NEWS BITS Artisan Market Again a Success

A Traditional Dutch Celebration in Dar es Salaam

Dar Life was present at the 14th bi-annual Artisan Market held in Oyster Bay, Dar es Salaam. The event, which is run by a team of female volunteers originally from outside of Tanzania, began several years ago with just four small vendors. The Artisan Market has now grown into a bi-annual event with over 80 vendors selling beautiful and unique crafts and goods, including jewelry, handbags and wallets, tableware, home decorations, and clothing. The emphasis in these collectives is not only to make a profit to fund charitable works, but to train and empower people to live more independent, stable, and fulfilling lives.

To mark the first annual celebration of Kings Day (what has traditionally been Queens Day), the Netherlands Association in Dar es Salaam organized an Orange Party. The party was held at the Golden Tulip Hotel and featured a live performance by the band Flat Out! Guests in attendance ranged from Dutch expatriates living in Dar remembering home to local Tanzanians looking for a fun taste of another culture. Special thanks to the Golden Tulip Hotel for hosting, as well as the numerous sponsors who supported this memorable event!

A Night of Great Fashion on Display by Mtoko Designs

Fashionistas in the city got a chance to attend the 7th fashion show hosted by designer Salim Ali Nguba, the founder of Mtoko brand. Connector Pen

£ 14.95

This unbelievably useful gadget contains a micro USB and 8 pin charging adaptor all concealed within a black metallic pen. When extended, the Connector Pen will provide just over 21cm of cable allowing you to charge your smartphone from any standard USB port. When not in use, it is all neatly stored away inside the body of the pen and can even be used as a stylus when the pen nib is retracted. Mycestro Wearable Mouse The Mycestro Wearable Mouse really is as awesome as it sounds. With three buttons and a scroll capability, you can move your cursor without taking your hands away from your keyboard. Sure, it takes a little practice, but in no time you won’t know how you lived without it. It’s lightweight and ergonomic, controlling your cursor using natural gestures and holding your arm in any comfortable position. Perfect for planes, conferences, living rooms, server labs, and other places lacking horizontal surfaces. It’s great for presentations, too (and you’ll look magical using it). The Mycestro Wearable Mouse - always keep your mouse at hand!

You’ve gone through dozens of subpar pairs of headphones over the years. After a lot of trial and error, you’ve settled on The Perfect Pair of headphones for what you need, and you even got a backup pair in case they stop making them, because you don’t want all that work to be for naught. However, technology constantly marches on, and one direction it’s marching not all headphone manufacturers foresaw: wireless. Plug the headphones’ 3.5 standard audio jack into this little device, and it’ll play receiver for you. Go long! Well, not longer than 30 ft., but it’ll deliver your music wirelessly to your headphones pretty much anywhere within a room so you’re no longer tied down.

Dar Choral Society Per f Classical & Jazz Music Series

T

he Dar Choral Society is not just about singing classical music in Tanzania – it is about sharing our love of music by making it a bridge between all countries and religions. Originally founded in the 1940s by the European community in Dar es Salaam, the Dar

28 I Dar Life I June 2015

By John Kinga Choral Society was revived in 2009 to become a very diverse choir including many Tanzanian singers. The group is without a doubt one of the highlights of the classical music choral performance arena in Tanzania. With its long heritage of over 70 years of performance in Tanzania,

the Choir is showing all the signs of becoming a welldisciplined modern choir ushering in a new era of classical music in Tanzania.

“The Dar Choral Society held a classical music and jazz concert in the Kivukoni Ballroom at Serena Hotel on May

er formance

24th. This concert marks the ninth time that the choir has performed with an orchestra and is one of the major concerts that the Dar Choral Society hosts trice a year, generally in March, May and November.”

Covering works by Hon. Ambassador Masaki Okada for the amazing violin with Saint Saens, Strauss, Vivaldi, and Mozart, the group continued their tradition of excellence as young and energetic Hekima Raymond (Tanzania) conducted a whole choir and full orchestra of talented professional and amateur

musicians. The Orchestra managed by the choir is made up of members of the expatriate community, Tanzanians and diplomats serving the Tanzanian nation in various disciplines, hence its nickname – the ‘Choir of the World in Dar’.

