Tanzania Young Scientists Awards 2015 Using Science and Technology to Transform Tanzania By Archana A. Kakad “The future scientists of Tanzania came together at the Diamond Jubilee Hall for the Young Scientists Tanzania (YST) exhibition. The students displayed some brilliant science project ideas they had been working on for over a year. YST is a perfect example of collaboration between Tanzania and Ireland as it was inspired by the work of Mr. Joseph Clowry in Ireland and Dr. Gozibert Kamugisha in Tanzania and is now marking its fourth successful year in Tanzania.”
A
project by Edwin Luguku and John Method from Mzumbe Secondary won the overall prize of the competition, as it developed an extremely beneficial idea to address the effects of plastic bags in Morogoro. “Our project is based on research about effects of plastic bags to our health and environment and it suggests ways to address the problem,” explained a brighteyed John. “We are happy that we have emerged the overall winners of YST 2015 exhibition. We are very happy for the prize as we will be visiting Ireland 20 I Dar Life I August 2015
These two boys from Kagera brainstormed ideas on how to prevent overload and cause accidents occurring from the same by creating a capacity device to detect the load on any carrying machine and beeping when it shows overloaded. Salivius and Derick from St. Kolping High School were the 2nd runners up in the Technology Category. Could the MV Bukoba accident have been prevented if something like this was in place? next year and on top of that we won university scholarships from Karimjee Jivanjee Foundation,” John explained. The runner-up award was grabbed by Emmanuel Lamalali and Emmanuel Sanga from Tanga Technical School. Their project is rooted in the Maasai way of life. Ticks, lice and other parasites are a serious problem for cattle. The Maasai community until now have been using chemical sprays to control them but these chemicals cause respiratory issues and other problems for the Maasai who
administer them. Emmanuel and his friend sought a solution for this from the Oltemuai tree. They collected the sap from the bark of this tree and developed a natural spray which helps prevent the parasites in cattle. Gloria Daud and Magreth Justine from Mkolani School in Mwanza decided to tackle a dilemma considered by many women: does makeup really render a person more beautiful? Gloria and Magreth visited a number of beauty parlours in their search and concluded that although beauty
“We have found that our country is facing environmental and health problems due to the effects of plastics bags and we have come up with a solution to this problem,” explained YST 2015 overall winners John Method and Edwin Luguku from Mzumbe Secondary School. John and Method will go on an all-expenses paid trip to Dublin, Ireland to visit the BTYSTE in January 2016 as part of their winning prize.
Tunu Ngajilo and his colleague Ally Salum grabbed the 1st Runner-up Position with their Innovative Project for an Automatic Irrigation System

products may make a person temporarily more attractive, they can also leave damaging marks on one’s skin. The pair suggested using natural products rather than chemicalbased makeup to achieve a safer, longer-lasting beauty. At the other end of the exhibition was a more personal project devised by Geofrey Ndunguru and Yusuph Mwenda, both visually impaired, who came from Songea Boys High School. Because of their disability the
boys’ research was aimed at addressing constraints blind students face in Tanzanian schools. Geofrey and Yusuph investigated why blind students are more likely to choose Art and Humanity subjects over scientific subjects. They found that this aversion towards the sciences was due mainly to a lack of suitable laboratory facilities or experienced teaching staff who are able to guide the visually impaired. “A total of 120 research projects were displayed
at the YST 2015 exhibition by students from all over Tanzania. What really caught the attention of onlookers was how students from remote areas of the country came up with impressive projects that had the potential to improve their living conditions.” Venance and Martin from St. Jude Secondary School, Arusha designed “An Automatic House Control System” which gives complete information about the security and safety of one’s home. The exhibition demonstrated the pride and enthusiasm felt by the students about their individual projects. What was most impressive was the students’ commitment to answering the research questions they had set for themselves and their eagerness in sharing their findings. As Mr. Clowry observed, “No country 22 I Dar Life I August 2015
on earth can develop without science and technology.” YST is proving a fantastic opportunity for opening up young minds, encouraging students to take their interests further and, in the process, producing the future scientists of Tanzania.
“We were very honoured to have the former President of Tanzania, His Excellency Alhaj Ali Hassan Mwinyi as the VIP guest at the Award Ceremony. “ YST work is attracting great interest from Government and Research institutions such that Ifakara Health Institute, being one of our sponsors this
year, offered internship to six students and three teachers for a week’s training at the Ifakara Health Instute for research related to Biological and Ecological Sciences. Similarly we had support from other academic institutes like Institute of Physics, energy related companies such as Songas Tanzania Ltd, innovation for development organisations such as Human Development Innovation Funds who feel that the work YST is doing and its impact on the Science Culture will truly bring the much needed transformation in the country. The competition is mainly supported by the Embassy of Ireland and BG Tanzania.

