Flamenco Taarab Concert

A Unique Spanish Cultural Experience in Dar Es Salaam By Wema Kajo

Taarab Concert in partnership with the Embassy of Spain.

The well-known style of Flamenco Taarab Concert was performed by Master guitarist Ricardo García, who has created together with Tanzanian artists a collaborative show where the traditions of Spanish music meet Swahili music heritage.” The visibly energetic man, who admits to being a flamenco guitarist also plays Spanish classical style guitar and has a great love for fusion music. In addition to Flamenco, he enjoys playing with musicians of different genres, as he has been doing for the last four decades. Therefore, his own developed personal style can be heard to have influences from other musical genres. This was apparent when listening to him join local young and seasoned musicians, last Thursday to present a repertoire of sounds drawn from Taarab, Bongo Flava, Traditional and of course Flamenco vibes. When playing with African musicians, he told ‘Dar Life’ that he gets some inspiration

ape Town-based band, The CITY, has graced Tanzania for the first time. They played shows at The Slow Leopard, and on the opening night of the Time2Dance Festival, held at Nafasi Art Space. There was a diverse turnout of people who’d come to see the wonderful dance performances programmed. The night ended on a high note when most of the audience took to the dance floor during The CITY’s set.

“They were warmly received as the audience loved their groovy, soulful, high energy “Afro future” electronic sounds. They’ve been playing to great crowds in Zanzibar, at gigs in Stone Town (DCMA and Six Degrees South) and in Jambiani on the east coast, at popular venues, the Red Monkey Lodge and Coco Blue.”

Bagamoyo was meant to be the last place to host them before they head back to South Africa - they played at the Karibu Music Festival and at the Firefly Lodge. However, due to a great response from the crowd and the owner, The CITY was invited for a surprise return visit to The Slow Leopard in Dar, which took place just hours before the band flew back home. The CITY was supported in their tour by mobility funding from Concerts SA, with logistical and

Diabetes Awareness Day

Free Diabetes Test and Consultation Service lthough 24 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes, it's estimated that an additional 5.7 million people have the disease but don't know it.

“Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affects how your body uses blood sugar (glucose). Glucose is vital to your health because it's an important source of energy for the cells that build up your muscles and tissues. It's also your brain's main source of fuel.” If you have diabetes, regardless what type it is, it means you have too much glucose in your blood. The causes may differ. Chronic diabetes conditions include Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Potentially reversible diabetes conditions include Prediabetes. It’s a condition when your blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy but may resolve after the baby is delivered. Signs and Symptoms of 52 I Dar Life I November 2016

Diabetes: • Feeling excessively tired. • Unquenchable thirst. • Frequent urination. • Numbness and/or tingling in feet or hands. • Changes in eyesight, such as blurry vision. • Unexpected weight loss. • Increase in infections or wounds that won't heal. • Breath that smells fruity.

If you, or someone you know, has one or more of these symptoms then make an appointment to see your doctor. While 21 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes, there are about 8.1 million people who are walking around with the disease and don't know it (27.8 percent of people with diabetes are undiagnosed). Symptoms of diabetes vary from person to person. However, the earlier you catch them, the better it is for your overall health and diabetes care.

It sure is worth getting to know and keeping a lookout for the symptoms of diabetes, especially if any of the below may apply to you. • You are above age of 45. • You have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes. • You are overweight and/ or inactive. • You are African American, an Alaska native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, or Pacific Islander American and are experiencing atypical symptoms.

