Mathenge, who was selected based on his work ‘Images of Terror’, which appeared in the Kenyan daily print newspaper The Standard, became the first ever photographer to win the honorable prize. The work documents the moments of terror experienced by Westgate Mall shoppers in Kenya, when the mall was attacked by unidentified gunmen in September 2013.
Mathenge said: “It’s a great honor, and I’m humbled to receive this award. All finalists who are here deserve this award. I hope it will motivate men, women and children of good will all over the world to fight terrorism. Memories fade with time, but pictures don’t. He also urged Tanzanian journalists to use the awards as a lesson to do their work more professionally and with excellence. Chairperson of the judging panel, Ferial Haffajee, said: “Joseph Mathenge’s photographs so eloquently captured one of Africa’s toughest 21st Century moments that they were worth a thousand words. That said, the quality of all the winners’ works made the contest a tightly run one.”

CAB Music Concert in Dar es Salaam Connection Across Continents By Abel Shuma
D
ar es Salaam residents and visitors were treated to a special music performance by the trio CAB – Carribean, Africa, & Brazil – on October 2nd at Alliance Francais. CAB is the encounter of three musicians and a true sharing of three universes. The group aims to overcome the barriers of languages, cultures and traditions to create unique music, reflecting today’s interconnected world. “As their name suggests, CAB performs a range of Caribbean, African and Brazilian music. The trio is composed of Martinican pianist Mario
Canonge, Cameroonian singer and guitarist Blick Bassy, and the talented young Brazilian percussionist Adriano Tenoriodd.” The trio’s name also plays on the word ‘cab’ as it is commonly used in New-York or London to refer to a taxi, which is of course the car people share to go from a point to another, and is therefore a symbol of exchange and travel. Relays of sounds and emotions, blenders of styles and moods, alchemies of colors… these three taxi drivers propose you to share the fare!

Global March For Elephants & Rhinos
Tanzania offers unlimited amnesty for poachers By Adam Ihucha, ETN Tanzania
26 I Dar Life I November 2014
The 7-kilometer march was timed to coincide with Nyerere Memorial Day. The “Father of the Nation” and first president Mwalimu Julius Nyerere died in a London hospital on October 14th, 1999. The late Nyerere was the man behind the support to the conservation drive that
“Poaching is killing more than 35,000 elephants every year -- one elephant killed every 15 minutes, and more than 1,000 rhinos every year -- one rhino killed every 10 hours.” saw around 200,000 sq. km, or nearly a quarter of the country’s land surface, reserved for wildlife conservation. Way back in 1961, Nyerere issued the Arusha Manifesto, which articulated the country’s determination to conserve the wildlife for the future livelihood and wellbeing. With the goal of creating a
chance for these species to recover from decades of mass slaughter, Tanzania is now offering poachers unlimited amnesty, saying they will be forgiven if they surrender, but will face the “full might” of state wrath if they do not. “The state would pardon poachers who would willingly surrender to the authorities,” announced the Natural Resources and Tourism Minister, Lazaro Nyalandu at the climax of the Elephant and Rhino March in Arusha. Minister Nyalandu also used the march to encourage women to implore their spouses involved in poaching to surrender: “Common sense dictates that women are November 2014 I Dar Life I 27

n October 4th, 2014, residents of Arusha marched in solidarity with those around the world protesting poaching of elephants and rhinos. The goal of the march was to spread awareness that the only hope for survival for these endangered animals lies in an immediate end to the “legal” and “illegal” ivory and rhino horn trade.
powerful when it comes to dealing with their spouses. Talk to them to surrender before it’s too late for the sake of the family,” he stressed. Furthermore, the cabinet minister made a passionate call to the international community to ban trade on ivory and rhino products in order to stop the heightening poaching of the threatened wildlife. He also urged the Asian population to stop purchasing products with elephant tusks and rhino horns. Unlike ivory, which is a raw material for making covers for handlers of daggers and other items, rhino horns are in high demand mainly in the Asian market, as the material is believed to be an effective sex energizer. Tour operators and conservationists are warning that the African elephant and rhinos are doomed to extinction, if states and other stakeholders do not act. Chairman of Tanzania Tour 28 I Dar Life I November 2014
Operators Association (TATO), Mr. Willy Chambulo, explained that the wildlife-rich country will have no elephants left by 2020 or sooner, given current rates of loss. As for rhinos, Mr. Chambulo warned that “We may have as few as 100 black rhino left in Tanzania and all of them are protected at excessive expense. Their future is precarious.” According to the Chairman, Tanzania has been losing an estimated 9-10,000 elephants per annum. It is estimated that nearly 70,000 elephants remaining is down from approximately 106,000 in 2009 and 200,000 in 1970. Though the extent of poaching, particularly in the South and West of the country, appears to have slowed down, more census work is expected in these areas to compare with the census taken at the same time last year. “Globally wildlife campaigners say an
estimated 35,000 elephants and 1,000 rhinos are killed each year as demand for ivory and rhino horn drives increasing poaching rates. This demand means both species could potentially be wiped out within the next 20 years.” Communities living in and around wildlife-protected areas could fight poaching effectively, if they are meaningfully benefiting from the resources. TATO chief said that the government has no option other than to involve the communities around these areas if the war against poaching is to be won: “The communities in and around the wildlife protected areas feel that the animals are state properties and that they have no direct link with their lives,” Chambullo stressed.

