The lady loves Kingston Elaine Miller invites locals to fall in love with their town

D

arling editor MarjaLeena Toseland discovers Elaine Miller's journey from Walton on Thames, where she was born, to her current passion of running Love Kingston and why she loves Kingston so much that she’s either lived or worked here most of her life. “We’re incredibly lucky to live in such a lovely part of the world” says Elaine. There’s a constant buzz, always something to do and having a great variety of shopping on the doorstep is a great bonus. I adore the green open spaces with the Thames running through and the stunning waterfront tow paths bring back fond memories of my years of competitive rowing. We’re a really active family and, with a South African as a husband, rugby and cricket have become a family affair. Finally succumbing to years of the children's pestering, we now have the most gorgeous Labrador puppy, Harley, who ensures we’re out every day exploring new places.”

What’s made you dedicate your professional life to helping others? “I appreciate that many have more harrowing stories to tell but, as a child, I thought that life was tough. My parents 4

Elaine with husband Andy and sons Jamie (13) and Chad (12)

separated when I was 8 and their relationship hit rock bottom. I remember an almost daily routine of shouting, screaming, fists flying and the police arriving.” My brother, sister and I moved away with our mother and all seemed quiet for a while. Yet with the pressure, and a huge sense of loneliness, alcohol took advantage of my only parent. It consumed everything – money, love and a safe environment every child should take for granted. This had a lasting effect on me and my siblings. We know what it is like to be hungry and live in poverty in the UK. I can remember times when I couldn’t

go to school because I didn’t have any shoes to wear and I laugh now when I recall hanging out the tea bags on the washing line to dry. Almost all of my childhood memories seemed to go from bad to worse and living from pillar to post, before finally spending my teenage years in children’s homes. My mother died some time ago and, sadly, alcohol abuse also claimed my younger brother. He was only 36. Finally my luck changed! I was determined to break the mould and achieve something. I studied hard and had great mentors. My lifelong friend, Dr Amir

told me ‘you are the product of people you surround yourself with’. I love that phrase. After a successful media career working in radio for Kiss 100, Xfm, and as an Entertainment Manager at Capital Radio, I turned my hand to fundraising, not only because I had transferrable skills and it fitted in with being a mum, but because I never forget the past. Now I’m in a position to help, in some small way, people who are seeking a better life.”

Can you tell us how Love Kingston started and what are your ambitions for it now? “Through a mum at the school gates I heard that The London Community Foundation and Kingston Voluntary Action were looking for an experienced fundraiser to set up a local fundraising initiative that could respond over time to changing needs in the community. The brief was exciting. Half of the donations would support five local projects working on ‘pathways out of poverty’, tackling issues such as debt, youth engagement, crime prevention, homelessness, domestic violence and hunger. The other half of donations would form a Kingston Legacy Fund – with 50% match funding from the Government Community First Programme, to provide sustainable giving in grants for more local projects.

After some weeks of research, speaking to local residents, businesses and the press, I quickly realised that we were onto something special. The enthusiasm and willingness of everyone to get involved was overwhelming.

“I can remember times when I couldn’t go to school because I didn’t have any shoes to wear.”

We launched on 4th October 2012 with Edward Bentall and Shiraz Mirza as Founding Patrons. Community support ranges from running marathons, cycling, dragon boat racing and rowing with activities culminating each year in Love Kingston Day on 14th February – where local people are invited to ‘Fall in Love with their town’ and have fun fundraising for Love Kingston.

Ambassadors who bring a wealth of passion and skills. Thousands of caring residents and businesses have collectively raised over £250,000 so far.

The campaign continues to gather pace with new Patrons, businessman Paul Cox and Edward Davey MP and ten

It’s easy to see why Love Kingston has captured the imagination of local people. It is the only borough-wide philanthropic platform that makes it simple to donate to a diverse range of causes within our local community. Our ambition is that thousands of residents left on the margins of our beautiful borough are not forgotten.”

Morzine

The ski resort that ticks all the boxes!

