First We Debate, Then We Dance

A Debate & Concert Event at Alliance Francaise By Wema Kajo

12 I Dar Life I June 2016

T

he Embassy of France organized a high level debate about Women in Politics and a concert of “The Golden Voices”, which took place recently at Alliance Française of Dar es Salaam. “The debate centered on the fact that women were not allowed to vote or run for election until 1944 in France and until 1959 in Tanzania. This debate looked at the history, the influence, and the place of women in politics today.”

“The debate was followed by a concert of “The Golden Voices”, a dynamic band that inspired dance. Diem, Law and Maliya Jackson were revealed in France by the show ‘The Voice’.” Allying three different styles in duos and trios, their lively performance took the audience from rap to gospel, soul to French variety. Dar Choral Society Performance Classical & Jazz Music Series By John Kinga

T

he Dar Choral Society is not just about singing classical music in Tanzania – it is about sharing our love of music by making it a bridge between all countries and religions. Originally founded in the 1940s by the European community in Dar es Salaam, the Dar Choral Society was revived in 2009 to become a very diverse choir including many Tanzanian singers. The group is without a doubt one of the highlights of the classical music choral performance arena in Tanzania. With its long heritage of over 70 years of performance in Tanzania, the Choir is showing all the signs of becoming a well-disciplined modern choir 22 I Dar Life I June 2016

ushering in a new era of classical music in Tanzania.

“

The Dar Choral Society held a classical music and jazz concert in the Kivukoni Ballroom at Serena Hotel on May 22nd. This concert marks the ninth time that the choir has performed with an orchestra and is one of the major concerts that the Dar Choral Society hosts trice a year, generally in March, May and November.

The Orchestra managed by the choir is made up of members of the expatriate community, Tanzanians and diplomats serving the Tanzanian nation in various disciplines, hence its nickname – the ‘Choir of the World in Dar’.

The long-term goal of the Dar Choral Society is to combine the beauty of music using choral works and orchestra. It aims at promoting classical music to thousands of Tanzanians through concerts and recordings of music in multiple languages, including Kiswahili.” The Society also aims to educate the public in the “art and science” of music through their concert series, enabling people of all ages to participate in this high quality June 2016 I Dar Life I 23

Meet The 120 Artists Celebrate Their Crafts By Martina Palazzo

“More than 400 people enjoyed an evening out at Nafasi Art Space for a “MEET THE ARTISTS” event. Dancers, musicians, performers, acrobats, clowns, and visual artists showed their talents with the aim of unifying people through the languages of the body, images, and music.”

I

n one day, trained by eight Tanzanian and international trainers, the artists created a performance. They met up at 7.30 in the morning: registration, breakfast, welcome and go! For the first time in their lives, 120 artists were involved in a collective process of creation as the last phase of the “Art Against Poverty Project”, a two year capacity building program targeted for 150 young artists in Dar es Salaam coming from under-privileged backgrounds. The project, funded by the European Union and ACP Cultures was run by CEFA (an Italian NGO) in collaboration

30 I Dar Life I June 2016

with the Vijana Vipaji Foundation. It aimed to improve the managerial and technical skills of the young artists. The last day of the project was a challenge: different artists, different skills, and one day to create a unique event. Since the morning, Nafasi Art Space was full of young people learning,

improving, creating all together: traditional and contemporary dance and music, theatre, painting and clowning sessions, as well as an aerial dance workshop were organised by the trainers of ASEDEVA and Doctor Clown Italia.

All Pictures Courtesy of Sameer Kermalli

“Inside, the photo exhibition “Dreams & Selfies” filled the space with 100 artists’ portraits: Gabriele Fiolo, an Italian photographer shot artists’ dreaming young faces, frightened, happy or angry, showing their dreams and their emotions. Two members of the “Kinamama” group brought colours with some traditional kanga and vitenge for a tailoring workshop.” The night event was a platform where most of the beneficiaries of the project showed what they learned in the past two years, through a sequence of amazing performances: dancing in the air and on the top of a container, riding a 2m high monocycle, shaking in a big balloon, singing and playing new fusion melodies. Art was the medium and the message – ART has the power to connect people! For more information, please visit https://www.facebook.com/ArtAgainstPoverty, or contact cefatanzania@gmail.com

