AFRICA WILDLIFE AND NATURE CONSERVATION ICON PASSES AWAY

NEWLY-ESTABLISHED “SERENGETI OF SOUTHERN TANZANIA

From Germany to Africa, Professor Dr. Markus Borner spent about 4 decades working on wildlife conservation and nature in Tanzania, East Africa, and the rest of Africa. A report from Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) confirmed that the famous German conservationist passed away on January 10,2020 leaving behind an everlasting legend on wildlife conservationin Africa where he dedicated almost half of his life working for the survival of wild animals and the protection of nature. Prof. Dr. Borner spent much of his lifetime in the Serengeti in Tanzania, far from his ancestral home, the Federal Republic of Germany. Serengeti National Park in northern Tanzania was Markus Borner’s true home. Dar Life passes its sincere condolences to family, friends and those who are touched by his death. May his soul Rest In Peace.

It is no wonder that traversing through the legendary and mighty Nyerere National Park is a lifelong and memorable event for photographic safari tourists. This newly-established national park could be referred as the Serengeti of Southern Tanzania by its wildlife concentration; most interesting as well, the most wild or wildest animals not found in any other park in Eastern and Southern Africa. Nyerere National Park remains a best place to visit for journalists, travel writers, and photographic safari makers. Nyerere National Park was hived off from the Selous Game Reserve, famed as the largest wildlife conservation tourist safari park in East Africa.

Valentine DREAM WITHOUT FEAR LOVE WITHOUT LIMITS

Celebrate Valentine’s Day in a New Way this Year By Karina Disuza

“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” ― Lao Tzu

22 I Dar Life I FEBRUARY 2020

The more we love, the deeper our understanding of life will be. In the midst of all of life’s challenges and complications, love stops us in our tracks and changes everything. The power of love is something we should celebrate every day, but Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to be reminded of how special the people we love truly are. In honor of this annual holiday, Dar Life brings to you some ideas for how to celebrate the occasion, whether you’re single, dating, or have been married for years.

• Buy some roses – give them away or use them to freshen up your living space and remind yourself how much you are loved. • Make a homemade card for someone. • Take a weekend trip to Arusha, Zanzibar, Mwanza or Bagamoyo. If you can’t afford to travel, try a “stay-cation”. Book a hotel room in your city for a night or two, turn off your phone and laptop, and enjoy complete relaxation with your loved ones. • Have a classic movie date at the theater with friends and/or your partner. Or set up a drive-in at home, complete with a projector and snacks. • Look for restaurants with Valentine’s Day specials, get all dressed up, and enjoy a special dinner with friends or your partner. • Cook dinner for your partner or your friends at home. Go all out with a fancy outfit and festive music and decorations. • Go to a concert or take dance classes with loved ones. • Surprise someone you love with a gift that they really need or want. • Alone? Show yourself some love! Who says that people need a companion for this one day of the year? Treat yourself to a spa visit, a nice meal, or some new perfume. • On small pieces of paper, write down every kind of kiss that you can think of (examples: passionate, on the cheek, etc.). Then fill an inexpensive red felt bag with your “kisses” and give it to your partner. • Order food from a take-out restaurant and have a picnic for all the Valentines in your family on your living room floor. • If you are separated across the miles, send a care package filled with things that are red. • Say “I love you” a lot, and mean it! The inn is a charming country estate that was once an old coffee farm, and still retains the nostalgic air of a well-loved homestead. Sprawling ten acres of fertile greenery, the grounds are a natural extension of Mt Meru’s sloping foothills, and offer a sanctuary for the birds and wildlife indigenous to the area.

