At the Kingston Riverside Club we warmly welcome players of all standards and ages. Our newly upgraded facilities include covered, floodlit courts enabling play throughout the year, a modern clubhouse with a bar, showers and changing rooms and a private car park for our members.
We offer two different types of court surfaces: Macadam hard courts for faster play and clay courts which are softer, limiting impact on ankle, knee and hip joints. Why not pop in and see us – the entrance to the club is at the junction of Lower Ham Road and Lower Kings Road in Kingston.

Kingston is preparing for a busy summer of culture. I’m looking forward to wonderful art in the Kingston Artists Open Studios (KAOS) weekends in June. Over 100 artists will be opening their studios to visitors. Ignition Dance Festival is not to be missed either and July brings even more new talent to town with the International Youth Arts Festival - IYAF, with hundreds of brilliant performances to see, and easily done with festival passes for the whole family! Our Inspiring Women - yes we’ve got two this time, Janie Harland and Peg Morris, are real movers and shakers on the local art scene. The beautiful cover and article photos were shot at the stunning Dorich House Museum in Kingston Vale which is Sculptor Dora Gordine’s former studio home and now owned by Kingston University and is open to visitors. We’ve also hunted down some of the best cafés for you, whether you want a perfect latte or espresso, the freshest juice or traditional afternoon tea in a vintage setting. Don’t miss our regular columns from Dr De-Stress, chartered horticulturist Valerie McBride-Munro and Lyndsay Russell who's overcome her phobia of spiders. Hope you enjoy the read! Until September…

Artists Peg Morris and Janie Harland
B
oth Janie Harland and Peg Morris are professional artists, and also share another side of their professional lives as women behind organisations supporting artists and small creative enterprises. Our editor caught up with the duo before Kingston's busy summer of art events kicks off with the Open Studios weekends in June. 6
Janie founded FusionARTS in 2004 and Peg set up KAOS in 2010 – Kingston Artists Open Studios – together with ceramicist Cressida Borrett.
Peg, what was your motivation for setting up KAOS? ‘When I had my garden studio built in 2010 I was keen to take part in an Open Studios event
SUMMER 2017 darlingmagazine.co.uk
but Kingston, unlike most other local councils, did not organise open studios so Cressida and I decided to do something about it. By working with other local artists we have grown from two to our current membership of 85 and rising. This June there will be over 90 artists taking part in our Kingston Artists Open Studios event which I consider to be a real achievement in just seven years.’
inspiring women Can you tell us about your work and how did you get started as an artist? ‘I have always made art. Since childhood, drawing and painting, and for the last 20 years, printmaking, have been an essential part of my life. I completed a degree in Fine Art (Painting) in 1988 and have subsequently specialised in printmaking and painting. I now work from my studio at home and also from Kew Studio where I am the Print Technician and Etching Tutor. I exhibit with several groups and galleries and also at art fairs, most recently the Brighton Art Fair last September.’
Peg Morris in her home studio
What challenges have been your biggest in your quest to becoming a full-time artist?
What are your three favourite things about Kingston?
‘It is very difficult to succeed as a full-time artist and like so many other artists, I have juggled teaching and family commitments with working and exhibiting my work for many years. I have recently moved from teaching in schools to teaching printmaking to adults. I have had to be very disciplined about my studio time in order to keep producing new work.’
‘The river, being next to Richmond Park and the proximity to both central London for world class galleries and the open countryside for inspiration.’
What advice would you give to those creatives who want to make art their professional future? ‘Finding a suitable workspace is always a challenge. Make the work which you are inspired to make rather than what you think will sell. It’s lovely to be in the studio but it is also vital to promote and show your work, especially now that social media is such a fundamental aspect of modern life.’
Janie can you tell us what FusionARTS is all about, and what led you to setting it up?
creative, in a business sense. The building was much larger than I had planned for and initially I thought it pointless even looking at it. But you know what it’s like with property - the hopeless cases inevitably seem to fire up the imagination, and the next minute you’re planning where the furniture will go. So it was with 53 Eden Street too. Once I’d imagined it, it was going to happen.’
‘FusionARTS is a complex of creative workspaces situated in the heart of Kingston. The motivation to setting it up came from the fact that, at that time in 2004, there was no provision for artists in the borough, and I had nowhere to work!
FusionARTS are having to relocate due to redevelopment of the building where you are now in central Kingston. What does the future look like for you as a group?
Initially, I approached the council, and while we managed to create a good relationship which led to locating our existing town centre building, there was no question of it being funded by the borough. So in order to take on the four floor office block, I had to be quite
‘Perversely, after the initial dismay faced with the changes in the next couple of years, there is now a huge amount of positive anticipation. Our current thinking for the future would not have come about without a bit of a kick up the backside. We are working on some exciting plans, not only

