TUMAINI LA MAISHA FESTIVAL A Musical Festival to Support Children with Cancer By Jesse Gerald
On the 18th of August, Nafasi Art Space began it’s ten-year anniversary celebrations early with a special celebration for Tumaini La Maisha. Tumaini La Maisha is program based at the children’s cancer ward at Muhimbili National Hospital, which takes an assertive approach to children’s cancer treatment, always seeking to be much more than a medical center to all of it’s young patients; this approach has meant including nutrition, housing options, schooling, play therapy and art/crafts as part of the healing process, all of which is provided to the children and their families for free of charge.

It was night to remember and Nafasi Art Space welcomes everyone to many more performances, exhibitions, and outreach programs coming to you this September as part of SANAA YETU- a celebration of ten years on the art scene.
September 2018 Dar Life I 17
The Tumaini La Maisha Festival, hosted at Nafasi Art Space, was a chance to celebrate art, culture and music while raising the awareness and funds that would aid TLM in their fight against childhood cancer. It was also a chance to honor and celebrate all those children at TLM, and the joy they carry even through profound hardship.
After the workshop, the children were treated to a preview of the evening’s show featuring Tanzanian superstar, Barnaba Classic and Safi theatre, before everyone was called into the main hall for an exhibition of their work, and a video introduction of the Tumaini La Maisha Foundation. A dance party then began in the middle of the floor and went on until the sun went down and it was time for the young children to go. The night continued with a special dance performance by Tadhi Alawi, the creative force behind the Nantea Dance Company, and Nafasi’s own Managing Director, Rebecca Corey. Further thrilling performances followed; Barnaba returned to stage performing his hit songs, Safi Theater stunned on lookers with their acrobatics, Conscious Band slowed things down with easy beats and lyrical poetry, while energetic sets by Leo Mkanyia, Isaak Abeneko and Bwagamoyo Africulture had everyone on their feet and singing.

The festival began as the children of TLM and their parents arrived to take part in a finger-painting workshop. There was also coloring pencils and play dough for those who preferred not to get their fingers dirty. There was only a little instruction needed, until the workshop room was filled by busy silence and laughter.
The Nafasi grounds were transformed for the occasion. There were strips of multicolored fabrics hanging through trees, strings of shiny round lights the size of marbles arranged over doors and tents, and an exhibition featuring art made by children of TLM, earlier that week at Nafasi.

Where else can you enjoy fresh Italian coffee and delicious pastries just before your first tee? Does the kick of a Moscow Mule add some extra pizza to your swing? You will get all this at the event and while you are having the best fun ever on a golf course, you will be doing this to help thousands of people in Zanzibar. In 2016, the golf day event raised almost $16,500 for Makunduchi Hospital. By reaching out to the international community of Rotary, the event had secured a further grant of $80,000 to spend on specific further refurbishment to the hospital. In 2017, we partnered with Zanzibar Learning 4 Life, an energetic local educational NGO. We are working again through Rotary to multiply the $17,000 we raised, into a far larger amount to build a school at Unguja Ukuu.

September 2018 Dar Life I 27
The 18th Dar Cycle Caravan marked “international youth day “ and promoted “cycle 4 gender equality“ and road safety for cyclists. Biking can be a way to combat pollution, improve health, as well as save money and time, especially in a city with traffic congestion like Dar es Salaam. Unfortunately, many cyclists have been killed or injured while cycling in Dar es Salaam thus; a major goal of this event is to promote awareness and education to improve cycle safety
There has been a rise of the number of Tanzanians opting to cycle especially in the middle class. This indicates that cycling is becoming a lifestyle shedding its previous image of being a mode of transportation for the lower income bracket. It is believed that these middle class cyclists will help push a road safety agenda including the creation of cycle lanes, public bathrooms for cyclists, bike racks on the BRT buses, low taxes on bicycle spare parts and more frequent bicycle races. As is customary after the caravan, there were raffle draws in which several participants won 10 bikes, 8 tricycles, and 150 helmets as well as reflectors jackets to all cyclists participated.
Participants need not register or pay any entrance fee – next year simply show up to ride or jog your way around the track.

