TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

Serengeti Balloon Safaris is delighted to announce that they hosted their first flight over beautiful Tarangire National Park on 12th June. The flight saw the group of 22 guests fly in two balloons from the launch site located on the North West corner of the Silale swamp and then they flew over the ridge to a verdant Tarangire valley, landing for a sumptuous Out of Africa breakfast done in the usual elegant style of Serengeti Balloon Safaris under an acacia tree. With its diverse wildlife and exceptional birdlife, Tarangire offers a great alternative flight location to the Serengeti as revealed in this maiden flight. Consistently at the forefront of ballooning in Tanzania, Serengeti Balloon Safaris (SBS) are always looking to develop and improve their customer experiences and this new route over Tarangire is testament to this ambition. Tarangire is the 4th national park in which SBS fly; Serengeti (year-round all over the park following the migration movements), NCAA (Dec-March), Ruaha (June-Oct) and now Tarangire (JuneMarch).

TANZANIA NEW TOURISM MARKET

Through diversification of tourist visiting sites and searching for new markets, Tanzania is targeting to intensify its tourism marketing in new tourist sources in South America, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa other than the traditional European and the United States markets. The Chinese tourist market is on top among other Asian markets which Tanzania is struggling to attract. Diversification of tourist visiting sites is currently the strategy which Tanzania is focusing on through the opening of lesser-known areas on the coast and in the southern and western areas which are rich with historical and wildlife resources. Marketing of Tanzania’s tourism would mostly be directed to capture new non-traditional markets including China, South Korea, Brazil, Qatar, Oman, and other African states. Tanzania aims to attract 5 million tourists from next year to gain about US$6 billion against the current 2 million tourists who spent about US$3.6 billion as of the end of March of this year.

KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Air France has announced plans to resume flights to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, after a 28-year absence from the route. Starting 18 November, the airline will operate thrice-weekly services using Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The flights will follow a triangular route, stopping in Zanzibar before continuing to Kilimanjaro. This addition marks Air France’s 39th African destination and its 32nd in sub-Saharan Africa. The move aims to tap into the growing market of approximately 310,000 annual roundtrip passengers between Europe/North America and Kilimanjaro, with Paris being the largest unserved European market last year. The new route will enhance connectivity to the popular outdoor leisure destination, known for Africa’s largest mountain and nearby national parks. Air France will join other carriers serving the route, including KLM, Discover, Edelweiss, and Turkish Airlines.

LAUNCH OF SGR SERVICES

Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) officially launched the Standard Gauge Railway operations from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro with passengers enjoying a free ride after President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan decided to provide free tickets to more than 1400 passengers. Deputy Minister for Transport, David Kihenzile was among the first passengers in the first ever electric train in the country. Mr Kihenzile said the Head of State ordered TRC to offer free service to all passengers who will use the service on the launching day. The train started its journey from Dar es Salaam at 6:10 am and arrived at Morogoro main station at 7:56am covering 300 kilometers using only 1:45 hours. The milestone will mark significant advancement in Tanzaniaʼs transport infrastructure, promising enhanced connectivity and efficiency and stimulating economic growth, according to TRC director general Masanja Kadogosa. He made the remarks during the launch of an awareness campaign with the motto “Twende Tukapande Treni Yetu, Tuitunze, Tuithamini” (letʼs go board our train, take care of it, value it).

Tanzania’s southern highlands Beyond The Bush

More often than not, Tanzania conjures imagery of safaris through golden-hued savannas in search of heart-stopping Big Five encounters and lazy beach escapes. Even the most seasoned safari-goer can tire of Tanzania’s heat and humidity, especially when days are spent tracking wildlife in an open-air safari vehicle. Few travellers know where to go beyond Tanzania’s mountains, beaches and well-worn northern and southern safari circuits. Fewer still know that this East African country has bucolic highlands characterised by tea plantations,

Life revolves at a s-l-o-w pace in Tanzania’s southern highlands. Here you can unwind in a farmstyle setting, while indulging in welcome reprieve from the heat of your safari or the busyness of city life.

trout-stocked dams and horse outrides combined with an air of the English countryside.

Welcome to Mufindi Highland Lodge, found in the cool embrace

of Tanzania’s southern highlands that are part of the East Arc Rift Valley. The lodge offers a tranquil interlude to your holiday, whether you’re looking to relax ahead of a safari or rejuvenate before you continue your adventure. Its strategic location makes it the ideal stopover for fly-in safaris between the country’s national parks – whether you’re on your way to Ruaha or Nyerere National Park in the south, Katavi National Park in the west or the Serengeti in the north. Locals, in search of peace, also prize it as the perfect mid-week or long-weekend getaway.

