an East African Union in the mold of the European Union. Throughout his visit, President Gauck emphasized the themes of genuine cooperation and partnership.

“In the presence of Tanzanian president Jakaya Kikwete during at the State

House in Dar es Salaam, President Gauck delivered high praise for Tanzania, identifying the country as a source of stability in the region and a reliable economic and political partner for Germany. His main criticisms were in the form of calls for

The First Lady of Germany Ms. Daniela Schadt, also had the opportunity to visit the Wanawake na Maendeleo (WAMA) Foundation, which was started by Tanzanian First Lady Mama Salma Kikwete in Dar es Salaam. The site visit gave Ms. Schadt an opportunity to learn more about the work that the WAMA Foundation

is doing to advance the rights and improve the health and wellbeing of women and girls in Tanzania. Ms. Schadt congratulated Mama Kikwete and her team particularly for the support the provide orphans in obtaining their secondary education and beyond. in Dar es Salaam as part of her efforts to survey the sexual and reproductive health scene in Tanzania. After traveling to Zanzibar on an Azam Marine boat for a day trip, President Gauck met with religious leaders in an effort to promote interreligious dialogue and cooperation as part of efforts to alleviate various social ills and foster an atmosphere of peace on the Island. The high level meeting was organized by the German Embassy, the Zanzibar Interfaith Centre (ZIC) and the KAS office in Dar es Salaam. The German President was accompanied to the meeting by his delegation. Members of the Zanzibar Leaders for Peace and Tranquility Committee also took part. Notably present was Sheikh Fadhil Suleiman Soraga, Secretary General in the office of the Mufti, who was seriously injured during an acid attack in December 2013. According to the Committee, “The meeting with the German President came at an opportune time. During election year 2015 Zanzibar and Tanzania Mainland are facing major challenges due to potential political tensions and conflicts.” 16 I Dar Life I March 2015

While at the African Court of Human Rights in Arusha, President Glauck called for every African citizen to have access to legal recourse in the court. In a speech to representatives of the East African Community (EAC), which encompasses Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda, he spoke about the need to include the “young generation” in the integration process, as they are the ones for whom “today’s promises may become reality”. His speech touched on the strong economic performance of the EAC, the importance of peace and stability for the region, and the value of human rights and solidarity.

“President Gauck’s visit aptly concluded with a safari in the worldrenowned Serengeti National Park, which includes two biosphere reserves and two World Heritage sites. The occasion marked the first time a German President visited Serengeti National Park, a park that is linked to Germany in many ways. In 1959, Bernhard Grzimek

brought both the Serengeti and the threats it faces to the attention of the global public. In the decades that followed, Grzimek, together with former Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere, established Serengeti National Park and a conservation ethos in Tanzania.” The German President and First Lady were appropriately awed by the beautiful setting and majestic animals in the park, but their safari was not strictly for pleasure. Government funds channeled through the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) provided for the building of a poaching surveillance center that will soon be in operation in the park. On the occasion of the President’s visit, FZS Executive Director Dr. Christof Schenck ceremonially handed over the newly built Operations Centre to TANAPA Director General Alan Kijazi. President Gauck publicly commented on his gratitude “to all the people who have banded together to ensure that this great gift to humankind is preserved. Long may it remain so.”

Run Kilimanjaro! A Wonder of the World Marathon

“Having grown tremendously from 350 participants at its launch in 2003, Kilimanjaro Marathon 2015 will set a striking record on 1 March as 6000 runners are expected to be a part of the iconic sporting event. With several foreign runners participating and the event being recognized globally, it is intriguing to consider what attracts an international spotlight on this miniscule town on the world map and how the Kilimanjaro marathon has become more than just a one-day racing event.