T
he Dar Choral Society is not just about singing classical music in Tanzania – it is about sharing our love of music by making it a bridge between all countries and religions. Originally founded in the 1940s by the European community in Dar es Salaam, the Dar Choral Society was revived in 2009 to become a very diverse choir including many Tanzanian singers. The group is without a doubt one of the highlights of the classical music choral performance arena in Tanzania. With its long heritage of over 70 years of performance in Tanzania, the Choir is showing all the signs of becoming a well-disciplined modern choir ushering in a new era of classical music in Tanzania. Covering works by the legendary Jean Sibelius, including Violin Concerto in D Minor, Karelia, and the Wood Nymph & Valse Triste, the group continued their tradition of excellence as young and energetic Hekima Raymond (Tanzania) conducted a whole choir and full orchestra of talented professional and amateur musicians, including soloist Samson Diamond.
“The Dar Choral Society held a classical music and jazz concert in the Kivukoni Ballroom at Serena Hotel on September 27th. This concert marks the ninth time that the choir has performed with an orchestra and is one of the major concerts that the Dar Choral Society hosts trice a year, generally in March, May and November. August 2015 I Dar Life I 37
The Orchestra managed by the choir is made up of members of the expatriate community, Tanzanians and diplomats serving the Tanzanian nation in various disciplines, hence its nickname – the ‘Choir of the World in Dar’. The long-term goal of the Dar Choral Society is to combine the beauty of music using choral works and orchestra. It aims at promoting classical music to thousands of Tanzanians through concerts and recordings of music in multiple languages, including Kiswahili.

“The Society also aims to educate the public in the “art and science” of music through their concert series, enabling people of all ages to participate in this high quality cultural activity. Their objectives also include developing the Tanzanian arts infrastructure and providing meaningful experiences through engagement with music.”

CAREER
6 Tips for Successful Career Planning An Activity for Job-Seekers of All Ages By Randall S. Hansen
Here are 6 tips to help you achieve successful career planning: 1. Look beyond your current job for transferable skills. Some workers get so wrapped up in their job titles that they don’t see any other career possibilities for themselves. Every job requires a certain set of skills, and it’s much better to categorize yourself in terms of these skill sets than to myopically focus on job titles. 2. Review career and job trends. Even if jobs in your career field are decreasing, if you have excellent skills and know how to market yourself, you should be able to find a new job. Having information about career trends is vital to long-term career planning success. A career path that is expanding today could easily shrink tomorrow, or next year. It’s important to see where job growth is expected, especially in the career fields that most interest you. The other advantage of conducting this research is the power it gives you to adjust and strengthen your unique set of accomplishments, skills, and education that make you stand out. 3. Set career and job goals. Develop a roadmap for your job and career success. Can you be successful in your career without setting goals? Of course. Can you be even more successful through goalsetting? Most research says yes. A major component of career planning is setting short-term (in the coming year) and longterm (beyond a year) career and job goals. Once you initiate this process, another component of career planning becomes reviewing and adjusting those goals as your career plans progress or change - and developing new goals once you accomplish your previous goals.

4. Explore new education/training opportunities. The world is constantly changing, and everybody is looking for new ways of doing business. Never pass up chances to learn and grow as a person and as a worker; part of career planning is going beyond passive acceptance of training opportunities to finding new ones that will help enhance or further your skill set. Take the time to contemplate what types of educational experiences will help you achieve your career goals. Look within your company, your professional association, your local universities and community colleges, as well as online distancelearning programs, to find potential careerenhancing opportunities -- and then find a way achieve them. 5. Build your network. Did you know that more than 50% of all jobs are obtained from contact networks? If you have a good contact network, it is also a good place to discover future careers, to explore new trends, and to learn about new opportunities. Spend some time building new contacts, and don’t forget to maintain the ones you already have. One of the best ways to get serious information from your network is to regularly ask your contacts how they are, what they do, and what is new about their careers.
6. Research further career/job advancement opportunities. One of the really fun outcomes of career planning is picturing yourself in the future. Where will you be in a year? In five years? A key component to developing multiple scenarios of that future is researching career paths. Of course, if you’re in what you consider a dead-end job, this activity becomes even more essential to you, but all jobseekers should take the time to research various career paths -- and then develop scenarios for seeing one or more of these visions become reality. Look within your current employer and current career field, but again, as with all aspects of career planning, do not be afraid to look beyond to other possible careers. Don’t wait too long between career planning sessions. Career planning can have multiple benefits, from goal-setting to career change, to a more successful life. Once you begin regularly reviewing and planning your career using the tips provided in this article, you’ll find yourself better prepared for whatever lies ahead in your career -- and in your life.
“C
areer planning is not a hard activity, not something to be dreaded or put off, but rather an activity that should be liberating and fulfilling, providing goals to achieve in your current career or plans for beginning a transition to a new career. Career planning should be a rewarding and positive experience.”
C
areer planning is not an activity that should be done once -- in high school or college -- and then left behind as we move forward in our jobs and careers. Rather, career planning is an activity that is best done on a regular basis, especially given the fact that the average worker will change careers (not jobs) multiple times over his or her lifetime. And it’s never too soon or too late to start your career planning.

