editor’s letter Dear Darling Reader, There’s a wonderful African proverb that says “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with others”. I’ve been reflecting on this as autumn approaches, signalling the end of the long social summer. As the new school year starts and we get back into work mode, I realise that it’s my circle of friends and acquaintances in the Wimbledon community that motivates me and makes it all worthwhile. Serial Entrepreneur Julie Eltham Chats to Darling Editor Karine Torr about a life of business and networking
I
moved to Wimbledon when I was 2 years old. I have such wonderful memories growing up and working here and I’m so lucky to have many friends and business connections in the area.
Wimbledon was the place that sparked my career choices too - my first job from leaving school at 17 was for a company in Strathmore Road and it was Wimbledon Park where I first learnt about sales and marketing for my next job in the cosmetics Wimbledon was my industry. But I knew ‘stomping ground’ I had to have my own when I was a (very) business and took the lively child and plunge - starting up a teenager - I can gift delivery company remember going out called Present Surprise on Friday nights to where we supplied Wimbledon Public hampers, flowers, gifts, Hall and coming back did personal shopping - late! As a young adult and arranged private I saved and saved to events for many people buy my first house in – including some very Julie celebrating 10 years as an Athena Director Colliers Wood at 21 Photo Copyright Desi Fontaine Photography famous clients! I then years old, got married got an offer to buy in Morden Registry Office and held the the business, so I sold up and started my next reception at the local Italian restaurant - Dolce business - a cleaning company called Bizzy Vita. Bees! My daughters were both born in Wimbledon and were christened at Christ Church in Colliers Wood. Now in their twenties, my eldest Francesca is a Raw Vegan Chef with her own company Moody Mango in Hackney, and my youngest Abigail is training to be a police officer in Portsmouth. Both my girls still love coming back to Wimbledon to see old friends and what’s changed.
A few years in and still in Wimbledon, I went to an Athena Women’s Networking Meeting and was amazed by the concept of women’s business networking. I knew I wanted to do this as a business, so I quickly sold Bizzy Bees and bought the franchise for the local area. The support and connections made possible by these business meetings is invaluable - there’s nothing stronger than trust and word of mouth in a group that meets monthly. Through Athena Wimbledon I met Debbie Blott of the Décor Café and teach at the Décor Café - our next workshop is Saturday, 24th September. We have a house in Wimbledon and we’re also very lucky that we can spend time in our East Sussex flat by the sea, where my parents took me for holidays every year. Memories! I am so thankful for Wimbledon and the opportunities and lifelong friendships that the town has given me.

Finding Mimmo A touch of Puglia on Leopold Road
A
lmost a decade ago, Mimmo Coppola started Aromatica deli caffé on Leopold Road. It began life as a regional Italian deli offering an authentic cultural food experience to the local people of Wimbledon. Born in Puglia, Mimmo’s philosophy echoes the honest simplicity of the region, offering catering, or ‘order and pickup’ fresh food in the deli, newly baked home-made bread, fresh pasta, or the chance to simply enjoy real Italian coffee and a chat with the friendly host. “My grandmother, Cosima, started a small trattoria in Puglia which my father Fernando took over. It’s in my blood.” says Mimmo, “I came to London in 1986 and worked as a chef in an Italian restaurant called Daphne’s in South Kensington, moving on to Enoteca Turi which is now in Chelsea. Although I’ve adapted to local ways, my roots are in authentic recipes, with my signature dish being Mediterranean roasted sea bass. ”
Mark Waegner and Mimmo Coppola
Mimmo has even cooked for Pope Benedetto XVI when in 2010 the Pope was visiting the Embassy of the Vatican on Parkside. Mark Waegner, a local resident who lives around the corner and has eaten at Aromatica regularly with his family over the past five years, has this to say: “Mimmo’s charisma and generosity always makes us feel welcome and at home. He knows all his customers by name but we come here because the food is freshly cooked and tastes of Italy!”