YOUTH RELATIONSHIPS AND SEX The Causes and Effects of Unprotected Sex to Youths By George Rodgers
On a very important note, many teenagers and the youth engage in relationships that lead them to engage in early sexual intercourse, as a result of either lack of knowledge or ignorance, many indulge in early sex as a result of peer pressure and curiosity that is enforced with adolescence.
I
t is a sad thing that they have no idea how unprotected sex can be of effect towards their sexual health. Concerning this situation, Dar life has tried to dig deep on the causes of unprotected sex for these young adults. 1. Fear: It is hard for a teenager to freely visit a pharmacy or a shop to buy a condom. This is due to the fear of people’s perception and shyness. Some fail to do so because they are afraid of their deeds reaching their parents as they say “Never know who is watching”. Also youths fear to ask their elders about sex and health matters due to either lack
36 I Dar Life I September
of bonding with their elders or limited time that they have with their elders and this leads them to make decisions on their own.
1. Early Pregnancies: Many youths encounter early pregnancies due to early and unprotected sex. This leads them to drop out of school and college thus fail to reach their dreams. Many individuals consider this as a turn point to practices like suicide and the increase of single families that dwell in poverty and dependency.
2. Limited Education on Sex and Health: Sex and health are among exciting topics that biology teachers can offer to their students because many students are curious to know. Many teachers fail to explain deep about sex and health to their students as a result of partial knowledge to the students.
2. Transmission of STIs and STDs: One of the outcomes of unprotected sex is the spread and transmission of STIs and STDs like HIV, gonorrhea and syphilis, which can lead to stigma and discrimination from others. Due to unprotected sex an individual can acquire diseases and spread them elsewhere.
3. Lack of Parental Role to Children: Many parents are afraid of talking about sex and health with their children because of either shyness or any other reason. Parents have a huge role towards shaping the children and it is a mandatory for parents to talk to their children on sex and reproductive health. Lack of this practice has caused many early pregnancies and transmission of STIs.
3. Early Abortions: Some youths tend to abort pregnancies at an early age which is not a good thing to do. It can lead to permanent infertility and far most death of an individual
Above were some of the reasons as to why the young adults engage in early and unprotected sex. Some might be engaging in