June 2015 I Dar Life I 29

“The Society also aims to educate the public in the

30 I Dar Life I June 2015

“art and science” of music through their concert series, enabling people of all ages to participate in this high quality cultural activity. Their objectives also include developing the Tanzanian arts infrastructure and providing meaningful experiences through

engagement with music.” The group holds their rehearsals on Wednesdays and Fridays from 6:308:00 PM at Lady Chesham Nursery School. Special thanks to Serena Hotel, Chai Bora, Jubilee Insurance, FabCars, NHC, Hansa Diamond Motors Limite, The Citizen, and A1 Outdoor for sponsoring the Choral Society’s most recent concert.

The long-term goal of the Dar Choral Society is to combine the beauty of music using choral works and orchestra. It aims at promoting classical music to thousands of Tanzanians through concerts and recordings of music in multiple languages, including Kiswahili.

CAREER

Take Small Steps

Your Way to a Better Future By John Kinga

A

nd you cannot really say slow is better and that some things take time in this age of speed. If you do, you are at risk being looked upon with scornful eyes. How you dare even suggest that, they say. 1. Small Steps, Not Giant Leaps - I am sure you want success fast. The faster the better, right? As I get older, I am not really sure if there is a finish line. Because if there is a finish line, what then? I tend to see career or life as a series of marathons now. So, take little steps instead of one giant leap. There is no such thing as a giant leap to career success. 2. Distance Is A Series Of Small Steps - You must 48 I Dar Life I June 2015

remember that distance can be covered by a series of small steps. It can also be covered by a flutter of fast paced sprints. But the difference is, if your finish line is finite - then well, you know the type of stamina you need in order to cover that distance. Do you? That is an important question. 3. Patience - Sure, easier said than done. Patience some say is an over rated virtue. I am not sure I agree. You need lots of patience on your journey to career success. And if you buy into the small steps philosophy then you will need even more patience. Things take time to reveal themselves to you. Especially good things that appear bad initially. 4. It’s Ok To Detour When you take little steps, it is ok to take a detour. Such is life and such is work too since work is a big part of life. So, it’s ok to

5. Potholes, Humps and Uneven Surfaces It is also easier to navigate the road when you take little steps. Especially one that is filled with potholes, humps and uneven surface, which appears to never end. But it’s ok, because when you take small steps you begin to understand the character of these roads. 6. Who Knows What’s Ahead You don’t. At best you have an inkling of what you want and you pursue it. The secret is so long as you take small steps, conserve your energy and be patient, eventually the finish line will be worthwhile. That is how it is; you make a decision and take a risk. Who knows where all your effort to plan, to act upon the plan will take you? But with small steps you know you will get there.

explore a little. Make wrong decisions and learn from them. Most times, what we like, what we are good at, and our talent does not reveal itself when we do the safe thing. It rears it’s head when we least expect it.

KIVUKO:

A Play About Girls & Women’s Rights & Roles in Society

By Sauda Simba

T

he Kivuko play was staged on the 1st and 2nd of May at the Museum and House of Culture Theatre to a very appreciative audience. This production was a collaboration between Baba Watoto Centre and the Museum and House of Culture (MHOC), funded by the Swedish Institute (SI) project, Art and Culture for Democracy. In the play, Mwangaza is a young girl who is fortunate 50 I Dar Life I June 2015

enough to be selected to attend secondary school after completing her primary education. The school she is chosen to attend is far from home and so her father has to rent her a room near the school so that she can attend classes with ease. The landlord starts to make advances on her and Mwangaza is totally disinterested as she is determined to focus on her education. When

Mwangaza is unable to put up with the sexual harassment she is subjected to, her father pulls her out of school thus killing her dreams of attaining a decent education. She is forced into early marriage and refuses to bear the abuse she subsequently faces. When she is expected to stay because a dowry has been paid, how will she cross this bridge (“kivuko”) and claim her basic rights as a human being?

“Kivuko aims to highlight issues around the rights of the girl child that drive her to make hard decisions against ingrained cultural issues; the play forces us to think deeper about these sensitive issues in our society related to individual rights based on gender.”