PERFECT CAFÉ
On the hunt for a
By Holly Lavelle
The French Tarte, 83 High Street, Teddington This café offers a relaxing and cosy atmosphere with their small marble tables and light radio. Have your coffee brought to you under the sun in their wonderful outside seating area. From almond croissants to croque monsieur, you definitely won’t go hungry!
The Fallow Deer, 130 High Street, Teddington A quirky coffee shop that’s always bustling with their vibrant atmosphere and shabby chic décor. The outside courtyard, with its fairy lights and rustic wooden tables, is almost as charming as the staff.
Beanberry Coffee Company, 39b Fife Street, Kingston Minimalist and spacious with an industrial vibe. This trendy coffee bar will leave you wanting seconds of their smiley staff and superb flat whites. Dimly lit to set the mood for a real artisan coffee!
Fratelli’s Delicatessen, 57 Park Road, Kingston I feel as if I’ve arrived in Italy. The café and deli is a firm favourite with the locals in North Kingston, who pop in for a proper Italian espresso (gets my vote!) or a foamy cappuccino in the morning, a quick bite to eat at lunch time or to pick up Italian cheese, parma ham or a bottle of finest Italian wine from the deli. Left: Owners Antionetta and Antonio Mensano with a freshly prepared, delicious bruschetta.
The Market House Tea Room, The Market Place, Kingston A vintage lover’s paradise serving fabulous homemade cakes, cream teas and sandwiches. Their crockery is all beautiful vintage wear and the upstairs tea room is a lovely wood-panelled escape from the hustle and bustle of the market.

Beans and Greens, 29 Castle Street, Kingston Sit back and relax in this fun and friendly haunt. Spacious and bright, the atmosphere is as fresh as the juice. Enjoy your drink in, or stay on the go! (Try their mango smoothie for an extra kick).
Wags N Tails Coffee, 7-9 Brighton Road, Surbiton A tucked away gem just off Surbiton high street. Spacious and comfortable, enjoy your delicious food and drink any time of day with the whole family. The décor is retro whilst contemporary with its colourful road signs, vintage lettering and high top tables.
inspiring women What advice would you give to someone who is at the start of their professional life as an artist? ‘The strange truth is that it isn't necessarily the most talented people that are the most successful. Success comes generally to those putting as much effort into promoting their work as they do to creating it. It seems simplistic to say it, but the public don’t know you exist unless you tell them. So spend 30% of your time on self promotion - and the rest being creative.’

Janie Harland in her office for those at FusionARTS, but encompassing the wider creative community and the public.
What are your favourite three things about Kingston? ‘Riverside life, the ancient market place and FusionARTS of ocurse.’ fusionarts.org kingstonartistsopenstudios.co.uk pegmorris.com
We have been providing affordable workspaces for Kingston creatives for 13 years and we intend to stay as a group.’
What led you to becoming an artist and what have your challenges been in pursuing a career as a creative professional? ‘I was one of those children that drew all the time. I had no plan what I would do with that skill other than to head to art school which taught me that there are many talented artists out there and I had to knuckle down if I was to make a career out of it. So I did a four year Graphic Design degree with a year spent in industry. I was lucky enough to win a placement at J. Walter Thomson advertising agency. It quite literally changed my career direction overnight. I became an Art Director and created campaigns for print, radio and TV. It was a fantastic experience in a very competitive industry. I met so many talented people who inspired me. After my son was born I retrained in interior design, and started to draw and paint again. This seemed to bring me a full circle, being creative for myself once more rather than a client, and strangely, it was much more challenging!’