Why Painting Is Good For Children By local Oxford Graduate Creative Writing and Art Tutor, Katherine Smith At school I remember painting fruit and making lots (and lots) of coil pots. I was good at copying but it was tedious. Then, waiting for a barrister job to start, I did a painting course. The teacher said “follow your instinct”; “there are no mistakes” - magic! I paint instinctively, choosing colour and form as I go, expressing what I feel in the moment. Of course, sometimes that’s ‘it’s not working’, and so I take a break, have a cup of tea, go back to it fresh. I’ve learnt to explore creatively and that you really can create your own joy.
P
icasso said it took a lifetime to paint like a child. If children paint regularly in a supportive environment, they experience a creative joy they don’t forget.
It’s not easy to let go of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ - it’s what we’re taught by exams. But, when we do - magic happens! That’s why it’s important to start early! paintwritenow.co.uk 07779 100 659

From 6 to 60+, Lucy Martin has People Talking Darling chats to this Oxford graduate with a passion for teaching languages
I
“
t’s all about creating images and links in the children’s imagination,” says Lucy, “Many adults will remember “Mrs Vandertramp” from long-ago French lessons at school. But how many of us can remember what it stood for? I approach that in a different way. My students know that list from a picture I draw, as “house verbs”. I draw a cartoon to explain how “the forest of yesterday begins with je me suis, je suis and j’ai” and to demonstrate the present tense I play a basic march on the piano, or even the guitar to teach the daily routine “je me lève, je me douche, je me brosse les dents…” Rhyming and images are especially useful with dyslexic children who are never going to master the art of learning verbs by rote. I have no inhibitions when it comes to teaching, and I have been known to use dressing up, masks, drums, moving the furniture, whatever it takes to help the child in question get it. Their success is my success, every time. I treat every child as unique. Each one has his or her own specific learning style and struggles and this individuality can’t be addressed in the classroom. After just one hour I can pinpoint where those strengths and difficulties lie and work out the right strategy for a particular child.
Most of our students achieve A/A* at GCSE and top marks at Common Entrance having come to us initially with the prospect of failure.”
“From a D to an A* in 6 months – delighted!” says local mum Jen Craven. “My daughter learnt more in an hour with Lucy than she did during the whole of last year” says another parent Lucy works mainly from home in Raynes Park and specialises in French and Spanish, but also teaches Russian and German and it’s not just children that come to LMT for language lessons. She runs adult conversation classes and office lunchtime sessions too for anyone who wants to brush up or even start from scratch. lucymartintuition.co.uk 07515 630 530

A Fresh Start For Senti Debbie Knight creates Senti’s first own fragrance brand exclusively in Wimbledon
S
enti’s story started 11 years ago, when a family skiing holiday was cut short due to a lack of snow and we made the impromptu decision to catch a train to Florence. There we stumbled upon a beautiful hotel overlooking the city, which was filled with a wonderful fragrance diffusing throughout all the rooms and immediately capturing my imagination. My sister and I sat down at my kitchen table as soon as I arrived back home and we haven’t looked back since! It became the start of my passion for fragrance, my own business and the start of some very special business relationships. I have since met and worked with some fascinating people with incredible knowledge about the fragrance industry. And I have been a distributor to shops such as Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and Liberty, as well as interior designers, hotels and independent lifestyle shops. After learning a lot along the way, the next exciting step for Senti is the creation of our own brand of home fragrances. I’m extremely proud to announce that in September we will be launching our own brand, which will be exclusively available in our new shop on Church Road, Wimbledon Village. We have brought a lot of our perfume contacts together to help create our own label, which has been a very rewarding process. Working with some of the best noses in the business has been such a pleasure, including renowned perfumers Ruth Mastenbroek, who has created fragrances for Jo Malone and Kenneth Turner, and John Stephens who has worked with the Queen!
We have also given Senti a new “look”. Brand consultant Paul Stead of The Brewery and designer Sarah McDonnell have been brilliant in helping shape the new brand, including a tweaking of our logo and colours. We are so lucky to have such loyal local customers who are eager to support us and we want to include them in this new venture. The new brand will be in its infancy when launched so we will be so grateful to hear what people think! There are also some very exciting and innovative secret products in the pipeline that will be the first of their kind to the fragrance market and will all be born right here in Wimbledon! We’re so looking forward to welcoming everyone to our new shop on Church Road in September. senti.co.uk darlingmagazine.co.uk | sept-oct 2016

