It wasn’t a conscious plan, and it wasn’t the daffodils glowing and fading so fleetingly outside my window, but when I pulled together all the inspiring and heart-warming stories I’d collected for this issue of Darling, I realised they were all about transformation of one kind or another. How to deal with the change of life (thank you Inspiring Woman of Wimbledon, Jennie Allen, page 5, or Jane Burns’s incredible life, page 41, therapist Pam Custers, page 13 and our health practitioners dealing with menopausal symptoms, page 23), how to protect your loved ones when the inevitable happens, page 32 (thank you Hart Brown), and how the advance of new technology (the incredible Equicise mechanical horse at the Village Stables, page 38 and the amazing virtual reality spinning room at David Lloyd, page 31!) seems only to reaffirm the unchanging essence of the neighbourhood we hold so dear. Also check out Lady Wimbledon’s new What’s Hot, What’s Not column, page 27, where we’re running a fab Ely’s competition. So with lots of exciting events for the kids too, like The Family Day in Wimbledon Village on the 1st May, Dragonboat Racing on 12th June and ‘Walk to School Week’ 16th – 22nd May along with 400 000 other children and Open Studios 12th May on, we have a fantastic run up to summer to look forward to!

Iconic Bayley & Sage Karine Torr chats to Jennie Allen
I
n an earlier life, I was MD of Cullen’s Food Stores. There had been one in the village (now The Light House on Ridgeway), and I was aware that Mange Tout in Wimbledon Village was for sale. I bought the business in October 1997, refitted it and renamed it Bayley & Sage in the December and never looked back! When I look at photos of it now, I cannot believe how much it has changed, the store, the products, the people, but still some of the same customers. People often ask how I came by the name. Bayley & Sage is in fact named partly after the son of a friend, as an homage to the next generation. I combined this with sage as reference to both the herb, and wisdom, before I knew it Bayley & Sage was here! My friend mentioned to me recently that her son, Bayley, had just turned 20. “No way “, I thought. But yes, it will be 19 years this autumn since the store opened.
‘I am now reduced to wandering into the cheese areas and sniffing!’
We sell unprocessed fresh food and I am passionate about good food being an important part of good health. Over the years we have developed relationships with some incredible suppliers and we even have some that have been with us since day one. I think product development and product sourcing is the fun part of the job, along with chatting with customers! For years I did not allow any product in the store that I had not tasted so if anyone wonders why we sell so many almond products - it’s because I love them! But not so keen on chocolate or pears. I no longer eat dairy products which is an incredibly hard thing for an owner of delis! I am now reduced to wandering into the cheese areas and sniffing! I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in August 2013 and was fortunate to have an incredible team that allowed me to stop working and just focus on my health. Unfortunately, it reoccurred in Sept 2014 and I was told that I was classed as incurable.

I had delayed buying a third shop when originally diagnosed but this time was determined to push ahead with the purchase of the store in Turnham Green that we call our “baby” one. My great friend, Kelly McAteer, owner of Hemmingways helped, then, and still and helps me now to live the phrase “incurable does not mean terminal”. I have had incredible care from the Royal Marsden in Chelsea and have just celebrated one year of being cancer free by signing a lease for our fourth shop in Fulham where I think we will have a juice bar. Owning the stores has been a massive benefit in my recovery - fresh produce on tap, a team of chefs that prepared food for me in hospital and we even put a vitality bar in the store in Parsons Green so that I can select and eat raw vegan food daily for my lunch, although I succumb too often to the hot tandoori chicken wraps, just so good. I am always delighted by how wonderful our customers are, and how ready they are to give us

feedback. I think my favourite ‘customer feedback’ experience was lying in hospital, recovering after my first operation and discovering that that my surgeon was a customer in SW19 - I always knew all the best people were! But he was distressed that dried mango was unavailable - 6 tubes in and out of my body did not stop me phoning to find out why, and to ensure that it would be available for his next visit! I have returned to work and am determined to live my life to the fullest that I can, that means pushing the business full steam ahead, supporting other women in business, growing my own herbs and vegetables, as well as taking more time out and signing up for a 10k Gauntlet and the London Triathlon - sprint version though! I now feel that I have managed to find the perfect balance for me. So here’s to a bright future both for myself, and for Bayley & Sage! I hope to see you in store soon. bayley-sage.co.uk

