TANZANIA SGR SERVICES
On August 1, 2024, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan officially launched the commercial operation of the country’s electric standard gauge railway (SGR) passenger train service from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma, the capital of Tanzania. The anticipation was palpable as dignitaries, the public and journalists from around the country gathered at the Dar es Salaam Train Station (now Magufuli Station), Morogoro Train Station (now Kikwete Station), and Dodoma Train Station (now Samia Station) for the grand launch of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) services. This momentous event was not just another ribbon-cutting ceremony; it was a symbol of Tanzania’s leap into a new era of infrastructural development and economic transformation. The ceremony was not confined to a single location; it was a journey itself, a testament to the transformative power of connectivity and infrastructure.
TANZANIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS
The Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) has announced plans to reconstruct VIP lounges at Mwanza, Kilimanjaro, and the two Arusha airports this financial year. The upgrades aim to accommodate the growing influx of international tourists and business travellers. TAA’s Director General, Mussa Mbura, revealed that each state-of-the-art VIP lounge will cost approximately 600 million Tanzanian shillings (£190,000). The government has allocated funds for these improvements, expecting returns within a year. This initiative follows the recent 600-million-shilling renovation of the VIP lounge at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam. In response, ground handling service provider Swissport has invested in two new Mercedes Benz vehicles, each worth 350 million shillings (£110,000) to transport VIP passengers at JNIA.
ZANZIBAR ISLAND
Zanzibar expects to introduce an insurance scheme for incoming travellers for all guests entering the archipelago, focused especially on tourists, taking out a three-month scheme costing $44 and paid online. Dr Saada Mkuya Salum, the Finance and Planning state minister in the Zanzibar President’s Office, told a meeting of stakeholders that under the scheme, incoming travellers would be provided with immediate support in case of medical challenges in particular. Setting up an insurance arrangement is expected to increase the number of tourists and thus improve revenue collection, she stated, noting that the government was finalising the insurance scheme procedures, to be managed by the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC). The government is also improving regulatory systems to ensure the delivery of quality services for residents and visitors, in view of the fact that Zanzibar receives many visitors, some for tourism and others for conferences.