Natural Beauty tips for Women over 50 Keep your skin glowing through the years By Beatrice Maro A few fine lines, a hint of gray. The normal changes of aging are inevitable. But with skin rejuvenation products, nonsurgical facial treatments, and hair care products, it’s easy for women over 50 to enhance their natural beauty.
What Happens to Skin and Hair as We Age
The effects of sun exposure, smoking, diet, and heredity become evident on our skin as we get older. Stress, gravity, and obesity also affect how well skin looks. And as we age, our skin doesn’t produce new cells as quickly as it used to. Skin gradually becomes less elastic and prone to dryness. Something similar happens to cells that give our hair its color, too. Hair pigment cells become less efficient at renewing themselves, which makes hair gray.
8 Natural Beauty Tips for Your Skin
A few simple steps are all you need to care for your skin as you get older. These natural beauty tips can get you started. * If you smoke, stop. Research shows that smoking prematurely ages your skin. * Just say no to sunbathing and tanning salons. Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are the strongest. If you must be outside, wear a protective hat, long-sleeved shirt, and sunglasses. Freckles, age spots, and blotchy complexions are linked to sun exposure. * Wear sunscreen religiously. Use products with SPF 15 or higher, and both UVB and UVA protection. Damage to the skin from excess or unprotected sun exposure is
58 I Dar Life I August 2015
known as “photoaging.” These changes can include fine wrinkles and an uneven skin tone. * Check skin often for skin cancer. If there are changes that worry you, call your doctor right away. Older, fairskinned people are high risk, and must have a yearly check. * Soothe dry skin. Use a humidifier. Use moisturizing soaps and lotions. See your doctor if you still have problems. * Eat right and hydrate. Good nutrition helps the body repair skin. Drinking lots of water helps hydrate skin from the inside out. * Try anti-aging products. For women over 50, over-the-counter creams and lotions may enhance natural beauty by rejuvenating your skin. Pentapeptides (a chemical compound in many new products) may help prompt skin cells to produce more collagen, which is the support structure that gives skin a firmer look. Prescription treatments and retinoid creams are also options. * Know about skin treatments. Botox injections can ease wrinkles in the upper third of the face. Chemical peels are effective in removing fine lines and smoothing skin,
especially around the eyes and mouth. Wrinkle fillers can plump up your skin and erase lines. Microdermabrasion erases ultrafine lines, rejuvenates your complexion, and improves skin tone and color. Laser resurfacing is another technique; it allows doctors to improve sun-damaged skin, scars, and other facial problems.

Amazing Face
Give Your Skin Some Tender Loving Care By John Lindsay
I
t’s safe to say that if getting a facial was as commonplace as brushing your teeth was, we’d not only have brighter faced futures, but just more wellness in our lives. So why get a facial? To many, getting a facial seems like a decadent luxury that’s beyond budgets and lifestyles to be considered essential or is something that they don’t need (e.g. there’s nothing “wrong” with my skin). So, in defense of facials, here are a few reasons for why getting a facial is more important than you think.
It’s the ultimate anti-aging treatment
Staying young and fresh-faced means taking care of yourself and your skin. What you do at home is only one part of this equation. The other is receiving the deep cleansing, exfoliation and hydration only a facial can provide. Getting a facial means you are doing your part to slow down the clock. Think of getting a facial as an act similar to going to the dentist for a routine cleaning. Brushing at home is necessary, but you rely on a professional for the deep cleansing and maintenance to keep your pearly whites in tiptop shape. Why stop at your teeth? 60 I Dar Life I August 2015
A little TLC goes a long way
Facials are more economical than you think. For 4-6 weeks after a facial, your skin will appear radiant, resilient and even-toned. That’s a great return on your investment! Not only will your skin continue to renew itself after your facial, but also your spirit will be lifted knowing that you’re doing right by your skin.
Better than a good night’s rest
Believe it or not, people have mistaken the results of getting a good night’s sleep for a facial. The effects are similar, but facials go one step further to remove toxins and dirt accumulated over the weeks, months and years. And at Anantara Spa our facials incorporate extensive facial massage, which improves circulation for an even-toned complexion. If you’re simply craving that dewy, healthy glow and can’t get a good night’s rest, get a facial. It won’t disappoint – and you’ll sleep better too!
Special Promo for Head - to - Toe Treatment
Most basic facials include: Physical and/ or chemical exfoliants cell renewal, remove dry skin, break down stubborn
This treatment is designed to give you optimal skin health for your entire body. You will feel refreshed, rejuvenated and revitalized after this treatment.
Refreshing Body & Face
Our Asian glow body scrub will exfoliate your skin, sloughing off dead skin cells, feeling soft and smooth followed by Signature cleanse facial to rejuvenate fatigued skin appearance. 90 min for 170,000.00 TSH

