Kilimanjaro Marathon Marks 16th Anniversary

A true international marathon By John Addison

The Kili Marathon started as a simple idea formed by event organizers, Wild Frontiers in 2002, over a cold Kilimanjaro Lager. It developed as a great way to draw tourism in to Kilimanjaro – an iconic name and place for a marathon, using sport and a new marketing idea to attract runners to Tanzania, who would then climb the mountain, or go on safari after running the race.

A

year after generating some marketing on a tiny budget, attracted a mix of a few ‘international’ runners coupled with local interest – and ended up with a field of about 300 – 400 runners in total who enjoyed the race. Back in 2003, the local interest from villagers was piqued and they came out to see what was going on in their quiet town so early on a Sunday morning. Children followed some of the athletes, there were goats on the side of the roads, part of the course was on dirt, but generally most people went about their morning activities – like any other Sunday. 16 I Dar Life I February 2017

The inaugural race was a full 42km and half marathon distance and timekeeping was done manually with stop-watches which was quite easy with a small group of runners. Today, the roads are brimming full with athletes – shoulder to shoulder at the start, as they pit for top honors. The event now has, in addition to the full and half, a hugely popular 5km Fun Run. Over the years, our main sponsor Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, together with other sponsors have helped us turn this tiny event into a monster. Thee sponsors have to

claim a large part of the credit for this success. The race serves to test Tanzania’s upcoming top athletes, with world-class times being posted by these talented runners – as well as getting close to 9000 runners over various distances, enjoying the morning out.

The 2018 event marks the 16th year and this year we expect over 10,000 plus runners in the various events, with approximately 20,000 spectators on route and in the stadium. All this is attributed to the commitment from sponsors and other stakeholders who have closely been working with us to put together the event,” says Wild Frontiers Managing Director, John Addison who is the founder and main organizer of the event.

As well as being a great breeding ground for the local talent, the event draws quality runners from neighboring countries, and from around the world – with up to 40 nationalities attending the event. Apart from the sports element, the event has a big pay off in the region, with sponsors building their CSR around the event and the economic benefits to the country and the region are huge. There is also a change of lifestyle across the country with many more people taking up running, to keep healthy and socialize. HIGHTLIGHTS OF THE WAKATI ALBUM LAUNCH TO SUPPORT CHARITABLE FUNDRAISER FOR THE RENOWNED VISUAL ARTIST AUGUSTINO MALABA – WHO IS ONE OF THE OLDEST MAKONDE MASTERS By Isack Peter Abeneko

T

he official launch of WAKATI album at Geothe Institut was a charitable fundraising event to support the renowned visual artist – Augustino Malaba – who is one of the oldest Makonde masters. During his life, Malaba has produced amazing artwork and contributed to the cultural development and creative industries scene in Tanzania.

The word WAKATI means “time” in Kiswahili. The songs on this album portray the essence of daily life from for Tanzanians, with messages to encourage people to appreciate that time is precious and to live for the moment. We should not wait until the last tree has been cut down, before realizing the importance of the environment for our sustenance. We should not wait until loved ones are gone, before appreciating the loveliness of their presence. We should not wait until losing a job, before remembering how difficult it is to find another job. “Yesterday is the past, tomorrow is the future, but today is a gift that’s why it’s called the present.” You only get one chance to appreciate and that time is now, it is your time, it is my time - let us not wait until time has passed us by, only to discover what we have missed. This album was the result of a creative process, traversing the musical combinations of afro-pop, bongo-fusion, reggae, and other local styles. 22 I Dar Life I February 2017

“The album WAKATI would like to make a statement that we must take care of the older generation of artists and show our appreciation for their creative work. Therefore, proceeds from the sale of all CDs at this event, will go towards supporting his medical and living expenses.”

Having been one of the many old school folks that mourned the loss of Microsoft’s Trackball, I can honestly say this is a superior replacement. The day I had to bury my Microsoft Optical was a sad day when it died, but I got many years of use out of it. Up until now, it was the best trackball to date that I’ve used (and I’ve used them all), but today I received 2 of the new M570’s and replaced my wired TrackMan Wheels. They are slightly smaller than the TrackMan Wheel, but have a much better ergonomic feel. Unlike the Microsoft five button version where the fifth button was placed on the far right and was a bit awkward due to the size of the device, the M570 has it right above the perfectly placed back button.