If the first event you attend doesn’t prove successful attend another one and don’t give up! Just remember that every person you meet provides an opportunity. The key is identifying that opportunity and then deciding whether or not you want to pursue it. Listen. Show that you are interested in people before you make an attempt at being interesting yourself. And, gear your brain to help, not to sell. Try and attend a variety of events. Dealer South N/S Game N E S W 1S NB 1NT NB 3NT South’s response of 1NT showed 6-9pts, and denied more than 2-card spade support. North sensibly raised to game, and West correctly led top-of-a-sequence Q♥. Often when a very strong dummy hits the table, the defenders’ shoulders slump, but good players will realise that you, as declarer, hold a weak hand, and will try to cut communications between the two hands. Here, the fate of the contract lies squarely with the declarer. To secure her contract, declarer can count two spades, two hearts and a diamond trick. She therefore requires four club tricks. This can be virtually assured if South retains an outside entry to her hand. To this end, at trick one, declarer should rise with dummy’s K ♥ and lead K ♣, which West should duck. When J ♣ is then led, East produces 9 ♣, reassuring declarer that she can overtake this card with her Q ♣, and continue playing clubs until West parts with his ace. Once that happens, nothing can stop South returning to hand with her carefully preserved A♥, and making her excellent game contract. aceoftrumps.com

Top Tips for Your Children’s Teeth From the dentists at Infintidental Clinic
M
aintaining good oral health should begin from the moment your baby’s first teeth start to cut through. It is your responsibility as parents to ensure that your children’s teeth are looked after soundly.
Brushing children’s teeth 1. Children should use a different fluoridated tooth paste to adults 2. Toothpaste for 3 year olds under has a lower fluoride level so ensure you use the correct toothpaste 3. Children under the age of 8 should be supervised when brushing 4. Guide your child whilst brushing. The use of a mirror helps them see where they are brushing. Teeth should be brushed twice a day for at least 2 minutes 5. A pea sized amount of tooth paste should be used, brushing the teeth in circular movements 6. Tooth paste should be spat out and not rinsed with water
Additional Preventative Treatment 1. Fissure sealants: Can be applied to children’s back teeth when they are aged 6-7, preventing decay. A thin coating is applied to avoid build-up of food particles in the indentations of the teeth. Fissure sealants can last 5-10 years 2. Fluoride varnish can be applied to children’s and adult’s teeth, working to make tooth enamel stronger. The varnish can be reapplied every 3-6 months.
7. Swallowing toothpaste should be discouraged
Visiting the Dentist 1. Visit the dentist regularly. It is usually recommended that you visit your dentist twice a year for a check up, although your dentist can advise you of your exact recall interval, depending on your oral health 2. Regular visits to the dentist ensure children are familiar with the environment and the dentist, allowing any nervousness and anxiousness to ease 3. If a child’s tooth is damaged, see your dentist immediately to avoid infection
Book your children in at Infinitidental Clinic for their check up. They will be seen for free if parents are patients. Call on 020 8542 2171

