K

aribu Fair, owned by the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) promised to be bigger and better in 2015, starting with its rebranding as Karibu Travel Market Tanzania (TMT). TMT was held at the Magereza Ground, next to Arusha airport from 29th – 31st May 2015.

The outcome was beyond all expectations. The show attracted over 8000 visitors, showcasing East Africa as an elite tourism destination with over 200 exhibitors from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and as far as the USA, UK, Europe and China!” The stage has been set for the coming years and it is expected that the show will continue to grow in stature, attracting more regional and international attention. Already in the works are plans to attract more foreign buyers, which in turn will encourage more local exhibitors, including tour operators, to participate. This year, the Karibu Fair focused attention firmly on marketing East Africa as a single tourist destination, an initiative that, along with others, puts the show in an enviable and potentially enormously lucrative position. The major objective of

the fair is to raise the regional profile by promoting East African tourism to the global market and to bring all key industry players in East Africa together in one place, at one time. Ms. Devota K. Mdachi, TTB’s Director of Sales and Marketing, noted “Tanzania is very proud that the Karibu Fair, which started as a modest initiative, has evolved into a major travel industry showcase for all the East African destinations.“

“The travel fair has become “the place to meet” for the region’s travel industry partners from around the world. It has been boosting Tanzania’s tourism for the last 12 years and this year was no exception.” The opening day was set aside for the trade only, and serious business was reported by many exhibitors. The day ended with a world-class Karibu Corporate Cocktail party. The Karibu Travel and Tourism Fair continues to grow every year and exhibitors and visitors alike are excited about the prospect of improving the trade show with more visitors in the future. BET gives out regular trade information and offers consultancy services to producers, exporters and importers to enable them to effectively participate in the global marketplace. This year, exhibitors are selling a wide range of products – food and beverages, textiles, garments and yarns, manufactured products, information and communication technology, construction materials, automobiles, electrical goods and appliances, farm implements, chemicals and cosmetics, timber and furniture, trade services, engineering products, machinery, computer software, gifts and handicrafts. W

orld Music Day is annually celebrated around the globe as a day to take stock on how diverse forms of music have impacted lives and fostered a sense of unity amongst people. In Tanzania, annual celebrations are hosted by Alliance Française in Dar es Salaam. As Alliance Francaise’s Programs Coordinator, Abel Shuma, reminded Dar Life, World Music Day was launched on June 21, 1982 as part of an initiative by Jack Lang, the French Minister of Culture at the time.

“A decade later, the event has managed to spread throughout all five continents of the world. “More than 450 cities throughout the globe celebrated World Music Day last year. This grand and eccentric festival provides free entrance to both audiences and entertainers, in hope of promoting cultural interactions in the world of music,” Shuma stated.” July 2015 I Dar Life I 29

Festival

By Wema Kajo

The festival in Dar es Salaam officially kicked off after great performances by local artists, including the DCMA Young Stars from Zanzibar and the more traditional IFA band. The event also featured French rock band Rimo, which is known for luring audiences with the use of diverse instruments and striking voices. The star of the festival was Tanzania’s popular Ya Moto Band, which is made up of four jovial young lads who are passionate about music. Coordinator Shuma pointed out that the band is known primarily for their unique approach to live performance and their amazing dance moves, as evident in their song, Itakupwelepweta. Other pieces played by the band have been compared to work performed by renowned singers Diamond Platinumz and Ally Kiba, who are top-notch artists in the East African playing grounds.

The event was again organised and run by Umma wa Wapanda Baisikeli (UWABA) in conjunction with the European Union (EU) in Tanzania as part of the activities to celebrate the European Year for Development 2015. Several hundred cyclists of all ages cycled from 32 I Dar Life I July 2015

Alliance Française to Nafasi Art Space, via Ali Hassan Mwinyi Road, a distance of 10.7kms. This year Cycle Caravan’s theme was Peke ‘The Last Elephant’. Its name serves as a reminder that if poaching does not stop, Peke will be the last elephant remaining. “This Cycle Caravan commemorated the late Tim Manchester, an American who lived in Dar es Salaam and was killed by a speeding car near the Yacht Club while cycling, which he used as his main mode of transportation in the city. Countless other cyclists

have been killed or injured while cycling in Dar es Salaam, and thus a major goal of this event is to promote awareness and education to improve cycle safety. “ The guest of honour was the Minister for Information, Youth, Culture & Sports, Hon. Dr. Fenela Mukangara. As is customary after the caravan, there were raffle draws in which several participants won bikes, tricycles, and helmets. Participants need not register or pay any entrance fee – next year simply show up to ride or jog your way around the track!