S

WAYS TEMPORARY WORK CAN SKYROCKET YOUR CAREER

Five Hard-To-Ignore Advantages Of Working A Temporary Job By Kelly Kantrowitz

HERE ARE FIVE HARD-TOIGNORE ADVANTAGES OF WORKING A TEMPORARY JOB: 1. A CHANCE TO DIVERSIFY YOUR EXPERIENCE

Navigating the workplace as a temp employee allows you to experience different types of positions in a short time period. For recent grads, you can trial different work environments – from a large, brand-name corporation to a 30-employee firm. 2. AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR

Employers use temporary and contract workers for a number of reasons. Oftentimes, companies will allocate a completely separate budget toward

58 I Dar Life I FEBRUARY 2020

TEMPORARY WORK IS A GREAT WAY FOR UNEMPLOYED WORKERS TO RE-ENTER THE WORKFORCE. IT ALSO GIVES INDIVIDUALS WHO ROUTINELY CLAM UP DURING AN INTERVIEW OR CRINGE AT THE THOUGHT OF NETWORKING THE CHANCE TO SHOWCASE THEIR SKILLS FIRSTHAND ON THE JOB. AND LET’S NOT FORGET, CONTRACT POSITIONS CAN BE LUCRATIVE, WHICH WILL HELP YOU FATTEN UP THAT HUNGRY PIGGY BANK OF YOURS. 3. A WAY TO EXPAND YOUR PROFESSIONAL NETWORK

Industry-related conferences or professional groups are a great way to interact and build relationships with individuals in your field. But, you know what’s even better? The bonds you form while actually working alongside your co-workers. These relationships can be tremendously impactful to the future of your career,

as you’ll have a group of individuals who can personally attest to the value you deliver as an employee. 4. A MEANS FOR LIGHTING A FIRE UNDER YOUR BUM

Many of us have fallen victim to the unemployment slump. It happens to the best of us. Mustering up the drive to use your time productively can be difficult when you’ve become accustomed to a slower routine. However, you can reintroduce yourself to office life and shift your mentality to one that focuses on meaningful, proactive activities. Taking on temporary work in this scenario is a great way to get your productivity level back up while also reigniting your inspiration to start chasing those career goals again. 5. A TRANSITION TO A NEW CAREER PATH

Flexibility and greater autonomy are two of the main factors that drive career decisions for today’s modern job seeker. Many people decide to make contract work a permanent career choice as they crave control over their work schedule, find enjoyment in the freedom of exploring different work environments and projects, and like engaging with multiple employers.

GROWING AND NURTURING YOUR BUSINESS 5 Tips Every Entrepreneur Ought To Know By Forbes Writers

B

usinesses have no formula, but you can’t deny that there are some things that every entrepreneur should be keen about if they want to succeed in the long run. As hard and rough as the business road is, following these tips is crucial. HERE I BRING TO YOU 5 TIPS THAT EVERY ENTREPRENEUR OUGHT TO KNOW: 1. RESEARCH AND UNDERSTAND YOUR MARKET Take the time to do market research and really listen 64 I Dar Life I FEBRUARY 2020

2. REALLY LISTEN TO YOUR CLIENTS Truly listen and empathize with your clients. Everyone is so interested in getting their own personal message across, that no one pauses for a moment to actually listen and hear the root of the problem or pain. Believe in listening 80% of the time, clarifying 10% of the time, and responding wholeheartedly and intentionally, is the remaining 10% of the time. 3. LEARN WITH A TEAM Most leaders settle for learning by themselves. They read a book or attend a conference by themselves. Good leaders learn with the help of a mentor. A coach can come alongside a leader and help the leader see things from a different perspective. The best leaders learn with a team. An old proverb teaches that where there are many advisors, there is much success.

THE RIGHT APPROACH CAN MEAN A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE IN BUSINESS. PART OF SETTING UP A LONGTERM PLAN IS KNOWING WHERE THE PROBLEM SPOTS ARE, AS WELL AS WHICH BUSINESS PHILOSOPHIES WORK BETTER FOR WHICH INDUSTRIES. 4. FOCUS ON WHAT MAKES YOU THRIVE Be unapologetic and relentless with what makes you thrive. Many times, we are influenced from the outside world, and cloud our own desires for the sake of those around us. The sooner you are able to grasp this nugget, the sooner it will drastically change your world. 5. NETWORK WITH EXPERIENCED EXECS Take any opportunity to network and learn from more experienced executives, as well as to be mentored and coached by some of them. Further, exposure to specific meetings, boardroom discussion, and strategic planning would be utterly beneficial.

TELEMEDICINE SERVICES Powerful Healthcare Access

Telemedicine allows health care professionals to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients at a distance using telecommunications technology. The approach has been through a striking evolution in the last decade and it is becoming an increasingly important part of the Tanzania healthcare infrastructure.

