Kili Music Awards Hot as Ever Fierce but Friendly Competition By Paul Owere
T
he Kilimanjaro Music Award competition has become synonymous with surprises, disappointments and triumphs over the years, and this year’s edition was no different. Dar Life was present when the thrilling awards presentation gala took place at Mlimani City Hall in Dar es Salaam. The amazing “Hill Hall” was a sight to behold, from the décor to the audience in attendance and the choreography of the competitors. For the over 2,000 guests in turnout at the event, and thousands glued to their TV screens at home, the evening was an emotional rollercoaster, as the best in the music industry came out to be crowned. This year Kili Music Awards featured an array of themed performances that saw the return of long lost oldies hip hop on the big stage. The event was kicked off by Mwana FA, later followed by many others.
The much-anticipated 2014 Kilimanjaro Awards went down as planned and was a success. The man who carried the day was the sensational Bongo musician, Diamond Platinumz. He proved to be number one -- the best Tanzania has to offer.

Diamond has also been nominated for other continental honours including the Mamas and the Kora Awards Beat competition, most notably beating out Lady JayDee to take home the Song of the Year trophy. On an emotional night with former beauty queen Wema Sepetu by his side, the MTV award
nominee was also chosen as the Best Composer, Best Entertainer, Best Collaboration, Best Afro Pop Song, Video of the Year and Best Male artist. Riding on the fame that he has garnered off his chart-topping hit single which he released in October last year, the elated Diamond could not hold back his joy. “As a future wife to be it is good to see my baby winning,” she said amid a thunderous applause. As some of his contemporaries seem to be fading, it was evident that the crooner is just getting better and the only blip on the night could have been his fashion sense, which the MC comically took issue with. On a night when some messed up their speeches, the singer remained composed; on most occasions he remembered to thank his fans, who he said were the pillar of his success. 16 I Dar Life I June 2014
Rivaling Diamond on the awards table was Jahazi Modern Taarab’s Mzee Yusuph, who picked up the Best Taarab song, Best Male Taarab singer, Best Taarab Band and Best Taarab composer awards. Another notable winner on the night was rapper Fid Q, who for the first time took home the two hip-hop awards, something pundits said was a worthy wait. In closing, the Kili Music Awards was an entertaining night of recognition for upcoming and established talents in Bongo Flava. Congratulations to all the participants and especially to the winners!

Walking and Playing for Breast Cancer in June 2014
The Dar es Salaam Players Little Theatre is organizing two upcoming events to raise awareness about breast cancer and to support charities working to end the spread of the disease in Tanzania. The Full Moon Walk is taking place on the evening of Friday 13 June (when there is scheduled to be a full moon, of course!) and is a “Powerwalk” challenge to raise money for breast cancer charities in Tanzania. Cheshire Cats is a two-act play written by Gail Young. The play follows the story of five women and one brave man as they train and get ready to participate in the London Moonwalk to raise money for breast cancer. Cheshire Cats is being performed as a Café Theatre production at The Little Theatre on 14th, 19th, 20th and 21st June. For more information, please email dsmplayers@gmail.com.

