Swahili Coast The Wealth of Tanzania Swahili means ‘coastal’ in Arabic and the Swahili Coast refers to Tanzania’s coastline and island with history, natural beauty, art and culture.

n the ninth or tenth centuries came Shirazi Persians from modern day Iran, sailing their ancient dhows across the Indian Ocean. Chinese, Japanese, Russian and Indonesian merchants and pirates, trades and adventures all arrived over the centuries during which the Swahili Coast was the centre of a thriving commercial civilization, with its own language, economy and artistic traditions. Ancient Greek manuscripts show that the east coast of Africa was visited by sailing vessels in classical times. They referred to the coast as Azania, hence the name

Tanzania (Tan –Tanganyika; Zan Zanzibar; and Azania). Today, reminders of the Swahili Coast’s and down the length of Tanzania. The brassbound chests and heavy wooden doors of the Swahili Empire are found far island, imported originally by the Arabic slave traders who led caravans into the interior in search of fortune. On the coast itself, crumbling mosques nestle among palm trees by white beaches and Persian baths lie ruined in the remains of ancient villas.

BAGAMOYO

Bagamoyo was once the centre of slave and ivory trading. It was the last point reached by the caravans of slaves who arrived here for transportation to faraway places. Today this attractive coastal town still bears reminders of its past-

slaves were kept while waiting for transportation still stands, as does the tree under which they were bought and sold.

KILWA

Kilwa Kisiwani Island was once the trading centre of the Swahili Empire. The runs of the settlement still remain and are considered to be one of the most important Swahili historical sites in East African. The famous traveller and chronicler lbn Battuta visited Kilwa in the 14th century, describing his admiration for the architecture and graceful situation of the capital city. Later the island became a trading post for slaves travelling north from Mauritius and Mozambique. The end of the town supremacy as a trading port came when it was ransacked, ostensibly by “cannibals” in 1588.

MAFIA ISLAND from the Ma-Africa tribe from ancient Yemen who dominated the coast Island is the largest of an island archipelago, off beaten track and known to only the most discerning travellers. The island is surrounded by a barrier reef so rich in marine life it has been designed a marine park by the World Wide Fund for Nature. A tiny population of pygmy hippo lives in the remains of an old lagoon, cut off from the mainland centuries.

PEMBA

Pemba Island rumoured to have once been inhabited by race of mythical glands, is an untouched beauty that offers an undiluted experience of island life in the Indian Ocean. The tiny number of visitors to Pemba every year

means that the island has little in the way of tourist infrastructure which for alternative travellers is the main attraction. Small guesthouses are dotted around the island, and there are couple of upmarket diving hotels and resorts, There are many historical sites and ruins to explore on Pemba including a number of old mosques and tombs and the old town fort of Chake Chake. The Pujini ruins south-east of Chake chake are the remnants th century. There is also Ngezi Forest, a beautiful untouched rainforest and home to the Pemba Flying Fox, a giant bat!

TANGA AND PANGANI

Ruins close to the active port of Tanga attest to its importance as a trading post in the Swahili trading empire. The ruins, once a large mosque, include more than 40 tombs, Tanga has pleasant beaches and is a convenient point from which to visit the spectacular Usambara Mountains. Just south of Tanga is Pangani, once the home of Arab slave traders, set on a lovely estuary of the Panani River.

ZANZIBAR (UNGUJA ISLAND)

For a small island in the southern waters of the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar has a long and unexpected history. For centuries the island has been a centre of slave and Ivory trade, if not all trading, from central Africa to the rest of the world and was the world’s main producer of the highly valued clove spice. It is also the centre of Swahili language and culture. Zanzibar is the undisputed capital of the Swahili Coast. The Portuguese were ousted with the help of Oman, in the mid-16th Century, whose vast trade connections had been severed by the entrance of the Portuguese.

PRISON ISLAND

and decipher the ages and causes of death of the servicemen – many died from tropical disease, or were killed in skirmishes with local slavers, Champwani also a small population of duikers (a type of miniature antelope),as well as Zanzibar, which rules the country to this day.

BAWE ISLAND Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island is one of the most popular destinations for day trips from Stone Town. Just a short boat ride away, the island offers, excellent snorkelling nature trail, small beach and the unusual attraction of a sanctuary for giant tortoises, Despite its name, the closest the island has come to actually being used as a prison was by its slaves there for discipline. In 2006, many of the islands old buildings were restored, and Changuu Private Island Paradise was opened, offering 15 deluxe cottages all on the seafront, affording maximum seclusion and privacy. There are also 12 standard rooms in the old quarantine area, with fantastic views back across to Stone Town. If swimming and snorkelling in the crystal blue waters gets too much, have a paddle in the freshwater swimming pool, court Mathews restaurant offers excellent seafood lunches and 4 course dinners, all overlooking the restored prison ruins.