“Established in 2010 by Tanzanian dancer and choreographer Isack Peter Abeneko, Haba na Haba Contemporary Dance Training Program aims to put on contemporary dance performances in both indoor and outdoor spaces in order to reach new audiences in the local community, increase the value of contemporary dance, and provide life skills, business and professional training to local dancers in Tanzania.”

ar es Salaam was privileged to again host Art for Social and Economic Development in Africa (ASEDEVA), collaborating with Lumumba Theatre Group in presenting the 4th annual Haba na Haba Contemporary Dance Training Program. ASEDEVA is well-established as a nonprofit organization working in Tanzania on behalf of the performing arts community and society as a whole, inspiring

Tanzanians to engage in social issues through creative work and discussion of that work. “‘Haba na haba’ means ‘little by little’ in Swahili, which reflects the hope of building up the contemporary dance scene in Tanzania in exactly that way. We hope to connect with people in the society through contemporary dance trainings and performances as part of a mission to advance the situation of contemporary

dance and contemporary dancers in Tanzania,” says Abeneko. While Haba na Haba Contemporary Dance 2015 sponsors hosted various workshops and seminars, life skills, and networking meetings at locations around the city such as Russian Tanzania Culture Centre, Alliance Francaise, Nanasi studio and VVF studio (TCC) for the entire 4 weeks of the month, the

While the weekend was packed with brilliant performances, one highlight was a performance by the Tanzania Haba na Haba creative productions choreographed by different invited international and national choreographers and dancers including: ‘’Matatizo’’ choreographed by T- Africa Dance Group, “Changamoto’’ choreographed

“The prestigious three-day Oryx Energies Rally that attracts drivers from across East Africa each year kicked off with a bang on June 12. The race, which counted for both national championship and continental titles, covered a total of 236 kilometres in the areas of Kisarawe, Chanika, Kisura, Kitanga, Kola, Kipangege, Soga, Sungwi, Kazimzumbwe and Mzenga around Dar es Salaam, including the famous Pugu Hills and the iconic Tazara Grounds.”

“In this year’s event, Miller was impressive from the opening leg as he took charge and left Jamil Hamidu Khan, a young driver from Dar es Salaam, in the dust. The victory substantially boosted Miller’s points in the national championship. The driver is expected to sparkle in his appearances in two more home legs of the Automobile Association of Tanzania in August and October this year.”

by Peter Fox in his Mitsubishi Evolution nine, comfortably cruised to the finish line at Southern Sun Hotel and took his valuable prize for the upcoming motorsport season. It was a very important victory for Miller, whose efforts to win the same event in the previous edition were halted by an untimely mechanical breakdown in Kisarawe. Placing second in the final standings was none other than Jamil Khan, who paired a Subaru Impreza with the best navigator in the country, Moses Matovu. The duo maintained their second spot finish since the end of the opening leg. Khan, who inherits his father’s Hamidu legacy, looks well set to challenge other drivers in this season’s national championship title contention. Placing third in the final standings was Ugandan Duncan Mubiru, who was navigated by George Semmakula in a Subaru Impreza. Unfortunately Mubiru and his codriver never registered for Africa Rally Championship points, as they would have garnered up to 25 points to boost their tally for the continental title. Mzizima wonder boy Dharam Pandya, who was the first on the starting grid when the event was flagged off last Saturday, came in fourth overall. Pandya, who was navigated by his uncle Sanjeev in a Mitsubishi Evolution, had an unimpressive start during the opening leg and failed to recover in the final leg. who won the national rallying title in 2012, had his national championship title race hopes dented as he was leading the pack of Tanzanian drivers ahead of the weekend event. Placing fifth in the event was Kilimanjaro Motor Sports Club’s ace Guljeet Dhani, who was using a Subaru Impreza under navigation by Shameer Yusuf from Kenya. Other top ten finishers in the event included Harinder Deere/ Zubeir Pirecha (Subaru Impreza), Gurpal Sandhu/Absalon Aswani (Mitsubishi Evolution X) , Rajpal Dhani/Sinder Siddle (Subaru Impreza), Kirit Pandya/Awadh Bafadhil (Subaru Legacy) and Faisal Nayani/Ratanveer Darbar (Subaru Impreza). A total of 17 cars finished the event, with the rest ending up as casualties. Oryx Energies Tanzania, Ltd. has been supporting this rally for two years now and looks forward to their third consecutive backing next year. Additional sponsors included Utrack, Southern Sun Hotel, Radio Wave, Red ‘n White, Knight Support, NIC, Epidor, Obi, Hp and Db Shapriya.