The Rocky Road Half Moon Walk & The Rocky Horror Show Walking and Playing for Breast Cancer By Sophie Buckman

N

ever did we dream that 353 people would sign up and join us on our fundraising adventure! But join us they did, and with amazing spirit we conquered our 4km and 8 km challenges and even those that took a wrong turn and stretched their anticipated 4km to 6km, did so with a smile on their faces and a determined stride! We felt the camaraderie of strangers, we made new friends, and we walked under an amazing full strawberry moon. The women involved in planning the event recognized the “importance of creating an 32 I Dar Life I June 2016

active and efficient support system which was lacking in Tanzania for breast cancer patients.” Their main mission is to enhance the quality of life of women living with breast cancer and their families through provision of counseling, education, financial assistance, and advocacy. We would like to sincerely thank everyone in Dar es Salaam that participated in the Rocky Road Half Moon Walk & The Rocky Horror Show and for the companies that donated gifts, shirts, food and water for the walkers.

“We walked for the fighters, we walked for the survivors and we honoured the taken. In doing so we raised money for the Tanzania Breast Cancer Foundation and these funds will now be used to purchase much needed prosthesis and bras as well as continue the projects of the foundation throughout Tanzania. Apart from The Rocky Road Half Moon Walk, we also had The Rocky Horror Show which was a two-act gothic musical written by Richard O’Brien and staged by the Dar es Salaam Players.”

Biannual Artisan Market Supporting Tanzanian Artisans By Ashley Collins

This is a hopeful place, it gives us hope to keep doing what we do when we see people excited about the things we create.” – Local Artisan

38 I Dar Life I June 2016

O

n 14 May 2016, Oyster Bay Shopping Centre hosted the biannual Artisan Market for the 15th time. The Centre has supported this popular market for nine years and continues to attract large numbers of customers and vendors. Co-founder Sona Shah remarked on the initiative’s founding, “This market has its roots in friends getting together and creating a unique experience for the

vendors and the community alike, and is a completely not for profit, volunteer-run project.” As another one of the organizers, Dyan Larmey, explained, local artisans apply to sell their wares at the event. The organizers limit vendors to specialty artisans involved in production and generally have high quality standards. However, a few emerging artisans are selected for each market and

As the market expands each year, the field grows more competitive, and standards leap higher and higher. This creates diversity of product and a drive toward higher quality, both in terms of customer expectation and artisan workmanship. Speaking for the volunteer team, Shah states, “As the organizers, we have seen a remarkable trend towards a better variety and higher quality of products made in Tanzania. Artists that once exhibited here now sell to the USA. Others have found themselves in June 2016 I Dar Life I 39

The Artisan Market stimulates Tanzanian commerce and creativity, as the competitive and bustling atmosphere allows vendors to make large profits and gain invaluable exposure to shoppers from all over Dar es Salaam. Shah explained, “We have vendors from Mtwara, Arusha, Mwanza and several other places from all over Tanzania, with our reputation growing further afield and people from Kenya and Uganda expressing an interest to attend.” Vendors are carefully selected from a thorough application process based on quality, type of product, and location – and most vendors are Tanzanian in order to support national commerce.”

incredible collaborative projects that have led to export. Funds from sales go towards newer product development. It is wonderful to see the how things are developing!” The opportunity for artisans to exhibit their products on a scale of this size has undoubtedly led to the growth of Tanzanian businesses, which are now able to test their mettle on an international level. But there is also a deeper 40 I Dar Life I June 2016

purpose accomplished by the Artisan Market:

The emphasis in these collectives is not only to make a profit to fund charitable works, but to train and empower people to live more independent, stable, and fulfilling lives. The Artisan Market is thus a great place to support sustainable human development, while also doing some affordable shopping

for unique handmade products. In the words of one vendor, “This is a hopeful place, it gives us hope to keep doing what we do when we see people excited about the things we create. I hope to keep coming back to sell my products.” Dar Life warmly congratulates the organizers and the vendors. Be sure to keep an eye out for the next Artisan Market in November 2016!

