Join us for summer in South Park What’s going on at South Park? There’s lots going on in South Park over the next few months – here are some of the main events. Friday 20 June: St Teresa’s Midnight Walk Take part in a magical midnight stroll around the park while raising money for charity. Thursday 26 June – Sunday 29 June: Theatre in the Park – Darlington Green Theatre bring their version of ‘The Tempest’ to the great outdoors. Sunday 13 July: Macmillan Toddle – A perfect way to spend time with your family, whilst raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Sunday 13 July: Our Big Gig: Back by popular demand, local bands will be playing a wide variety of music. Sunday 3 August: Big Biff ’s Fun Run – Take part in a 5km run with lots of entertainment! In aid of St. Teresa’s Hospice. Wednesday 6 August: National Play Day – Arts, crafts and fun activities for children and parents. In association with Groundworks.

Meet the Park Ranger We had a quick chat with Park Ranger Debbie who helps organise events in South Park and works with all the different groups who use the park.

South Park isn’t just a park these days – it’s a community hub. How many groups are involved with the park? Too many to mention – it’s great that so many people are involved with helping maintain and raise funds for the park, we couldn’t run the park without them. We work closely with the Friends of South Park, and are looking to work with the Street Champions too.

Is there anything planned for the future? Yes – we’re working with Groundworks and the Friends of South Park to build an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ themed area in the park. We’ve got the funding and plan to start the work in September. A quarter of kids spend less than half an hour a week playing outside, so we’re hoping that this new area will encourage kids and their parents to tell stories, explore and enjoy the wildlife.

What’s the most popular part of the park at the moment? The green gym is really popular – we launched it last summer and is used by many people, from those warming up for the Saturday parkrun, to those who wouldn’t normally exercise. There’s one older gentleman told us he uses the equipment every day when he visits the park, which is great to hear!

The People’s Parliament The People’s Parliament is a forum for people who have a learning impairment, sometimes called a learning disability. It aims to raise and tackle the issues which affect people with learning impairments and is supported by Darlington Association on Disability. It works with the Council to shape the services and support that disabled people want and need, recommending where resources can be best spent. For example, the group recently advised us on the priorities for people with a learning impairment, deciding that although day centres are good, what many people with a learning impairment really want is paid work. The council is now looking to provide more work opportunities including work experience, internships and paid work. The People’s Parliament is always open to new members, contact: parliament@darlingtondisability.org

The Café JJ team

Darlington College student Amy Teasdale is taking part in work experience sessions at The Student Loans Company. The 21-yearold is spending one day a week at the firm’s Darlington centre working alongside staff on their daily tasks. It’s part of a new programme between Foundation for Jobs, Darlington Council and Darlington College to provide young people with learning disabilities workplace experience. This increases their skills, builds their confidence and shows that they can perform well in a genuine business environment. Any businesses interested in taking part in the scheme should contact owen.mcateer@darlington.gov.uk

One place where people with a learning impairment can get valuable ‘on the job’ training is Café JJ in the Clifton Centre. Here, people can learn important skills in cooking, serving and waiting-on. Thirty four year old, Cheryl loves to volunteer and says since becoming part of Team JJ she has been able to increase her catering skills and now has lots of confidence when serving her customers as a waitress.

Have your say on proposed new housing sites for Darlington. Let us know what you think... You can let us know your views by: • Completing a comments form at www.darlington.gov.uk/mgp • Filling out a comments form available at the Town Hall Customer Service Centre or any of the Borough’s libraries • Email: planning.policy@darlington.gov.uk

Last year we asked for your views on the Making and Growing Places proposals about how the Borough should develop and received a great response.

• Write to: Freepost DL64, Planning Policy, Darlington Borough Council, Darlington DL1 5BS

We have taken into account your views and have revised our earlier plans. We now need to know what you think of these new proposals starting with where new homes should be built in Darlington until 2026.

We need to hear from you by Friday 4 July to ensure your views can be included as we develop Making and Growing Places.

Looking at market conditions and the shortfall in house building over recent years, we need to adjust our target to ensure that 6,200 new homes can be built in the Borough when, and where they are needed.

Come along and have your say

To encourage employment development, fewer homes than originally planned are likely to be built at town centre sites and some sites have been omitted altogether following your comments. At other sites, such as the Eastern Urban Fringe, near Red Hall more new homes are now planned and we have included some new sites to ensure we can deliver the housing needed. We want to know what you think about this. We are also asking residents about two options for housing and a new primary school and nursery in the Beaumont Hill / Harrowgate Hill area. All housing site proposals are available to read on our website, www.darlington.gov.uk/mgp or at the Town Hall Customer Service Centre or at the libraries. Our website also shows a map so you can see whether any housing sites are planned in your area and how the original proposals have changed.

• Call 01325 388644.

You can find out more about the new housing proposals, and give your views, by coming along to one of our drop-in consultation events at: • St Mary’s Cockerton Community Centre Wednesday 18 June, 4.30-6.30pm • St Andrew’s Church Hall, Haughton Le Skerne Thursday 19 June, 5pm – 7pm • Whessoe Parish Hall Wednesday 25 June, 5pm-7pm • Darlington Outdoor Market Saturday 28 June, 10am - 2pm • Gurney Pease Academy, Dodsworth Street Monday 30 June, 5pm -7pm.