A

s Morgan Jupe approach their third winter season in Morzine, they reflect on why and how they’ve grown to love this gem of a ski town so much. Jess: Before we started our business, I knew Morzine from happy family holidays. From the moment Josh and I arrived to prepare for our first season we were instantly charmed by the authentic atmosphere and the more than helpful local people. It was such a pleasure to be made to feel at home almost immediately. Morzine is situated at the heart of the Portes du Soleil, an area with over 650km of pistes making it one of the largest ski areas in the world. Whilst other European resorts have become increasingly expensive in recent years, Morzine has remained affordable and has kept its unpretentious, Savoyard appeal. Many Brits have decided that it’s such a fantastic place to call home they’ve built and renovated properties out there, bringing another dimension to the local community. However the majority of restaurants and bars remain French-owned, which helps Morzine retain its traditional character. Josh: Morzine has plenty to offer not only in the way of fantastic, varied skiing but also for glorious

mountain lunches and lively après ski. We have great relationships with the restaurant and bar owners in the centre of town and our guests are always thrilled with their experiences in our favourite spots: L’Etale, Le Vaffieu and The Tibetan Café, to name a few. With easy access to Avoriaz, Châtel and the Swiss resorts there is something for everyone to enjoy. Morzine-Les Gets is an intermediate skier's paradise with endless forests and cruising blue runs. The rest of the Portes du Soleil offers more varied skiing, with steeper runs and plenty of off-piste areas for adventurous types. Some people place an overemphasis on a connection between low altitude resorts and poor snow fall. Not in the Portes du Soleil! Avoriaz receives an average 8m of fresh powder per season, which is the third highest record in Europe; no other French resort comes close! The crowning accolade is Morzine’s unrivalled convenience. The proximity to Geneva means airport transfers are just over an hour, making this unspoilt dreamworld the perfect retreat for short breaks and for families with young children. Fantasy jewels

R

Frustrated by the uniformity of high-street jewellery, Rosita Heshmati’s discoveries inspired her to set up an online designer boutique

osita’s craving for quality and expressive unique designs for everyday wear and special occasions led to her buying jewellery directly from small designers during frequent trips to southern Europe. “I soon had a jewellery box full of these wonderful creations and became the envy of my friends who started asking me to choose items for them, whenever business or pleasure took me back to this beautiful part of the world. Nothing

makes me happier than scouring the small streets of Venice or Istanbul for undiscovered creative gems.” The realisation that many other women desire the same thing – jewellery that sets them apart with its originality and finesse that comes from centuries of traditional jewellerymaking, combined

with a Mediterranean lyrical expressionism – prompted her to explore showcasing her collections and so Expressions des Bijoux was born. “My mission is simple – to give women access to stunning jewellery, reflecting a variety of tastes and styles from refined simplicity to luxurious drama.” ExpressionsDesBijoux.com. Kingston's artists go places KAOS takes 'Art in transit' exhibition to Kingston's twin in Germany by Artist Hanna ten Doornkaat

A

t the end of September, eleven artists were absolutely delighted, immensely proud and even 'haben sich wahnsinnig gefreut' (tickled pink) to find themselves in the BBK gallery, Oldenburg in Germany, for the private view of their exhibition ‘art in transit’. A whole delegation from Kingston Council, headed by the Leader, Councillor Kevin Davis, Brigitte Pfender Commissioning Manager International Cooperation and

Lao-tzu (as I’m sure you all know) said ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’. Well, KAOS artists didn't have to travel nearly that far but it was a struggle nevertheless and, with little money available, the logistical problems seemed insurmountable. One of the major obstacles was the expense of transporting the artworks of thirteen people and that is how the idea for ‘art in transit’ came about. All the works submitted had to fit into Ryanair exhibition will run in the upstairs gallery in Kingston museum from 12 December to 17 January with a private view on 11 December.

Partnership in Kingston, and the dean of Kingston University had also travelled to Kingston’s twin town.

cabin allowance bags. The BBK artists have only to make sure that their works fit into the car being driven here by two of their artists.