Dar Drivers Back On Track After MMSC Rally

By Suleiman Jongo

Historical sites of Bagamoyo — Dar es Salaam is back in the race for the 2016 National Rally Championship (NRC) title following Jamil Khan’s triumph at the Alliance MMSC Rally on Sunday.”

Mzizma Motor Sports Club hosted a national championship rally, which was sponsored by Alliance Autos this year. This rally took place in Bagamoyo at Kaole, Zinga, Mageraza, Parokia, Fukayosi and Kondo. It was a challenging rally for all competing drivers because of tactical roads and weather conditions.

Jamil, who has claimed the Mzizima Rally title for three years in a row, notched 25 points that put him right behind Moshi’s Guljit Dhani (27) and Gurpal Sandhu (33) of Arusha.”

Khan and Dharam Pandya, who finished second on Sunday, suffered a big blow in the season opening race as they 44 I Dar Life I June 2016

Second-placed Sandhu, who won 18 points after finishing second in the opening round, got 15 points and now has 33 points after finishing third over the weekend.

Pizza Hut Delivers Pizza to the A Record-Breaking Delivery in Tanzania By Rachel Swatman

C

limbing a mountain works up an appetite, so mountaineers will undoubtedly be overjoyed to learn that Pizza Hut now delivers to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

“Now that’s what we call a PR stunt! Pizza Hut has earned a Guinness World Record for delivering the highest altitude pizza to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. The stunt was organised by Pizza Hut Africa and Yum! Brands in the USA to mark the launch of Pizza Hut’s first franchise in Tanzania and the 100th country that the Italian food chain now has an operation in.” The challenge began on May 5th, 2016 where a pizza was made in Pizza Hut’s new Dar es Salaam restaurant and then flown to Kilimanjaro. From here it was transported to the trailhead and then carried in an insulated, battery-heated pack, which was especially designed to keep the pizza horizontal and fresh!

It took four days for the pizza to travel from the new restaurant to the top of the highest mountain in Africa. The pizza traveled approximately 745 km from where it was made to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro by car, plane and on foot by Mr. Consea Dissa and several members of his climbing team. The record culminated with the General Manager of Pizza Hut Africa Randal Blackford, a group of employees and a team of experienced guides celebrating on the summit of Kilimanjaro with a slice of pepperoni pizza on May 8th, 2016.

3.

o the Top of Mount Kilimanjaro Blackford was quoted as saying: “Nothing tastes as good as pizza after hiking throughout the night to the highest peak in Africa!”

“The original idea for the record attempt was to helicopter the pizza to Base Camp – Barafu at 4,600m – and then walk it up to Uhuru Peak, but due to the thin air the helicopter risk was deemed too high. The team had also thought of using a drone to deliver the pizza but due to high winds this idea was also aborted. Eventually the team settled on the approach that was finally taken.” 1. 2. 3.

Pizza Hut designed a special pizza box backpack for the record-breaking delivery. Trail guides prepare to deliver Pizza Hut pizza to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Moshi, Tanzania. (Pizza Hut) Pizza Hut Africa and Yum! Brands have just made history with the highest altitude pizza delivery on land, after General Manager of Pizza Hut Africa Randall Blackford, a group of employees, and a team of experienced guides delivered a pizza to the top of Africa’s tallest mountain—and set a new Guinness World Record while they were at it.

The President of Pizza Hut International, Milind Pant, had this to say about the achievement: “We are thrilled to bring Pizza Hut to Tanzania and believe there is no better way to celebrate our 100th country milestone than by setting a Guinness World Records title for the highest pizza delivery on land to Mt. Kilimanjaro.” The record was not all about PR though. Pizza Hut used the opportunity to raise money for the Msasani Primary School in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – the town where the new Pizza Hut has opened. June 2016 I Dar Life I 51

To adjudicate the record, an official from the Guinness World Records, Pravin Patel, was flown to Tanzania and ensured the record attempt followed all official guidelines.