November 14th is World Health Organization (W.H.O) Diabetes Awareness Day. Sali International Hospital is offering free random Sugar Testing, Body Mass Index (BMI) and Blood Pressure measurement from 14th to 30th November. CAREER

5 Tips for successful career planning An Activity for Job-Seekers of All Ages By Randall S. Hansen

Here are 5 tips to help you achieve successful career planning: 1. Examine your pastimes and hobbies. In your dream job, you will be doing all the things you enjoy, and none of the things you don’t enjoy. What kind of job would that be? Career planning provides a great opportunity to examine the activities you like doing when you’re not working. Think you can’t make a hobby into a career? People do it all the time, and are happier for it. 2. Review career and job trends. Even if jobs in your career field are decreasing, if you have excellent skills and know how to market yourself, you should be able to find a new job. It’s important to see where job growth is expected, especially in the career fields that most interest you. Conducting this research also gives you the power to adjust and strengthen your unique 42 II Dar DarLife Life II November October 2012 62 2016

set of accomplishments, skills, and education that makes you stand out. 3. Set career and job goals. A major component of career planning is setting short-term (in the coming year) and longterm (beyond a year) career and job goals. Once you initiate this process, another component of career planning becomes reviewing and adjusting those goals as your career plans progress or change - and developing new goals once you accomplish your previous goals. 4. Explore new education/ training opportunities. The world is constantly changing, and everybody is looking for new ways of doing business. Never pass up chances to learn and grow as a person and as a worker; part of career planning is going beyond passive acceptance of training opportunities to finding new ones that will help enhance or further your skill set. Look for educational experiences within your company, your professional association, your local universities and community colleges, as well as online distance-learning programs -- and then find a way achieve them. 5. Build your network. Did you know that more than 50% of all jobs are obtained from contact networks? Spend some time building new contacts, and don’t forget to maintain the ones you already have. One of the best ways to get serious

information from your network is to regularly ask your contacts how they are, what they do, and what is new about their careers. Don’t wait too long between career planning sessions. Career planning can have multiple benefits, from goalsetting to career change, to a more successful life. Once you begin regularly reviewing and planning your career using the tips provided in this article, you’ll find yourself better prepared for whatever lies ahead in your career -- and in your life.

C

areer planning is not an activity that should be done once -- in high school or college -- and then left behind as we move forward in our jobs and careers. Rather, career planning is a rewarding activity that is best done on a regular basis, especially given the fact that the average worker will change careers (not jobs) multiple times over his or her lifetime. And it’s never too soon or too late to start your career planning.

BUSINESS COMPASS

Top 5 Business Plan Help for 2012 The Right Business for You

Know the ins and outs of the business

Don’t fall into the trap of starting a particular business just because someone tells you, “It’s a sure thing.” Potential customers will part with their hard-earned money only if you convince them that they’re getting their money’s worth, so you’ll need to know what you’re doing, no matter what the task.

Choosing a business you know

Starting a business in which you already have experience has many advantages. You can use your knowledge about the industry, your training and skills, and your network of contacts, who might help you find financing, suppliers and customers. If you’re interested in turning something you know and love into a business, talk to people you’ve worked with about what it takes to run that kind of business. Learn all you can about start-up costs, overhead expenses and how much revenue you can expect to make. If you have several interests but aren’t sure which would make the best business, consider how you can translate your strengths, education and skills into business opportunities, and research the marketplace to see which types of business are presently needed in your area.

Starting a business in an unfamiliar industry

Unfortunately, the lure of quick profits convinces many people to start businesses in areas they know little or nothing about. This is a sure recipe for failure. If you don’t know much about the business you want to start, but are set on it, be prepared to spend enough time learning it before you begin.

Research and evaluate your business idea

Here’s a step-by-step guide to evaluating

66 I Dar Life I November 2016

whether you and your chosen business are a good fit.

Try it out. Before you start a business

of your own, get some experience in the industry or profession that interests you — even if you work for free. Learn everything you can about every aspect of the business. For example, if you want to start a pasta shop, but don’t know ravioli from cannelloni, go out and get a job with a pasta maker. After a few months, you should be an expert in every aspect of pasta prep, from mixing eggs and flour to flattening the dough and slicing it into strips.

Talk to entrepreneurs in the same field. If you’re not familiar with the business you want to start and you’re unable to find work in the field, talk with others who provide the product or service that interests you. To increase your chances of getting interviews and reliable answers to your questions, it’s best to do this in a different locale from the one in which you plan to locate. Small business owners are often quite willing to share their knowledge once they are sure you will not compete with them.

Evaluate whether you enjoy the work and excel at it.

