Dar’s Favourite Festival Series Celebrating Sounds From Across The East African Region By Darragh Amelia

24 I Dar Life I MARCH 2019

O

n February 2nd, Dar’s favourite festival series that celebrates sounds from across East Africa returned to Nafasi Art Space – and it was MAJOR!

LIVE PAINTING, AN ENGAGING PANEL ON WOMEN IN MUSIC, AND VISUAL ART EXHIBITIONS BY NAFASI’S OWN PROFESSOR JENGO, MASOUD KIBWANA, AND MINZI TOBIAS WERE JUST A FEW OF THE ACTIVITIES THAT MADE THIS EDITION EXTRA SPECIAL. HOWEVER, MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE, WIKIENDI LIVE IS KNOWN FOR CURATING AN IMPRESSIVE LINEUP OF MUSICIANS.

WHEN I LOOK AROUND, ALL THIS IS ART - THE SETTING, PEOPLE. WIKIENDI LIVE IS A GREAT PLATFORM FOR ARTISTS AND I’M SO HAPPY TO BE HERE – THE ONE-AND-ONLY, KING KIKI

This time around, the evening commenced with a stunning performance from Dar es Salaam’s Asedeva dance group, that commented on the damaging effect of drug addiction to the society. They were followed by a moving piece from a Congolese artist currently visiting Nafasi through a collaboration with the African Human Rights Network. Once the dance-floor cleared, the attention was transferred to the stage where musicians from far and wide wow’ed the audience. Local artists included Emmanuel Mopao, setting the mood with his combo of Swahili rhythm and classical jazz, Wamoto, a trio of up-and-coming singeli artists, and the iconic King Kiki of Tanzania’s golden era of rumba. The not-so-local Sophie Nzayisenga, joining the Wikiendi roster from Rwanda, took to the stage solo where she performed mesmerising work upon the Rwandan inanga. Like many traditional instruments, the inanga is historically

THE NEXT EDITION OF WIKIENDI IS SET TO TAKE PLACE ON JUNE 29TH, AT NAFASI ART SPACE. KEEP AN EYE ON THE WIKIENDI LIVE SOCIAL MEDIA TO LEARN MORE. UNTIL THEN RECORDINGS AND LIVE PERFORMANCES FROM THE EVENT CAN BE FOUND ON THE FESTIVALS EVER-GROWING SOUNDCLOUD + YOUTUBE PLATFORMS.

played by men in Rwanda – but, under the tutelage of her father, Sophie has become the only woman in the world to master it’s strings. Local legends, JAGWA, closed the night out with memorial performance in honour of their lead singer, Jackie Simela, who passed away in December 2018. Jackie’s son joined the band for the final song of their set – donning Jackie’s signature raspy vocals and humble stage presence. This performance, bringing much of the audience to tears, served as proof that Jackie still exists in some form, through the impact that he has had on younger generations – a compelling reminder of the importance of preserving and sharing Tanzanian cultural heritage.

THIS EDITION OF WIKIENDI LIVE WAS PRODUCED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BRITISH COUNCIL AND BROUGHT TOGETHER TWO PRODUCERS FROM THE UK, THE INCREDIBLE AMBASA MANDELA OF KENYA, LEAH + PENDO ZAWOSE OF THE TANZANIAN ZAWOSE LEGACY, AND MBEYA’S STARS ON THE RISE – WAMWIDUKA. A FUSION OF SOUNDS FROM EAST AFRICA AND THE UK – THESE ARTISTS CREATED SOMETHING VERY UNIQUE OVER THEIR TWO-WEEK COLLABORATION, AND THE RESULT WAS EXPLOSIVE WHEN PERFORMED LIVE.