Why visit a dentist for
anti-ageing treatment? Dr Nisha Patel from Infinitidental Clinic explains...
A
s we age, the imperfections show on our face, neck, dĂŠcolletage and hands. These lines, wrinkles and folds are a normal part of the ageing process. The skin structure changes over time and the destruction of tissue cells becomes greater than the production. Our skin becomes more fragile, less elastic and less flexible. The skin also looks less plump and less smooth. As a result, the skin becomes more transparent and loses its youthful colour and glow. Going to the dentist now means more. Their vast knowledge of facial structures and appropriate training, allows them to conduct anti-ageing treatments for new and existing patients. However, not all dentists are qualified in these treatments, so you may have to look further afield to find your practitioner. At Infinitidental Clinic, Dr Nisha Patel is qualified in treating all areas of the face, neck, dĂŠcolletage and hands, to minimise lines caused by muscle over activity and lines caused by volume loss. The treatment of ageing can result in a natural, balanced and refined outcome. Non surgical treatments are a gentle and effective way to improve how you look and feel without the need for surgery. It has become increasingly more popular as treatment can be carried out quickly, simply and comfortably. It is also more subtle than surgical treatments and is reversible.
Dr Nisha Patel
Dr Patel is also qualified in treating armpits to prevent (but not cure) excessive sweating – a lesser heard of service applicable to men and women. Underarm perspiration reduction is achieved through temporarily blocking chemical signals reaching the nerves which stimulate sweat glands.
These treatments are carried out in the clinical setting of the dental surgery at Infinitidental Clinic, where patients can feel at ease in the contemporary setting. Dr Nisha Patel maintains that conducting anti ageing treatments in a dental surgery provides complementary services to patients who already visit the clinic for other cosmetic treatments such as teeth whitening and teeth straightening. There is a science behind these treatments, allowing dentists to be the perfect fit for providing this service with their medical background, knowledge of facial composition and associated treatment complications, as well as their daily practice of injecting in dental work. Infinitidental Clinic use high quality FDA approved products during their treatments. Dr Nisha Patel provides free 20 minute consultations at Infinitidental Clinic for anti ageing treatments, so why not pop in for a chat.

Get beach beauty ready with semi-permanent
makeup
I
t’s an age old problem - you look preened and pristine in your on-trend kaftan and swimwear that’s been carefully selected to make the most of your shape, yet if you dare to indulge in a quick swim you play havoc with your previously polished appearance. The choice is a depressing one: avoid a relaxing dip in the pool or swim in the sea, or prepare to feel anything but Ursula Andress come the moment you emerge from the water. Yet there is one simple answer to having it all: it comes in the form of summerloving, semi-permanent make-up. 3 Essential elements for ‘beach beauty readiness’ 1. Eyebrows that frame your face and that refrain from smudging Our eyebrows are likely one of the most important elements of any make-up routine; they have the capability of making our entire face look completely different, simply based upon the angle of the arch and the deepness of the hue. 2. Blushed lips that are perfected with a slick of balm Semi-permanent blushed lips do away with the need for concealer or foundation application, which must be followed up all day through with application and re-application of lip stick. With a simple slick of balm you’ll have the perfect pout and be rocking a shade specifically chosen to complement your skin tone. 3. Eyeliner that guarantees wide awake, beautiful eyes Semi-permanent eyeliner is the pièce de résistance of beach ready beauty, making for wide awake and superbly pretty eyes (even when you’ve indulged in one Sangria too many). Meet Zara: Your industry leading beauty consultant As a seasoned industry expert, with over 20 years’ experience, Zara knows all there is to know about tailoring the perfect semi-permanent make-up to her client. Call her today to discuss just how easy, affordable and how beautifully rewarding semipermanent make-up can be.

The Perfect Storm Pam Custers on coping with the menopause
T
he menopause, the change, the pause, whatever you call it, is a time to re-evaluate ourselves. Hormones collide at a time of great change in our lives. Our children are starting to leave the nest. We and our partners may now have peaked on our career trajectory which in turn has implications for the family and indeed for our lives. The menopause can be the perfect storm! Some women experience this time as stressful. You may have a sense that you no longer know yourself like you did prior to the menopause. How you react will depend on a number of things including your health, your age, your identity, mental health and if you have achieved the things that you want to in your life. Hormonal changes may contribute to a depressed mood. We can swing from joy to frustration and irritation in a blink of an eye. The debate continues on whether the menopause does cause depression but professionals all agree it affects mood. Understanding whether depression or anxiety is due to menopause is a rather complex process. If you are worrying about your mood, stress or anxiety, or you simply wish to enjoy your life again, it may be useful to talk to a professional who can help you through this challenging process. You can reclaim your innate ability, recalibrate your life and take charge of your happiness. Pam Custers is an experienced therapist working with individuals, couples and families.