If not, find a new venture. It’s a lot harder to make a success of a business you don’t like, and it’s unlikely you’ll like something you’re not good at. If you enjoyed the work and determined you were skilled enough to base your own business on it, go on to the next step. Judge your ability and desire to handle every aspect of the business. If you don’t want to or can’t pitch in wherever and whenever something needs to be done — whether it involves manufacturing a product, dealing with customers or keeping

If you want to wor k for yourself, bu t don’t have a particular business in mind, you’re prob ably wonde ring what kind of busi start. Fortun ness you should ately, the an swer is always th e same: star t a venture yo u know intimately. the books — you should think twice about starting that kind of business.

Determine whether the business has a solid chance of turning a profit. After

working in the field for a few months, you should have a good idea of whether the business is a potential money maker. To be sure, you should analyze your market and conduct a break-even analysis, a preliminary financial projection that shows you the amount of revenue you’ll need to bring in to cover your expenses (this amount is called your break-even point). If you’re able to bring in more revenues than your break-even point, you’ll be in the black (that is, you’ll make a profit).

Evaluate the risk this particular business requires. Even the best-laid

plans can sour if you pick an unusually risky business. For instance, the following businesses have higher than average failure rates such as computer stores laundries and dry cleaners, florists, used car dealerships, gas stations, trucking firms, restaurants, infant clothing stores, bakeries and grocery and meat stores. If your business idea is on this list, don’t despair — it doesn’t mean you should automatically abandon it. However, you’ll need to be more critical and careful with the numbers when preparing your business plan.

By A Novel Idea

Library of Souls by Ransom Riggs

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is back in the third installment of the bestselling series - YA novels. Time is running out for the Peculiar Children. With a dangerous madman on the loose, and their beloved Miss Peregrine still in danger, it’s up to Jacob Portman to channel his newfound abilities and defeat Caul before he loses his friends - and their world - forever! This action packed adventure features all new Peculiar photographs from times and places all over the world.

Double Down by Jeff Kinney

Get ready folks, Book 11 in the phenomenally bestselling Diary of a Wimpy Kid series is coming! The pressure is really piling up on Greg Heffley. His mom thinks video games are turning his brain to mush, so she wants her son to put down the controller and explore his ‘creative side.’ As if that’s not scary enough, Halloween is just around the corner and the frights are creeping in for Greg from every angle. When Greg discovers a bag of gummy worms, it instantly sparks him with an idea. Can he get his mom off his back by making a movie? And will he become rich and famous in the process? Or will doubling down on this plan just double Greg’s troubles?

The Sellout by Paul Beatty

Winner of the Man Booker Prize 2016, The Sellout showcases a comic genius at the top of his game. It all begins with a biting satire about a young man’s isolated upbringing and the race trial that sends him to the Supreme Court. Born in Dickens on the southern outskirts of Los Angeles, the narrator of The Sellout spent his childhood as the subject in his father’s racially charged psychological studies. He is told that his father’s work will lead to a memoir, which will solve their financial woes. But when his father is killed in a drive-by shooting, he discovers there never really was a memoir! All that’s left is a bill for a drive through funeral. What’s more thrilling is that Dickens has literally been wiped off the map to save California from further embarrassment. Fuelled with despair, the narrator sets out to right this wrong with the most outrageous action conceivable, by reinstating slavery and segregating the local high school. This action lands him in the hands of the Supreme Court. In his trademark absurdist style - which has the uncanny ability to make readers want to both laugh and cry, The Sellout is an outrageously entertaining indictment of our time. These titles and many more are available at A Novel Idea Bookstore. To inquire about book purchases, please call Tel: +255 022 2601088 or email: info@anovelidea.co.tz.

