editor’s letter
We are so excited to bring you this first edition of Darling Richmond and Twickenham! The Darling team has been writing to SW London, North Surrey and Ascot readers, most of whom are women like you, for nearly nine years now. We bring our readers interesting, local and varied topics that aim to inspire. Our story started in Wimbledon Village and it’s gone from strength to strength ever since, reaching over 100,000 loyal readers today. We are thrilled to have Samantha Trinder, the owner of bhuti and The Bingham Hotel, as our Inspiring Woman. Samantha’s approach to combining a healthy work-life balance and running, not just one, but two successful businesses, is truly inspirational. Hill Rise on Richmond Hill is one of my favourite places for a spot of shopping or a quiet catch up with a friend, over a coffee, drink or a meal. We’ve spoken to the business owners there to find out what’s behind the pretty shopfronts. We’ve also lifted the curtain at the Stage Golfing Society at Richmond Golf Club and bring you a great shortlist of the best places to eat and drink now locally. We’ve got Wimbledon Tennis and the pick of the best for the summer season events covered too. This summer issue also gives you tips and advice for a healthy and stylish summer ahead; from Alex the Healthy Girl’s easy to slim down tips and Chris James’s 12Day Cleanse (yes, there is still time for that), to Lesley Silwood's styling for a cool and sophisticated look and Kristina Gasperas's expert makeup tips for making you the most beautiful version of you. Hope you enjoy the read! Until September .. when we’ll bring you our autumn issue. Samantha TRINDER
has Richmond in her blood
T
eaching yoga, running and fabulous hotel and a wellness centre should be a tall order but Samantha takes it in her stride. Our editor went to find out how she does it. When Samantha was just five, her parents bought the Bingham as a family home, to live in one part and let rooms in the other. They had been running a successful nursing home business previously. Samantha and her siblings and cousins all worked at the hotel during school and university holidays and she saw

from a young age that the place had potential to be so much more than the budget accommodation it was offering. Samantha’s moment to fulfil this potential came when she was in her early twenties when her mother wanted to sell the hotel which was in financial difficulty. Someone from the family had to step in to save the hotel and she stepped up to the challenge in 2001, taking over the running of it in 2004. Her first priorities were to improve the service and smarten the place up. A number of the original team left, and things

started improving. Only a year into her role, in 2005, an extensive business plan for refurbishments was put together in order to create Richmond’s first boutique hotel. Samantha has now got a great right hand man managing the hotel, Erick Kervaon, who carries on the ethos of delivering old school personal service.
You have proven to be an amazing hotelier after turning the Bingham around and making it into Richmond’s first, and still the only,
inspiring woman boutique hotel after you took over at the helm. What would you say are the key qualities in you that have made this possible? As a Cancerian, I like to make a place feel like a home and look nice - a boutique hotel should be a home from home, but even more special than that. I was also a bit of a daydreamer and a bookworm as a child, I studied English at university and always had a way with words. At the start, I used to write all the hotel brochures, newsletters and the website content. Sadly, I can’t fit that into my day now but I do think it gave us a bit of an edge as all the written communication was carefully considered and sounded that little bit different from what you’d expect. I think I inherited good people skills from my father. It’s a strength especially when dealing with difficult
guests and also in everyday dealings with staff too. I don’t see myself as the best manager but I think I’m quite an inspirational person who can motivate others. Thankfully our staff and the people we work with buy into my vision. It has worked well despite me spending less time at the hotel last year when I was setting up bhuti. One good example is when we hired a new chef in 2008 who wanted to get a Michelin Star. And we got it in 2011! It was a team effort as we all shared this goal and worked towards achieving it.
As if running the Bingham wouldn’t keep you busy enough, you opened another sizeable business, bhuti, last year. Where did the idea for a wellbeing and yoga centre come from? I got into yoga in 2002 after my son was born. I found running the hotel quite stressful and don’t see
myself as a natural business leader as I take things very personally. Having taken just six weeks off with my son, I wanted a proper maternity leave when I had my daughter five years ago and decided to embark on yoga teacher training initially to learn more, as there is so much to learn about the body and the mind. I’ve done three yoga teacher qualifications now. Our lifestyle in the western world takes its toll on our health. The idea for bhuti evolved from this interest in healthy living. I had my eyes on the bhuti site for a long time. When it became available in 2009 we couldn’t secure it at the right price and it became The Sanctuary Spa. I then embarked on a meditation course to further my knowledge. We tried again to get the site at 2012 when the Sanctuary closed down but the landlord didn’t accept our offer then either. Another two-three years went by and I was now a qualified yoga teacher and busy teaching when we finally

