editor’s letter Dear Darling Reader, The new year brought a time for reflection with Bowie, Rickman and Lemmy, three great icons our time, taken by cancer way too soon. So perhaps it’s fitting that our inspiring local women, Gail McCarthy-ter Haar and Nandita deSouza are global pioneers in cancer diagnosis and treatment. It never ceases to amaze me how blessed Wimbledon is with so many remarkable people, some recognised around the world, some doing amazing things in humble but no less important ways. Take intrepid teenage explorer Sam Halligan and his young friends who completed a Rally in Mongolia driving a 1.2l Skoda and covering 12 000 miles. Now that’s remarkable! To honour the spirit of great music in the 70s, Elaine Miller shares her memories of working with Lemmy and some serious metal bands. Talking of music, the dream of Wimbledon’s own Concert Hall is coming ever closer to reality, and, who knows, we may even see Jim Hawkins and others directing local choirs in such a fabulous space. We can but dream! Spring is here and new lust for life, love and improving our looks is on our agendas on the body, soul and home front. Our teeth, hair, skins and bodies are all being royally looked after this issue. So sit back and enjoy a good read. Until April…

Wimbledon’s Pioneers Gail McCarthy-ter Haar and Nandita deSouza tackling cancer together

G

ail McCarthy-ter Haar has lived in Wimbledon for 38 years. She moved there while she was studying for her PhD in Medical Physics at Guy’s Hospital, and convinced her husband when they married that it was a great place to bring up a family. Their three children all attended local schools. After her Oxford physics degree, Gail specialised in Medical Physics, then a relatively new field. She became fascinated by the huge range of medical applications of ultrasound, sound waves at frequencies too high to be heard by the human ear. Apart from its well-known application in uterine pregnancy scans, ultrasound can be used to diagnose problems in many other organs of the body, to help the physiotherapist heal soft tissue injuries, and, at very much higher power levels, to attack cancers. Gail has spent much of her working life at in the physics department at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), attached to the Royal Marsden Hospital, trying to understand the way in which ultrasound interacts with the human body so that it can be used safely as a diagnostic tool, and effectively for therapy. She has built and tested a number of therapy ultrasound devices. In her spare time, Gail likes to paint, keep fit, read and help Merton Macmillan Cancer Relief raise money for local projects. Nandita deSouza has been a Wimbledon resident since 1987. With her and her husband’s medical careers to manage, the excellent transport links in Wimbledon were ideal for getting to a number of major hospitals, especially outside normal working hours! She too started her training at Guy’s hospital, as a junior radiologist, then moving to an academic position at Hammersmith Hospital in West London and finally to the Institute of Cancer Research and Royal Marsden 12 years ago, where she and Gail started their successful partnership. Her abiding interest has always been in “high-tech” imaging, particularly Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and exploiting it for delivering treatment. Over several years, she has been involved in the development of a variety of medical devices to improve early diagnosis using MRI and enable biopsy under MRI guidance. Nandita enjoys bird-watching, exploring Wimbledon’s green spaces with her binoculars. Gail and Nandita met each other at the ICR. Nandita’s expertise in medical imaging and interventional radiology, combined with her track record of translating new techniques from the laboratory into the clinic were exactly what Gail needed to move the research she had been doing into clinical practice. Gail is a pioneer of a technique known as High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU). Just as a magnifying glass can be used to set light to dry leaves by focusing the sun’s rays into a tight spot, so can high powered ultrasound beams be

concentrated into a small region, and used to “cook” the cells there. The exciting aspect of HIFU is that no other cells and tissues are heated, and so, for example, it is possible to target cancers while sparing the tissues around, thus reducing side effects. While physicists such as Gail and her team can develop the systems that can provide this local “cooking”, these are useless without a clinical radiologist who can decide exactly where the region to be targeted lies, and the safest route for the ultrasound beam to reach it. This is what makes the collaboration between Nandita and Gail so successful. Although Gail’s team have developed home built systems to test this technique, it was not until an American charity (the Focused Ultrasound Foundation) combined with the European medical equipment company, Philips, to install, at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton, a clinical HIFU system, that it was possible to start clinical trials. In the first trial, they are aiming to relieve or eliminate pain caused by secondary bone tumours. Using Nandita’s expertise, the part of the bone surface likely to be the origin of the pain is identified, and then HIFU is used to burn away the nerve endings, and, where possible, some of the tumour itself. Although this is not a cure, the relief of pain has been significant in the majority of the patients treated this way so far, thus improving their quality of life. Future trials will concentrate on patients with previously treated cancers that have subsequently recurred and for whom no other standard treatments are available. As with all treatments, the balance between efficacy and potential harm is a critical consideration, so Gail and Nandita will continue their close partnership to ensure that the technique is used wisely in each individual patient to best advantage. In 2015, they managed 4 family weddings (Gail 2 daughters and 1 son, and Nandita 1 daughter), so 2016 should be relatively plain sailing in comparison! For more info go to www.icr.ac.uk