deeper within the skin for maximum skin results. Face, neck and shoulder massage - Not only is it incredibly relaxing, but massage helps to increase nutrients to the skin at the cellular level. Steam - The heat that the steam produces will raise the temperature of the skin and the pore, making it easier for
and deep pore cleansing. Steam is also excellent for the moisture is sealed in with When it comes to clogged pores and blackheads, there is no more than with manual removal (gentle squeezing) as skin care products will not remove blackheads. Mask - Used at the end of the facial, masks help to lower the temperature of the skin to reduce redness and to deeply hydrate. The song ‘Why This Kolaveri Di’ marked the start of a spree of nominations for a number of prestigious awards. Some of the awards he has been nominated for and won include Best Urban Act at the UK Asian Music
Awards in 2012 and the award for best newcomer at the BritAsian Music Awards, also in 2012. The album he produced for the Hindi film Shivali has also won two awards at the Global Indian Awards.” In 2013, he made his Indian playback-singing debut with the song “Oh Penne” of Vannakkam Chennai. “Bay of Bengal” of Biriyani and “Ice Cream Penne” of Vaaliba Raja are part of the list of popular Tamil tracks that Arjun has sung. Arjun’s family moved to the United Kingdom when he was only 4 years old. Little did they know that their young son would one day turn into a star. Arjun comes from a talented background and is inspired by his family members. As a child he became drawn to music because mother played the piano. He grew up listening to western music, but he was also exposed to Bollywood and Tamil songs. August 2015 I Dar Life I 67
He started playing instruments at the age of 4 and was brought up in an atmosphere where music was appreciated and valued. He learned a number of musical instruments such as piano, guitar, saxophone, and the drums but didn’t develop an interest in singing until his late teens.
become increasingly interested in Arjun. One could even say that many are ‘crazy’ about him so much so that there has been a steep rise in requests for him to perform in Dar. Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve, in collaboration with CocaCola, recently invited Arjun to perform Live in Dar es Salaam.
R&B and urban music are Arjun’s favorite genres of music, and he also likes the music of Donell Jones. He started off as a music producer and wrote lyrics for other singers during the first phase of his career. He won a regional talent hunt show at the age of 19 and his friends encouraged him to join the music industry. His first single, “Remember Tonight” was released on iTunes. His second single “Stargazer” was also a chart-buster, establishing him as a singer. Arjun admires many R&B artists such as Usher and Lola Jones, 112.The one artist that has inspired him the most is Ryan Lesley. In his short career, Arjun has already supported US superstars such as Jagged Edge & Blackstreet, and has performed at numerous prestigious venues across the different country, singing to crowds of over 30,000. at New Africa Hotel and also went on a Safari Tour with him. Check out his Dar Life interview below with our very own Richa Adhia. Dar Life: Walk us through a day in the life of Arjun Coomaraswamy. Arjun: It totally varies but some of my main activities include: performing (touring), composing and recording music, doing press interviews, social media promotion, meetings with my team
to discuss future projects, planning video shoots and song releases, vocal training, gym sessions, music related admin, eating, sleeping, partying... The list goes on! DL: What is your family background like? Arjun: I was born in Sri Lanka but brought up in the UK. My parents are very westernised, having lived the majority of their lives in the UK as well. My family has mostly worked in the public sector, for the UN or Commonwealth, but I am lucky to have forward-thinking parents who have allowed me to follow my passion and pursue a career in music.
Arjun’s Proud Moment: “It was satisfying to win Best Urban Act at the UK Asian Music Awards. Although I don’t make music to win awards, it was gratifying that my achievements had been recognised by the industry that I am part of.”
DL: How did you venture into singing? Arjun: Well to be honest I am first and foremost a musician and music producer. I have always played several instruments but my friends at school were the ones who encouraged me to sing. I began by releasing a few songs locally in the UK, but YouTube was really the key for me. I was lucky enough to have a few songs that went viral, allowing me to expand my fanbase globally. DL: How do you handle criticism and rejection? Arjun: The more success you have, the more people are exposed to your music and the more criticism you will face, especially when you remake classic songs. It is important to take on board constructive criticism; you have to be strong-willed enough to take what others have to say without being put off your own course. DL: How many tours and shows have you done, and what has been your favorite country so far? Arjun: I have lost count of how many total shows I have done, but I have performed in around
75 cities all over Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Australasia and North America. The only continent remaining is South America, and we are hoping to perform there soon!
Arjun’s Inspiration: “My main inspirations have been R&B artists like Craig David, Ryan Leslie and Donell Jones. Right now if I had to pick a couple of artists whom I would like to collaborate with, I would say Frank Ocean and Miguel, because they are pushing the boundaries and forging a new R&B sound.” DL: What do you like about singing? Arjun: The best thing about being a singer is that I am able to travel the world and connect with so many people. If I had remained a music producer I would probably be locked in a studio and not be able to experience that. DL: How was it for you so far to sing in Tanzania earlier this year and now again at an event
being organized by Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve in Zanzibar and Arusha? Arjun: My last show in Dar es Salaam was one of my favorite shows this year. It was an amazing turn out and a crazy crowd! If the shows in Zanzibar and Arusha are anything like that, I will be very happy. DL: What message would you like to share with your Tanzanian fans? Arjun: The Tanzanian people are so welcoming and it is a beautiful country. I would just like to thank them for their support at the last show. I am also hoping to go on a full safari this time around! DL: What do you value most in life? Arjun: Family. DL: What is something that we would be surprised to know about you? Arjun: I used to be in a heavy metal band when I was 15. My music tastes have changed a lot over the years! DL: What was the first record you bought? Arjun: I don’t remember to be honest but two albums that I remember listening to a lot as August 2015 I Dar Life I 69
London’s R&B Sensation Arjun, with the team and some event coordinators on an Arusha Tour.