Saadani National Park 80 I Dar Life I November 2016

Saadani is a one of a kind paradise where beach life meets wilderness. This gives you not only the opportunity to plunge into the Indian Ocean straight after your safari, but also to be submerged in a unique display of both marine and mainland flora and fauna in a naturally fascinating setting. Saadani is the only wildlife sanctuary in Tanzania bordering the Indian Ocean. Gazetted in 2005, it encompasses a well-preserved ecosystem including the former Saadani game reserve, the former Mkwaja ranch area, the Wami River as well as the Zaraninge Forest. Many villages are dotted around the boundaries of the park. Saadani village itself once was an important harbour-town and slave-trading centre in East Africa. Nowadays it is a small Swahili village of about 800 inhabitants whose livelihood is mostly fishing.

Bird watchers will be treated to not-often-seen migratory birds that love the shore The coastal vegetation zones range from seashore full of palm trees, through the tidal mangrove forest that form a buffer between ocean and land, to the Wami River shore where the huge sycamore fig is found. Its semi open woodlands closely resemble Selous GR, while the vast grassy area close to the tourism office is named ‘Serengeti Ndogo’ (Small Serengeti) and lives up to the expectations.

Saadani is where crab meets elephant and the roar of a lion might interrupt your tanning. All the usual suspects, such as zebra, buffalo, elephant, warthog, giraffe, wildebeest and waterbuck are present. But you also stand a high chance of capturing different types of hartebeest, the big-eyed Rondo Galago and the elusive sable antelope on camera during your jeep or walking safari. Lion, leopard and spotted hyena might be harder to find, but this makes a sighting an even greater joy.

The vast grassy area is named ‘Serengeti Ndogo’ (Small Serengeti) and lives up to the expectations Taking a boat on the Wami River will definitely add to the fun; here you are as close as one likes to get to hippo, crocodile and flamingo. Bird watchers will also be treated to not-often-seen migratory birds that love the shore, such as different kinds of sandpiper, Eurasian oystercatcher and the common greenshank. On the beach you get to enjoy even more special sightings: breeding green turtles – Saadani’s beaches are one of Tanzania’s best breeding sites – with dolphins and humpback whales putting on their show in the Indian Ocean beyond.

• Dry season: July – September, wet season: November – May (less rainy in December – February). • Best time to visit: June – September. • The park is accessible by road or air. • By road: 1) Dar es Salaam – Chalinze – village of Mandera (good tarmac road, 160 km/2-3 hours) then village of Mandera – Mvave Gate – Saadani National Park tourism office (rough road, 65 km/2 hours). 2) Town of Tanga – Pangani – Mkwaja Gate (earth road, 120 km/3-5 hours. 3) Dar es Salaam – Bagamoyo – Saadani • By air: several safari companies organise private flights from Dar es Salaam Zanzibar and other major Cities.

Accommodation Inside the park: one private lodge, bandas, rest house and campsites. Booking for bandas, rest house and campsites contact the Park. Outside the park: one lodge (close to the border).

What to do Game drives, boat trips, guided hiking, bird watching, sun bathing and visiting the Saadani fishing village which used to be a buzzing trading centre.

• Starting as a Game Reserve in 1962, Saadani became the 13th National Park in Tanzania in 2005. • Since the nineties several new areas have been added to the park, resulting in the Saadani ecosystem that covers 1,100 km2 (around 15 km shoreline). From south to north it stretches 69 km. • Height: the majority of the park is at sea level. Although the highest point is 350 m, most elevations don’t go beyond 40 m. • Tides: spring tides of up to 1,5 m can flow inland. • Saadani has a tropical, hot climate with an average temperature of 25-27 °C all year round (30 °C daytime, 20-24 °C night-time).

World Heritage Sites From the Heights of Kilimanjaro to Depths of Ngorongoro Crater By Simon Sameja

Tanzania is a country which encompasses an extraordinary history and an abundance of natural wonders; therefore it is no surprise Tanzania has eight World Heritage Sites… but do you know them all?

“These chosen sites are a fundamental reminder why interaction between people and nature must achieve a balance of preservation and conservation between the two”.

KILIMANJARO NATIONAL PARK

KONDOA ROCK ART SITE

The Kilimanjaro National Park is located near Moshi, Tanzania. It is centered on the iconic and dramatic snow-clad slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, which covers an area of 753 km (291 square miles). In 1973, the mountain above the tree line was classified as a National Park and was opened to public access in 1977, but it wasn’t until 1987 UNESCO listed the park as a World Heritage Site.