As you approach Mufindi, you’ll see tea pickers with baskets overflowing with emerald green leaves. They are destined for your cuppa to be enjoyed in your wooden log cabin, bundled up by the fireplace with a pageturner, or on the lodge veranda as you look out for the Livingstone’s Turaco.

Mufindi gives you the choice to be as active or relaxed as you prefer during your visit to this 2 000-acre family estate. While relaxation is undoubtedly the name of the game, the lodge also offers an array of activities to choose from, such as:

• A tour of the tea plantations:

Top of your list should be a guided tour of the tea plantations with none other

than Geoff Fox – the founding patriarch of the family-run business. Expect Geoff to give you an insightful first-hand overview of Tanzania’s history of tea growing over the ages –with a few personal anecdotes thrown in for good measure.

• Guided hikes: Explore the surrounding montane rainforests during a guided hike, while keeping an eye out for monkeys swinging through the canopies. You’ll learn about the family’s efforts to protect these indigenous forests, alongside their wildlife, especially due to the efforts of Chris Fox and his team of trackers. Over the decades, the family has planted more than 3 million trees on tracts of barren land that surrounded

the estate. This means their entire operations absorb more carbon than it emits.

• Horseback riding: Book a guided horseback ride (no matter your level of experience) along scenic trails beneath a canopy of Jacarandas to the tea plantations or into the surrounding verdant valleys. This is where you can also visit the communities that form such an integral part of the family estate.

Other activities include kayaking, swimming or flyfishing in the trout-stocked dams, followed by high tea or sundowners at the water’s edge. Unless, of course, you’d rather play lawn sports (badminton, bowls or croquet)

or unwind in the secret garden.

A family legacy steeped in sustainability Mufindi Highlands Lodge is so much more than simply a place to stay or a destination. It is owned and operated (and was built) by the Fox family in 1997. Long-standing partnerships with neighbouring communities ensure a symbiotic relationship with the land and its people. They are also the main beneficiaries of the Foxes Community and Wildlife Conservation Trust.

This, too, is where Geoff and Vicky Fox have their family home in Tanzania. Much like the lodge, their home is made from non-indigenous wood sourced from the estate’s tree plantations, while the stone was mined and hand-hewn from the farm. It’s no wonder then that the lodge exudes familial warmth throughout and encompasses the Fox family’s legacy of responsible tourism.

Mufindi takes its commitment to the environment very seriously – you can see it in every aspect of their operations. The family champions a circular economy

By including Mufindi Highlands Lodge in your itinerary, you’re not merely adding another destination, you’re adding another dimension to your Tanzanian holiday.

model with the aim to minimise waste and their environmental impact, while maximising the sustainable (and circular) use of natural resources. This passion for sustainability is woven into the very fabric of Mufindi’s operations – and that of the other six Foxes Safari Camps and lodges around southern Tanzania. But perhaps this is best experienced at Mufindi, during a visit to their bountiful vegetable garden and working livestock farm.

Foxes Safari Camps sources a significant portion of their fresh produce for their entire operations – not just Mufindi Highlands Lodge – from their on-site, organic gardens, which

are run under Vicky’s watchful eye. A freshly-picked harvest is distributed across their other properties via regular flights on their airline, Safari Air Link. The same goes for the products from the farm dairy and butchery. In fact, the family has gone as far as growing and roasting Arabica coffee and macadamia nuts for their camps too.

So, you see, by including Mufindi Highlands Lodge in your itinerary, you’re not merely adding another destination, you’re adding another dimension to your Tanzanian holiday. This is the place to experience a part of Tanzania that’s often overlooked by travellers and locals alike. Let Mufindi be your refuge, before embarking on the next leg of your unforgettable safari adventure.

With its harsh and rocky landscape, no other park in Tanzania epitomises the definition of "wild Africa" quite like Ruaha National Park. After the annexation of two other major conservation areas, Ruaha is now the largest national park in Tanzania, covering a vast .)!selaWnahtregralyllaitnatsbus(sertemolikerauqs000,32foaera

While few are familiar with the park, national park connoisseurs recognize it as one of the most spectacular in Africa. “

against a dramatic topographical background. Because of its location rift and surrounding geological formations, Ruaha is extremely diverse, with access to several different habitat types.

vast majority of the park above escarpment termed “Miombo Woodland ‘’ is rarely visited by and known for challenging viewing and an abundance of The scenery in Miombo is dramatic, with tall Brachystegia forming continuous woodland housing for some specialist species

as well as several miombospecialising birds.

low-altitude Ruaha Valley is the developed section of the park, covers little more than a third park’s total size. The Ruaha has a decent road network game viewing and a variety vegetation types, thus offering diverse game drive experience without the annoyance of tse-tse

Ruaha Valley. Some of Ruahas’ features are found in the valley, massive rocky hills and outcrops dense, impenetrable bush and grasslands in the east. The striking features are numerous serpentine dry “sand rivers”, which crisscross the park and are lined dense vegetation, where many animals take refuge.

