I’m so proud to have been able to talk to my childhood heroine, the inspiring, gorgeous, Chris Evert who’s on our cover this issue. It’s the time of year when Wimbledon puts on her fabulous best. I

t was a great thrill to chat to Chris Evert.

As a young junior I was obsessed with tennis, playing many of the local provincial tennis tournaments in and around Johannesburg. It was an exciting time and Johannesburg even hosted The South African Open in 1973 at Ellis Park Tennis Stadium, the year Chris Evert won the Women’s Singles title and we got to witness her lethal game and beautiful dresses, complete with frilly tennis pants (which became all the rage), live and in Technicolor. What a thrill, then, to be able to chat to her after all these years!

unfortunately I had Martina Navratilova (probably the greatest female grass court tennis player of all time) competing at the same time as me, so that was a real challenge. A highlight though, was playing in front of Princess Diana and the chance to even have tea with her, which was a really exciting for me at the time.

DM: Favourite Wimbledon haunts in the summer?

CE: I love food, so mostly go to the great restaurants, traditionally San Lorenzo, which I used to go to when I was playing on the circuit.

DM: You are very glamorous, any beauty tips?

DM: What achievement are you most proud of?

CE: I don’t tend to think about it, haha! But if I had to say, I’m probably most proud that I have the best percentage win to loss ratio, close to 90%. And the clay court record overall, also winning 125 matches in a row are all accomplishments that are very special to me.

DM: How have you juggled kids/family and a career?

CE: I’ve had a busy life but it’s never been overwhelming. I had my tennis career when I just thought about myself. At 34 when I retired I got

CE: I’m a real ‘brows’ person. I feel like I’ve really gotten into the importance of eyebrows lately.

They really frame the face and women should pay more attention to them. I do know a few tennis players that have gotten into the semi-permanent eyebrows now. My beauty routine: wash, moisturize and a sunscreen tint that puts a little colour on my face, but still protects it from the sun. I also like exfoliating bath gloves - use them every day, especially after sweating and sunscreen.

DM: What are your guilty pleasures?

CE: Massages, lots of them! A glass of red wine at night and I love reading a good book, now that I have more down time. I just finished ‘Dead Letters’

by Caite Dolan-Leach and have ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, ‘Into the Water’ and ‘The Girl on the Train’ on my desk. Watching a good series has become a major addiction. I’ve seen them all! ‘Big Little Lies’, that was good - also ‘Blacklist’ and ‘Ray Donovan’ are great. Not so guilty but as far as hobbies go, in the summer I live in Aspen and do a lot of hiking, rock-climbing and yoga too.

When tennis superstar Chris Evert signed with Italian sportswear label Ellesse in 1979 it was the start of a new era of women’s tennis fashion and a new type of relationship between athletes and big brands. Evert, who had already won two of her three Wimbledon singles titles by then, became a globe-trotting model and ambassador for a brand whose signature look combined bright colours with simple, functional designs. If you were lucky enough to be around during the years when Chris was playing, it is likely you still recall her as she looked throughout the 1980s, the last decade of her career, wearing a simple Ellesse skirt and vest combination.

The Ellesse brand had been founded in 1959 “on a dream of creating the world’s most stylish sportswear brand.” This sort of marketing-speak is commonplace today, but back then sports apparel and footwear had been largely functional rather than fashionable, and clothing for woman players had either been of the simple two-piece shirt and shorts variety or bespoke dresses made by famous designers such as Jean Patou, who designed for Suzanne Lenglen, Coco Chanel and Teddy Tinling. The latter, incidentally, went on to design Chris Evert’s dress for her wedding to John Lloyd in 1979.

omen’s tennis fashion has come a long way from the wide-brimmed hats, long skirts and matronly aprons worn by the Wimbledon champions of the Victorian era. Starting with Suzanne Lenglen’s daring knee-length skirts and bare arms in the 1920s, tennis has become the launch-pad for fashion innovation, with new fabrics and ever-more practical (some would say

The first colour TV outside broadcast from Wimbledon in 1967 had triggered a worldwide tennis boom, and as millions of new fans switched onto the sport during the 1970s it became big business, particularly in the US. Even before Chris Evert had signed her contract with Ellesse she had had her own range of tennis clothing for eight years, designed by Puritan Fashions of New York. Ellesse was one of the first companies to signal the change towards sportswear becoming leisurewear, even for those who had never swung a tennis racquet in their life.