HAVE WE GOT NEWS FOR YOU! From newsagent to luxury dental clinic - the Patel family’s inspiring story

Dr Anand Patel (dentist), Neha Patel, Ramila Patel, Bipin Patel, Dipen Patel, Asha Patel, Dr Nisha Patel (dentist), Deepesh Upadhyay.

I

nfinitidental Clinic is a private dental practice in SW19 opposite the newly revamped Nelson Medical Centre. The clinic has a strong family connection, opening four years ago on the site of the family’s newsagent. Bob and Jenny Patel ran the shop for almost 30 years and were well respected in the local community before their children took over and totally transformed it into this clinic. The first patients to the clinic were former customers of the family’s newsagent business to which the partners thank for their support. Infinitidental Clinic offers a wide range of treatments including examinations, dental hygiene, fillings, root canals, crowns, veneers, bridges, dental implants as well as cosmetic treatments such as teeth whitening, orthodontics and wrinkle reducing treatments.

The health of the patients’ teeth and gums is what matters most to the dentists at Infinitidental Clinic. The four dentists working here - Dr Anand Patel, Dr Nisha Patel, Dr Kajal Patel and Dr Kevin Dapaah are passionate about preventative dentistry with minimal intervention to ensure that the health of the tooth and gums can be maintained without causing unnecessary and unwanted damage to the tooth and surrounding teeth. “We believe in conducting ethical dentistry to the highest standard,” says Dr Nisha Patel. “This is reflected in our treatment plans where various options are discussed with patients so we can offer them the appropriate solutions at a fair price.”

“Choosing the right dentist is fundamental to the health of you and your family. Your dentist should not just be well qualified and professional but should help you minimise dental treatment through regular preventative care. Children under 18 are examined for free if their parents are registered here and regularly attend the clinic.” A lot of thought has gone into the contemporary design and style of the clinic to make patients feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible. “As you step through the door you enter an open and airy reception, greeted by our smiling staff. On going through to the surgery, you will have the luxury of choosing whether to watch a TV programme or listen to music via a screen installed on the ceiling. We have a created a modern environment for a five star experience”. 146 Merton Hall Rd Wimbledon SW19 3PZ 020 8542 2171 infinitidentalclinic.com darlingmagazine.co.uk | feb-mar 2016

Darling chats to Elaine Miller, a Senior Data Analyst who has lived in the Village for 25 years

F

ather was a fan of Skiffle and Lonnie Donnegan in the 60s - and mother was a Carpenters and Neil Diamond fan come the 70s. It was slim pickings. I remember playing Gene Pitney and Elvis singles on a red and tan record player that used to buzz a lot - it was all lacking musically. One day I discovered the Man in Black! Oh the heady days of Jonny Cash. That was when I begun to define my style. I started to wear a lot of black, cowboy boots and hats - I had found my look! It wasn’t a look that blended in to the wealthy suburbs of sleepy Hampshire! Through my love of Jonny Cash, I found like-minded people - and from there (don’t ask me how!) I found Lemmy’s band Hawkwind! With some of the older boys in my school, I started going to as many gigs as I could! Hammersmith Odeon was a favourite - much to the consternation of my parents who thought heavy rock was all about drugs and Jack Daniels… I met some amazing people including Lemmy (many times), Motorhead, Iron Maiden (who offered me a job to go touring with them - but my father said No!), Girlschool, Rush and Triumph – signed programmes, back stage passes; I was living the dream – and a true Rock Chick was born! Photograph: Taylor Torr

Some of Elaine’s old music memorabilia

I spent hours on motorbikes going to and from Rock festivals (including Reading before it was uber cool), drank lots of beer and when I missed my train slept overnight on station platforms. I guess my love of live music has bought me to where I am today. Whilst it makes me very sad about the recent deaths of Lemmy and Bowie, I’m still a Rock Chick, still love live music and still try and promote the fantastic talent that we have in our area. How I ended up working in Investment Banking I will never know, but hey, I can do both!”

IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR Elite Car Service in Raynes Park for 26 years

M

anager, Carly Lewin chats to darling: “My dad Chris, was working as a mini cab driver in Raynes Park in the late 1980’s. He quickly realised that Raynes Park was a good area to work in, with friendly inhabitants and great businesses to work alongside. He felt the area would benefit from a more premier company and one where the drivers were more professional and wore smarter attire. In 1990, he secured a lease on the shop and started from scratch, totally on his own. He worked all the hours he could, and I can remember going out with my parents, brothers and sister, putting cards through people’s doors.

Dad was extremely motivated and worked hard. Within two years Elite had grown and had become an established business in Raynes Park. It was the first mini cab company in the area to enforce a shirt and tie dress code, as well as a non smoking office and no smoking in the cars. The tragedy of 9/11 affected the business more than we could have imagined. The majority of our work is to and from the airport, and suddenly no one was travelling. Elite managed to get through it and is still standing strong today. Before: Raynes Park in the early 90’s I started to work for the family business initially as a Saturday telephonist. After going to university and obtaining a degree and a masters, I took over the company full time. Elite is open 24 hours, and has 12 office staff members, 9 of which are women. We have a number of women drivers, Top photograph: Carly Lewin with her dad Chris

which we would like to increase in this male dominated industry. I have been running Elite for 6 years now, and people still find it unusual that a woman is in charge. Understanding women’s safety on a journey, especially if alone, is paramount. We have a priority service where the booking will be placed as high ranking, especially late at night. Elite has a number of big contracts such as St Georges, British rail and Dial a Ride. However, Elite values all of its customers and is pleased to report that customer and driver retention is very high. We have customers who have used us since we opened. We are constantly striving to improve our service and meet our customer’s needs. Elite has had a computer despatch and booking system called Cordic for many years now. We have now progressed to having an app for bookings, as well as an online booking system on our updated and functional website.” Carly Lewin Elite Car Service 020 8944 7000 elitecarservice.com darlingmagazine.co.uk | feb-mar 2016

Let your talent shine Darling Editor, Karine Torr rekindles her love for the craft of sewing

I

recently thought I would have a rare afternoon of self-indulgence and learn a new skill. Joining a sewing class at The Forest Bailiff, I was greeted with a warm welcome to their stunning studio. My fellow sewers were, a mother & daughter sharing a pre wedding afternoon together, a retired RAF widower with past sewing skills and a lovely lady, undergoing cancer treatment, in need of a break. In no time at all our heads were down at our machines and we were learning the ropes. Joanna’s calm demeanor and patient approach lead to a very relaxed and productive afternoon. She was able to impart her knowledge to the group, giving individual attention aimed at our varying abilities. All the fabrics supplied, of course, reflect the impeccable style of The Forest Bailiff and delicious refreshments kept us fuelled throughout!

Photography Genevieve Stevenson

By the end of a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon we each left with a piece to be proud of. I have now resurrected my own sewing machine so I can keep my hand in. My lovely neighbour, Natalie was so impressed with my ‘creations’ that she did Joanna’s advanced course and has been producing the most gorgeous, professional looking cushion covers for her bedroom and lounge ever since. She is like a demon possessed and I can’t get a cup of coffee in edgeways! I see that Portraiture has been added to the timetable of expanding workshops – get the kettle on - I am ready to learn another skill . . . A SPRING IN YOUR STEP AND FABULOUS HAIR TO MATCH Start the new season at Organic Masters

S

pring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party!” said the late Robin Williams. We can definitely feel that atmosphere of new birth and the potential for sunshine and warmth again after the winter months, especially when the blossoms and daffodils start to appear. Life without hats, gloves and boots. This gives us a chance to focus on our hair again - unfettered and flowing! This spring we would like to introduce Luciano Lima, a Brazilian hairdresser for 23 years in Brazil and in the UK who has been working in Wimbledon Village for over 12 years. He is very well known and loved in these parts and has taken over the management of OMG, spreading his passion for hair colour, highlights and a deep knowledge of the award winning John Masters Organics range of products which are totally chemical free. Organic Masters is a hair and beauty salon working exclusively with organic products.