THE MNARANI MARINE TURTLE CONSERVATION POND IS A COMMUNITY BASED NGO ESTABLISHED IN 1993 AS AN EFFORT TO CONSERVE THE POPULATION OF SEA TURTLES NATIVE TO ZANZIBAR ISLAND. I

t may come off as a surprise to you but among the most fascinating events to ever happen in February, is the turtles day! Initiated by Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond, the event was exclusively for releasing sea turtles from the natural pond, back to the sea. This year, the annual release was held on

40 I Dar Life I MARCH 2019

F THE 2019 EDITION OF THE SAUTI ZA BUSARA MUSIC FESTIVAL ENDED ON SUNDAY NIGHT WITH A THRILLING PERFORMANCE BY MOKOOMBA FROM ZIMBABWE, AND HAS BEEN LABELED BY STAKEHOLDERS AS ONE OF THE BEST FESTIVALS THAT THE ORGANIZERS HAVE STAGED SINCE 2004”

rom the rich and fresh line-up to various activities such as the Swahili Encounters artistic collaborations and Movers & Shakers networking sessions for professionals, the festival further galvanized its position as one of Africa’s best music festivals that puts African music under the international spotlight. The festival which was themed ‘Say No to Corruption’ is a true platform where both superstars and up and coming musicians can connect and build bridges. Yusuf Mahmoud, the festival director said it was with great pride that they had hosted another extravaganza of this nature, even at times when the odds seemed stacked against them. Despite the financial shortcomings, they were once again able to deliver a world class festival whose standards easily compare with others elsewhere, that are heavily funded by national associations. “One of the major strengths has been to help artists connect with each other and to build cultural bridges that would be difficult to create through ordinary means. The festival clearly brings benefits for Zanzibar and Tanzania in terms of providing jobs and boosting the economy, building skills and livelihoods, promoting good-news stories, keeping traditions alive and providing spaces for intercultural exchange”, said Yusuf Mahmoud - the festival director. One of the artists who has benefited from Sauti Za Busara is Amina Omar, leader of Siti & the Band, whose career took a different turn from the very first day she performed at the festival for the first time. At the Movers & Shakers forum, Amina recounted how she has travelled several countries through connections she made at the festival in past years. She addressed to have been invited to several countries such as Nigeria, Uganda and others, not only for performances but also in collaborations with other African artists. MARCH 2019 Dar Life I 41

The festival this year paid tribute to some of the departed African stars who left their mark on the world music industry. As the event celebrated the life-giving properties of African music, it also acknowledged the enormous contribution made by musicians who departed this world during the past 12 months, where as legends such as Ayub Ogada, Geoffrey Oryema, 42 I Dar Life I MARCH 2019

Rachid Taha, Aretha Franklin, Randy Weston, Jackson Aluta Kazimoto, Kassemady Diabate, Khaira Arby, Hugh Masekela, Oliver Mtukudzi , were celebrated, as their music will forever live on. (South Africa), Ithrene and Ifrikya Spirit (Algeria), Asia Madani (Sudan/Egypt), Lydol (Cameroun), Sofaz and Dago Roots (Reunion) and more. BENEFITS OF SEX FOR THE HEALTH OF YOUR HEART Why You Should Have More Sex For Heart Health By Chris Iliades

S

ex and heart health go hand in hand. Sex is generally safe for heart patients as long as they get the OK from their doctors, according to a statement from the American Heart Association (AHA). In fact, research has actually shown that sex can be good for your ticker. WE GIVE YOU A LIST OF BENEFITS OF SEX FOR YOUR HEART HEALTH: SEX IS GOOD EXERCISE The most obvious way sex benefits your heart is the fact that it’s a bit of a workout. “Sex is good aerobic exercise, and aerobic exercise is good for heart health aerobic activity is one that uses the big muscles of the body in rhythmic, continuous

fashion, so doing the deed definitely counts. Benefits of aerobic exercise range from weight loss to reduced risk of heart attack and diabetes. LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE Sex is generally good for lowering blood pressure, and itself may deepen the effect in women. Orgasm in women stimulates the release of the hormone oxytocin, which has a direct effect on lowering blood pressure, which is good exercise for your heart. STRESS REDUCTION There are many reasons why people have sex, including relaxation. Chilling out is good for your heart because stress hormones constrict your blood vessels and speed up your heart rate, increasing your risk for heart attack.

MOTIONAL HEALTH Regular sex as part of a supportive emotional relationship is especially good for your heart. Studies show that emotional issues like stress, anger, anxiety, and loneliness contribute to heart attack risk much like smoking and high cholesterol do. The health benefits of sex may be particularly important for seniors. As men and women age, sex becomes less about performance and more about intimacy. There’s no reason seniors should stop enjoying the many benefits of an active sex life, including increased circulation, reduced anxiety, and a greater sense of well-being.