Mkomazi National Park
A beautiful tranquil park with an amazing story
Set below the verdant slopes of the spectacular Usambara and Pare Eastern Arc Mountain ranges and overseen by iconic snow –capped peak of Kilimanjaro, Mkomazi a virgin breathtaking beauty exhibiting unique natural treasures and immense sense of space – adds to the fulfilment of high visitor enjoyment expectations – a much needed bridge between northern circuit and coastal attractions.
Everyday, thousands of people pass within a few kilometres of Mkomazi on one of Tanzania’s busiest highways. These and northern circuit safari – goers are now most welcome to discover the treasures of this wedge of hilly semi – arid savannah – home of large herds of giraffe, eland, hartebeest, zebra, buffalo and elephant.
Mkomazi is a vital refuge for two highly endangered species, the charismatic black
rhino and sociable African wild dog, both of which were successfully reintroduced in the 1990s. Nomadic by nature, wild dogs might be seen almost anywhere in the park, but black rhino are restricted to a fenced sanctuary, ensuring their safe keeping for future generations enjoyment and prosperity.
Mkomazi supports several dry – country specialists’ species that are rare elsewhere
Mkomazi National Park is not famed for its vast number of animals but for its beauty. To the northwest are incredible views of Mount Kilimanjaro, and to the south are the Pare and Usambara Mountains. Kenya’s huge Tsavo National Park borders the park. Together, they create a large and important ecosystem, allowing numerous animals to migrate back and forth. However, dig a little deeper here, and you will discover a remarkable and a continually unfolding story of habitat and wildlife restoration. Plus, the reintroduction of two endangered species -the Black Rhino and the Wild Dog.
in Tanzania; these include the spectacular fringe – eared oryx, with its long back – sweeping horns, and the handsome spiral – horned lesser kudu. Oddest of all is the gerenuk, a gazelle distinguished by its slender neck, bizarre alien – like head, and habit of standing tall on its hind legs stretching for acacia leaves that other browsers cannot reach.
A game reserve since 1951, this new National Park takes its name from Pare tribe’s word for “scoop of water”, referring to little water. It is a fantastic destination for birdwatchers, with more than 450 avian species recorded, among them dry – country endemics such as the cobalt – chested vulturine guinea
FACTS
The park covers over 3,234 square kilometres (323,400 ha), and is dominated by Acacia-Commiphora vegetation; it is contiguous with Kenya's Tsavo West National Park. The area commonly called 'Mkomazi' is actually the union of two previous game reserves, the Umba Game Reserve in the east (in Lushoto District, Tanga Region) and the Mkomazi Game Reserve in the west (in Same District, Kilimanjaro Region); in government documents they are sometimes called the Mkomazi-Umba Game
Reserves. Of the two, Mkomazi is larger, and has more diversity of relief and habitat, and a longer shared border with Tsavo West National Park. In the rest of this entry, 'Mkomazi' will refer to both the Mkomazi and Umba reserves together.
fowl, other large ground birds such as ostrich, kori bustard, secretary bird, ground horn-bill and some migratory species including Eurasian roller.
Scenery Set below the slopes of the spectacular Usambara and PareEastern Arc Mountain ranges and overseen by the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro, Mkomazi has particular scenic appeal and a sense of immense space.
Wildlife
Mkomazi National Park is famous for its endangered Wild Dogs and Black Rhinos. Animals like giraffe, oryx, gerenuk, hartebeest, lesser kudu, eland, impala and
grant’s gazelle share the park with elephants, buffalo and numerous predators including lions, leopards and cheetah.
Birdlife
A healthy population of 450 species of birds are also found in the park and most of them are seen during a game drive. The most commonly seen species include Go away birds, Ostriches, Long Crested Eagles, Hoopes and Bustards. Doves, Hornbills, Weavers and Guinea-Fowl are all present in large numbers including the martial eagle and violet WoodHoopoe.
Plantlife
Acacias, Commiphora
woodlands and dry land forests are typical of the vegetation found here.
Attractions
The park is renowned for a variety of attractions ranging from unique landscapes to wildlife species especially those found in arid or semi desert habitats.
• Black Rhino Sanctuary: Tourists are able to watch rhinos at close range. Mkomazi National Park erected an electric fence with two areas where the black rhino are. One is for breeding and one is for tourists where they can watch the Rhino’s during a
special trip with cars from the park.
• Remoteness: It’s an ideal park if you want to experience vastness and remoteness. Very few visitors travel here, making it a secluded destination to take a break from the rest of the world.
• Wild Hunting Dogs: These long-legged canines can only be seen in abundance when you visit Mkomazi. Their four toes per foot, unlike other dogs, make them unique. They live in packs therefore they are social animals and communicate by touch, actions and vocalisations.
Activities
There are several tourism activities inside and outside the park;
• Day Game Drive: This is the main tourism activity in the park where visitors visit different areas of attraction inside the Park using vehicles during the day.
• Walking Safaris: In Mkomazi visitors have an opportunity to walk around the Park with an armed trained Park Ranger. Can do short walks around Dindira or Long walks starting from Zange area (Park’s Headquarters) to Babu’s area.
• Bird Watching: The park has more than 450 bird species, including the migrant ones, birds of prey
and water birds, hence making this the best area for bird lover visitors to enjoy this activity within the Park.
• Filming: Mkomazi National Park has a good scenery full of nature’s beauty, and other attractions found in abundance, this makes it an ideal area for filming.
• Nature Walk: Nature walk can be done in Nilo and Amani Nature Reserves near Muheza town. Walking and Hiking in Chome Nature Forest Reserve in Same.
Getting there
• The Park can be accessed by road and air;
• Road: The Park is 120 km from Moshi. The nearest entry gate is 6 km on a
graveled road. The Park is also easily accessible on special arrangement through Njiro, Kivingo and Umba gates.
• Air: Chartered flights such as Safari Airlink are available to Kisima airstrip in the centre of the park near the rhino sanctuary.
When To Go
You can visit Mkomazi National Park all year round. However, the best time to go to Mkomazi National Park is the Dry Season, from June to October -Ideal for seeing the wildlife
and the rhinos at the visitor’s centre and Green Season, from March to May - The best time for photographing Mount Kilimanjaro thanks to clear skies and green landscapes.
Where To Stay
There are several accommodation facilities inside and outside the park but our recommendation is Mkomazi View Camp, with only 6 furnished en-suite tents, situated in the north-western part of the park near the new Mbula Rhino Sanctuary and Dindira Dam. Surrounded
by rolling hills, it is located on a slope with views across Watershed Valley, popular with eland, zebras, giraffe, elephant and Bohor reedbuck. The wide variety of bird life is well known among bird specialists.
For the more discerning safari lover who is looking for an ‘off the beaten track’ pure vastness and remoteness experience, a visit to Mkomazi to view its large beasts, stunning vistas, numerous baobabs and unique birds and animals must not be missed!

