She studied hospitality management in Worcester and South Devon. Prior to Warren House, Carolyn worked at The Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge for 6 years.

“Hard work and more hard work! Being in my industry is a total lifestyle choice is my honest answer. My social life is interwoven with my work life and I must be one of the lucky few to have experienced all that I have during my career.

When I was considering what I wanted to do in life I think someone somewhere said ‘you’d be good in hospitality’ and I probably shrugged my shoulders and said well I’ll try that then. Little did I know that you start working and you become part of this ready-made family; my work colleagues became my parents, my siblings and my best friends all at once. You laugh together, cry together and grow up together.

Considering that I’m not from a close-knit family, I thought I’d hit the jackpot there and then.

You are always ‘on show’ though, I think you have to remember you are an ambassador for the business as you climb your way up and certainly when you are at my level. There is always someone

It can be quite disconcerting how many people actually know who you are! So as much decorum as possible at all times is my little rule!”

Have you always wanted to work in hospitality management?

“I was so naïve when I was young. I told a fib about my age to get my first job. So there I was at 15 years of age working as many hours as the full timers and loving every moment. What’s so heartwarming is that I met, just a couple of weeks ago, with my Restaurant Manager from my first job. It was a revelation to me that he knew I’d lied about my age and there I was finding that out 28 years later! He said he asked his wife which year I was in at school so he knew from day one.”

What do you enjoy doing most when you are not working?

“There honestly isn’t all that much time when I’m not

working in one way or another.

Modern technology doesn’t let you rest much. I love it, but it’s addictive and probably not that good for you. I have two breaks a year when technology is absolutely out of bounds though – holiday time. My husband and I love travel and usually take a cruise in the spring and visit the US in the autumn. Being on a small ship in the middle of nowhere with my head in a good book is my idea of absolute bliss. Seeing brown bears in Alaska or being on the bridge as the Captain navigates the Panama Canal were truly special moments.

Work life is enormously social; I’m the absolute opposite when I’m away. It’s about recharging the batteries, truly switching off, enjoying nature and creating some amazing memories.”

You are also a big supporter of women in business and a member of a women only networking group. What do you see as the biggest benefits of female power in business?

A true mover and shaker with a big heart Shiraz Mirza is living his second life committed to helping his community

D

arling editor Marja-Leena Toseland meets Shiraz Mirza, the Assistant Police and Crime Commissioner for Equality and Diversity for Surrey: What does your current role entail on a day-to-day basis?

“I work to build links with minority and hard-to-reach groups across Surrey, making sure they receive a good service from Surrey Police and the criminal justice system and encourage these groups to engage with the police”.

A large part of your working life has been committed to community work and local politics. Where does your drive to help others to such an extent come from?

“I see this as my second life after nearly losing my life to an illness that lead to temporary paralysis when I was visiting my home country Pakistan in 1992 and feel extremely lucky to be in a position

to help others”. Six months of rehabilitation in Kingston Hospital followed before he was able to return home and, eventually, to his work as an electrical engineer in a defence company.

How did you become involved in politics and community work?

“Meeting Brian Bennett in 1997, then the Mayor of Kingston, ignited an interest in local politics for me and, after a lot of persuasion, I eventually agreed to stand as a Lib Dem candidate at the local

elections. I was elected as the first Asian Councillor for my party in Chessington South Ward”. Shiraz’s rapid success in politics lead to him becoming the first Asian Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston in 2000 and again in 2007 and a deputy mayor in 2009.

Local politicians across party lines came together to form the Shiraz Mirza Trust and, with the help and financial backing of property developer Ian Dobie of St George Plc and Philip Champion of the New Malden based Timber Merchants, the hall was opened a year later by then Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone. A second hall in Worcester Park was inaugurated by Boris Johnson in 2007.

Shiraz is also a founding patron of Love Kingston charity, a governor at Kingston College and a Patron at the Hillcroft Women's College in Surbiton.

THE VICTORIA FOUNDATION a charity helping to improve many lives in our community

T

he Victoria Foundation provides medical support and equipment to those in need in the local community and wider area. This includes wheelchairs, which give disabled children greater independence, accessible transport vehicles, which ensure many elderly people are not isolated at home, bursaries for medical students helping to widen participation into medicine, and medical treatment when it is not readily available.

Individuals, charities and community organisations can apply to the charity for a grant to fund medical equipment and support. Richmond & Kingston Accessible Transport (RaKAT) has received grants from The Victoria Foundation to fund six fully accessible mini-buses which make it possible for hundreds of nursing home residents in the Kingston and Richmond area to go on much appreciated days out. The vehicles have travelled over 65,000 miles and are the most popular and requested vehicles in RaKAT’s fleet. The mini-buses have also assisted over 60 local organisations and community groups and provided over 35,000 passenger journeys.