The Denis Plassard Tour

Music & Dance by Compagnie Propos By Wema Kajo

C

horeographer Denis Plassard, in collaboration with Muda Africa, conducted amazing workshops and a contemporary dance performance with students from MUDA Africa. “Denis, who is originally from France, did his first performance in Tanzania at Alliance Française. He will also be travelling to Arusha and Zanzibar for his performances. After a professional ballet and contemporary dance training at the CNSMD in Lyon, Denis danced for 2 seasons with the Place Blanche Company, Josette Baïz. In 1990, he choreographed his own pieces which pushed him to create his first solo, “Propos”, which later gave its name to the company he founded the following year.” From his first steps as a choreographer, Denis tried to create dynamic bonds between texts and gesture and has explored the relationship between words and movement. Whether recorded, declaimed or sang, understandable or not, French words lie at the foundation of his work. His choreographic style, precise and tinged with drama, thrives on odds and is prone to humor. 36 I Dar Life I February 2017

Celebrating African culture and music “All Roads Lead to Zanzibar for East Africa’s Finest Music Festival” By Paul Owere

Now excitement and anticipation are rising fast for East Africa’s favourite music festival, Sauti za Busara as is gearing up to for its 15th annual event celebrating music from across Africa in Stone Town, Zanzibar from 8 – 11 February 2018.

S

auti za Busara means “sounds of wisdom” in Swahili, and the festival aims to provide visitors with an opportunity to explore a perspective in which music may be not only enjoyed but also used as a method to teach lessons in life. Traditional music is passed down orally, enjoyed on occasions such as religious ceremonies, birth of new-born, rites of passages, weddings and funerals. Beyond its entertaining function, music serves an even larger purpose to locals, as it promotes a sense of unity when going about their daily routines.

With an array of artistes and groups that represent Africa’s diversity this has so many times proved to be the stage where African stars show the world their true creative powers in an iconic setting that dates several centuries back.

The globally acclaimed extravaganza takes place at the Old Fort and Forodhani Gardens, hosting 46 exhilarating music performances bringing over 460 artistes on three different stages on four nights in February.”

Tanzanians and international visitors from all over the world look forward to an exciting and diverse line-up of highly talented musicians whose talents has been the talking point across Africa and beyond. As some have already labelled it, this could be the best line-up that Sauti za Busara has assembled in recent years mixing both the young and old, all sharing one objective as they stand ‘United in Music’. The groups that represent Africa’s diversity are from Algeria, Burundi, DRC, Egypt, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, , Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Taking off from where the 14th edition left off the list also features iconic sounds from Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar with 15 groups out to show the world the rich attributes of Tanzanian music. The local revellers are set to witness the rebirth of Tanzania songstress Saida Karoli who returned to music last year with a bang after several years off the stage. The groups include Kasai Allstars (DRC), Zakes Bantwini (South Africa),  Somi (Uganda / USA), Msafiri Zawose (Tanzania), Ribab Fusion (Morocco), Kidum & the Boda Boda Band (Burundi / Kenya), Mlimani Park Orchestra (Tanzania), Also on the rich list are Grace Matata (Tanzania), Mohamed Ilyas & Nyota Zameremeta (Zanzibar), Makadem (Kenya), Diana Samkange ‘MaNgwenya’ (Zimbabwe), Fatma Zidan (Egypt / Denmark), Inganzo Ngari (Rwanda). Others are Segere Original (Tanzania), Simangavole (Reunion), Maia & the Big Sky (Kenya), Kiltir February 2017 Dar Life I 39

(Reunion), El Dey (Algeria), Simbin Project (Senegal / Switzerland), CAC Fusion (Tanzania), Mbanaye (Malawi), Ernest Ikwanga (Malawi)and Isack Abeneko (Tanzania). Keeping in the true tradition of the Sauti Za Busara all the groups will perform live with the first performance taking place at Kisonge before the Carnival Parade sets off the proceedings for four days of great entertainment at the Mambo Club, Amphitheatre and at the Forodhani Gardens.

As Yusuf Mahmoud, Festival Director recently said, “Music is a universal language, through which the world sees Africa is positive; Africa is vibrant, Africa is rich in its many cultures and expressions. We need to build bridges of peace and unity across the world; what better way to do this than through the universal language of music?”

The festival will also hosts 'Movers & Shakers': a daily networking forum for local and visiting artists, managers, media and related professionals to meet and connect informally, exchange ideas and information. At the same time Busara Xtra is an umbrella for externally-organized events of cultural interest to visitors. These activities present further opportunities for local artists to showcase their work and encourage visitors to see other parts of the islands. Sauti za Busara offers half-price tickets for all visitors with African nationalities. Further discounts are available only for East African residents or Tanzanian citizens. Sauti za Busara festival 2018 is powered by Norwegian Embassy, Embassy of Switzerland to Tanzania and Zambia, Africalia, Mozeti, Zanlink, Zenj FM, Chuchu FM, Tifu TV, Dar Life, Ikala Zanzibar Stone Town Lodge, Emerson Zanzibar, Coastal Aviation, 2Tech Security, Embassy of Germany. The festival will shine the spotlight on local Swahili musicians and authentic Tanzanian pop and hiphop. The Importance of Healthy Relationships 3 Tips to Improve Your Relational Skills By Ann Gatty, Ph.D.