inspiring woman succeeded in acquiring the building. It’s as if the universe was ready when it was the perfect time for me to find my own place where I could bring healthy eating, yoga and treatments together in one wellness centre. The idea for running a place that’s like a day-retreat came from my childhood. My mother went to retreats regularly, for the first time just after my father’s death, when I was 12, and she had broken down. I think that experience almost saved her life. She was running a big company, her husband had just died, she had three children to support and the business was about to go under. So an idea of a retreat had been at the back of my mind for a long time.
How do you split your time between your two businesses? I have been spending most of my time at bhuti since it opened just over a year ago. It’s now stable and established so I will be spending a bit more time at the Bingham again. We will be refurbishing the bar and the restaurant soon having

just finished the bedrooms and I enjoy being very involved with the whole process. I also teach three to four yoga classes and a couple of private lessons a week. Teaching a class changes my mood right away and everything seems so much better, fabulous actually! Attending a yoga class leaves us feeling good afterwards, but teaching a class for me is even more amazing.’
Do you see one of your children joining in the family business later? Not necessarily. In fact, my son Remus dreams of becoming a professional golfer, and my daughter Ana-May says, with her five-year old’s enthusiasm, that she’d love to be a teacher. I feel at times that I’m not doing enough parenting. It’s a balancing act as I work in the evenings so I try to spend the afternoons with my children. Although I believe that children need to learn to be independent too. One of my

happiest times was when I was on maternity leave with my daughter, but I decided to go back to work fearing that I would get bored being a stay at home mum. When I was studying for my yoga diploma I learned about functional illnesses, which are stress-related illnesses, and how these have increased monumentally in women, by around 25%, over the last decade. Women are over-working and over-stretched as most of us still bear the responsibility of home, housework and childcare despite working full-time.
What are your favourite places/restaurants/shops in Richmond? The Retreat Kitchen on Richmond Hill and also Petersham Nurseries, are great for breakfast and lunch. I always find something lovely to wear at Anna Boutique which is next door to bhuti. 1 Duke Street is great for meeting friends over cocktails.

ick-start a healthy eating plan now to avoid jetting off on your summer holiday wishing you had started sooner. These two principles are key to achieving an effective healthy eating lifestyle that lasts: Reduce Sugar Reduce your sugar intake, including from hidden sugars in bread, rice, pasta and potatoes. Choose low glycemic alternatives to balance blood sugar and naturally support your metabolism. You’ll
also reduce cravings, poor energy, brain fog and the likelihood of many life-threatening diseases. Instead switch to brown rice, quinoa or lentils. Swap white potatoes for cauliflower, sweet potatoes or butternut squash. Try gluten free rye/pumpernickel bread, it’s especially tasty when toasted. Add Protein Power Low glycemic protein rich meals will energise and help you stay on track all day long. At breakfast opt for eggs and smoked salmon on rye, or yoghurt with berries and chia seeds. Eat lean meats or wild fish with green veggies at lunch and dinner. Also, take a slow release casein protein drink like Proform daily to enhance energy and help pull in your waist, plus firm and tone your body all over. info@thehealthygirl.co.uk thehealthygirl.co.uk/shop

Wow! I was blown away by the smoothness of my skin afterwards. My stubborn lines, on my forehead especially, had disappeared and lines around my eyes seemed a lot finer. My skin is still looking and feeling hydrated and the deeper lines haven’t come back yet, a week after the treatment. See: inharmonyspiritbalance.co.uk
My therapist Ashley promised I would see amazing results even after one treatment (£80) although a course of three is recommended. This is an intensive resurfacing medi-facial using plant based pharmaceutical-grade ingredients - gentle on the skin but achieving maximum results. After cleansing my skin, a powerful Intensive Resurfacing Masque, made with sugar cane extract which is a potent natural source of glycolic acid and retinol (vitamin A), was applied to my face and left for 5 minutes. This was a peel, but so gentle that no down time was needed. Ashley warned me that the removal method would feel quite hot but was nothing to worry 12