DL: How do you keep yourself motivated to go on and keep improving? Arjun: I have ambitious goals and until I achieve them all I won’t rest on my laurels. Arjun’s Turning Point: “The turning point was definitely the moment when I decided to do a remix of the Tamil film song “Why This Kolaveri Di?” That was a complete experiment and no one was more amazed than I was when I woke up the next morning and found that it had gone truly viral.” DL: What do you do to motivate the crowd who attend your show? Arjun: I take a lot of selfies with fans at my shows. ;) DL: How many releases do you have this year? Arjun: In 2015 I have released two singles, and I am hoping to release another three more singles by the end of the year. DL: What are your hobbies? To be honest music takes up most of my time but my other main interests are cricket, graphic design, digital media and architecture. DL: Which celebrity is your ideal crush? Arjun: Deepika at the moment. But Aishwarya Rai is my all-time favourite
Our editor, Richa Adhia, having a cup of coffee while interviewing London’s R&B Sensation Arjun at New Africa Hotel. 70 I Dar Life I August 2015
DL: Are you married? What are the attributes you look
for in a partner? Arjun: No, not married. I would need to be with someone who understands my job and all the sacrifices that need to be made. She would also need to support Sri Lanka in cricket (even if she isn’t Sri Lankan).
Arjun’s Advice to Aspiring Young Artists: “Find something that is different. Try to be yourself - don’t copy others and write music that is true to you. If you have a passion for something if even it’s not traditional like medicine or becoming a lawyer just believe in yourself that you can do anything you want.” DL: What has been your most embarrassing moment? And happiest one? Arjun: Most embarrassing moment was probably at an award ceremony when I spilled a drink all over a very big music producer who shall not be named. He was not impressed! I don’t really have one happiest moment but I think getting signed to T-Series in India was one of the major breakthroughs in my career so far. Dar Life would like to thank Arjun - it was great fun interviewing him! We wish him all the best for the coming shows and events.