I

t is easy to feel isolated when life is challenging and you are struggling with stressful situations in your life. During times like these, you may want to withdraw from socializing with people and stay by yourself, away from others. You stay out of the public eye. But this is exactly the time when you need friends by your side!!

Having meaningful, sharing, healthy relationships help you maintain a positive outlook and helps you stave off feelings of depression, anxiety and anger. Sharing your feelings, concerns, hopes and challenges with others help you stay connected and helps you maintain a healthy level of healthy support and camaraderie. Having other people involved in your life when things are challenging helps provide you with alternative points of view that can help in objective decision making when you may feel that making any decision is too difficult. Friends are an essential part of life.”

How do you build and maintain healthy relationships? For a lot of us, the biggest stressors in our lives come from interactions with other people! People can make us mad and upset; they can hurt our feelings; they can let us down. So how can we eliminate the stressful conditions in relationships and develop healthy connections? Show Respect for Each Other’s Values and Points of View. The first thing about building a healthy and fulfilling relationship is that you accept people for who they are. Everyone has his/her own unique set of values, beliefs, interests and experiences, just like you. Rather than trying to persuade your friends to all agree with

46 I Dar Life I February 2017

Take Responsibility for Your Own Actions. While you cannot control other people’s actions, values and beliefs, you can control your own reactions to events, your attitude that you show toward others and the perspectives you develop from experiences. In relationships, you are always in control of yourself. You don’t have to let others control what you do, what you believe and how you feel. Healthy relationships are built on mutual respect and equality. Everyone has unique contributions that are valuable in friendships and relationships. Instead of finding fault in people, look for the positive contributions that they bring to your relationships.

Let Go of Unhealthy Relationships. There are times that you find your time consumed and your energy level zapped by relationships that are unfulfilling, harmful to your emotional wellbeing and detrimental to your psyche. If you find that a relationship is not healthy and you have not been able to develop an open and respective friendship, you may need to let it go. As you move through different phases of your life, personal needs change. Even though old connections may provide a certain comfort level, they may no longer provide a sense of sharing and support that is beneficial. Either stop completely, or limit the time you invest in any type of destructive relationship. If a relationship causes stress, anger, anxiety or depression, find ways to eliminate the involvement. Limit your time with the people who bring stress in your life. Use your energy and time in developing relationships that are positive. Healthy fulfilling relationships are necessary for our emotional and physical wellbeing. Stress can be reduced when we have people to confide in and friends to lend support in our lives. These relationships can be developed with friends at work, in volunteer activities, at churches or family members. It is not the quantity but the quality of friendships that matter. your point of view or change their value system, show a little curiosity. Be curious to find out why your friends believe what they do and how have their experiences shaped their perspectives. Don’t try to change people; learn from them. Accept differences as healthy ingredients for your friendships and relationships. Aila Accad points out in her book, 34 Instant Stress-Busters, “Agreement is not the basis for stress-free relationships. The basis for healthy relationships is respect, freedom, and value of each unique person for the other’s equal freedom and right to think, feel, make personal choices and take responsibility for them.”

Oysterbay Farmers Market Good food for good health By Valentina Reale

unded by the European Union (EU), the Oysterbay Farmers Market is an initiative to provide the Dar es Salaam urban community with high quality organic produce.

Local and natural were the two key words on February 27, 2018 at the Oysterbay Farmers’ Market, where vendors and organizations from all over Tanzania-Lushoto, Njombe, Morogoro, Tanga, and Zanzibar, gathered to sell their products and to show their food. We are what we eat so invest in good quality produce from the Oysterbay Farmers Market and become better versions of yourself.