BUSINESS

The Hidden Risks of Social Media Tips for Recruiting & HR Managers By Myron Curry

There are risks associated with social media and if employers are not careful, they can open a Pandoras box of litigation possibilities. Social networking profiles reveal private information such as age, race, political affiliation, gender, disability and religious affiliation. This type of information is usually interspersed throughout a candidate’s personal profile. There are a few disturbing scenarios that can occur when an employer does a social media search on a potential candidate. Consider the following: a recruiter does an internet search and finds the candidates picture and religious and political affiliation and uses this 54 I Dar Life I June 2015

information to weed out that particular candidate, or an internet search reveals a candidate in full regalia at a gay pride festival. What does the recruiter do with such personal information that would have never revealed itself in a traditional resume? “Social media is one of the best ways to recruit passive candidates and is an essential resource in engaging the best candidates in the marketplace. Social media will continue to evolve and recruiters must use common sense, stay compliant with EEO practices and maintain records to avoid being on the losing end of a discrimination lawsuit.” Using online information skates a thin line between invasion of privacy and an employer learning as much

as possible about a potential employee. Employers must decide if the benefits of researching candidates on social media outweigh the risks. It is critical that employers utilize legal counsel and develop written policies to determine the best protocol for using social media in recruiting efforts. The policy must clearly define the types of position that would warrant utilizing social media and specific guidelines for the type of information the employer hopes to find by using social media. A comprehensive written policy will go a long way in helping to mitigate risks that arise from social media searches. Working closely with legal counsel can go a long way in protecting a company from the potential of a case of disparate treatment and its cousin disparate impact, which can occur unintentionally when using social media for recruiting. Human Resources experts argue that using social media can open the door to disparate treatment (an intent to discriminate) or Disparate Impact, when using social media sites that do not reflect the demographics of the total population.

“Social media has forever changed the rules in the job marketplace. The amazing amount of information that is so quickly accessible provides a tempting opportunity to be a fly on the wall of an applicant’s personal life. Recruiters need to exercise caution and tread carefully. There are a plethora of social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and LinkedIn that provide instant and often personal information about a candidate.”

rom tingatinga artists to more contemporary painters, sculptors, photographers and filmmakers, Tanzania is not lacking in artistic skill and variety. While some Tanzanian artists have managed to establish themselves, many more hustle on a daily basis to be recognized for their unique talent. Dar Life caught up with the newly emerging artist Abdulla Omar , who shared with us a bit about his history, what inspires him, and how he envisions the future of art in Tanzania. Name: Abdulla Khamis Omar Profession: Realism Artist Born: 12/12/1990 Zanzibar DL - What inspired you to start painting? AO: The sheer beauty of creation was my first inspiration and continues to inspire me today. DL - How long have you been an artist? AO: I think I’ve been an artist since the day I was born (laughing). DL - What is your genre of painting and what mediums do you like to use? AO: I play around with different mediums including oil, acrylic and water colors.

I like oil colors the best in general. As for my genre of painting… I don’t limit myself to one. I am always experimenting. DL - Tell us about your first exhibition? When was it? AO: My first exhibition was in 2011 at the dhow country music academy in Zanzibar. DL - Do you work from life, or from photographs or from imagination? AO: Always from imagination, from my thoughts and reflections. The idea and process is important in my expressions and only my imagination is allowed to set borders for this. DL - What moves you most in life, either to inspire or upset you? AO: Day to day activities that are part of our culture. The tangible unity I experience among extended family, friends and colleagues. Regardless of your personal issues and responsibilities, there are routines embedded in the culture that you just know you have go through because its the right thing to do, the thing that is expected of you. For example, birth, wedding or death... of anyone you know, or are distantly related to... the emotional and financial support that

one can expect during this time is incredible. DL - Where do you feel art is going? AO: I think art is finally evolving in Tanzania. I have faith we are finally waking up from a deep sleep and starting to explore more medias and local subjects. DL - What is the role of the artist in society? AO: To act as a reflector of cultures and societies., and to be a history keeper. DL - What is the place of your work in society? AO: Telling the world an uncommon view of the people of East Africa. Subjects that are yet to be mainstream, but are yet oh so much a part of our lives. DL - What technique do you use? Which is more important to you, the subject of your painting, or the way it is executed? AO: I use oil painting- and textured brush strokes. I feel that both the subject and the execution are equally important. You may have a very important subject, but if the execution is done poorly, or inappropriately, then the message may not reach the target. DL - Do you prefer a perfect smooth technique or a June 2015 I Dar Life I 57

more energetic expressive technique and why?

almost all aspects.

AO: I like to use both a perfect smooth technique and a more energetic expressive technique. This is due to my ability to paint from different sources including imagination, life and photography. This makes my work more dynamic and flexible in

DL - Why is your work so pretty! What do you think makes it stand out? AO: Both the subject and the painting technique play a part in distinguishing my work. I usually stop when I feel a piece is done, even if the painting is not finished. I use the subject that I feel

comfortable expressing an opinion on and also common subjects that many people can relate to. To purchase any of my paintings and other exhibition queries please contact: Dullah Wise Phone: +255 (0) 774 732 929 E-mail: Dullahwise@yahoo.com.