WHEN IT COMES TO SEX AND YOUR HEART, THE BENEFITS GO BOTH WAYS. IF YOU HAVE A HEALTHY HEART, YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO HAVE FREQUENT SEX, AND A HEALTHY SEX LIFE MAY ALSO DECREASE YOUR HEART ATTACK RISK FACTORS.

“HAVING BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY FOR TWELVE YEARS NOW, ALLY HAS ALREADY MADE SOME OF THE BIGGEST CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FASHION INDUSTRY IN THE COUNTRY. HIS CLOTHES ARE LIVING PROOF OF JUST WHAT ALLY IS CAPABLE OF CREATING: CLASSIC YET EDGY, ECCENTRIC YET FEMININE, TRENDY YET INNOVATIVE, DARING YET ALLURING.” On the night of February 9th, Ally Rehmtullah amused fashion enthusiasts with a major fashion show event that showcased his amazing designs, that were mixed with different fabrics and colors. The event was named “Strings Attached”, and I must say that we fashion lovers are still left in awe with the wonderful talent that Ally keeps proving to have, year after year.

Another thing that really caught our eye was the wonderful décor. The entire venue was transformed into something magical. From the lights, to the flowers and the all white scenery, the whole area felt like walking straight in heaven. Accompanied by music played by The Muse and the angelic models walking on the runway, we are sure to tell you that this event was well planned, and we loved every bit and second of it. 600 invites guests at the Serena Hotel were welcomed with cocktail drinks, followed by a showcase of fashion and music tangled together that they wished would never end. The evening ended up with an after-party at Elements. 48 I Dar Life I MARCH 2019

The event was highly unique as the audience were seen singing and dancing to South Africa’s electric strings quartet – The Muse. The girl band touched the very core of our hearts while playing popular songs that almost all of the audience could be heard singing. They performed famous songs such as Havanna and Rolling to the deep. The crowd was amazed by their stunning talents.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH:

Washington Steven Masanja “... we are all creators... we are all artists in a way....” By Detricia Pamba Name: Washington Steven Masanja Profession: Pyrography Artist Born: 11th , October, 1992

FROM TINGATINGA ARTISTS TO MORE CONTEMPORARY PAINTERS, SCULPTORS, PHOTOGRAPHERS AND FILMMAKERS, TANZANIA DOESN’T LACK IN ARTISTIC SKILLS AND VARIETY. WHILE SOME ARTISTS HAVE MANAGED TO ESTABLISH THEMSELVES, MANY MORE HUSTLE ON A DAILY BASIS TO BE RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR UNIQUE TALENT. DAR LIFE CAUGHT UP WITH THE NEWLY EMERGING ARTIST WASHINGTON MASANJA, WHO SHARED WITH US A BIT ABOUT HIS HISTORY, WHAT INSPIRES HIM, AND HOW HE ENVISIONS THE FUTURE OF ART IN TANZANIA. 52 I Dar Life I MARCH 2019

AT AN EARLY AGE WASHINGTON’S INTEREST AND AFFINITY TOWARDS ART WAS IDENTIFIED AT DOGODOGO AND SO SOME GOOD SAMARITANS SPONSORED HIS ADVANCED TRAINING IN ART, BY SENDING HIM AFTER COMPLETION OF HIGH SCHOOL TO SOUTH AFRICA. HE WAS ADMITTED AT THE DEPARTMENT OF ART AND DESIGN IN CAPE TOWN AND THE RUTH PROWSE SCHOOL OF ART FOR A METRIC (GRADUATE). SEEING HIS KEENNESS IN ART, HE WAS FURTHER SPONSORED TO GO TO ROME, ITALY FOR A BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN ARTS. HE GOT HIS DEGREE FROM ROME UNIVERSITY IN 2014.”