How is telemedicine transforming health care? Through telemedicine, healthcare providers can remotely monitor patient data to identify potential problems. They can then quickly contact patients for a virtual consultation to recommend immediate treatment. Notably, early intervention leads to better care and significant savings.

elemedicine is the remote delivery of healthcare services, such as health assessments or consultations, over the telecommunications infrastructure. It allows healthcare providers to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients using common technology, such as video conferencing and smartphones, without the need for an inperson visit. How Telemedicine Works? During each appointment, the patient is accompanied by a specially trained medical assistant who acts as the specialist’s “hands,” using any medical equipment the specialist calls for to address the patient’s health. The patient can see and speak with the doctor—and the doctor can see and speak with the patient—just like an in-person check-up. The special equipment also has audio/ visual capabilities so that if the specialist must examine the patient’s body (looking into the ear, down the throat, etc.) the specialist can see what the equipment records. Appointment length varies, but many patients complete their session in about 20 minutes. Types of Telemedicine: There are numerous different ways that telemedicine services 72 I Dar Life I FEBRUARY 2020

can effectively be delivered to patients. Each of these delivery methods offers certain benefits and drawbacks. And providers need to carefully evaluate these pluses and minuses, and take into account their patient demographics, as well as other factors, and then determine what delivery method is preferred. Remote patient monitoring, also known as telemonitoring, allows patients with chronic diseases to be monitored in their homes with mobile medical devices that collect data about blood sugar levels, blood pressure or other vital signs. Remote caregivers can review the data instantly. Store-and-forward, also known as asynchronous telemedicine, lets providers share patient information, such as lab results, with a physician at another location. Interactive telemedicine allows physicians and patients to communicate in real time. Such sessions can be conducted in the patient’s home or in a nearby medical facility and include telephone conversations or the use of video conferencing software that complies with HIPAA regulations.

Benefits of telemedicine: Greater access to medical specialists for patients Friendly, convenient, high-quality medical consultations Reduced cost for patients Reduced burden on health care providers and medical facilities

What Is Required for Telemedicine? A telemedicine setup will require a few basic needs and some choices. You will need: 1) a secure internet connection (broadband), 2) a video platform, 3) technology support. The amount and speed of the internet connection will determine the video quality and amount and speed of data transfer. For more information on a Telemedicine Services, visit or call your nearest hospital.

Serengeti National P “

The Land of unique wildlife migration

The Serengeti National Park is a large national park in Tanzania. Serengeti comes from the Maasai word “Siring” meaning “Endless Plain”, which really means hundreds about Serengeti comes from its distinction of the ecosystem from the Serengeti National Park itself.”

S

erengeti is approximately 27,000 square kilometres..It covers 14,763 km² (5,700 square miles) of grassland plains and savanna as well as riverine forest and woodlands. The park lies in the north of the country, bordered to the north by the national Tanzania and Kenyan border, where it is continuous with the Masai Mara National Reserve. To the south-east of the park is Ngorongoro Conservation Area, to the southwest lies Maswa Game Reserve, and to the western borders are Ikorongo and Grumeti Loliondo Game Control Area. The Serengeti National Park is absolutely huge. If you are intent on viewing the Great Migration, then where you stay is as much dependant on the time of year you are

Serengeti National Park is undoubtedly the bestknown wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequalled for its

al Park travelling as it is the style of camp or hotel you are looking for. Get the location wrong and this park is so big that you will not see the herds. The Serengeti is, therefore, broadly divided into four distinct areas: the central Seronera Valley, the Western Corridor, the Northern Lobo and Kogatende areas, and The Center- Seronera Serengeti: In the heart of the national park, Seronera is a network of river valleys that ensure yearround water supplies and keep the region incredibly rich in wildlife throughout the year. Seronera has all the best features of the Serengeti and also, sadly, its worst. Scenically, it’s a lovely area – with open plains, occasional kopjes and lines of hills to add interest. The resident game here is phenomenal, with high densities of relaxed leopards, cheetahs and lions.

