This is the time of year when you’re sorely tempted to turn on the heating but you can’t let go of your hopes for an Indian Summer. So as the days draw in and the boxsets become more likely than the BBQs, it’s a good time to treat yourself – mind, body and soul. For the mind there’s Pam Custers’ advice on coping with back-to-school, The Really Helpful Club for great local recommendations, and Paul’s bridge tips. For the body you’ll find healers and pamperers like Thom Kirby’s hair repair, Sport Science’s family fun run and luxury skiing with Morgan Jupe. And for the soul there’s Merton Arts Trail again (and the story behind it all), Wimbledon Bookfest on the Common and concerts with the likes of blues-folk singer Melissa James and the Singology choir. Don’t miss our exclusive interview with the gorgeous Darcey Bussell and a big round of applause for Bruce’s Doggy Day Care and Cannizaro House for winning big at London Business Awards! Star Turn

Wimbledon welcomes Darcey Bussell CBE

D

arling Editor, Karine Torr, recently caught up with Darcey and discovered that she was born Marnie Mercedes Darcey Pemberton Crittle. Her illustrious ballet career started off early when, at 20 and after only a year dancing professionally at Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet, she had an opportunity to become a principal dancer at the Royal Ballet in 1989. There she remained until 2007 when she retired having performed as guest artist with other leading ballet companies such as the NYCB, the Kirov and the Australian Ballet. In 2012, Darcey was appointed the President of the Royal Academy of Dance and remains the patron of various dance companies, working with many foundations and charities. In 2012, she made a spectacular entrance as judge on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. Why did you choose Wimbledon to live in recently? I like to walk the dogs and love the greenery around the area. Living on the top of a hill with the views around is very special. Being able to enjoy the easy routes into London is very precious whilst you can still definitely have the feeling of ‘escaping the city’. How can our local kids get into ballet? There are a lot of great teachers in the vicinity. All the local ballet schools, including the famous Royal Ballet School in the middle of Richmond Park and the local theatres, attract many West End shows and touring companies like the English National Ballet School and many other performing arts schools. The Royal Academy of Dance headquarters is also based in Battersea.

Which famous dancers have you met and who inspired you the most? Margot Fonteyn was an inspiration. I was only 20 when I was working with her on Swan Lake. Also guesting with other companies always inspired me. I worked with The Paris Opera Ballet, The New York City Ballet and the Maryinsky and many others. There were inspiring teachers and dancers in all these companies. darlingmagazine.co.uk | sept–oct 2014

What do you like about being a Strictly Come Dancing judge? I have been a fan of the show for many years and I love that the programme is able to inspire so many to enjoy the experience of dance. Being a judge and having the joy of watching the professionals beside the celebrities going through their extraordinary journeys of learning all the skills from the foxtrot to a tango is inspiring. I find it very hard to sit still behind my desk and not be moving!

From dancer to author. What was the motivation to write the ‘Magic Ballerina’ children’s books? The inspiration all came from my children. It was of their own experience of coming to the theatre and watching ballet productions. It was how their minds view the magic on the stage from the lighting to the design to orchestra and the whole adventure.

Your new venture in exercise dance classes? Hopefully, before the New Year, we are trying to release DDMix as a dance fitness programme open to any age and ability. Its ethos is to be diverse, simple, fun and entertaining but to be done socially as a party. The class will have about 20 different genres of dance but very much getting the flavours of the styles in an hour long class. I am very excited about the project as I have had a wonderful time creating it with my choreographer Nathan Clarke and I look forward to it being enjoyed by many.

The Really REALLY Helpful Club

business – promo

Sarah Austin

When Darling Magazine discovered the Really Helpful Club, an online network for dynamic, like-minded women to share great ideas, helpful tips and their best recommendations, we knew our prayers had been answered!

T

he Really Helpful Club (RHC) was founded by enterprising mother and Wimbledon resident Sarah Austin a year ago. It is already an indispensible part of our local community. As Sarah explains, “RHC is all about helping one another, giving something back to the community and making our lives easier. The concept for the Club arose when I realised that I have an invaluable network at my fingertips, as do most women. I noticed that sometimes we need to go beyond our own network of friends for help. And so, the Really Helpful Club began!”