Tanzania Water Adventure
From Kitesurfing to whale watching
Imagine Tanzania a country by the great Indian Ocean, and the largest lake in Africa, the country prides in a number of water sport activities among which are some of the finest diving spots in the world on freshwater-lakes and the ocean, boat trips, yacht trips, snorkelling, white-water rafting among others.
The waters of Tanzania are blessed with a variety of reefs plus tropical fish that can best be viewed by diving off the Tanzanian mainland. In addition you can enjoy diving trips to any of the islands of Tanzania such as Mafia, Zanzibar and Pemba which are located just off the country’s shoreline. If you are planning to visit Tanzania,

BLUE SAFARIS

Below are some of the best water adventures you can enjoy while in Tanzania.
KITESURFING
Kitesurfing has become the hottest and most popular up-and-coming activity in Zanzibar. Kitesurfing centres are popping up all along the east coast of the island, providing adrenaline seeking visitors with the chance to
undertake lessons and get out on the waves while on holiday.
CANOEING
Canoeing trips are available in the Arusha National Park and are a wonderful experience, drifting past herds of elephant, giraffe, hippo and buffalo as you cruise along the shores of the lake surrounded by
snorkelling, or simply admire the beautiful scenery of the water’s edge. This is one of the best ways to see the Selous Game Reserve, up the huge muddy brown sweep of the Rufiji River, spotting hundreds of resident hippos and crocodiles. Sail into chimpanzee territory on a dhow, skimming over the fresh, crystal waters of Lake Tanganyika to Mahale Mountains National Park, or travel up the Wami River
in Saadani, surrounded by amazing birdlife, hippos and crocodiles. Visit the Indian Ocean islands, sometimes several in a day, enjoying the coral reefs, marine life and birds of each island along the way.
DEEP SEA AND INLAND FISHING

in the world, especially the Pemba Channel, between Zanzibar and Pemba, and around Mafia Island, south of Zanzibar. Rivers are stocked with trout around Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru. Large rivers such as the Kilombero and Great Ruaha offer fabulous sport fishing for Tiger Fish, and large Nile Perch can be caught in the great lakes.
DHOW CRUISES
When Sultans ruled and the monsoon winds carried trade across the Indian Ocean, the vessel used was the Dhow, with its characteristic lateen sail made with merikani cloth. So step back in time, and sail the crystal blue waters of the Zanzibar Archipelago on an
original dhow. Choose from sunrise cruises, sandbank picnics, or sunset cruises, but whichever it is, just sit back and enjoy the serenity.
DIVING AND SNORKELLING
The coral reefs off Tanzania’s coast around Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia Island offer some of the world’s finest scuba diving and snorkelling. Diving is possible all year round, however visibility is best from November to March, before the long rains set in.
WHALE WATCHING
Tanzania’s Indian Ocean is home to one of the least known populations of Humpback Whales in the
world. Researchers from Stockholm University and the University of Dar es Salaam are studying the Humpback Whales found near Zanzibar to learn more about their population and conservation status. The herds of migrating whales arrive in the waters around Zanzibar in late July, and August is now becoming the most popular month for sightings. waves while on holiday.
For novices, you can enroll for the diving courses which are offered by several hotels plus lodges back on the mainland. So book today for a Tanzania Safari to enjoy the wonderful water adventures the country offers.
Exploring Zanzibar at its fullest with Maru Maru hospitality
On the historic island of Zanzibar, amidst the quaint, narrow alleys of Stone Town is Maru Maru Hotel, once a townhouse now boasts 51 well-laid rooms.
Maru Maru Hotel consists of two wings – the Classic Wing with 11 rooms, which have undergone restoration, and the New Wing with 33 modern rooms built around a small courtyard with a star-shaped fountain. The courtyard is ideal for spending time quietly reading, the noise of the water in the fountain a soothing backdrop. On the way to the courtyard, there is a coffee shop which also serves freshly baked pastries and cakes just in case you want to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea whilst rewinding.
The rooms are well equipped with modern amenities, a comfortable bed in Zanzibari style, swathed in a mosquito net, which is not only essential but also creates a romantic atmosphere with the stained-