Vibrant VEGAN FOOD comes to Richmond
T
he Retreat Kitchen in Richmond brings a much-needed injection of vibrancy to vegan food. The cafe owners Nick Knowles, Maggie Nuttall and Claire Langdon reveal that the idea to open the cafe was born out of the acclaimed BBC programme, ‘The Retreat’, which saw participants head to a Thailand detox retreat for a life changing adventure. They provide a creative selection of vegan dishes and drinks, such as beetroot brownies, cashew ‘cheesy’ leek and broccoli quiches, creamy oat milk lattes and a seasonal salad bar; food that’s not just good for you, but good for the planet too. Claire and Maggie combine local produce, products and international flair designed to surprise and delight even the most stubborn of carnivores. Claire, a former Detective Constable, says “Maggie and I wanted to bring the spirit of clean and healthy eating back from Thailand. We were so inspired by how they made meat free dishes so effortlessly, which looked and tasted amazing. It was mind boggling to see, having previously eaten meat with virtually every meal. It is certainly more challenging doing it ourselves as home cooks but we are working relentlessly to perfect our recipes to make sure they impress.”
Maggie, who spent 25 years working in the media before setting up The Retreat Kitchen, adds, “For us, a plant based diet wasn’t about giving up meat, it was about taking up eating a wider variety of vegetables and putting in the time and effort to make them stand out. The effect on our wellbeing and health has been life changing and we want to share those effects far and wide by offering the dishes to as many people as possible. As Nick always says, ‘’You don’t have to be a vegan to enjoy our food.” The weekend is a laid back affair with an all day brunch menu where you can enjoy Maggie and Claire’s take on traditional breakfast offerings including stuffed chickpea omelette, mushroom florentine muffin with hollandaise sauce and loaded fresh fruit, banana and cinnamon pancakes. The Retreat Kitchen is open Tuesdays-Fridays, 8.30am to 5pm and for brunch and afternoon tea at the weekends from 9:30am to 5pm.

Q: The moment my husband and I start discussing summer holidays, we end up arguing. He wants to go to a sunny place and lie by the pool. I love to go to the mountains and be active. Each year our holiday is a stressful experience, as I don’t enjoy the heat and end up spending time in the gym or in my room while he is outside or we go for a hike and he is moaning at me all the time. Instead of having fun, we just create stress for each other. How can we have a great holiday together? Emily A: Dear Emily, happy relationships are partly about negotiating differences and that is clearly the case in your relationship when it comes to holidays. You have tried to accommodate each other but that hasn’t worked. I would suggest that you won’t even contemplate a sunny or a mountain holiday together anymore.
Your interests are too wide apart to make a compromise work. Let me take you back a step and ask the question what you want from a holiday, regardless of the destination: do you want to recharge your batteries, broadening your horizon or reconnect in your relationship? And what is your husband’s aim? Knowing what you both want will define the next step. So, if recharging is the aim for both of you through sun or mountains, you each have to find a friend or a group to go with. However, if you are both keen to explore new things, you have a joint project and you could end up together on a cruise, a city-break or an alternative holiday focussed on painting or wine making. Discovering things together might open up a whole new dimension in your relationship and in your holidays! There are a lot more types of holiday than the mountains or the sun. Let me know where you end up this year.

ifferent face and eye shapes, skin types and tones require different approaches; here are some tips that will ensure you look an incredibly radiant, youthful and elegant version of yourself without appearing like you’ve had to put a lot of effort (or makeup) into it. For a flawless complexion… It’s worth seeing a good skincare specialist and find out which skincare products you should be using. Having great skin takes you a long way for looking incredible and you’ll need less makeup to cover imperfections.

A light foundation or a tinted moisturiser such as Chantecaille Just Skin Tinted Moisturiser and Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation worked well on Marja-Leena. Any darkness under her eyes was covered with a little bit of Estée Lauder Double Wear. Bourjois Healthy Mix and By Terry Terrybly Densities is also good.
ing touch to a flawless look. To cover any greys, use a tinted gel, such as Benefit Gimme Brow volumising fibre eyebrow gel.
Have your eyebrows shaped by a professional eyebrow specialist… Shapely, fuller eyebrows boost youthfulness and add that finish-