During the 1980s and 90s, players became closely associated with the clothes they wore and the companies which made them. Martina Navratilova was the embodiment of the Puma brand, whilst German rival Adidas was synonymous with the power and athleticism of Steffi Graf. With Martina’s fantastic career drawing to a close, the company signed Serena Williams and the high-water mark in their relationship came when the younger of the Williams sisters attracted enormous publicity by wearing a figure-hugging black catsuit at the 2002 US Open. Sister Venus, meanwhile, wore Reebok apparel before creating her own “EleVen” brand in 2007. “The whole philosophy of EleVen is about overcoming adversity and triumphing over anything while looking fashionable doing it,” said the five-time Wimbledon singles champion.

The modern professional tennis player is a supremely-fit athlete, and as far as clothing is concerned functionality now comes firmly ahead of appearance. One wonders what the early Wimbledon champions in their voluminous ankle-length skirts would have made of it all!

In the same year that Serena was stunning the New York crowds in her black catsuit, Russia’s Anna Kournikova was pictured at the Miami Open wearing an Adidas creation consisting of short shorts and a stretch bra. According to reports at the time (2002), “her sexy glamour did wonders for Adidas way beyond the tennis courts.”

Since the year 2000, even the most glamorous tennis players have become little more than clothes-horses in the never-ending battle between the two superpowers of tennis apparel, Adidas and Nike. New ranges are produced for the Australian Open, French Open, US Open and Wimbledon Championships each year, many of which never reach high street sports stores.

The Annual DRAGONBOAT Racing Is Back!

T

his year’s Dragonboat Racing event will be held on Sunday, 18th June at 12pm on Wimbledon Park Lake raising money for local charity Momentum, which supports children and their families facing cancer or other life-limiting conditions.

Dragonboat Racing is huge fun and no experience is required. Everyone aged 10 and over can race, with 10 paddlers and 1 drummer in a team. There will be lots of other entertainment for younger children too. Anyone interested in taking part can either book an entire team or contact us directly to join in with another Dragonboat. All kit and safety equipment is provided.

There will be plenty going on for supporters and families as well as for the teams in between their races.

I

n March I launched a new fashion label Jennifer Anne.

Nothing special you might think, new brands come to the market all the time. Well, it was pretty special: very unusually, this is a brand designed exclusively for petite women, not just an add-on to a larger brand. Coupled with that, I was a lawyer with no background in the fashion industry.

As a petite woman of 5’1”, I have struggled to find clothes in the UK that fit me. It is not just a question of length but rather the waist sits in the wrong place, the shoulders are too wide and often the amount of Jenny Ison left with model material simply swamps me. I knew that I was not alone in this and petite friends (as well as my mother!) would often make similar complaints.

So the idea began to take root and being a lawyer I did a lot of research before taking the plunge and actually putting my first collection together. An exciting journey indeed.

So what is petite? Petite does not simply mean small and slim, it is rather a question of height. Our collection is for women of 5’ 3” (160cm) and under.

In other words, a size 12 in Jennifer Anne will be cut for a woman the same height as for a size 6, but with more generous measurements for bust, waist and hip.

Jennifer Anne clothes are designed from the very start with the petite woman in mind. Petite clothes in other brands are more often suited for skinny young girls/women, or can be quite frumpy. Our collection contains clothes made with beautiful fabrics and is for grown-up, sophisticated women who want to look tailored and elegant.

We are currently only available on-line but if you live locally we will come (for a small fee deductible against purchases) to your house/work place with a selection so that you can try them on before deciding which ones to buy.

Burn Out! Are you ‘over-giving’? asks Pam Custers

T

o be a good mother, partner, friend or work mate we have to give, right?

We don’t just give a little, we just keep giving, and for many it’s a mark of a good person. “It’s better to give than receive” as the adage goes. As women we can be particularly bad at receiving.

There is no surprise that the emotional bank that gives but takes no deposits simply runs dry. I come across this on a daily basis where we “over-give”, and become emotionally and physically drained. We honestly find it hard to give ourselves permission to receive. The “having it all” mantra and being an overachieving superwoman is addictive. Over-working ourselves into a state of emotional and physical exhaustion is simply not smart. It sets up a catalogue of self destructive fallout.

Giving to others is a good and loving act but giving of ourselves to the point of sacrificing our own happiness, health and wealth is not loving or healthy So how can we shift our internal mindset to enable us to take care of our loved ones, do the work we love and take care of ourselves too? One simple way is to embrace a slightly new take on life: “It’s better to give AND receive”. If we give ourselves the time and energy that feeds our soul we can get off the track of self sabotage and burn out. Perhaps you are ready to start putting back into your emotional bank and rediscover who you are in this world.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE Elaine Halligan’s tips for strong mental health

T

oday the shocking reality is that 1 in 10 of our children will experience some sort of mental health issue ranging from anxiety to addiction, eating disorders, self-harm or depression, with children as young as eight being treated. The impact on the child, and also on friends, families, teachers and carers, can be devastating. The need to talk about this has never been greater.

