This is the largest street event in Zanzibar; a unique experience for performing artists, international visitors and the people of Zanzibar to be united in fun and celebration. It’s the only day of the year where even the Zanzibar police are sure to be smiling. The festival closes on Tuesday 12th, with a sizzling AfterParty finale, hosted by top African music DJs at Chaza Nightclub, Ngalawa Beach Resort, from 4pm to 5am. The festival stimulates cultural tourism and brings a major boost for the Zanzibar economy. About twenty thousand people attend the event over the four days. International visitors attend regularly, from across Africa, Europe and beyond. The festival is also set to highlight on the evils of corruption as a vice that continues to deny young people their rights, especially the female musicians. 30 I Dar Life I FEBRUARY 2019

“Corruption is a parasite, eating away at the moral fabric of our society. Looking at the music industry around us, we ask ourselves why is it that artists have to bribe or even sleep with studio producers to record their music or even get airplay? Is this why there are so few women in the East African music industry?” Yusuf asked. He admitted that one festival alone cannot completely change society; however, he said the festival joins hands with like-minded partners, to promote dialogue, change attitudes and encourage action for good governance. He also said that through music and art there is a lot that communities can achieve, given the power they possess.

Tickets for Sauti za Busara 2019 are available with 50% discount for all African passport-holders and EAC Residents. Further concessions are offered for Tanzanians. The festival will shine the spotlight on local Swahili musicians and authentic Tanzanian pop and hip-hop. If you’ve never had the chance to attend the festival, come see what you’ve been missing!

season, from the selection of artists, to pricing of the tickets. Zanzibar will host music-lovers from all corners of the world, joining as one to celebrate a kaleidoscope of sounds, from Algeria to Zimbabwe, from Cape Town to Casablanca. According to him, this will once again put young and upcoming talents from the East African region in the spotlight. These include Wamwiduka Band from Mbeya Region and S Kide, who performs the youthful and energetic Singeli style that is purely Tanzanian and soon set to conquer the world.”

This year’s line-up includes Fid Q, Damian Soul, Mkubwa na Wanawe Crew, Stone Town Rockerz, Tausi Women’s Taarab, Rajab Suleiman & Kithara, Afrigo Band, Jackie Akello and Eli Maliki (Uganda), Fadhilee Itulya and Shamsi Music from Kenya. KILIMANJARO MARATHON MARKS 17TH ANNIVERSARY

THE PEOPLE’S RACE – 3RD MARCH By John Addison

THE KILI MARATHON STARTED AS A SIMPLE IDEA, FORMED BY EVENT ORGANIZERS, WILD FRONTIERS IN 2002, OVER A COLD KILIMANJARO LAGER. IT DEVELOPED AS A GREAT WAY TO DRAW TOURISM INTO KILIMANJARO – AN ICONIC NAME AND PLACE FOR A MARATHON, USING SPORT AND A NEW MARKETING IDEA TO ATTRACT RUNNERS TO TANZANIA, WHO WOULD THEN CLIMB THE MOUNTAIN, OR GO ON SAFARI AFTER RUNNING THE RACE.

36 I Dar Life I FEBRUARY 2019

A

year later, the event attracted a mix of international runners, coupled with local interest – and ended up with a field of about 300 – 400 runners in total who enjoyed the race. Back in 2003, the local interest from villagers was piqued and they came out to see what was going on in their quiet town, so early on a Sunday morning. Children followed some of the athletes, there were goats on the side of the roads, part of the course was on dirt, but generally most people went about their morning activities – like any other Sunday. The inaugural race was a 42 km full marathon and a 21 km half marathon. Distance and timekeeping was done manually with stop-watches, which was quite easy with a small group of runners. Today, the roads are brimming with athletes – shoulder to shoulder at the

start, as they compete for top honors. The event now has, in addition to the full and half, a hugely popular 5 km Fun Run. “For the first time, we have launched a theme and a poster campaign to advertise the Kilimanjaro Marathon and its associated events. The 2019 event marks the 17th year and this year we expect over 10,000 plus runners in the various events, with approximately 20,000 spectators on route and in the stadium. All this is attributed to the commitment from sponsors and other stakeholders who have been working with us to put together the event, says Wild Frontiers’ Managing Director, John Addison, who is the founder and main organizer of the event.” We asked various participants, stakeholders and sponsors, what they thought best described and