Highlights of Rotary Zanzibar & Fumba Town Golf Day 2017 Raising Funds to Support Health & Education By The Rotary Club of Zanzibar Correspondent

T

he Rotary Club of Zanzibar with the support of Fumba Town Development and a wide range of other sponsors (and of course the golf players themselves) did magnificently. There were far more players from more countries, who enjoyed the refreshments and entertaining on the course, the Luxury Gift bags and expanded prizes awarded during the “19th Hole Dinner & Dance”. But most importantly even more money was raised for their elected NGO, Zanzibar Learning 4 Life Foundation. On the day, despite the short rains turning into ‘monsoon- like’ storms, the competitors showed their colors by playing through the rain in good spirits, knowing that their every shot was for an excellent cause. By doing so they proved themselves to be the real heroes of this fundraiser. Throughout the day we heard:

For the second year running, the Rotary Club of Zanzibar, Stone Town and Fumba Town Development hosted a premier golf competition at Sea Cliff Resort & Spa this time in aid of Zanzibar Learning for Life Foundation (ZL4L) . In 2016, the Golf event raised $16,500 for Makunduchi Hospital – and this has now been increased to a total of $80,000 through pledges received from the Rotary Foundation. For 2018 our aim was to go one better!

50 I Dar Life I February 2017

The success of the day is thanks to the sponsors who gave so generously. The Rotary Club of Zanzibar, Stone Town is very grateful for all their contributions and faith in our Club – without their loyal support and commitment, the event would not have been possible. “I am glad the event was a success and our teams are happy to be a part of this annual event. I look forward to the next event!”- Veer Patel - Director Motisun Group Sea Cliff Resort & Spa. The 19th Hole Dinner & Dance Prize-giving event is fast becoming a highlight on the Zanzibar social calendar. Sponsors,

in just two years, this competition has made its mark on the golfing communities in Tanzania and East Africa and raised well over $32,000 for charity. The Rotary Club of Zanzibar, Stone Town will once again use the funds raised to apply for a Global Grant with other international Rotary Clubs to treble or quadruple the amount of money available to this year’s chosen charity, Zanzibar Learning 4 Life Foundation. By augmenting the money raised through this process, the Rotary Foundation brings a far more significant benefit to the people of Zanzibar.

February 2017 Dar Life I 51

But let us not forget the reason why the Rotary Club of Zanzibar organized this Golf Day. The beneficiary for the Rotary Zanzibar & Fumba Town Golf Day 2017 is Zanzibar Learning 4 Life Foundation. ZL4LF is an NGO that helps young people transform what may seem to be impossible in their lives, into the achievable. They emphasize sustainable education, vocational training, communication excellence and the development of personal qualities. In particular, they focus on English language skills to improve the chances of success in school examinations, in finding work or setting up their own enterprises. There are currently 250 students taking courses in a house that was transformed into a learning center, classes take place both inside and outside the house that is also a home to orphans and young homeless individuals. A new school with more space and better facilities is being built to accommodate the growing number of students. The funds raised on the Golf Day will go towards furnishing the school and providing educational equipment and supplies that will be used to support the teachers, students and secure the future of ZL4LF. The Rotary Club of Zanzibar is proud to announce that they have set the date for the 2018 Charity Golf Day - September 15th 2018 - SAVE THE DATE! 52 I Dar Life I February 2017

players, their friends and family as well as members of the Zanzibar community attended it. The winners were plentiful as were the prizes. The amount, quality and selection of prizes so generously sponsored was a definite draw to the players. Human Papilomavirus Vaccine Intelligence & Care by Sali International Hospital Dr. Vincent Lamuka, Family Physician and Medical superintendent vaccine does not treat infections that might have occurred before you got the vaccine. Other types of high-risk HPV, which are not prevented by the vaccine, can also cause cervical cancer.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that causes cervical cancer and genital warts. HPV also causes cancers of the vulva and vagina in women, although these cancers are much less common than cervical cancer. In addition, it causes cancers of the anus and of the oral cavity and throat, in both men and women. Cervical cancer has emerged as the most common cancer in Tanzania – and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the country. Three vaccines (Gardasil, Gardasil-9, and Cervarix) are globally available to prevent infection with types of HPV known to cause cervical cancer. In Tanzania, Gardasil and Cervarix are available. It is clear that these vaccines significantly reduce the number of women who develop cervical pre-cancer. It is expected that this will result in substantial reduction in the number women who develop cervical cancer.

54 I Dar Life I February 2017

HPV vaccination is recommended for all girls and women who are between ages 9 and 26 years. HPV vaccination is recommended for boys and men who are between ages 9 and 21 years. It can be given up to 26 years of age if they are men who have sex with men or have infection with HIV.

One gets greatest protection from HPV if vaccinated BEFORE becoming sexually active. The vaccine does not help to get rid of HPV infection or any cervical abnormality after it has occurred. However, if you are less than 26 years old and you have been sexually active, had genital warts, a positive HPV test, or an abnormal Pap smear, you may still obtain some (albeit smaller) benefit from the HPV vaccine.”