Barrel & Cask bar tips with an ice bar Imagine a party setting that was so extraordinarily unique, that had such a wow factor that people were talking about it for months to
come. Imagine hosting a party with a stunning sculpture lit up with
specialist lighting as the focal point of your venue. And imagine if that
sculpture was made of ice and also acted as a bar, individually crafted to your design to create a shimmering and dramatic centre piece.
A new era in special events
Ice bars are an innovative and unusual way to make your party an event to remember and create the impact you want and Barrel and Cask are leading the way when it comes to new and stunning event ideas and personalised bars.
3 steps to the perfectly unique party
Whether it’s just to celebrate the new year or for a special occasion such as an engagement, birthday, corporate event or wedding, now is the time to start putting your plans in place if you’re thinking of hosting the perfectly unique party this Christmas and Barrel and Cask have made creating that wow factor event a bit of a breeze.
1 Choose and book your venue and bar
Your venue doesn’t have to be vast or flamboyant, if you’re considering an ice bar. The versatility of ice means you can have a bar in any size, shape or design, from long and slim to serve lots of guests, to circular, small and compact for smaller venues. The bar is created for your space, not the other way around. Of course you don’t have to choose ice for your bar. There are lots of other options available from Shabby Chic, to LED, Colour Commander, Black & White, Vintage and more, all of which can be tailored to suit you.
2 Decide on the design
If you’re going for ice, what would make your ice bar uniquely you? Your initials carved into the ice, a company logo or a carved design that represents your special celebration? Barrel and Cask ice bars come with standard snow filled designs or with a logo, 3D carved design, backdrop or even with a Vodka luge – a channel drilled through the ice straight to a waiting glass via which Vodka or other drinks are served, ensuring a chilled drink, a moment of fun and a bar to remember.
3 Invite your guests and think about nibbles
With a Barrel and Cask bar, all your drink requirements are taken care of so all you have to do now is invite the guests. Barrel and Cask assemble the entire bar for you and organise your drinks too with a selection of organic wines from around the globe, traditional British ales, a wine / beer menu matching service and mulled wine. They’re also fully insured and come with all safety equipment.
And on the night itself
It’s all about making your imagination, a reality. Specialist lighting lights up your bar to create a spellbinding effect and incredible atmosphere and you can enjoy hosting a party that delights and inspires your guests and ensures a night to remember.

Autumn ideas from Carole
A
lthough the summer is over and everyone is back to school or uni, it’s a great time of year for seasonal ingredients and lovely comforting recipes. There is such a range of fruit and vegetables to enjoy in the autumn including cabbage, kale, runner beans, courgettes, artichokes, pears and plums to name a few. However as it’s the start of British apple season, there are delicious eating and cooking apples around now, especially Cox, Bramley, Pippin and Gala which are some of my favourites and at Parties to Go we make
sure we always have the freshest and tastiest ingredients. Flavour can vary greatly from nutty and spicy flavours to more fragrant apples. Culinary (cooking) apples are bigger and generally more acidic and therefore have a more bitter taste than eating apples. However the mistake some people make is to add too much sugar in recipes with apples as the bitterness in cooking the apples does mellow when heated. partiestogo.co.uk | 07971 141733
Autumn Apple & Cinnamon Sponge 170g (6oz) Softened Butter 170g self-raising flour 170g caster sugar 3 large eggs 4 Cox apples 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1. Cream the sugar and butter together and add the eggs and then the flour. Mix together. 2. Next peel, core and slice thin wedges of the apples. Mix with the cinnamon and sugar. 3. Grease and line a 23cms cake tin and place the apple mixture in the bottom. 4. Spoon over the cake mixture to cover the apples. 5. Bake at 180 degrees/ gas mark 4 for 30/40 mins or until the knife comes out clean. 6. Enjoy with delicious whipped cream or Cornish vanilla ice cream.

Indian Summers and English Autumns Prep your garden with Andrew Fisher Tomlin
W
e can almost rely on having at least a week of an Indian summer in the south of England but they are short lived and we’ll very quickly see the nights drawing in and want to spend less time in the garden. But before we do what can we do to make 2017 even better than this year with good autumn preparation?
The best time for planting Autumn is the best time to be preparing beds and planting new shrubs and trees. These plants will be going into their annual hibernation as soon as leaves drop and by planting now we give them a chance to get healthy root systems growing in time to burst into life in the spring. There’s a cost advantage as well because bare rooted trees cost less to buy and perennial plants can be planted in much smaller sizes but still reach the potential of a much larger specimen planted in the spring.
The best time for planting spring colour This year the tulips in our gardens really stood out because everything else was a few weeks behind. So plan a vibrant bulb display. Tried and tested daffodils are great for early colour but look out for bee and butterfly friendly bulbs like Muscari latifolium, big Crocus and Chinodoxa luciliae, all available at your local garden centre. Then follow up the display with Tulips and Alliums for the early summer.
The best time for borders Healthy plants need tidy borders. So get pruning shrubs and trees that need some shaping or deadwood removing. Pick up the apples left to rot under trees. Mulch your borders, especially plants such as roses that will benefit from good composted manure. And if you’ve not started
composting yet then invest in one of the new hot box composters that take all sorts of kitchen scraps as well as leaves and garden waste to produce compost in double quick time.
The best time to help wildlife This is the start of a tough season for wildlife so keep an eye out for hedgehogs that might be trying to hibernate in leaf piles. If you’ve got some shady, wooded areas in the garden make some wood piles out of the deadwood you’ve removed from trees to make great bug hotels and provide food for the birds next year. And whilst you’re at it put up some bird boxes and bee boxes to help our treasured bumble bees over winter. fishertomlin.com Fisher Tomlin & Bowyer 020 8542 0683 darlingmagazine.co.uk | sept-oct 2016