BOOK REVIEWS
Coffee break Join Dar Life reviews editor for the pick of the books with an East African flavour By A Novel Idea
Smarter: The New Science of Building Brain Power - by Dan Hurley Can you make yourself, your kids, and your parents smarter? Expanding upon one of the most-read New York Times Magazine features of 2012, Smarter penetrates the hot new field of intelligence research to reveal what researchers call a revolution in human intellectual abilities. Shattering decades of dogma, scientists began publishing studies in 2008 showing that “fluid intelligence”—the ability to learn, solve novel problems, and get to the heart of things—can be increased through training. But is it all just hype? With vivid stories of lives transformed, science journalist Dan Hurley delivers practical findings for people of every age and ability. Along the way, he narrates with acid-tongued wit his experiences as a human guinea pig, road-testing commercial brain-training programs, learning to play the Renaissance lute, getting physically fit, even undergoing trans-cranial direct-current stimulation. Smarter speaks to the audience that made bestsellers out of Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain and Moonwalking with Einstein.
H is for Hawk - by Helen Macdonald When Helen Macdonald’s father died suddenly on a London street, she was devastated. An experienced falconer, Helen had never before been tempted to train one of the most vicious predators, the goshawk, but in her grief, she saw that the goshawk’s fierce and feral temperament mirrored her own. Resolving to purchase and raise the deadly creature as a means to cope with her loss, she adopted Mabel, and turned to the guidance of The Once and Future King author T.H. White’s chronicle The Goshawk to begin her challenging endeavor. Projecting herself “in the hawk’s wild mind to tame her” tested the limits of Macdonald’s humanity and changed her life. Heart-wrenching and humorous, this book is an unflinching account of bereavement and a unique look at the magnetism of an extraordinary beast, with a parallel examination of a legendary writer’s eccentric falconry. Obsession, madness, memory, myth, and history combine to achieve a distinctive blend of nature writing and memoir from an outstanding literary innovator.
The Children Act - by Ian McEwan Fiona Maye is a High Court judge in London presiding over cases in family court. She is fiercely intelligent, well respected, and deeply immersed in the nuances of her particular field of law. Often the outcome of a case seems simple from the outside, the course of action to ensure a child’s welfare obvious. But the law requires more rigor than mere pragmatism, and Fiona is an expert in considering the sensitivities of culture and religion when handing down her verdicts. But Fiona’s professional success belies domestic strife. Her husband, Jack, asks her to consider an open marriage and, after an argument, moves out of their house. His departure leaves her adrift, wondering whether it was not love she had lost so much as a modern form of respectability; whether it was not contempt and ostracism she really fears. She decides to throw herself into her work, especially a complex case involving a seventeen-year-old boy whose parents will not permit a lifesaving blood transfusion because it conflicts with their beliefs as Jehovah’s Witnesses. But Jack doesn’t leave her thoughts, and the pressure to resolve the case—as well as her crumbling marriage— tests Fiona in ways that will keep readers thoroughly enthralled until the last stunning page.

anzania has a long history of human habitation stretching back to our most distant ancestors. The so-called ‘bantu migrations’, occurring between 3,000 and 5,000 years ago, brought agriculture and pastoral knowledge to the area as competing groups spread over the country in search of fertile soil and plentiful grazing for their herds. European missionaries and explorers mapped the interior of the country by following well-worn caravan routes, including Burton and Speke who in 1857 journeyed to find the source of the Nile. Traditional ways of life remained largely intact until the arrival of German colonizers in the late 19th century. On the Swahili Coast, Indian Ocean trade began

Around the 4th century AD, coastal towns and trading settlements attracted bantu-speaking peoples from the African hinterland. They settled around mercantile areas and often facilitated trading with the Arabs and Persians, who bartered for slaves, gold, ivory, and spices, sailing north with the monsoon wind.
“On the Swahili Coast, Indian Ocean Trade began as early as 400 BCE between Greece and Azania, as the area was commonly known.”
Between the 13th and 15th centuries, the settlements of Kilwa Kisiwani and the Zanzibar Archipelago reached their peak, with a highly cosmopolitan population of Indian, Arab and African merchants trading in luxury goods that reached as far as China. The completion of Portuguese domination in 1525 meant that trade, for a short time, was lessened, but rival Omani Arab influences soon took control of the caravan routes and regained complete control of the islands, even going so far as to make Zanzibar the capital of Oman in the 1840’s. In the late 19th century, British influence in the Zanzibar Archipelago, in contrast to German influence on the Tanzanian mainland, slowly suppressed the slave trade and brought the area under the influence of the Empire. Local rebellions in German East Africa, most notably the Maji Maji rebellion from 1905 to 1907, slowly weakened the colonizer’s grip on the nation and at the end of the First World War Germany ceded Tanganyika to English administration. Under the leadership of Julius Nyerere of TANU, popularly referred to as Mwalimu or ‘teacher’
Tanganyika achieved full independence in 1962. Meanwhile, a violent revolution in Zanzibar ousted the Omani sultancy and established a oneparty state under the Afro-Shirazi party in 1963. A year later, the United Republic of Tanzania was formed, unifying the Tanganyika mainland with the semi-autonomous islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago, and merging TANU and the ASP to form CCM, Chama cha Mapinduzi, the Party of the Revolution which rules Tanzania to the present day.