In addition, Jacky has a wealth of knowledge and experience treating pregnant women so has many tips and suggestions! Here are some of her self-help tips for pregnancy and to encourage the baby to lie correctly, which will help the birth process. • Keep as active as possible throughout the pregnancy. • “Walk tall” pushing your head upwards as if suspended by a string. ost people attend an osteopath when they are in pain or discomfort but osteopathy in pregnancy not only addresses any discomforts of pregnancy but also prepares the mother and baby for childbirth. As the baby grows and takes up more space within the abdomen there is less space for him/her to move about. The mother’s posture has to adapt to accommodate the position of the baby, and if this conflicts with her own musculoskeletal demands it may cause undue aches and pains. Osteopathic treatment is helpful in assisting the body to make postural changes easily and makes pregnancy much more comfortable. Jacky Lyons has over a decade of experience in treating pregnant women and newborns: “It’s wonderful to support women through their pregnancies. For example, if there is a torsion in the mother’s pelvis this affects the baby’s passage. So in order to facilitate the birth, I try to address any structural dysfunction. I try to ensure the mother’s
• Avoid sitting slouched in soft chairs, as this encourages the baby to turn into back-to-back position. Where possible, sit with your bottom well back in the chair and the lower back supported. • Finally, try to create that space to truly enjoy such a special time in your life!

Gleeson Framers celebrates a decade in business
L
iza Gleeson is the owner and manager of Gleeson Framers. She grew up locally and went to the Ursuline High School. After art college she served an apprenticeship locally, gaining 10 years work experience, and then she decided it was time to start her own framing business. That’s how Gleeson Framers was born! Liza started out working from a tucked away workshop on Kingston Road. With support from local customers, the business went from strength to strength and within 3 years moved to their current location at the end of Raynes Park High Street on Coombe Lane. Along the way Gleeson Framers has picked up several awards including, runners up in the South London Business Awards for best new business and Fine Art Trade Guild Framing awards. They now have four Picture Framers working in their bright and airy shop which has a fully equipped workshop behind, that allows them to undertake all work on site. Their location also benefits from 3 dedicated parking spaces. Liza: ‘My staff are also key to the success of the business. Lisa, Sally and Pete are my experienced framers. They are all passionate about art and have a keen eye for detail and design; they also understand the importance of customer service.
We would like to offer readers a 10% Discount on bespoke framing. (valid for new orders between 1/4/16 -
10/10/16). Please present this page at the time of ordering. Offer not valid with any other promotions or discounts.
We all agree that the aspect of framing which we love the most is seeing the different types of artwork customers bring in, then spending time with them going through the wide range of choices and techniques that you can only get from a bespoke framers. This enables the customers to choose something unique and special. Then, once the art has been framed, seeing their reaction! You never know what artworks come in - from rare and valuable paintings, to a child’s drawing, each of which need the same amount of care and attention” We would like to thank all of our wonderful loyal customers and friends who have helped us reach this milestone. ELITE – MINI CABS IN THE 21ST CENTURY Carly Lewin runs a tight ship
Carly Lewin with her dad Chris
W
hen Elite was founded in 1990 in Raynes Park by my dad Chris Lewin, we mainly relied on customer recommendations to promote the business. Newspaper adverts were expensive and we weren’t allowed to have a sandwich board or poster outside the shop. From the beginning we have distributed our business cards to local areas. As the business grew, we employed a company to do this for us, instead of our family. As the years went by, Elite had a website built. However it was very basic. The office moved from radios to phones, but was still logging journeys on paper. When I took over running Elite full time 6 years ago, my main aim was to ensure that the company was up to date and moving with the times like the rest of Raynes Park. This began with an office refurbishment so the shop was more of a professional work place, than a typical cab company. Cordic, a computer despatch and booking system was then installed. This was a hard time for many of the office staff, who were used to working on paper, and not necessarily computer literate. With plenty of training and support, we then had a confident work force using the system. It also meant that drivers now worked from personal devices, so could have the jobs sent to them remotely, and we could track them. This new system enabled us to provide a much smoother service to all customers.
Being a small business, any changes took time to implement. Once the system had been integrated with staff, we then moved on to working on a functional website. This also meant that we rebranded the company, and moved from the old blue and yellow logo and cards, to a more professional grey and white. We also took this opportunity to introduce an office uniform, to ensure our office staff are smart like our drivers. The next step was having our booking and tracking app built. We feel the online and app booking helps us to stay competitive and a leader in the industry. They have also allowed us to grow our area, and therefore customer base and profile. It is very important to us to be a good representative of Raynes Park and we pride ourselves on our professional reputation. The ‘Change Of Life’ Menopause affects all women differently – the hot flushes, the night sweats the weight change and of course, the end of periods and the end of an era. Many women are prepared to try alternative treatments or paths before approaching traditional treatments. Here are some local practitioners with plenty of experience. MARCELLE DUBRUEL ~ NUTRITION COACH: Menopause can feel that there is a “pause” on enjoying life. It does not have to be this way and the right nutrition can get you feeling sexy, light, glowing and more YOU. Eat more plant foods especially those rich in phytoestrogens, and isoflavones, which help to balance your hormones. Eat more oily fish, for skin health. Stay away from added sugar, and lose unwanted pounds. Love dancing? Move your body more to keep your bones strong. Visit rootstovitality.com and claim your free 3 day “Happy Hormones” menu plan with recipes and shopping list. I can coach you to feel fabulous! 07710 234282 HEMI CLINTON ~ KINESIOLOGY: Kinesiology uses muscle mode testing, which is an excellent diagnostic tool. It treats the body holistically and is great at providing an “MOT”. I identify structural, nutritional, chemical, emotional and energetic imbalances and treat these conditions, allowing the body to excel at removing the stress that stops you from performing at 100%. This is an excellent healing modality in identifying and treating hormonal imbalances during menopause. Treatment is specifically tailored to each individual’s needs, which may, in fact, be linked to weaknesses in areas not related to the menopause. For a full list of treatments call 07771 653078 TOBY STEPHENS ~ ACUPUNCTURIST: Acupuncture views menopause as a natural process. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU’RE GONE? Rachael Brady, Trust and Estates Lawyer sets out Hart Brown’s top ten tips to protect your loved ones
1 Make a will Making a will adds both certainty and security for your loved ones. If you do not make a will, your estate may not go where you expect it to. For example, a surviving spouse or civil partner does not automatically receive the whole of your estate on your death. An unmarried partner will receive nothing!
2 Children from a first marriage If you have children from a previous marriage, you should consider protecting their interests when making a will. All too 32 apr-may 2016 | darlingmagazine.co.uk
often we see relationships between step-parents and step-children breaking down after the death of the parent and, unless your will has been made to protect them, your children could be disinherited if your partner changed their will after your death.
3 Your partner remarrying after your death Linking to tip 2, another potential risk is that your partner remarries after your death and their will is amended to leave their estate to their new partner. That new partner may cut your children out of their will altogether and your children may receive nothing.