EVER THOUGHT OF HAVING A TATTOO? We’re talking eyeliner and eyebrows
S
emi-permanent make-up is a specialist form of temporary ‘tattooing’ and is entirely different to the tattoos you might get on your body!
Misconceptions 1. It’s not painful Numbing cream is used before and during semi-permanent make-up procedures, to ensure your comfort at all times. In fact, many of my clients fall asleep during their treatment!
2. Colours are custom blended and matched to your natural skin tone As an experienced pro in this industry, I know how to colour match you perfectly and invest in the best line of pigments to do the job.
Zara Elliott
5. It is completely safe Any premises undertaking semipermanent make-up procedures must be thoroughly checked and licenced by their local authority and fully endorsed and vetted by professional bodies and insurers. If the technician follows their legal obligations, then semi-permanent makeup is a completely safe option.
Ready for your completely personalised consultation? I love the results that can be achieved through semi-permanent makeup, and I make it my mission to tailor and customise my services to every lady I look after – helping them achieve the results that they envisage. Definitely no ‘slug brows’ here!
3. You don’t need to keep topping up your colour every 3 months Semi-permanent make-up can remain in the skin for up to three years and will only need a colour-boosting session after approximately 12 to 18 months.
4. The end result is natural and timeless Semi-permanent makeup is all about defining and enhancing your natural features. Whether it is adding hair-strokes to a sparse brow, soft eyeliner to make eyes sparkle or creating the illusion of fuller lips without the need for fillers, semi-permanent makeup will help you look your best at all times.
So whether you have a burning question about semi-permanent makeup or are ready and raring to start working with me, get in touch. You can contact me directly on 07786 936979 or email me at info@zaraelliottbeauty.com Book your consultation online at zaraelliottbeauty.com to avoid disappointment.