Looking for a quick getaway to be pampered or a good detox? Why don’t you pop into a spa and be restored. OK, I know what you’re thinking, men… going to spas… ahh what a complete joke! Many men think that a spa break away will tamper with their masculinity, after all seeing a man in a fluffy white robe with cucumbers on his eyes and cotton balls between his toes isn’t the ideal Mr. Macho. Nowadays all you see is the ‘modern man’, the Prince William looka-likes on commercial breaks during half time, or the healthy looking groomed guy on the front covers of magazines like Men’s Health.” Why shouldn’t men look

elebrities from all over the entertainment industry rose to the occasion in New Africa Hotel to kick off the first ever women’s wear collection from Mtoko brand, entitled “Bodalicious”. People entered the venue and were, as customary, greeted with an amazing red carpet to accentuate their stunning looks. It was like a follow up to

Zari’s party. Among the guests was designer Mgece Makory, who rocked a dotted shirt-dress paired with flawless high heels. The evening began with a cocktail hour. From there, Bailey’s boutique under makeup artist Ndibs Edna created perfection, as some guests were treated to transforming makeovers to look their very best on a perfect night. Fashionistas like Miriam

Ndaba (popularly known as Missie Popular), former Miss Tanzania Happiness Watimanywa (2013) and Richa Adhia (2007), former model Fiderine Iranga, and models Lota Mollel and Dietrich Luhanga all attended the party to seal its status as a fashion A-listers’ occasion. The event couldn’t have been a resounding success had it not been for the work put in by the designers’ team, which was there for June 2015 I Dar Life I 67

His tremendous transition from model to designer attracted design moguls in Tanzania the likes of Mustafa Hassanali, Asia Idarous and Ally Remtulah who were all there to not only support him, but also to witness how their mentoring has paid off.” The event was kick-started with a heart-warming rendition from Tanzania’s 68 I Dar Life I June 2015

Guest designer, Martin Kadinda unveiled the door of the show by parading his newest collection of jeans known as Ng’ast. This look was perfectly teamed up with vests and hoods. At least 10 models under the leadership of legendary Neema Mbuya graced the stage to showcase the

outfits in an emphatic style. After the first session, musician Grace Matata together with her band once again took to the stage to provide some interval performance. Thereafter, the runway display continued with designer Salim Mtoko presenting his collection. 20 female models graced the stage to showcase ‘Bodalicious’, an ensemble of shorts, tops, dresses and trousers. BOOK REVIEWS

Coffee break Join Dar Life reviews editor for the pick of the books with an East African flavour By A Novel Idea

Bad Samaritans: The Guilty Secrets of Rich Nations & the Threat to Global Prosperity - by Ha-Joon Chang

It’s rare that a book appears with a fresh perspective on world affairs, but renowned economist Ha-Joon Chang has some startlingly original things to say about the future of globalization. In theory, he argues, the world’s wealthiest countries and supra-national institutions like the IMF, World Bank and WTO want to see all nations developing into modern industrial societies. In practice, though, those at the top are ‘kicking away the ladder’ to wealth that they themselves climbed. Why? Self-interest certainly plays a part. But, more often, rich and powerful governments and institutions are actually being ‘Bad Samaritans’: their intentions are worthy but their simplistic free-market ideology and poor understanding of history leads them to inflict policy errors on others. Chang demonstrates this by contrasting the route to success of economically vibrant countries with the very different route now being dictated to the world’s poorer nations. In the course of this, he shows just how muddled the thinking is in such key areas as trade and foreign investment. He shows that the case for privatisation and against state involvement is far from proven. And he explores the ways in which attitudes to national cultures and political ideologies are obscuring clear thinking and creating bad policy. Finally, he argues the case for new strategies for a more prosperous world that may actually appall the ‘Bad Samaritans’.

