Karibu Music Festival 2014 First Edition in Bagamoyo a Success

aribu Music Festival is a new international music festival created by Karibu Cultural Promotions Organization (KCPO) in collaboration with Legendary Music Entertainment and Promotion Company. The first annual edition of the three-day festival featured 40 groups and bands in total from Tanzania and beyond. More than 300 artists participated in music performances, workshops and seminars, film screenings, road shows, competitions, and numerous other activities. “The main attraction
of the festival was the mixture of music, dance and cultural exposure, as artists from different parts of the world were invited to share the stage with the local East African artists. Among the international artists who performed were Ife Piankhi from Uganda, Orchestra Shiwe from Comoros, Mbiye Ebrima from Gambia, Fantuzzi from the USA and Panda and Masayo from Japan.”

Mama Africa, Chibite Zawose, Tongwa Ensemble, Leo Mkanyia, Swahili Blues, Hokororo Band Swahili, Vibes, Abeneko Music and Msafiri Zawose. Bongo Flava was represented by Barnaba, Professor Jay, Shilole and Juma Nature. The festival, which was held at the Mwanakalenge Grounds in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, attracted both local and international festival goers. According to the organizers more than 10,000 people in total attended the festival across its three-day span. “The first edition of the Karibu Music Festival was successful in the sense that it accomplished some of our visions, despite the challenges that we encountered,” explained Festival Manager, Richard Lupia. The festival aims to nurture and promote African music and culture to the world and to create collaboration opportunities among all participants. In the future, the festival will focus on various genres of music, from traditional African Music to Pop, Rock, Reggae, Hip hop, Jazz, Country, Electronic and other alternative music. The second edition of the Karibu Music Festival will take place in Bagamoyo from Friday 6th to Sunday 8th November, 2015. The arrangement and logistics for the second edition are already in progress. ESRF 3rd National Conference on Economic Development Unleashing Growth Potential in Tanzania: Economic Transformation for Human Development By Brittany Karima

ith the support of UNDP, the Economic and Social Research Foundation convened a national conference in Dar es Salaam, which was attended by over 200 participants from Government, Development Partners, academia, private sector and Civil Society Organizations to discuss Tanzania’s development challenges and options under the theme “Unleashing Growth Potential in Tanzania: Economic Transformation for Human Development.” The President of Tanzania, H.E. Jakaya Kikwete officially

opened the conference held at Hyatt Regency Kilimanjaro and called for sustainable development, with a focus on inclusiveness. He urged participants to explore more initiatives towards poverty reduction underpinned by an inclusive and national ownership approach.

Speaking over the weekend at the conference held in Dar es Salaam, Dr. Hoseana Lunogelo said human capital development is a key ingredient in overall socio-economic
development of nations and that it is among the key considerations for investors when selecting potential areas for investment. Lunogelo said availability of a rich pool of skilled workers is an incentive for foreign and domestic investors, noting that it contributes to social inclusion and integration of youth. “By investing in human capital, the government will ensure that citizens are well equipped to earn a living and be productive members of the society,” he added. “Human capital embodies skills, competence, knowledge
and personality attributes which enhance the efficiency of labour. A skilled labour force is critical in order to effectively utilize and mobilize domestic resources that will in turn assure provision of basic needs and economic growth,” he went on to say. Dr Lunogelo stressed that with the growing development challenges that face Tanzania, human capital development must be carefully addressed.“Education and health provide the basis to building national capabilities to improve the productivity and competitiveness of countries.” December 2014 I Dar Life I 23

Addressing the same conference, the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident, Mr. Alvaro Rodriguez stressed that “Economic Transformation for Human Development” is a critical area of work for the UN in Tanzania – that is to support Tanzania to pursue human development, which is about improving people’s lives. He added that UNDP is committed to continuing its close collaboration with the government and other stakeholders to improve people’s lives based on equitable and inclusive growth, resilience to safeguards, hard-won development gains against vulnerability, as well as ensuring sustainability 24 I Dar Life I December 2014
for people and the planet itself. Moving forward on inclusiveness, it is important to highlight the challenges and policy options for Tanzania. Mr. Alvaro commended the Government efforts putting human development at the center of its development efforts. Some of the recommendations for Tanzania to reach its growth potential are: • Improve the quality of education and health; • Ensure that growth is inclusive; • Prudently manage natural resources for sustainable human development; • Promote macroeconomic stability and policy coherence.
The recommendations will feed into discussions on policy options of Tanzania going forward, both to support the MDGs and eventually the SDGs as well. The conference was attended by scholars from outside and within Tanzania, government officials, development partners, members of Parliament and civil society organisations, and individuals from the private sector. Since its establishment 20 years ago, the ESRF has been able to participate in the development, evaluation and assessment of various national development frameworks in the country.

The 7th annual Swahili Fashion Week took place from 5th to 7th December 2014 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Fashion Week 2014 brought together 40 designers from within Tanzania and beyond to showcase their collections, predicting trends for the East African market in 2015. Swahili Fashion Week continues to be the biggest fashion platform in East and Central Africa. Each year, designers market their creativity and network with domestic and international clientele in the industry.