Cervical cancer screening (Pap smear) is recommended to start at age 21. However, getting the HPV vaccine does not mean that you can skip cervical cancer screening in the future, since the

The HPV vaccine may cause mild redness, tenderness, or swelling near the injection site. There may be an increased risk of passing out after an injection of HPV vaccine, so it is a good idea not to stand up too soon after getting the vaccine. The vaccine is not currently recommended during pregnancy. Vast studies have not confirmed any major health risks of these vaccines. Most experts believe that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh its risks. The HPV vaccine is not 100 percent protective, but it is still highly effective. The HPV vaccine does not prevent other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, herpes, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. It is important to practice safer sex to reduce the risk of all STIs. This includes using a male or female condom with every sexual act. he East and Central’s Africa’s largest fashion event, Swahili Fashion Week and Awards celebrated 10 years of African fashion and the runway in 2017. The renowned Fashion week is certainly one of Africa’s top fashion events and continues to expand with each edition. 10 years of showcasing and promoting fashion from around the continent is certainly something to

celebrate. The recently held event also marks the significant growth of African fashion, textile and beauty industries which continue to flourish in most markets around the continent. Career Enhancement Tips For First Jobbers 3 Key Tips to Grow Your Career By Long Yun Siang

Like any other career enhancement tips, there are no guarantees for success. However, if you bring the right attitude and decide to take action then you are half way there. Nothing will stop a first jobber like you from shining at your workplace.”

Self-discipline

The value of self-discipline in a first jobber is often underestimated. Now that you are in the working world you think to yourself, “Is self-discipline overrated?” I will tell you, no. It is not overrated. I have often found new staff with good selfdiscipline doing better than those who are poor in it. Part of self-discipline is sacrifice. When you have strong selfdiscipline, it is inevitable that you would need to sacrifice some fun time to focus on your goals. If you are interested in advancing your career you may take some courses, or even read books 68 I Dar Life I February 2017

to increase your knowledge. All these activities come with an opportunity cost. It could very well mean less time for leisure activities.

Success

If you want to enhance your career, define what success is to you. Once you know what success is to you then you can plan towards that goal. Assuming you know what success is to you, the next step is to be single-minded in the pursuit of your goal. Being single-minded means to be focused on your goals. When you focus your energy on your goal, you get more out of your effort. Knowing your goal and your personal definition of success is an important element amongst these career enhancement tips for first jobbers. Equally important is to know your own strengths and your skills. If you want to enhance your career, play up on your strengths and improve on your skills required for your job.

Sincerity

Sincerity in your career means a lot of things. For me, as a first jobber you should look at doing your work sincerely and joyfully. Meaning, do not treat your work as a drag. If you feel that your work is a

drag, then start by asking yourself. Why is it so, before blaming anyone else – be it the company, your boss or your colleagues. So, be sincere with yourself. What is your core challenge in not being able to do your work sincerely? Being sincere at your work means doing it with your level best. It means playing your part and taking personal responsibility for your work. It also means to share your learning and knowledge. When you share what you know about a certain task, you become an asset to your unit and this inevitably enhances your career. In summary, the most important and practical career enhancement tips you can start now is – developing self-discipline, learning to sacrifice, define what success means to you, be single-minded in pursuit of your goals by knowing your strengths and skills, and doing your work with sincerity and have sharing as a work value you carry.

You found your first job and you feel a little anxious. You think to yourself – “How am I going to survive through all these?” With the right attitude and guidance, you will soon look forward to doing your best.

Starting a Business? Start With an Idea By Toni Nelson That’s the perfect place to start. What do you enjoy doing? This is where you need to get a pen and paper (or your tablet) out and put down the things you would like to do and are good at. This is extremely important because you need to be able to follow through.

For other people they dream of starting a business because they want to spend more time with their family. They see their children growing up before their eyes and feel that they are missing out on never to be repeated moments. Dreaming is one thing. Doing is another. Your first step is to start thinking about the type of business you want to start. Maybe you are an accountant and you want to branch out

72 I Dar Life I February 2017

on your own. For others it might not be that easy. They aren’t sure what business to start. All they know is that they want to enjoy what they do.

What do you need to do so that you go from dreaming to doing? First you need to have a plan. Sadly many have quit their jobs before they had the proper foundation. If you want to start a business you can do so while you are still employed. As a matter of fact in many ways it’s better to do that especially if you have financial obligations that need to be met.”

If you are the type to start a project and never finish it then starting a business might not be right for you. Once you get their feedback take a look at the areas you need to work on. The process of finding what type of business that’s right for you usually begins with a dream. Now take the steps to make that dream a reality.