Prevent Procrastination Do It Now By Long Yun Siang

1. There Is Only NOW: Realize this - there is no yesterday, there is no tomorrow. There is only NOW. And now determines the tomorrow you will have. If you delay doing something, all you will 56 I Dar Life I June 2016

doing is messing up your tomorrow. Things get piled up for tomorrow. By the same token, you are also messing up tomorrow’s yesterday. Remember, there is only now and now is the all-important time slot to help you relieve all your stress. Now is the special formula to ease all your tension on your huge to-do list. If you set into motion something now on what needs to be done, slowly but surely the motion gains momentum and tasks will be completed. The idea is to start doing. 2. There Is NO Better Time: It’s all an excuse. I have been there. You start telling yourself, “I will start on Monday; it’s a nice day to start as it’s the start of the week.” Or whatever similar excuses you cook up. There are no perfect dates and no excellent timeslots for things to be done. You have to do it when it comes up. Push once and you will never stop pushing.

4. Do All It Takes: If at first, you do not succeed to prevent procrastination - write it over and over again. What does that mean? In your to-do list, keep writing it each time you update the list. Do not allow yourself the excuse of dropping it from the list. There are only so many times you can write the item without starting to work on it. 5. Think About the Repercussions: If positive reinforcement doesn’t work on you, and you still refuse to start on something, then try negative reinforcement. Think about all the repercussions it will bring for procrastinating. Nagging? A bad evaluation? Stress from the fact that you will be thinking about it every day? If you want to prevent procrastination, you have to do it yourself. No one can help you. Just DO it.

All Picture Courtesy of John Victor

H

ow do you prevent procrastination? By doing it NOW, as soon as you remember it and as soon as you reach the item in your to-do list. Do not give yourself any excuse or reason why it has to wait or why it can wait. Once you get started doing, there is no stopping the habit. It takes good selfdiscipline in order to prevent procrastination. It’s difficult telling yourself to do it now. But this behavior can be habituated just as you get into a habit of procrastinating. You can also habituate yourself into doing this immediately. So how do you start this habit of doing things now? These are the few things you need to learn and remember.

3. Once You Do It You Will Be OK, Seriously: You want to prevent procrastination? Here’s my challenge to you. Pick an item that you have been procrastinating for a long time. Start on it now. Once you start, you will realize the freedom that comes with doing something you have delayed. It makes you feel good. You want to repeatedly allow yourself to feel this feeling. Then you will make it a habit to do things quickly as they come up. As you do so you are – it is positive reinforcement at work.

BUSINESS

Dealing with Difficult Employees By David G. Javitch, Ph.D.

I

How to Handle Them 1. Don’t ignore the problem. Assuming that the employee provides value to the company and possesses redeeming qualities, there are ways to deal with difficult employees. Most often, managers will simply ignore problematic staffers. Managers who live by this rule hope the problem will just go away; that these people will somehow turn themselves around or stop being troublesome. Ignoring the situation is the wrong solution to what could likely become a progressive problem. 2. Intervene as soon as possible. It is important to take action as soon as the negative behavior pattern becomes evident--when left untouched, this problem will only escalate. Occasionally, the difficult employee has no idea that his behavior is a problem or that others react negatively to his actions. This is because most people tend to put up with the annoying behavior and “go along to get along.” Just like

60 I Dar Life I June 2016

the organization, the manager or someone from human resources should begin to coach the difficult employee in displaying more acceptable and appropriate behaviors. The employee needs time and practice in “trying on” new, more suitable behaviors. HR and/or the manager need to provide specific feedback to this employee on the success or failure of his efforts. some managers, employees want to be liked by colleagues and subordinates and are therefore reluctant to speak up when a problem arises. Ultimately, it is the manager’s responsibility to take the appropriate action to correct the problem. 3. Research the problem personally. Armed with accurate data and examples, the manager needs to then take this person into a conference room or office--away from others--and calmly address the issue. To begin, the manager needs to ask the employee if he is aware of any ongoing issues to determine if the difficult person is aware of the problems. If the employee is “unaware,” the manager needs to describe the unacceptable behavior. The employee might interrupt to disagree or deny the existence of any issues. Nevertheless, the manager needs to continue by giving clear examples of the unwanted behavior. The manager also needs to allow the employee to respond to the allegations. 4. Help the problematic employee to get back on track. Once the employee begins to understand that these negative behaviors are real and experienced by others in