Artisan Market Again a Success
Dar Life was present at the 11th bi-annual Artisan Market held in Oyster Bay, Dar es Salaam this month. The event, which is run by a team of female volunteers originally from outside of Tanzania, began several years ago with just four small vendors. The Artisan Market has grown exponentially with over 80 vendors from around Tanzania selling beautiful and unique crafts and goods, including jewelry, handbags and wallets, tableware, home decorations, and clothing. Created in 1951 as a subterfuge to circumvent a law that forbade the selling of listed wines, including Beaujolais, before the 15th of December, Beaujolais Nouveau is now celebrated all over the world.
Guests were treated to freeflowing Beaujolais Nouveau as an aperitif, in addition to a selection of red and white French wines paired to the feast on offer. In addition to these pleasures, the festivities also included live music, a DJ spinning French music, and a raffle where guests won many prizes. The organizers of Beaujolais Nouveau in Tanzania were happy to give a taste of the 2014 vintage!

Growing in popularity, this year’s Beaujolais Nouveau took place for the second consecutive year at Coral Beach Hotel. The famous French « fête » was held in celebration of the annual tradition of uncorking the Beaujolais Nouveau wine. “A ton of fun was had at the First Annual Turkey Trot race/walk to raise money to protect elephants on Sunday November 23, 2014. The Trot took place around Masaki from the Best Western Coral Beach.�

Participants got ready with a warmup by AfriRoots, followed by the official start. The lead runner followed the Jeep pace car until the end, where all finishers celebrated with the Tanzanian Body Builders in the dunk tank. There was even an unexpected twist -- first place went to a runner in flip-flops!

Shopping for Good Supporting Tanzanian Artisans

O
n 23 November 2014, Oyster Bay Shopping Centre hosted the biannual Artisan Market for the 10th time. The Centre has supported this popular market for 5 ½ years and continues to attract large numbers of customers and vendors. Co-founder Sona Shah remarks on the initiative’s founding, “This market has its roots from friends getting together and creating a unique experience for the vendors and the community alike, and is a completely not for profit, volunteer run project.”
As another one of the organizers, Dyan Larmey, explained, local artisans apply to sell their wares at the event. The organizers limit vendors to specialty artisans involved in production and generally have high quality standards. However, a few emerging artisans are selected for each market and strategically placed alongside more experienced artisans in an effort to be inclusive and encourage 38 I Dar Life I December 2014
artisans to further specialize and improve their products. The Artisan Market stimulates Tanzanian commerce and creativity, as the competitive and bustling atmosphere allows vendors to make large profits and gain invaluable exposure to shoppers from all over Dar es Salaam. Shah explained, “We have vendors from Mtwara, Arusha, Mwanza and several other places from all over Tanzania, with our reputation growing further afield and people from Kenya and Uganda expressing an interest to attend.” Vendors are carefully selected from a thorough application process based on quality, type of product, and location – and most vendors are Tanzanian in order to support national commerce. As the market expands each year, the field grows more competitive, and standards leap higher and higher. This creates diversity of product and a drive toward higher quality, both in terms of customer expectation and artisan workmanship. Speaking for the volunteer team, Shah states, “As the organizers, we have seen a remarkable trend towards a better variety and higher quality of products made in Tanzania. Artists that once exhibited here now sell to the USA. Others have found themselves in incredible collaborative projects that have led to export. Funds from December 2014 I Dar Life I 39
sales go towards newer product development. It is wonderful to see the how things are developing!” The opportunity for artisans to exhibit their products on a scale of this size has undoubtedly led to the growth of Tanzanian businesses, which are now able to test their mettle on an international level. But there is also a deeper purpose accomplished by the Artisan Market:
“The emphasis in these collectives is not only to make a profit to fund charitable works, but to train and empower people to live more independent, stable, and fulfilling lives. The Artisan Market is thus a great place to support sustainable human development, while also doing some affordable shopping for unique handmade products. In the words of one vendor, “This is a hopeful place, it gives us hope to keep doing what we do when we see people excited about the things we create. This year’s camp focused on malaria prevention, education and treatment and free mosquito nets were handed out to camp participants. An additional focus this year was maternal and child health. Free obstetric emergency kits were distributed to pregnant women and antenatal counselling was provided.