CAREER

Thinking of Changing Careers? How to Get Started By Ford R. Myers - President, Career Potential, LLC

“Changing careers is a big decision, so it’s wise to pursue this sort of deliberate, logical process – as opposed to just jumping impulsively from one career to another.” Make your “initial cut” by sitting-down and writing-out a list of possible careers or jobs that are a realistic fit with what you’ve learned about yourself. Then brainstorm some related options, perhaps with the help of a relative, close friend or counselor. Make sure the careers you list are ones that you feel genuinely attracted to. Get “market feedback” from former colleagues, associates and professionals who are in a position to know both your skills and the requirements of your targeted industry. Researching Careers, Job Categories and Titles The next step is to research what’s required to enter that field. There are many great resources 50 I Dar Life I July 2015

you can use to identify appropriate career paths and job roles. These include: Library research, Online databases Dictionary of Holland Occupational Codes, Occupational Outlook, Handbook (US Department of Labor), Career coaches, Professional associations, Trade publications Universities, Career portals and “job board” web sites Once you’ve completed your research, if all signs point toward a good fit, then mobilize your resources, get into action and go after your new career! Narrowing Your Choices If you’re still having difficulty finding your next career path, go back through the data that emerged from your exercises, assessments and research. Then, pursue these additional steps: Identify the “Consistent Themes” that appeared multiple times in your documents and test reports – themes that seem to “define who you are” (think of these as your “must haves”) Create an “Employer Wish List” that includes all the characteristics of an ideal company to work for (when picking your next employer, make sure it matches your “ideal adjectives” as closely as possible) Draft your “Perfect Job Description” that would truly be the “job of your dreams” (when you‘re “crystal clear” about the specific job you want, you’ll have a much better chance of actually finding or creating it)

I

f you’re seriously considering making a career change, it will be important to go through some preliminary “internal exercises” to discover what type of role would be best for you. As a career changer, you would also be well advised to take a battery of “formal” career assessments and personality profiles (such as The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and The Strong Interest Inventory). These will help you identify new career options and narrow-down the possibilities to a carefully thought-out list of initial job choices.

SAUTI YETU - “Our Voice” A Multi-media Performance for Development By Sauda Simba

“This is the fourth Sauti Yetu show in just two months, of which three were collaborations with Baba Watoto Center and Art for Social and Economic Development in Africa (ASEDEVA) with the Museum and House of Culture under a special project funded by the Swedish institute.” After a boisterous welcome and introduction from the Museum and House of Culture lighting engineer Chance Ezekeil, who doubled up as MC of the night, a beautiful solo performance from MUDA Africa dancer Tadhi Alawi, provided the perfect mood for the riveting performance that was to follow. Using interactive platforms on one stage, choreographer Isack Peter Abeneko used tables and chairs as props to keep the audience engaged 52 I Dar Life I July 2015

and entertained throughout the hour-long performance. The live ensemble produced tight rhythmic melodies complementing the fluid dance movements that held the audience captive. Caroline Anande Uliwa delivered a powerful poem mixing Kiswahili and English in between the sets that touched on pertinent and timely issues of youth rights and democracy. Ideas on leadership, the rights of the disabled, and discrimination of individuals living with albinism were spun out poetically and with enthralling passion. What really set this event apart was the interaction. On multi-media platforms, the producers engaged the audience in a live debate both on stage and on WhatsApp. The audience contributed their opinions and ideas on all aspects of youth rights. Feedback after the show clearly indicates that there is a craving for more, and more will follow so… watch this space!