CHAPWANI ISLAND

A slightly more upmarket choice than Prison Island, Chapwani, or Grave Island is the site of luxury hotel, but day visitors who come to eat and drink in the bar and restaurant are permitted. Chipwani is the site of British naval cemetery, the while serving in Zanzibar. The victims of the World War once attack on the HMS Pegasus by the German warship Konigsberg is also buried here. It’s interesting to wander around the graveyard

82 I Dar Life I August 2016

Bawe Island has some of excellent snorkelling sports, around a 30- minute boat ride and slightly more expensive than the boat to prison Island, it is much less visited, in 1870,the island, was used Zanzibar linking it with Aden, South Africa and the Seychelles. If complete isolation and privacy is what you are after, then Bawe Tropical Island is the perfect place to stay. There are 15 private cottages scattered along the beach front, all with breath-taking panoramic views of the ocean, and all tastefully decorated in soft colours to enhance the relaxed pace of life. The beach is excellent at low tide, with unusual stone formations, and there is some good snorkelling to be had on the island’s reef.

CHUMBWE ISLAND

Six kilometres south of Stone Town surrounded by pristine coral reef, Chumbe Island Coral Park is one of the world’s most successful eco-tourism project island was named Tanzania ‘s Marine National park. The island itself, covered with lush mangrove forest, is a designated forest reserve. Visitors can come for the day to snorkel over the incredible coral reef, home dolphins.

Travel tips

Language Swahili is the National language of Tanzania, however English is widely spoken, but learning a few words of Swahili can be useful and will be appreciated greatly by the local people.

Currency Tanzanian shilling (Tsh/Tzs) divided into 100 cents. Major foreign currencies – such as US$, Euro and travellers cheques are accepted and are convertible at banks and Forex bureaus in the main towns and tourist areas. Apart from most high-end lodges, credit cards are not widely accepted. Some banks in major cities offer ATM for credit/debit cards. Parks fees are payable using special TANAPA cards available at local CRDB & Ezim bank. Alternatively payment by Mastercard & Visa card are accepted. Avoid changing money in the street.

Major Airlines KLM, Swiss air, Qatar, Emirates, Oman, South African, Ethiopian, Kenya Airways, Turkish, Egypt, Rwanda air, Uganda air, Precision air, Fast Jet and Air Tanzania.

Health Yellow fever vaccination is required if travelling from susceptible countries. Malaria is endemic but is preventable: use insect repellant, cover up at sundown, sleep under a mosquito net and take anti-malaria prophylactics as advised by your doctor. Drink only boiled or bottled water and drinks.

Climate

Electricity

Generally dry and hot with cool nights/mornings in June – October; short rains from November to mid-December and long rains March – May, but the seasons can vary. The coastal strip is hot and humid all year round. Temperatures on Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru drop to below freezing.

230V, but power failures, surges and dips are common. Bring a universal adaptor and a torch (flashlight) or headlamp.

Clothes

Car hire

Pack lightweight, washable clothes plus a sweater for early morning game drives, as well as a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Long sleeves and trousers in light-coloured fabrics help discourage insect bites. Shorts for women are acceptable. Women should carry a wrap to cover legs in the villages and towns as revealing clothes can cause offence, especially in Zanzibar and Muslim areas. On the beach and within the confines of beach hotels normal swimwear is acceptable. If you have plans to climb Kilimanjaro or Meru, bring thermal underwear, light layers, a sweater, rain jacket, proper socks and sturdy boots.

Self-drive vehicles are available mainly for local errands or tarmac use. 4x4 vehicles for safaris usually have to be hired with a driver.

On safari Distances in Tanzania are vast and travel by road can be wearing. Plan to spend more time in fewer parks. You’ll see more and won’t return home exhausted. Keep your distance from animals and be quiet to avoid distressing the wildlife. Follow instructions of rangers or guides. Don’t leave your vehicle in the parks except in designated places. Keep to recognised tracks to avoid damaging vegetation.

Photography Protect your camera from dust and keep equipment and film cool. It is courteous to ask permission before photographing local people. If you intend to take a lot of people pictures, please bring an instant printer with you so that you can leave a picture with the people you photograph.

Insurance Take out travel insurance to cover loss of baggage or valuables, personal accident and medical expenses.

Tipping Tipping is not obligatory, but a tip for exceptional service.

Time

Cuissine Local and international cuissine are served in hotels and lodges.

Driving People drive on the left side of the road. An international licence is required. Plan long safaris carefully, ensuring your vehicle is road worthy. Please bring two spare tyres, an operational jack and tool kit. Carry extra fuel, spares and water.

Travel with children Tanzanians love children and are especially helpful to mothers. However, canned baby food, powdered milk and disposable nappies may not be available outside major towns.

Visas Check current requirements with the nearest Tanzanian High Commission, embassy or consulate, or your travel agent.

Security Tanzania is a generally safe country, but do use common sense. Keep an eye on your belongings. Don’t walk in the towns or cities at night – take a taxi instead. Don’t carry cameras or large amounts of cash and beware of pickpockets. Use hotel safety deposit boxes to safeguard valuables and obtain a receipt. Leave valuable jewellery at home.

39