Birding

birdwatchers, Ruaha’s birdlife is please. There are a recorded different species of birds in the including giant herons, saddlestorks, white-headed plovers white-backed night herons. There species of both vultures and hornbills, and raptors abound. The crested barbet, an attractive yellowand-black bird whose persistent is a characteristic sound of the southern bush, can also be found in alongside central Tanzanian endemics such as the yellow-collared

lovebird and ashy starling. The park’s birds make their home among the branches of Ruaha’s 1600 species of trees, which is twice as many as the number of species in the great Selous Game Reserve, although Ruaha is only half the size of Selous.

Wildlife

wildlife at Ruaha National Park: wild and beautiful. The park holds an incredible array of animals. Among Tanzanian parks, Ruaha possesses one of the highest species counts of large mammals. The park holds an estimated 20,000 elephants alone, and it is not uncommon in the dry season to see well over 100 elephants in a single drive. Hippos rule the river, and vast quantities of these animals can also be seen sunning themselves along the stunning river sandbanks in the early morning. Massive herds of buffalo, with up to 500 animals plus seen in a single herd, coexist alongside giraffes, zebras, impalas, elands, crocodiles, lions and leopards.

Ruaha is also home to some very rare creatures. Sable antelope can occasionally be found in the Miombo areas as well as in the springs in the western part of the park. Roan antelope are also sometimes seen in the eastern area of the park. Lesser kudus and grant’s gazelle are intermittently spotted at the southernmost point of their geographical range. Dik-diks abound all over

the park, and rarely does a drive return without having glimpsed the noble greater kudu. Ruaha is also home to the second largest population of wild dogs in Africa. As the majority of the park’s wild dogs live in the inaccessible wilderness areas of the north, only a few lucky visitors spot them.

Why visit Ruaha National Park?

Untouched, Pristine Nature:

Ruaha is one of the less frequented national parks in Tanzania, which means that the park’s wildlife has hardly been altered by human intervention.

Personalised Wildlife Watching: Because Ruaha is expanding in size yearly, the chances of bumping into other vehicles that can startle an animal you may be already watching are limited.

Lots to Discover: In areas where park authorities have formal tracks, there are no access restrictions, which allows visitors a great deal of freedom to explore undiscovered territory. Currently, Tanzanian park authorities are adding more routes while carefully monitoring the ecological impact, thus ascertaining that the wildlife remains as undisturbed as possible. There are plans to add up to 1500 kilometres of road networks.

Go by Foot: Ruaha is one of the few national parks in Tanzania where walking safari is permitted when accompanied by an armed ranger. This liberty

gives nature enthusiasts an opportunity to receive an upclose and personal experience with wildlife in dense places where safari vehicles cannot penetrate.

Getting to

There are two ways guests can reach Ruaha National Park. One is by road, through Iringa from Dar es Salaam via Mikumi, or from Arusha via Dodoma. Ruaha is also accessible by plane. available from Dar es Salaam, Selous, Serengeti, Arusha, Iringa and Mbeya through companies such as Safari Air Link & Auric Air.

When to go

To see predators and large mammals, dry season (mid-May to December); to see birds, lush season (January to April). The male greater kudu is most visible in June, which is the breeding season.

For the more discerning safari lover who is looking for an ‘off the beaten track’ pure wilderness experience, a visit to Ruaha to view its large beasts, stunning vistas, numerous baobabs and unique birds and animals must not be missed!

One of East Africa’s biggest tourism Expo

One of East Africa’s biggest tourism Expo, Karibu-Kilifair took place from 7-9 June 2024 at Magereza Ground in Arusha, Tanzania. The event brought together investors, tour operators, hoteliers, SMEs and several other tourism stakeholders from around the world as part of efforts to adequately support and showcase the tourism industry in East Africa.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

Tips for women to stay ahead in today’s marketplace

Many women set out on one course and change several times before settling on a role that feels right for them. So, what’s the answer? Is having a career an outdated concept for today’s marketplace? Here are my 5 career tips to shift the way you think about your work.