The charity raises funds through donations it receives and from the proceeds of events it organises both locally and overseas. Staff and supporters of the charity are currently training hard in Richmond Park and the surrounding area for a cycling and trekking challenge in

Burma in February. The team, which includes Graham Ball CEO of the charity and the Development Director Lorna Votier, will be cycling or trekking up to 7 hours a day for five days in temperatures of 26C. The Victoria Foundation Burma Challenge team is aiming to raise £25,000 to continue to fund much needed medical equipment and support to help improve many more lives in the local and wider area. Team members, including Nikki Williams of Jumblebee online auctions, have been working very hard to reach their fundraising target. Nikki raised £1,840 by organising an online auction of products and business services generously donated by the ladies of the Athena Network Surrey and South West London.

MUMS ARMY Needs You to help mums in developing countries

magine walking 6km, carrying 20kg of water on your head, whilst also carrying a baby and bringing a toddler with you.

Or, imagine sending your own child out, alone, to fetch unsafe water from a dirty pond. Picture them standing ankle deep in a stagnant pool, scooping up and then drinking the muddy water. Then consider that this water is guaranteed to make them sick with a life-threatening illness.

when things are most serious and in need of the most committed support. When an army is mobilised, it means that action is being taken and that the most professional, most dedicated and most able of bodies are moving in to assist a situation that is overwhelming its victims.

In fact, shockingly, a child dies every 20 seconds from a water related disease.

International water aid charity, Just a Drop, is launching its Mums Army campaign on Mother’s Day to support the plight of mums worldwide in their daily struggle to find water. It is the first time that a charity has specifically called on mums of the UK to unite with mothers in developing countries.

Mums united Wherever in the world they are, there is a deep understanding between mothers. She is the pivot on which the family revolves; a formidable force.

And an army is also a major force, mobilised at times

Just a Drop’s aim is to mobilise a Mums Army to inspire mums in the UK to rally together and raise funds and awareness to help mums in developing countries who do not have the luxury of having water on tap. There are various ways to get involved from being a ‘Troop Leader’, recruiting other mums in your local area to form a fundraising ‘brigade’, or becoming an individual ‘trooper’ and organising your own fundraising activities. Either way, by joining the ranks of Just a Drop’s Mums Army, you will be contributing to a national force for good, so please consider signing up today!

Mums Army will launch on Mother’s Day – the one day of the year that everyone celebrates their mum – and will run for one year, culminating on Mother’s Day 2016 when the campaign’s target to raise £250K will be announced.

Other causes are infected gums and repetitive motions such as chewing gum and grinding teeth at night time.

Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride-containing toothpaste – the two-minute rule just doesn’t cut it any more. Floss once a day and keep regular dental and hygiene appointments. Enquire about sealants and fluoride applications for the children. Minimise sugary diets and reduce snacks in between meals.

Act quickly – the minute something doesn’t feel right, get it checked out. All too often, people have a hunch that the pain will go away on its own and before you know it, you’re awoken

Cook's corner Spinach and Feta Frittata

2 tbsps extra virgin olive oil 8 large eggs 1 red onion, finely diced 6 vine tomatoes, diced 250g fresh spinach 100g feta cheese, crumbled Fine sea-salt and black pepper to season • Add 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil to large pan over medium high heat.

• Beat the eggs thoroughly and season with salt and pepper.

• Add the onion and tomatoes and cook 2 to 3 minutes until the onions are tender. Add the spinach and cook for another minute, or until the leaves begin to wilt.

• Pour eggs into the pan and stir with a wooden spoon. Cook 3 to 4 minutes, or until egg mixture has set on the bottom and begins to set on top.

Makes one 7 inch large tart or 10-12 individual sized tarts Chocolate fudge crust: • 1 cup pitted dates • 1 cup slivered almonds • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 2 tbsp cocoa Chocolate avocado pudding: • 4 avocados • 1/4 tsp salt • 1 tbsp vanilla extract • 1/4 cup plus 2 tbsp Agave (maple syrup or coconut sap – for a sugar-free version use liquid stevia to taste) • 1/3 cup natural cocoa • 1/2 cup (ca.100 g) melted dark chocolate To make the chocolate fudge crust: • Mix all crust ingredients in a food processor until dough-like consistency.Tip – if your dates are dry and the dough is not sticking together add 1-2 tbsp of water.