glass shades.
An elevator connects both wings to the rooftop terrace, which is a delightful place to be, largely because of the stunning view of the ocean, so you can witness the gentle traffic of dhows, a vista that’s barely changed in generations.
Climbing the flight of wooden stairs leading to the terrace restaurant and reflecting on the hotel’s personality, it’s evident why Maru Maru has been the
preferred property for eminent personalities like Bill Clinton and his daughter, Chelsea. And it wasn’t just the atmosphere that struck me, the scent of the place did too: the hotel smells wonderful as day-long diffusers burn perfumed essential oils.
Maru Maru serves a delightful variety of cuisines, especially Continental and Asian – quality is great and portions are generous. I especially loved the way an array of sauces was offered which you could blend with the main ingredient – poultry, meat, seafood or vegetables.
All the staff right - from the General Manager, receptionist, chefs –lead and supporting roles were super friendly and helpful. Services and requests were promptly addressed.
So, if you’re after an affordable Stone Town break – Maru Maru is a great option and delivers the perfect launch pad from where to explore this historic little place.
Lazy Lagoon Island
Surrender In Serenity To The Sound Of The Sea
Two kilometres off the shore of mainland Tanzania is an idyllic private island. With turquoise waters, and white sandy beaches, this coral surrounded island is always isolated from land, maintaining its exclusivity to guests of Lazy Lagoon Island Lodge. Although remote and nestled away behind mangrove islands, Lazy Lagoon is easy to visit by those residing in Dar es Salaam. The discovery of this paradise requires only a short drive to the boat pick up location just south of Bagamoyo, and a 15-minute ferry across the beautiful lagoon to Lazy Lagoon Island.
Once on the island, guests can enjoy nine kilometres of private island wonders, sharing with only a small number of rooms. Spend your days exploring the area with long walks along the white beaches, strolls through the mangrove forest and investigate the rock pools filled with colourful sea creatures. Being a small island, lazy
Lagoon is quite unique by offering sea swimming at all tides, unlike much of East Africa. The coral reef surrounding and protecting the island offers a great opportunity for snorkelling, and the artificial jetty attracts schools of brightly coloured fish, creating an aquarium like experience.
The island contains an interesting ecosystem, with many small mammals such as bush babies, suni antelope, vervet monkeys and bush pig, along with birds and butterflies. Low tide washes up a plethora or exotically coloured starfish, seas urchins and crabs. All of these share their habitats with the natural mangrove forest.
Following the decline of the nearby Kaole settlement, Bagamoyo grew out of the slave and ivory trade. It was also referred to as the “gateway to the dark continent” by explorers including Livingstone, Burton, Speke, Stanley, Grant and others who used Bagamoyo to launch their expeditions to find the source of the Nile.
Lazy Lagoon features 12 en suite natural makuti beach bandas, each bandas are built and furnished using local businesses, and resources. Each banda is situated along the beach, enjoying uninterrupted views of the ocean. From the sundowner lounge above the bar, guests can watch the stunning sunrise over Zanzibar and set over the palm trees of Bagamoyo.
Later, Bagamoyo became the capital of German East Africa. At Lazy Lagoon, guests have the chance to embark on a day excursion to Bagamoyo with a guide, learning about its detailed and prominent history, similar to that of Stone Town.
One can feel the Swahili atmosphere as they follow the flotilla of local fishing boats tacking around the island to get from their villages to the fishing grounds beyond.
Days are often structured around the delicious meals provided, making use of fresh local produce and fish straight
Lazy Lagoon allows you to get away from it all and relax, whether sunbathing with a cocktail in hand, or partaking in some of the activities available. Being a lagoon, guests can enjoy more tame waters compared to the open ocean, allowing for sea kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, sailing, swimming, and snorkelling. At low tide, there are many interesting uninhabited sand banks and mangrove forests to explore, accessible by paddle board and kayak.