As for cheeks… Add colour and lift your cheeks by adding a little gentle bronzer and blusher to your makeup routine – this gives an instantly healthylooking complexion.
beauty
Baked Powder in Bronze 02. You’ll achieve a more natural finish when the bronzer isn’t too dark – aim to sweep it across the cheekbones from the hairline rather than starting in the middle of the cheek for a more gentle veil of colour. Lashes... LVL lash lift works wonders and is widely available at beauty salons. Natural lashes are curled in a specific way so that the curl lasts for 4 to 5 weeks. Your eyes will look lifted and more open. I love having this lash treatment done on myself. Alternatively curl your own lashes with a good eyelash curler, Kevyn Aucoin from Space NK or online is great. Squeeze the lashes close to the base for about 5 to 7 seconds and then swipe mascara on immediately afterwards. You’ll be wowed by the results. Lips… To inject life and youthfulness try a hint of flattering lip colour: this will also do wonders for your complexion. The pink lipstick that I used here is by is Fusion Pink by MAC. To define the lips and create a discreet fullness use a lip pencil close to your natural lip colour and colour in all over the lip. This will help the lipstick to keep longer too.
Finish for the eyes eyeshadow… My favourite eyeshadow palettes at the moment are Luxury Palette The Dolce Vita by Charlotte Tilbury and Tom Ford Nude Dip. To gently blend the eyeshadows use a good brush. My top tip is to pop a tiny bit of blusher colour on the brush and gently sweep it across your socket line. This will give a very gently diffused veil of fresh colour. You’ll see what it’ll do for your eyes! And eyeliner… Always use waterproof eyeliner to avoid smudging. Even a tiny bit of definition on the outer top lashline will do wonders for your eyes. Focus on getting the liner right in-between your lashes rather than have it sit above them because we don't want to see the eyeliner actually looking like eyeliner. For a sophisticated look, makeup should never be distracting and badly applied eyeliner can do just that. Use short strokes in-between your top lashes to create one straight line and add a tiny bit of non-black eyeshadow (think brown, grey or deep plum) on the outer edges of your lower lash-line. MAC 219 Pencil Brush is the perfect tool to achieve this gently diffused line.
Kristina Gasperas is a national award-winning makeup artist and her K-Team of skilled makeup artists and hairstylists specialise in flawless, youthful and naturally beautiful makeup and flattering red-carpet-inspired hairstyling for all ages and have ex-pertise in corrective as well as anti-ageing techniques. Private makeup lessons available. Kristina is also a professional portrait photographer. Her work is loved by her clients who appreciate being captured in portraits that show them looking the best versions of themselves.
Most importantly… Lead an active lifestyle - long daily walks, breathing fresh air and stock up on fresh greens and avocados as well as oily fish. These will all keep you looking healthy and mean less makeup to look fabulous. Kristina Gasperas Makeup & Hair Studio, 5A-7A Golden Court, Richmond, TW9 1EU 07931-041395 www.kristinagasperas.com

FASHION for a CAUSE Richmond students took to the catwalk Darling editor reporting from the front row

esigners around the world are using the runway as a means to speak out about the political climate and addressing issues from racial and cultural diversity to women's rights. Students at Richmond University, The American International University in London, did their bit too by organising a fashion show on their Richmond Hill campus. The Fashion for a Cause campus group attracted a great group of young Londonbased designers, including Omniss, Arantxa, Anna-Maria (couture) and Point Blank to show off their designs.
All the proceeds from the show were donated to PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) and Unicef. ICOARM were also at the event raising awareness of the valuable work they do in refugee camps. Their objectives are to relieve poverty and sickness by providing emergency food, health care and water; to empower refugees through programs that restore human dignity, advocate policy changes and also promote human rights of refugees and migrants.

Dxrsa’s live performance gave the show a gorgeous soundtrack and Gugu entertained the crowds at the afterparty.

he big wait is almost over. The shades are out, the BBQs are prepped and the Pimm’s is ready. Summer is, most definitely, on the horizon. To celebrate, we have compiled a round-up of the best upcoming events this season: Hampton Court Palace Festival – A stellar line-up, beautiful backdrops and picnics galore, the Palace knows how to throw a festival. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, this year should be extra special. With performances from Bryan Ferry, Michael Ball & Alfie Boe, and the legendary Van Morrison, it certainly looks that way.
RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show – Another spectacular event held at the Palace, this one of the floral kind. From 4th – 9th July, Hampton Court will be home to world-class show gardens, a Plant Village and a Festival of Roses. With over 300 gardening and food stalls, a magical butterfly dome and celebrity talks and demos, there really is something for everyone. Royal Ascot – Get your bets ready and your outfits sorted,