W

ashington Steven Masanja was born on 11th, October, 1992, in the small mountain village of Salunda, Bariadi in Simiyu region. Washington had a very difficult childhood as he was sent to an orphanage after his father passed away in 1996, while Washington was still a child. His mother who was a farmer by profession, already had four other children and could not bring up Washington, hence she decided to put him in an

Orphanage Centre, in Mwanza (kuleana). By that time there was no formal school at the Orphanage, so they took him to another Orphanage Centre in Dar Es Salaam (Dogodogo Centre) where he received his early foundation in art and Primary School. Dogodogo Centre offered him and other children a chance for training at TCC CLUB, whereby his teacher Evarist Fabian Chikawe was a trainer and supported by the founder of Nyumba ya Sanaa (House of Culture), Sister Jean Pruitt. Thereafter, He returned to Tanzania and started working for IT at Inter Zepha (T) LTD and RAN IT East Africa LTD, (MWANZA). Seeing the limitation of his scope of development in his field, Washington came to Dar es Salaam and joined Karibu Art Gallery. He spent most of his time developing his artistic skills in many different types of media including Oil paints, acrylic, watercolor, graphite, ink and more, before becoming a selfdeveloped Pyrography Artist. Using a hot metal tool and a steady hand, he burns realistic images onto unfinished pieces of wood, leather and camel skin. His artwork reflects his appreciation of the wildlife, landscape or portrait of celebrities. DL: What inspires you to paint? WM: I am influenced and inspired by the magnificence and splendor of the natural environment. I seek to stimulate my viewers emotions through the passion I feel when I am immersed in nature; whether by the beauty of a single flower in a still life or by a panoramic wild coastline scene. I am intrigued by the fleeting balance between strength and fragility in nature and I seek to create feelings of tranquility and balance in my drawings. MARCH 2019 Dar Life I 53

DL: How long have you been an artist? WM: I have been doing art since I was in elementary school. Art was always my favorite class, hence I grew up through that. DL: What mediums do you like to use? WM: Am using plywood, camel skin, ebony and soldering iron to do my sketches on wood by burning it. DL: Tell us about your first exhibition. When was it? WM: My first exhibition was in 2016 where I participated in Tanzania Visual Arts Competition ”Don Quixote A Spanish Myth through Tanzanian Eyes” in which I won the runner-up award. It was a wake up call for me to do more, and exciting as well. DL: What is the role of an artist in the society? WM: I believe that it is an artist ‘s responsibility to give back to his or her 54 I Dar Life I MARCH 2019

community by providing workshops or even donating works to nonprofit organizations. It’s important to stay connected with other artists and positively impact our communities while educating and making the public aware of our art and causes we support. DL: What technique do you use? Which is more important to you, the subject of your painting, or the way it is executed? WM: I started by getting my hands on anything and everything that made sense to either burn or assist in burning and began expanding my repertoire and results. Pyrography has been described as the art of drawing with fire. For years I merely employed a sophisticated wood burning tool with varied tips for desired with what a little heat could do. The last several years I found my work a bit boring, as once you have conquered a particular technique and

style, your strong desire is to move past that. So,I began experimenting with other tools and techniques, ones that a “Pyrography “might not otherwise consider, but also the subject of my painting plays a huge role too. DL: What do you think makes your art stand out? WM: Creativity of the great art will always stand out above the ordinary, everything is relative, compare art you may like with art throughout history you know or feel is great, and in comparison, you will quickly see how merely pretty your art is. My creativity makes my stand out. To purchase any of Masanja’s paintings and to inquire about his exhibitions, please contact: Washington Masanja on +255 716 352 191 or email: masanjaart@ gmail.com

5. A TRANSITION TO A NEW CAREER PATH Flexibility and greater autonomy are two of the main factors that drive career decisions for today’s modern job seeker. Many people decide to make contract work a permanent career choice as they crave control over their work schedule, find enjoyment in the freedom of exploring different work environments and projects, and like engaging with multiple employers.

HERE ARE FIVE HARD-TOIGNORE ADVANTAGES OF WORKING A TEMPORARY JOB: 1. A CHANCE TO DIVERSIFY YOUR EXPERIENCE Navigating the workplace as a temp employee allows you to experience different types of positions in a short time period. For recent grads, you can trial different work environments – from a large, brand-name corporation to a 30-employee firm. 2. AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR Employers use temporary and contract workers for a number of reasons. Oftentimes, companies will allocate a completely separate budget toward contract positions. These funds can be used

4. A MEANS FOR LIGHTING A FIRE UNDER YOUR BUM Many of us have fallen victim to the unemployment slump. It happens to the best of us. Mustering up the drive to use your time productively can be difficult when you’ve become accustomed to a slower routine. However, you can reintroduce yourself to office life and shift your mentality to one that focuses on meaningful, proactive activities. Taking on temporary work in this scenario is a great way to get your productivity level back up while also reigniting your inspiration to start chasing those career goals again.