What is the state of your colon? Asks Rian Torres from Health Etcetera
E
very day our food ends up in our colon where it often gets stuck against the colon’s wall. Did you know that impacted faeces forms a dirty crust, which is the root cause of many health problems? Regularly cleansing our colon helps with a myriad of issues, both physical and emotional. Everyone should cleanse their colon once in a while if they are healthy. If you have health issues, a series of treatments is recommended. Scientists are now proving in the lab that your health starts in your colon. Whatever health condition you suffer from, a colonic cleanse will help you in some way.
16
Unfortunately, most clinics’ expensive rates mean that only the wealthy have access to this ancient treatment. Rian is set to change all that and offers treatments at a very reasonable rate. ‘I would like to educate people about the benefits of colonic irrigation in a safe and quiet environment’, says Rian. She sees clients at her retreat in Coombe Hill. T: 07963 692441 healthetcetera.com

Q: The moment my husband and I start discussing summer holidays, we end up arguing. He wants to go to a sunny place and lie by the pool. I love to go to the mountains and be active. Each year our holiday is a stressful experience, as I don’t enjoy the heat and end up spending time in the gym or in my room while he is outside or we go for a hike and he is moaning at me all the time. Instead of having fun, we just create stress for each other. How can we have a great holiday together? Emily A: Dear Emily, happy relationships are partly about negotiating differences and that is clearly the case in your relationship when it comes to holidays. You have tried to accommodate each other but that hasn’t worked. I would suggest that you won’t even contemplate a sunny or a mountain holiday together anymore.
Your interests are too wide apart to make a compromise work. Let me take you back a step and ask the question what you want from a holiday, regardless of the destination: do you want to recharge your batteries, broadening your horizon or reconnect in your relationship? And what is your husband’s aim? Knowing what you both want will define the next step. So, if recharging is the aim for both of you through sun or mountains, you each have to find a friend or a group to go with. However, if you are both keen to explore new things, you have a joint project and you could end up together on a cruise, a city-break or an alternative holiday focussed on painting or wine making. Discovering things together might open up a whole new dimension in your relationship and in your holidays! There are a lot more types of holiday than the mountains or the sun. Let me know where you end up this year.
Not sleeping well? Knots in your stomach? Worrying way more than you would like? Secretly, not feeling good enough? Not in control of your life? Too much work and not enough fun? These are all signs of different types of stress, which you can easily leave behind with the help of my effective tools and techniques. Want to stress less and live more? Dr Mariette Jansen offers a FREE clarity call, a one-hour stress check, an online meditation class and a range of coaching options. HOMECOMING for local agent Guy Leaning has returned to the area and opened the new office for Robert Holmes and Company on Coombe Lane, Wimbledon at the beginning of April.
G
uy first started working in the area in 1989 with Barnard Marcus before opening his own business as a partner of Lords in 1994 which was later rebranded as Palladian in New Malden. His knowledge and experience as a trusted advisor within the area is highly recognised and already attracting significant interest. Guy comments, “It is wonderful to be back and I have received such a warm welcome from previous and new clients in opening the office for Robert. I am very fond of this area and its history and am delighted to have such a wonderful opportunity to work alongside such an experienced group of people’’ He continues ‘’One of the first people that phoned the office searching for a new property was a client that I had sold a house to in 1989, we remembered each other well and he remarked what a clever move it was to open a new office and link the success we have achieved from Wimbledon Village to service Coombe in a much more thorough way.’’ Locals love the Coombe area for the wide-open spaces of
Richmond Park, good sized houses and gardens as well as being close to the Village. Perhaps the biggest draw for parents is the education: schools in New Malden and Coombe which are renowned for being some of the best in the borough of Kingston. Families move to the area from all over London in order to increase their chances of gaining a place for their children at one of the areas prime schools.
Robert Holmes & Company is a 40-year-old private company which has long been established as the number one residential property specialist within the area and prides itself on its extensive knowledge and experience of its staff. We look forward to welcoming you at our new office. Robert Holmes & Company, 360 Coombe Lane, Wimbledon. SW20 0RJ