“RHC is already the very well known ‘go to’ source for our local area. Very lucky for all of us to have such a resource available to us.” Tina Stonely (Wimbledon) Word of mouth is the best and most trusted way of getting the answers you need and this is key to the RHC. Whether you’re looking for a reliable gardener or dog-walker, a wonderful caterer, a fantastic holiday destination or all those many and varied decisions that women make in our daily lives, you can rest assured you will find helpful solutions and trusted recommendations from women just like you. The RHC actively supports local businesses, entrepreneurs and charities. The Business Forum offers a unique way to reconnect with the workplace. It’s buzzing with networking and job opportunities,

aimed at women looking for a career change or to rediscover the workplace once their children have started school or flown the nest. Sarah has also launched The Little Black Book, a directory of everything you need to know. Only businesses that have been tried and tested and received positive recommendations may be invited to have a listing. Many businesses give RHC members exclusive offers too. It’s free to join, easy and friendly to use and serves a wonderful purpose. Hurry up and join the conversation! reallyhelpfulclub.com darlingmagazine.co.uk | sept–oct 2014

Homework for Parents Therapist Pam Custers on how to deal with those back-to-school blues

T

he uniforms are bought, pencil cases stuffed full and there has been a lot of talk about how exciting it will be to start school or senior school. All new situations can bring on a level of anxiety: new rules, greater homework expectations and perhaps, for younger children, separation anxiety after a wonderful long summer holiday. As parents, our constant reassurance to our children that school will be fun may in fact be adding to their anxiety. We may start noticing signs of stress. Younger children may become clingy whilst older children may start withdrawing or having difficulties sleeping. Key to making the transition back to school is to prepare children both physically and emotionally so they can make the best start in September. To counter anxiety, give as much information as possible as stress is fed by the unknown. Approaching school in a matter-of-fact way, with detailed information, will allay fears. Visit the school and talk about who you know at the school. Remind them of the nice teacher that your child met at the introductory day. Plan the morning routine together and discuss uniforms and bag packing. Find out which extracurricular activities your child may like to do at school. You may be surprised at how talking about some of the small things can alleviate the stress. It is also important to get ready on a physical level. Routines may have become relaxed. Gently getting life back to a school-time routine before school starts is a good idea.

School is exhausting, particularly the first couple of weeks when adjustments are being made. Sufficient sleep is important for all age groups so negotiating screen time can also be a good idea. Remind your child of all their achievements, whether at making friends, joining a sports team or pointing out how adaptable they have been whilst going on holiday. Highlighting their successes and drawing parallels to school life will give your children a sense of excitement about the upcoming school year. Most importantly, they will feel confident enough to tackle whatever 2014-15 will throw at them. Pam Custers has extensive experience and has a private practice in Wimbledon. She works with individuals, couples and families. 07572 841 388 | pam@pamcusters.co.uk darlingmagazine.co.uk | sept–oct 2014

TRAILBLAZERS

Merton honours our arts pioneers

W

e knew that we were onto something back in 2009 when we first pitched the idea of an arts festival here in the heart of South West London,” explains Wendy Bliss, Co-founder of Merton Arts Trail, whose background includes working in the fashion business for designers Bill Gibb & Zandra Rhodes before studying art & design at Central St Martins and Wimbledon School of Art .

“Nothing existed here back then, and we have really grown legs and tentacles and, most importantly, visitor numbers since that first year!” And now, for the Wendy Bliss and Chrissie Craig last two weekends of each September, SW19 becomes synonymous with the arts rather than tennis, and visitors are invited into studios, homes, shops and some unusual and quirky locations to see the work of new and emerging artists. MAT is the brain child of Wimbledon residents Wendy Bliss and Chrissie Craig who are chums and arts enthusiasts with bundles of passion and entrepreneurship – and, unsurprisingly, winners of a 2014 Merton Civic Award. Chrissie also has a very useful background in advertising, marketing, publishing and was ex-managing editor of a Reader’s Digest imprint. She does her silkscreen printing at Putney Art School. This year’s highlights include a Mystery Movie in an exclusive location on 20th September; the introduction of the ‘Hub’ in Wimbledon Library, where visitors can preview the work on show; and a bulging catalogue featuring the greatest number of artists yet. Wendy and Chrissie would be delighted to see you at MAT this September – do not miss out! | mertonartstrail.org.uk darlingmagazine.co.uk | sept–oct 2014