Feedback on the festival indicates that the community views the event as a potentially very powerful economic stimulant in the region, despite the challenges it may be facing as a young and relatively unknown festival.
This year’s edition also featured a heavier emphasis on live music, compared to the previous two editions, which primarily highlighted hip hop culture.
with an impeccable quality was one of the most highly praised achievements of this year’s event. A fashion show is an important part of the annual festival. Jambo Fashion Affair 2014 showcased seven designers from Dar, Morogoro and Arusha: Martin Kadinda, Salim Ali, Naunuhu, Diana Magesa, Veronica Lugenzi, Neema Meena and Zakia Ally. The Fashion Affair has steadily grown to become one of the top events in the fashion industry, creating a wider platform for all industry stakeholders.

While focusing on showcasing the potential of Tanzania’s fine arts and culture, the Jambo Festival is also stimulating the growth of the local economy.
The next edition of Jambo Festival is scheduled for September 4th – 5th 2015 in Arusha. As the festival’s tag line goes “We Can’t Wait!”
Afro-fusion, Jazz, Hip Hop, Soul, and Reggae were among the genres performed during the 3-day event. Several of the artists who commented on the festival said it not only gives them a platform to show off their work, but also creates new opportunities and networks as it brings together a large number of artists from different parts of the world.
“We are happy that the Jambo Festival, which started three years ago, is growing by leaps and bounds as the number of participants and sponsors are increasing remarkably with each year,” stated Augustino Namfua, whose brainwave resulted in the creation of the festival.”

Serena Hotel Hosts Passionate Flamenco Performance A Unique Spanish Cultural Experience in Dar es Salaam By Rosé Ángel del Barrio
n October 9th and 10th Serena Hotel in Dar es Salaam hosted a cocktail evening and flamenco dance performance in partnership with the Embassy of Spain and Turkish Airlines. The well-known style of dance and music was performed by three artists from Spain: Ainhoa Linaza, as bailaora (dancer), Belén Vega, as cantaora (singer) and Juan Ballesteros, as tocaor or guitarrista (guitar player). The passionate music coupled with impecable dance moves made this an unforgettable performance. The audience at Serena Hotel was truly mesmerized by the talent of the bailaora Ainhoa Linaza in her different dances sevillanas, alegrías, soleás, fandangos – vocally expressing their appreciation for the agile movements of her body combined with the strength of her zapateado, that is, the beating of her feet against the floor in perfect harmony with the rhythm of the music. Of course every good flamenco 40 I Dar Life I November 2014
dancer needs an reliable cantaora, and Belén Vega did not disappoint. She expertly sang the lyrics of the songs, transmitting tangible joy, doubt, pain and love through her powerful voice. And completing the creation of this enchanting atmosphere was the music of the highly qualified guitarrist Juan Ballesteros. His agile fingers masterfully played florituras, rasgueos and trémolos throughout the evening. Several studies have explored the physical and mental health benefits of engaging in flamenco dance, resulting in a recent upsurge of Spanish universities offering workshops on what they call Flamencotherapy. Even those who can’t dance can experience some of the positive effects just from watching a stimulating flamenco performance. Whether you missed it this time or attended and loved it, be sure to keep an eye out for the next flamenco performance in Tanzania!