BUSINESS

Mushroom Management Don’t Keep Your Workforce in the Dark By Gregory P. Smith

Today’s businesses must change course quickly. Communication and information are essential to innovation, good customer service, high retention, and change. And it has to flow freely. Low-Access and High-Access Organizations Good communication is a hallmark of the high-retention work environment. At its heart, communication is all about access.

“In a low-access organization, the flow of communication is guarded and restricted constipated, in fact.” People find themselves kept in the dark, like mushrooms, stuffed in narrow confines based on job descriptions, ranking, and where they sit on the organizational chart. It’s no surprise that low-access organizations—many of them hierarchical—have greater 56 I Dar Life I July 2015

difficulty responding to change, fluctuating customer needs, and the fluidity of the modern workplace.

“In contrast, a high-access organization thrives on information and shares it to the maximum extent possible.” The more information people have, the more quickly they can respond to the changing needs of customers and the environment. High-access companies are committed to open communication. Symptoms of the Low-Access Organization § It’s a regulatory-based culture, not a peoplebased culture. A low-access organization is structured around rules, regulations and policies. Management places more emphasis on enforcing rules than eliminating unnecessary rules and regulations.

centralized. The low-access organization has a topdown decision making process. § Mistakes are hard to fix. The low-access organization has a reward system that minimizes change and initiative. Because only the people on top of the organization are responsible for interpreting and approving any changes to regulations, decision-making slows down because the responsibility and power to make decisions is taken away from those who need it the most. § Change is resisted. A low-access organization protects itself from change. Only a disaster, a threat, or a public relations crisis is enough to initiate change. In the compartmentalized, functionally aligned, department-bydepartment organization, there is an expert for everything. § The pecking order is defined. In its worst form, a low-access organization becomes a caste system. Top-down layering dictates what roles to take, whom to talk to, and who to associate with. Rank, position and educational degrees become more important than results.

“Haji Chilonga’s first exhibition took place in 1995 at Bamayu Gallery in Tanzania. He has since exhibited his work in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, USA and Canada. He has participated in three international art workshops and four solo exhibitions. Recently Chilonga´s style was picked up by a very skillful young artist named Thobias Minzi, who had some success at an AFRICA/NOW exhibition, much to dismay of Chilonga. Recently Haji Chilonga visited the USA and we hope we will get some interesting observations from him on AFRUM.”

By Neema Maro

H

aji Chilonga was born on January 24th, 1969 in Lukuledi in Southern Tanzania. He comes from a pottery and blacksmith family background. As he was interested in drawings since he was young, he started off earning his living by painting commercial advertisements. He became a serious painter in 1992 when he was tutored by more experienced artists. At this time when Chilonga started to paint, he drew a few artists to himself. For instance he taught Aly Kitogo and he considerably influenced Florian Ludovick. All of these painters had very similar styles initially, but as time went they each found their own personal style and developed a distinctive imprint. Chilonga prefers

to paint portraits and local life situations. DL - What inspired you to start painting? Chilonga – For the most part I got inspired just by observing daily life around me. DL - How long have you been an artist? Chilonga - I have been serious about being an artist since 1992. DL - What mediums do you like to use? Chilonga - I prefer acrylic over oil paints. DL - Tell us about your first exhibition. When was it? Chilonga – I was so excited to have the opportunity for the first time. It was held at July 2015 I Dar Life I 59

BAMAYU GALLERY in Dar es Salaam in 1997. DL - Do you work from life, or from photographs or from imagination? Chilonga - I work from my imagination for my abstract style paintings, but sometimes I paint from real life too. DL - What moves you most in life, either to inspire or upset you? Chilonga - There are so many things I can’t mention all of them, but I’m always inspired when I travel and meet new people and new challenges. DL - Where do you feel art is going? Chilonga - In my country the current state of art is not good, because very few people have an understanding of art and its role in society. DL - What is the role of the artist in society? Chilonga - Musicians and actors have come to play an important role in society, but visual artists still have a very long way to go to be respected. DL - What technique do you use? Which is more important to you, the subject of your painting, or the way it is executed? Chilonga - The technique I use is abstract, but the most important thing to me is the subject of the piece. DL - Do you prefer a perfect smooth technique or a more energetic expressive technique and why? Chilonga - To me it doesn’t matter, either smooth or energetic expressive technique. DL - What do you think makes your work stand out? Chilonga – My passion comes through in my work and I think people can sense that. To purchase any of Chilonga’s paintings and to inquire about his exhibitions, please contact: Haji Chilonga +255 (0) 754 297 471, chilongahaji@yahoo.com or visit http:// hajichilonga.weebly.com/index.html