encapsulated the events ethos and ‘The people’s race’ was the general consensus. According to Pamela Kikuli, whose brand sponsors the 42 km race “This sums up the unifying nature of the Kili Marathon, its associated events and what it means to all be involved in it.” She said this year’s prizes total Tsh 20 million with the first male and female receiving Tsh 4 million each while there is an additional Tsh 5 million to encourage Tanzanians to run faster where the first Tanzanian male and female will receive Tsh 1.5 million each while those who come second will receive Tsh 1 million each. On his part, the Tigo Head of Marketing, William Mpinga said “Tigo is proud to be the main sponsor of the illustrious Tigo Kili Half Marathon for the fourth year running. As the market leader in digital lifestyle FEBRUARY 2019 Dar Life I 37

The Grand Malt Brand Manager, Silvanus Mazula, called on participants to register on time for the Fun Run as it has attracted lots of participants over the years and become one of the favourite races as it includes runners of different ages, including children. Addison says this year’s sponsors who made it happen include, Kilimanjaro Premium Lager-42 km, Tigo 21km, Grand Malt-5km Fun Run. Others sponsors include KK Security, TPC Limited, Barclays, Kibo Palace, Kilimanjaro Water, CMC Automobiles, Simba Cement, Keys Hotel , Precision Air and AAR Healthcare. “We also thank the Ministry for Information, Culture, Artistes and Sports, Athletics Tanzania, national coordinators - Executive 38 I Dar Life I FEBRUARY 2019

THERE IS ALREADY A LOT OF BUZZ ALL OVER AS THIS YEAR’S EVENT IS PREREGISTRATION ONLY, WITH ENTRIES CLOSING ON THE 7TH OF FEBRUARY OR WHEN WE REACH CAPACITY. Addison finished by saying, “Once again the event has had massive interest from international runners too, coming from all over the world. BARAZANI MULTICULTURAL NIGHT

A BIMONTHLY EVENT THAT EMBRACED TANZANIAN UNIQUE TALENTS By Detricia Pamba

BARAZANI IS A BIMONTHLY EVENT THAT LET’S YOU ENJOY MUSIC FROM DIFFERENT ARTISTS. IN EACH CONCERT, THE ARTISTS CHANGE, MAKING IT NOT ONLY A GOOD PLATFORM FOR ARTISTS, BUT ALSO A GOOD PLACE FOR THE AUDIENCE TO ENJOY A VARIETY OF GOOD MUSIC. THIS MONTH, THE EVENT WAS HELD ON 16TH AT ALLIANCE FRANCAISE IN DAR ES SALAAM, WITH IT’S STAGE GRACED BY TRADITIONAL BANDS FROM TANZANIA MAINLAND AND ZANZIBAR.”

lliance Francaise de Dar es Salaam once again witnessed the unique African touch and rhythm from traditional artists on an event that marked the beginning of another wonderful series of BARAZANI. The event that was welcomed back with a warmly but excited crowd, awed people with high standard dances and music performances that made it to be a night to remember.

Not only were some of these traditional dances exciting and thrilling, they reminded us of where we belong and the prideful joy of being an African. Musical concerts and events seem uninteresting without a taste of traditional dances and Barazani, offered it’s audience just that with performances from Sisi Tambala and Dabo & Ashimba.

The event started with Sisi Tambala, a traditional group formed in 1997 and ever since, it has been receiving wide critical acclaim for their originality in reinterpreting traditional Tanzanian music and dance styles into their own ‘ngwashala’ style. The group performed an improvised traditional music and dance, blending their unique and lively shows with a variety of tribal FEBRUARY 2019 Dar Life I 43

he pace began to quicken as experimental musician, Hilary More, took to the stage in a top hat and wowed his audiences with his musical imitations of Tanzanian wildlife. Up next was Moyo Band, a group from Bagamoyo, led by the women of legendary musical lineage. Although their performance at Wikiendi was accompanied by prolific male artists, the strength and passion of these female artists was felt by the growing audience. Yuda Msaliti was the final act to take to the stage with singeli rhythms that demanded movement.

