THE ARTISAN MARKET IN DAR ES SALAAM Showcasing Tanzania’s Finest Handmade Art & Craft By Ashley Collins
THIS PLACE GIVES US HOPE TO KEEP DOING WHAT WE DO WHEN WE SEE PEOPLE EXCITED ABOUT THE THINGS WE CREATE.” – LOCAL ARTISAN
16 I Dar Life I JUNE 2019
O
n 11th May 2019, Oyster Bay Shopping Centre hosted the biannual Artisan Market for the 20th time. The Centre has supported this popular market for 13 years and continues to attract large numbers of customers and vendors. The co-founder, Sona Shah, remarked on the initiative’s founding, “This market has its roots in friends getting together and creating a unique experience for the vendors and the community alike, and is a completely not for profit, volunteer-run project.” On this wonderful event, local artisans apply to sell their products at the event, while the organizers limit vendors especially to artisans who are involved in production and generally have high quality standards. However, a few emerging artisans are selected for each market and strategically placed alongside more experienced artisans in an effort to be inclusive and encourage artisans to further specialize and improve their products.
THE ARTISAN MARKET STIMULATES TANZANIAN COMMERCE AND CREATIVITY AS A COMPETITIVE AND BUSTLING ATMOSPHERE THAT ALLOWS VENDORS TO MAKE LARGE PROFITS AND GAIN INVALUABLE EXPOSURE TO SHOPPERS FROM ALL OVER DAR ES SALAAM. VENDORS FROM DAR ES SALAAM, ZANZIBAR, MTWARA, IRINGA, MBEYA AND SEVERAL OTHER PLACES FROM ALL OVER TANZANIA HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE EVENT. THE ARTISAN MARKET’S REPUTATION IS GROWING FURTHER AFIELD, PEOPLE FROM KENYA AND UGANDA ARE EXPRESSING AN INTEREST TO ATTEND. VENDORS ARE CAREFULLY SELECTED FROM A THOROUGH APPLICATION PROCESS BASED ON QUALITY, TYPE OF PRODUCT, AND LOCATION IN ORDER TO SUPPORT NATIONAL COMMERCE. MOST OF THE VENDORS ARE TANZANIANS. `
JUNE 2019 Dar Life I 17
The emphasis in these collectives is not only to make a profit to fund charitable works, but to train and empower people to live more independently, stable, and fulfilling. The Artisan Market is thus, a great place to support sustainable human development, while also doing some affordable shopping for unique handmade products.
Dar Life warmly congratulates the organizers and the vendors. Be sure to keep an eye out for the next Artisan Market in November 2019!

Artisan market this year has a wider audience, with many Tanzanians attending to see different creations from people all over Africa. The unique and diversify of the Artisan Market had created a platform for most Tanzanians to be able to enjoy different products from Tanzania, as well as other countries. The opportunity for artisans to exhibit their products on a scale of this size has also undoubtedly led to the growth of Tanzanian businesses, which are now able to test their mettle on an international level.