At night the most spectacular stargazing commences, looking out for the shooting stars and identifying constellations, made even more defined after the generator is turned off.
This island lodge truly provides an ‘off the beaten track’ experience, where visitors can not only rest and unwind away from hordes of people, but also get to know and explore the real Swahili Coast.

The race featured many dignitaries, including the guest of honour, the Governor of Katanga Province, Honourable Jacques Kyabula, who was accompanied by 10 provincial ministers led by the Minister of Sports and the Minister of Health.
The race was graced by the Tanzanian Ambassador to the DR Congo, Ambassador Said Mshana, the Burundian Ambassador to the DRC, and various CRDB Bank officials led by the Chairman of the CRDB Bank Board of Directors, Ally Laay, and the acting managing director of CRDB Bank, Bruce Mwile.
Honourable Kyabula commended CRDB Bank for bringing together the Congolese and participants from neighbouring countries to contribute to improving children’s healthcare and enhancing community welfare.

The marathon is part of the bank’s strategy to support government efforts to enhance the welfare of the Congolese people.
By the Chairman of the CRDB Bank DRC Board, Fred Msemwa

TECHNIQUES TO WIN IN AN INTERVIEW
5 Mistakes to Avoid in Your Next Interview
Interviewing is often a fraught exercise. You’re threading the needle between selling yourself and your accomplishments, while also being humble and self-aware. Say too much and you’re unlikeable. Say too little and people wonder if you have the skills.
Keep in mind that the interviewer hasn’t done your job at your company, and they can’t read your mind. So, instead of simply listing out all the things you did at your last job, speak to the value that your work added to the team, product, or company.
So, want to nail your next interview? Read on for five mistakes to avoid.
1
.Being Unprepared: By not bothering to familiarize yourself with the product or the company, the interviewer is left wondering if you even want the job, since you didn’t put in the time to test out the experience or care to know
More about what you are getting into.
2
. Appearing Apathetic: The interviewer has invested their energy and passion into the company they are at, and they want to hire someone who has the same commitment and excitement. Hearing you say you don’t really have a particular interest in their company or that you are there because you ‘just’ need a job, is an instant turn off. If you are unsure of your interest, say you are excited about the opportunity to learn more rather than give a half-hearted reply.
3
. Focusing on the Wrong Things: Scope and impact go hand in hand. Proving yourself makes it possible for you to grow your influence. Interviewers want to work with someone humble and willing to learn, not someone who sees the job as a stepping stone to something more. Explain how you want to further the company and the team, not just yourself. Show you’re a team player by explaining how you’ve successfully managed projects through to the end.
4
. Lacking Self-Awareness: What really is your greatest weakness? Couching it in a positive response makes interviewers think you are not self-aware enough to provide an answer, which means you are not open to growth. By sharing what you are working on and what clear, concrete steps you are taking to improve, you will build a Coonection with the interviewer and humanize your challenges.
5
. Selling Rather Than Listening: A strong candidate is a great listener. Asking and learning what meaning is behind a question is important. Show you are intellectually curious and want to adapt new information. When you’re in an interview, listen to the question, but also consider the rationale behind it. The interviewer may be asking the question to learn more about your skill set. How you respond says a lot about your ability to not only answer the obvious question, but also your deductive reasoning skills.

The Tanzanian government, under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, supports this digital shift. The Tanzania Instant Payment System (TIPS), introduced by the BoT, is a significant step towards instant electronic payments. The government aims to further enhance this system with QR code payment capabilities.
The surge in electronic transaction users, from 38.3 million in 2022 to 51.7 million in 2023, underscores the growing acceptance and reliance on digital banking in Tanzania.

Exim Bank’s "Tap Tap Utoboe" campaign is designed to encourage the adoption of digital banking by rewarding customers who engage with mobile and online platforms.
The campaign features:
• Weekly Cash Prizes: 10 customers each week win TZS 50,000.