It was definitely a line up to remember. I will confess though, the most appealing part of the event for me was the visual art exhibition, called TABOO/ MWIKO, that offered attendees peaceful refuge in the Nafasi hall throughout the evening. The exhibition featured work by nineteen established and emerging visual artists including Masoud Kibwana, Aljosja and Misja Roels, Thobias Minzi, Guillem Gomis, Big Mama Mwandale, Lazaro Samuel,

THE NEXT WIKIENDI IS COMING UP ON THE 2ND OF FEBRUARY, FEATURING A MASSIVE LINE UP OF POETRY, LIVE MUSIC, DJS, AND A SPECIAL COLLABORATION BETWEEN INTERNATIONAL AND LOCAL ARTISTS SUPPORTED BY THE BRITISH COUNCIL. THIS EDITION, THE COLLECTIVE’S 15TH, WILL BE HELD IN COMMEMORATION OF THE LATE JACKIE SIMELA OF LOCAL MCHIRIKU GROUP, JAGWA, A TALENT LOST BUT FOREVER REMEMBERED FOR HIS ARTISTIC CONTRIBUTION TO TANZANIA.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO LOVE CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY IN A NEW WAY THIS YEAR By Karina Disuza

“BEING DEEPLY LOVED BY SOMEONE GIVES YOU STRENGTH, WHILE LOVING SOMEONE DEEPLY GIVES YOU COURAGE.” – LAO TZU The more we love, the deeper our understanding of life will be. In the midst of all of life’s challenges and complications, love stops us in our tracks and changes everything. The power of love is something we should celebrate every day, but Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to be reminded of how special the people we love truly are. In honor of this annual holiday, Dar Life brings to you some ideas for how to celebrate the occasion, whether you’re single, dating, or have been married for years. • • •

Buy some roses – give them away or use them to freshen up your living space and remind yourself how much you are loved. Make a homemade card for someone. Take a weekend trip to Arusha, Zanzibar, Mwanza or Bagamoyo. If you can’t afford to travel, try a “stay-cation”. Book a hotel room in your city for a night or two, turn off your phone and laptop, and enjoy complete relaxation with your loved ones. Have a classic movie date at the theater with friends and/or your partner. Or set up a drivein at home, complete with a projector and

snacks. Look for restaurants with Valentine’s Day specials, get all dressed up, and enjoy a special dinner with friends or your partner. Cook dinner for your partner or your friends at home. Go all out with a fancy outfit and festive music and decorations. Go to a concert or take dance classes with loved ones. Surprise someone you love with a gift that they really need or want. Alone? Show yourself some love! Who says that people need a companion for this one day of the year? Treat yourself to a spa visit, a nice meal, or some new perfume. On small pieces of paper, write down every kind of kiss that you can think of (examples: passionate, on the cheek, etc.). Then fill an inexpensive red felt bag with your “kisses” and give it to your partner. Order food from a take-out restaurant and have a picnic for all the Valentines in your family on your living room floor. If you are separated across the miles, send a care package filled with things that are red. Say “I love you” a lot, and mean it!

BALANCING BETWEEN YOUR WORK AND YOUR LIFE

5 tricks to improve your work-life balance By Sammi Caramela WORK IS AN EXPECTED SOCIETAL NORM: GO TO SCHOOL, GET A JOB. BUT YOUR CAREER DOESN’T HAVE TO BE SO STRICT AND RESTRAINING. WORK ISN’T JUST A WAY TO MAKE MONEY; IT SHOULD SERVE YOU BOTH FINANCIALLY AND EMOTIONALLY.

While work might be demanding at times, it should never become a priority over your wellbeing. You need time and energy for your hobbies and interests, for your family and loved ones. Don’t spend eight hours a day working just to come home and neglect the things that keep your spirits high and passion fresh.

time and energy to pursue your hobbies or relax on the couch with your loved ones. Balance is achieved over time, not each day.

don’t dread getting out of bed every single morning. Choose a job that you’re so passionate about you’d do it for free.

PRIORITIZE YOUR HEALTH Your overall health should be your main concern. If you’ve been struggling with anxiety or depression and think therapy would benefit you, fit those sessions into your schedule, even if you have to leave work early or ditch your evening spin class. If you’re suffering from a chronic disease, don’t be afraid to call in on rough days. You’ll only prevent yourself from getting better, possibly causing you to take more days off in the future.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO UNPLUG We live in a connected world that never sleeps. Cutting ties with the outside world from time to time allows us to recover from weekly stress and gives us space for other thoughts and ideas emerge. When you are always on, you don’t allow other things to surface that might be more important. Sometimes, truly unplugging means taking a vacation and shutting work completely off for a while.