The Swahili International Tourism Expo Promoting Tanzania as a Leisure & Adventure Travel Destination By John Kinyanga “The Swahili International Tourism Expo (S!TE) was held in Tanzania’s commercial capital of Dar es Salaam from October 1st to 4th and was officially launched by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete on the second day of the event, October 2nd, 2014.”
42 I Dar Life I November 2014
A
s the first-ever international tourism exhibition held in Tanzania, S!TE attracted 175 exhibitors who gathered at the stateof-art Mlimani City Conference Hall to exhibit and showcase the services they offer to their clients. “The S!TE event incorporated a Hosted Buyer and Travel Writer programme - a unique and effective programme intended to make it easy for top quality buyers to attend the show, while maximizing the sales for exhibitors. Twenty international buyers (tour operators, packagers and travel agents, and wholesalers) and four international travel media professionals from USA, Australia, Ireland, Spain, India, South Africa, China, the UK and Germany fully participated in the four-day expo.
Various visitors from Tanzania, Uganda, Seychelles, United States, United Kingdom, India, Russia, South Africa, Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda, and Germany attended the S!TE event. Among them were prominent media professionals, diplomats and travel trade executives. The S!TE exhibition registered record levels of attendance. Over 1000 business executives also participated in various seminars and presentations targeting tourism investment and business, which were hosted by the diplomats from India and Russia.

In an effort to create awareness and increase destination knowledge for hosted buyers and travel media professionals, the invited S!TE participants did a pre-tour to Zanzibar and a post-tour to Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park.
“The President assured the S!TE participants and partners of his government’s full support and commitment to improving the tourism industry in Tanzania, and expressed his commitment to sustain policies as well as legal and fiscal regimes that would facilitate and promote growth of the tourism sector in Tanzania.” During the opening ceremony and launching of the first-ever S!TE exhibition, President Jakaya Kikwete said said that he was optimistic that the annual Swahili Expo will go a long way towards promoting Tanzania as a destination of choice for global tourists by 2030. President Kikwete expressed concerns, however, that the African continent lags behind in both attracting international tourists and in revenue earnings, despite having many attractive hot spots for both leisure and adventure visitors. In 2013, he noted, Africa received about 56 million international tourists, which accounted for only 5 percent of the world tourism market share. In terms of international tourism receipt, Africa received only 34 billion US dollars which is equivalent to 3 per cent of total income from tourism. He thus urged African countries to continue make efforts to promote growth of the continent’s tourism sector. The Swahili International Tourism Expo (S!TE) was organized by the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) and the South African-based Pure Grit Project and Exhibition Management Ltd.

Gold Moto 360 Smartwatch
$299
It looks like there is a Gold Moto 360 smartwatch on the way, as Amazon briefly listed the device on their website as the Moto 360 Champagne Metal. Considering the price that was listed for the Gold Moto 360 smartwatch and also the ‘champagne metal’ description, it looks like the device will come with a gold color metal, rather than actual gold or gold plating, as it would cost a bit more. The Moto 360 comes with a 1.56 inch display with a resolution of 320 x 290 pixels. The device is powered by a TI OMAP 3 processor and comes with 4GB of storage and 512MB of RAM.

The world’s first handheld consumer camcorder that shoots in 4K, the current top-of-the-line standard in televisions. CAREER
The Importance of Clarity in Your Career Powering Through the Land of Soulless Work By Long Yun Siang
1. Get Clarity About the Task at Hand Let’s start to be clear with the simplest of all. Have clarity of the task at hand. What is it you need to do? Some people like to make assumptions on the things they need to be done. They fail to ask and clarify thinking they know it all. 2. Clarify Your Own Goals Do you know what you want? This applies to both your work and your personal life. Some people like to blame their work for their unhappiness, not knowing the source of displeasure is from their personal life. 3. Evaluate the Challenges What are some of the challenges you are facing now at work? Is it a lack of skills or particular knowledge? Is it issues with colleagues? Be clear on these challenges. How are you going to tackle them and what is your plan of action? The 56 I Dar Life I November 2014
reason you are seeing a lot of soulless workers is because these people talk, whine and complain without being clear on what needs to be done and acting accordingly. 4. Establish Mindfulness Clarity of mind is very important. You need to be able to distinguish things that you cannot change. What are the things you can do practically and how you can do them? There is no point trying to solve a problem that cannot be solved. Knowing whether a problem can be solved or not takes experience. How does experience come? By doing it, going through it, and failing at times. Learning always has a price, but it has even higher rewards. 6. Use Clear Speech Whether you are taking instructions, requesting for something or giving instructions, learn to be clear in your communications at work. It is an important skill that will take you very far. 7. Act with Integrity Act in accordance with your highest values - avoid politics, back-stabbing, and gossip at all costs. You will make more friends and less enemies, you will be able to influence others more positively, and you will rest knowing your conscience is clean and you did the best you could in every situation.
Picture Courtesy of Long Yun Siang
Look around you - are you like many of the people in the working world trudging through the land of soulless workers? People who dread going to work everyday, fear seeing their boss and feel tense meeting their clients? How do you then power yourself through the land of zombie workers? Be clear when you are at work if you are looking to differentiate yourself from the others.