Battle Of
The Brands
From knee-lengths to crop-tops, by local historian Richard Jones skimpy) designs appearing on the courts with each passing year. When tennis superstar Chris Evert signed with Italian sportswear label Ellesse in 1979 it was the start of a new era of women’s tennis fashion and a new type of relationship between athletes and big brands. Evert, who had already won two of her three Wimbledon singles titles by then, became a globe-trotting model and ambassador for a brand whose signature look combined bright colours with simple, functional designs. If you were lucky enough to be around during the years when Chris was playing, it is likely you still recall her as she looked throughout the 1980s, the last decade of her career, wearing a simple Ellesse skirt and vest combination. The Ellesse brand had been founded in 1959 “on a dream of creating the world’s most stylish sportswear brand.” This sort of marketing-speak is commonplace today, but back then sports apparel and footwear had been largely functional rather than fashionable, and clothing for woman players had either been of the simple two-piece shirt and shorts variety or bespoke dresses made by famous designers such as Jean Patou, who designed for Suzanne Lenglen, Coco Chanel and Teddy Tinling. The latter, incidentally, went on to design Chris Evert’s dress for her wedding to John Lloyd in 1979.

W
omen’s tennis fashion has come a long way from the wide-brimmed hats, long skirts and matronly aprons worn by the Wimbledon champions of the Victorian era. Starting with Suzanne Lenglen’s daring knee-length skirts and bare arms in the 1920s, tennis has become the launch-pad for fashion innovation, with new fabrics and ever-more practical (some would say

The first colour TV outside broadcast from Wimbledon in 1967 had triggered a worldwide tennis boom, and as millions of new fans switched onto the sport during the 1970s it became big business, particularly in the US. Even before Chris Evert had signed her contract with Ellesse she had had her own range of tennis clothing for eight years, designed by Puritan Fashions of New York. Ellesse was one of the first companies to signal the change towards sportswear becoming leisurewear, even for those who had never swung a tennis racquet in their life.

Serena Williams
During the 1980s and 90s, players became closely associated with the clothes they wore and the companies which made them. Martina Navratilova was the embodiment of the Puma brand, whilst German rival Adidas was synonymous with the power and athleticism of Steffi Graf. With Martina’s fantastic career drawing to a close, the company signed Serena Williams and the high-water mark in their relationship came when the younger of the Williams sisters attracted enormous publicity by wearing a figure-hugging black catsuit at the 2002 US Open. Sister Venus, meanwhile, wore Reebok apparel before creating her own “EleVen” brand in 2007. “The whole philosophy of EleVen is about overcoming adversity and triumphing over anything while looking fashionable doing it,” said the five-time Wimbledon singles champion.

Anna Kournikova
The modern professional tennis player is a supremely-fit athlete, and as far as clothing is concerned functionality now comes firmly ahead of appearance. One wonders what the early Wimbledon champions in their voluminous ankle-length skirts would have made of it all!
In the same year that Serena was stunning the New York crowds in her black catsuit, Russia’s Anna Kournikova was pictured at the Miami Open wearing an Adidas creation consisting of short shorts and a stretch bra. According to reports at the time (2002), “her sexy glamour did wonders for Adidas way beyond the tennis courts.” Since the year 2000, even the most glamorous tennis players have become little more than clothes-horses in the never-ending battle between the two superpowers of tennis apparel, Adidas and Nike. New ranges are produced for the Australian Open, French Open, US Open and Wimbledon Championships each year, many of which never reach high street sports stores.

