Welcome to this month’s magazine for Darlington Borough Welcome to the July edition of Darlington Together
The next event isn’t necessary one for children, but it’s one close to my heart! I’m delighted that Rockcliffe Hall will be hosting the English Senior Open again next month – an event which will see 10,000 people come to JULY Darlington over the course of three days; a wonderful boost for our hotels, shops and restaurants. You can find out more about it on page 19.
You may or may not be aware that a new refuse and recycling collection starts in October, where rubbish will be collected one week and recycling the next. We’re keen to get the message out about this to all Darlington residents, so you know how the changes will affect you and what you will be able to recycle. Please visit pages 30 and 31 to find out more.
If you’ve had a quick flick through the magazine already, you will undoubtedly notice that there’s a lot of information about what’s on during the summer holidays, which start at the end of this month. There’s always lots taking place in Darlington, and we pride ourselves on the wide range of events taking place – whether your child is interested in arts, sports, or just making new friends. Check out pages 21 to 28 to find out more, or alternatively visit www.whatsonindarlington.co.uk

Tee-ing up for top event Darlington will be swinging into action in August as it plays host to the biggest sporting tournament to be held in the North East this year. Golf’s English Senior Open is taking place over the August Bank Holiday weekend (Friday 22 to Sunday 24 August) at Rockcliffe Hall and is set to attract 10,000 people to the Borough. Last year, golf fans from Darlington and beyond came to watch the event, which featured top European tour players such as Mark James, Barry Lane, Miguel Ángel Martín and Peter Fowler – with Denmark’s Steen Tinning claiming the title. “This is a fantastic scoop for Darlington and will bring huge economic benefits for the Borough as a whole. “It’s a chance for visitors to discover what Darlington has to offer and will bring a good boost to trade for hotels, B&Bs, cafes, restaurants and shops. “We’d encourage businesses to make the most of this event and the potential customer base that will be in the area.”
Individual day tickets cost £10 and season tickets (which cover all three days) cost £20. Junior day tickets for under 16’s are free. Tickets are available online and at venues throughout Darlington. Volunteers are also needed to ball-spot and help setup for the tournament. Find out more by calling 01325 729980 or visit www.rockcliffehall.com/englishsenioropen

Parks in Darlington Feeling the Love Friday 25 July to Sunday 3 August is Love Parks Week and Darlington’s beautiful parks will be joining hosts of others around the UK by putting on events, encouraging millions to get outside and show some love to their local park. Love Parks Week is a national initiative which has grown year on year. Falling on the first full week of the Summer holidays, it’s the perfect time to spend some time in one of Darlington’s parks, two of which (South Park and West Cemetery) have won the coveted Green Flag Award.
Messing about in The Denes Friday 25 July • 1-3pm • FREE A fun-filled afternoon of sports and crafts, families can come along with a picnic and explore The Denes, creating their own finger paintings of wildlife in the park to take home. Suitable for children under eight, meet at the Play Dene (Widdowfield Street).
Messing about in South Park Friday 1 August • 1-3pm • FREE Join the Rangers for an Alice in Wonderland themed craft session where children can come along dressed as their favourite characters from the story and make crafts, play games and join in to solve the prickly tickly trail. Suitable for 0-9 years, meet at the second bowling green at South Park.
Get involved in Park Life Love Parks Week is a great time to celebrate the work carried out in our parks. Throughout the year, hundreds of volunteers give their time to make Darlington’s parks a wonderful place to spend time. To find out more about Darlington parks or to volunteer, visit www.darlington.gov.uk/parks “As a member of the Friends of South Park I aim to do my bit to enhance and maintain the park. We have a garden club with several flower beds of our own which we plant and maintain and a new nectar border for bees and butterflies. We also do regular litter picks. I don’t enjoy clearing up behind other folk but would like to see South Park as a litter free zone and get the message across that rubbish spoils the park and is also hazardous to the local wildlife. We also raise funds for the group and have purchased picnic tables and have commissioned several carved wood sculptures. It’s great that I can do something I enjoy and also make a difference to a park I love.” Jan Bradshaw Volunteer with the Friends of South Park

Is your two year old child eligible for free childcare? We’re celebrating the fact that more Darlington children than ever are accessing their 15 hours of free childcare a week. When the scheme began in September 2009, 50 two-year olds were accessing free childcare. Over 260 two-year olds are now accessing free childcare!
Is my child eligible? Your child is eligible if: • They are being ‘looked after’ by the Council • They have left care through special guardianship, an adoption or residence order • They have a statement of Special Educational Needs or an Education, Health and Care plan • They attract Disability Living Allowance
Or if you receive the following benefits your child may be eligible: • Income Support • Income based Jobseekers Allowance • Income related Employment and Support Allowance • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 • The guarantee element of State Pension Credit • Child Tax Credit (provided you are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income that does not exceed £16,190) • Working Tax Credit and have annual gross earnings of no more than £16,190 per year. • Universal Credit If you are not eligible for free childcare, there still may be help available – contact People and Families’ Information Support (PFIS) on the details to the right.
Parents can access childcare for a maximum of 15 hours a week during term time. Some providers offer a ‘stretched’ offer where parents can access fewer hours a week over more weeks (including during the summer holidays) Parents are able to choose from a variety of private day nurseries, a maintained nursery, playgroups and childminders across the Borough. There are also plans to create funded places in Darlington schools this Autumn, increasing choice even further. This good quality childcare enables children to learn, make new friends, experience new activities and lets parents go back to work or go into further/higher education.
If you would like to know if your child is eligible, we can run a check over the phone if you have your National Insurance Number to hand. Contact PFIS on 0800 9172121 or pfis@darlington.gov.uk. More information is available online: www.darlington.gov.uk/freeearlyeducation

General RECYCLING Bin
+
You’ll get a BLACK caddy, which sits inside your recycling bin. Use this for paper, card and cardboard. If you have excess bulky cardboard, this can be placed at the side of your recycling bin and we’ll collect it.
GLASS Recycling Box No change from before. Use your existing GREEN box for recycling glass bottles and jars.
Why are you introducing this new system? We are changing this system to save £400,000 a year – money which can be used to help us continue to provide essential services in Darlington. The new system will also help boost Darlington’s already excellent recycling rates.

You currently have a green box for glass, a blue bag for paper and card, and a black wheeled bin for everything else. In October, this will change to one of two schemes, depending on where you live. Find out more about the changes below...