Back in 2012 two artists, one from Kingston and one from Oldenburg, came up with the ambitious idea of two exhibitions. One of Kingston artists exhibiting in Oldenburg with a return exhibition in Kingston for the artists of BBK Oldenburg.

KAOS members are now very much looking forward to their chance to repay some of the wonderfully generous hospitality they all received in Germany, when the BBK artists come to Kingston for their return exhibition ‘Northern Attitudes’. This

In the meantime, from 25 October, members of KAOS will feature rolling exhibitions, they will change every 2 months, at Jax Caffe and at various other venues in Old London Road. Their aim is to ‘fill Old London Road with art, artists and art lovers’. I’m pretty sure that they want to fill the rest of Kingston as well. More information on Facebook: Art at caffee J A X

emember that childhood taunt “If you stay there long enough, your face will stay like that!” It’s the same with our bodies. If we don’t move them we will stiffen and age. Most of us feel the need to move more but few of us find the thing that really gets us going. Could Ballroom and Latin dancing be for you? No longer the exclusive domain of the blue rinse brigade and precocious children, Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday nights has rekindled our interest to an extent no one would’ve thought possible. Low impact aerobic activity improves your cardiovascular system, tones your muscles, burns calories

and aids greater flexibility, all the while encouraging good posture and body alignment. And, if that’s not enough, it gets you out and gets you socialising. Dancing helps spur creativity, motivation and overall energy. Research has shown that ballroom dancing improves mental acuity and can even help prevent Alzheimer’s disease in older people. We can’t all trip the light fantastic with Thom Evans on a Saturday night but we can learn the moves, master the steps and dance our way to fitness. Samantha Tedeschi and Jesús Ortiz offer classes from beginners up. www.dancecraze.biz

Christmas in a tea shop

G

rowing up in a family tea shop I knew that Christmas was coming when my father, Peter, started baking big batches of Christmas cakes, mince pies and other festive goodies. Christmas was the busiest time of year at Peter’s in Weybridge – the tea shop my parents ran from 1958 to 2000. I can picture Dad pulling a tray of ten fruit cakes out of the oven, the scent of Christmas filling the air. The bakehouse overflowed with mince pies, chocolate yule logs and Christmas biscuits.

Aside from being a baker Dad was also a chocolatier. My mother, Frankie, the welcoming face of the tea shop, presented Dad’s chocolates and petit fours to customers in gold boxes tied with red ribbon. My favourites were chocolate peppermint creams which Dad made for me every Christmas. My three siblings (Gordon, Johnny, Georgina) and I all helped out. Johnny decorated the Christmas biscuits. I filled the pastry cases with mincemeat and dipped Florentines in chocolate. I recreated the Christmas recipes with Dad as I wrote my book, The Baker’s Daughter. Sadly, Dad died in 2012, but the recipes live on for all to enjoy. For more information visit: www.louisejohncox.com

food and drink

.................

A guide to a white, red and sparkling Christmas! by Céline de Andria from the French Connoisseur

W

hen it comes to wine and food pairing, I believe that the best choice is always your own personal taste. Of course, there are some pairing rules but what is the point in recommending a powerful red if all you enjoy drinking is a light and fruity one? If you do want some guidance however, here are my personal picks from a couple of local retailers.

Christmas – For a glass of light and delicate Champagne which will not alter your taste buds before your festive meal, try Autréau Brut Blanc de Blancs1. To accompany your traditional Christmas roast turkey and trimmings, I recommend the rich and smooth Saint Aubin (2011)2 as your white and the velvety-like and wonderfully complex

Bergerac Rouge AOC L’Audace (2011)3 as your red. New Year’s Eve – You may spend the whole evening drinking champagne so choose a well-balanced champagne such as Alain Bernard Tradition Brut3, perfect on its own or with simple but classy party food. As for still wines, I would select lighter and highly refreshing ones. I suggest a Picpoul de Pinet (2013)2 for a white or a Beaujolais Fleurie (2012)1 for a red. 1

What’s up in social media?