Men’s Health

he common belief that infertility is a “woman’s problem” is based in myth. While factors exclusively related to the female generally account for infertility in about 40 percent of couples, another 40 percent of infertility cases can be linked directly to the male. The remaining 20 percent of cases can be traced to some combination of male and female, as well as unknown, factors. (Note: Infertility is defined as the inability to get pregnant after one year of unprotected sexual intercourse). If you happen to be a male currently looking to start a family with your partner, there is much you can do right now to improve your chances of getting pregnant as a couple. However, even if you are not thinking of having children any time soon, your overall level of fitness now can greatly affect fertility later in life. Here, we provide some helpful tips for all our men who want to get fit and fertile.
40 I Dar Life I JUNE 2019
Get moving
Men who engage in moderate exercise routines (about 1 hour of exercise, 3 times per week) have been found to have better sperm results than men who do not exercise or exercise less than that amount per week (Vaamond et al. 2009). Regular exercise in moderation helps keep body weight at normal levels and relieves stress and anxiety, both of which contribute to proper production of testosterone and healthy sperm. Aim for about one hour of moderately intense cardiovascular exercise three to four times a week.
Get plenty of rest
Conversely, men with very heavy exercise schedules generally have less healthy sperm (Vaamond et al. 2009). Perhaps surprisingly, intense exercise with little rest between extreme workouts may result in cellular damage, which can impair both the quality and quantity of
sperm. While it only takes one sperm to get pregnant, sperm must be strong and healthy to travel and penetrate the female egg. To allow different parts of your body to rest and restore themselves, alternate between endurance workouts, strength training, and flexibility exercises. Make sure to allow about 2 days of rest between strength training sessions in particular.
Get loose
Mentally, set aside time to relax and release stress. Do what works for you, whether it’s meditation, prayer, deep abdominal breathing, or listening to calming music. Physically, wear boxers and loose clothing when possible, especially when exercising. Avoid excessive use of saunas and hot tubs. This will keep the testicles cool and functioning properly.
Get clean
Excessive smoking and drinking have been linked to a host of negative health outcomes, and both have detrimental effects on a couple’s ability to conceive. Smoking tobacco has been linked to low sperm counts and sluggish motility, while long-term use of marijuana can result in abnormally developed sperm. Alcohol can also reduce the production of normally formed sperm needed for a successful pregnancy. Stay away from steroids as well, as they have been found to cause testicular shrinkage, which can result in infertility. As much as possible, avoid environmental toxins such as chemicals, radiation, heavy metal exposure, and pollution, which have all been linked to low sperm production.
Get your vitamins
Eat lots of foods high in antioxidants (carotenes, vitamins A, C, E and selenium) such as green leafy vegetables, kale, carrots, citrus, broccoli, cauliflower and yams. You may want to consider taking supplements, especially if your vitamin C or zinc levels are low. Vitamin C (2,000 to 6,000 milligrams daily) helps prevent sperm from clumping or sticking together, thus improving the chances for fertility. Zinc supplementation (100 to 200 mg daily) has been shown to increase testosterone levels, sperm count and sperm motility. High zinc sources include oysters, organ meats, lean beef, turkey, lamb, herring, wheat germ, legumes and nuts. Other nutrients that have been shown to improve sperm counts include essential fatty acids (9 to 12 grams daily), chromium (1,000 mcg daily), selenium (200 mcg daily), copper (2 mg daily), vitamin E (800 IU daily), coenzyme Q10 (400 mg daily) and B-complex vitamins (50 mg daily).
Important note: If you and your partner are having extended difficulty conceiving, you should both see a doctor to check for any underlying treatable medical conditions.

HOT SEASON BEAUTY UPDATES Maintaining your cool By Amby Lusekelo

ummer fashion inevitably means showing more skin with shorter hemlines and little to no sleeves. This prospect of showing more skin is usually scary for many however, as we always emphasis, wear what is comfortable to you. However, you must let your skin breathe. Choose underwear in natural fabrics, preferably cotton or silk. Keep your clothes simple and avoid anything that is too tight. Opt for drawstring pants or skirts, loose tunics and comfortable, elasticated waistbands. Choose cotton, linen or silk for comfort and avoid manmade fibers. Teaming up your outfit 42 I Dar Life I JUNE 2019
with the right number of accessories also goes a long way in ensuring you are ready for the heat. Oversized sunglasses, big hair bands, bangle bracelets, print Hobos and even scarves are big this season. Grab a slouchy hobo handbag in a cute, colorful print. These bags will jazz up your wardrobe and are perfect for weekend wear. You can carry these bags with everything from shorts and a tee to your favorite dress. One area that requires approach with caution is make up. Summer heat and dust may leave you looking like a fright! Another summer challenge is maintaining your hair. During the summer, get trims every four weeks to prevent split ends. In addition to this, ensure you treat your hair at least once a week to ensure it is protected from the rising temperatures as well as the dust.Remember wet hair is more prone to breakage so use pins to help create undoes. Dampen hair with water before swimming and comb in a conditioner after swimming.
Whichever way you chose to keep yourself looking fashionable and cheek during this hot season, remember to keep yourself protected. Direct UV light has harmful effects such as skin cancer so be safe by opting to stand under a shade instead of directly under the sun. Use moisturizer sparingly under your makeup and avoid applying it altogether to your nose and forehead if you have an oily or combination skin. It’s a myth that heavy powdering absorbs sweaty makeup. The initial benefit of powdering disappears very quickly in hot weather. Stick to a light dusting over the central panel of your face. This will absorb shine but leave you with a natural, fresh look. Avoid heavy makeup, particularly matte foundation, as it will run and leave you with a smudged look.
The better you protect yourself, the healthier and better looking you will be.