Running from 28th June – 2nd July, Henley showcases some of our best rowing talent, whilst offering spectators riverboat cruises, live entertainment and top-notch hospitality. Battle Of
The Brands
From knee-lengths to crop-tops, by local historian Richard Jones skimpy) designs appearing on the courts with each passing year. When tennis superstar Chris Evert signed with Italian sportswear label Ellesse in 1979 it was the start of a new era of women’s tennis fashion and a new type of relationship between athletes and big brands. Evert, who had already won two of her three Wimbledon singles titles by then, became a globe-trotting model and ambassador for a brand whose signature look combined bright colours with simple, functional designs. If you were lucky enough to be around during the years when Chris was playing, it is likely you still recall her as she looked throughout the 1980s, the last decade of her career, wearing a simple Ellesse skirt and vest combination. The Ellesse brand had been founded in 1959 “on a dream of creating the world’s most stylish sportswear brand.” This sort of marketing-speak is commonplace today, but back then sports apparel and footwear had been largely functional rather than fashionable, and clothing for woman players had either been of the simple two-piece shirt and shorts variety or bespoke dresses made by famous designers such as Jean Patou, who designed for Suzanne Lenglen, Coco Chanel and Teddy Tinling. The latter, incidentally, went on to design Chris Evert’s dress for her wedding to John Lloyd in 1979.

omen’s tennis fashion has come a long way from the wide-brimmed hats, long skirts and matronly aprons worn by the Wimbledon champions of the Victorian era. Starting with Suzanne Lenglen’s daring knee-length skirts and bare arms in the 1920s, tennis has become the launch-pad for fashion innovation, with new fabrics and ever-more practical (some would say

The first colour TV outside broadcast from Wimbledon in 1967 had triggered a worldwide tennis boom, and as millions of new fans switched onto the sport during the 1970s it became big business, particularly in the US. Even before Chris Evert had signed her contract with Ellesse she had had her own range of tennis clothing for eight years, designed by Puritan Fashions of New York. Ellesse was one of the first companies to signal the change towards sportswear becoming leisurewear, even for those who had never swung a tennis racquet in their life.

Serena Williams
During the 1980s and 90s, players became closely associated with the clothes they wore and the companies which made them. Martina Navratilova was the embodiment of the Puma brand, whilst German rival Adidas was synonymous with the power and athleticism of Steffi Graf. With Martina’s fantastic career drawing to a close, the company signed Serena Williams and the high-water mark in their relationship came when the younger of the Williams sisters attracted enormous publicity by wearing a figure-hugging black catsuit at the 2002 US Open. Sister Venus, meanwhile, wore Reebok apparel before creating her own “EleVen” brand in 2007. “The whole philosophy of EleVen is about overcoming adversity and triumphing over anything while looking fashionable doing it,” said the five-time Wimbledon singles champion.

Anna Kournikova
The modern professional tennis player is a supremely-fit athlete, and as far as clothing is concerned functionality now comes firmly ahead of appearance. One wonders what the early Wimbledon champions in their voluminous ankle-length skirts would have made of it all!
In the same year that Serena was stunning the New York crowds in her black catsuit, Russia’s Anna Kournikova was pictured at the Miami Open wearing an Adidas creation consisting of short shorts and a stretch bra. According to reports at the time (2002), “her sexy glamour did wonders for Adidas way beyond the tennis courts.” Since the year 2000, even the most glamorous tennis players have become little more than clothes-horses in the never-ending battle between the two superpowers of tennis apparel, Adidas and Nike. New ranges are produced for the Australian Open, French Open, US Open and Wimbledon Championships each year, many of which never reach high street sports stores.

SETTLEMENT AGREEMENTS ensuring a MOORE favourable exit
I
f you find yourself in circumstances where you are offered a Settlement Agreement (formerly known as Compromise Agreement) upon leaving a business, understanding the terms and deciding whether to accept can be quite daunting. Due to the complex nature of Settlement Agreements it is important that you instruct a specialised lawyer who will take you through the agreement comprehensively and explain the implications so that you are fully satisfied that you are receiving the best deal possible.
What is a Settlement Agreement? Employees cannot waive claims against their employer arising under employment legislation unless they enter into a formal Settlement Agreement that fulfils strict statutory requirements. Settlement Agreements may be offered to employees to end
the employment relationship on agreed terms, possibly in a redundancy situation, or to resolve a dispute that has arisen. The agreement will usually offer a lump sum payment and in return the employee signs away their rights to ever bring a claim against their employer. Why have I been asked to enter into a Settlement Agreement? Once a valid Settlement Agreement has been signed by both parties you will be unable to bring an Employment Tribunal claim in relation to any matter set out in the agreement. Your employer may ask you to enter into a Settlement Agreement because they are concerned that you may have a claim against their business or because they do this as routine when an employee leaves their organisation.
Naomi Greenwood
How can Moore Blatch assist you? We can advise you on what potential claims may have arisen in the course of your employment and the value of your claims so that you can properly weigh up the offer on the table. The team at Moore Blatch has vast experience in advising on and negotiating the terms of Settlement Agreements across all industry sectors. We will negotiate robustly and sensitively on your behalf, advising creatively and meaningfully on the best angle to take. THE STAGE Golfing Society Where could you share a post-game drink with a film star, a well-known presenter, a musician or a top producer in Richmond? By Marja-Leena Toseland
I
n order to find out, I was headed to Richmond Golf Club to discover what The Stage Golfing Society is all about. Luckily I’d brought my camera as upon arrival as I got to witness the prize-giving ceremony for the Theodore Goddard Bowl which was won by Richard Mills, a retired West End producer and theatre executive, and Terence Frisby, writer of many great plays such as There’s a Girl in My Soup. The Stage Golfing Society is very much part of the life at Richmond Golf Club, where it has its Club Room, walls clad with Honour Boards listing many great names from the past and present of the entertainment industry - Sir Laurence Olivier (later Lord Olivier) Tom Ellis, Dougray Scott - the current President of the Society, Tom Holland and Philip Glenister to name but a few. The boards date back to 1903 and the Society has been in Richmond since the early 1960s. I was told by my hosts, Philippa Kennedy OBE, Captain of the Society and John Peters, Secretary, who also said that George Edwardes, the celebrated Impresario, founded the Society for the actors in his theatrical companies in order to ensure