T

eenagers are spending an ever-increasing amount of time on social media sites to interact with their friends, post pictures and stalk people. However do you really know what social media sites your daughter/son uses most?

33

by Darling Intern Elizabeth Plumb

I recommend getting onto Facebook with 94% of all teenagers having a Facebook ‘profile’, or Instagram with 83% of teenagers having a ‘profile’.These would be the best apps to download to keep an eye on your child…if they accept your friend/follow request, that is.

With 71% of all teenagers having social media sites downloaded to their phones, there is no wonder why they are on their phones all the time! From when teenagers first wake up 55% of them go straight to their phone to check how many ‘likes’ they have for their Facebook profile picture. However, now that 40-65 year olds see their children on social media sites, they feel it is only right to download some for themselves. But if they download WhatsApp, with only 26% of teenagers actively using it, they have downloaded the least popular social media app they could find – LOL! darlingmagazine.co.uk | nov 2014 – jan 2015

It is a front white light, required by law for all cyclists, but in addition, it also has a laser, which projects the symbol of a bike down onto the road in front of the rider. A bright green symbol of a bike travels ahead of the cyclist in traffic, warning other road users of its presence, preventing them turning across its path. Visit www.blaze.cc for more info.

new will is perhaps not the first thing that comes to mind when dealing with a family separation, but in view of the new intestacy rules coming into force on 1 October 2014, if you don’t already have one, it really should be. Even if you have a will, you should review it. For those couples who do not have children, if you die without a will and before the divorce has concluded with the Decree Absolute being pronounced, all of your assets will pass immediately to your (now estranged) spouse. This is a significant change from the old rules under which your other family members could also benefit from your estate. Arguably the biggest change will be felt by those couples who do have children. Under the old intestacy rules, if you died without a will and before the Decree Absolute had been pronounced, only the first £250,000 of your estate, together with your personal belongings, would pass directly to your spouse. The remaining estate would then be divided 50% into a trust for your spouse and 50% to your children, providing some peace of mind that your children would benefit from your assets

both on your death and then on your spouse’s death. This is no longer the case. With the dawn of the new rules, as of 1 October 2014, if you do not have a will and you die before the Decree Absolute has been pronounced, the half share that would have been held in trust for your spouse will now pass to him or her outright to do with as they wish. Food for thought indeed; particularly if your children are young and you wish to provide them with assets, or income, when they grow up. The solution is simple. If you do not yet have a will, you need one. If you have minor children, this will also allow you to set out who you wish to be their guardian, or guardians, in the event of your and/or your spouse’s deaths, and who you wish to be responsible for administering your estate. If you already have a will does it provide for everything to pass to your spouse? Is that what you still want? This is not the only practical matter you should consider upon separation. If you own property

Chris Thurlow

with your spouse as joint tenants, upon your death they will own the entire property. Consideration should therefore be given to applying to the Land Registry to sever the joint tenancy so that you each own the property in two very distinct shares. This is known as tenants in common. Once you have done so, upon your death, your share in the property will form part of your estate and will therefore be distributed in accordance with the terms of your will, assuming that you have made one. At Hart Brown we have specialist lawyers who will be able to assist you with any queries you may have about wills and estates and/or family matters. We look forward to hearing from you. For enquiries about wills and estates, please contact Chris Thurlow on: wills@hartbrown.co.uk or by telephone on 020 8947 8171. The Season of pleasure

...or PRESSURE?

ots of parties, special events, food and drinks galore, commitments, deadlines – the 25th is just one of them, expectations and celebrations. Fabulous isn’t it? Yes, if your mind doesn’t nag you to deliver the right presents, the right food, the right dress, the right weight, the right mood, the right planning and all under your perfect control. In other words, demanding the impossible.

that pumps up your stress levels and sets you up for failure. Every time you fail to meet your expectations you let yourself down and create disappointment undermining your confidence.