F

or many the dream of starting a business begins from behind a desk at work. Perhaps they have just finished a project and feel that this could have been “their” project that they would reap all the benefits from.

Are you good at planning parties? That could lead you to a business as a planner. The question is what kind of planner? Do you want to plan corporate events? Weddings? You need to drill down and get very specific as to what you want your business to be. Take the list you have made of the possible businesses you could start and ask your family and friends what they think. These are the people who know you really well and can help you see things you don’t.

To love is to receive “ a glimpse of heavens -Karen Sundle-

T

he more we love, the deeper our understanding of life will be. In the midst of all of life’s challenges and complications, love stops us in our tracks and changes everything. The power of love is something we should celebrate every day, but Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to be reminded of how special the people we love truly are. In honor of this annual holiday, Dar Life brings to you some ideas for how to celebrate the occasion, whether you’re single, dating, or have been married for years. • Buy some roses – give them away or use them to freshen up your living space and remind yourself how much you are loved. • Make a homemade card for someone. • Take a weekend trip to Arusha, Zanzibar, Mwanza or Bagamoyo. If you can’t afford to travel, try a “stay-cation”. Book a hotel room in your city for a night or two, turn off your phone and laptop, and enjoy complete relaxation with your loved ones. • Have a classic movie date at the theater with friends and/or your partner. Or set up a drivein at home, complete with a projector and

snacks. • Look for restaurants with Valentine’s Day specials, get all dressed up, and enjoy a special dinner with friends or your partner. • Cook dinner for your partner or your friends at home. Go all out with a fancy outfit and festive music and decorations. • Go to a concert or take dance classes with loved ones. • Surprise someone you love with a gift that they really need or want. • Alone? Show yourself some love! Who says that people need a companion for this one day of the year? Treat yourself to a spa visit, a nice meal, or some new perfume. • On small pieces of paper, write down every kind of kiss that you can think of (examples: passionate, on the cheek, etc.). Then fill an inexpensive red felt bag with your “kisses” and give it to your partner. • Order food from a take-out restaurant and have a picnic for all the Valentines in your family on your living room floor. • If you are separated across the miles, send a care package filled with things that are red. • Say “I love you” a lot, and mean it!

Exploring Rivertrees “Country Inn” Down By The River, Amongst The Trees

By Delphine Minvielle

T

rue to all of the delightful images its name conjures up, Rivertrees is an idyllic haven, cool and quiet as the shaded waters that weave through it. Sunlight dapples the lush green lawns, birds chatter sweetly and the breeze swaying the tall branches sounds like the contented sigh of a lazy afternoon. Its history stretches back to the times when Tanzania was a British mandate, and colonial pioneers were exploring the potential of the abundant territory at their disposal. Carving farms out of fertile montane forest, Blackburn Estates tamed the land into rows of coffee picturesque enough that the Gehrken family – already under the spell of Africa through the course of many hunting trips and safaris – were further enchanted and, in 1961, made the riverside plantation their own.

In 1980 Martina, one of their seven children, moved out to the estate to make her home and raise her children. By the late 1990’s, the soil had proven too acidic for its crop and the coffee was uprooted to make way for the farm to enter a new chapter of its destiny, as a bed and breakfast. Martina converted the original rooms, sheds and the old factory into charming guest rooms, and began welcoming travellers from far and wide.”

As a result of her natural knack for hospitality and a keen culinary instinct, the establishment grew: with new investment came more cottages, a restaurant, and a swimming pool. Eventually, having nurtured the business from start-up to success, Martina handed over to a management team and turned her talent toward new projects. The inn comprises a range of accommodations including Garden Rooms, River Cottages, a sumptuous River House, and the original Farm House, which was Martina’s family abode. In addition, talented therapists offer much-appreciated massages for weary travellers and mountain-climbers, and the restaurant serves guests fresh tasty meals from its own gardens, incorporating many dishes based on Martina’s family recipes.

80 I Dar Life I February 2017

Contrasting its origins as a humble B&B to its current stature may make it sound comparatively crowded and busy, but in fact the opposite is true: the terrain spans ten lush acres, and the cottages are hidden discreetly among thickets of trees and vegetation, and around riverine bends. The spaciousness and foliage complement each other to maintain an aura of quiet and calm that seems to absorb any bustle and busyness, and permeates the serenity innate to such a natural space. Because it has been a much loved home for so many years, it has stayed effortlessly true to its origins. There are still family antiques adorning some of the rooms, including an HMV gramophone from the mid 1900’s, and paintings depicting times gone by. The cottages haven’t lost the personal touch and care that they were built with, and in many ways a stay here feels like visiting a long-lost relative’s house: it conjures a nostalgia belonging to a time and place not one’s own, and is yet relaxed and comfortable enough that it feels familiarly familial.