n Tanzania, a land of superb landscapes and spectacular wildlife, another attraction stands equally tall – the people. Tanzania’s people are among the most welcoming and approachable on earth, with a range of fascinating cultures ready to be shared with visitors. From the WaChagga of the slopes of Kilimanjaro to the now world-famous Maasai, a

cultural excursion or a longer stay among local people is likely to become one of the most rewarding experiences of any holiday in Tanzania. Many local areas run their own cultural programmes for visitors, bringing income directly to the community and giving the people the chance to show their lifestyle to the outside world on their own terms. Primary schools can be developed through a tour of the fascinating slopes of Mount Meru, a health clinic is improved through a guided tour of the luscious green Usambara Mountains, or a kindergarten funded by a stroll through the tropical vegetation of the Rift Valley. Walk the most remote mountains of northern Tanzania with local farmers, through traditional Pare villages and dense tropical forests. From half-day to three-day guided hikes, this is an opportunity to step into the culture of the Pare people. Visit the Mghimbi Caves, secret hiding place during the slave raids, proceed to Malameni Rock, the scene of human sacri ces to appease evil spirits up until the 1930s. Walk through the Ikongwe Village, believed by locals to be a gift from heaven, surrounded by mountain terraces and small waterfalls. The Art of Getting Into Action and Getting Things Done By Long Yun Siang
People like to wait. Or they like to think that they are doing something even though all they do is talk about doing.
1. Talking Is Not Doing. Most people like to talk and talking gives them a sense that they are acting out their plans. They can call this brainstorming, discussing or even planning, but these activities are not to be confused with doing. If you want something to happen, act now. Do what is planned and stop talking.
2. Plans Must Be Followed By Action. The challenge is to get people to act upon their plans when they have planned it. Act now. Do not go back to the drawing board and start deliberating again and again. I am a big fan of the philosophy, “a good plan executed today is better 64 I Dar Life I December 2014
talk. Nothing ever gets done. They think they are thinkers. I call them time wasters. If you can act upon those plans and get things going, people will see you as someone who is productive. The best part is, it does not discount you as a thinker! Who says do-ers can’t be thinkers as well?

Put up a “Do not disturb” sign when you absolutely have to get work done. 8. Practice not answering the phone just because it’s ringing and e-mails just because they show up. Disconnect instant messaging. Don’t instantly give people your attention unless it’s absolutely crucial in your business to offer an immediate human response. Instead, schedule a time to answer email and return phone calls. 9. Block out other distractions like Facebook and other forms of social media unless you use these tools to generate business. 10 Remember that it’s impossible to get everything done. Also remember that odds are good that 20 percent of your thoughts, conversations and activities produce 80 percent of your results.

Dar Choral Society Bridges Chasms Diverse Choir Presents Classical & Jazz Music By John Kinga
T
he Dar Choral Society is not just about singing classical music in Tanzania! It is about sharing our love of music by making it a bridge between all countries and religions. Originally founded in the 1940s by the European community in Dar es Salaam, the Dar Choral Society was revived in 2009 to become a very diverse choir including many Tanzanian singers. The group is without a doubt one of the highlights of the classical music choral performance arena in Tanzania. With its long heritage of over 70 years of performance in Tanzania, the Choir is showing all the signs of becoming a welldisciplined modern choir ushering in a new era of classical music in Tanzania.

“The Dar Choral Society held a classical music and jazz concert in the Kivukoni Ballroom at Serena Hotel on November 23rd. This concert marks the eighth time that the choir has performed with an orchestra and is one of the major concerts that the Dar Choral Society hosts trice a year, generally in March, May and November.� Covering works by Hon. Ambassador Masaki Okada for the amazing violin with Saint Saens, Strauss, Vivaldi, and Mozart, the group continued their tradition of excellence as young and energetic Hekima Raymond (Tanzania) conducted a whole choir and full orchestra of talented professional and amateur musicians.

The Orchestra managed by the choir is made up of members of the expatriate community, Tanzanians and diplomats serving the Tanzanian nation in various disciplines, hence its nickname – the ‘Choir of the World in Dar’. The long-term goal of the Dar Choral Society is to combine the beauty of music using choral works and orchestra. It aims at promoting classical music to thousands of Tanzanians through concerts and recordings of music in multiple languages, including Kiswahili.
“The Society also aims to educate the public in the “art and science” of music through their concert series, enabling people of all ages to participate in this high quality cultural activity. Their objectives also include developing the Tanzanian arts infrastructure and providing meaningful experiences through engagement with music.” The group holds their rehearsals on Wednesdays and Fridays from 6:30-8:00 PM at Lady Chesham Nursery School. The atmosphere in Arusha National Park is magical. The entrance gate leads into shadowy montane forest inhabited by inquisitive blue monkeys and colourful turacos and trogons – the only place on the northern safari circuit where the acrobatic black-andwhite colobus monkey is easily seen. In the middle of the forest stands the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater, whose steep, rocky cliffs dotted with herds of buffalo and warthog. Further north, rolling grassy hills enclose the tranquil beauty of the Momela Lakes, each one a different hue of green or blue. Their shallows sometimes tinged pink with thousands of a rich selection of resident and migrant waterfowl, and shaggy waterbucks display their large lyre-shaped horns on the watery fringes. Mt Kilimanjaro
Above the gently rolling hills and plateau of northern Tanzania rise the snowy peaks of Mt Kilimanjaro,

its slopes and glaciers shimmering above the rising clouds. Kilimanjaro is located near the rising clouds. Kilimanjaro is located near the town of Moshi and is a protected area, carefully regulated for climbers to enjoy without leaving a trace of their presence.