ONGALA MUSIC FESTIVAL 2018 Celebrating the Music, Life and Legacy of Legendary Artist –Remmy Ongala By Nyambura Mungai “Ongala Music Festival is a unique three-day live music event, taking place on Thursday, 23rd to Saturday 25th August, 2018; in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam, celebrating the music, life and legacy of Remmy Ongala (1947-2010).”
38 I Dar Life I September
Remmy’s inspiration was to develop the fusion of different art forms and musical styles. We aim to provide opportunities for local artists to develop and grow through building international networks, hence contributing to the social, cultural and economic growth of Tanzania,” Aziza says.
t is almost eight years since musician Remmy Ongala passed on, bringing an end to an inspiring and successful musical career. Remmy Ongala and his seven-piece band, Orchestra Super Matimila, were famous for fusing the melodic drive of Soukous, East African guitar styles, and Tanzanian rhythms. Ongala and the group accomplished their goal of inspiring audiences with their intellectual dance music. While his songs focused on poverty, injustice, death, AIDS, institutional corruption, and romantic passion, Ongala used his melodic guitar playing skills and soulful vocals to lead Orchestra, Super Matimila, through an experience of infectious rhythms. His music was picked up internationally as well, his song, ‘Kipenda Roho’ was used in Oliver Stone's film ‘Natural Born Killers’, whereas the famous song, Dodoma was a soundtrack on ‘Long way Down’ by Ewan McGregor and Charly Boorman. Posthumously, Remmy Ongala’s works received the Hall of Fame accolade, at the 2012 Kilimanjaro Tanzania Music Awards. Tanzanian Ongala’s performance at WOMAD that year, showed his band to be one
of the most compelling dance groups alive; Songs for the Poor Men, shows that they are pretty good for sitting around to as well. Ongala had produced one of the friendliest and most solidly listenable African releases of the year. The guitars, led by Remmy, sweetly counterpoint, harmonize and flow. He sings about serious topics while the percussion right up-front bubbles away.
“A relentlessly joyful mix of modernized melodies and timeless sentiments…’ NME 18 November 1989 ‘…some of the best, most liberating dance music to hit New York City this year.’ The New York Times 7 August 1989”. These were some of the comments on Ongala’s works. Aziza Ongala, the daughter of the late Remmy Ongala, is determined to keep the works and creativity of her father alive, by showcasing his vision and his music and by inviting artists to celebrate his legacy at the Ongala Music Festival. The festival aims to provide
a platform for artists across Africa and beyond, as well as promoting and showcasing local talent. The line up so far consists of a diverse array of talents, with names like King Kiki, Sikiinde, Msafiri Zawose, Swahili Ally, Wahapahapa, Siti & The Band, Wamwiduka and many more. Also, part of the lineup is the Remmy Ongala Tribute Band; made up of the remaining surviving members, with Remmy’s youngest son on vocals. The Ongala Music festival is intended to become a beacon of Tanzanian culture and artistry, not only in East Africa, but worldwide. The festival which is organized under the Ongala Foundation, aims at promoting and furthering the vision of Dr Remmy: “The foundation seeks to develop and promote and encourage artists to use their talents to sustain themselves in the long run, raise their aspirations and achieve a better quality of life.” For more information and ticket sales, check www. ongalamusicfest.co.tz