Get help with energy costs Winter might seem a long way off but now is the perfect time to get help to make your home warmer and more energy efficient with the Warm up North scheme. We’re working with British Gas to deliver this scheme which aims to help Darlington residents make their homes more energy efficient, this means a warmer home and lower heating bills. Through the Warm up North scheme you might be able to get help with a new central heating boiler, loft insulation, cavity wall or solid wall insulation.

Big Community Switch You could save money on your gas and electricity bills by signing up to the Big Community Switch in Darlington. The Big Community Switch brings together a lot of people to buy energy. The more people that join up, the greater the buying power to get cheaper energy bills. More than 100 households in Darlington have saved up to £223 in the first round. The second round is now open until 9 June. Visit www.darlington.gov.uk/bigcommunityswitch to register.

To find out how you could make your home more energy efficient, British Gas will carry out a free assessment to tell you where you could make improvements and if there is any help available to fund the improvements. Since the scheme launched more than 250 residents in the region have benefitted from a warmer home and lower bills. The scheme covers private and rented homes, social housing and publicly owned buildings.

Getting involved with Warm Up North is as easy as one two three…

1

Contact the team on 0800 294 8073 or visit www.warmupnorth.com to find out if you may be eligible for assistance.

2

If eligible, a Warm Up North assessor will carry out a simple survey of your home and recommend a tailored package of improvements to help make the property more energy efficient.

3

Warm Up North will manage your application through to the installation of your new energy efficiency measures, helping you to look forward to a warmer home and cheaper heating bills.

Stay up-to-date with Warm Up North by following @WarmUpNorth1 on Twitter and like facebook.com/warmupnorth.

John Pybus, 81 and John Paylor, 70 are residents at Dinsdale Court, one of the Council’s retirement housing complexes for the over 50s. Cycle lockers have recently been installed following requests from residents for somewhere safe to store their bikes. The pair cycle most days, sometimes up to 20 miles. They choose early mornings or evenings to venture out, when it’s quiet and enjoy taking in the fresh air. They are both sure that cycling helps them to control their weight, keep fit and stay sane! They both agree that the cycle routes in and around Darlington are ‘excellent’ and a great way to cycle safely.

Following our successful bid for £2.4 million of government money, work to repair damage to the A67 between Piercebridge and High Coniscliffe caused by a landslip is well underway. Phase one, which saw Northumbrian Water carry out tests in advance of the main works starting, is now complete. Phases two and three, which will see the road closed from 2 June, will begin shortly. We know that phases two and three will mean a significant period of disruption for residents, businesses, visitors and commuters and we are doing all we can to keep this to a minimum. We’ve held a series of information events with the communities that will be affected by the road closure and where possible have adapted plans to accommodate their views. The road is a vital link between Darlington and Teesdale so it’s important that we do get it fixed.

The two remaining phases of works are: Phase two: will see the road closed from 2 June 2014. This will enable Northumbrian Water to divert pipes out of the unstable section of road. This will take approximately four months.

Phase three: The road will remain closed so that we can stabilise the 387m of unstable embankment and road. The road will remain closed through phases two and three from 2 June 2014 to April 2015.

Map: Chris Moran

On the road to recovery

What is the diversion route? The diversion route is the B6275, B6279 Staindrop Road, B6280 Carmel Rd North and A67 Coniscliffe Road and vice versa. Ulnaby lane will be open through all three phases of works, while the A67 will be closed between the Ulnaby junction and the B6275 junction during the road closure. Durham Lane will be closed throughout works with the exception of access for residents. There will be no way through and it will in effect be a culde-sac. Access for pedestrians (including dismounted cyclists) will be maintained at all times where possible.

How will public transport be affected? The Arriva bus service no.s 75/76/76A will run a half hourly service diverted via Staindrop Road. A taxi bus will run from High Coniscliffe to Darlington for the bus route cut off by the closure. Are you a Carer? Carers Week 9 – 15 June 2014 Did you know that one in eight of us are carers looking after an ill, frail or disabled family member or friend and every day 6,000 people in the UK take on new caring responsibilities? You may be one of them.

Judy’s story Judy lives in Darlington and cares for her partner Jay. Several years ago, Jay had surgery on her neck. This did not go as planned and Jay developed difficulties with her speech, coordination and balance and also sight problems. Before surgery, both Judy and Jay worked full time but after her surgery, Jay was unable to work and Judy became her full time carer and had to learn how to assist her to wash and dress, and all the other day-to-day tasks. Judy also had to learn how to cook. The couple found life very hard. Then Judy saw a Darlington Association on Disability (DAD) Carers Support Service poster in her doctor’s surgery. She got in touch and now she knows that you are not alone, with support at the end of the phone from staff and other carers that she has met through the support groups that DAD runs.

Carers Week, 9 – 15 June 2014, is a national event to celebrate and recognise the contribution of all of the UK’s 6 million unpaid carers.

If you are a carer living in Darlington, help is at hand all year round. To mark Carers Week there will be a range of events to offer more information. See below for details or for more information visit: www.carersweek.org