The Well-known Bollywood
DJ Goddess Up Close & Personal with International Female DJ
NAME: Jessica Dhillon AGE: Blah! haha BIRTHDAY: March 16th, Piscean HEIGHT: 5’7” OCCUPATION: DJ/Film Producer/Dance Choreographer HOMETOWN: Prince Rupert COUNTRY: Canada
DJ Goddess (Jessica Dhillon) began DJ’ing less than three years ago and has already become an international sensation spinning in such cities as London, Dubai, Mumbai, and New York at some of the top clubs. She has picked up many accolades already including being labeled as one of the “Top Three New DJ’s” to look out for and “No. 1 New DJ in Canada” in 2013. She’s also topped the Reverbnation charts several times. She has been labeled a quadruple threat several times – in addition to being a talented spinner, she is also an executive film producer (Hollywood/India), dance choreographer, and fitness blogger. Determined to fight back against the stereotype of females as less 60 I Dar Life I November 2014
competent than males in the DJ arena, DJ Goddess spends a lot of time perfecting her craft and takes her mixing very seriously. Her favorite genres to spin are EDM/House and Electro-Bollywood. She has been seen spinning full hard house sets in Kolkata, Electro-Bollywood and EDM/ house sets at her favourite club Tryst Mumbai, and ElectroBollywood and commercial remix sets in Dubai. Though her name might suggest otherwise, DJ Goddess remains down-to-earth. She is a small-town born and bred girl with a nerdy and studious background, having graduated at the top of her class at one of the top tier universities in her country. DJ Goddess, as she explains, is almost an alter ego to her nerdy, “tomboy” self. Her love for the entertainment
and music industry has definitely allowed her to blossom into the entrepreneur she is today. Dar Life: Walk through a day in the life of Jessica Dhillon. Goddess: Because I’m involved with so many different ventures, my days are never the same. I also spend almost 60% of my year on the road. When I’m at home, I do love to get my early morning workouts in with Kenny from Beat Body Training. I feel that getting through workouts allows you to get through life! I then typically do my work emails and conference calls (musicrelated and film-related) and then work on my music. I love to end my days with family when I’m at home. I’m super family-oriented, so when I’m on the road I miss them tons and try to make up for it when I’m
in Vancouver. DL: What is your family background like? Goddess: I come from a very middle class family. My father immigrated to Canada in his twenties with only five dollars in his pocket and I’m so incredibly proud of everything he has built since. He ensured we had everything we needed growing up. In fact consider myself spoiled at times – even if we didn’t have the grandest of houses and copious amounts of money, my parents provided me with everything so that I never felt I lacked anything. DL: How did you manage to get into DJ-ing? Goddess: I actually was working for former George Lucas physical effects studio (Avatar, Airbender, Transformers, etc.) and I would get some down November 2014 I Dar Life I 61
and when I come out with new mixes. That motivates me to keep working at it.
spinning for the people of Dar and am so excited to come back again.
DL: Where are some of the places that you have travelled and DJ-ed? Goddess: I have been super blessed in travelling so much in the last two and half years of DJ’ing. I’ve DJ’d in Dubai, Mumbai, San Francisco, New York, London, Africa, and Qatar, amongst many other places.
DL: What type of music do you play? Goddess: As a DJ, I feel that it is important to be versatile and spin a range of music. My favorite genres to spin are Electro-Bollywood and EDM/ House.
DL: What do you like about DJ-ing? Goddess: It’s the best feeling in the world to be able to play music and make mixtapes that people can vibe too. Music is definitely something everyone can relate too. It’s an incredible feeling to get people on their feet at a club or to motivate people in the gym with my workout mixes. DL: How has it been for you so far to DJ in Tanzania here at Rhapsody’s? Goddess: It was such an incredible experience. I was received with so much love in Dar and didn’t realize that there was such a big fan base for Bollywood and Bhangra music. I had an amazing time 62 I Dar Life I November 2014
DL: What are some of the things that we would be surprised to know about you? Goddess: I ride a motorbike and am a complete nerd and tomboy. DL: What was the first record you bought? Goddess: My first memory of buying a tape (gosh I must be old), was AC DC. My dad owned a ton of records as well from Tina Turner to Whitney Houston. Unfortunately they were left behind when we moved from Prince Rupert to Vancouver, but I totally wish we had those records. DL: How do you keep yourself motivated to go on and keep improving? Goddess: I love the reactions of people when I throw on tracks
DL: What do you do to motivate the crowd if nobody is dancing? Goddess: Reading the crowd is so important! It’s so crucial to figure out what music most people would vibe too. If they’re not feeling the music, it’s completely necessary to switch it up. This is the reason why I always prefer to go into a gig without pre-planning my set. I love winging it because it’s more real and authentic. DL: How do you keep your music collection up-to-date? Goddess: I love websites like djcity.com and beatport to keep updated on most of my music. As for Bollywood music, I have a lot of amazing DJ’s I follow on soundcloud who keep me updated with the latest music. It was great fun interviewing her. Dar Life would like to wish DJ Goddess all the best for the coming shows and events. Find out more about DJ Goddess at www.djgoddess. com