Stressed Out Skin Take Stock To Look Your Best By John Sadly

A

s we head into the middle of the year, the stress from the past six months is starting to accumulate. July is a great time to take stock of our stress levels and take necessary steps to get us through the rest of the year feeling and looking good. What to look out for:

路 The stress hormone cortisol has various effects on the skin. Cortisol can cause increased production of oil by the oil glands. It can increase the sensitivity of the skin, can prolong healing and worsen existing conditions. 路 Rosacea, psoriasis, dermatitis and eczema are common conditions associated with stress. These can cause red patchy areas associated with extreme itchiness, burns and blisters. The inflammation caused by the flare up of these conditions can cause acne lesions, which can take months to fully heal. 路 Stress may be the primary reason for unexplained hair loss for men and women. When someone is under stress hair can go into the telogen (fall-out) phase. Telogen effluvium is a very common hair loss problem that can occur up to three months after a stressful event. After the initial hair loss, hair usually grows back in six to nine months. 路 Nail biting is a common condition with adults and children when stressed. Other nail conditions can be brittle nails that break and split easily and nails with ridges. Try the following tips and ideas to alleviate stress. Tip 1: Learn the cause of your stress and tackle the root of it. Tip 2: During this time of the year we seem to run out of time all the time. Whatever you do, do not neglect your normal

64 I Dar Life I July 2015

skin-care regime. To ensure your skin looks spotless, youthful and refreshed, follow your twice-daily skincare program of cleansing, toning and moisturising. Treat yourself to a deep cleansing facial. Tip 3: Exercise! Even a small amount of exercise can increase the endorphin levels in the blood and suppress cortisol. Not only are endorphins your feel-good hormone, but exercise will increase the oxygen levels in the blood stream, which will increase healing in areas where needed. A brisk walk around the shopping mall can also count for exercise but we prefer doing it outdoors in the fresh air!

Special Promo on Elemis Facial at Anantara Spa Receive a 20% discount when booking a 60 or 75 minute Elemis Facial at Anantara Spa at Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam or Park Hyatt Zanzibar. Offer is valid from 1st to 31st July 2015. Terms & conditions apply. For Dar es Salaam Anantara Spa, please email spa.thekilimanjaro@hyatt.com or call +255 764 70 1234, ext. 828. For Zanzibar Anantara Spa, please email sirawanee.brownlee@hyatt.com or call +255 24 223 1234.

Tip 4:Take time out to do the things you like and do something for yourself. Yoga, meditation or just doing your favorite thing like arranging a beautiful vase of flowers can trigger the production of endorphins and serotonin. Also, ensure that you get enough sleep during the busy times. Proper amounts of sleep are required for normal brain function. Insufficient sleep will diminish mental alertness, which will prevent you for coping with stress well. Tip 5: We’ve all heard of the term, “you are what you eat”. Consuming large amounts of alcohol, unrefined foods and sugars during the festive period will not only cause mayhem in your body but will also influence the way your handle your stress during these times. Tip 6: We all should know our limitations. It is ok to say NO sometimes! Saying no limits your boundaries and prevents you from becoming overloaded at work or being taken advantage of by friends and family. It is also ok to speak to somebody when your stress is getting too much for you, whether it is a professional person or a good friend.

Jambo Fashion Affair Pursuing Fashion as a Talent By Nahuja Nuhu “This year’s Jambo Fashion Affair took place in Arusha City on the night of 6th June at Alliance Française Grounds. The ssow has experienced tremendous growth over the past three years, most significantly locally but also on the international scene. This year the show gave fashion lovers in Arusha an introduction to new trends and more reasons to not just love fashion, but also to support the event and its designers.”

ambo Fashion Affair is part of the fastgrowing Jambo Festival, which aims to touch as many forms of art and style as possible. Now in its fourth year, the Festival is becoming one of the premier events in the country and East Africa. Jambo Fashion Affair had 13 amazing designers from East Africa on the runway. The show was opened by

none other than Muslim designer Fatmah Naeem, whose new collection was presented by the stylist Rio Paul. Nisa Abaya as a brand was chosen not just to take part, but to open the show. Abaya’s designs tend to tell a story and the use of color, textures, prints and luxurious fabrics entertain different personalities in the audience.