I

f you are new to this event, know that it is something to behold. In fact, Runner’s World recently labeled the race as the second “Wonder of the World Marathon.” Yes, we are talking about Kilimanjaro Marathon 2015. This year marks the 13th edition of the annual event, and with it a host of new surprises. Kili Marathon will take place on March 1st in the small town of Moshi, Tanzania, which is located on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. This year Kili Marathon runners will have four categories for participants of different caliber: 5 km Fun Run, the Gapco 10 km Disabled Wheelchair and Tricycle/ Hand-cycle Race, the Tigo 21.1 km Half Marathon, and the Kilimanjaro Premium Lager 42.2 km Full Marathon. Runners are guaranteed unbelievable scenery as they travel through Tanzania: farms, villages, banana and coffee plantations, and forests. The beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro itself towers above the runners for almost the entire duration of the race. And runners need not worry about safety, as the race is well managed. It has official marshaling and time-keeping, and refreshment points are located at regular intervals along the race route. Runners enjoy good-tarred roads to ensure comfort in running. The race is always a source of excitement for local residents. This easily translates into enthusiastic cheers, well wishes and ample support to runners fortunate enough to take part in this amazing event.

“John Addison, the Managing Director of Wild Frontiers, the organization that manages the event, said this year’s race has various attractive incentives expected to inspire an increase in the number of participants.” March 2015 I Dar Life I 23

The winners of the Kili Lager 42.2km full marathon for both men and women will be presented with four million shillings each, and the first runner-up will receive two million shillings each while the second runner-up will take home one million shillings. The winner of the Tigo half marathon for both categories will be awarded two million shillings each while the first and second runners up will be awarded one million and half a million shillings each. And for those competing in the disabled event, Gapco has pulled out all the stops. They will donate 20 brand new wheelchairs to the first 20 finishers and a total of 7.8 million shillings to the 1st through 10th placed winners. In order to encourage more disabled athletes to participate, GAPCO will also provide a token of Tsh. 10,000/= to every participant who finishes the race, as well as t-shirts and other prizes.

All Picture Courtesy of Wild Frontiers (Pty) Ltd

Addison added that medals and T-shirts will be available for the first 400 runners who finish the 42.2km race and the first 2,800 runners who complete the half marathon, plus the first 80 runners who finish the disabled race. The first 2000 participants to finish the 5km Fun Run will be presented with T-shirts sponsored by Grand Malt.

24 I Dar Life I March 2015

If you’re not a professional runner, don’t let this concern you. Of course, the Kilimanjaro Marathon includes wellseasoned participants, but it also includes a great number of runners who just want to share in the event’s excitement and fun. Plus, if your legs are not marathon ready yet, you can always opt for running the half marathon (21.1 km) or the 5 km Fun Run! All these events would not be possible without the support of some amazing sponsors, including Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, Tigo, Gapco, Kilimanjaro Water, UNPFA, FNB, CMC Automobiles, Simba Cement, TPC, RwandAir, KK Security, and Kibo Palace and Resorts.

Each of their concerts is different, with the group constantly evolving in their musical improvisation, presentation and stage skills. Over the years, each member has had his own parallel experiences: Jacquis Ralf as a jazz guitarist; Bema, Zix and Toky as founding members of M’boutah group, well-known nationally; and Hery for many years working as a sound engineer and drummer with various local and national artists. Their first album, “To Kultur”, was released in February 2011. In 2014, they were among ten groups selected to participate at the Libertalia Music Festival, which aims to promote Malagasy artists on the international scene. The delegation of Alliance Françaises in Madagascar then proposed a national tour, whereby their popularity throughout Madagascar rocketed. Mpamanga is now crossing borders and ready to break onto the international scene. “Mpamanga means ‘nomads’ in the Malagasy language. Barazani aims to open up opportunities for the East African artists to have space and facilities to show their talents in the fields of music, dance, acrobatics, film and video, painting, sculpture, fashion and poetry. The projects financed by Switzerland prove to be calamitous and the workers’ revolution that suddenly breaks out doesn’t help, obliging our heroes to disregard first the radio’s management, and then their own codes of conduct. SEXUAL & REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

What’s In a Kiss? More Than You Realize… By Dr. Mercola “In the average lifetime, most people spend 20,160 minutes kissing. A passionate kiss can burn up to five calories per minute. The longest kiss, recorded in Thailand in February 2013 by Guinness World records, lasted 58 hours, 35 minutes and 58 seconds. But these philamatology factoids don’t really explain why people kiss.”