time between film contracts. I decided to pick up music on the side and fell in love.
DL: How big is your vinyl collection? What do you think of CDJ’s? Goddess: Although I learned on vinyls, I switched over to CDJ’s pretty quickly because of the industry norm and the evolution of Pioneer CDJ’s. As a house/EDM and ElectroBollywood DJ, I love the CDJ’s and it makes it so much more efficient than carrying around technics and a crate of vinyls.

The Sinking of the Titanic An Analogy of Failed Leadership By Gregory P. Smith passengers. The thinking that made us successful yesterday will cause us to fail tomorrow.
“W
e have struck iceberg … sinking fast … come to our assistance.” On a cold evening in 1912 that message came blistering across the airwaves. Before they tapped the last bit of Morse code, those words became the epitaph over the lives of the 1,200 people lost on the Titanic. The ship was doomed as it slowly sank into its watery grave. Why did the largest, most advanced ship of its time sink? Those of us who study history or remember the movie may know why. It wasn’t the iceberg that caused the disaster. It is clear in my mind the real cause was failed leadership. Leadership is Responsible — Leadership is responsible for everything the organization does or fails to do. Leadership is more than a wooden figurehead. Leadership is not about power, ego or pride. Leadership is everpresent, touching, motivating, talking, checking and removing barriers, training, preparing, breathing and moving about. 64 I Dar Life I November 2014
The Biggest Is Not the Best —. It took over 30 seconds before the Titanic turned away from the iceberg, but by then it was too late. The larger an organization becomes, the greater its inflexibility. Large businesses soon grow into huge bureaucracies where rules, regulations, policies, procedures and “I need permission to make a decision” become the norm. Rank Has Its Privileges -Ranking is good for command and control, but not good for change and innovation. Ranking people limits their potential. Today, businesses rank and classify people — sometimes unintentionally.. Clear the lines between the classes and make everyone feel they are rowing in the same direction, for the same purpose. In a disaster, everyone is equal. The Truth Changes — The Titanic was unsinkable, so they thought. The ship designers were so confident in their ship they only had enough lifeboats for half the
Technology Makes a Poor Substitute for Authentic Leadership — When technology fails, leadership must prevail. Modern shipbuilding has gone beyond that.” Many businesses today have placed the wrong people in charge. They are not leaders, but managers. So when disaster strikes, who is going to step up and lead? Or will your technology cause you to shipwreck and pull you under? Leadership is About Training and Development — As the stern of the Titanic lifted out of the water, the crew and passengers struggled with the lifeboats. There had been no drills, no rehearsals, and the crew stood unfamiliar with their responsibilities. The boats were improperly loaded and only one went back to try to recover survivors. A good leader helps people improve their skills so they can become more productive. Leadership Looks Beyond the Horizon — A good “Captain” is constantly on the lookout for shifting trends, submerged rocks, storms and icebergs. Get the picture? Be on the lookout, scanning the horizon for the next wave of change instead of waiting for it to hit you in the face.