FIRST TRIMESTER SCREENING ULTRASOUND – THE 11- 14 WEEKS SCAN Intelligence & Care by Hi Tech Sai Healthcare Centre By Dr. Aqeela Mustafa, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist / Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist fetus, or a genetic disorder. Every woman has an age dependant background risk of having a chromosomally abnormal fetus, and the NT measurement can change this risk. An increased NT is not only a marker for chromosomal defect, it may be associated with fetal death. Fetuses with NT measurements higher than 3.5 mm have a significantly increased risk of major congenital heart disorders, and this identifies a subgroup of high-risk patients in whom

A

n early ultrasound assessment at 11-14 weeks gestation not only determines the possibility of a live pregnancy, it is also the ideal time to accurately date the pregnancy, ensure the pregnancy is in the correct location within the uterus, assesses the number of fetuses and type of multiple pregnancy, and detect any major fetal abnormalities. The nuchal translucency (NT) which is the fluid behind the fetal neck is measured at this time to determine the risk of the fetus having a chromosomal, cardiac, other structural abnormality in the

60 I Dar Life I MARCH 2019

detailed ultrasound study of the fetal heart should be carried out. Although measurement of the NT is an important aspect of the 11–14 week scan, examination of the fetal anatomy is possible during this period to detect any major fetal structural abnormalities, such as anencephaly (absence of skull bone), holoprosencephaly (loss of midline brain structures), omphalocoele (herniation of the umbilical cord), etc. This early anatomical survey is not a replacement for the routine

ultrasound in the second trimester, but can be used as an adjunct to the early detection of fetal structural defects. The management and outcome of multiple pregnancies not only depends on the number of fetuses, but also the type of pregnancy i.e. the chorionicity. One third of the twin pregnancies are monochorionics, that is twins that share one placenta, and monochorionic twin pregnancies have more complications than dichorionic pregnancy (twins that have their own separate placentas). Chorionicity is determined with 100% accuracy in the first trimester hence sonographers should be encouraged to determine and report chorionicity. The 11-14 weeks assessment is arguably becoming the base of antenatal care scheduling, and predicts not just the outcome of the pregnancy. An early booking and first trimester ultrasound assessment should hence be emphasized and focused on, in attempt to further improve the standard of care provided to pregnant women. For more information on a First Trimester Screening Ultrasound, visit Hi Tech Sai Healthcare Centre or call us at +255 684 807 159 or +255 754 787 869

PREGNANCY IS AN IMPORTANT TIME IN A WOMAN’S LIFE AND THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY PRENATAL CARE IS OFTEN UNDERESTIMATED. STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT 70% OF WOMEN WHOSE BABIES DIED DURING PREGNANCY OR IMMEDIATELY AFTER BIRTH, WERE NOT EVEN SEEN BY A DOCTOR BEFORE 20 WEEKS GESTATION. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT FIGURE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. NUMEROUS STUDIES DONE WORLDWIDE HAVE CLEARLY SHOWN THAT THE 11-14 WEEK ULTRASOUND SCAN IS THE MOST SENSITIVE MEANS OF CHECKING A FETUS FOR POSSIBLE ABNORMALITIES AND PREDICTING OTHER ADVERSE PREGNANCY OUTCOMES.”

UNSPOILED

ISLAND

An Island Of Incredible Natural Beauty And Culture

78 I Dar Life I MARCH 2019

I

f you’ve never heard of Pemba Island before in your, life, then you’ve now stumbled upon onto one of Tanzania’s most picturesque places, an Island of incredible natural beauty and culture. While Zanzibar may be the more popular or rather more advertised to tourists, it doesn’t mean you’ll have anything less than a ball of a time, equal to that of Zanzibar. Pemba Island has its own unique experience to offer travelers willing to make the trek from the mainland.