• Grease a muffin tin or spring-form pan with a natural oil.

• Distribute crust evenly into the muffin tin or spring-form pan pressing down.

To make the chocolate avocado pudding: • Melt dark chocolate and set aside to reach room temperature.

• Place all pudding ingredients in a food processor or blender and blend until smooth.

• Make sure to scrape down the sides occasionally. Tip – feel free to reduce the amount of chocolate if you are not indulging.

Pour pudding evenly on top of crust.

Place in the freezer and let set for min 4 hours.

Remove from freezer, top with fresh raspberries or strawberries and enjoy!

If a deposit is provided to your children to assist them in purchasing their home, or for the purposes of carrying out improvements, it will be made free of inheritance tax provided you do not die within 7 years of making the payment. However, if your child purchases, or already owns, their property with their partner or spouse, and they subsequently separate, what happens to your money and, if you are seeking for it to be returned to you, how do you avoid becoming embroiled in any litigation arising out of that separation?

Make sure that your intentions are clearly expressed to all parties before the monies are paid and that you fully understand the implications of your decision. For example, if it is your intention that the monies are a gift which you do not intend to be repaid, in the event of separation your contribution will be retained by them both, and shared in accordance with the way they own the property.

If it is your intention that the monies should be repaid at a later date, or in the event of separation, ensure that you have a Declaration of Trust or suitable Loan Agreement, drawn up by a solicitor before the purchase is completed, or the monies paid, clearly setting out the contribution you have made, the events that would give rise to the monies being returned to you and the terms of repayment.

Consider registering a legal charge over your child’s property similar to a mortgage to protect your interest, or even owning the property jointly with your child and their partner, or spouse, as tenants in common, until such time as the monies have been repaid.

If your child is proposing to cohabit with their partner, it would be advisable for them to consider entering into a cohabitation agreement; or if they are married, or anticipating marriage, a pre, or post nuptial agreement.

If the monies do come back to you it is equally important to seek advice from a solicitor at that stage as there are likely to be tax implications for you. You may also wish to consider some form of trust arrangement to provide extra protection.

While the above measures may appear to be rather extreme, it is important to bear in mind that informal, often casual agreements, between family members can be the most difficult to address in the event of separation. Taking steps to protect your contributions from the outset not only makes good financial sense, it can also protect relationships, leaving you to focus on what’s really important; family.

What an evening with Ol' Blue Eyes Frank Sinatra's 100th Birthday Gala Concert at the Rose Theatre

I

t’s hard to believe that Frank Sinatra would be one hundred years old this year.

His timelessly romantic tunes are still the choice for cool gatherings, stylish commercials, special social occasions and many a Valentine’s dinner too.

Sinatra is one of the best selling artists of all time recording over 1000 song titles and appearing in numerous films.

He was born in New Jersey to Sicilian immigrant parents; a high school drop-out who became a legend.

To honour his hundredth birthday, Rose Theatre in Kingston staged a fabulous Charity Gala in November raising funds for the locally-based charity, Princess Alice Hospice.

Frank Cognoscenti and his all-star band of some of the UK’s finest Jazz and Big Band musicians from the BBC Big Band, Syd Lawrence Orchestra and Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club got Kingston singing along and toe-tapping. The audience got into the swing of the brilliant band and couldn’t have enough of Frank's mesmerising voice. The experience was brilliantly close to the real thing opening with Come Fly With Me followed by Lady is a Tramp and, my favourite, I Got You Under My Skin which got the audience singing along. We were treated to so many of Sinatra’s finest songs such as Nancy, Ol’ Man River, Fly Me To The Moon, Second Time Around, My Funny Valentine, It Was A Very Good Year and the ever-cool Girl From Ipanema, to mention but a few.

The remarkable, physical likeness of Congnoscenti

to the forty-something Sinatra really brings the experience close to what I imagine it would have been with the maestro of smooth himself. Frank appeared as a Sinatra body double for a key holographic feature at Simon Cowell's 50th birthday party and more recently on the BBC’s The One Show.

Frank Cognoscenti has been a professional vocalist and songwriter for over twenty years and since 2002 has devoted his professional career to Sinatra’s work. Today he is regarded as one of the UK's most passionate defenders and the ‘definitive’ interpreter of the early 60s Sinatra sound.

efore revamping any space, take a moment to consider how you would like to change the ambience of the room or the way that it is used. This is especially important to consider when you are working on a tight budget.