iss Tanzania is one of the country’s most awaited events, and it only gets better and bigger with each passing year. Lino International Agency, the license holders of this pageant, have left no stone unturned in past years, ensuring female participants always have a world-class platform to represent their country at a global level at the Miss World Pageant! Miss Tanzania is ultimately about the glamour and beauty of the 30 contestants, but a lot of hard work and effort goes
into the making of this event. There are a whole lot of people who work day and night weeks before the event to ensure a successful show.
Tanzania walked the runway with a wide smile and waved to a cheering crowd at Mlimani City, where the beauty pageant has been staged recently.
This year Redd’s Miss Dar es Salaam, Sitti Mtemvu, beat out 29 other women to win the 2014 Redd’s Miss Tanzania Pageant during the national finale staged at Mlimani City in Dar es Salaam. The show was a powerhouse of action, entertainment and thrill. With each segment, there was mounting excitement as to who will wear the crown of the year tonight until the audience witnessed Sitti take the title. Wearing a sleeveless, pale green gown, the newest Miss
Redds Top Model went to Jihan Dimachk. Miss Talent went to Nicole Sarakikya. Miss Sports went to Elizabeth Tarimo and Miss Personality went to Salama Saleh. The top five participants Jihan Dimachk, Sitti Mtemvu, Dorice Molel, Nasreem Abdul, and Lilian Kamazima - were announced immediately after the top 15. By winning the crown, Miss Sitti will pocket 18m/-, among other perks that come with the crown. She will also represent Tanzania in Miss World 2015. Pageant judges scored the 30 contestants based on a talent competition, a personal interview, their answers to an on-stage question, and their appearance in gowns and swimsuits. Lillian Kamazima was first runner-up while Jihhan Dimachk finished as second runner-up. Dorice Mollel and Nasreen Abdul finished in fourth and 70 I Dar Life I November 2014

compete internationally. In 1968, the government banned beauty contests in the country after advice from the ruling political party’s youth league citing it was not consistent with Tanzanian culture.
The audience was then treated to a classic dance act performed by a group of six boys and Vanessa Mdee. After the thrilling show, each contestant appeared on the stage for the second time in an outfit of her own choosing. The night was not short of entertainment while the aspiring queens went through a series of acts including nightwear and swimsuit trials and on-stage question sessions.
In 1994 when beauty contests were again allowed, the country had its first Miss Tanzania, Aina Maeda, who competed in the Miss World. Tanzania ended its decade long drought of shining in international beauty contests in Miss World 2005, when Nancy Sumari was among the top 6 finalists and also crowned Miss World Africa. Nancy remains the only success story to write about as far as the country’s participation in Miss World is concerned. Warm congratulations and best wishes to Sitti Mtemvu as she goes on to compete at the international level!
The Miss Tanzania contest started in the 1960s, when participants for the most part were from Dar es Salaam and the winners were not sent to

The Fault in Our Stars - by John Green
Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten. Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning-author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.
Stains on My Khanga – by Sandra Mushi ‘Stains on My Khanga’, is a collection of short stories and poems by Sandra Mushi published this year. The stories seek to spark a conversation about issues that are often swept under the carpet.
The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work by Alain De Botton
We spend most of our waking lives at work—in occupations most often chosen by our inexperienced younger selves. And yet we rarely ask ourselves how we got there or what our jobs mean to us. The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work is an exploration of the joys and perils of the modern workplace, beautifully exploring what other people wake up to do each day—and night—to make our frenzied world function. With a philosophical eye and his signature combination of wit and wisdom, Alain de Botton leads us on a journey around an eclectic range of occupations, from rocket scientist to biscuit manufacturer, from accountant to artist—in search of what makes jobs either soul-destroying or fulfilling. These titles and many more are available at A Novel Idea Bookstore. To inquire about book purchases, please call Tel: +255 022 2601088 or email: info@anovelidea.co.tz.