4 Divorce
8 Inheritance tax
Outright gifts to beneficiaries can be in danger if that beneficiary gets divorced. Any assets left outright to that beneficiary will be considered as part of their assets when reaching a divorce settlement and your hardearned funds could pass into the hands of the person divorcing your loved one.
In simple terms, inheritance tax is payable at 40% on your assets over your tax free allowance. Through careful planning in your will and your investments, you can avoid paying this onerous inheritance tax and protect your assets for your loved ones.
5 Financial irresponsibility If your beneficiary is not responsible with money, any outright gift to them could be wasted. Through your will you can still provide for your loved one but add a level of protection so that the funds are managed by more trustworthy people chosen by you.
6 Mental or physical incapacity If your beneficiary suffers from a mental or physical incapacity, they may be entitled to means-tested state benefits. Proper provision in your will can ensure that your assets are properly managed for their benefit but without affecting their benefits.
7 Care fees If your beneficiaries are more elderly, there may be more likelihood that they will require care, either at home or in a care or nursing home. If your funds are left to them directly, your assets may be used up in paying for their care. You can add protection in your will so that funds are available for your loved ones but are protected from being taken by the local authority to pay for care.
9 Who will inherit if your loved ones have died? As well as thinking about who you would want to inherit, you should consider who should inherit if your first choice beneficiaries have died before you. Would you want your estate to go to other family members, friends or charity? Make a will so that your wishes are fulfilled.
10 Protect your own financial stability Whilst it is very important to consider and protect your loved ones when you are gone, it is essential to make sure that you yourself are financially stable to provide for them. Consider taking independent financial advice about your investments. Also consider making a lasting power of attorney to cover the position if you lose capacity to deal with your own financial affairs. Before taking any steps in relation to any of these tax planning options, you should take professional advice. The options mentioned are based on the current tax rules which may be subject to change.