1. Know yourself: Before we can really begin to progress and be successful, we must get to know and understand who we really are, as opposed to who we’ve become, and then learn how to market and promote all of our many capabilities and talents. This exercise should be revisited at critical stages in our life because as we grow and evolve our needs and desires change. Empowered women understand that a balanced perspective is an inside out process.

2.Get Totally Clear on What You Want: A tricky area to navigate and I’d say the number one reason why most women remain stuck in roles and careers that keep them unfulfilled is because we never give enough time or consideration to what we really want to do with our lives. We delay and put off stuff through fear, lack of know-how, poor goal setting or generally because we put our needs last and the family needs first. You’ve

got to confront those deeper questions like what makes you happy and what is going to fit in with your broader life goals like raising a family or working less so you can travel more.

3.Find the Right Environment: Cultures should be carefully examined and tested because many are a world apart from the sexy brand images and persuasive advertising of those manufactured lists like the top 100 best companies to work for. That starts with understanding what you are known for within your business then growing, learning and building upon this by contributing to projects and developing great contacts. It’s about keeping your online data up to date whilst highlighting your best work.

4. Forget the Job Title: Your title does not define you nor cushion you from redundancy or change. It’s a very outdated concept based on a society that values educational achievement above all else but one that only teaches kids to pass exams. Job titles don’t carry the financial assurances they once did. Organisations are invariably flatter and many career development paths are increasingly lateral rather than upward. Upwards is not always best, often leading to increasing bureaucracy and distance from

the very aspects of the role you found appealing in the first place and that’s before you have to tackle the male dominated boardrooms.

5.It’s Not All About the Money: Money makes the world go round of course but many women, whilst I think we fare better than men on this subject, have fallen into the trap of seeing work as a functional necessity rather than a pleasurable, fulfilling and meaningful pursuit. Purposeful work doesn’t have to be reserved for a tiny elite bunch of individuals like artists and creative types. In this brave new world, we’ve all got to learn how to be artists whether that’s working for yourself, freelancing or as a corporate executive in big business. Our careers can give us the opportunities to do work we love as well as the ability to continuously learn and create as well as making a worthy contribution.

So, if you’re fed up with the career you’ve chosen, my best career tip is this: focus on reinventing yourself because it’s never too late to transition to something altogether more rewarding. ............................ Issued by Kath Roberts

JOB! YOU GOT THE WHAT? Now

Once you’re “on the job,” there are many immediate career challenges to attend to. Experts such as Michael Watkins believe that you have 90 days in a new job to make your impact and create the permanent impression that people in the organization will have of you and your leadership capabilities.

Having worked with thousands of executives who have successfully secured new positions, in my opinion, there are five priorities that you should focus on during the first 90 days:

Establish Positive Relationships

With your new colleagues, develop good communication habits to maintain those relationships. Be honest, open, friendly, reliable and clear. Be outgoing and introduce yourself to co-workers (don’t wait for them to approach you).

Develop a Reputation

For producing tangible results for keeping commitment and for meeting deadlines. Immediately start a “success file” and track your accomplishments and contributions. Make note of

You’ve finally landed the job. Is this a good time to settle in and take it easy for a while, or is this the worst time to take your foot off the “career gas pedal?” A lot of people in this situation might think, “Whew – now I can relax, cruise a while and rest on my laurels.” Actually, your work is just beginning –but so is your “glory”!

the positive feedback you get from others in conversation and in writing – from clients, managers, colleagues and vendors.

Communicate

Plans and progress to your superiors and to your team. Become known for setting challenging goals and completing projects ontime and on-budget with measurable results.

In-house Contact Network

Begin building your own in-house contact network. Cultivate good relationships with everyone – including the employees above and below your level. Get to know people’s names. Reach out to the mail guy, the security guard, the IT guru, your manager’s executive assistant –everyone!

Healthy Balance

Maintain a healthy balance between your work life and your private life. Make sure that you don’t “go overboard” with your enthusiasm for your new job. Family time, hobbies and “recharging your batteries” are all part of your long-term professional effectiveness and success.

In summary, you must focus on garnering respect, visibility and credibility during your first 90 days on the job. The precedents you establish during this period will tend to last for your entire tenure at that organization. So, this “thumbprint period” is critically important to your long-term success!

LAUNCH OF CRDB INSURANCE COMPANY

Increasing social and economic wellbeing

Commissioner for the Development of the Financial Sector in the country, Dr. Charles Mwamaja has congratulated CRDB Bank for establishing a subsidiary insurance company ‘CRDB Insurance Company (CIC)’ where he said it will greatly help to contribute to the achievement of the government’s goals of increasing insurance coverage to 50 percent for Tanzanians aged 18 and over by in 2030.