My Retreat to Tarangire Sopa Lodge A Luxurious Wilderness Experience
78 I Dar Life I November 2014
O
n our recent trip Tarangire National Park, which is generally considered the best national park on the northern circuit for elephant sightings, my family and I were spoiled with the opportunity to stay at Tarangire Sopa Lodge. The lodge lies 118 km southwest of Arusha, approximately two hours’ drive or about an hour by plane from Arusha town. After enjoying a long leisurely game drive in the park, traveling between herds of wild animals and along miles of Africa’s seemingly endless roads, our car came over a slight rise and the lodge appeared almost immediately below us. “Tarangire Sopa Lodge lies hidden among the kopjes, ancient baobab and grasses of the Tarangire National Park - home to the greatest concentration of elephants in Africa. Many can be seen around the lodge, allowing visitors a close encounter.” Built on different levels, the main public area of the building offered us an extremely cool respite from the outdoor heat as soon as we stepped into the reception. With a perfumed towel and a chilled welcome drink in hand, we suddenly become aware of the sheer size of the lobby with its glistening marble floors, colourful hand-woven carpets, and incredibly high roof. From here a short flight of steps took us up a level and into the lounge and bar with floor to ceiling windows, an outdoor terrace where we would enjoy an evening sundowner and, later perhaps, a game of pool in the area behind the bar. I particularly loved the broad veranda, which wraps itself around the lodge and gives prime viewing for the waterhole below, which we were told is filled during the dry season (June-October) and becomes a magnet for wildlife. November 2014 I Dar Life I 79
While circular guest suites with their high, conical roofs fan out to either side of the public areas, it is worth mentioning a word of caution here. Because the lodge is not fenced in any way, wild animals are at liberty to come and go as they please, meaning movements throughout the lobby area might be delayed by an elephant or two. While such a situation is 80 I Dar Life I November 2014
very rare, nevertheless the kind lodge guards insisted on accompanying us to and from our room each morning and night. On the other side of the reception lobby is a coffee shop where you can enjoy a wide range of Tanzanian highland brews along with freshly baked pastries. Adjacent to this area, a flight of steps takes you down into the dining room for a leisurely and delicious meal beneath an intricately painted mural on a high gable at one end of the room. Even the floor is a work of art with its multi-coloured timbers and copper nails. Since we love being outdoors, we were thrilled to find out that the restaurant has a terrace running along one side of its entire length so we could enjoy your breakfast with a view over the park’s treestudded, grassy plains.
“Tarangire Sopa Lodge provides a perfect location for short safaris or corporate and conference events, the perfect start or end to any safari, a place to relax in the sun, witness the day-to-day events of the resident animals and experience a level of attention to detail, guest comfort and service not to be found anywhere for miles around.” You won’t be disappointed staying at the lovely Lodge Tarangire Sopa Lodge. The Lodge promises a relaxing and unique experience. Between our lovely room, the pool, the game room, the hospitality lounge with complimentary newspapers and, above all, the stunning scenery and wildlife in the park, we wished our stay would last forever!
All Pictures Courtesy of Tarangire Sopa Lodge
The lodge features beautiful African-style buildings with 75 total spacious rooms, all with a private lounge on and a mini bar. Lodge staff let us know that they even have four rooms accommodating those with physical disabilities, as well as four interconnecting rooms suitable for families. Our room, like most of the others, had two queen size beds with mosquito nets and large sliding doors opening to a private balcony.
Weather permitting, lunch is always served at the lodge’s lowest level and beside the swimming pool with its central island and bar beside a dry river bed, which lodge staff told us fills up during the rainy seasons. As for dinner, the dining room has an enormous outdoor patio where we enjoyed dinner every other night, and this experience beneath Africa’s star-filled sky is quite simply one that we will never forget.

Exploring Tarangire National Park
A Low-Key Wildlife Sanctuary for Laidback Travelers By Wema Kajo “Tarangire National Park is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania after Ruaha, Serengeti, Mikumi, Katavi and Mkomazi. The name of the park originates from the Tarangire River that crosses through the park, being the only source of water for wild animals during dry seasons. During the dry season, thousands of animals migrate to the Tarangire National Park from Manyara. The park is famous for its huge number of elephants, baobab trees and tree climbing African pythons. It lies a short distance to the southeast of Lake Manyara and covers an area of approximately 2,850 square kilometers.”
T
arangire lies to the south of the large open grass plains of southern Maasailand and is the best-kept secret on the northern safari circuit. It offers wonderful panoramas of wide savannah grasslands dotted with open acacia woodland studded with large baobab trees. The park is central to Tanzania’s northern circuit, with Arusha and Kilimanjaro National Parks to one side and Lake Manyara and Serengeti National Parks and Ngorongoro Crater to the other. Landscape of Tarangire The landscape of Tarangire is sparse, with occasional acacia and baobab trees, and it offers optimum conditions for viewing animals. The Tarangire River, from which the park gets its name, is the lifeblood of the park. It runs through the park and becomes the magnet of vast herds of wildlife in the dry season. The river shrinks to a shadow of its size in the dry season, yet it remains the only source of water