Full STEAM ahead at Kingston Grammar School A digital future
Tim Benson, STEAM Coordinator at KGS
“
…digital and technology skills should be considered complementary to numeracy and literacy. Digital literacy is an essential tool that underpins other subjects and almost all jobs.” House of Lords Select Committee report on Digital Skills - Make or Break: The UK’s Digital future – Feb 2015 Digital making - the skills to build digital technology - is rapidly gaining momentum as an essential educational endeavour. Schools such as Kingston Grammar School aiming to revolutionise their STEAM curriculum. The moniker STEAM, adding Art to the traditional STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), reflects how creative it can be to apply technical knowledge to traditional problems. As burgeoning giants such as Uber show, we live in an age where a simple, well executed application can have a seismic impact on traditional industry. In the classroom, innovations such as the credit card sized Raspberry Pi computer are making it easier for students to develop exciting tech without expert intervention. One KGS student recently developed a motion sensing photo booth that tweets your photo on demand!
Summary of parental attitudes to digital making Nesta report "Young Digital Makers"
The House of Lords' "Make or Break" report shone a light on the growing digital skills gap in the modern workplace. It estimated that of the 30 million jobs in the current UK workforce only 7% were at the level of the ‘Digital muggle’, i.e. no digital skills required. By contrast, 46% were at “Digital worker” level, those who can ‘evaluate, configure and use digital systems’ and a further 10% at the level of ‘Digital maker’, those with “skills sufficient to build digital technology”. A recent study by innovation foundation Nesta, ‘Young Digital Makers’, showed that this movement towards digital making as a core activity is long overdue, with 82% of students surveyed showing an interest in digital making and 89% of parents believing it is a worthwhile activity.
Newly appointed STEAM coordinator at KGS, Mr Tim Benson, commented: “I hope to give all students at KGS the opportunity to become digital creators, giving them opportunities to learn specific technical skills such as coding through exciting and challenging real-world projects, from robotics to cyber security. In developing both our curricular and co-curricular opportunities, I believe we can develop a pathway for our students to enter higher education as confident, creative and skilled problem solvers for our digital age.” kgs.org.uk

Rather than bring a tribunal claim for unfair or discriminatory treatment she decided to start a petition calling for the law to be changed. Ms Thorp set up a petition on the Government website, calling for it to be illegal for employers to require female staff to wear high heels at work. The petition was successful in obtaining more than 150,000 signatures over 6 months.

Discovering a local treasure –
Dorich House Museum – a mere deer’s leap away from Richmond Park

orich House is the former studio home of the Russian sculptor Dora Gordine and her husband, the Hon. Richard Hare, a scholar of Russian art and literature. Grade II listed, the building was completed in 1936, to Gordine’s design, and is an exceptional example of a modern studio house. Following Gordine’s death in 1991 the house was acquired and renovated by Kingston University and is now open to the public. Dora was talented, charismatic and dedicated to her art and in 1938 she was praised as ‘very possibly becoming the finest woman sculptor in the world’ and remained a major presence in European sculpture until the late 1960s. Born into a middle-class Jewish family in Latvia, she grew up in Estonia, where she first exhibited her work. She moved to Paris in 1924, where she painted murals for the interior of the British pavilion for the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. She was invited to exhibit at the Salon
de Tuileries, where she achieved critical acclaim with her bronze Head of a Chinaman (on display at the Museum). Gordine pursued her career in London in the late 1920s. Her solo shows in London and Berlin led to further success which allowed her to commission her first studio home in Paris, from Auguste Perret, a leading architect of the day. In 1930, encouraged by more far-flung artistic opportunities, Gordine left Europe for
Singapore, where she was married later that year. The marriage didn’t last, but her time in south-east Asia was productive and her work of the early 1930s cemented her reputation as a sculptor of considerable talent. On her return to Europe, marriage to Richard Hare opened up a new social world and brought her public and private commissions. Gordine continued to enjoy professional success until the 1960s, but after Hare’s sudden death in 1966 withdrew from the busy public life they had enjoyed together. She continued to work until the mid-1970s and lived on at Dorich House until her death in 1991. The Museum is always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to support its work. ifferent face and eye shapes, skin types and tones require different approaches; here are some tips that will ensure you look an incredibly radiant, youthful and elegant version of yourself without appearing like you’ve had to put a lot of effort (or makeup) into it. For a flawless complexion… It’s worth seeing a good skincare specialist and find out which skincare products you should be using. Having great skin takes you a long way for looking incredible and you’ll need less makeup to cover imperfections.