anzania is rich with artists of all caliber ranging from those tingatinga artists we’re all come acquainted to, to those more mainstream. They all represent a Tanzania from their individual views, backgrounds and beliefs. Dar Life caught up with the newly emerging artist Foibe who is taking a more active and vocal approach to showing her work.
Name: Foibe Makundi Profession: Visual Artist Born: 1974 I was born in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania in 1974. My parents are both from the Marangu, Moshi region in Kilimanjaro. In 1987, my family relocated to Geneva, Switzerland. My interest in Art started in 2nd grade. At 18, I moved to the USA to pursue further studies in the Arts. In 1997, I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Arts and in Art History from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I lived and practiced in the Washington, DC until 2009, when I returned back to Tanzania. I now live in Dar-es-Salaam and teach at Ardhi University. I am currently painting a serie on the of "Waswahili: Watu wa Pwani", part of continuous studies of East African people and Cultures. DL - What inspired you to start painting? Foibe - Wanting to get accurate depiction of people, kijiji, mlima. My older sister was good at drawings people. I asked her to help me... class mates found out, in proving them wrong, that it was I who did the work. Redrew the image...and again and again... realizing its getting better...then started drawings more and more... I think we started Sanaa period on 2rd grade, which became one of my favorite classes. In 1987, my family moved to 46 I Dar Life I JUNE 2019

Geneva, Switzerland, where I began to receive a formal training in Fine Arts, along with the other Science and Math and Language courses. DL - How long have you been an artist? Foibe - 29 years. DL - When did you start? Foibe - 2nd grade in Chang'ombe primary school (8yrs old in 1982). DL - What is your genre of painting and what mediums do you like to use? Foibe - Life Drawings (Figurative/Portraiture, Still Life and Landscape). DL - Tell us about your first exhibition? When was it? Foibe - First Exhibit - Group Exhibit- Student's Work while in High School, International School of Geneva, Switzerland ... probably 1991 or 1992, First Solo Exhibit - Christensen Center Art Gallery, Augsburg College, Minneapolis, MN, USA – 1997.

DL - Do you work from life, or from photographs or from imagination? Foibe - I use all means – My favorite is drawing and painting from a model. However, many of my recent work were photographs that I modified in photoshop until I captured the lighting and the tones. Then painted the new images. DL - What moves you most in life, either to inspire or upset you? Foibe - Day to day activities that are part of our culture. The tangible unity I experience among the extended family, friends and colleagues. Regardless of your personal issues and responsibilities, there are routines imbedded in the culture that you just know you have go thru because its the right thing to do, the thing that is expected of you. For example, birth, wedding or death... of anyone you know... or are distantly related to... the emotional and financial support that one can expect during this time. DL - Where do you feel art is going? Foibe - I think art is finally evolving in Tanzania. I have faith we are finally waking up from a deep sleep and starting to explore more medias and local subjects. DL - What is the role of the artist in society? Foibe - Reflection of the Cultures and the Society. 48 I Dar Life I JUNE 2019
History keeper. DL - What is the place of your work in society? Foibe - Telling the world an uncommon view of the people of East Africa. Subjects that are yet to be mainstream, but are yet oh so part of our lives. DL - What technique do you use? Which is more important to you, the subject of your painting, or the way it is executed? Foibe - Oil painting- textured brush strokes. I feel that both, the subject and the execution, are equally important. You may have a very important subject, but if the execution is done poorly, or inappropriately, then the message may not reach the target. DL - Do you prefer a perfect smooth technique or a more energetic expressive technique and why? A more energetic /expressive technique Foibe - I think it makes a painting, a canvas come alive. DL - Why is your work so pretty! What do you think makes it stand out? Foibe - Both the Subject and the painting technique. The technique - I usually stop when I feel a piece is done, even if the painting is not finished. I use the subject that I feel comfortable expressing an opinion on and also common subjects that many people can relate to. To purchase any of my painting and other exhibition queries please E: foibe@aol.com.

AGA KHAN HOSPITAL
UNDERGOING US$ 83 MILLION (TZS 192 BILLION) EXPA By Olayce Steven Lotha
Aga Khan Health Service has undertaken a sizeable expansion of it’s hospital in Dar es Salaam, recently completing a Phase II US $83.5 million expansion (Tzs 192 billion) that will serve over one million patients in the country each year. The expansion, which was funded through a grant from Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), transforms the hospital from a 70-bed facility to a leading 170- bed tertiary care, referral and teaching hospital. The hospital will now serve as an integrated health care medical facility for the country and the rest of sub-Saharan Africa. The Phase II expansion also includes an expansion of 35 outreach health centres throughout the country, 23 of which are already operational.” 54 I Dar Life I JUNE 2019