K

issing not only feels good, it’s good for you. It relieves stress and releases epinephrine into your blood, making it pump faster, which signals a reduction of LDL cholesterol. But while “swapping spit” in today’s culture most often denotes sexual attraction, there’s more to it than that: “Mucous membranes inside the mouth are permeable to hormones such as testosterone. Through openmouth kissing, men introduced testosterone into a woman’s mouth’ which ‘is absorbed through the mucous membranes… and increases arousal and the likelihood that she will engage in reproductive behavior.” But because some cultures don’t include kissing in their mating rituals, it’s possible the first kiss was given by a mother to her child rather than being shared between a couple. Psychologists conjecture that kiss-feeding – exchanging premasticated food from one mouth to another

38 I Dar Life I March 2015

was how babies received the nutrients needed to grow up strong and healthy (as they’re not always available from breast milk). This jump starts the digestion process and makes vitamins like B-12 more easily absorbable. “Actress Alicia Silverstone’s blog recently included a video of herself kiss-feeding her child, nicknamed Bear, offering a clue to the meaning of mouth-to-mouth contact from a child’s perspective: “I just had a delicious breakfast of miso soup, collards and radish steamed and drizzled with flax oil, cast iron mochi with nori wrapped outside, and some grated daikon. Yum! I fed Bear the mochi and a tiny bit of

How Cuddling, Breastfeeding and Natural Weaning Relates to Babies’ Emotional Health There’s a school of thought that contends that the cuddling, visual attachment and emotional bonding that takes place between mother and child during breastfeeding and/or kiss-feeding helps the child establish healthy attitudes toward food later in life. Subsequent baby-led weaning (BLW), which includes pre-masticating regular whole foods in lieu of serving processed baby foods and spoon feeding, is said to: • Enhance mealtime enjoyment • Help reduce the child’s obesity risk • Promote natural jaw development

• Improve eye-hand coordination and dexterity But it’s also said to help children develop confidence and security in their future relationships. Of course, what you feed your baby after breastfeeding also is crucial. Merging from breastfeeding on demand to gradually introducing regular foods is what humans have adapted to do. Interestingly, babies up to four months old can only focus on objects eight to ten inches from their faces – about the same distance between infants and their mother’s face when breastfeeding – suggesting that facial recognition is the beginning of emotional, not just physical, attachment. The phenomenon of pareidolia – seeing faces in flowers and cloud formations – may reinforce the possibility that the search for emotional attachment may be one of mankind’s most elemental instincts. M

ost of us have so many responsibilities in life that we forget to take care of ourselves. And while it’s hard to prioritize something like relaxing while you have so many other priorities, self-care is an important aspect of stress management.

“A massage, facial or other forms of pampering revitalize you inside and out, and taking time out to treat your body like the temple it is has other benefits.” Self Care is Good for Your Emotional Health: Taking time out to care for yourself can remind you and others that you and your needs are important, too. Having a wellcared-for body can make you feel good about yourself and your life, and conveys to others that you value yourself. This can contribute to long-term feelings of wellbeing. 50 I Dar Life I March 2015

Self Care Makes You a Better Caretaker: People who neglect their own needs and forget to nurture themselves are at danger of deeper levels of unhappiness, low self-esteem and feelings of resentment. Also, sometimes people who spend their time only taking care of others can be at risk for getting burned out on all the giving, which makes it more difficult to care

Taking a break amidst a tub of warm bubbles or under the warm hands of an experienced masseuse can help you feel like you’re escaping a stressful reality and taking a mental and emotional vacation. It triggers the relaxation response, and allows you to come back to the reality of your life feeling refreshed and relaxed. Self-care Provides Space for Time Alone: While different people have varying degrees of introversion and extroversion, having some time alone is important for most people’s functioning. When you’re relaxing by yourself, it’s much easier to slip into a state of quiet meditation, enjoy some self-reflection, or let your problems work themselves out in the back of your mind, without taking all of your focused concentration.

superiors and to your team. Become known for setting challenging goals and completing projects on-time and on-budget – with measurable results. 4. Begin building your own in-house contact network. Cultivate good relationships with everyone – including the employees above and below your level. Get to know people’s names. Reach out to the mail guy, the security guard, the IT guru, your manager’s executive assistant – everyone! You want business friends and supporters in a 360-degree arc around you. 5. Make sure to also sit down during those first 90 days and create an “individual development plan” for yourself and your role, which includes your