A PAIN IN THE NECK? Darling chats to Harley Jaffar, local osteopath and owner of The Wimbledon Village Osteopath How did you get started Harley? My passion for osteopathy started after injuring my back during a game of rugby in my early twenties and finding the most effective treatment for it was from an osteopath. What I love about being an osteopath is going through the intellectual process of establishing the root cause of the problem and then being able to treat it directly with a practical, ‘hands on’ approach. One of the great aspects of my career is meeting and treating such a diverse range of people. In the last month, my patients have included pregnant women, builders, those going through treatment for cancer, numerous office workers with pain and stiffness resulting from long periods in front of a computer, as well as a World Junior Tennis Champion who was playing at Wimbledon. I see a very broad age range: from schoolchildren, some as young as four years old, to patients in their eighties and nineties, and everything inbetween.

What sort of training is involved? In the UK, osteopaths are registered members of the General Osteopathic Council and membership requires a minimum

of four years’ intensive training to degree level. By looking at the whole body and using manual methods of diagnosis and treatment, we aim to reduce pain, improve movement and enable patients to achieve a better state of health. There are two osteopaths at the clinic, myself and Lazarus Nono. Lazarus has been teaching at the British College of Osteopathic Medicine for the last 13 years and is just about to complete his master’s degree in Performing Arts Medicine.

What else does the clinic offer? I am extremely fortunate in having a great team of therapists working with me at my clinic who are trained in a variety of disciplines. Sing Sing Yu and Brett Drinkwater offer Chinese Medicine, specialising in fertility consultations. Jamie Chalmers, national award-winning masseur and reflexologist, is also qualified in Ayurvedic health having studied in India. Mariko Lavender-Jones offers yoga therapy; Janice Everitt, our homeopath, has a special interest in paediatric allergies and Giselle Smith provides sports massage. We also have Hilary O’Neill, Elisa Cunial Trotta, Bella Tebbs, Linda Baker, Sue Ross and Jonathan Hoban, all offering various forms of counselling.

Although we only opened our doors in December 2013, already nearly half of our new patients have come to us via word of mouth. This is something for which I am very grateful. 20% off all new osteopathy bookings until end of October 2014

JAZZ UP YOUR AUTUMN COLOUR Turn over a new leaf at Thom Kirby

W

ith the glorious summer days now coming to an end, it is time to take stock of any hair damage and discolouration that may have been caused by those long, languid hours basking in the sun. With that thought in mind, our key words will be REJUVINATE and REFRESH!! Sunshine can be an uplifting experience for many; it darkens our skin and lightens our hair and generally imparts a feeling of wellbeing. Trying to maintain the effects of sun-lightened hair can be a tricky one so Victoria, at Thom Kirby, would like to invite you for a free colour consultation to discuss your options. This service could take the form of rejuvenating and refreshing your existing colour to its former glory, or enhancing some of nature’s handiwork, with some subtle toning or shading. However, before embarking on a restorative colour journey, we would like to ensure that your hair and, in some cases scalp, is in tip-top condition. Thom Kirby is therefore happy to have introduced the PHYTO hair care range to our list of services. This range is over 90% plant based and addresses many of the hair and scalp issues common today, for example, dry/itchy, flaky scalp or chemically/sun damaged hair.

So with seasonal changes perhaps it’s time to consider refreshing your approach to hair care and style. Is your cut working for you? Is your colour bold or subtle enough? Are you sending out the right message? These are the most relevant questions we should consider asking ourselves when approaching our hair. Wimbledon-sur-Alpes SW19 hospitality in the heart of France

L

ocal couple Jess Hitchen & Josh Morgan talk to Darling about their passion for fine food, wine and the slopes of Morzine.