5. If all else fails, termination may be necessary. If the employee continues to deny his inappropriate behavior and refuses to try to improve the situation, the manager needs to place this person on the fast track towards termination. Often this involves recording a series of well-documented verbal and then written feedback about the behavior. Strictly following company protocol, there should be a period for the employee to address the behavior. If this trial period does not result in improved behavior, then the employee needs to be terminated. Most employees will recognize the negative behavior and will at least attempt to turn it around. This is especially true during tough economic times when unemployment is high and finding a new job is difficult. In any case, the manager needs to follow company guidelines in recognizing the unacceptable behavior, providing direct feedback, providing input to try to turn it around and ultimately taking action in a timely manner. Not doing so is a disservice to the problematic employee, other employees and the success of the organization.

t seems that some people are just born to be difficult. We have all worked with them and most of us dislike them. Difficult people are easy to recognize--they show up late, leave early, don’t turn their work in on time and have an excuse for every failing. Wait, there’s more. These difficult people harass you and others, ask too many self-explanatory questions, neglect details, distract you and repeatedly challenge you and others. When dealing with problematic employees, productivity decreases, frustrations rise, morale goes down and customers and vendors get upset.

Skin Care During Ramadan Glow Inside & Out This Holy Month By Wema Kajo

D

uring the holy month of Ramadan, our routine and diet completely change. Taking care of your skin to ensure you still stay glowing and bright can sometimes be a source of concern during this time. It is important to know that the sudden change in dietary habits combined with long periods of fasting can have a negative effect on your skin. Continue with a daily regimen of skin care. Cleansing, toning and moisturising are essential during this time period, so ensure you do this 62 I Dar Life I June 2016

twice daily. Exfoliate your skin twice a week. For your face we recommend the Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel, which, will smooth, brighten and clarify the complexion. This unique non-granular exfoliating cream contains nourishing milk protein, antioxidants and marine algae to moisturize, repair and protect the skin. For your body we recommend Elemis Lime and Ginger Salt Glow, which stimulate the metabolism and tones the body while it purifies and cleanses the skin.

Fasting dehydrates the skin and it is very important to make sure you rehydrate after Iftar. Hydration should take place internally and externally. Between Iftar and Suhoor drink at least eight glasses of water in addition to other fluids. To rehydrate your skin we recommend Elemis Moisturising Mask, which will leave your skin super-moisturised and enriched. For the body we recommend Elemis Frangipani Monoi Moisture Melt. The oil has long-lasting hydration properties to seal in moisture and leave skin silky soft.

HISTORICAL SITE

Historical Sites Travel through History By Issa Mohamed

T

anzania has a long history of human habitation stretching back to our most distant ancestors. The so-called ‘bantu migrations’, occurring between 3,000 and 5,000 years ago, brought agriculture and pastoral knowledge to the area as competing groups spread over the country in search of fertile soil and plentiful grazing for their herds. European missionaries and explorers mapped the interior of the country by following well-worn caravan routes, including Burton and Speke who in 1857 journeyed to find the source of the Nile. Traditional ways of life remained largely intact until the arrival of German colonizers in the late 19th century. On the Swahili Coast, Indian Ocean trade began

Around the 4th century AD, coastal towns and trading settlements attracted bantu-speaking peoples from the African hinterland. They settled around mercantile areas and often facilitated trading with the Arabs and Persians, who bartered for slaves, gold, ivory, and spices, sailing north with the monsoon wind.

“On the Swahili Coast, Indian Ocean Trade began as early as 400 BCE between Greece and Azania, as the area was commonly known.”