“Experts such as Michael Watkins believe that you have 90 days in a new job to make your impact and create the permanent impression that people in the organization will have of you and your leadership capabilities.” Here are six priorities to focus on: 1. Establish positive relationships with your new colleagues and develop good communication habits to maintain those relationships. Be honest, open, friendly, reliable and clear. Be outgoing and introduce yourself to coworkers (don’t wait for them to approach you). 2. Develop a reputation for producing tangible results, for keeping commitments and for meeting deadlines. Immediately start a “success file” and track your accomplishments and contributions. Make note of the positive feedback you get from others in conversation and in writing – from clients, managers, colleagues, vendors, etc. 3. short-, mid-, and long-term goals. This is critical to ensure that the job you landed becomes the job you love. 6. Maintain a healthy balance between your work life and your private life. Make sure that you don’t “go overboard” with your enthusiasm for your new job. Family time, hobbies and “recharging your batteries” are all part of your long-term professional effectiveness and success. In summary, you must focus on garnering respect, visibility and credibility during your first 90 days on the job. The precedents you establish during this period will tend to last for your entire tenure at that organization. So this “thumbprint period” is critically important to your long-term success!

Of course, you can also find local restaurants serving chipsi, ugali and nyama choma, freshly grilled meat. Dar has an electric live music scene. Traditional taarab orchestras rub shoulders with dance bands playing jazz, salsa and afro funk. Rap, hip-hop and bongo flava artists collaborate and perform around the city. Tanzania’s best and most inventive musicians are showcased in May at the B-Connected Festival in Mnazi Moja Grounds. For film lovers, November sees Dar host the annual Euro African Film Festival. “DAR HAS AN ELECTRIC LIVE MUSIC SCENE. Jane Austen: Seven Novels (A Beautiful Leather-bound Collectors’ Set) In a publishing career that spanned less than a decade, Jane Austen used the romantic endeavours of her well-plotted characters as a stage from which to address issues of gender politics and class-consciousness rarely expressed in her day. The novels included in this beautiful leather-bound collection -- “Sense and Sensibility”, “Pride and Prejudice”, “Mansfield Park”, “Emma”, “Northanger Abbey”, “Persuasion” and “Lady Susan” -- represent all of Austen’s mature work as a novelist and provide the reader with an introduction to the world she and her memorable characters inhabited. “Jane Austen: Seven Novels” is part of Barnes & Noble’s series of quality leather-bound volumes. Each title in the series presents a classic work in an attractively designed edition bound in genuine leather. These books make elegant additions to any home library. Tanzania Tourism Set For ITB Exhibition In Berlin Participants Aim to Attract More European Tourists to East Africa

By Appolinary Tairo

“Tanzanian participants will join other participants from the regional block known as the East African Community to market the regional tourist 70 I Dar Life I March 2015

attractions under an umbrella of the “East African Expo.” Participants at the ITB in Berlin will include travel agents, tour operators, accommodation establishment operators, and airline operators. Several Tanzanian government institutions have also been registered to participate at the ITB event. Leading tourist marketing and development institutions that will attend ITB from Tanzania are Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA); Tanzania National Parks; Zanzibar Commission for Tourism; and the Tanzania Tourist Board, the official tourist marketing institution under the government of Tanzania.” As a long-standing partner to Tanzania, the German government is currently supporting wildlife

conservation projects in southern Tanzania’s Selous Game Reserve and Serengeti National Park in the north. Ngorongoro Crater, which is among the most preferred tourist attractions in Tanzania, is also the burial site for the famous German conservationist, Professor Bernhard Grzimeck, and his son, Michael Grzimeck. Tanzania Tourist Board’s marketing executive, Mr. Geofrey Meena, said Germany has been a good source of tourists visiting Tanzania every year. The number of German tourists visiting Tanzania skyrocketed from 36,626 in 2012 to 53,951 in 2014. Beyond the national parks, the most attractive sites that draw Germans to Tanzania include the old German buildings, cultural heritage sites, and Mount Kilimanjaro expeditions.

ermany leads European nations for the highest number of citizens who travel internationally for their holidays and vacations. In fact, most of them venture to destinations outside of Europe, including Asia and Africa. Tanzania’s wildlife and natural beauty continues to make it a leading African nation for attracting German vacationers. Given this reality, over 120 executives from 57 travel and tourist companies in Tanzania will attend the annual International Tourism Exhibition (ITB) in Berlin to showcase their services and products from 4-8 March this year.