It is an easy trap to fall into as we are bombarded with picture purrrrrfect; on telly, billboards and films about this lovely, peaceful time of the year.

Happy relaxed season!

Trying always to do the right thing is a form of perfectionism. Being perfect is an unrealistic illusion

For a more enjoyable time this season, check out where your expectations could be lowered and put that into practice. Try to step out of your selfinflicted stress cycle and go with the flow.

Winter Warmers

......................

Want the ‘hot-house’ effect?

W

ith the cost of energy increasing continuously, what better time to warm up your winter and reduce those bills at the same time? Look to extend or renovate, and reap the rewards. By adding a loft conversion you can certainly increase the insulation to your home. Building regulations over the past few years have become really stringent with regard to insulating lofts. The U-value (measure of heat loss) that needs to be achieved is very low in order to get your building control sign-off. With a wellinsulated loft, the rising heat can’t escape. The result is a warm, cosy home without the expense of wasted heating. And in the depths of winter, you’ll find that yours is the only house in the road where the snow doesn’t melt on the roof – proof that you’re getting the most out of your energy bills. Double glazing is also very beneficial to any home. It keeps the heat in and the cold out. Haven Construction works in partnership with Grabex Windows, who produce top quality, double-glazed wooden,

UPVC and aluminium windows, as well as doors at very affordable prices. Once installed you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it years ago.

‘Keep the heat in and the cold out’ Rear extensions can warm up your home as well. New floors are insulated, the walls are of insulated cavity wall construction, and the roof is required to be fully insulated as well. Rear doors and windows are all double glazed, as are roof windows.

The thought of a cold house this winter should no longer be a concern. These are just three of the ways you could significantly warm up your home. For you it means a warmer winter and your bills are not as high – so a win-win situation! And to top it off you’ll have more space to enjoy the warmth in.

Accessing solutions

W

e are often asked about “difficult deliveries”, “tricky access” and “funny shaped spaces”. Many customers believe their entrance restricts the size of possible seating, regardless of how large the actual room is. Here are some ideas to help you better understand what may be possible. Customised modular/ sectional seating These are good options for most, as the modules may be purchased in a variety of shapes and sizes, and may be bracketed together in situ. Modules tend to be compact enough to go through the tightest of access points and are therefore ideal solutions for basements and attic rooms. A tip - if access is really challenging to work with, buy several smaller modules to bracket together instead of larger sections. This may be a bit more expensive but at least you know you’ll get the furniture in (and out again). Bolt on arms/bolt in two frame These are the most cost effective solution for many people selecting a sofa, as taking the arms off for delivery and bolting them on in situ allows the piece to be manoeuvred through narrow spaces. An alternative may be to purchase your sofa in two (or more) sections to be bolted together on arrival. It may be necessary to combine this solution with bolt on arms, where the access is particularly tricky (like going down the hatch of a house boat!).

Split frame Occasionally customers desiring a large, deep sofa order the frame split in two. This approach allows the delivery team to get the piece into the room where ceiling height and other obstacles would otherwise prevent them doing so. Bespoking Finally, there is nothing to stop you ordering a piece that’s made uniquely for you, assuming you know exactly what you want – in terms of seat comfort as well as style and size(s). To purchase a quality, handcrafted piece is generally more affordable than people expect. If you’re looking for affordable, quality upholstery, with plenty of choice, Seriously Sofas will be delighted to offer you expert advice and assistance. Ooh, the scent of a real Christmas tree!