The Kondoa rock art site is a series of caves carved into the side of a hill looking out over the steppe. The cave site is nine kilometers off the main highway from Kondoa to Arusha, about 20 km north of Kondoa. The site has a spectacular collection of images from over 150 shelters depicting elongated people, animals, and hunting scenes. Today many of the shelters are still considered to have ritual associations with the people who live nearby, reflecting their beliefs and cosmological traditions.

THE NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA

SELOUS GAME RESERVE

The Selous Game Reserve covers a total area of 54,600 km (21,081 square miles) and is one of largest fauna reserves of the world, located in the south of Tanzania. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to the diversity of its wildlife and undisturbed nature. The reserve is home to typical savannah animals such as elephants, hippopotami, the rare African Wild Dog and crocodiles, which are all found in larger numbers compared to any other African park. SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) boasts the finest blend of landscapes, wildlife, people and archaeological sites in Africa and is situated 180 km west of Arusha. The rich pasture and permanent water of the crater floor supports a large resident population of wildlife of up to 25,000 predominantly grazing animals. The conservation area is administered by the NCA Authority, and its boundaries follow the boundary of the Ngorongoro Division of Ngorongoro District. It covers an area of 8,288 km (3,200 square miles).

The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest park, and one of the world’s last great wildlife refuges, hence its World Heritage November 2016 I Dar Life I 89

Site status. It is most famous for its annual migration of over one million white bearded (or brindled) wildebeest and 200,000 zebra. The park covers 14,763 km (5,700 square miles) of grassland plains and savannah as well as riverine forest and woodlands. The park lies in the north of the country, bordered to the north by the national Tanzania and Kenyan border, where it is contiguous with the Masai Mara National Reserve.

fusion and harmonization; its great symbolic importance in the suppression of slavery; and the intense seaborne trading activity between Asia and Africa, which is illustrated today in the exceptional architecture and urban structure of Stone Town. RUNS OF KILWA KISIWANI AND RUINS OF SONGO MNARA

Stone Town, or Mji Mkongwe in Swahili (meaning “ancient town), is the oldest part of Zanzibar City. The old town is built on a triangular peninsula of land on the western coast of the island and was awarded World Heritage Site status in 2000. Justification for the inscription includes its rich cultural 90 I Dar Life I November 2016

The remains of these two great East African ports admired by early European explorers are situated on two small islands near the coast. From the 13th to the 16th century, the merchants of Kilwa dealt in gold, silver, pearls, perfumes, Arabian crockery, Persian earthenware and Chinese porcelain; much of the trade in the Indian Ocean thus passed through their hands. Serious archaeological investigation began in the 1950s. In 1981 it was declared a World Heritage Site, and noted visitor sites are the Great Mosque, the Mkutini Palace and some remarkable ruins. However, the ruins are also on the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger. The list constitutes a call to improve their safe guarding and is designed to rally national and international efforts for their preservation.

Marinate the beef with salt, mustard, oil, chopped garlic and keep a side for a while to get the flavor in it. After that heat the pan with oil and sear the beef to give color from both the sides. Take a roasting tray and place the beef in preheated oven at 180 degrees then roast the beef approx. 20 to 25 min. (The core temperature of the beef should be 65 degree while taking out the beef.) Keep the beef to chill in room temperature or in a chiller. After 30 min make thin slices of the beef and put them aside. Next step - take the bread slice it in to three layers as per the picture. Thereafter make a mixture of mayonnaise and mustard in a bowl. Spread the mixture on bread and apply onion jam on top of it then put a slice of cherry tomato, radish, cheddar and beef to continue the same way in triple layers. Finally garnish with some micro herbs and plate as desired with potato chips as sides.

For the Onion Jam: 1. Slice an onion and sauté in oil. 2. Cook in slow flame add sugar, cinnamon and a little water. 3. Continue to stir until it turns brown in color.