To re-energise a space: consider purchasing a few accessories that will make a big impact. One way to lift a room and re-energise it is to introduce bright, bold colours. For example, consider purchasing a series of graphic prints and frame them simply or toss a colourful throw or scatter cushion on your sofa or armchair. If you would like to soften the space and create a relaxing ambience, diffusers and candles work very well. For bathrooms: it is never ideal to open the door straight onto a toilet. Try not to design a room in isolation from the rest of the house: rooms should flow seamlessly into one another, with colour schemes that are complementary and follow a similar style. T

he beginning of 2015 has started well for the lettings market, with the majority of flats on the market being let at their advertised price. However, 2015 sees a tightening of belts on the sales front. The market seems to have shifted from being a sellers’ mecca in 2013/2014 to a buyers’ heaven in 2015.

While the lettings market is seasonal and the price is driven by local amenities, it’s also down to the landlord to be realistic.

Even if you don’t have the Thames or a station on your doorstep, a well presented flat should not be on the market for any longer than a week.

Since opening our Kingston Hub we have noticed that one and two bedroom flats are a hot commodity and are much sought after by young professionals either working in Kingston or commuting

into Central London. January was an extremely busy month for lettings and we expect this to continue right into the summer as the rush of first time buyers has eased due to last year’s new lending rules. We expect the first quarter of 2015 to be strong for the lettings market in Kingston followed by a better market to buy or sell in after May’s general election.

SPRING is just around the corner

T

here is no more welcome sight at the end of those cold and wet days of winter than to see the tiny tips of snowdrop leaves poking through the soil.

Snowdrops can arrive looking in perfect condition because their leaf tips are specially strengthened – they literally bore their way through frozen soil.

Daffodils

Dying leaves

Although some varieties of daffodils are early flowerers, others may wait until well into April to show their faces. Like all spring bulbs, these should have been planted in the garden last autumn. But if you missed that particular boat, worry not: why not go to your favourite garden centre, buy up some miniature

It is extremely important for daffodil leaves to be allowed to die off naturally, as this is nature’s way of replenishing the store cupboard for the following year’s floral performance.

Removing the dead flowers is OK, but each plant will need at least 4 weeks for their leaves to wither, and then you can cut them off at ground level. You may see some gardeners valiantly tying their daffodil leaves into neat bundles; this is also a dreadful thing to do as it garrottes the supply of food, and you may as well have used the scissors in the first place!

Feeding

If you think that you are getting fewer flowers than last year, then it’s time to think about thinning out the over-crowded clumps. Unlike most other bulbs, snowdrops can be lifted when they are still in full leaf.

Bulbs that are to stay in the ground from year to year can be given a feed, and the critical time for doing this is between the time when the flowers first appear and when all the leaves are brown.

Any later than this and your efforts will be wasted.

Woman seeks male: Good sense of grooming a must

B

rowsing the latest online photos, I find myself looking at a handsome male.

Ripped torso, and a gleam in his eye that’s irresistibly mischievous. I study his profile: “Loves freedom” and “being the centre of attention.” Yep, gorgeous as he is, I know he’d give me the complete run-around.

Pass.

The next one is less threatening; huge, brown eyes, soft and gentle. Definitely easier to handle, but, knowing this type, the chances are he’d be slobbering all over me in seconds.

Valentine’s Day approaches and I am forced to admit finding the perfect match is as challenging as ever. Even if you’re willing to settle for a total dog!

To explain, I’m perusing the latest pooches on BorrowMyDoggy.com. The concept sounds barking, but is actually brilliant. Dog owners with time issues lend out their pets to dog lovers with commitment issues. For borrowers, this

means the option to have a relationship totally on your own terms – one where you can gorge on unconditional love, parade the chosen one as yours… then not call for days on end and shamelessly be seen walking out with another.

I sign up and ping a request to meet a Kingston member with four longhaired mongrels.

Worried a profile picture of me cuddling my cats would alienate any self-respecting dog, I also stick up a picture of my daughter stroking a pony to infer a family lurrrve of animals.

Thankfully, it worked, because they turned out to be gorgeous tumbling balls of fur that occasional legs stick out of... Walking all of them at one time is a hysterical challenge. As the leads fan out, and they pull, it’s like a cross between husky dog sledding and gladiator chariot racing.

I’ve happily frolicked with them a few times now, but I find my eye straying to a Pomeranian puppy. However, my messages have so far been ignored. This feels so much like online dating, I suspect that, should we ever meet, the puppy will turn out to be a Doberman.

Still, as I note the number of girlfriends whose partners and husbands are simply too busy to pay them attention, I’m hit with a tsunami-size, billionaire.com brainwave.