The area became the centre point of Swahili civilization in the 13th century, when it controlled the gold trade with Sofala, a distant settlement in Mozambique. After a brief decline under the rule of the Portuguese, Kilwa once again became a centre of Swahili trade in the 18th century, when slaves were shipped from its port to the islands of Comoros, Mauritius and Reunion.

Pedalling and Climbing Their Way Through Europe and Africa

ears back, three bikers from Sweden began an ambitious challenge named Cape to Cape. Travelling by motorbike, the aim was to ride from Nordkapp (North Cape) in Norway, the most northerly point in Europe, to Cape Town, the most southerly point on the African continent. Along the way they climbed the highest peak in every country they passed through. And the bikers mainly camped and ate in villages, carrying all necessities in panniers on the motorcycles. Originally, three of them started the challenge but one in the group, Alexander Gustafsson, left in

Nairobi to return to Sweden. Niclas Lautakoski and Albin Isaksson, both 25 years old, continued with the challenge into Tanzania and beyond. When I met them, they were recovering from their successful ascent of Kilimanjaro. Tanzania was the 13th country they had visited. For the ascent of Kilimanjaro, they were joined by Jim, the father of Niclas. All three managed to reach the summit via the Machame Route, and when I met them, they were clearly delighted to have reached the summit of Kilimanjaro. The duo finally arrived at Cape Town after six months.
“Before Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro they had climbed the highest peaks of Norway, Sweden, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya. The peaks of Malawi, Mozambique, and South Africa awaited them. They entered Tanzania at the Sirari border point and followed the road to Mwanza, Singida, Babati, Arusha, and then Kilimanjaro. After the ascent, the onward journey took them to Mbeya in southern Tanzania, and then into Malawi.”