DARLING SPECIAL OFFER 10% off on your first visit. Ends 31st March 2016. Terms & conditions apply.

Specialising in ammonia free hair colour and organic skin and hair care, Organic Masters has been providing a fresh, alternative approach to hairdressing in the Village. Only organic or environmentally friendly products are used at the basins and we offer an extensive range of organic skin treatments and products, exclusively using John Masters Organics skin and hair care. “Our USP at OMG is that we don’t ‘experiment’ on your hair,” says Luciano, “Our main aim is to keep it healthy and in good condition. We like to think of ourselves as your very own ‘hair doctors’! However, if this spring gives you inspiration to try something new, then please book in for a free 15 min consultation to discuss your ideas. We are all ears!” LUCIANO’S TOP TIP: Make sure you drink lots of water to keep your skin and scalp hydrated, especially after the winter when the heating is constantly on indoors.

SCARED OF GOING UNDER ‘THE KNIFE’?

Beauty expert, Zara Elliott has a great alternative

Collagen Stimulation Therapy™ Is it really the non-surgical treatment that achieves surgical results? Collagen Stimulation Therapy™ (CST) - sounds pretty intimidating, right? Even more so when referred to by its other names of Collagen Induction Therapy or Percutaneous Collagen Induction. Yet this aesthetic treatment has been used in the medical field to help treat burn scars for quite some time. Now it’s really making waves within the aesthetic industry as the latest solution to treat skin, without resorting to surgery. Industry expert Zara answers your burning questions. “Just what is involved in a Collagen Stimulation Therapy™ session?” The treatment involves thousands of tiny needle pricks to the skin. The resultant bleeding initiates the release of platelets, which in turn release a cascade of growth factors. This is what stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, resulting in a tighter, smoother and younger looking skin. One of the key growth factors released (TGF B3) is normally only found in foetal tissue and is responsible for initiating scarless healing. “Can I really expect surgical worthy results from this treatment?” CST is a treatment used to stimulate collagen production and tighten skin. It combines micro-needling, performed by a trained professional, with topical vitamin skincare. It is indicated for wrinkles, acne scarring, slack skin, stretch marks and burn scars and can also be used to help tighten skin after liposuction. It has also been shown to significantly lighten pigmentation marks. It’s safe to say that this truly can be seen as a wonder treatment. “How long will I be resigned to rest and recuperate?” You’re busy - your social and work calendar is probably packed out with commitments. Luckily, CST delivers maximum results with a superfast recovery time of between 24 and 72 hours. “We women are constantly told about the upcoming revolutionary product or beauty service that’s the next ‘big thing’, so much so it can all become ‘white noise’. But after having had 6 CST treatments, I can honestly say that this is the non-surgical option for those seeking dramatic results”. MAKING L VE LAST With Therapist Pam Custers

I

t is that time of year. Love songs are being played and the price of red roses seems to go through the sky. My life is spent thinking, talking and researching love and what makes it last. I was fascinated to read John Gottman’s psychological research into what makes love last and the five indicators he identified. His work in his relationship lab is able to tell within 94% accuracy if a relationship will last or not. So what are these five areas and how can we cultivate and strengthen them in order to bolster the love? Love lasts if we are able to relate tales that have warmth, affection and respect for each other. If we think and speak about our relationship with fondness and admiration we foster it.

So before you rush off to buy your card perhaps we could all look towards these five areas. Genuine fondness, making the relationship central, keeping connected, pulling together through tough times and feeling satisfied. If you are struggling to keep the love alive take heart and know that if we take charge of our relationships we are able to turn things around. In my experience small changes makes all the difference. Pam Custers is an experienced therapist working with individuals, couples and families.

Keeping the focus on “we” as opposed to “me”. Having a clear sense of being in this together and working as a team even if there are disagreements. Truly knowing our partner. The trick here is keeping a real connection and understanding how our partner ticks. Being curious about what our partner thinks or feels about things keeps us connected. All relationships face hardships along the way. Love thrives if they can be seen as a way in which a couple pulls together and over comes adversity. Having a relationship that lives up to expectation or better still perhaps surpasses it in some ways, bodes well. Feeling satisfied and letting our partner know engenders love.