value. With more than two million wildebeests, half a million Thomson’s gazelle, and a quarter of a million zebra, it has the greatest concentration of plains game in Africa. The wildebeest and zebra, moreover, form the star cast of a unique spectacular annual Serengeti migration. These live off the resident herbivores, as well as the migrating game. The migration passes through here in April/May, but Seronera is within reach of both the Southern Plains and the Western Corridor – so from about November to June, it can be used as a base to see the migration. Western corridor: Stretching to the west, almost to Lake Victoria, the Serengeti narrows into what’s known as the Western Corridor. The key feature of this area is the two rivers, the Grumeti and the Mbalageti, which run almost parallel, each supporting a band of most, evergreen riparian forest. This area sustains a very good permanent game population, including plenty of zebras and wildebeests, all the predators and forest ‘specialists’ like colobus monkeys. The birdlife is particularly varied. The migration passes through between about May and July – pausing to gather

momentum before crossing the crocodilerich waters of the Grumeti River, into the Grumeti Reserve. Northern Serengeti: The landscape is dominated by open woodlands (predominantly Commiphora) and hills, ranging from Seronera in the South, to the Mara River in the limit with Kenya. Apart from the migratory wildebeest and zebra (which occur from July to August, and in November), the bushy savannah is and dik diks. Serengeti plains: The endless, almost treeless grassland of the south is the most emblematic scenery of the park. This is where the wildebeest breed, as they remain in the plains from December to May. Other hoofed animals- zebras, gazelles, impalas, hartebeests, topis, buffalos, and waterbucks - also occur in

huge numbers during the wet season. very common in the region, and they are great observation posts for predators, as well as a refuge for hyrax and pythons. Today, the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the Maasai Mara Game Reserve across the border in Kenya, protect the greatest and most varied collection of terrestrial wildlife on earth, and one of the last great migratory systems still intact. The Serengeti is the jewel in the crown of Tanzania’s protected areas, which altogether make up some 14% of the country’s land area, a conservation record that few other countries can match. History of Serengeti National Park For centuries, the vast wilderness of the Serengeti Plains remained virtually uninhabited but about hundred years ago the nomadic Maasai came down European to set foot in the area was the German explorer and naturalist Dr. Oscar Baumann, who passed by as an agent of the German Anti-Slavery Committee on his way to Burundi. He was followed by his compatriots who built Fort Ikoma in the north which was used as an administrative centre until it fell to the British in 1917. 1913. They found the wildlife plentiful, especially the lions, but saw no elephants. Seven years later, an American arrived in a strange new contraption known as a Ford motor-car and news of the wonders of the Serengeti had reached the outside world. Because the hunting of lions made them so scarce (they were considered ‘vermin’), it was decided to make a partial Game Reserve in the area in 1921 and a full one in 1929. With the growing awareness of the need for conservation, it was expanded and upgraded to a National Park in 1951. Eight years later the Ngorongoro Conservation Area was established in the south-east as a separate unit. In the open grass plains during the rainy months from November to May hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and Burchell’s zebra congregate. The area is the starting point for one of the great wonders of the world: the Serengeti annual migration. Towards the end of May when the grass becomes dry and exhausted, the wildebeests start to mass in huge armies. All is far from peaceful, for it is the rutting season and each male tries to establish a stamping ground. Eventually, after several dummy runs, the animals begin their trek in a column several miles long to the permanent waters in the north of the Park. After moving westwards, the migration divides by some uncanny

82 I Dar Life I FEBRUARY 2020

instinct, one group turning north-east and the other due north. Once started, little stops the stampede: hundreds often drown at a time in the broad Mara River in the north. This mass movement has a following of carnivores, always ready to dispose of the weaklings The River crossings happen at any time during this time of year, but are elusive, rapid and unforgettable experiences. The wildebeests are easily spooked by real or imagined threats. Patient waiting near a herd by the river may only produce a puff of dust as they turn on their heels and run away. Or maybe the herd is just not ready to cross the river and they are milling around contentedly. But if everything is right then, there is utter and extraordinary chaos as the herds struggle to get to the other side of a