DIG DOWN DEEP Local builder, Paul Bryan explains
W
ith London property being worth an enormous amount, the trend is to maximise that asset and expand one’s accommodation as much as possible. Most houses now have been extended out the back and the roof space has been pushed out to capitalize on the permitted development volume. So where does one go to continue to add value to that ever increasing asset? Well, the answer is down, below your house ie. A BASEMENT.
There are many benefits to having a basement and these include: • An enormous increase in floor area without an increase in the size of the footprint of a buildings or a significant impact on the size of the garden. In some cases doubling the size • An increase in space to support growing families without the need to move house. With stamp duty higher than before, this makes a lot of sense
• Semi-basements can make good use of sloping sites since constructing a basement will negate the requirement for having to level the site • If an existing house is located in a sensitive area, for example an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or Conservation area, where there are restrictions on development, the construction of a basement can allow the addition of extra space that would otherwise not be allowed, giving you the dream kitchen, kids’ playroom, cinema room or that perfect bar and cellar • Houses with basements can have improved energy efficiency and insulation since the basement will have fewer exposed external walls We offer a full service from planning, design, structural engineers and the build of the structure and the finishing of what will be a magnificent addition. So please contact us, and let us grow your home together. havenconstruction.org.uk 07880 546 063

New Beginnings In Spring
S
pring is traditionally a great time to sell a house or flat. Everything is in bloom, everything looks brighter and the market is usually frenetic with activity. Many families look to match their purchase with the end of the school year. Stephen Parsons, Director of Residential at Andrew Scott Robertson, says “It is rare to sell a house in the summer for a better price than you would sell it in the springtime, and this is particularly relevant for the larger family houses. In reality, there are buyers out there 365 days a year but springtime has always been a particularly good time to sell or let a property.” As one of the Capital’s greenest boroughs, Wimbledon really comes alive in spring and we have seen an influx of new potential buyers and tenants. We are currently registering around 55 new buyers a week looking just in Wimbledon. With this in mind, we are preparing to do everything possible to help our clients achieve a sale at the earliest opportunity and at the best possible price. As a seller, you can maximise your chances of success in the way that you present your property for sale. Ensure your property is well-aired, get those outside areas up to scratch and add some bright touches to suit the season, such as cushions and towels.
Remember, you only need one buyer to successfully sell your home. We focus on pricing your property correctly and getting the right people through the door. ”Fantastic, personal, trustworthy service - highly recommended. I commissioned ASR to sell my property following 18 months of stress with a large, unnamed agent. Moving to ASR showed me how an estate agent should really act, in the interests of sellers and buyers alike. ASR understood the market and were able to focus on reputable, realistic buyers. They managed the process incredibly well for all parties from start to finish. I have learnt my lesson, bigger is not always better. Market knowledge and a professional, trustworthy service led by experienced professionals is.” Mr Reilly, SW19

NO ISSUES For Jane Burns, our local Big Issue seller whose life is a moving story of attitude over adversity. Karine Torr reports
T
he friendliest face daily outside Centre Court, local Southfield’s resident and Big Issue seller Jane Burns, is an avid reader of fantasy novels, (Lord of the Rings being one of her favourites). She spends her days off about town with Caz her best friend American bull dog and takes a keen interest in extreme sports for the disabled, cruising full pelt down Replingham Road in her wheelchair, bouncing over sleeping policemen - a daredevilish substitute until UK sports of the like are developed. But her formidably positive attitude and zest for life is the bright silver lining to a stormy, traumatic past. Aged twenty, whilst studying in Preston to become a qualified accountant she was critically injured in a motorcycling accident; losing her arm and then spending the next 9 years in and out of hospital trying to save her right leg.
Eventually the trauma from the accident began to take its toll however and Jane collapsed from anorexia. After a few months recovering she was still in no state to work and was forced to retire from her job as an accountant in her local council. Simultaneously, and after 67 operations over almost a decade, she finally lost her leg. Her reflection on these events is rather surprising though: “Out of something bad you can create something good.” She no longer felt the constant fear or the anxiety of ‘am I going to lose this leg?’ and was finally free from her attachment to hospitals. Nevertheless her pain would not end there. Still in a vulnerable state, she fell into a marriage with an abusive partner riddled with drug addiction. Fourteen years in a toxic relationship and two babies later, (whom she was forced to put up for adoption), Jane lost her tenacity and was forced out onto the streets. Of that time she says “I felt so low, I didn’t want to live”. Now homeless, she had to search for a way out. Helping out a friend one day, she stumbled on The Big Issue and found selling it was something she was capable of doing and really enjoyed. “It makes you feel less like you’re a nothing and gives you your confidence back.” You can find Jane six days a week interacting with the people of Wimbledon. “I love having that contact and being part of the community,” she says. She’s even become a quasi-counsellor to some, listening to their problems and stories. Becoming financially independent and on a path back to self-sufficiency, her unfailing drive to face whatever life throws at her is an inspiring lesson to us all. “I just take each day as it comes now and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I love life!” darlingmagazine.co.uk | apr-may 2016