The Unknown Mtwara Tourism splendor

T

anzania is so rich in tourism attractions that some suffer from the fate of going unnoticed. One such destination is Mtwara on the southern circuit which the Tanzania Tourist Board is vigorously committed to promote through national, regional and international corridors. Located in southern Tanzania, Mtwara has so much to offer in terms of history, culture, and irresistible landscape from the hinterland to the palm tree fringed beaches along the Indian Ocean, that every tourist would wonder why he or she had not been there much earlier. The destination’s documented history dates back to the German colonial era. Notably, is the old Prison which was built in the 1880s and is now partly in ruins. After the First World War, the structure was used by the British as Customs Office, Post Office and a Police station.

78 II Dar Dar Life Life II March Septembe 86 20152014

Special on Mtwara attraction menu is the Msimbati Bay offering a variety of activities including motor vehicle driving on its beach. This area is also home to Mnazi Bay Marine Park which is a paradise for water sports lovers. Wildlife enthusiasts are assured of game viewing thrills in Africa’s biggest trans-boundary game reserve, the Selous, which crosses the Ruvuma River into Msumbiji. Seventy kilometers from Mtwara town lays a spring fresh water Lake, Kitele, which has a unique characteristic of not being fed by any river or valley. On a cultural line, Mtwara is the spot that over time attracted so many visitors into settlement leading to the establishment of special Swahili Coast culture spiced by the world famous Makonde carvings, named after the superb and unique artistic wood carvers of the Makonde

tribe. As the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) breasts itself up to promote tourism in the southern circuit, Mtwara looks all set to receive more visitors. This is due to the fact that the age old communication problem linking it with Dar es Salaam is being solved with the on-going construction of the Kibiti-Lindi road and the completion of the Mkapa Bridge across the Rufiji River. This is on top of the existing access by air and by sea. To cap it all, the people of Msumbiji, south of Mtwara, will now find it easy to cross the Ruvuma River into Tanzania after the construction of the Umoja Bridge, to pay homage to the fallen heros of the Mozambique Liberation War at Naliendele Cemetery (15 kilometers from town) where FRELIMO (Mozambique Liberation Front) and Uhuru monuments have been erected. Visitor accommodation in Mtwara is bound to increase as the Mtwara Corridor area opens up for economic growth. The Mnazi Bay gas project, the port expansion programme to serve land locked southern African countries and the revival of the Mtwara/Nachingwea railway line, constitute the right menu for new hotel investment ventures. The railway line will also boost the cashew-nut industry and connect the planned Liganga coal mining and Mchuchuma iron ore project areas to the Indian Ocean.

RECEPE CORNER

Cheesy Bread By Rukiya Abbas

INGREDIENTS 4 oz shredded Mozzarella cheese (1 cup) 8 oz shredded sharp cheddar cheese (about 2 cups) 1/4 to 1/2 cup chopped green

onion (to taste) 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1 Tbsp sour cream (optional) 1-2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 stick unsalted butter (1/4 cup, 2 ounces), softened to the

Method

point of being slightly melted 1 loaf of French or Italian bread (I used Ciabatta)

Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 5 minutes Yield: Makes 20 slices

In a large bowl, mix together the cheeses and the green onion. Stir in the mayonnaise and sour cream. In a separate small bowl blend the butter and garlic until smooth. Add the butter mixture to the cheese mixture. Preheat broiler. Slice loaf of bread in half horizontally, lay crust side down on a foil-lined baking sheet. Spread cheese mixture over the bread. Place under the broiler until nicely browned, about 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from broiler and let sit for 5 minutes until cool enough to handle. Slice the bread with a bread knife. Serve.

Variations Try mixing in other ingredients with the topping mixture, such as chopped black olives, chopped canned artichoke hearts, minced shrimp, or crab meat.