Why does it happen?

This is complex. Some reasons include: • Children are subject to much stress around school performance, where unless they get 10 A*s they can perceive themselves as a failure. All the A*s in the world amount to nothing unless your child has a strong sense of self-worth and a good emotional IQ. • Overscheduling can be crippling, resulting in a pace of life that’s too fast and damaging our children’s ability to just be kids.

• Parents are too risk-averse. If we don’t allow our kids to make mistakes we inadvertently pass on our anxieties.

Here are four top strategies for parents: 1. Be an emotion coach for your child. This means recognising, respecting and reflecting back to children the feelings they experience. Naming their feelings helps them to make connections between their logical higher brain and the emotional limbic system. Children need to be able to recognise that they’re feeling sad so that they can seek solace in a healthy way or to get help. They need to understand what is making them irritated and find constructive ways of dealing with that so that they don’t take it out on others. They need to recognise worry and its purpose and they need to be able to put their worries into perspective.

2. Connect during regular family meals. Don’t let your tween/teen eat alone at their desks in their bedroom and text you whilst in the house!

3. Praise your child descriptively and credibly to build strong self-esteem.

4. Make failure acceptable by modelling a healthy attitude to your own mistakes and by focusing more on your children’s efforts than their achievements.

COOK’S CORNER Spicy BBQ Leg of Lamb with a Carrot and Cumin Salad

This summer’s family treat, a delicious BBQ Lamb recipe. Sunny days – BBQ DAYS!

Ingredients for Spiced Leg of Lamb • 3 sticks lemon grass • 5 cm piece fresh root ginger, peeled & chopped • 5 cloves garlic, peeled & chopped • 6 lime leaves • 1 good pinch ground cumin • Zest and juice of one lemon • sea salt • cracked black pepper • 1 leg of lamb, boned & butter-flied Method Light the BBQ, ensuring you have plenty of coal.

Prepare your marinade: Peel and chop the ginger and garlic. Cut the Lemongrass in half, lengthways and then add the lime leaves. Grate 1 lemon and collect the zest, and squeeze its juice, then add the cumin.

Season your lamb with salt and cracked black pepper. Then rub your meat with the marinade and leave to rest for at least 3 hours.

Once the lamb has marinated place it on the BBQ, fat side down, and cook for 5 minutes until it has browned. Flip it and cook for a further 5 minutes to sear the other side.

Move the coals to the side of the BBQ to reduce the heat under the meat and cook steadily for 30-40 minutes, turning so it does not burn. Cook the meat for this long to achieve rare, pink meat.

Remove from the BBQ and wrap in foil, and let it rest for 15 minutes.

Carrot and Cumin Salad A refreshing salad that will complement the lamb and bring the plate alive with the taste of summer.

Ingredients • 2 tsp Cumin Seed, toasted • Zest and Juice of 1 lemon • 5cm long piece of ginger grated

• 5tbsp Olive Oil • 3 Shallots, very finely sliced • 5 carrots grated • Small bunch of coriander, chopped • Small bunch of mint, chopped.

Method Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and season to taste.

She was sent home without pay for not complying with the dress code to wear high heels of between two and four inches.

Rather than bring a tribunal claim for unfair or discriminatory treatment she decided to start a petition calling for the law to be changed.

Ms Thorp set up a petition on the Government website, calling for it to be illegal for employers to require female staff to wear high heels at work. The petition was successful in obtaining more than 150,000 signatures over 6 months. shop local

As a result of this petition the House of Commons Petitions Committee and the Women and Equalities Committee have recently published in January of this year a joint report “High heels and workplace dress codes.” The Committee undertook an inquiry and heard evidence from Ms Thorp and others.

The report concludes that employers who require women to wear high heels at work are “seriously failing in their duties towards their employees” and could be causing damage to their health.

The government published its response to this report on 20th April 2017. Despite the introduction stating that the government will work to ensure women are not held back in the workplace by outdated attitudes and practices, the government has rejected any recommendations for the law to be changed. Instead they are supporting an approach based on more detailed guidance and awareness campaigns with the help of organisations such as ACAS.

Advice for employers on creating an effective dress code • Implement a dress code which is appropriate to your business while making it fair for both men and women (for example British Airways have recently allowed female cabin crew to wear trousers after a dispute in 2016).

• Don’t apply a dress code rigidly because there may be a good reason why certain people are unable to comply.

• Communicate to all your employees the reason why you are introducing a dress code – there may be a health and safety reason for why people need to wear certain clothing.

• Review the dress code regularly taking into account the perceived needs of workers.

• Distinguish between front office staff and back office roles.