Why should you make a will if you own property abroad? Seila Sanchez Lucas explains
English law, it does not automatically guarantee that your overseas property will go to whoever you chose to inherit your property in your English will. If the foreign property is located in an EU member state, such as France, the EU Succession Regulation, which came into force on 17 August 2015, will apply to the succession of your estate in France.
I
f you own any assets abroad, or are considering investing in a holiday property in a foreign country, it is important that you think about making a will or reviewing your existing will to ensure that your wishes are carried out and your overseas assets pass to your intended beneficiaries. This is because, even if you have made a will under
34
sept-oct 2016 | darlingmagazine.co.uk
The EU Succession Regulation is binding in all the EU member states excepting the UK, Ireland and Denmark. Although the Regulation does not apply in the UK, it affects the way that the ‘conflict of laws’ rules in England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland interact with the rules of the EU member states where it does apply. The ‘conflict of laws’ rules are that each country has to decide which country’s law will govern who inherits your estate when you die. The Regulation says that the law applicable to your succession will be the law of the member state in which you were habitually resident at the time of your death but gives you the option of expressly choosing the law of your nationality when you make a will.
Authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (490290) Authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority
Seila Sanchez Lucas
For example, if you are a UK national and have made an English will, but you own a holiday cottage in France and your main place of residence at the time of your death is the UK, it is likely that English law will be applied to your succession in France. This will ensure that the freedom to leave your property to whoever you wish under English law is respected. However, if you do nothing and die without a will, the English ‘conflict of laws’ rules will be applied to your succession in France. These rules say that the succession of immovable assets, such as land or residential property, is governed by the law where the assets are located. If your holiday property is located in France, French succession laws and, particularly, the French “forced heirship rules”, will dictate the way in which your holiday property is inherited when you die. Similarly, if you are a UK national and you make an English will but your habitual place of residence when you die is France, where you own a holiday cottage, the French succession rules will govern who inherits your entire estate. This situation can be avoided by including a choice of English law in your will, in which case France will apply English law to your whole estate.
Brexit will surely have an impact on how the UK is regarded by the other EU member states when they apply the EU Succession Regulation and the current choices available to UK nationals may end once the formal exit from the European Union by the UK has taken place. An alternative when planning for the succession of your foreign property is to make a will in the country where the property is located and, therefore, exclude the foreign property from your English will. This has the advantage after your death of saving the time and expense of validating your English will in a foreign country and expediting the succession of your foreign property. Before taking any steps mentioned in this article, you should take professional legal advice. This article is based on current regulations which may be subject to change. Keep the heat in and the cold out this winter
T
he thought of a cold house this winter may be on your mind already. With the cost of energy increasing continuously, what better time to start thinking about warming up this autumn and reduce those winter bills? Look to extend or renovate and reap the rewards. PAUL’S TOP TIPS By adding a loft conversion you can certainly increase the insulation to your home. Building Regulation has become really stringent over the past few years with regard to insulating lofts. The U-value (measure of heat loss) that needs to be achieved is very low in order to get your building control sign off.
Your home would benefit from a loft as heat rises and, with the current regulations, should not escape. You may find that you are the only house in the road where the snow does not melt on the roof once you are properly insulated. Double glazing is most certainly very beneficial to any home. Keep the heat in and the cold out. Haven Construction works in partnership with Grabex Windows, who produce top quality, double glazed wooden, UPVC and aluminium windows, as well as doors, at very affordable prices. You will wish that you had done this a long time ago.

The ‘B’ Word It’s not all doom and gloom for the SW19 Property Market
I
t’s been three months and we’re still coming to terms with the shock result of Britain’s decision to leave the EU and the political turmoil that has ensued. After all, with 60% of London voters and 63,000 Merton voters (compared to 37,097 Brexiters) wanting to remain, we were feeling pretty assured of the outcome of the referendum. Some say politics has never been so interesting, with everybody having an opinion on Brexit… and an argument! One of the hot topics throughout and since the referendum has been how the result might affect the property market; with many property and financial experts predicting that house prices will fall significantly. And as a result many buyers and sellers have gone into a state of panic, not knowing what to believe in such uncertain times. As the weeks go by and we adjust and gain confidence, we are getting a better indication of how the market is responding after the initial shock – and indeed it’s not all bad news, in fact some say far from it. Although many economists still expect reduced or negative price growth, there are also many market insiders who believe the lack of housing and consistent demand, along with interest rates falling and lower mortgage costs, will prevent price falls.
Stephen Parsons, Director of Residential, Andrew Scott Robertson
Even if there is a reduction in prices (Economist Howard Archer, of IHS investment services, predicts prices could fall 5% during the second half of 2016 and throughout 2017, quotes the Financial Times), this could be of benefit to the market as a whole - giving a fantastic opportunity to home owners wanting to upsize, first time buyers desperate to get a foot on the ladder and foreign investors who will have more spending power. But it’s more likely that prices will keep rising, at the lower end of the market particularly, though just at a more sustainable rate, whilst the middle and upper markets will flat-line (a situation that could be helped by a cut in stamp duty land tax). The shortage of housing in Merton won’t change due to a temporary slowing of demand, especially with 80% of young renters wanting to buy their first home. Since Wimbledon has just been named 3rd most desirable place to live in the UK for young professionals, in the top 20 list by Lloyds Bank, with every day that passes we see more reason to keep calm and be positive.