As Tanzania celebrated its fifty years of union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar, Mustafa Hassanali, Tanzania’s lead pan-African designer, was been invited by the Embassy of Tanzania in Moscow as a designer to showcase his creations during Tanzania Day, an event to celebrate this milestone moment. The Muungano collection showcased embodies harmony through the use of various shades of the base colour brown, synonymous with the colour of the sand which was symbolically used by Mwalimu Nyerere in the formation of the United Republic of Tanzania. Khanga, East African fabric, has been mixed in various hues to bring out the sophistication, simplicity and glamour of Tanzanian style.
A Traditional Dutch Celebration in Dar es Salaam
Dar Life was present at the 11th bi-annual Artisan Market held in Oyster Bay, Dar es Salaam this month. The event, which is run by a team of female volunteers originally from outside of Tanzania, began several years ago with just four small vendors. The Artisan Market has now grown into a bi-annual event with over 80 vendors selling beautiful and unique crafts and goods, including jewelry, handbags and wallets, tableware, home decorations, and clothing. The emphasis in these collectives is not only to make a profit to fund charitable works, but to train and empower people to live more independent, stable, and fulfilling lives. 20 I Dar Life I June 2014
To mark the first annual celebration of Kings Day (what has traditionally been Queens Day), the Netherlands Association in Dar es Salaam organized an Orange Party. The party was held at the Golden Tulip Hotel and featured a live performance by the band Flat Out! Guests in attendance ranged from Dutch expatriates living in Dar remembering home to local Tanzanians looking for a fun taste of another culture. Special thanks to the Golden Tulip Hotel for hosting, as well as the numerous sponsors who supported this memorable event!

The holiday has also become a celebration of the nationalcolor with «orange madness» or oranjegekte. The Dutch often dye their hair orange for the occasion and attend large-scale concerts and special public events in which they are joined by up to a million visitors from outside of the country. To mark this special occasion, the Netherlands Association in Dar es Salaam organized an Orange Party. n the weekend of Saturday and Sunday 26-27 April 2014, the Netherlands celebrated Koningsdag, or King’s Day, for the first time after the inauguration of King Willem-Alexander following the abdication of his mother, Queen Beatrix, last year. Traditionally since 1949, the biggest ‘Orange Fest’ of the year was known as Queen’s Day and was held on April 30 to mark the birthday of Holland’s former Queen Juliana.

Diverse Dar Choral Socie Classical & Jazz Music Series By Wema Kajo
T
he Dar Choral Society is not just about singing classical music in Tanzania! It is sharing our love of music by making it a bridge between all countries and religions. Originally founded in the 1940s by the European community in Dar es Salaam. It was revived in 2009 to become a very diverse choir including many Tanzanian singers. The group is without doubt one of the highlights of the classical music choral performance arena in Tanzania. With its long heritage of over 70 years of performance in Tanzania, the Choir 26 I Dar Life I June 2014
is showing all the signs of becoming a well-disciplined modern choir ushering in a new era of classical music in Tanzania.� The Dar Choral Society held a classical music and jazz concert in the Kicukoni Ballroom at Serena Hotel on May 25th. This concert marks the seventh time that the choir performs with an orchestra and is one of the major concerts that the Dar Choral Society hosts trice a year, generally in March, May and November. Covering works by Hon. Ambassador Masaki Okada for the amazing violin with Rossini,
Strauss and Beethoven, the group continued their tradition of excellence as young and energetic Hekima Raymond (Tanzania) conducted a whole choir and full orchestra of talented professional and amateur musicians. The Orchestra managed by the choir is made up of members of the expatriate community, Tanzanians and diplomats serving the Tanzanian nation in various disciplines, hence its nickname – the ‘Choir of the World in Dar’.
The long-term goal of the Dar Choral Society is to combine the beauty of music using choral works and orchestra. It aims at promoting classical music to thousands of Tanzanians through concerts and recordings of music in multiple languages, including Kiswahili. “The Society also aims to educate the public in the “art and science” of music through their concert series, enabling people of all ages to participate in this high quality cultural activity. Their objectives also include developing the Tanzanian arts infrastructure and providing meaningful experiences through engagement with music. “ The group holds their rehearsals on Wednesdays and Fridays from 6:30-8:00 PM at Lady Chesham Nursery School. This stone sculpture exhibition is an overview of ten years of work by Arusha-based Dutch sculptress Mieke van Grinsven. From the artist: “The first sculptures, which were made out of serpentine and opal stone from Zimbabwe, were all inspired by the form of the stones in which I saw faces every time I worked. Over the years I made about 20 torsos, from very small to lifesize. My last torsos were based on the strong and grounded stature which I feel many Africa women embody. Bit by bit my work became more abstract around the concept of ‘Energy’ and how it flows from the earth through a human and into the universe. The sculptures are normally positioned in my home garden gallery in the bush under the acacia trees. Participants can choose from a 8km or a 4km route which will start and finish at The Little Theatre Club. The walk is open to everyone – male, female, young and old! Entry fee to the walk is 30,000 TSH for adults and 10,000 TSH for children under 16 years old. “