Between the 13th and 15th centuries, the settlements of Kilwa Kisiwani and the Zanzibar Archipelago reached their peak, with a highly cosmopolitan population of Indian, Arab and African merchants trading in luxury goods that reached as far as China. The completion of Portuguese domination in 1525 meant that trade, for a short time, was lessened, but rival Omani Arab influences soon took control of the caravan routes and regained complete control of the islands, even going so far as to make Zanzibar the capital of Oman in the 1840’s. In the late 19th century, British influence in the Zanzibar Archipelago, in contrast to German influence on the Tanzanian mainland, slowly suppressed the slave trade and brought the area under the influence of the Empire. Local rebellions in German East Africa, most notably the Maji Maji rebellion from 1905 to 1907, slowly weakened the colonizer’s grip on the nation and at the end of the First World War Germany ceded Tanganyika to English administration. Under the leadership of Julius Nyerere of TANU, popularly referred to as Mwalimu or ‘teacher’

Tanganyika achieved full independence in 1962. Meanwhile, a violent revolution in Zanzibar ousted the Omani sultancy and established a oneparty state under the Afro-Shirazi party in 1963. A year later, the United Republic of Tanzania was formed, unifying the Tanganyika mainland with the semi-autonomous islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago, and merging TANU and the ASP to form CCM, Chama cha Mapinduzi, the Party of the Revolution which rules Tanzania to the present day.

Kitulo National Park

12

Kitulo is where plant lovers come as close to paradise as they can get. Welcome to Bustani ya Mungu - The Garden of God, also dubbed the Serengeti of Flowers. And rightfully so. More than 350 different vascular plants make this one of the world’s ultimate floral displays. Make sure to witness it in the rainy season, when the spectacle is in full bloom. Yes, some small yet hardy mountain reedbuck and eland still roam the open grassland. And yes, you hear the shrieks of Angola pied colobus and blue monkey emanating form the forest. Even the endangered Kipunji monkey – Africa’s first new species of monkey for over 20 years – has been discovered in the area, together with a very tiny forest-dwelling bush-baby. Yet Kitulo isn’t the kind of park to visit for your game spotters’ list; it is a botanist and hiker’s dream, with a floral diversity that can be overwhelming.

A floral marvel that is also captivating to birdwatchers The rounded hills and vast, montane and Afroalpine grassland – the most important of its kind in Tanzania – are dotted with the most striking flowers you can imagine, amongst which 45 kinds of orchid. Over 30 of these are endemic to Tanzania, 15 to the Kitulo/Kipengere range and 10 to the Kitulo/Uporoto range. And it’s not just the blooms that catch your eye, the Kitulo Plateau and surroundings form the essential water basin for the Great Ruaha River. The thundering water, cascading down in a spectacular waterfall in the Numbe Forest makes visiting the eastern corner of the park a must.

It won’t come as a surprise that this floral marvel is also captivating to birdwatchers. Here, you stand the rare chance of spotting the massive Denham’s bustard. Or you might be treated to a breeding colony of the endangered blue swallow, or come face to face with special species such as the Kipengere seedeater, shorttaled pipit, churring cisticola and mountain marsh widow. And just when you think you have seen it all, you could stumble upon endemic species of butterfly, lizard and frog. Even the Poroto three-horned chameleon - one of the rarest on the continent – is found here. Kitulo truly is a Garden of God.

Kitulo is a botanist and hiker’s dream, with a floral diversity that can be overwhelming • Kitulo National park was established in 2005 for it’s botanical importance, a first for tropical Africa. • It covers 466 km2 and stretches 37 km from north-west to south-east. • Height: up to 2,700 m (the highest peak lies just outside the park). • Temperatures vary greatly: from 23-25°C (daytime) and 10 °C (night-time) in September – October, to 13-15 °C (daytime) and 0 °C (night-time) in June – July. • Dry season: June – mid-October, wet season: late October – May. • Best time to visit: December – April: wildflower peak. September – November: drier and sunnier, so more comfortable for hiking, but less rewarding to botanists. • The park is very remote, accessible by road in a 4x4 vehicle.

• Most common route: Dar es Salaam to the village of Chimala (815 km) on tarmac, followed by 45 km on rough road to Mwakapembe gate (total 860 km/2 days); the park’s HQ lies 10 km before Mwakapembe gate, at the village of Matamba. • There are plans for a western gate at Kikondo, that will be accessible through Mbeya town and the Tukuyu road. • Alternative: from Songwe international airport at Mbeya take the TAZARA railway (three times a week); by road it takes 123 km, through Chimala.

Accommodation Inside the park: two public and special campsites on the plateau (bookings through the Park). Outside the park: simple guesthouses in the village of Matamba, 10 km from the gate, numerous (more luxurious) accommodation in Mbeya city and two moderately priced church-run hostels on Matema Beach.