T

he perennial question in our house is not merely ‘where will we put the tree this year?’ but more like ‘where will our fully lit tree complete with dangly tinsel balls of all sizes and colours be safe from the night-time marauding antics of two fully grown moggies?’ While I am vexing over this, here are some handy hints on getting the best out of your real tree. Most of the cut plants that are being sold locally will have made quite a journey already. Here’s a quick way that you can test the freshness of your choice. Hold the tree about 10 cm above the ground, and drop it onto its cut end. A less energetic way would be to run a branch through your hand. Either way, if the tree is in good condition, then you should not expect to see many needles dropping off. Before even thinking of decorating it, saw about one cm off the bottom of the stem. As quickly as you can, plunge this cut end of the stem into a bucket of water and allow the tree to stand like that in a cool place for about 24 hours. This will allow the plant to re-hydrate, and will go some way to slowing down the inevitable needle drop. Sad to say, there is no such thing

as a non-needle-drop tree – except an artificial one!

the hotter the room, the more it will drink.

If you have a custom-made tree stand with an integrated water reservoir, check it for leaks. Having filled it up with water on the Christmas tree’s first day, don’t forget to check this level regularly. It’s important that the cut end of the stem constantly remains below the water level otherwise the tree will stop drinking, and then rapidly dry out.

Before you buy what you think is a Christmas tree in a pot, with roots, do check it's what it says on the tin. Some cheeky traders simply stick the cut end of a tree into a pot filled with soil – it could take a week or two before you discover the awful truth!

Hard to believe, but a cut tree can imbibe from 0.5 litres to nearly 4 litres a day. Obviously

Not many pairs reached 7NT but, as Grand Slams go, it is not so hard. Over South’s game-forcing 2♣ opener, North’s 3♦ is a positive response, promising a 5-card suit or longer headed by two of the top three honours. When South rebids 3♠ and North rebids 4♦, this must show a 6-card suit. South counts 8 tricks outside of diamonds and 6 diamond tricks, making enough for the Grand Slam. In fact, the spades misbehave but North has a seventh diamond so 13 tricks are easy. Raising money for wonderful charities has never been so much fun. nightofthestars.org.uk aceoftrumps.com

'Twas the Diet before Christmas By Lyndsay Russell

R

ecently, a toned, ultra-fit friend shoved a book called Eat Right For Your Blood Type in my hand and made me take a pledge to try the O diet. I agreed, because some mornings all my joints ached and she insisted this showed a bad intolerance to something. It’s now day 12, and I know what that is – her. In my eyes, the ‘O’ diet stands for “Oh NO,” uttered every time I checked what else I couldn’t eat. “You’ll soon feel fabulous,” crowed my healthy mate, emanating a glow so wondrous, it could eclipse The Angel Gabriel’s. Goody for her, all smug and satiated in her bloody group AB. If I now resemble an abused greyhound, it’s because the sustenance allowed in my group is in single digits - including water. She will accuse me of greatly exaggerating, but when you’re told you can’t eat potatoes, cheese, biscuits, cake or bread, it only takes days to lose your sanity. Even

stuff I believed good for me is a no-no. Bye-bye avocados, melons, strawberries, etc. etc. etc. and etc! ‘How do you feel now?’ she asked, checking daily. ‘Ready to slaughter every human being in group AB,’ I answered, uncharitably. Worse, Christmas is a-coming, and it’s the party season. Canapés of dry Ryvita, anyone? “Bah, Humbug” to that. Eat my words? Am I even allowed…? So in rebellion, I’m sitting in the Canbury Arms, sipping a latte – my cup runneth over with milk from a cow’s udder, and I have broken my gluten free, wheat free, dairy free, joy free diet. I contemplate leaving ‘my people’ – the sad-looking waifs haunting the Gluten Free supermarket shelves, forced to buy vile ‘Oat Only’ brands that even a Trojan Horse would hack up. Meanwhile, the ‘Special’ Milk section has many needs. The classic Soya has less appeal than a tofu kelp sandwich, but trying to find an alternative to cow’s that doesn’t turn my tea into trough water, is making me go nuts. I’ve now tried Almond, Hazelnut, and Coconut milk. All foul. My thirst goes unquenched and I’m sprouting a fluffy tail. In desperation I’m ready to try a Kitty Milk carton from Pets At Home, but it says online they’ve sold out. Help! “Dear Santa, please get me a carton and stick it in (what will be by then) my limp, scrawny stocking…”