A light foundation or a tinted moisturiser such as Chantecaille Just Skin Tinted Moisturiser and Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation worked well on Marja-Leena. ing touch to a flawless look. To cover any greys, use a tinted gel, such as Benefit Gimme Brow volumising fibre eyebrow gel.
Have your eyebrows shaped by a professional eyebrow specialist… Shapely, fuller eyebrows boost youthfulness and add that finish-

As for cheeks… Add colour and lift your cheeks by adding a little gentle bronzer and blusher to your makeup routine – this gives an instantly healthylooking complexion.
beauty
Baked Powder in Bronze 02. You’ll achieve a more natural finish when the bronzer isn’t too dark – aim to sweep it across the cheekbones from the hairline rather than starting in the middle of the cheek for a more gentle veil of colour. Lashes... LVL lash lift works wonders and is widely available at beauty salons. Natural lashes are curled in a specific way so that the curl lasts for 4 to 5 weeks. Your eyes will look lifted and more open. I love having this lash treatment done on myself. Alternatively curl your own lashes with a good eyelash curler, Kevyn Aucoin from Space NK or online is great. Squeeze the lashes close to the base for about 5 to 7 seconds and then swipe mascara on immediately afterwards. You’ll be wowed by the results. Lips… To inject life and youthfulness try a hint of flattering lip colour: this will also do wonders for your complexion. The pink lipstick that I used here is by is Fusion Pink by MAC. To define the lips and create a discreet fullness use a lip pencil close to your natural lip colour and colour in all over the lip. This will help the lipstick to keep longer too.
Finish for the eyes eyeshadow… My favourite eyeshadow palettes at the moment are Luxury Palette The Dolce Vita by Charlotte Tilbury and Tom Ford Nude Dip. To gently blend the eyeshadows use a good brush. My top tip is to pop a tiny bit of blusher colour on the brush and gently sweep it across your socket line. This will give a very gently diffused veil of fresh colour. You’ll see what it’ll do for your eyes! And eyeliner… Always use waterproof eyeliner to avoid smudging. Even a tiny bit of definition on the outer top lashline will do wonders for your eyes. Focus on getting the liner right in-between your lashes rather than have it sit above them because we don't want to see the eyeliner actually looking like eyeliner. For a sophisticated look, makeup should never be distracting and badly applied eyeliner can do just that. Use short strokes in-between your top lashes to create one straight line and add a tiny bit of non-black eyeshadow (think brown, grey or deep plum) on the outer edges of your lower lash-line. MAC 219 Pencil Brush is the perfect tool to achieve this gently diffused line.

Her work is loved by her clients who appreciate being captured in portraits that show them looking the best versions of themselves.
Most importantly… Lead an active lifestyle - long daily walks, breathing fresh air and stock up on fresh greens and avocados as well as oily fish. These will all keep you looking healthy and mean less makeup to look fabulous. Kristina Gasperas Makeup & Hair Studio, 5A-7A Golden Court, Richmond, TW9 1EU 07931-041395 www.kristinagasperas.com

BOOKS that connect you to YOUR TOWN Secret Kingston upon Thames by Julian McCarthy Where were Cut Throat Alley and Heathen Street? How many could be hanged at one time and where? Who won the battle of the town undertakers? Secret Kingston upon Thames goes behind the façades of the familiar to discover the lesser-known aspects of the town’s fascinating past. Kingston has many secrets, and as you walk along the streets you are walking on history’s footsteps. There are clear reminders of the town’s past everywhere, waiting for you to stop, look and listen to their intriguing stories. On a journey through this ancient town, local tour guide Julian McCarthy tells these forgotten or untold tales. You may think that you know Kingston, but take another look around and you will find more than you could possibly imagine!
Kingston upon Thames in 50 Buildings by Julian McCarthy Kingston first appears on record in the Anglo-Saxon chronicles when King Alfred the Great’s grandfather came here in AD 838, and by the tenth century it had become a place of coronation for at least two Anglo-Saxon kings, one of whom was the first King of England, King Egbert. Our town has managed to retain many of its historical roots, with the countless examples of beautiful architecture throughout the ages. The book explores history through a selection of the greatest of these treasures. In this unique study, Julian McCarthy celebrates Kingston’s heritage in a new and accessible way with a chronological tour of the town’s historic and modern buildings. Both books above are on sale at Kingston Museum, WH Smith, Waterstones and online.
The Humans by Matt Haig Be on the same page with Kingston’s students and University staff. Kingston University’s Big Read was first introduced in 2015 and aims to make those coming to the university feel welcome before they arrive by creating links between them and the staff and students already here. All new students will receive the same book before they arrive and staff are reading it too. Current students can pick up a free copy. When I received last year’s book, The Humans by Matt Haig, in the post it was a lovely surprise. What a great book it turned out to be! I couldn’t put it down. It's about an alien who gradually learns to be human, written in a style of anthropological observation. It’s about his struggle to figure out "the rules of life’. There is spousal fidelity and overcoming years of strained relationships. Plenty of humour and many clever observations about ourselves.