Century of Experience Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHST) established its first health centre in Dar es Salaam over 90 years ago and has since, steadily enhanced its service offerings to become one of the leading state-of-theart hospitals in the region. Building on the legacy of AKDN – the Network founded by His Highness the Aga Khan- , its hospitals in Dar es Salaam, as well as Mombasa and Kisumu in Kenya reach over millions of patients across East Africa and the larger African continent.
AKDN operates one of the largest non-profit private healthcare systems in the developing world, with 17 hospitals and over 450 other health facilities providing quality health care to over 5 million people annually. These include 14 ISO-certified and three JCI-accredited hospitals in recognition of meeting international quality standards in health delivery and hospital care. With a network of health facilities in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, AKDN hospitals and centres, which are run and managed by Aga Khan Health Services are renowned as a preferred
destination for modern healthcare, attracting patients beyond the East African region. Today, the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam – part of a global chain of hospitals – is undergoing rapid expansion as it moves to position itself as a remedy for the increasing number of patients seeking specialized care abroad. Cutting Edge Health Technology The Aga Khan Hospitals known worldwide for their cutting-edge technology and modern healthcare are consolidating their foothold in East Africa with sustained modernization in both JUNE 2019 Dar Life I 55
Through improvements in its human resource base and training facilities, the Hospital hopes to have a significant impact on the overall quality of health care in Tanzania. Along with more traditional services, such as family medicine, child and maternal care, the development of new specialist programmes in cardiology, oncology and neurosciences will assist in addressing the high increase in mortality caused by chronic diseases, both in Tanzania and across subSaharan Africa.
Expansion of the Phase II building at AKHST includes not only structural expansion with an upsurge in its footprint in terms of bed capacity, more operating rooms, more intensive care facilities and top-quality VIP rooms, but also robust strengthening of existing clinical services. In addition to excellent diagnostic services such as cardiac catheterisation and nuclear medicine, the Hospital now offers over 30 clinical specialties and subspecialties, including Cardiology, Oncology, Family Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Gynaecology, Nephrology, Neurosciences, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics and Neonatology.
56 I Dar Life I JUNE 2019
Furthermore, state-of-theart technologies including pictorial archiving and communication systems (PACS), a radiology information system (RIS), pneumatic tubes transport system and centralized patient monitoring computer systems have also been introduced, all to support the Hospital’s overarching goal of improving the quality of care. This is the first and only full-fledged PACS and RIS system in Tanzania, as well as within the global AKHS network, to supports its overall goal of improving quality of care and enhanced patient centred care. Installation of PACS and RIS has been highly innovative and has already offered several advantages – the most immediate and tangible of which has been a 20 percent reduction in stationary cost. At AKHST, the pneumatic tube system ensures fast, spontaneous and safe transport of specimens to the laboratory from all over the hospital, as well as the transport of medicines from pharmacy to all inpatient areas. This rapid transport system is complemented with computer software, such as laboratory information management systems (LIMS) for laboratory results reports and computerised physicians order entry for sending medication orders and treatment instructions to pharmacy electronically.
This has led to reduction of time patients spend in the hospital without loss in quality of care, reduction in staff costs for hiring porters and at the same time increased efficiencies. “The Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam also offers a continuum of care coordinated across its Primary Medical Centres throughout the country, including Dodoma, Iringa, Mbeya, Morogoro, and Mwanza, as well as Outreach Health Centres in Arusha, Dar es Salaam’s Mbezi Beach, City Centre, Masaki, Mikocheni and Tandika, Bunda – Mara, Bukoba – Kagera, Kahama Shinganga.” At each level of care the focus is on providing services that are needed and wanted by the community whilst building linkages within the system while at the same time significantly raising local standards. Building Capacity The Hospital also serves as the training site for the Aga Khan University Postgraduate Medical Education Programmes in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and General Surgery leading to a Master of Medicine degree. In addition, it is the only private hospital to provide Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children accredited internships for medical and pharmacy graduates.

multiple sexual partners, and first having sex before the age of 15 remain significant challenges in the country’s HIV response. Comprehensive knowledge about HIV is also low – less than half of young people have adequate knowledge.
PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE. APPLIES TO HIV AS WELL, PRIMARY PREVENTION OF THE DISEASE IS THE BEST. IF INFECTED, EARLY DETECTION AND TREATMENT HELPS ONE SAVE FROM SERIOUS ILLNESSES WHICH MAY EVEN BECOME DIFFICULT TO MANAGE LATER.
However, improvements have been made in recent years. In 2014, the percentage of young girls having sex before 15 decreased from 11% to 9%. Condom use has also increased, but is still inadequate, with only 34.1% of young men, and 41.5% of young women using a condom in the same year.
Despite the numbers, Tanzania has done well to control the HIV epidemic over the last decade.
A baby can become infected with HIV in the womb, during delivery or while breastfeeding, If the mother does not receive treatment, 25 percent of babies born to women with HIV will be infe cted by the virus. With treatment that percentage can be reduced to less than 2 percent.
In 2016, an estimated 4.7% of adolescents (aged 1019) were living with HIV in Tanzania. Young people engaging in risky sexual behaviour (such as not using condoms), having 58 I Dar Life I JUNE 2019