Residents special Valentine Offer

Book 2 nights & get complimentary dinner include 1 bottle of House wine on both evenings! A perfect place for Couples, friends & Family to rejuvenate a perfect holiday.

The friendliness of the staff, too, befits the cosy nature of the place, and is an instinctive extension of the attention to detail designed to make the most of its naturally warm and friendly ambiance.

Perhaps its understated style comes from the context of its location. Whilst the swarming safari circuit circles Arusha and Kilimanjaro, Rivertrees is tucked away out of town in the foothills of Kili’s lesser-known cousin, Mt Meru. A carefully curated catalogue of activities plays to the untapped riches of its surroundings: guests are encouraged to explore colourful village life and the smallholder farming projects that testify to the region’s coffee-growing prowess.”

A short meander up the road leads to Arusha National Park, a natural reserve that is frequently downplayed by the better-known Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara. But those that take the time to explore this gem are rewarded with sparkling flamingo-studded lakes, green groves that graze buffalo and zebra, and thick, lichened forests that lead the way up the blown-out crater, once a colossal peak that dwarfed the Roof of Africa. Bearing testament to the richness of the region, another close-by crater well worth seeking out is Lake Duluti. Cradled by flourishing woodland, this natural wonder yields the best of its abundant birdlife from the comfort of a canoe. Much like these understated treasures, Rivertrees is an example of still water that runs deep: an oasis of unpretentious natural charm that adds a timeless pause to a traveller’s journey, and a true home away from home.

By A Novel Idea

The Tiger’s Prey – by Wilbur Smith

The Malabar coast is full of dangers: greedy tradesmen, fearless pirates, and men full of vengeance. But for a Courtney, the greatest danger might just be his own family. Francis Courtney flees the comfort of his Devonshire estate when his stepfather’s gambling debts leave him penniless and at risk. He sails to South Africa with revenge and fortune on his mind: his uncle Tom Courtney killed his father, and Francis intends to avenge his death and make his fortune in the process. However, upon his arrival in Cape Town, he uncovers a truth that leaves him overwhelmed and disoriented. Christopher Courtney sets out to make his own way in the world, giving up his privileged position as the son of the Governor of Bombay. The perils and betrayals on his journey carve a fierce warrior out of him, but they also harden his soul and lead him to greater violence and treachery. As the lives of these two Courtney men intertwine, the sins of the fathers will forever alter the lives of a younger generation. The Tiger’s Prey takes readers on an epic journey from the southernmost point of Africa, through the perilous waters of the Arabian Sea, to the lush Indian coastline. It is an incredible and breathless tale of intrigue and family betrayal from one of the world’s greatest storytellers.

A Column of Fire – by Ken Follet The saga that has enthralled the millions of readers of The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End now continues with Ken Follett’s magnificent, gripping A Column of Fire. Christmas 1558, and young Ned Willard returns home to Kingsbridge to find his world has changed. The ancient stones of Kingsbridge Cathedral look down on a city torn by religious hatred. Europe is in turmoil as high principles clash bloodily with friendship, loyalty and love, and Ned soon finds himself on the opposite side from the girl he longs to marry, Margery Fitzgerald. Then Elizabeth Tudor becomes queen and all of Europe turns against England. The shrewd, determined young monarch sets up the country’s first secret service to give her early warning of assassination plots, rebellions and invasion plans. Elizabeth knows that alluring, headstrong Mary Queen of Scots lies in wait in Paris. Part of a brutally ambitious French family, Mary has been proclaimed the rightful ruler of England, with her own supporters scheming to get rid of the new queen. Over a turbulent halfcentury, the love between Ned and Margery seems doomed, as extremism sparks violence from Edinburgh to Geneva. With Elizabeth clinging precariously to her throne and her principles, protected by a small, dedicated group of resourceful spies and courageous secret agents, it becomes clear that the real enemies – then as now – are not the rival religions. How to Build A Car – by Adrian Newey

The world’s foremost designer in Formula One, Adrian Newey OBE is arguably one of Britain’s greatest engineers and this is his fascinating, powerful memoir. How to Build a Car explores the story of Adrian’s unrivalled 35-year career in Formula One through the prism of the cars he has designed, the drivers he has worked alongside and the races in which he’s been involved. A true engineering genius, even in adolescence Adrian’s thoughts naturally emerged in shape and form – he began sketching his own car designs at the age of 12 and took a welding course in his school summer holidays. Adrian has designed for the likes of Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill, David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, always with a shark-like purity of purpose: to make the car go faster. And while his career has been marked by unbelievable triumphs, there have also been deep tragedies; most notably Ayrton Senna’s death during his time at Williams in 1994. Beautifully illustrated with never-before-seen drawings, How to Build a Car encapsulates, through Adrian’s remarkable life story, precisely what makes Formula One so thrilling – its potential for the total synchronicity of man and machine, the perfect combination of style, efficiency and speed.