PEMBA IS A VERY BEAUTIFUL TROPICAL ISLAND, COVERING 988 SQUARE KILOMETERS AND LYING 40KM TO THE NORTH OF THE BETTER KNOWN ZANZIBAR ISLAND. IT IS A REMARKABLY UNTOUCHED PARADISE, RENOWNED FOR ITS VERDANT HILLY INTERIORS, REMOTE BEACHES AND OFFSHORE ISLANDS, AS WELL AS OFFERING SOME OF THE FINEST DIVING IN THE INDIAN OCEAN Where Zanzibar is a low lying coral atoll, Pemba is a true island. The landscape is generally hilly, extremely fertile and verdant. It is largely covered by agriculture of various types, especially palm and clove plantations, with significant open areas of cassava and rice. Pemba Island is a really sleepy backwater, which experiences only around 1% of the visitor traffic of nearby Zanzibar Island. It remains very much a rural economy, with the vast majority of the island’s 362,000 people being dependent on small-scale agriculture and fishing.

PEMBA’S TERRAIN IS HILLY AND LUSHLY VEGETATED, WHILE MUCH OF THE COAST IS LINED WITH MANGROVES AND LAGOONS, INTERSPERSED WITH IDYLLIC BEACHES AND ISLETS. OFFSHORE, CORAL REEFS OFFER SOME OF EAST AFRICA’S BEST DIVING.”

Historically the mainstay of the island’s economy has been the production of cloves and, although production is now very much in decline, during the main picking season every available surface seems to be laid with vast acres of sack cloth covered in aromatic cloves drying in the sun. Perhaps the most alluring aspect of the island is its stunning marine environment. Much of the coastline plunges steeply into the deep blue Indian Ocean, especially on the eastern side, whilst on the western side broad coral lagoons are dotted with a network of beautiful small islands. Mucking around in boats in these waters and having picnics on these remote tropical islands is such a great experience, this is almost certainly our favorite area of the East African coast.

MARCH 2019 Dar Life I 79

14 THINGS TO DO ON GO SNORKELING: Pemba is a well-known snorkeling

destination and the entire island is surrounded by coral reef. The Pemba channel attracts both seasoned and novice snorkelers and boasts a depth of more than 2,000 meters. You can go deep fishing and catch tuna, barracuda, shark and even whales.

GO KAYAKING: Apart from diving, there are other

exciting water sports you can engage in. Go kayaking on the breathtaking coastline and enjoy the azure waters as you paddle peacefully through the shoals of tropical fish and the occasional humpback whales. The Tanzanian coastline is also home to a large population of sharks and dolphins.

DINE OUT: A trip to Pemba would be incomplete if you missed out on its rich culinary offerings. The main streets of Chake Chake, Pemba’s capital, are littered with cafes boasting feasts for both the palate and the eye. Wander through Chake Chake’s alleyways and get immersed in the flavors of spiced-rice, clove-flavored tamarind paste, and ginger. If you love fish then Tumbe fish market in the north of the island is a must visit. Pemba is renowned for its seafood and the Pemba channel is a great deep-sea fishing site. BIRDLIFE: Pemba Island is famous for its wildlife.

It boasts some 180-bird species both migratory and indigenous; if you’re a keen bird watcher then check out the Scope owl and the black crow. The birds can be spotted from dusk when they leave their nests on the clove plantations to hunt for food.

VISIT MISALI ISLAND: Surrounded by crystal waters and stunning coral reefs, Misali offers some of the best diving in East Africa, while snorkeling is spectacular and easily reached from the beach. Around the island, nesting turtles favour beaches on the western side, while on the northeast coast is Baobab Beach, with fine sand and a small ranger centre (although information here is limited). NGEZI FOREST RESERVE: In far northeastern

Pemba, dense and wonderfully lush Ngezi is one of the last remaining areas of indigenous forest that once covered much of the island, and as close to rainforest that you’ll get anywhere on Zanzibar. Protected by a 1476-hectare reserve, the forest is a true double canopy, complete with vines providing swings for raucous vervet monkeys. The entrance gate and visitor centre is 5km west of Konde, on the main dirt road to the Kigomasha Peninsula.