Serengeti Landscape A unique combination of diverse habitats enables it to support more than 30 species of large harbivores and nearly 500 species of birds. Its landscape, originally formed by volcanic activity, has been sculptured by the concerted action of wind, rain and sun. It now varies from open grass plains in the south, savannah with scattered acacia trees in the centre, hilly, wooded grassland in the north, to extensive woodland and black clay plains to the west. Small rivers, lakes and swamps are scattered throughout. In the south-east rise the great volcanic massifs and craters of the Ngorongoro Highlands. Each area has its own particular atmosphere and wildlife. A spectacle park giving you as a visitor the most unique experience and adventure. Allow at least three days to make your visit a memory of a lifetime. Nature & wildlife Safari experience Tanzania’s oldest and most popular national park, also a world heritage site and recently proclaimed a 7th famous for its huge concentrations of wildlife, especially when some six million hooves pound the open plains, as more than 200,000 zebras and 300,000 Thomson’s gazelles join the wildebeests’ trek for fresh grazing. Yet even when the migration is quiet, the Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa: great herds of buffalos, smaller groups of elephants and giraffes, and thousands upon thousands of elands, topis, kongonis, impalas and Grant’s gazelles. The spectacle of predator versus prey dominates Tanzania’s greatest park. Golden-maned lion pride feast on the abundance of plain grazers. Solitary leopards haunt the

acacia trees lining the Seronera River, while a high density of cheetahs prowls the south-eastern plains. Almost uniquely, all three African jackal species occur here, alongside the spotted hyena and a host of more elusive small predators, ranging from the insectivorous aardwolf to the beautiful serval cat. The park also supports many further species, including cheetahs, Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles, topis, elands, waterbuck,s hyenas, baboons, impalas, African wild dogs and giraffes. The park also boasts about 500 bird species, including ostrichs, secretary birds, Kori bustards, crowned cranes and marabou storks. Migration in the Serengeti National Park The wildebeest migration, like a discernible thread, embraces and connects the Serengeti’s ecosystem much as it has done for at least two millions years. Every year, with some seasonally dictated variations in timing and scale, one million wildebeests leave the southern Serengeti’s short grass plains in search of the grass and water they need to survive. During their annual pilgrimage they will travel some 2.000 miles devouring 4.000 tonnes of grass a day. A quarter of a million will be born, many will die.

The participants: White bearded Wildebeests, Burchells Zebras and Thompson’s Gazelles The highlight of the Serengeti ecosystem, not found anywhere in the world, is the migration of the animals thus the reason to visit Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara National Reserve. The migration of animals consists of White Bearded Wildebeests, Burchells Zebra and Thomson’s gazelles. The migration begins by the wildebeests, gazelles and zebras’ own innate biological triggers determined to search for water and greener pastures. The migration attracts diverse species of predators, some being: Hyenas, Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, Crocodiles and Pythons etc. Over a million wildebeests begin their circumambulation of the Serengeti

Located in Tanzania, adjacent to Ngorongoro Conservation Area The Serengeti ecosystem includes 2 countries: Tanzania and Kenya In Kenya, the Serengeti ecosystem is renowned as Masai Mara National Reserve Serengeti National Park is 14,763 square kilometers First detailed research on the Serengeti ecosystem was undertaken by two German Nationals (father and son), Dr. Bernhard and Michael Grizmek. The details of their findings and stories on the Serengeti are documented in a book called “Serengeti Shall Not Die.” The Serengeti National Park has many rivers flowing through it, permanent and seasonal, including the Seronera River, Mara River, Grumeti River and Orangi River

Getting there By Plane - Scheduled and private charter flights are available from Arusha, Lake Manyara and Mwanza such as Auric Air, Flight link, Coastal Aviation & Safari Airlink. By Road – you can drive from Arusha, Lake Manyara, Tarangire or Ngorongoro Crater.

When to go The Serengeti is one of the very few places in Africa of which you can say the game viewing is outstanding at any time of year. April and May sees the heaviest rains but even then, the lodges are ridiculously good value and the park is quiet. We believe the very best time of year to be in the park is either from January to March which includes the spectacle of the Great Migration calving, or alternatively from the middle of July all the way to the middle of November when the herds are crossing the Mara river to or from Kenya.