year. You can just imagine what a great performance that must be with so many leading entertainers doing it just for fun.
Actors from all London theatres were soon able to join and the membership was later extended to all theatres in Britain. As the entertainment industry changed over time, performers on both TV and cinema were welcomed. Today’s members include also musicians, comedians, dancers, presenters, directors, writers and producers.
The Society has around 350 members now, ranging from their early 20s to late 80s. New members are welcomed, especially women - the same goes for Richmond Golf Club itself. They are keen to boost their women’s section with players of all levels.
In order to give something back to their hosts at the Club, the society puts on a show once a

The IVY CAFÉ claims its place in the Richmond league of top-notch eateries Darling editor grabbed a girlfriend and headed for a Saturday supper We didn’t feel like drinking a whole bottle of wine so opted for a glass of Chablis - La Chablisienne, Le Finage, from France and Malbec - Bodega Catena from Argentina - both were lovely choices.

he place was full and buzzing with a lively atmosphere and pre-dinner cocktails felt like the way to start. I had a refreshing peach Bellini and Sky had a Richmond Park Royale, created especially for Richmond by the Executive Bar Manager, Jeremy Evans. I was very happy to find my favourite, Atlantic sea scallops on the starter menu. These were beautifully tender and served with pea purée, sea cress and crispy shallots. Sky opted for tuna carpaccio which was super fresh and perfectly matched with spiced avocado, lime créme fraîche and coriander. The mains didn’t disappoint either, although I wished I had ordered the line caught swordfish Sky chose - divine! Served with red pepper sauce, toasted fregola, pesto, lemon and baby basil. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy my braised venison with pancetta, carrots, mushrooms and shallots although it didn’t look quite as appealing as the fish. Nevertheless it tasted gamey and hearty, the way it should.
I’m a big fan of puddings and my rhubarb and raspberry panna cotta lived up to its promise and so did Sky’s apple tart which came with vanilla ice cream and Calvados flambé. Our friendly and knowledgable waiter suggested their house champagne, Montoy, as a light alternative to accompany our desserts. A perfect choice! In keeping with the quintessentially British look of The Ivy Collection sites, critically-acclaimed Martin Brudnizki Design Studio consulted on the interiors, as they did with the sister sites in Marylebone, Wimbledon Village and St John’s Wood. The bespoke artwork, created by Adam Ellis and inspired by the natural landscapes of Richmond Hill and Richmond Park, ads to the stylish, but accessible and relaxed atmosphere. A proportion of tables are held back for walk-ins, allowing locals to drop in throughout the day. Open late too! 8am to midnight, Monday - Thursday and until 1am on Friday-Saturday.