Here, you stand the rare chance of spotting the massive Denham’s bustard

What to do Guided walking safari, bird watching, hiking to Mount Rungwe and Mtorwi or go for a half -day hike from the park across the large uniform bamboo zone of the Livingstone Mountains – home of some of the most special mammals on earth – that leads to the marvelous Matema beach on Lake Nyasa. Travel tips

Language Swahili is the National language of Tanzania, however English is widely spoken, but learning a few words of Swahili can be useful and will be appreciated greatly by the local people.

Currency Tanzanian shilling (Tsh/Tzs) divided into 100 cents. Major foreign currencies – such as US$, Euro and travellers cheques are accepted and are convertible at banks and Forex bureaus in the main towns and tourist areas. Apart from most high-end lodges, credit cards are not widely accepted. Some banks in major cities offer ATM for credit/debit cards. Parks fees are payable using special TANAPA cards available at local CRDB & Ezim bank. Alternatively payment by Mastercard & Visa card are accepted. Avoid changing money in the street.

Major Airlines KLM, Swiss air, Qatar, Emirates, Oman, South African, Ethiopian, Kenya Airways, Turkish, Egypt, Rwanda air, Uganda air, Precision air, Fast Jet and Air Tanzania.

Health Yellow fever vaccination is required if travelling from susceptible countries. Malaria is endemic but is preventable: use insect repellant, cover up at sundown, sleep under a mosquito net and take anti-malaria prophylactics as advised by your doctor. Climate

Electricity

Generally dry and hot with cool nights/mornings in June – October; short rains from November to mid-December and long rains March – May, but the seasons can vary. The coastal strip is hot and humid all year round. Temperatures on Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru drop to below freezing.

230V, but power failures, surges and dips are common. Bring a universal adaptor and a torch (flashlight) or headlamp.

Clothes

Car hire

Pack lightweight, washable clothes plus a sweater for early morning game drives, as well as a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Long sleeves and trousers in light-coloured fabrics help discourage insect bites. Shorts for women are acceptable. Women should carry a wrap to cover legs in the villages and towns as revealing clothes can cause offence, especially in Zanzibar and Muslim areas. On the beach and within the confines of beach hotels normal swimwear is acceptable. If you have plans to climb Kilimanjaro or Meru, bring thermal underwear, light layers, a sweater, rain jacket, proper socks and sturdy boots.

Self-drive vehicles are available mainly for local errands or tarmac use. 4x4 vehicles for safaris usually have to be hired with a driver.

On safari Distances in Tanzania are vast and travel by road can be wearing. Plan to spend more time in fewer parks. You’ll see more and won’t return home exhausted. Keep your distance from animals and be quiet to avoid distressing the wildlife. Follow instructions of rangers or guides. Don’t leave your vehicle in the parks except in designated places. Keep to recognised tracks to avoid damaging vegetation.

Photography Protect your camera from dust and keep equipment and film cool. It is courteous to ask permission before photographing local people. If you intend to take a lot of people pictures, please bring an instant printer with you so that you can leave a picture with the people you photograph.

Insurance Take out travel insurance to cover loss of baggage or valuables, personal accident and medical expenses.

Tipping Tipping is not obligatory, but a tip for exceptional service.

Time

Cuissine Local and international cuissine are served in hotels and lodges.

Driving People drive on the left side of the road. An international licence is required. Plan long safaris carefully, ensuring your vehicle is road worthy. Please bring two spare tyres, an operational jack and tool kit. Carry extra fuel, spares and water.

Travel with children Tanzanians love children and are especially helpful to mothers. However, canned baby food, powdered milk and disposable nappies may not be available outside major towns.

Visas Check current requirements with the nearest Tanzanian High Commission, embassy or consulate, or your travel agent.

Security Tanzania is a generally safe country, but do use common sense. Keep an eye on your belongings. Don’t walk in the towns or cities at night – take a taxi instead. Don’t carry cameras or large amounts of cash and beware of pickpockets. Use hotel safety deposit boxes to safeguard valuables and obtain a receipt. Leave valuable jewellery at home.