Zambia, and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to Lobito in Angola on the Atlantic Ocean. This anticipated, epic journey from the eastern side to the western side of the African continent will be

departing trip on the second day of August taking the same route. REPORTS FROM ROVOS RAIL HEADQUARTERS IN PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA SAID THAT THE INAUGURAL VOYAGE WILL SET OFF ON JULY 16 FROM DAR ES SALAAM TO INCLUDE A VISIT TO THE SELOUS GAME RESERVE IN SOUTHERN TANZANIA, A FLY IN TWO NIGHT SAFARI IN THE SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK IN ZAMBIA AND A CITY TOUR OF LUBUMBASHI IN DR CONGO.
Rovos Rail Communications Manager, Brenda Vos-Fitchet was quoted saying that the 15-day epic expedition traversing Tanzania, Zambia, the DR Congo and Angola will be the first in history of this part of Africa that a passenger train will travel from the eastern to western trail connecting the Indian Ocean port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and the Atlantic Ocean port of Lobito in Angola. “Travelling rates in this
epic, vintage journey start at US$12,820 per person sharing, vary according to suite type and are fully inclusive of accommodation, meals, all alcoholic and other beverages, room service, laundry, an onboard historian and doctor as well as excursions and the fly-in two-night safari including accommodation, meals, bottled water and a limited wine selection as per released itinerary.” “To be able to introduce a new adventure after 29 years in operation is exciting and presents me
with a refreshing operational challenge. It’s taken over two years to acquire permission and have our proposed itinerary approved by the respective authorities”, said Rovos Rail Owner and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Rohan Vos. “My team and I have flown across our borders on a few occasions to meet the relevant officials, drive the route and conduct site visits in an effort to smooth the way as best we can for our band of intrepid travelers who will hopefully join us on this expedition,” he said.
Rovos Rail also operates a luxury train from Cape Town to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, along with several other journeys. The vintage train made its first maiden, northward trip to Dar es Salaam in July 1993 where tourists enjoyed travelling in old, Edwardian, 21 wooden coaches with a capacity to accommodate 72 passengers altogether. The old wooden coaches are aged between 70 to 100 years, and have been furnished into passengerworthy carriages. JUNE 2019 Dar Life I 71

erched at around 2,600 meters (8,500 feet), between the rugged peaks of the Kipengere, Poroto and Livingstone Mountains, the well-watered volcanic soils of Kitulo support the largest and most important grassland community in Tanzania. The Highland Mangabey is extremely rare and critically endangered, with an estimated total population of between 500 and 1,000 animals. The discovery of such large species proves that there is still a lot to be discovered and learned from the natural world. According to researchers, the Southern Highland forests outside the park, including those of Mt. Rungwe and Kitulo, are highly degraded by illegal logging, and without prompt action, the animals’ future is uncertain. Big game is scarcely found in the park but eland and some species of antelope forage on the plateau. The plateau is also home to im80 I Dar Life I JUNE 2019

Breeding colonies of Blue Swallow (Hirundo atrocaerulea) and 'HQKDP V %XVWDUG 1HRWLV GHQhami), as well as species such as Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni), Pallid Harrier (Circus macrourus), Njombe Cisticola (Cisticola njombe), and Kipengere Seedeater (Serinus melanochrous), contribute to the plateau being an Important arid area. Conditions are cold and foggy from June to August. Accommodation Inside the park: two public and special campsites on the plateau (bookings through the Park). Outside the park: simple guesthouses in the village of Matamba, 10 km from the gate, numerous (more luxurious) accommodation in Mbeya city and two moderately priced church-run hostels on Matema Beach. the Highland Mangabey. This arboreal mangabey is brown, with a head and body length of about 90 cm (3 feet). The monkey occurs as high as 2450 m (8,000 feet) in Kitulo and on nearby Mt Rungwe, where temperatures often fall below freezing; it’s long coat is probably an adaptation to the cold.