COVER GIRL DANIELLE CLEOBURY Shares her top events tips

C

reating a new event is an emotional journey. From Big Screen Tennis on The Piazza to the Summer Pop-Up or Winter Ice Show in St Mark’s Place, I’ve had the great pleasure and challenge of introducing a variety of new events to Wimbledon and have the ‘laughter lines’ to prove it! I find the process hugely rewarding and reaching the ‘it’s a success’ moment makes the sleepless nights worth it. Here are some tips to help you survive the ride… 1. Why hold the event? What do you want to achieve and who do you want to come? These questions should drive all of your planning.

2. Know your venue and your team. Whether it’s the ceiling height or your access time for set-up, ask as many questions as early as you can about the venue and get to know who you’re working with so you can best allocate roles to people’s strengths. 3. Don’t let the ‘what have I got myself into’ moment beat you. You’re being imaginative and taking risks, it’s all part of the creative process. Pour yourself another cuppa and keep going. 4. Check, check and check again… Walk yourself through the event from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, considering everything you might need and everything that could go wrong.

5. Have an event emergency kit. You never know how thankful you might be for a safety pin or hazard tape. Trust me! Danielle Cleobury Marketing and Events Manager at Love Wimbledon lovewimbledon.org

Lunch in the Duke of Northumberland’s private dining room at Syon House with Lady Caroline Percy

We are working hard on the website to make it even easier to post recommendations and to find the things you are looking for. Look out for our new design coming soon! Our events are always very popular and have been a huge success. They offer RHC members a unique way to come together, connect and learn something new. This is what makes RHC different. The power and reach of our network is great with new connections being made every day both online and through our events. There’s a great buzz and energy and an enthusiasm for what we’re doing. Together with Events Director, Caroline Edwards, we’ve held an exclusive evening at the Rose Theatre, Kingston, a get together for members of school PTAs, a private behind-the-scenes tour of Syon House and a very special evening with a world leading diamond expert. Recently, we held an inspiring evening about women’s cycling. We also ran a morning of talks and workshops to help and guide women considering a return to work. In response to our members’ requests, we are planning more workshops focused on IT, Social Media and other skills to help the journey back to work. We are also launching a series of talks on women’s health, art gallery visits as well as more theatre trips and a special treat around Valentine’s Day.”

“A spectacular evening – so well organised with an amazing setting. The talk was so entertaining and informative. Thank you heaps and really looking forward to the next event.”

World Class Wimbledon Concert Hall A real possibility explains campaigner, Anthony Wilkinson

M

erton Council are about to begin a master plan for Future Wimbledon in the next few months. For years there has been a move to create a world-class, acoustically superb, concert hall on the P3 Hartfield Road car park (behind the Odeon). With your help there is a real chance of this happening. The P3 site becomes available early 2019, when the car parking covenant ends. The Council intend to put the site open to public tender during 2017. The site is designated to include Cultural purposes, with the Council favouring a mixed development including retail, and offices. The Wimbledon Concert Hall group is working to stake a claim to the site by demonstrating a robust business case, an exciting cultural programme that would give access to community performing groups, have an extensive educational remit, develop a thriving Arts District and community, creating a stunning environment to give real soul and character to a regenerated Wimbledon Town Centre. Buildings cost a lot to run, cultural programmes inevitably need support. Sustainability is everything. Our plan is to double the car park to 300, going underground, with retail on the ground floor, and cultural facilities and offices above. Revenue from parking, retail and office rental would endow the cultural programme.

Inspirations for The Wimbledon Concert Hall...

...a larger New World Symphony Hall

We are already some way towards the £100,000 we need to engage major consultants to prepare business plans, and Grimshaw Architects to produce concept massing plans with models for the site. Everyone can play a part in these life-enhancing plans by pledging support. We are seeking 6 donations of £5000, 10 of £3000, and 40 of £1000. But we are keen to build a community of support so whatever you can do to help will be much appreciated and acknowledged. AS SAFE AS HOUSES? Writes Gary Score, Partner in Residential Property at Hart Brown

Do you know that anyone can obtain a copy of the title to your property? Prior to December 1990; if the title to your home or other property was registered at the Land Registry it was not open to public scrutiny. This had been the position since the late 19th Century when the concept of Registered Land was first introduced. In the main it was necessary to get your consent as the owner, before a prospective purchaser could have access to the register. 32

feb-mar 2016 | darlingmagazine.co.uk

Such consent was usually given after exchange of contracts in the property sale. In order to allow developers and other interested parties to identify the ownership of land more easily, the registered title was opened up to the public to allow anybody to find out, where land is registered, who the owner of the land is and obtain a copy of that persons title together with details of any covenants, rights, obligations and easements registered against the title together with any mortgages.

Authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (490290) Authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority

Gary Score

Goodbye title deeds.

In 2002 all registered titles in England and Wales were digitised and the old paper Land Certificates and Charges certificates became redundant. Roll forward to today and the digitisation of the registered titles, subject to payment of the necessary fee to the Land Registry, means anyone can access the title to your property. This, added to the increased incidence of identity fraud, has opened a new avenue to possible fraudsters. There have been a number of instances reported in the press of fraudsters posing as the owners of registered property and selling it on to an unsuspecting buyer. Whilst the fraudster is not able to pass the ownership of the property to the innocent buyer, one can imagine the anxiety the legitimate owner goes through as a result of being the victim of this type of crime. The innocent buyer stands to lose all of the monies paid over to the fraudster who needless to say will usually disappear into the ether.

So how easy is it for fraud to take place?

Initially the fraudster needs to steal the identity of, and masquerade as, the owner of the targeted property. The estate agent and solicitor must by law carry out identity checks on potential sellers, however, if their processes are less than robust, this makes the fraudster’s task that much easier and adds an air of legitimacy to their scheme.

What can you do to protect yourself?

It makes sense if you are a home owner to take certain steps to reduce the risk of your property being fraudulently sold or, in

some cases, mortgaged. Properties that are particularly at risk are those where the owner does not live there because they live overseas or in some other part of the country, rent it out, or the property is empty for long periods and not mortgaged. If you think that you may fall into any of the categories or just for peace of mind you may wish to consider the following options. The Land Registry has devised two main ways to try to alleviate the situation: 1. The placing of a restriction on your title so that no changes can be made to the Register without a solicitor or conveyancer certifying that the application is made by the registered proprietor. If you do not live at the property this is free, if you live at the property there is a fee of ÂŁ40. 2. You can also sign up to the Property Alert Service. If someone applies to change the register to your property you will be alerted by e-mail. It will not stop the changes, but you will be aware of activity on your title. Progress brings with it advantages but also new risks. Any steps the owner of a property can take to reduce those risks are recommended. We at Hart Brown can assist you in reducing risks associated with buying and selling property as well as advising and assisting on all types of legal matters. If you would like further information please feel free to call Gary 020 8947 8171 at our Wimbledon Village office. hartbrown.co.uk darlingmagazine.co.uk | feb-mar 2016

MONGOL RALLY 2015: TEAM NOMAD

Wimbledon’s Sam Halligan reports Crossing the Caspian Sea was a lottery, and Turkmenistan welcomed us with 50-degree heat and endless desert. The ‘Gateway to Hell’, the famous gas crater which has been burning for over 40 years, was a phenomenal sight. After navigating most of central Asia, we arrived at the Mongolian border where the real challenge began. Seven days of 1900km with no roads took its toil on the 1.2 litre Skoda. Endless river crossings, boulders to shift, but with resilience, grit and some luck, the “juniors” completed the challenge.

T

hree intrepid young explorers, Hannah Fagerstrom, Angus Mactaggart and myself, joined The Mongol Rally, one of the most grueling Pan continental rallies in the world and set off from Goodwood last year, crossing Europe into Asia over five mountain chains, three deserts, crossing 12,000 miles over some of the most isolated terrain on the planet, to the finish line in Ulan Ude, Russia. Europe was a doddle, completing the descent of the Transfagarasan highway in Romania (made infamous by Top Gear’s road trip) in under nine minutes. After Istanbul we crossed into Asia, encountering the corruption of Azerbaijan where the police were determined to extort $300 for a dubious traffic violation.

The nicest surprise post rally was finding out we were one of Cool Earth’s top fundraisers and as such have earned a trip to the Amazonian rain forest in April 2016 to see their work with the indigenous communities. Peru here we come!