MAKE SURE YOU LIKE YOUR JOB If you hate what you do, you aren’t going to be happy, plain and simple. You don’t need to love every aspect of your job, but it needs to be exciting enough that you

MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF While your job is important, it shouldn’t be your entire life. You were an individual before taking this position, and you should prioritize the activities or hobbies that made you happy. Whether you take a walk in the park, get a massage or [take] a hot bath, it’s important to always set aside an hour a week to do something for yourself. Additionally, you should focus on surrounding yourself with loved ones rather than making excuses to be alone all week. Just because work keeps you busy doesn’t mean that you should neglect personal relationships.

Here are five tricks to improve your work-life balance; KNOW THAT THERE IS NO ‘PERFECT’ BALANCE When you hear “work-life balance,” you probably imagine waking up easily at 5 a.m., hitting the gym, grabbing your meal-prepped lunch and heading off to work, just to come home early, cook dinner, do some chores, and wind down with a nice book in bed by 9 p.m. But that’s often not the case. Don’t strive for the perfect schedule; strive for a realistic one. Some days, you might focus more on work, while others you might have more

were 20 or 30 or 40, It may be beneficial starting a business at an old age— all the wisdom you gained from your many mentors in your corporate life will give you the solid building blocks to have the confidence, problem-solving skills and professionalism necessary to navigate through all the daily challenges of owning your own business. Utilize the wisdom and skills you’ve acquired during your lifetime to blossom your business. GET FUNDING It may be easier for more “mature” folks to have the financial resources to start a business later in life. Some have had the opportunity to save over the years or leverage retirement savings for funding their business. You may also be able to have business partners helping with their capital contributions, as well as some money from your retirement account or loan to the business. You will later be able to pay yourself back with interest as your business grows. Also, everyone needs to be aware of what they

LEVERAGE CONNECTIONS Don’t be afraid to leverage the connections you have made, both personally and professionally. There are many people — in particular, other small business owners — who know what challenges you face. Ask them: Do they know the best way to advertise your brand? Who are the best contractors to hire? Does their business need someone to provide what your business offers? (e.g., cater lunches?) Are there locations to rent available near their businesses where you could open a store or further expand your business? Leverage friends and family for help, whether it’s running to the store for you, helping with posting to social media or finding a good contractor for you. If someone is good with bookkeeping, spreadsheets or typing up letters — recruit them! “ If you really want to start a business, don’t let age be a factor in setting you back. As long as you are determined and ready to take on a challenge, you can do wonders and create a prosperous business. In fact, you have all the time in the world”

are getting into. Starting a business is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. If you’re going to make the leap, know that you will work hard and have to make sacrifices financially (at the beginning) and might not have much of a personal life, due to the time commitment of running a business.

AFRICA’S CHILD (VOLUME 1): BY MARIA NHAMBU

Africa’s Child is an unforgettable and searingly personal book. In the face of repeated obstacles and injustices, Nhambu continued to analyze the world around her with wit and a sharp sense of humor. Above all, as a very young child she decided one day that even if there was no other person in the world who loved and wanted her, she was going to love and care for herself—and that decision changed the course of her life. Africa’s Child is the story of a mixed-race girl growing up in the Usambara Mountains of Tanzania, East Africa. Raised in an orphanage with no knowledge of her origins or family, she endured abandonment, hardships, severe illnesses, and bullying. Her experiences as a child and teenager included physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, social stigma, and racial discrimination. Yet Nhambu tells her inspiring story with warmth and humor. Her questioning mind probes the African tribal realities and multi-cultural complexities that impacted her life both at the orphanage and schools run by German nuns, as well as at an African high school with American nuns. Nhambu not only survived her childhood but triumphed. Her faith and resilience, along with a belief in learning and her tenacious pursuit of an education, sustained her through many challenges. Dance, especially African tribal dance, became the way she healed and nourished her spirit. Through the love and commitment of an American teacher she met in Africa, Nhambu was able to pursue her dream of education and a new life for herself. The first book in her three-part memoir ends as she is leaving Africa for university studies in America on a full scholarship. Maria Nhambu is the creator of Aerobics With Soul®, a fitness workout based on African dance.