East’s pre-emptive 3♥ is poor but, third in hand, and at favourable vulnerability, it sometimes works. Here, South overcalled a minimum 3♠; North raised to game. Moments later, South had made 4♠. West led 10♥, dummy covered and East won with A♥ before returning a heart to be ruffed. However, whatever West led now, South could win, draw trumps ending in dummy and cash two heart winners to record ten tricks. However, 4♠ can be defeated. When West leads 10♥, East should realise that, with only a single entry to dummy, declarer can be prevented from making two heart tricks if he ducks. J♥ holds trick one and declarer leads K♥; East ducks again, South discards a low club and West ruffs. West continues with a trump. South wins in hand and plays to A♠. When he leads a heart now, East covers and South ruffs but South has made only one heart trick and cannot reach dummy again. As a result, nine tricks are his limit. aceoftrumps.com

pring time! How wonderful. It really is one of my favourite times of the year. With winter over and the weather starting to feel slightly warmer (well slightly) I can’t help but look at all the wonderful colour and array of flowers that are out. Edible flowers are something that you can use when cooking, as long as you make sure that you buy them from a reputable stockist.
You can use them with both sweet and savoury food, to eat or just to garnish, they look truly amazing. Ideal to wow your guests at parties, there are a huge array to choose from. From lavender to roses, sweet violets to elderflower you would be amazed at the variety of edible flowers that are out there. I particularly like a lemon and lavender posset recipe that I’ve pinned to the Parties To Go Pinterest page, which looks amazing and seems to have been repinned lots of times. Other ideas include, pizza with edible flowers, salads, cupcakes made with flower essence and how about sprucing up your ice cubes by placing an edible flower in the ice cube tray before pouring water in. They really look fab. The recipe below is extremely easy to do and is extremely popular with my customers. partiestogo.co.uk | 07971 141733

Y U CAN’T SIT WITH US By Kate Greenhalgh
W
e haven’t got Wimbledon tickets in the ballot again. Another summer blighted before it’s begun. My uncle and aunt always get them - and they live in Gerrards Cross. So unfair. 25 years a good burgher of this parish, and I have to grin and bear the rellies parking by our house and skipping down to the courts in new outfits and thinly-veiled schadenfreud. Whilst they debauch their rustic Buckinghamshire souls in strawberries and cream, the closest I’ll get to the glamour and action of Centre Court is Sharapova’s pop-up sugar horror on the High St. Sweet? No, bitter. But typical of me and tennis. Always on the outside looking in. Age 9, left out of the school team, despite Dad buying me a Dunlop ‘Flash’. Age 19, queuing from 4 am and still only getting outside courts. Age 29, dropped from the ladies doubles club, on the discriminatory charge of being too unfit, crap and still not understanding the rules. Age 39, failing to bully my pig-headed kids into tennis boot camp to fulfil my displaced ambitions. Age 49, my friend Josie gets Leyton Hewitt staying at her house, and I get a team of bearded technical support operatives. (But at least they kindly sorted out why our wifi was the speed of Caxton’s printing press circa 1472.) Ivan Lendl once looked round our house and rejected it because of - get this too much noise from ‘the crows’. What crows? I thought I had an in when my daughter got a job in the souvenir shop last year. Indeed.

The privileged chance to provide free board and lodging for all her friends from out of the area who were also working there. There is only so much rejection one can take. Only so much tennisy elitism one can toil under as a despised underclass. Only so much it’s-more-fun-on-Henman-Hill bravado one can muster. To hell with tennis, I have my Crystal Palace season ticket. I was actually INVITED to attend the exclusive Swansea away game, which, obviously, I did, despite the Severn Bridge being closed due to sheep, high winds and torrential rain. Swansea 1: Palace 1 - a magnificent draw in the midst of a run of dismal losses. THIS is the beautiful game. THIS is where I belong.