“The organizer aims to turn the fashion affair into an internationally renowned showcase of designs, trends and style from Africa at the heart of Tanzania’s Tourism Capital City – Macrida Joseph, Lotta Molle and Jihan Dimack made special model appearances. The show also featured designers from Kenya for the first time, as well as the youngest designers ever to showcase on

the Jambo runway. Seventeen-year old Johson Tondi from Njiro, Arusha is proving to his community and his family that fashion is not just a hobby, but a talent worth perusing.

Arusha. The show is a fashion platform that gives opportunities for both upcoming and established fashion designers to flourish.” July 2015 I Dar Life I 71

Indeed, it was a night to remember, as Martin Kandida closed the runway show with his new and famous collection Ng’asti, leading into the muchanticipated after party. The band H-art came all the way from Nairobi and did not disappoint, as they gave their best live performance yet by singing hits incluidng Uliza kiatu and Nikikutazama. The and only Hisia kept people singing Give me a call during the runway show break, and DJ Dark

meme was on the deck the whole night making sure the audience was fully entertained. For a month or so the show has been a talk of the town as everything that was promised was delivered. The show was covered by top media houses including Dar Life Magazine and EATV, through Nirvana show. We can honestly say the show was indeed a success and we cannot wait to see what the organizers will do next year!

All Picture Courtesy of Jambo Fashion Affair

Designers had a chance to speak to the audience and the fashion lovers about their work, and Jambo Fashion did an amazing job of introducing new and upcoming designers, not only from Arusha, but also from Dar and Dodoma. Many of these designers might have never gotten the chance to showcase elsewhere. Together with a daytime fashion market, designers had a huge opportunity to network with a newfound market and sell their products.

Fevre Dream - by George R.R. Martin

When struggling riverboat captain Abner Marsh receives an offer of partnership from a wealthy aristocrat, he suspects something’s amiss. But when he meets the hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York, he is certain. For York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet. Nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. York has his own reasons for wanting to traverse the powerful Mississippi. And they are to be none of Marsh’s concern—no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious his actions may prove. Marsh meant to turn down York’s offer. It was too full of secrets that spelled danger. But the promise of both gold and a grand new boat that could make history crushed his resolve—coupled with the terrible force of York’s mesmerizing gaze. Not until the maiden voyage of his new sidewheeler Fevre Dream would Marsh realize he had joined a mission both more sinister, and perhaps more noble, than his most fantastic nightmare...and mankind’s most impossible dream. Here is the spellbinding tale of a vampire’s quest to unite his race with humanity, of a garrulous riverman’s dream of immortality, and of the undying legends of the steamboat era and a majestic, ancient river.

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North

No matter what he does or the decisions he makes, when death comes, Harry always returns to where he began, a child with all the knowledge of a life he has already lived a dozen times before. Nothing ever changes. Until now. As Harry nears the end of his eleventh life, a little girl appears at his bedside. ‘I nearly missed you, Doctor August,’ she says. ‘I need to send a message. ‘This is the story of what Harry does next, and what he did before, and how he tries to save a past he cannot change and a future he cannot allow.

Mikumi National Park A paradise for all nature lovers By Sara Maro

“If you have chosen the southern circuit for your adventure safari, then a visit to Tanzania’s fourth largest national park, Mikumi, is likely to be on your program. Four roads will take you to this park which is known for hosting a wealth of Tanzania’s national animal, the giraffe.”

I

f you want to spend your holiday in a majestic natural area, the grand Mikumi National Park is the place to be. Established in 1964, m ikumi is the fourth largest national park in the world, enclosing an area of about 3230 square kilometers. Located south of Dar es Salaam right on the main m national park stop on the Tanzania southern circuit safari. The word Mikumi comes from a local word for Borassus palm trees referred to as Mikuky. Mikumi was the name given to the villages created by a tribal chief of Wavindunda community with the name of Mtwahela Kikuwi (pronounced mm-twa-hhe-laa Keekuu-wee). Mikumi National Park has two main sections divided by the main road. The northwest section is where most guests undertake their wildlife and birdlife viewing expeditions made possible by existing safari tracks. t he m ecosystem by creating pools of water and therefore creating a sustainable environment for the plants and wildlife. The vegetations predominantly found are