Travel tips

Language Swahili is the National language of Tanzania, however English is widely spoken, but learning a few words of Swahili can be useful and will be appreciated greatly by the local people.

Currency Tanzanian shilling (Tsh/Tzs) divided into 100 cents. Major foreign currencies – such as US$, Euro and travellers cheques are accepted and are convertible at banks and Forex bureaus in the main towns and tourist areas. Apart from most high-end lodges, credit cards are not widely accepted. Some banks in major cities offer ATM for credit/debit cards. Parks fees are payable using special TANAPA cards available at local CRDB & Ezim bank. Alternatively payment by Mastercard & Visa card are accepted. Avoid changing money in the street.

Major Airlines KLM, Swiss air, Qatar, Emirates, Oman, South African, Ethiopian, Kenya Airways, Turkish, Egypt, Rwanda air, Uganda air, Precision air, Fast Jet and Air Tanzania.

Health Yellow fever vaccination is required if travelling from susceptible countries. Malaria is endemic but is preventable: use insect repellant, cover up at sundown, sleep under a mosquito net and take anti-malaria prophylactics as advised by your doctor. Climate

Electricity

Generally dry and hot with cool nights/mornings in June – October; short rains from November to mid-December and long rains March – May, but the seasons can vary. The coastal strip is hot and humid all year round. Temperatures on Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru drop to below freezing.

230V, but power failures, surges and dips are common. Bring a universal adaptor and a torch (flashlight) or headlamp.

Clothes

Car hire

Pack lightweight, washable clothes plus a sweater for early morning game drives, as well as a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Long sleeves and trousers in light-coloured fabrics help discourage insect bites. Shorts for women are acceptable. Women should carry a wrap to cover legs in the villages and towns as revealing clothes can cause offence, especially in Zanzibar and Muslim areas. On the beach and within the confines of beach hotels normal swimwear is acceptable. If you have plans to climb Kilimanjaro or Meru, bring thermal underwear, light layers, a sweater, rain jacket, proper socks and sturdy boots.

Self-drive vehicles are available mainly for local errands or tarmac use. 4x4 vehicles for safaris usually have to be hired with a driver.

On safari Distances in Tanzania are vast and travel by road can be wearing. Plan to spend more time in fewer parks. You’ll see more and won’t return home exhausted. Keep your distance from animals and be quiet to avoid distressing the wildlife. Follow instructions of rangers or guides. Don’t leave your vehicle in the parks except in designated places. Keep to recognised tracks to avoid damaging vegetation.

Photography Protect your camera from dust and keep equipment and film cool. It is courteous to ask permission before photographing local people. If you intend to take a lot of people pictures, please bring an instant printer with you so that you can leave a picture with the people you photograph.

Insurance Take out travel insurance to cover loss of baggage or valuables, personal accident and medical expenses.

Tipping Tipping is not obligatory, but a tip for exceptional service.

Time

Cuissine Local and international cuissine are served in hotels and lodges.

Driving People drive on the left side of the road. An international licence is required. Plan long safaris carefully, ensuring your vehicle is road worthy. Please bring two spare tyres, an operational jack and tool kit. Carry extra fuel, spares and water.

Travel with children Tanzanians love children and are especially helpful to mothers. However, canned baby food, powdered milk and disposable nappies may not be available outside major towns.

Visas Check current requirements with the nearest Tanzanian High Commission, embassy or consulate, or your travel agent.

Security Tanzania is a generally safe country, but do use common sense. Keep an eye on your belongings. Don’t walk in the towns or cities at night – take a taxi instead. Don’t carry cameras or large amounts of cash and beware of pickpockets. Use hotel safety deposit boxes to safeguard valuables and obtain a receipt. Leave valuable jewellery at home.

Entry points • By road: Namanga, Tunduma, Horohoro, Sirari, Mtukula and Holili • By air: Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam) Amani Abeid Karume International Airport (Zanzibar) Kilimanjaro International Airport and Mwanza Airport • By ship: Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Pemba, Tanga and Mtwara to the Indian Ocean. Mwanza, Bukoba and Musoma - to the Lake Victoria.

3 hrs + GMT.