“...a fitness workout that’s more like a night out...”
Research shows that a 150-pound adult can actually burn approximately 150 calories doing 30 minutes of social dancing. The best part is you’re not even thinking about losing the weight while doing it. Who would have thought you could have fun and lose weight at the same time?!
Shelly is hosting a launch event in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support at the Tunnel 267 Club in Wimbledon, Wednesday 28th of September at 7.30pm. Booking essential.. @shellyvpalmer 07969 333185 fabuliciousfitness.co.uk darlingmagazine.co.uk | sept-oct 2016

NOTHING FISHY ABOUT GUY DORRELL’S FAIRCATCH
F
aircatch is a Community Supported Fishery or local fish box scheme that brings super-fresh, sustainable fish to south-west London including Wimbledon, direct from fishermen. We pay them a fair price for their catch and support only those using low-impact, environmentally-sound fishing methods. Our fish are often only hours out of the water and our aim is to encourage our membership to eat a wider range of locally-caught species, which is good for fish stocks. Our recent practical food education projects were partly inspired by the research from Asda which showed that 25% of a sample of kids questioned thought haddock was a footballer and, worryingly, 10% thought fish was grown in a supermarket or a garden pond! This is perhaps unsurprising given that the vast majority of fish consumed in the UK is battered or pre-packaged fillets and that over 80% is restricted to just five (often imported) species – cod, salmon, tuna, haddock and prawns – so children don’t often have a chance to see a whole fish or get much of an idea about where it comes from. faircatch.co.uk 07810 753 815

The Last Of The Summer Wine... Pam Custers - Relationship Therapist
W
imbledon has come and gone and many of us have had our much awaited summer break. It’s a funny old time, summer. It’s filled with huge expectations. So much hinges on these few weeks where we rekindle our relationships with our loved ones. To spend time that is not hurried or pressurized. Life is fast, we can easily find ourselves with our back up against work and home stress. Taking the pressure off can be a time to recalibrate, to redefine what direction we want our lives, loves and careers to go. It is no surprise that holidays can sometimes be a bit of a mixed bag. Exploring what it is people want from their lives and their relationships is central to my practice. It can often be a challenge to get what we want and need from life and from our partners and discover why we find our relationships floundering as opposed to flourishing. Feeling connected is one of our primary needs; without it we can feel isolated and lonely. Making a conscious decision to reconnect with our lives and our loves is hugely empowering. Taking charge of our life is about setting our course and knowing where we are heading. I hope you have had a wonderful summer and have come back recharged and renewed.

School’s Out!
By Kate Greenhalgh
A
Catholic friend once said to me, “Either I’m doing something you’re not, or you’re doing something I’m not.” She was referring to my 5 kids versus her sensible 1. Well, no comment, but one thing I have been doing as a result of so many nippers is SCHOOL RUNS, since ye olden days of 1993. It ended this summer. The very last time I dropped off at a school gate, after an unbroken stint of 23 years. So, as Jo Brand would say, “Down the pub or back to bed?” If you think I expect some sort of medal for being able to turn up day after day for so long, you are damn right. You probably avoided profligate legions of small-fry monopolising the entire flower of your youth, so you know the normal path - a few years of arriving smartly dressed, humble-bragging about precocious grade 4 clarinet achievements, keenly joining the knots of committee-hungry mothers ravenous for donations to the toy tombola, (and I speak as the former Obergruppenführer of the Harvest Festival Working Party) then the slide sets in - tracky bottoms, no mascara and no message. Dave the builder won’t mind doing the pick-up in his van just this once on his way to Champion Timber, (I still haven’t been forgiven by my daughter for that one.) Skulking past the Class Rep with your hoodie up to avoid going on any rotas becomes a way of life. Eventually you don’t even get out of the car, and propel your child like a human cannonball from the passenger side. At least that way you don’t embarrass them by appearing in public. The logical endpoint is they can actually walk 46

mine were ok with that, as they trudged through the snow barefoot, but they kept getting offered lifts by horrified other mothers, which defeated the object. I did fight this decline. When you were already at no mascara stage, I was still masquerading as a box-fresh tiger mom. Such a fraud. Secretly supremely relaxed that so-and-so’s kid won a prize, or got a big part in the play, and not mine. Sneakily chucking away the form for Kumon Maths some kind mother passed on. Begging my child to give up the clarinet. I was living a lie! Anyway, a new term dawns, but no more that little journey of companionable silence. Do I miss the school run after all these years? Of course I do.