t is yet another season of fun and excitement as young Tanzanian women vie for the prestigious crown of Miss Universe Tanzania, which will be awarded in June. Girls from Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Dodoma, Arusha, Manyara, Shinyanga, Mtwara and Kagera have been selected through an exhaustive process of scouting including one-on-one interviews with each applicant, individual catwalk performances, and body measurements. This process

has been the key to identifying successful winners like Amanda Ole Sulul, Illuminata James, Hellen Dausen, Nelly Kamwelu, and Betty Boniphace Omar in past years. The selected 20 girls from these regions will enter a boot camp where they will participate in intensive training in marketing, psychology, etiquette and other fields; various visits and rehearsals for the final event; and charity and cultural activities.

The 2011 winner, Nelly Alexandra Kamwelu, also won the Miss Southern Africa International title in 2011 which was held in Ndola, Zambia as a part of the Zambia International Trade Fair. Nelly won the main title by defeating six other contestants and also won the Best Evening Gown Award. She represented her country in Miss Universe 2011 in Brazil, Miss International 2011 in China, and Miss Earth 2011 in the Philippines. She was the first and so far the only beauty queen who has competed in three Grand Slam Pageants in a single year. represented Tanzania in the 62nd edition of the Miss Universe contest, which took take place on November 9, 2013 at Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia. After the Miss Universe Competition in Russia, Betty came back home. She has kept busy with fashion shows, including Swahili Fashion Week and Lady in Red. She’s also expecting to do charity work at Kambi Ya Wazee in Kigamboni with help from Mohamed Enterprises Ltd. Betty is currently working at AZAM TV as a presenter. “The winner of this years’ Miss Universe Tanzania will represent our country at the world’s most prestigious pageant – Miss Universe – in December (venue still to be announced). The 2012 winner, Winfrida Dominic, represented the country at the 2012 Miss Universe pageant in Vegas. She was also supposed to represent Tanzania in the Miss Supranational Pageant but withdrew at the last moment as she was not able to secure a visa for Poland. Winfrida Dominic has participated in various charity activities including several of Ally Rehmtulla’s fashion shows and Maridadi Fashion Show. Currently Winfrida spends time visiting people living with drug addictions and she plans to visit schools to educate students on the harmful effects of drugs.

A Slow Ride to Show Solidarity For Dar Cyclist By Sameer Kermalli
M
ore than 300 male and female cyclists and joggers of various ethnicities, abilities and ages participated in the bi-annual Cycle Caravan that took place in Dar es Salaam on Sunday 11th May. The event was again organised and run by Umma wa Wapanda Baisikeli (UWABA) in conjunction with the European Union (EU) in Tanzania. Participants begin at the Mnazi Moja grounds and headed to Ocean Road beach via Ohio Street and Luthuli. The riders/runners than went back to Mnazi Mmoja grounds via UN Road, Morogoro and Lumumba Streets.
The theme was “citizenship” and the guest of honour was the Deputy Minister of Law and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Angellah Kairuki. As is customary after the caravan, there were raffle draws in which several participants won bikes, tricycles, and helmets. All participants in the 15km ride/run also received reflector jackets. Participants need not register or pay any entrance fee – simply show up to ride or jog your way around the track! 42 I Dar Life I June 2014