Recently Chilonga´s style was picked up by a very skillful young artist named Thobias Minzi, who had some success at an AFRICA/NOW exhibition, much to dismay of Chilonga. Recently Haji Chilonga visited the USA and we hope we will get some interesting observations from him on AFRUM.”
By Neema Maro
H
aji Chilonga was born on January 24th, 1969 in Lukuledi in Southern Tanzania. He comes from a pottery and blacksmith family background. As he was interested in drawings since he was young, he started off earning his living by painting commercial advertisements. He became a serious painter in 1992 when he was tutored by more experienced artists. At this time when Chilonga started to paint, he drew a few artists to himself. For instance he taught Aly Kitogo and he considerably influenced Florian Ludovick. All of these painters had very similar styles initially, but as time went they each found their own personal style and developed a distinctive imprint. Chilonga prefers
to paint portraits and local life situations. DL - What inspired you to start painting? Chilonga – For the most part I got inspired just by observing daily life around me. DL - How long have you been an artist? Chilonga - I have been serious about being an artist since 1992. DL - What mediums do you like to use? Chilonga - I prefer acrylic over oil paints. DL - Tell us about your first exhibition. When was it? Chilonga – I was so excited to have the opportunity for the first time. It was held at September Life July 20152018 I DarDar Life I 59I 45
BAMAYU GALLERY in Dar es Salaam in 1997. DL - Do you work from life, or from photographs or from imagination? Chilonga - I work from my imagination for my abstract style paintings, but sometimes I paint from real life too. DL - What moves you most in life, either to inspire or upset you? Chilonga - There are so many things I can’t mention all of them, but I’m always inspired when I travel and meet new people and new challenges. DL - Where do you feel art is going? Chilonga - In my country the current state of art is not good, because very few people have an understanding of art and its role in society. DL - What is the role of the artist in society? Chilonga - Musicians and actors have come to play an important role in society, but visual artists still have a very long way to go to be respected. DL - What technique do you use? Which is more important to you, the subject of your painting, or the way it is executed? Chilonga - The technique I use is abstract, but the most important thing to me is the subject of the piece. DL - Do you prefer a perfect smooth technique or a more energetic expressive technique and why? Chilonga - To me it doesn’t matter, either smooth or energetic expressive technique. DL - What do you think makes your work stand out? Chilonga – My passion comes through in my work and I think people can sense that. ACUTE CORONARY SYNDROME (ACS) Intelligence & Care by Sali International Hospital
A
cute coronary syndrome occurs when there is either reduced or no blood supply going to heart muscle through coronary arteries. The coronary arteries are blood vessels that supply blood to the heart muscle. If there is partial or total obstruction or blockage, this leads to acute coronary syndrome. The heart muscle gets damaged if not immediately treated.
heart attack signs. All vital signs like blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation and breathing rate will be checked. Assessment will be done by the doctor. Blood will be tested and patient will be given blood thinners (high dose aspirin), medicine to reduce pain, medicine to lower cholesterol, medicine to dissolve clots and other medications.
Acute coronary syndrome includes unstable angina and heart attack. Unstable angina is due to reduced blood flow to heart muscle and causes symptoms at rest. Heart attack occurs due to partial or total occlusion to blood supply with rapid damage to heart muscle.
Prevention is always better! Healthy diet low in saturated fat, low in salt and eating high fiber diet, more fruits and vegetables, limiting or stopping alcohol consumption, stop smoking, monitor and control the blood sugar level and blood pressure and regular exercises at least 2.5 to 5 hours per week of brisk walking or aerobics or physical exercise of moderate intensity. Medications may be required for optimal control.
According to statistics, cardiovascular diseases account for about a third of total global deaths from different causes and at least a third of these are due to coronary artery disease What causes blockages? The blockages/ clogging are due to build-up of fat, cholesterol and inflammation in the inner lining of arteries causing formation of plaque. This is called atherosclerosis. When plaque ruptures (breaks), a complete blockage can occur due to clot formation. What will result? There will be damage to the heart muscle that receives reduced or no blood supply. Risk factors for plaques to build up: Risk factors include hypertension (high blood pressure),
50 I Dar Life I September
diabetes mellitus (high blood sugar), high blood cholesterol (fatty substance in blood), tobacco smoking, sedentary life style, over consumption of alcohol, abdominal obesity (increased abdominal girth) and family history of premature cardiovascular disease. Other factors are age above 55years, male sex, post menopausal women and ethnicity. Presentation of ACS: Usually with chest pain that maybe like heaviness or pressure in the chest. The pain typically radiates to the jaw or neck or shoulder or arm or back or upper abdomen. Other symptoms include; shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, diaphoresis, dizziness or fainting. Some people don’t get typical chest pain but have a heart attack such as in elderly, diabetics and women. This is called a silent heart attack. What should you do? Immediately call paramedics or hospital emergency room and the patient has to go to hospital immediately for further assessment. At the hospital or when the paramedics arrive, an electrocardiogram (ECG) will be done to check for heart rhythm and
“Medications can be used to dissolve the clots and to restore the blood flow. Angioplasty with or without stenting can also be done in centers capable of doing this. For patients who are unstable or at high risk or who failed on medical treatment, angioplasty needs to be done. Regularly visit your doctor for health check-up and take necessary measures to reduce your overall risk. For more information on Acute Coronary Syndrome, visit Sali International Hospital or call us at 0222601276/0222601296/02226 01283.

CULTURE
Experiencing a Taste of Local Life By Wema Kajo
“Cultural tourism to everyone – the tourists get a unique, unforgettable