Jess: Our aim is to provide our guests with an absolutely flawless experience from start to finish. Skiing has been a huge part of our lives and our personal experiences have given us firsthand insight into what a chalet holiday should be all about! At Morgan Jupe we create a relaxing and luxurious environment that makes each one of our guests feel completely pampered and very much at home. We are foodies through and through and pride ourselves on creating memorable, gastronomic experiences. We are pushing culinary boundaries with new techniques but maintain balance to meet guests’ expectations of a comforting chalet menu. Our wine list is filled with wines that we’ve personally sourced from small, passionate, French producers and in our opinion it’s the best, most carefully selected list of any catered chalet. Jess was born and raised in Wimbledon; she’s well known amongst the locals having worked and socialised at a number

of the finer establishments in the Village. She enjoys being part of a close community and finds similar pleasures in Morzine. She learnt the values of customer service from her grandfather, a talented restaurateur, and brings that knowledge to Morgan Jupe - a venture that combines her greatest passions. Josh’s history in France dates back to 1991, when his family bought a holiday home in Brittany. He feels a strong tie with the country’s language, food and more recently its wine. He’s lived and worked in the French and Swiss Alps since 2008; first as a ski instructor, then a chalet chef; now he brings these skills and his enthusiasm for everything Alpine to Morgan Jupe. Josh: Our opening winter seasons have proved very successful with a near perfect rate of return amongst clients. We are delighted to have been highly commended as “Best UK Specialist Operator” by the Telegraph Ski & Snowboard Magazine last year and we’re hoping to win “Best UK Chalet Company” at this year’s awards! We’re excited to be offering a new chalet in our portfolio and we’re very much looking forward to welcoming all of our guests to Morzine this winter. morganjupe.com darlingmagazine.co.uk | sept–oct 2014

You’re (Not) Fired Helena Woodward-Vukcevic of Hart Brown explains the new settlement legislation

L

ast July we saw the introduction of settlement agreements. These renamed, simplified versions of the compromise agreement were part of the government’s reforms to employment law. The intention was that the settlement agreement would make it far easier for an employer to propose a mutual end to the employment relationship. An employer is now able to consult with an underperforming or difficult employee bypassing their formal lengthier disciplinary or capability procedures. If the employee accepts the offer made, it can result in a far quicker and in certain circumstances, more amicable departure. Prior to the new rules, if an employer discussed ending an employee’s employment without going through the correct process or procedures they would risk a potential constructive dismissal claim on the grounds of a breach of trust and confidence (providing of course, that the employee had the necessary length of service). Now, any offer or discussion of a proposed settlement started by an employer cannot be used or referred to in employment

Helena WoodwardVukcevic

tribunal proceedings, unless the employer was guilty of discrimination. To avoid any potential pitfalls, an employer should always obtain advice prior to having a “without prejudice” discussion where a settlement agreement will be offered. The settlement agreement really works best where the employee also wishes to move on, or would be prepared to do so in exchange for a payment compensating them sufficiently until they are able to find a new job. What can be more problematic are situations where the employee clearly does not want to leave. Concerns about being unable to find new employment in a poor job market often mean that an employee may be very reluctant to agree to anything unless they can negotiate a particularly good deal. An employee should never be forced to enter into a settlement agreement. However, it can often be difficult to carry on as usual after such discussions have taken place. This is particularly so in circumstances where an employee might face going through the more time-consuming redundancy or capability procedures instead.

The employee should always obtain independent advice on receipt of a proposed settlement agreement. This is so that they are fully aware of the options available to them, the potential claims they may have against their employer or any other grounds for negotiating the best possible settlement. For more information contact Helena Woodward-Vukcevic on 0208 947 8171 or email employment@hartbrown.co.uk

Autumn’s hotting up Kirsty McMorron brings home the season’s most exciting designs

A

fter a relaxing summer, September and October are about getting back in the thick of it – both at work and at play. This time of year brings us Paris Design Week closely followed by London Design Festival. So in the world of design it’s hectic. Since I’m fortunate to be able to visit both events, I can’t wait to bring back the most beautiful products to your home-from-home in Raynes Park, absolute abode. You might even spot some of our range in magazines or online. But here you get a chance to see and touch them. September’s also the time when fabric and wallpaper houses launch their new collections, and we’ll choose the most fabulous to showcase in store. What we’re already seeing this Autumn are monochrome colourways, geometric forms and bold, bold statements. Dark, luxurious interiors are trending. And if, like me, you like to entertain as the nights grow longer, now’s the time to get cracking. Whatever the time of year, if you’re ordering furniture from around the world, allow eight to ten weeks for delivery. As usual, you can engage our team to consult, and we’ll do our best to expedite design solutions for you in time for Christmas. So that could be one less thing to worry about. But thanks to those Autumn collections, we have plenty in store which you can snap up in plenty of time for the party season. You’ll also find plenty of must have gifts, including the sort of gift you simply must-have for yourself. Happy Autumn!