ADVENTURE TRAVEL
Top 12 Mountain Climbing & Hiking Locations in Tanzania By Rahma Ally
“Hiking on the ‘rooftop of Africa’ is the adventure of a lifetime, and anyone from a seasoned trekker to a reasonably fit firsttime enthusiast can scale the snowy peak.”
A
lthough Mt Kilimanjaro tops the list as Africa’s most famous and highest mountain, Tanzania boasts many other mountain ranges and attractive peaks. Most of the country’s mountains and volcanoes are located in the north and east of the country. They vary from the dramatic crater of Mt Meru and the active volcano of Ol Donyo Lengai to tamer options like the Usambara Mountains and the comparatively gentle slopes of the Crater Highlands.
86 I Dar Life I August 2015 Oct | Nov | Dec 2012
Hiking trips and mountain climbing in Tanzania are becoming popular options for visitors not content to merely observe the country from the back of a game viewing vehicle. Instead, adventurous types are taking advantage of the many trails and peaks Tanzania has to offer. Mt Kilimanjaro
Crater Highlands
Rising up from the floors of the Rift Valley, the Crater Highlands form a lush chain of mountains and volcanoes that includes the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the surrounding Maasai tribal lands. Hiking safaris take visitors from Ngorongoro Crater to the foot of Ol Donyo Lengai and offer a chance to see some of the most spectacular and stunning scenery in Tanzania. Exploring this littlevisited wilderness is the hiking adventure of a lifetime. Within the crater rim, large herds of zebra and wildebeest graze nearby while sleeping lions laze in the sun. At dawn, the endangered black rhino return to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing on dew-laden grass in the morning mist. Just outside the crater’s ridge, tall Maasai herd their cattle and goats over green pastures through the highland slopes, living alongside the wildlife as they have for centuries.
Eastern Arc Mountain Range Above the gently rolling hills and plateau of northern Tanzania rise the snowy peaks of Mt Kilimanjaro, its slopes and glaciers shimmering above the clouds. Kilimanjaro is located near the town of Moshi and is a protected area, carefully regulated for climbers to enjoy without leaving a trace of their presence. The mountain’s ecosystems are as strikingly beautiful as they are varied and diverse. On the lowland slopes, much of the mountains are farmland, with coffee, banana, cassava, and maize crops grown for subsistence and cash sale. A few larger coffee farms still exist on the lower slopes, but much of the area outside the national park has been subdivided into small plots. Once inside the park, thick lowland forest covers the lower altitudes and breaks into alpine meadows once the air begins to thin. Near the peak, the landscape is harsh and barren, with rocks and ices the predominant features above a breathtaking African view. Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro is the highlight of many visitors’ experience in Tanzania. Few mountains can claim the grandeur, the views of Amboseli National Park in Kenya, the Rift Valley, and the Maasai Steppe, that belong to Kilimanjaro. Hiking on the ‘rooftop’ of Africa is the adventure of a lifetime, and anyone from a seasoned trekker to a reasonably fit first-time enthusiast can scale the snowy peak.
Stretching from the Taita Hills of southern Kenya to the southern highlands of Tanzania, the Eastern Arc Mountain Range has some of the oldest geological activity on the continent. Estimated to be at least 100 million years old with some formations up to 600 million years old – the relative stability of their climate means that the area hosts a surprising array of biodiversity, from plant and insect life, to spectacular bird species.
Livingstone Mountains
The Livingstone Mountains are a low-altitude chain that border Lake Nyasa. Remote and difficult to reach, climbing is largely uncharted and remains unexplored by trekkers and guides. Only very experienced hikers should undertake the trails.
Mt Meru
Monduli Mountains The dramatic crater of Mt Meru is often neglected in favor of its famous neighbor to the east, but a visit to this spectacular mountain, located within Arusha National Park, is an unforgettable experience. Its lower slopes are covered in dense highland forest, where colobus monkeys play and buffalo graze concealed beneath the thick foliage. The extinct volcano’s extensive base gives way to a perfectly formed crater, and another internal crater with sharp, sheer cliffs. An ash cone forms a subsidiary peak and the Momela lakes and Ngurdoto Crater are visible from the slopes of the Mountain.
Just a few hours drive from Arusha, the Monduli Mountains make a lovely day trip or can be part of a longer hiking itinerary. Maasai pastoralists herd their cattle along the slopes and cultural tourism programmes give visitors the opportunity to learn about traditional medicines and local Maasai culture. The surrounding views of the Rift Valley, Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro are incredible.
August 2015 I Dar Life I 87
Udzungwa Mountains
Mount Hanang
Remotely located on somewhat bumpy tracks 200 km southwest of Arusha, Mt Hanang’s extinct volcanic crater makes for a stunning feature above the undulating plains. The two day climb takes trekkers through numerous tribal areas, including the land of the semi-nomadic Barabaig, recognizable by their goatskin garments.
“The volcano erupts sporadically, sending small streams of grey lava down the crater rim and spitting hot ash high into the air” Ol Donyo Lengai
Overlooking Lake Natron and the bush land of Kenya to the north, Ol Donyo Lengai, which means ‘the home of God’ in Maasai, is an active volcano and one of Tanzania’s most spectacular and undiscovered climbs. The volcano erupts sporadically, sending streams of grey lava down the crater rim and spitting hot ash high into the air. The climb, undertaken overnight so hikers can experience sunrise over the Rift Valley escarpment, is highly challenging.
Pare Mountains
Located west of Dar es Salaam, the Udzungwa Mountains rise up from the western edge of the Selous Game Reserve. Vervet monkeys play high in the forest canopy, and small forest antelope can be viewed at the right time of day. Botanical diversity is exceptional, and the park is host to a large number of endangered bird species. Views from the peaks of the mountains, towards the Selous Game Reserve and the distant Indian Ocean coast, are incredible and well worth the effort. Five distinct trails cover the forests and mountain peaks within the park, and offer varying levels of difficulty for everyone from novices to experienced trekkers. Better yet, there are no roads through the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, so hikers have the area all to themselves.
Uluguru Mountains
Overlooking the agricultural area around Morogoro, the Uluguru Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc range and are named after the Luguru tribe, a matrilineal group that farms on its verdant slopes. The area has some of the oldest forest in Africa, and because the ecosystem has remained undisturbed by climatic and geographical changes for an estimated 25 million years, hiking in the area is particularly rewarding. A plethora of endemic bird and insect species are found here, nut permits are required to reach most of the peaks and permission must be sought in advance.
Usambara Mountains
Part of the Eastern Arc range in north-eastern Tanzania, the remote Pare Mountains are extremely rewarding to the avid trekker searching for hiking trails off the beaten path. Home to the Pare tribe, agriculturalists and pastoralists who have largely retained their traditional way of life, a hike through the Pare Mountains takes visitors through local villages and beautiful forests and offers the chance to see a little-visited part of the country.
88 I Dar Life I August 2015
The Usambara Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc chain in the north-eastern part of the country. Their western and eastern ranges are divided by a 4 km wide valley of small villages and farms, and larger peaks. Day walks and overnight treks take visitors through some of the most concentrated area of biodiversity in Africa. Bird watching is specially rewarding, and the views from the mountaintops stretch over the Maasai Steppe and, on a clear day, as far as the Indian Ocean.