n Tanzania, a land of superb landscapes and spectacular wildlife, another attraction stands equally tall – the people. Tanzania’s people are among the most welcoming and approachable on earth, with a range of fascinating cultures ready to be shared with visitors. From the WaChagga of the slopes of Kilimanjaro to the now world-famous Maasai, a
56 I Dar Life I September
cultural excursion or a longer stay among local people is likely to become one of the most rewarding experiences of any holiday in Tanzania. Many local areas run their own cultural programmes for visitors, bringing income directly to the community and giving the people the chance to show their lifestyle to the outside world on their own terms. Primary schools can be developed through a tour of the fascinating slopes of Mount Meru, a health clinic is improved through a guided tour of the luscious green Usambara Mountains, or a kindergarten funded by a stroll through the tropical vegetation of the Rift Valley. Cultural tourism programmes are bene cial to everyone – the tourists get a unique, unforgettable experience, the
local people generate income and improve their standard of living, and both parties gain valuable understanding of another culture which will last long after the visitors have returned home. Most cultural tourism programmes are located near the main throughfares of principal tourist destinations, making a cultural addition to a safari easy to arrange. Guides are local people born and raised in the area, well-trained in their jobs and pro cient in nglish. Cultural tours can be half-day events or incorporated into a longer safari. Whether you spend the morning in a Maasai boma or trek by camel up a local summit, stopping to learn about traditional plants and tribal stories, a cultural tour is must-do for anyone wanting to see the rich life of the Tanzania people. Some of Tanzania’s best-known cultural tourism destinations include:
Home to some of the last hunter-gatherers in Africa, the Hadzabe bushmen have made the area around ake yasi their long-time hunting grounds. Day-trips or longer safaris with the Hadzabe bushmen give visitors a chance to experience a way of life that has long since vanished elsewhere on the planet. Morning hunts with the Hadzabe warriors, armed with bows and arrows, offer a fascinating glimpse into an ancient way of life. Honey-gathering, walks to nd traditional healing plants and food, and traditional dances are all part of the Hadzabe cultural tourism experience.
Kilimanjaro Why not combine a hike up the world’s most impressive mountain with a visit to its people, the historically progressive WaChagga? See traditional and modern Chagga art, culture and homes.
Maasailand See how the Maasai, among the last of the world’s pastoral peoples, are adapting to the 21st century in their own way and in their own time. Visit ngaruka, the lost city in the shadow of the Great Rift Wall, where Maasai mix irrigation, farming and traditional herding. In Mkuru, near Arusha National Park, short camel treks with local Maasai give visitors a glimpse into nomadic culture, as they climb nearby Ol Donyo Landaree.
Meru
Only minutes from bustling Arusha are spots that look and feel as they did decades ago. But everywhere, too, is transition as the WaArusha and WaMeru peoples adapt tradition to progress and science. Visitors can meet a traditional healer, learn about animal husbandry and agriculture, and buy carvings and foodstuffs from local handicraft cooperatives or women’s businesses.
Southern Pare Mountains
Walk the most remote mountains of northern Tanzania with local farmers, through traditional Pare villages and dense tropical forests. From half-day to three-day guided hikes, this is an opportunity to step into the culture of the Pare people. Visit the Mghimbi Caves, secret hiding place during the slave raids, proceed to Malameni Rock, the scene of human sacri ces to appease evil spirits up until the 1930s. Walk through the Ikongwe Village, believed by locals to be a gift from heaven, surrounded by mountain terraces and small waterfalls. Pro ts from these tours are used to subsidise much needed energy-saving stoves and educational scholarships.
Usambaras
Africa’s Switzerland, the Usambaras are a hiker’s paradise, with dozens of varied treks from half a day to a week. The stunning mountainous district of Lushoto was home to one of Tanzania’s great historical kingdoms. September 2018 Dar Life I 57