AMERICA’S DAUGHTER (VOLUME 2): BY MARIA NHAMBU

DRUM BEATS , HEART BEATS (VOLUME 3): BY MARIA NHAMBU In this final volume of The Dancing Soul Trilogy, we join an ever insightful and passionate Nhambu as she traverses diverse cultures and continents and negotiates a complex and shifting web of mixed identities—African immigrant and African American—through marriage, parenthood, and the search for the father she has never known. Through trauma and triumph, love and betrayal, the “Drum Beats” and “Heart Beats” of her native Africa lead her on an ultimate journey of transcendence that will enthrall and inspire readers around the world.

In America’s Daughter, the second book of the trilogy, the author arrives in the United States in the company of Catherine Murray, an American high-school teacher. Her adjustment to a new culture includes shocking doses of American-style racial discrimination and Nhambu’s discovery that she must learn to be a Black American. She graduates from college, thus fulfilling her dream of becoming a teacher, and teaches high school in the inner city. She marries, has two children, and establishes herself in the American way of life. Then a visit to Africa, and especially to Tanzania, reawakens the drumbeats and dancing that she carries in her soul. On her return home, she teaches Swahili and African Studies, performs African dance at schools, and creates Aerobics With Soul®, a fitness workout based on African dance. She both finds and creates the family she longed for as a child and connects with her unknown background. The first book of the trilogy, Africa’s Child, was released in 2016. The final book of her memoir series—Drum Beats, Heart Beats—reveals more of Nhambu’s life as she searches for her father.

aadani National Park is Tanzania’s youngest national park, Located in the centre of the historic triangle of Bagamoyo, Pangani and Zanzibar, Saadani National Park covering 1150 square km in the east of the country, north of Dar es Salaam. It is the only wildlife sanctuary in Tanzania bordering the sea. The climate is coastal, hot and humid. It offers a unique combination of both marine and mainland flora and fauna in a culturally fascinating setting. About 30 species of larger mammals are present as well as numerous reptiles and birds. Besides many species of fish, Green turtles, Humpback whales (nyangumi) and dolphins (pomboo) also 82 I Dar Life I FEBRUARY 2019

Gazetted in 2005, it encompasses a preserved ecosystem including the former Saadani game reserve, the former Mkwaja ranch area, the Wami River as well as the Zaraninge Forest. Many villages exist around the boundaries of the Park. In 1969, when Saadani Game Reserve was officially created, Saadani village elders were consulted and the loss of cultivated land was compensated for. Before being included in the national park, the Zaraninge Forest was managed by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) whose goal was to preserve the extremely high botanical diversity of one of the last coastal rain forests remaining

in Tanzania. The Mkwaja area is the reminder of a large cattle ranch which has been run from 1952 to 2000. The presence of many dams and paddocks attest to the former existence of the ranch.

The entire eastern boundary of the park is set along the Indian Ocean where white beaches stretch to the horizon in both directions, and sand islands off-shore provide snorkelling and swimming. Saadani proudly boasts Africa’s big four with Rhino the only illusive element. Surprisingly, a wide range of grazers and primates are seen on Saadani safaris or walks, among them giraffe, buffalo, warthog, common waterbuck, reedbuck, hartebeest, wildebeest, red duiker, greater kudu, eland, sable antelope, yellow baboon and vervet monkey. Herds of up to 30 elephants are encountered with increasing frequency, and several lion

prides are resident, together with leopard, spotted hyena and black-backed jackal. Boat trips on the mangrovelined Wami River come with a high chance of sighting hippos, crocodiles and a selection of marine and riverine birds, including the mangrove kingfisher and lesser flamingo, while the beaches form one of the last major green turtle breeding sites on mainland Tanzania. The Wami River, which passes through Saadani and empties into the Indian Ocean, hosts a large population of hippos, crocodiles, flamingos, and many large bird species. Elephants are often viewed bathing and playing on Saadani’s beach, especially in the early hours of the morning.

BIRDING IN SAADANI NATIONAL PARKS

Saadani is located in a privileged position; coastline is flanked by endless native vegetation. Towards the south of the park the Wami River provides the boundary line and source to bountiful fresh water. In the hills lies one of the last remaining lowland coastal forests left in Africa, Zaraninge. All of these elements combine to provide Saadani’s native and migratory birds a sumptuous and unique backdrop in which to dwell in. As such the National Park and surrounding areas is blessed with a huge array of bird life, ranging from the commonly viewed to the exotic and rare: Fish eagle, Black kite, Cuckoo Hawk, Lanner falcon, lesser kestrel, Purple heron, BrownFEBRUARY 2019 Dar Life I 83