for many thirsty elephants, wildebeests, zebras, buffaloes, impalas, hartebeests, and elands, which stretch over the horizon as far as the eye can see and which have wandered hundreds of parched kilometres in search of water. Tarangire Migration The Tarangire National Park forms part of a bigger wildlife ecosystem covering over 20,000 sq km, which include the Lake Manyara National Park in the north, as well as five other surrounding wildlife controlled areas. The key to this wildlife ecosystem is the Tarangire River, and the local animal migration in the area begins from this river, at the
start of the short rainy season around October every year. At the height of the long rainy season, the animals, which include wildebeest, Thompson gazelles, zebra and even African elephants, will be widely spread out over this 20,000 sq km area. When the wet season ends, the animals begin their migration back towards the river and spend the dry season July to October, concentrated in large numbers around the river. Flora & Fauna of Tarangire National Park The park’s most obvious features are the permanent Tarangire River, which runs the length of it, and the vast ‘swamps’ – which are, in
Facts on Tarangire National Parks Size: 2,850 sq km (1,096 sq miles) Location: 118 km (75 miles) southwest of Arusha Scenery: The beautiful views of Tarangire River, wonderful panoramas of wide savannah grasslands dotted with open acacia woodland studded with large baobab trees as well as the forest, which attracts a wide variety of birds Features: Forests, baobab trees, Tarangire Rives, and Maasai villages Wildlife Includes: elephants, lions, leopards, cheetah, wildebeests, zebras, buffaloes, impalas, hartebeests and elands November 2014 I Dar Life I 97
There are a fantastic number of colorful birds flying down and blustering along the rough paths throughout the year, with likely spots including the Paradise Whyder and endearing Yellowcollared lovebirds. Duringome months the birds can be quite mean and lean and slip easily between the lengthening grasses. The park is also known for its great avian diversity, in which it is surpassed only by Lake Manyara. Bird watchers will want to look out for the endemic ashy starling, rufous-tailed weaver and blackcollared lovebird. Nature & Wildlife Safari Experience Tarangire is also the best place in Tanzania to observe buffalo and huge numbers of elephant (up to 300 at one spot). In reality, the game numbers 98 I Dar Life I November 2014
overall are overwhelming: 3,000 elephants, 5,000 buffalos, 2,500 Masai giraffes, 25,000 zebras, 25,000 wildebeests plus over 1,000 fringe-eared Oryx. Predators range from lions (tree-climbing just like they are in Lake Manyara), cheetah and leopards. During the dry months, the concentration of animals around the Tarangire River doubles as in the Ngorongoro Crater. There are a few resident lions, which are easier to spot when the migration arrives to excite their taste buds since they don’t tend to abandon their territory. Tarangire is a great spot for elephant gatherings at the end of the rainy season in June, and zebra and wildebeest return together through July. Getting There Tarangire National Park is connected with Arusha and Ngorongoro by a good paved road. The park gate is 7 kilometers from the ArushaDodoma Road. Charter flights are available through companies such as Flight Link, Coastal Travel, Safari Airlink and Auric Air from Arusha.
When To Go The park can be visited at any time of the year, but the dry season from June to October is the best because of the high concentration of wildlife. Where To Stay There are both lodges and tented camps inside the park such as Tarangire Sopa Lodge and also several camp sites in and around the park including Kikoti Camp, Maramboi Tented Camp, Naitolia Eco Lodge, Oliver’s Camp, Swala Camp, Tamarind Camp, Tarangire Porini Camp and Tarangire Treetops. You won’t be disappointed to have a few days safari in the Tarangire National Park. This park is ideal for game drives, walking safaris, hot air balloon safaris, bird walks, day trips to Maasai and Barabaig villages and photography. Tarangire promises a relaxing and unique experience. If you are looking for a more personal and quieter gaming safari, Tarangire National Park could be your ideal location!

fact, dry for most of the year. Despite the fact that Tarangire is drier than the Serengeti, its vegetation is generally much more dense including densely packed elephant grass, large areas of mixed acacia woodlands and some lovely ribbons of riverine forest.