DEALING WITH A CAREER CHANGE Strategies and Steps to Implement It By Detricia Pamba You’ll want to sound informed so people know their time won’t be wasted connecting with you. Request a coffee, informational interview, or even to shadow someone after you’ve made the first move.
Nevertheless, it is very important to know and do these three things before you decide to have a career change. If you rush into things, you might find yourself moving from one unsatisfying job to the next.
Most people struggle with having a career change, especially when they are opting into a very different kind of field. In most cases, a career change doesn’t happen overnight. It takes work and preparation—but don’t get overwhelmed. Once you have your big picture figured out, do the following.”
1. Research
We know you know how to do some internet sleuthing. So, instead of scrolling unimportant things on your Instagram online, use those detective skills to start researching potential employers. Check out their social media, website, and 60 I Dar Life I September
any other information you can find so that you can make an informed decision on whether the company is the right fit for you.
2. Network
Make a list of people you know who work in the field that you’re interested in. If you don’t know anyone personally, that’s okay. Use LinkedIn to expand your search, and don’t forget to ask friends and family for their connections. You can even write an email to friends explaining that you’re looking to change careers and would love to be connected with anyone they think could help. Once you have contact information, look them up before reaching out.
Before making a big shift, consider whether there is an opportunity to rework your current job situation. Look at what you want and what would make you happier—less travel, working from home more, boundaries to disconnect, etc. If you are set on changing careers, there’s a lot to consider before leaving your current job. Before quitting evaluate what sacrifices you are willing to make in order to find a role that you love—can you take a pay cut, start in a lower position, do you have leverage to leave your job without having your next one lined up? Knowing the answers to these questions before hand will set you up for success and help narrow down potential jobs and employers.

It may take some time to grow, but we have written some tips for you that will help you prosper and grow your small business in a rapid way. Here are the tips to elevate your business. 1) Learn From and Connect With Other Businesses
62 I Dar Life I September
Visit your competition and introduce yourself. Nurture and develop a good relationship with them. Refer customers to them, as well. It’s a give-andtake thing. Don’t be afraid to ask them for help or advice. 2) Go Online We would often say to ourselves ‘If you build it, they will come!’ We build a beautiful place with a delicious menu offering, but they do not come. Create a website and social media accounts, but also real budget or strategy to promote your business. If you have not already done so, create a FaceBook and Instagram page and learn how to use their marketing tools. You will set yourself in a path to grow your business, really fast.
4) Follow Your Dreams Identify what your true motivation is for starting your business or for pursuing your particular path in life. Then study it, dream it, live it, and most importantly, never lose sight of it. And always, ALWAYS pursue with passion, desire, and the most definiteness of purpose.

Whether you’re just starting your business, or have been at it for years, advice from fellow business owners can be invaluable. You never know when words of wisdom will strike a chord and inspire you to grow and change for the better
“As a small business, you ought to also know your supply chain. Know the people who you are sharing your business with. Know potential people that you can buy from and who you can sell to. This will help you have good relations with others and your customers as well”

Saanane Island National Park
The fascinating Saanane Island recently became a National Park. A status that is well deserved. The island is a true gem, with green river beds, naturally sculpted rocky hills and landscapes surrounded by tropical waters. All of which is decorated by a wild array of birds, fish, insects and flowers, with a unique view over Lake Victoria and the landmarks of Mwanza City added to the spectacle.
64 I Dar Life I September
Saanane is the first National Park ever located within a city and the smallest in both Tanzania and East Africa, probably even in the world. Here, surrounded by Africa’s largest lake, you will find a peaceful hideaway away from the buzz of the city of Mwanza. The Island was named after Mzee Saanane Chawandi, a local farmer and fisherman. In 1964 the Goverment established Tanzania’s first ever zoo here. The objective being to promote conservation education and to provide recreation to the people of Mwanza. In the late 1960s, Saanane was teeming with wildlife, of which many animals were eventually relocated to Rubondo Island, also in Lake Victoria.
Saanane is the first National Park ever located within a city In 1991 the Island was declared a Game Reserve, to strengthen and promote conservation. Today, the island is home to free roaming mammals such as zebra impala, rock hyrax, velvet monkey and wild cat. And it is the only place in Tanzania where you might encounter the De-brazza’s monkey. Be prepared to enter a reptilian playground. Enjoy your lunch near the floats of crocodiles that use the island as breeding ground. Or look around for monitor lizards, agama lizards, pancake and leopard tortoises and many snake species, particularly python.
Saanane is a peaceful gem, surrounded by Africa’s largest lake As a bird watcher you might enjoy the island even more. Over 70 species of bird life have been recorded, including resident and migratory birds attracted to the unique mix of terrestrial and aquatic environment.
Be prepared to enter a reptilian playground • The Park covers a total of 2,15 km2 (both aquatic and land mess) including two islets – Chankende Kubwa and Chankende Ndogo in the south. • Getting there: Mwanza can be reached by rail, ship, air or by road, followed by a boat trip to Saanane. • By air: take a flight from either Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro International Airport to Mwanza. • By road and boat: you can drive to Mwanza from Dar es Salaam, Kigoma, Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Tabora to mention a few, or travel by ferry from Uganda, Kenya, Bukoba and nearby islands. From Mwanza it only takes a short boat ride (about 10 minutes). • Best time to visit: All year round. November – March for the most varied bird species and greenest scenery, June – August is Saanane’s dry season and great for picnics, game viewing and rock hiking.
It is the only place in Tanzania where you might encounter the De-Brazza’s monkey Accommodation Outside the park: luxery and budgets hotels and lodges in Mwanza. Inside the park: Exclusive camping (booking through the Park).
What to do Game viewing, bird watching, canoeing, (rock) hiking, picnicking, boat excursions (need prior arrangements). Sport fishing and water spots will be arranged in the future. Park contacts: saanane@tanzaniaparks.com Hotlines: +255 689 062 276 / +255 767 536 124