“This cycle caravan commemorated the late Tim Manchester, an American who lived in Dar es Salaam and was killed by a speeding car near the Yacht Club while cycling, which he used as his main mode of transportation in the city. ar Life was present at the 11th bi-annual Artisan Market held in Oyster Bay, Dar es Salaam this month. The event, which is run by a team of female volunteers originally from outside of Tanzania, began several years ago with just four small vendors. The Artisan Market has now grown into a bi-annual event with over 80 vendors selling beautiful and unique crafts and goods, including jewelry, handbags and wallets, tableware, home decorations, and clothing. As one of the organizers, Dyan Larmey, explained, local artisans apply to sell their wares at the event. The organizers limit vendors to

specialty artisans involved in production and generally have high quality standards. However, a few emerging artisans are selected for each market and strategically placed alongside more experienced artisans in an effort to be inclusive and encourage artisans to further specialize and improve their products. One of the oldest and most well established collectives at the impressive event was Mama Masai, which has been in existence since 2000 and is based in Dar es Salaam. As organizer Nisha Shah-Sanghvi explained, this initiative enables approximately 200 Masai women from the Simanjaro region of Northern
themselves. Other initiatives, such as the Nuru Workshop and the Free Drug Rehabilitation Centre of Tanzania target specific marginalized populations including those living with physical and/or mental disabilities and those struggling with alcohol/drug abuse. Rooted in the Christian faith, both of these enterprises were selling items such as greeting cards, bookmarks, key chains, and jewelry made from recycled materials to support their work.
“The emphasis in these collectives is not only to make a profit to fund charitable works, but to train and empower people
to live more independent, stable, and fulfilling lives. The Artisan Market is thus a great place to support sustainable human development, while also doing some affordable shopping for unique handmade products. Rungwe Mountain Finding the Spiritual in Nature
R
ungwe Mountain is the highest mountain in Mbeya region and dominates the skyline for several kilometers. Rising above the small town of Tukuyu at 2,960 meters, Rungwe Mountain is southern Tanzania’s highest peak and third in Tanzania overall after Kilimanjaro and Meru in the north. The mountain is composed of ten or more dormant volcanic craters and domes. It is surrounded by the catchments forest reserve, which incorporates upper montane forest and montane grassland, with lesser amounts of bush land found at the streams and at the edges of montane forest. The mountain has spiritual significance to the Wanyakyusa tribe, who rely on its slopes for medicine as well as a place of prayer and worship. The forest is home to a variety of significant flora and fauna, including the threatened Abbot’s Duiker. It is regarded as an important bird-watching area, with two species listed as ‘vulnerable’. There are also two new species of primate (the Kipunji monkey and the Rungwe

Galago) and over 530 species of orchid. Catchment from the reserve feeds numerous villages and towns from Kiwira to Katumba to Tukuyu and Kandete, and many settlements in between. All streams from the north, west and southwest flow into the Kiwira River. These streams include the Marogala, Sinini, Kipoke, Kilasi and Mulagala. In the southeast begins the Mbaka River, with the Suma River feeding into it. In the east the Mrambo and the Mwatisi flow out of the reserve. All of these rivers flow into Lake Nyasa. Well-defined hiking trails have been established to enable hikers to reach the top, with the most famous route leaving from Rungwe Secondary School. Tea farm walking and forest walking through local villages and several catchments with pure clear water is also enjoyable for visitors to the mountain. Rungwe is not to be missed! Stay for a day or two and hike, relax and explore this unspoiled part of Tanzania. The best time to visit Rungwe Mountain is usually June to October, when it is dry and warmer.

dominant, the speckled mouse birds are seen building their nests. Crown-eagles, bee-eaters and rollers can be observed at Mountain Nkungwe, while in the gallery forests along Kansyana Valley crested guinea fowl reside in groups and vividly colored parrots and Ross’s Turacos flit among the treetops.
The altitude range of Mahale is reflected in its wide variety of habitats, with a floral composition that reflects a unique combination of influences associated with the eastern savannah, western rainforest and southern Miombo woodland biomes. Things to do in Mahale National Park • Chimp tracking: Tracking the chimps of Mahale is a delightful experience. World Heritage Sites From the Heights of Kilimanjaro to Depths of Ngorongoro Crater By Simon Sameja
Tanzania is a country which encompasses an extraordinary history and an abundance of natural wonders; therefore it is no surprise Tanzania has eight World Heritage Sites… but do you know them all?