What Do Women Want ? They say it’s something between conversation and chocolate. But when it comes to living spaces, they’re much more particular

O

r so says Paul Bryan, Darling’s expert builder: With housing prices where they are and the relaxation in planning, what better time to embark on an extension and achieve what you want? • An open-plan kitchen/diner • A family room opening out to the garden through bi-fold doors • An additional bedroom, dressing room and en-suite • That new kitchen with work surface aplenty • Heated floors throughout below the wooden lookalike tiles • Natural light beaming into your living area • Create the inside-outside feeling we all would love

‘With the relaxation in planning, what better time to achieve what you want?’ It is important to know how you can achieve what you want and what is permitted in the borough and what is not. “Permitted development” can be used to increase the size of your house without going down the planning route. Two useful links are below which can guide you on what you will be able to add on to create your dream home be it at roof level or on the ground and first floors: http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/ commonprojects/extensions/extensions http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/ commonprojects/loftconversion/

Haven Construction can help you achieve this new space and satisfy that desire to get what you want! We will guide you through the permitted development/planning process, producing the architectural drawings, structural engineer’s calculations and building regulation drawings. Once this is achieved, we will build what you have always wanted out of your home, within an agreed time period and to a fixed and agreed price. Take the leap, see your home’s potential and create your dream. Addicted to German Quality Local residents, Mr & Mrs Bischoff, tell us how important it was to find a German quality kitchen after moving to their new home

What prompted you to redesign your kitchen? We moved into our new house, the existing kitchen was not fit for purpose anymore so we needed a new one and that made us go for a complete new kitchen. What did you think about the Schmidt showroom? It was quite impressive! There was a lot of variety and it was great to see some new ideas that we hadn’t seen elsewhere. We saw most of the available portfolio and that was very helpful for us. What made you choose Schmidt as your kitchen supplier? We quickly decided once we came to the showroom and had the initial interview. That was very convincing and we decided to give it a shot! Can you give us an idea of what kind of house you live in, just so we can picture it? It is a late twenties detached house located in a quiet cul-desac. This house is very spacious with the kitchen going into the

dining room. The dining room has large windows allowing a lot of light into the room so that directly impacted our colour selection. What are you most pleased about with your new kitchen? It is very practical for cooking, very functional and very easy to clean. The units provide a lot of storage space and it looks good on top of that! The kitchen is very practical and we like the interaction with the dining room. The return with the breakfast bar makes it a very social space; you can sit, drink and cook all together. What is your experience of the service at Schmidt and would you recommend the service? I think the whole service was good, we are happy with what we have and we have already recommended Schmidt to our friends! schmidt-wimbledon.com 020 3617 8715

hy everyone needs a Personal Concierge: Concierges have been around in one form or another for centuries, but the Personal Concierge burst onto the scene only in the late 1990s. Today, more people than ever have less time for every-day tasks, whether that’s at home or work, and many of them rely on Personal Concierges to run their lives. Who can organise your lawn to be mowed, take the dog to be groomed, pick up your dry cleaning and still be able to get you a table at one of London’s top restaurants, secure a ticket at a sold out event and organise a top-level business trip or holiday abroad? It’s no wonder that Personal Concierges are now thought of as Lifestyle Management Consultants but whatever the name, what they can offer over the services offered through American