The Rosie Project - by Graeme Simsion

The art of love is never a science: Meet Don Tillman, a brilliant yet socially inept professor of genetics, who’s decided it’s time he found a wife. In the orderly, evidence-based manner with which Don approaches all things, he designs the Wife Project to find his perfect partner: a sixteen-page, scientifically valid survey to filter out the drinkers, the smokers, the late arrivers. Rosie Jarman possesses all these qualities. Don easily disqualifies her as a candidate for The Wife Project (even if she is “quite intelligent for a barmaid”). But Don is intrigued by Rosie’s own quest to identify her biological father. When an unlikely relationship develops as they collaborate on The Father Project, Don is forced to confront the spontaneous whirlwind that is Rosie―and the realization that, despite your best scientific efforts, you don’t find love, it finds you. “Arrestingly endearing and entirely unconventional, Graeme Simsion’s distinctive debut “navigates the choppy waters of adult relationships, both romantic and platonic, with a fresh take.” -USA TODAY

Disclaimer - by Renee Knight What if you realized the book you were reading was all about you? When an intriguing novel appears on Catherine’s bedside table, she curls up in bed and begins to read. But as she turns the pages she is sickened to realize the story will reveal her darkest secret. A secret she thought no one else knew…

“Disclaimer stealthily steals your attention and by the end holds you prisoner - a searing story that resonates long after the final page. The best thriller I’ve read this year.” -Rosamund Lupton

“Filled with humor and plenty of heart, The Rosie Project is a delightful reminder that all of us, no matter how we’re wired, just want to fit in.” -Chicago Tribune These titles and many more are available at A Novel Idea Bookstore. estled deep in the rift valley, in the remote inaccessible west of Tanzania, lie the Mahale Mountains. Mahale Mountains National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in Tanzania. The park’s 1,613 square kilometers lie on the western border with the Congo, against the remarkable shores of Lake Tanganyika. Mahale Mountains National Park, like its northerly neighbour Gombe Stream, is home to some of Africa’s remaining wild chimpanzees. Tracking these chimps in Mahale is a thrilling experience. “It is specifically for active safari; it takes place on foot through dense forest. Mahale Mountains is a prime destination for primate lovers, ornithologists, forest dwellers and nature trailers.” Mahale Mountains is a very special safari destination, set apart from alternatives in character, location and style. This isolated safari destination on Lake Tanganyika provides unparalleled opportunities to witness wild groups of habituated and un-habituated chimpanzees in an exceptional natural environment. 74 82 II Dar Dar Life Life II June June 2015 2014

The Wild Kingdom of Mahale Mountains A vast number of birds have been recorded in Mahale. On the lake shore, where there are bushes of reed, small swamp and fields, grassland species such as the red-collared widowbird can be seen. In the site of the former village of Kasiha, where palm trees are

dominant, the speckled mouse birds are seen building their nests. Crown-eagles, bee-eaters and rollers can be observed at Mountain Nkungwe, while in the gallery forests along Kansyana Valley crested guinea fowl reside in groups and vividly colored parrots and Ross’s Turacos flit among the treetops.

The altitude range of Mahale is reflected in its wide variety of habitats, with a floral composition that reflects a unique combination of influences associated with the eastern savannah, western rainforest and southern Miombo woodland biomes. And while chimpanzees are the star attraction, the slopes June2014 2015I IDar DarLife Life I I83 75 June

Things to do in Mahale National Park • Chimp tracking: Tracking the chimps of Mahale is a delightful experience. The guide’s eyes pick out last night’s nests – shadowy clumps high in a gallery of trees crowding the sky. Scraps of half-eaten fruit and fresh dung become valuable clues, leading deeper into the forest. Butterflies flit in the dappled sunlight. 84 II Dar Dar Life Life II June June 2015 2014 76

• Hiking: You can trace the Tongwe people’s ancient pilgrimage to the mountain spirits, hiking through the montane rainforest belt – home to an endemic race of Angola colobus monkey – to high grassy ridges chequered with alpine bamboo. Then bathe in the impossibly clear waters of the world’s longest, second-deepest and leastpolluted freshwater lake – harboring an estimated 1,000 fish species – before returning as you came, by boat. • Cruising: Traditional dhow cruises on the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. • Fishing and boating: Enjoy these water activities in a traditional Arab dhow on Lake Tanganyika. Best Time To Visit The best time to visit the park is during the dry season, which runs from May to October.

Getting There & Around Scheduled flights through Flight Link, Coastal Aviation and Safari Link are available from Arusha, Dar-es-Salaam and Kigoma to Mahale Mountains National Park. Also available is a National Park motorboat trip from Kigoma, which takes about 4-5 hours. Visitors can also come on the 7-hour weekly steamer trip from Kigoma, and then hire a local fishing boat for another 1-2 hour ride to the park. You can experience chimp tracking, safaris, wildlife and beauty in the Mahale Mountains by contacting: • Fox Safari Camp - M: + 25 5 (0) 754 237 422, E: fox@ tanzaniasafaris.info • Flight Link – M: +255 (0) 788 835 212 E: marketing@ flightlink.co.tz, • Coastal Aviation – M: +255 (0) 787 232 747 E: safari@ coastal.co.tz

support a diverse forest fauna, including readily observed troops of red colobus, red-tailed and blue monkeys, Angolan black and white colobus (which are considered a new species in this area). The eastern slopes of Mahale support savannah and woodland species such as leopards (increasing in number), lions, African hunting dogs, Kudus, elands, roans and sable antelopes, giraffes, buffaloes and elephants.