KILIMANJARO NATIONAL PARK
KONDOA ROCK ART SITE
The Kilimanjaro National Park is located near Moshi, Tanzania. It is centered on the iconic and dramatic snow-clad slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, which covers an area of 753 km (291 square miles). In 1973, the mountain above the tree line was classified as a National Park and was opened to public access in 1977, but it wasn’t until 1987 UNESCO listed the park as a World Heritage Site.
The Kondoa rock art site is a series of caves carved into the side of a hill looking out over the steppe. The cave site is nine kilometers off the main highway from Kondoa to Arusha, about 20 km north of Kondoa. The site has a spectacular collection of images from over 150 shelters depicting elongated people, animals, and hunting scenes. Today many of the shelters are still considered to have ritual associations with the people who live nearby, reflecting their beliefs and cosmological traditions.

THE NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA
SELOUS GAME RESERVE
The Selous Game Reserve covers a total area of 54,600 km (21,081 square miles) and is one of largest fauna reserves of the world, located in the south of Tanzania. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to the diversity of its wildlife and undisturbed nature. The reserve is home to typical savannah animals such as elephants, hippopotami, the rare African Wild Dog and crocodiles, which are all found in larger numbers compared to any other African park. SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) boasts the finest blend of landscapes, wildlife, people and archaeological sites in Africa and is situated 180 km west of Arusha. The rich pasture and permanent water of the crater floor supports a large resident population of wildlife of up to 25,000 predominantly grazing animals. The conservation area is administered by the NCA Authority, and its boundaries follow the boundary of the Ngorongoro Division of Ngorongoro District. It covers an area of 8,288 km (3,200 square miles).
The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest park, and one of the world’s last great wildlife refuges, hence its World Heritage June 2014 I Dar Life I 97
Site status. It is most famous for its annual migration of over one million white bearded (or brindled) wildebeest and 200,000 zebra. The park covers 14,763 km (5,700 square miles) of grassland plains and savannah as well as riverine forest and woodlands. The park lies in the north of the country, bordered to the north by the national Tanzania and Kenyan border, where it is contiguous with the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Stone Town, or Mji Mkongwe in Swahili (meaning “ancient town�), is the oldest part of Zanzibar City. The old town is built on a triangular peninsula of land on the western coast of the island and was awarded World Heritage Site status in 2000. The remains of these two great East African ports admired by early European explorers are situated on two small islands near the coast. From the 13th to the 16th century, the merchants of Kilwa dealt in gold, silver, pearls, perfumes, Arabian crockery, Persian earthenware and Chinese porcelain; much of the trade in the Indian Ocean thus passed through their hands. Serious archaeological investigation began in the 1950s. In 1981 it was declared a World Heritage Site, and noted visitor sites are the Great Mosque, the Mkutini Palace and some remarkable ruins. However, the ruins are also on the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger. The list constitutes a call to improve their safe guarding and is designed to rally national and international efforts for their preservation.

RECEPE CORNER
CHILLI COCONUT CHICKEN By Rukiya Abbbas
Methods 1. Place the chicken stock in a measuring jug and crumble the creamed coconut into the stock, stirring to dissolve. 2. Heat the oil in a wok or large heavy frying pan (skillet) and cook the chicken strips, stirring, until golden. 3. Add the sliced red chilli and the spring onions (scallion)to the pan and cook gently for a few minutes, stirring to mix all the ingredients. 4. Add the peanut butter, coconut cream, lime rind and juices and simmer uncovered, stirring for about 5 minutes. 5. Serve with boiled rice, garnished with a spring onion (scallion) flower and red chilli.