When you’re selling your house, setting a realistic asking price is essential, explains Director of Residential at Andrew Scott Robertson, Stephen Parsons

H

aving spent as long as I have in the industry, I regularly encounter clients who are frustrated that their properties are not receiving offers or who believe their properties are worth more than they have been valued at. So how do estate agents determine what your house is worth?

Any good estate agent will tell you that determining a property’s value cannot just be about a gut feeling. Whilst it is not an exact science, proper research is essential. Various factors affect the eventual sale price, including local and national trends, supply and demand, the availability of finance and location. My advice has always been that a Guide Price within 5% of the perceived real value is sufficient as a buffer to ensure that the seller achieves the best possible price. Anything beyond 5% typically puts off the very people that you are trying to attract.

Pitching the price right As a seller, it is easy to accept lavish praise about your property and a high valuation by a confident agent. This is a false economy however, and the mistake of pitching your selling price too high will be evident in the period of silence which ensues, when the property does not attract any viewings. In a difficult market, this may also result in you selling at a lower price later on.

A good agent should provide you with a range of figures taking into account the market conditions, and back these up with comparable

evidence. Any agent that is advising you without this, may convince you that they are a master of the dark arts of valuing, but the chances are that their interests are simply not aligned with yours!

West led A♣ and, when dummy hit baize, declarer appreciated only that it held two aces and a doubleton heart. West followed with K♣ and then a third club, which East ruffed with 2♠. East returned K♦ and declarer relaxed - all, he felt, would be well now. He won the trick with A♦ and correctly cashed A♥, then K♥ and led 9♥ to trump in dummy (this, he must do before drawing trumps, or he will be left with a heart loser at the end of the hand).

Thoughtlessly, he trumped with dummy’s 5♠ and was horrified when East over-trumped with 8♠.

However, no one was sympathetic, not even his partner. West had overcalled the heart suit at the 2-level without either ace or king and South, holding the five top trumps, should undoubtedly have been aware that East could be out of hearts and must therefore lavish a little care and ruff, not low, but with dummy’s 9♠ - a card just as important as the two aces. This achieved, trumps may be draw and the contract brought home safely.

imbledon’s most anticipated summer event is back! The Wimbledon Guild Village Fair returns to Wimbledon Common on Saturday June 17. And last year’s star attraction, The Knights of Middle England, return to thrill visitors with an incredible jousting display. Fair organisers, Wimbledon Guild, have lined up an exciting programme for the best family day out in the local calendar.

A

t last! We can all look forward to our holidays, guzzling Rosé on some terrace overlooking the sea, listening to Justin Bieber on Spotify. Bliss! Of course, as an austere person, I prefer a walkingtour of Derbyshire, but I’m always happy to toast any holiday sunset that’s not rained off, and raise a dram of locally brewed hooch.

To be honest though, I did only recently end a long abstention from Gin. An early student encounter with it, when I misjudged quantities quite badly, put it on the ‘tipple non grata’ list for the next twenty years. Then I gave it another go on holiday in Mallorca, with a riotous Wimbledon neighbour whose attitude to gin and tonic can best be described as ‘enthusiastic’.

Inexplicably, the same quantitative inaccuracy occurred. The terrible aftermath was magnified by a boat trip in gale force winds the next day. Acute seasickness and a Code Red hangover battled for supremacy in the nausea stakes. Nobody was a winner, especially not me. And actually, when you’re lying in a slick of bilious perspiration and the rejected contents of your own stomach, it’s not helpful to have the skipper of the boat angrily flapping a plastic carrier bag in your face.

After that experience, you’d have a better chance of persuading me to drink a caustic soda and tonic than touch GIN.

It’s not as if we haven’t been warned - mums in Hogarth’s ‘Gin Lane’ blithely dropping infants from fatal heights, sozzled suburbanites in ‘70’s sitcoms - these are gin-soaked stereotypes we decent folk recoil from. ‘This is not me!’ (Yet.) Then last summer, on a Pintxo tour of San Sebastian, we feasted on barnacles, trotters, mini tortillas and small glasses of young white wine poured from a height for extra fun. It ended with our Basque guide’s suggestion to top it all off with the traditional midnight digestif, ‘Gin Tonic’. Revelation. Great idea. Try it!

Gin is hip now, too. It’s all craft this and micro that; mellow notes and liquorice finish. There are groovy gin bars galore. Even tonic is trendy.

Surely indeed, there’s nothing so cool as a drop of the old Mother’s Ruin - the crystalline twinkle, the snap in the nose of juniper, lemon and quinine, the bracing crack and fizz of cold tonic hitting ice - AAAAH welcome back old friend!

All has been well. The trick is in how you mix it. One unit of gin for every 6 months or so. If only I’d known...