itulo, which has recently become a fully protected national park, is situated on the Kitulo Plateau, which forms part of Tanzania’s southern highlands. It is situated in the remote southwest corner of Tanzania on the Zambian border. The area, which is known locally as ‘Bustani ya Mungu’ (The Garden of God), is also known as the Serengeti of Flowers. As it is such a remote destination it is hardly visited. But yet the park’s importance is unprecedented as the area is a rare botanical marvel. Between December and April Kitulo hosts ‘one of the great floral spectacles of the world’. Perched at around 2,600 meters (8,500 feet) between the rugged peaks of the Kipengere, Poroto and Livingstone Mountains, the wellwatered volcanic soils of Kitulo support the largest and most important montane grassland community in Tanzania. Kitulo Attraction The park consists of three attractions. Primary among these is the Ndumbi River Valley, the real jewel of the protected area. Small streams flow from gentle hills and unite in a broad valley to form Ndumbi River, which is one of the main tributaries of the Great Ruaha River. Along the Ndumbi grows the about 40 m (131 feet) high East African juniper tree, a genus of the

cypress family. The Ndumbi Valley opens onto the large Kitulo Plateau in a sea of flowers. During the winter months, this is a paradise for birds, including those from Europe and North Africa. The park’s third area lies in the west. Here are dense forests, deep ravines and valleys. The Livingstone Mountains form the park’s border. Remote and difficult to access, this area of dense, overcast mountainous rainforest is seldom visited and little-researched. It is no real wonder, then, that in 2003 a new primate species was discovered here: the Highland Mangabey. This arboreal mangabey is brown, with a head and body length of about 90 cm (3 feet). The monkey occurs as high as 2450 m (8,000 feet) in Kitulo and on nearby Mt Rungwe, where temperatures often fall below freezing; its long coat is probably an adaptation to the cold. The Highland Mangabey is extremely rare and critically endangered, with an estimated total population of between 500 and 1,000 animals. The discovery of such a large species proves that there is still a lot to be discovered and learned from the natural world. According to researchers, the Southern Highland forests outside the park, including those of Mt. Rungwe and Kitulo, are highly degraded by illegal logging, and without prompt action the animal’s future is uncertain. Big game is scarcely found in the park but eland and some species of antelope forage on the plateau. Kitulo - a botanist and hiker’s paradise - is also highly

attractive to birdwatchers. Tanzania’s only population of the rare Denham’s bustard is resident, alongside a breeding colony of the endangered Blue swallow and such rangerestricted species as the Mountain marsh widow, Njombe cisticola and Kipengere seedeater. Endemic species of butterfly, chameleon, lizard and frog further enhance the biological wealth of God’s Garden. The plateau is also home to important animal species including national and regional endemics. Breeding colonies of Blue Swallow (Hirundo atrocaerulea) and Denham’s Bustard (Neotis denhami), as well as species such as Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni), Pallid Harrier (Circus macrourus), Njombe Cisticola (Cisticola njombe), and Kipengere Seedeater (Serinus melanochrous), contribute to the 64

plateau being an Important Bird Area. The Kitulo plateau holds the only remaining viable population of Ardeotis denhami in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. Things to do in Kitulo Plateau Good hiking trails exist and will soon be developed into a formal trail system. Open walking across the grasslands to watch birds and wildflowers. Hill climbing on the neighbouring ranges. A half-day hike from the park across the Livingstone Mountains leads to the sumptuous Matema Beach on Lake Nyasa. When to go the best time to visit the park is December and April for Wildflower displays l. The sunnier months of September to November are more comfortable for hiking but less rewarding to botanists. Conditions are cold and foggy

from June to August. Accommodation Mbeya is serviced by everything from luxury hotels to simple guesthouses, while two simple guesthouses also exist in Matamba. There is no accommodation in the park as yet, but very basic accommodation and meals are available at the adjacent Kitulo Farm. Three special campsites are planned within the park, catering to fully equipped campers. Two moderately priced church-run hostels are situated on Matema Beach.