Express or banks, is they will know what your dog’s called, what table you like at that restaurant and your airline seat preference and special requests! For more information, contact Jo Hall at WPA on 07984 332272 jo@wimbledonpa.co.uk or visit www.wimbledonpa.co.uk

re buyers less than charmed by your period cottage despite it being just a stone’s throw from the Common? Is your Wimbledon Hill Road penthouse failing to impress viewers despite it being window shopping distance from Elys? For many of us, the perfect property remains hard to find due to the lack of available stock on the market. Yet, many home owners are struggling to sell their properties to buyers who find it hard to look beyond dodgy wallpaper or awkward room layouts. Local property agents, andrew scott robertson have launched a unique new service that will help you sell your home’s potential not just your home. Head of Residential Sales, Steve Parsons, explains “Before marketing your house, we can arrange for our partner firm, Potential etc. to draw up a set of design schemes in the form of artistic perspective sketches and proposed floor plans to showcase your home’s potential to prospective buyers. These plans can then be used as a marketing tool to enable buyers to invest

in the vision for your home rather than just the property as it stands. By doing this, the property is opened up to a much wider audience and this will help you achieve the best possible price.”

“We offer expert advice backed by over 150 years’ experience” The name andrew scott robertson is backed by a heritage going back 150 years, merging Andrews and Robertson, one of the UK’s leading

independent property auctioneers and surveyors with Quinton Scott, Chartered Surveyors and Estate Agents, whose practice has operated from Wimbledon for nearly 40 years. So if your Parkside pad is a little commoner than you’d like or your First Way George Blay isn’t as grand as it could be, give us a call today and let us help you realise your home’s potential. North-South bid confidently to their 4♠ game contract and West led top-of-a-sequence K♥. East can deduce that West holds KQ♥ and probably J♥. These cards, together with East’s two aces, seem to account for all the high cards which East-West hold. East must plan to make four tricks to defeat the contract, but what can they be? Two hearts tricks and A♦ are easy to make but, for a fourth trick, East will need to trump a diamond. How can that be achieved before declarer draws trumps? The solution is entirely in East’s hands and is really rather beautiful: East overtakes West’s K♥ with her A♥ and cashes A♦. She then returns a heart to West. On winning, West must conclude that for East to play her A♦ is the action either of a mad-woman, or of a player with only one diamond. Assuming that she trusts her partner, West therefore plays another diamond and East trumps. Contract defeated. aceoftrumps.com

Remember You’re a Womble By Kate Greenhalgh

T

he family’s a bit weary of my ‘Welsh’ shtick. I bang on about Dylan Thomas, and take them on holidays to visit Methodist graveyards. I bend their ears about how Gareth Bale would have made all the difference in the World Cup if only we fielded a Welsh-English team. (Why not? We share a Premier League, unlike Scotland. We missed out on Ryan Giggs, too. Better together!) But Glastonbury this summer is where I over-stepped the Welshiness and got my comeuppance. To keep the family vaguely together in a horde of 175,000 party-goers, I persuaded the tireless Tim to carry a 10 meter high daffodil at all times, regardless of the puerile innuendo he might suffer. Such a handy way of finding each other in a crowded area covering 900 muddy acres! Try it! But think it through, Kate, think it through. You’re at a music festival with a notably druidical vibe, a few miles from the Welsh border, escorted by a man carrying a giant daffodil. As more and more 46

people clustered around us, I jokily shouted, “Sorry – Welsh folk only by the daffodil!” And they all cried back, “But we ARE Welsh!” Never mind “Follow the Gourd” – we soon became surrounded by a vast following of loved-up, beery Welsh people, (not knocking that – been there) all using the daffodil as a patriotic totem/meeting point. As one of them, I can say that the Welsh tend to be both short and emotional, so understandably get easily lost in crowds and latch onto compatriots warmly. In the end, when a group from Port Talbot came up to start hugging us, I felt like screaming, “Go away! I’m not Welsh!” (“HOW shall we go away?” they probably would have replied.) Tim, meanwhile, was feeling the love, and high-fiving some bikers from Pontypridd, which was not helpful. It suddenly started to feel like a scene from a Hitchcock movie – Welsh people perched everywhere, zany camera angles and menacing discordant music; although that might have been lack of sleep and Metallica to blame. In the distance, we spotted a pole with

a Womble on the end, and felt a stab of homesickness. If it hadn’t been for the blasted daffodil, we’d have scurried over and clustered round, feeling the love, the sweet, sweet love of Home.