She thinks cyberbullying and anxiety over the number of social media likes is one of the causes behind self harming in young people and children. WELLBEING IN THE HOME With Absolute Abode’s designer Kirsty McMorron
A
s we are celebrating the Great British Summer, with long luxurious days, sunshine (and sometimes showers!) and the odd twilight Pimms, we are relishing relaxing and soaking up the atmosphere of the season. The Championships are upon us again, and Wimbledon is buzzing with summer excitement. We have some time to reflect on how we enjoy our homes, and how we can improve or update our space. At Absolute Abode, we understand how important your health and wellbeing is, and the best place to start is where you spend most of your time - at home! According to the UK Green Building Council’s Health and Wellbeing in Homes report from July 2016, ‘health and wellbeing’ includes social, psychological and physical factors. For most of us, our homes are our sanctuaries, so it makes sense to do our best to ensure we enhance our health and well-being at home as much as we can. Whilst some changes may be more dramatic, like well-designed ventilation and sound insulation1, there are many ways that we can make simple changes with big impact. Here are just a few ways that we can enhance our health and wellbeing at home2: • Having a bedroom that promotes healthy sleep and relaxation with the right colours and light levels • Creating enough storage and space for us to put away all our belongings and bits and pieces so we have a calm, relaxing space rather than being stressed about the chaos or ‘stuff’ that constantly needs to be put away or sorted out • Having a kitchen that promotes family interaction, with a good space layout and encourages healthy eating • Having a living space that provides stimulating environments for socialising and play • Optimising light with generous access to sunlight and daylight, and well supplementary designed electric lighting We help ourselves to flourish in our own environments when we create opportunities to be restored, uplift our spirits and, most importantly, be happy! We would love to help you enhance your home and ensure that every time you walk in the door, you feel like you’re in your sanctuary. Absolute Abode is a British Institute of Interior Design Registered Practice, which means you can rest assured that we will provide you with a professional, competent service. Please feel free to get in touch with us for a complimentary consultation, to discuss your ideas further. THE WILLOW HEALTH RESTAURANT & BAR The Willow is an award-winning, new health restaurant & bar offering a unique and deliciously healthy culinary experience in Kingston-upon-Thames
“
Food as medicine,” the concept that wholesome food provides the foundation for good health, was coined by Hippocrates. This classical perspective on holistic medicine has seen a recent revival amongst nutritionists in the Western world. The Willow is the first restaurant in the UK to translate this long-established view of nutrition into modern cuisine, and it tastes delicious! The Willow offers an environment where you can relax and tantalise your taste buds. Their menu is entirely gluten-free and also offers dairy-free, grain-free, low-carb, protein-rich, lower-sugar, vegan, Paleo and FODMAP-friendly
nutrient-rich options. It's also complemented by awardwinning, gluten free beers on draught (another first for a UK restaurant), organic and biodynamic low-sulphite wines, and infused spirits and cocktails. You can enjoy a morning direct trade coffee; take the kids for a spot of lunch (their interactive children’s menu is superb); or enjoy a refreshing glass of natural wine with friends over dinner. The Willow is co-located with the holistic healthcare clinic Irrefutable Health, where functional medicine, chiropractic, nutritional therapy, acupuncture, massage and podiatry are in daily practice.