Discovering a local treasure –
Dorich House Museum – a mere deer’s leap away from Richmond Park
D
orich House is the former studio home of the Russian sculptor Dora Gordine and her husband, the Hon. Richard Hare, a scholar of Russian art and literature. Grade II listed, the building was completed in 1936, to Gordine’s design, and is an exceptional example of a modern studio house. Following Gordine’s death in 1991 the house was acquired and renovated by Kingston University and is now open to the public. Dora was talented, charismatic and dedicated to her art and in 1938 she was praised as ‘very possibly becoming the finest woman sculptor in the world’ and remained a major presence in European sculpture until the late 1960s. Born into a middle-class Jewish family in Latvia, she grew up in Estonia, where she first exhibited her work. She moved to Paris in 1924, where she painted murals for the interior of the British pavilion for the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. She was invited to exhibit at the Salon
de Tuileries, where she achieved critical acclaim with her bronze Head of a Chinaman (on display at the Museum). Gordine pursued her career in London in the late 1920s. Her solo shows in London and Berlin led to further success which allowed her to commission her first studio home in Paris, from Auguste Perret, a leading architect of the day. In 1930, encouraged by more far-flung artistic opportunities, Gordine left Europe for
Singapore, where she was married later that year. The marriage didn’t last, but her time in south-east Asia was productive and her work of the early 1930s cemented her reputation as a sculptor of considerable talent. On her return to Europe, marriage to Richard Hare opened up a new social world and brought her public and private commissions. Gordine continued to enjoy professional success until the 1960s, but after Hare’s sudden death in 1966 withdrew from the busy public life they had enjoyed together. She continued to work until the mid-1970s and lived on at Dorich House until her death in 1991. The Museum is always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to support its work. 10km race this year! I am very much looking forward to the challenge and to raise much needed funds to help transform more lives.”
'm very excited to be running in this year’s Runfest. I’ve been told it’s the most exclusive race in London - only the Victoria Foundation is allowed such access to Kew Gardens. I am a regular runner, and have been doing my 8-10k runs in Richmond Park couple of times a week for years now. I’m going to be upping my runs during the summer and do at least one practice 13 mile, 21k, run too. I haven’t got a target time in mind as I just want to be able to run the whole distance comfortably and still enjoy the atmosphere of it all.

There are still places left for if you would like to join me, and the hundreds of other runners, and help The Victoria Foundation reach their fundraising target, please donate at: https://richmondrunningfestivalhalfmarathon2017.everydayhero. com/uk/marja-leena

THE WILLOW HEALTH RESTAURANT & BAR The Willow is an award-winning, new health restaurant & bar offering a unique and deliciously healthy culinary experience in Kingston-upon-Thames
“
Food as medicine,” the concept that wholesome food provides the foundation for good health, was coined by Hippocrates. This classical perspective on holistic medicine has seen a recent revival amongst nutritionists in the Western world. The Willow is the first restaurant in the UK to translate this long-established view of nutrition into modern cuisine, and it tastes delicious! The Willow offers an environment where you can relax and tantalise your taste buds. Their menu is entirely gluten-free and also offers dairy-free, grain-free, low-carb, protein-rich, lower-sugar, vegan, Paleo and FODMAP-friendly
nutrient-rich options. It's also complemented by awardwinning, gluten free beers on draught (another first for a UK restaurant), organic and biodynamic low-sulphite wines, and infused spirits and cocktails. You can enjoy a morning direct trade coffee; take the kids for a spot of lunch (their interactive children’s menu is superb); or enjoy a refreshing glass of natural wine with friends over dinner. The Willow is co-located with the holistic healthcare clinic Irrefutable Health, where functional medicine, chiropractic, nutritional therapy, acupuncture, massage and podiatry are in daily practice.

WINDOWS The remedy is to create an air barrier between the bottom of the pot and the stone windowsill which breaks the transfer of heat/cold very nicely. Garden centres do sell pot feet, but if these are not your bag, then you can elevate your container simply by using short wooden dowels that you can slot in at each end of the pot. itting in a traffic jam yesterday, I spied a rather elegant window box through the car window, and I was there long enough for some deeper thought.
I liked the combination of white shuttered window with the black planter. I also liked the contrast of the attractively marked pelargonium leaves with the bright scarlet flower heads – but I knew that there could have been more flowers. For a plant to flower its little head off, it must have access to the right kind of plant food, and here the right kind of fertiliser balance is less nitrogen and more potassium. Not all plant foods are the same, and the NPK ratio of the one that I always recommend for a flowering plant is 12:7:19 which is perfect.

Treat your plants to a garden MOT! Each and every plant gets an in-depth look to make sure everything is in place for it to flourish.
However, the one concern than I did have while I sat there in the traffic queue was that the planter (presumably metal) was sitting straight onto the concrete windowsill. This is not a good idea for a couple of reasons; firstly, as the sun shines on the concrete windowsill, it heats up and this heat is then radiated upwards (like a night storage heater) into the pot. The net result is the soil dries out very quickly, and the roots could ‘cook’. Actually, the same temperature transfer happens in winter, but this time it’s the chill that’s travelling; and cold roots are not happy roots either, believe me!
It’s an eye-opening journey around your garden, and you will be truly inspired. It’s also fun and your plants will thank you!