Winning cash was an unexpected delight, and I now regularly use these convenient services." Enhancing Financial Inclusion
The transformation brought about by digital banking extends beyond mere convenience; it significantly enhances financial inclusion across the country. Remote areas, often underserved by traditional banking methods, now have unprecedented access to financial services. This shift is vital for fostering economic growth and development in these regions.
Digital banking allows individuals and businesses in rural areas to participate more fully in the economy. Farmers can receive payments electronically, reducing the risks associated with cash transactions. Small business owners can manage their finances more efficiently, track expenses, and make informed decisions, contributing to their business growth and sustainability.
Supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of Tanzania’s economy. By providing accessible digital banking services, Exim Bank supports the growth and development of SMEs. The ability to conduct transactions online, apply for loans, and manage business accounts through digital platforms reduces the administrative burden on business owners, allowing them to focus on expanding their operations.
Moreover, digital banking facilitates easier access to credit for SMEs. Traditional banking often involves lengthy and complex processes for loan approvals. Digital banking, however, streamlines these processes, providing quicker and more efficient access to funds, enabling SMEs to seize growth opportunities and enhance their competitiveness.
Educational Initiatives and Digital Literacy
To maximize the benefits of digital banking, Exim Bank is also focusing on enhancing digital literacy among its customers. The bank conducts educational initiatives and workshops to
teach customers how to use digital banking platforms effectively. These efforts are particularly important in ensuring that all segments of the population, including the elderly and those with limited technological experience, can take full advantage of digital banking services.
Through these initiatives, Exim Bank is not just providing services but also empowering customers with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the digital landscape confidently. This holistic approach ensures that the transition to digital banking is smooth and inclusive.

WHOW TO SOLVE ISSUES AT YOUR OFFICE
Who You Can Turn to When You Can’t Count on HR (or Your Boss)
what might be an uncomfortable conversation. Remember, you don’t have to rely on just one ally—pick a combination of people that makes sense for you and your particular situation. People you can turn to, can be in two categories; Internal and external people.
Let’s say your relationship with your direct manager is going south, quickly. There’s zero communication or little support, and your interactions are terse at best. It’s time to turn to an inside ally. These people know the office culture—and hopefully your manager—backward and forward, so they can easily offer guidance on interpersonal issues.
to handle? It’s time to call in an expert from the outside to coach you through it. This person may not be able to sit in the meeting with you, but they have the knowledge you need and can be your cheerleaders along the way.
On The External category, you can count on the following people:
A Third-Party HR Company: While your company may not have HR onsite, they may work with a third-party vendor to help with on-boarding, benefits, and payroll. Sometimes this even includes access to HR consultants who can help you navigate tricky issues. Check your benefits paperwork for a phone number you can call or a website you can check for resources.
hen your company doesn’t have a dedicated or reliable HR team (or any HR employees at all), dealing with certain workplace issues or questions can be intimidating—especially if you don’t have the best relationship with your boss or the issue in question is with your boss. This doesn’t mean you’re completely alone. All you need are allies to help guide and empower you to make the right call.
There are several different kinds of allies you can turn to. They can help you express your frustrations, come up with a thoughtful solution, and formulate a detailed and professional plan so that you’re prepared to confidently handle
On the internal category, you can count on the following people:
`A Hiring Manager: Who else did you interview with to get your job besides your boss? Suggest meeting with them for a coffee date offsite—they’re the ones who most likely work closely with your manager and understand what makes them tick. They also probably know you and how you work, so they can tailor their responses accordingly.
A Trusted Colleague: Do you have a relationship with another manager or colleague you trust and respect? This shouldn’t be your work best friend who you vent to at happy hour, but someone you have more of a professional relationship with. Tap this person for a confidential meeting to ask for advice.
What if the issue is just too complex for your non-HR allies
A Career Coach: Why not entrust someone who’s done this before, a lot? Many career coaches and consultants will create tailored strategies, example scripts, and go through mock conversations to make sure you’re equipped to handle any difficult situations at work.
Armed with the support and guidance from your allies, it’s time to address that issue head on. Navigating workplace problems is never easy, and it’s even more difficult without HR, but by building a trusted team that can help you with various aspects of a tricky situation, you can handle just about anything.