WINDOWS The remedy is to create an air barrier between the bottom of the pot and the stone windowsill which breaks the transfer of heat/cold very nicely. Garden centres do sell pot feet, but if these are not your bag, then you can elevate your container simply by using short wooden dowels that you can slot in at each end of the pot. If you cut them carefully and paint them black, then they will Garden in a mess? remain relatively hidden.

itting in a traffic jam yesterday, I spied a rather elegant window box through the car window, and I was there long enough for some deeper thought.
I liked the combination of white shuttered window with the black planter. I also liked the contrast of the attractively marked pelargonium leaves with the bright scarlet flower heads – but I knew that there could have been more flowers. For a plant to flower its little head off, it must have access to the right kind of plant food, and here the right kind of fertiliser balance is less nitrogen and more potassium. Not all plant foods are the same, and the NPK ratio of the one that I always recommend for a flowering plant is 12:7:19 which is perfect.

Treat your plants to a garden MOT! Each and every plant gets an in-depth look to make sure everything is in place for it to flourish.
However, the one concern than I did have while I sat there in the traffic queue was that the planter (presumably metal) was sitting straight onto the concrete windowsill. This is not a good idea for a couple of reasons; firstly, as the sun shines on the concrete windowsill, it heats up and this heat is then radiated upwards (like a night storage heater) into the pot. The net result is the soil dries out very quickly, and the roots could ‘cook’. Actually, the same temperature transfer happens in winter, but this time it’s the chill that’s travelling; and cold roots are not happy roots either, believe me!
It’s an eye-opening journey around your garden, and you will be truly inspired. It’s also fun and your plants will thank you!

West led A♣ and, when dummy hit baize, declarer appreciated only that it held two aces and a doubleton heart. West followed with K♣ and then a third club, which East ruffed with 2♠. East returned K♦ and declarer relaxed - all, he felt, would be well now. He won the trick with A♦ and correctly cashed A♥, then K♥ and led 9♥ to trump in dummy (this, he must do before drawing trumps, or he will be left with a heart loser at the end of the hand). Thoughtlessly, he trumped with dummy’s 5♠ and was horrified when East over-trumped with 8♠. However, no one was sympathetic, not even his partner. West had overcalled the heart suit at the 2-level without either ace or king and South, holding the five top trumps, should undoubtedly have been aware that East could be out of hearts and must therefore lavish a little care and ruff, not low, but with dummy’s 9♠ - a card just as important as the two aces. This achieved, trumps may be draw and the contract brought home safely.

ow, don’t be frightened, Flossie, I said to the the long-legged house spider imagining it with blond hair and lipstick. “Come on sweetie… freedom beckons,” I carried on talking as I released it from the tub into the grass. “Off you go… break for the border!” No doubt, an afternoon course with Spider Courage has had a profound effect on how I now viewed the common arachnid. I’ve never liked them. The way they scuttle haphazardly, the way they come towards you on the sofa. Too many legs… But Spider Courage Course creator Britain Stella (who owns 57 tarantulas and a Cup for Britain’s Best In Show), explains to you, “They scuttle because the little critters are so helpless, they can only move in a haphazard way to escape predators. They come towards the sofa because the noise of the TV frightens them and they want the darkness under your legs”. Ah, so not your actual legs. then? “Think instead of their poor legs… so fragile and delicate, they are too easily broken. We should feel sorry for them”. As for Flossie mentioned earlier, I’d just saved her life. She’d been dehydrated in the house - and indeed, the

This is all part of the mental re-programming before the final reveal of the spiders. Britain’s co-partner is Adam Cox, a Harley street psychologist and hypnotherapist, who took us through visualisation exercises, and as 12 of us sat in the room listening to his dulcet tones, the stress eased. Like kids, we were invited to draw, colour in and name a spider. Naming REALLY helps. A furry tarantula called “baby Wookie" is a lot less threatening. You almost want to cuddle it. By the end of the day, a real Wookie was crossing my palm (though I did stop at clasping it to my bosom and tickling its chin). Final proof it all worked was the macho tattooed lad next to me who at the beginning, shrieked at a picture. A few hours later, Wookie had him wrapped round her little leg. creaturecourage.com Private/group sessions available (discount for Darling readers until September 2017)