West led A♣ and, when dummy hit baize, declarer appreciated only that it held two aces and a doubleton heart. West followed with K♣ and then a third club, which East ruffed with 2♠. East returned K♦ and declarer relaxed - all, he felt, would be well now. He won the trick with A♦ and correctly cashed A♥, then K♥ and led 9♥ to trump in dummy (this, he must do before drawing trumps, or he will be left with a heart loser at the end of the hand). Thoughtlessly, he trumped with dummy’s 5♠ and was horrified when East over-trumped with 8♠. However, no one was sympathetic, not even his partner. West had overcalled the heart suit at the 2-level without either ace or king and South, holding the five top trumps, should undoubtedly have been aware that East could be out of hearts and must therefore lavish a little care and ruff, not low, but with dummy’s 9♠ - a card just as important as the two aces. This achieved, trumps may be draw and the contract brought home safely.

Itsy, bitsy spider...YIKES! have cleanliness issues, but because they’re desperately seeking water. And there I was, originally thinking they crawl up the plughole with the sole intention of going for my throat.
N
ow, don’t be frightened, Flossie, I said to the the long-legged house spider imagining it with blond hair and lipstick. “Come on sweetie… freedom beckons,” I carried on talking as I released it from the tub into the grass. “Off you go… break for the border!”
This is all part of the mental re-programming before the final reveal of the spiders. Britain’s co-partner is Adam Cox, a Harley street psychologist and hypnotherapist, who took us through visualisation exercises, and as 12 of us sat in the room listening to his dulcet tones, the stress eased. Like kids, we were invited to draw, colour in and name a spider. Naming REALLY helps. A furry tarantula called “baby Wookie" is a lot less threatening. You almost want to cuddle it. By the end of the day, a real Wookie was crossing my palm (though I did stop at clasping it to my bosom and tickling its chin).
No doubt, an afternoon course with Spider Courage has had a profound effect on how I now viewed the common arachnid.
Final proof it all worked was the macho tattooed lad next to me who at the beginning, shrieked at a picture. A few hours later, Wookie had him wrapped round her little leg.
I’ve never liked them. The way they scuttle haphazardly, the way they come towards you on the sofa. Too many legs…

But Spider Courage Course creator Britain Stella (who owns 57 tarantulas and a Cup for Britain’s Best In Show), explains to you, “They scuttle because the little critters are so helpless, they can only move in a haphazard way to escape predators. They come towards the sofa because the noise of the TV frightens them and they want the darkness under your legs”. Ah, so not your actual legs. then? “Think instead of their poor legs… so fragile and delicate, they are too easily broken. We should feel sorry for them”. As for Flossie mentioned earlier, I’d just saved her life. She’d been dehydrated in the house - and indeed, the reason we find spiders in the bath is not because they

any independent retailers have had a tough time in recent years. Central Kingston’s Seriously Sofas isn’t one of them. Set up by husband and wife team, Andrew and Ruth Jones in 2011, Seriously Sofas, adding Famaliving London in April 2013, has established itself as a flourishing business with a strong repeat and referral business. In 2013, they were awarded ‘Best Independent Retailer’ at the inaugural Kingston Business Excellence Awards. In 2014 Startup Awards recognised Seriously Sofas with their national award for ‘Independent Shop of the Year’. Serving trade and retail customers, Seriously Sofas offer bespoke and customised sofas, sofa beds,
corner and chaise units, modules, chairs and accessories. “We pay huge attention to the individual needs and tastes of our customers,” says Ruth Jones. “All our upholstery is made with each customer’s space, comfort, design and budget requirements in mind.” Sometimes that involves creating bespoke items. At other times it involves altering dimensions or adapting a particular model. Explains Andrew “That’s the advantage of being a true independent, partnered with outstanding suppliers, such as Fama. Our customers have come to value the creativity and flexibility of our approach.” To keep the store looking fresh there are regular sales of items off the showroom floor at a discount for
immediate delivery, anywhere in the UK as well as overseas. Ruth and Andrew don’t think of themselves as exemplars of effective independent retailing, but that’s what they’ve become. In explaining why they were given the Best Independent Retailer award, Kingston First’s Chief Executive, Ros Morgan said: “Seriously Sofas/Famaliving London stood out because they had independent business running through their veins – not just in terms of the company’s set up but actually their entire supply chain and they are a genuine ambassador of the independent sector.” seriouslysofas.co.uk 020 8549 1233