21 LESSONS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY (HARDBACK): BY YUVAL NOAH HARARI
Sapiens showed us where we came from. Homo Deus looked to the future. 21 Lessons for the 21st Century explores the present. How can we protect ourselves from nuclear war, ecological cataclysms and technological disruptions? What can we do about the epidemic of fake news or the threat of terrorism? What should we teach our children? Yuval Noah Harari takes us on a thrilling journey through today’s most urgent issues. The golden thread running through his exhilarating new book, is the challenge of maintaining our collective and individual focus in the face of constant and disorienting change. Are we still capable of understanding the world we have created?
BURN THE BUSINESS PLAN: WHAT GREAT ENTREPRENEURS REALLY DO (HARDBACK): BY CARL J. SCHRAMM
Would you like to get business startup advice straight from the man who co-founded Global Entrepreneurship Week and StartUp America? Well now you can. Carl Schramm, the man described by The Economist as ‘The Evangelist of Entrepreneurship’, has written a myth-busting guide packed with tools and techniques to help you get your big idea off the ground. Carl believes that entrepreneurship has been completely misrepresented by the media, business books, university programs and MBA courses. He believes that the perception of what it takes to start a business no longer matches the reality - which is bad news for everyone because it stops great ideas coming to life. Burn the Business Plan punctures the myth of the cool, tech-savvy 20-something entrepreneur with nothing to lose and venture capital to burn, showing that most people who start businesses are juggling careers and mortgages just like you. Burn the Business Plan is written to encourage you to get started. It demystifies the entrepreneurial process portrayed on television shows like Dragon’s Den. It doesn’t rely on largely irrelevant stories of overvalued tech startups, nor does it build on the largely mistaken narrative of a linear path from cold start to great success that is the essence of business planning, as taught in universities. This is the guide to starting and running a business that will actually work for the rest of us. Burn the Business Plan is for regular people who just want practical, real-world advice on how to start and run a successful business. It shows you how to avoid the common mistakes and what you need to do to put your enterprise on track for success.
CRAZY RICH ASIANS (PAPERBACK): BY KEVIN KWAN
When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn’t know is that Nick’s family home happens to look like a palace, that she’ll ride in more private planes than cars and that she is about to encounter the strangest, craziest group of people in existence. Uproarious, addictive, and filled with jaw-dropping opulence, Crazy Rich Asians is an insider’s look at the Asian jet set; a perfect depiction of the clash between old money and new money - and a fabulous novel about what it means to be young, in love, and gloriously, crazily rich.