mixed grassland with acacia, baobab, sausage, tamarind and few small palms trees. Game driving further into the park or staying at the Foxes Tented Camp, itself lying on a hill, the majestic view of the Rubeho and Uluguru mountains can be seen, which are part of the preCambrian rocks formed over 600 million years ago. The southeast of Mikumi National Park is not conducive to the safari experience because of its underdeveloped infrastructure. Guests staying at the Vuma Hills Tented Camp can experience the rugged and wilderness experience from a geological and vegetation perspective. Visiting Mikumi National Park during the dry season can aid a safari experience by the fact that the dried up vegetation and the brown soil creates a superb hue during sunrises and sunsets.

First Park on the southern safari Circuit: mikumi National Park is the first stop on the southern safari circuit, allowing guests an enjoyable break with a wildlife viewing experience on route to Ruaha National Park. Excellent Biodiversity: mikumi offers the opportunity to view a diverse number of animals and birds in a short period of time without too much driving around. Personalized Wildlife Watching: With relatively few numbers of people undertaking the southern safari circuit by road, Mikumi is one of the most under-visited parks in Tanzania. Accommodation Fairly Priced: Accommodations in Mikumi National Park cater to all personalities and budgets, making it a must-visit park for any person visiting Tanzania. unique Wildlife Experience: safari guides often state that it is easier to spot a tree-climbing lion in Mikumi National Park than to spot one in Lake Manyara National Park.

Wildlife and Birdlife Experience at Mikumi National Park The wildlife viewing experience at Mikumi National Park can be experienced right upon entering the park where guests can encounter baboons, zebras and impalas July 2015 I Dar Life I 89

What to do Game drives and guided walks are great options. Manu guests enjoy visiting the snake park in Mikumi village. Guests can also visit the nearby Udzungwa Mountains, or travel on for more wildlife safari in Selous or Ruaha.

Best Time to Visit Mikumi National Park’s dry season starts around mid-May lasting to mid-November, with patches 90 I Dar Life I July 2015

of transition time between January and February when rains switch from the short to the long rains. Long rains start from around the middle of February tapering off by the middle of May.

Getting there A good surfaced road connects Mikumi to Dar es Salaam via Morogoro, roughly a 4 hour drive. There are also road connections to Udzungwa, Ruaha and (dry season only) Selous. Charter flights are available from Dar es salaam, Arusha or Selous and local buses run from Dar to park HQ where Tanzania Safari game drives can be arranged.

Mikumi Lodges & Camps • Foxes safari Camp - Foxes safari Camp is a small and personalized camp in Mikumi. It is set up on a rocky kopje on the mkata flood plain, which presides over the best game viewing area of the park, the Mwanamboga Waterhole. • Kikoboga Camp - Kikoboga Camp is a wellestablished and comfortable hideaway in Mikumi National Park where you can enjoy spectacular wild animals and abundant birdlife. • vuma Hills tented Camp - vuma Hills tented Camp is perched above the trees stretching over the seemingly endless wilderness southwest of Mikumi National Park. Mikumi National Park’s wonderful wildlife experience, along with its perfect location on route to Ruaha National Park, makes it a mustvisit during a Tanzania safari.

speedily crossing the road. Making a right turn after paying the park fees leads you right into the Kikoboga-Mikumi Wildlife Camp, where guests can watch the elephants in the distance splattering them with mud. Circulation around the Kisungura road circuit leads you to the hippo pool, which is best visited during the evenings when the distant setting sun and the bobbing heads of the hippos create perfect pictures. Next to the flood plain, guests might see birds such as crowned cranes, kingfishers, hornbills and storks each having a sharp eye out for anything that might slither or move in the water or on the grassy patches. Traversing further northwest, heading to the Foxes Safari Camp, may lead you to wallowing buffalos taking advantage of Mkata flood plains small catchments or you might see the unpublicized tree-climbing lions of Mikumi National Park. Crisscrossing the safari road tracks of the Mikumi National Park can lead you to the ultimate treat of viewing the giraffes that are being debated by many naturalists to be a cross between the Maasai and reticulated giraffe because of their compromising patterns.