KIDIKE FLYING FOX SANCTUARY: Kidike can be found near the village of Kangagani about 2km east of the new primary road between Chake Chake and Wete. The Kidike Sanctuary plays home to a range of wildlife with the highlight being a spectacular colony of Pemba flying foxes, a large bat indigenous to Pemba (called popo in Swahili). 80 I Dar Life I MARCH 2019

O ON PEMBA ISLAND MKAME NDUME RUINS: The ruined palace of

Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman, who ruled Pemba prior to the arrival of the Portuguese (late 15th to early 16th centuries), is an evocative spot. Rahman had a reputation for cruelty and was known as Mkame Ndume (Milker of Men). Today the ruins’ primary feature is a large stone staircase that led from the kilometre-long channel (now dry) connecting this site to the ocean.

VISIT TO THE ZSTC CLOVE OIL DISTILLERY:

Pemba is well known for growing cloves and its own distillery is where the cloves are crushed to produce clove oil. It is run by the Zanzibar Trading Corporation. It’s located at Machomane about one kilometer from the town center and can be reached using a Dala Dala (local taxis).

RAS MKUMBUU RUINS: Ras Mkumbuu is the

headland at the end of the thin strip of land jutting into the sea northwest of Chake Chake. It’s also the name given to the ruins of an ancient settlement, once called Qanbalu, dating from the 8th century, which by the early 10th century had become one of the major cities along the East African coast. The main ruins, consisting of a large mosque, some tombs and houses, date from around the 14th century, and several walls are still standing.

RAS KIGOMASHA LIGHTHOUSE: Located on

the headland Ras at the far northern tip of the Kigomasha Peninsula, this lighthouse was built by the British in 1900 and is still actively maintained by its keeper. Get a bit of a sweat going by scaling the staircase for wonderful views of the sea and back across the island.

VISIT CHWAKA RUINS: Chwaka ruins are located about 3km south of Tumbe and consist of two separate sites. The Haruni site and the Mazrui Tombs which go as far back as the 17th century. These two form the original Pemba town that existed between 11th and 15th centuries. They are very popular with historians and once you’ve seen enough you can take a walk and watch the beautiful bay area. SPICE FARM & RAIN FORREST TOUR : Ngezi forest, which is located in the northerly parts of the island is a protected zone and remains one of the last indigenous areas of the forest. The forest is habitat for the rare colobus monkey and the flying fox. You can spot the two in the early morning or late afternoon when it has cooled down. If you look closely, you will notice the colobus monkeys missing thumbs. THE HISTORY OF THE ISLAND AT THE PEMBA MUSEUM: Take a few hours to explore the

history of Pemba Island by hitting up the Pemba museum. This small museum has well-organised and displays on island history. The museum fills up a 18th-century Omani fort, which was could have been built on the remains a 16th-century Portuguese garrison.

WHERE TO STAY

Pemba’s secluded nature makes it an obvious destination for the luxury traveler, and there are a handful of exquisite lodges to choose from. These include Constance Aiyana, whose 30 minimalist villas invite the adjacent ocean into your private living space. The resort also has its own terrace restaurant, infinity pool and spa. Others Fundu Lagoon , the Underwater Room at Manta Resort .

HOW TO GET THERE

The easiest way to get to Pemba is to fly in with a private aviation company like Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, Safari Airlink , flightlink which offer daily scheduled flights to Pemba Airport (PMA) near Chake Chake. You can fly

to Pemba from Arusha, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, with the latter journey taking just 30 minutes. It is possible to travel between Zanzibar and Pemba on a ferry. The most reliable ferries are those operated by Azam Marine. If you decide to explore on your own once you’re there, use local minibuses or dala dalas to get around.

WHEN TO GO

Mafia truly is a diver’s dream, and the marine park offers everything from challenging dive walls to sheltered bays that novices can float around in. Get your timings right and there’s some serious bucket-list worthy marine experiences on offer too. From October to March, that’s snorkeling and scuba diving with whale sharks, and from June to September, you might spot turtle hatching on the beach. The island has so much to offer that it takes an entire week to absorb it all. This is truly a gem in the Indian Ocean and whether you’re a fan of water sports, wildlife or Swahili cuisine, Pemba has something for everyone. Grab the chance and visit this magical island and you’re guaranteed to experience an unforgettable holiday.