South might have opened a quiet 1♠ and let the auction develop slowly but, fortified by much Christmas left over cheap Champagne, he punted a strong pre-empt: 4♠. North, in love with her hand was not to be put off – she jumped straight to 6♠. The bidding might have been unsubtle, but the contract is excellent. West led K♣, and South made a quick plan. When South wins trick one with A♣, if he leads a trump, West will win and cash Q♣ to defeat the contract. So, South must discard J♣ from hand before drawing trumps. Dazzled by North’s beautiful hearts, he played to A♥, K♥ and Q♥, pitching J♣ – but West trumped with 4♠, and still had A♠ to defeat the slam. South’s plan was good, but not optimal. N/S hold seven hearts between them, but only five diamonds, so it is less likely that an opponent will be short in that suit. At trick 2, South should play Q♦ from hand, then cross to K♦ and play A♦, on which he can safely throw J♣. He pushes out A♠ and, when he regains the lead, draws the final trump. Happy days – all bodes well for the rest of the year! aceoftrumps.com

HEALTHY TRANSFORMATION By Claire Cotton-May

ust imagine enjoying all life has to offer with complete peace of mind and a healthy income. I have achieved this and now coach and mentor people globally to achieve this too. Life wasn’t always like that for me. My background, a BBC Producer and Director on celebrity and lifestyle programmes like the Clothes Show, meant I worked long hours, earned a great income, but had no time to enjoy it.

The cost is £108.95 and available to order from www.healthyincome.cc/fit or call me on 07802411587 to order your C9 pack and receive a 15% discount and free delivery to your address.

The crazy hours I worked left me drained and dealing with a health condition called ME or chronic fatigue syndrome, but my life turned around when I started to look after myself better and used natural aloe vera products. I now have time to enjoy life, a significant global income and a very positive outlook on life.

For more info on the business opportunity, please get in touch via claire@healthyincome.cc, or Healthy Income Global on Facebook.

The 9 day cleanse that helped me reset my eating habits and improve my general wellbeing is called the C9. It was the most googled diet plan of 2015. Drinking aloe vera cleans your digestive system so that it works more effectively and absorbs all the vitamins, minerals and amino acids that naturally occur in this “live” aloe vera. This in turn boosts your energy levels; I feel like I have a real energy surge by day 3, it is fantastic! The supplements you take are “garcinia” which really gets to work on your old fat stores, and is a natural appetite suppressant and “therm” which helps to boost your metabolism over the 9 days plus the daily “fiber” sachet replenishes your fibre levels. The daily shake is nutritionally balanced and full of the right proteins; I have elite athletes that swear by this product for the C9 and post training sessions. All this is alongside a healthy 600 calorie meal once a day.

embrace change for your body with our strategic approach to better health...

The Ballad of Peckham Rye By Kate Greenhalgh

E

ven if you didn’t receive a Ladybird Book of Irony this Christmas, you must be aware of The Hipster phenomenon by now - young men looking like W C Grace, with a bit of Dalai Lama thrown in. The other day, I was very excited to see an actual hipster in Wimbledon - we must be at a really late stage of the curve for that to happen. He was walking a pug through the Village, in an immaculate tweed deerstalker. (The pug I mean, obviously.) But the hipster himself was presumably one of those unusual birds which twitchers go mad for - blown off course by El Nino, an aberration rather than a trend. How stupid of me. Wimbledon is too far west for hipsters. They have all migrated east, taking our children with them, like ket-bunned pied pipers. At first I was quite proud to have children who, if not hipsters, were firmly on the hipster spectrum, dabbling in pottery courses in Hoxton and home-made beard tonic; until I realised that with the authentic lifestyle, comes the authentic location. The kids have moved to Peckham. Have you tried driving to Peckham? Even on a reclaimed pennyfarthing, it’s a trek. The zeitgeist in my day, after pushing safety pins through our earlobes, was to become a Sloane Ranger, and aspire to Fulham. What have we done? Our city has hollowed itself out, and the youth have gone East. They have not gone to Fulham, which would be more convenient for their mothers. And we know who to blame for this. Us.

We have presided over a property price supernova, rubbing our hands with glee, nimbying out any affordable development, until, with faces falling, we watch our own children disappear over the horizon, lured by the prospect of a flat they can afford. Even those with interventions from the bank of mum and dad are going, because who wants to live away from friends in Nunhead, New Cross, Hackney and Clapton? Until Hipsterism is over and we see the rise of the neo-Sloane, get used to living in a deserted West London gerontocracy of ourselves. There’s only one thing for it for me - come to terms with the excellent 26 minute train service to Peckham Rye; or, they do say, nearby Dulwich is very nice for downsizers...