Dr.Charles Mwamaja, the Commissioner for the Development of the Financial Sector, has commended CRDB Bank for launching its subsidiary, CRDB Insurance Company (CIC). He emphasized that this initiative will significantly aid the government’s objective of increasing insurance coverage to 50 percent for Tanzanians aged 18 and above by 2030.

Dr. Mwamaja made these comments at the company’s inauguration in the city, a year after it was licensed to offer non-life insurance services to Tanzanians. He encouraged CIC to leverage CRDB Bank’s extensive experience and widespread presence to reach more people, especially given the Bank’s branches in all councils nationwide.

Representing the Minister of Finance, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, Dr. Mwamaja highlighted that although the insurance sector in Tanzania is still nascent, it has immense potential. He stressed that insurance companies should invest in innovative products and provide education to help the nation achieve its insurance inclusion goals by 2030.

“I applaud your innovation in launching agricultural insurance in partnership with ACRE Africa. Agriculture is a vital sector in our economy, employing the largest workforce. By extending your services to rural areas, you will offer crucial support to farmers by protecting their crops and livestock. This insurance will provide peace of mind to farmers. Quality insurance services are the bedrock of economic prosperity and investment encouragement,” Dr. Mwamaja stated.

Dr. Baghayo Saqware, the Commissioner of the Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA), also lauded CRDB Bank for being the first financial institution in the country to establish an insurance subsidiary. He remarked that CIC would expand the insurance sector and boost Tanzanians’ participation in insurance services.

Discussing insurance inclusion, Dr. Saqware noted that by the end of 2023, there were 12 million insurance users, up from 6 million in 2022. He attributed this growth to government efforts, including mandatory insurance

policies, which are expected to double inclusion annually to reach the target.

“The government has also set up insurance consortia for oil, gas, agriculture, and livestock. Companies like CIC will contribute to these goals by investing capital, ensuring that a significant portion of insurance premiums remains within the country,” Commissioner Saqware said. He urged CIC to invest in employee training and adhere to legal and policy guidelines to prevent fraud.

Omary Mwaimu, Chairman of the Board of Directors, informed Dr. Mwamaja that their aim is to make CIC the leading insurance provider for all Tanzanians by offering innovative and affordable services that cater to various groups, thus enhancing insurance inclusion nationwide.

CRDB Bank’s CEO, Abdulmajid Nsekela, stated that the creation of CIC aligns with the bank’s goal of expanding its financial services, including insurance, to Tanzanians. He emphasized that CIC’s primary focus would be on

rural areas, where many people lack formal insurance coverage.

CIC’s CEO, Wilson Mnzava, invited agents, insurance brokers, customers, and other stakeholders to utilize CIC’s services, promising they would find peace of mind and economic stability in times of disaster.

CRDB Insurance Company (CIC) becomes the fourth subsidiary of CRDB Bank, joining CRDB Bank Burundi, CRDB Bank DR Congo, and CRDB Bank Foundation. CIC offers a range of non-life insurance services, including motor, home, business, shipping, travel, contractor, and mechanical insurance.

When the colors mix on a fabric to form bold, vibrant designs, you get a stunning African print. Tanzanian designers are not letting that opportunity pass by, they use all their imagination to create masterpieces.

They are claiming the fashion industry stage from the

Swahili Fashion Week in Dar es Salaam to the MercedesBenz Fashion Week in South Africa. Tanzanian designers are pushing the boundaries with a simple “Kitenge” leaving masterpieces in their wake.

Every month Dar Life dedicates this section to young emerging and well-

known designers who want to create brands and use the fashion platform as a stepping stone towards achieving their dream. This month we meet Amedeus Antony Chuwa whose ideas in designing clothes and accessories are amazing, you must watch out!

The course lasted for 2 years

“AMEDEUS ANTONY CHUWA”

of which his German teacher flew to Tanzania to personally coach him and show him how to pass on knowledge to his peers. It was at that time that he felt confident enough in his skills as a fashion designer and a tailor, he decided to open Chuwa Fashion. Currently, he designs and creates his own items.

He designs and creates his work around German protocol, a tailoring method used to increase and maintain the quality and life span of various clothing items. This method is rarely used among Tanzanian tailors and fashion designers. This is one of the key factors that separate Chuwa fashion products from other fashion designers in

the industry.

Today Chuwa is a classically trained tailor, set out to produce a clothing line both Afrocentric and vibrant, and to use fashion as a way to showcase his own sensibilities with the rich cultural inheritance of the Swahili coast to the world.