The Wild Beaut Paradise for Nature Lovers By Sara Maro

“If you have chosen the southern circuit for your adventure safari, then a visit to Tanzania’s fourth largest national park, Mikumi, is likely to be on your program. Four to five hours drive on comfortable roads will take you to this park which is known for hosting a wealth of Tanzania’s national animal, the giraffe.”

I

f you want to spend your holiday in a majestic natural area, the grand Mikumi National Park is the place to be. Established in 1964, Mikumi is the fourth largest national park in the world, enclosing an area of about 3230 square kilometers. Located south of Dar es Salaam right on the main Morogoro Iringa Highway, it is the first national park stop on the Tanzania southern circuit safari. The word Mikumi comes from a local word for Borassus

palm trees referred to as Mikuky. Mikumi was the name given to the villages created by a tribal chief of Wavindunda community with the name of Mtwahela Kikuwi (pronounced mm-twa-hhe-laa Kee-kuu-wee). Mikumi National Park has two main sections divided by the main road. The northwest section is where most guests undertake their wildlife and birdlife viewing expeditions made possible by

existing safari tracks. The Mkata flood plains aid the ecosystem by creating pools of water and therefore creating a sustainable environment for the plants and wildlife. The vegetations predominantly found are mixed grassland with acacia, baobab, sausage, tamarind and few small palms trees. Game driving further into the park or staying at the Foxes Tented Camp, itself lying on a hill, the majestic view of the Rubeho and Uluguru mountains can be seen, which

are part of the pre-Cambrian rocks formed over 600 million years ago. The southeast of Mikumi National Park is not conducive to the safari experience because of its underdeveloped infrastructure. Guests staying at the Vuma Hills Tented Camp can experience the rugged and wilderness experience from a geological and Vegetation perspective.

Visiting Mikumi National Park during the dry season can aid a safari experience by the fact that the dried up vegetation and the brown soil creates a superb hue during sunrises and sunsets. Why Visit Mikumi National Park during a Tanzania Safari? • First Park on the Southern Safari Circuit: Mikumi National Park is the first stop on the southern safari circuit, allowing guests an

enjoyable break with a wildlife viewing experience on route to Ruaha National Park. • Excellent Biodiversity: Mikumi offers the opportunity to view a diverse number of animals and birds in a short period of time without too much driving around. • Personalized Wildlife Watching: With relatively few numbers of people undertaking the southern February 2017 Dar Life I 89

What to do Game drives and guided walks are great options. Manu guests enjoy visiting the snake park in Mikumi village. Guests can also visit the nearby Udzungwa Mountains, or travel on for more wildlife safari in Selous or Ruaha. 90 I Dar Life I February 2017

Best Time to Visit Mikumi National Park’s dry season starts around mid-May lasting to mid-November, with patches of transition time between January and February when rains switch from the short to the long rains. Long rains start from around the middle of February tapering off by the middle of May. Getting there A good surfaced road connects Mikumi to Dar es Salaam via Morogoro, roughly a 4 hour drive. There are also road connections to Udzungwa, Ruaha and (dry season only) Selous. Charter flights are available from Dar es Salaam, Arusha or Selous and local buses run from Dar to park HQ where Tanzania Safari game drives can be arranged.

Mikumi Lodges & Camps • Foxes Safari Camp - Foxes Safari Camp is a small and personalized camp in Mikumi. It is set up on a rocky kopje on the Mkata flood plain, which presides over the best game viewing area of the park, the Mwanamboga Waterhole. • Vuma Hills Tented Camp - Vuma Hills Tented Camp is perched above the trees stretching over the seemingly endless wilderness southwest of Mikumi National Park. Mikumi National Park’s wonderful wildlife experience, along with its perfect location on route to Ruaha National Park, makes it a must-visit during a Tanzania safari.

safari circuit by road, Mikumi is one of the most undervisited parks in Tanzania. • Accommodation Fairly Priced: Accommodations in Mikumi National Park cater to all personalities and budgets, making it a mustvisit park for any person visiting Tanzania. • Unique Wildlife Experience: Safari guides often state that it is easier to spot a tree-climbing lion in Mikumi National Park than to spot one in Lake Manyara National Park.
