Learning & Skills

Welcome I am delighted to welcome you to our 2016/2017 downloadable prospectus for Darlington Borough Council Learning & Skills. We are an Ofsted rated grade 2 provider offering a wide range of learning opportunities for all ages from children within our Family Learning provision, to young people embarking on Elev8, Diplomas, Traineeships and Apprenticeships, to adults who want to develop their careers, have a love for learning or are coming back to learning after many years. We are based at the Coleridge Centre in Skerne Park and we deliver some of our courses here. However, you will see from our prospectus that we also offer courses in many other locations around the town. We are quite a small organisation and we pride ourselves in offering you a unique, friendly service, including 1:1 guidance on your next steps in learning or employment once you have completed a course with us. We are here to help provide Darlington’s community with the learning you want and we positively welcome any feedback you may have about the type of courses you would like to see in Darlington. Please contact us (01325 405601, text on 07932 869325 or l&s@darlington.gov.uk) for further information about any of our courses – we would love to hear from you. Best wishes

Alaine McCartney Manager, Learning & Skills Darlington Borough Council

Graham Curry, Apprenticeship Trainer said, "During the three and a half years I have taught Luke he has always worked to the best of his ability both in the classroom and workshop environment and been a pleasure to teach.”

The course will also enable you to develop your maths and English skills (if required) in order to support your progression. Progression from this programme would be an Apprenticeship Scheme with Darlington Borough Council Learning & Skills or a Level 3 Diploma. • Luke Reynolds completed the Diploma in July 2013 and was offered employment at Gregg Little Testing. Traineeships Traineeships are offered to 16-24 year olds in Business Administration, Childcare, Health and Social Care, Site Joinery and Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair. They last up to 6 months and enable the learner to complete vocationally related qualifications and industry related qualifications. The course involves classroom based lessons, workshop experience and work experience, as well as an opportunity to build on maths and English skills. We will need to secure employers prior to learners starting the course, as this is a funding requirement.

Raising of the Participation Age All young people are now required to continue in education or training until their 18th birthday. This does not necessarily mean staying on in school. You can choose how you participate post-16, which could be through: (a) Full-time education at a school, college, or other training provider, such as Learning & Skills (a minimum of 540 hours per year) (b) An Apprenticeship (c) Part-time education or training if you are employed, self-employed or volunteering for 20 hours or more a week

Service to Secondary Schools – Alternative Provision We offer high quality alternative provision for 14 - 16 year olds (including English and maths) at the Coleridge Centre - a safe and calm learning environment. Students work 1:1 or in small groups on a personalised timetable leading to accredited qualifications, including individual help to progress to post-16 learning or employment. 18 01325 405601 • l&s@darlington.gov.uk • www.darlington.gov.uk/learningandskills

Employers’ Information Learning & Skills is looking for employers to offer Apprenticeships and high quality work experience to young people within Darlington and the surrounding area. These young people will be aged 16+ and will be looking to gain vital skills, knowledge and understanding of the industry in which they would like a career. We have an excellent track record of working with employers across Darlington and would really like you to come on board. Apprenticeships With grants available of £1,500* and other incentives, there is no better time to consider an apprentice. With structured training and assessment which is relevant to your organisation’s needs, an apprentice can be an enthusiastic and valuable new addition to your workforce. Your apprentice can quickly become a real asset to your business, improving your company’s productivity and competitiveness, whilst not affecting your bottom line. The apprentice would be aged 16+, earning the Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage minimum of £3.30 per hour for a minimum of 30 hours per week and will have a contract of employment issued by the employer like any other employee. • Daniel Hope (Customer Service Advisor – Darlington Borough Council), said: “Learning & Skills Service gave me a great opportunity to learn valuable knowledge and skills to further develop the skills needed in the workplace. I have successfully completed both a Level 2 in Business and Administration and a Level 3 NVQ in Customer Services. The support given by both the management and colleagues in the workplace and the supportive guidance and training from Barbara, has helped secure a full-time

position within the Customer Services environment and has also widened the horizon for future prospects.” Ofsted stated: “Your apprenticeship programme develops very good technical and vocational skills, which adds value to employers’ businesses” “Employers are confident that the skills developed by apprentices add value to their businesses, such as the joinery subcontractor who says he is two days ahead of schedule due to apprentices fitting skirting boards so skilfully.” Diploma Courses and Elev8 We are also looking for employers to support the Elev8 Programme and Diploma courses by enabling us to offer short and long term work experience to young people aged 16 - 18. The work experience could be anything from one week to 12 months and it would enable the young person to gain vital skills and knowledge in their chosen area, as well as develop their work ethic. The work experience would be for 16 - 18 year olds from a range of backgrounds who are trying to access further education, employment or an Apprenticeship. They will have committed interest in their chosen area of work and will be supported by our training staff throughout their experience. Any specific needs will be discussed at the outset, so that you can decide if the learner would be suitable for your business. Wages are not required; however this is at the employer’s discretion as they may feel the learner deserves some reward for their efforts. This is the ideal way to trial a young person before progressing them onto an Apprenticeship. For more information contact the Learning & Skills Business Support Team on 01325 405601 or l&s@darlington.gov.uk. *subject to terms and conditions

Testimonials

An excellent course given by an enthusiastic and inspiring tutor.

Anonymous - Introduction to Family History

” ” ” ” ” ”

It has been a brilliant 2 years for me - I have gained such valuable skills and knowledge from my workplace that I can now offer to my new employer. Learning in centre has been brilliant; Barbara is always supportive and makes learning interesting. Both Barbara and Ian always had my best interest at heart and went out of their way to help me and offer advice. My line manager has been amazing, couldn’t have been better. All of my colleagues were so friendly and overall I have enjoyed every minute and would like to thank everyone.

Caroline Towers, who completed an Apprenticeship and Advanced Apprenticeship in Business Administration while working in Darlington Borough Council’s HR team, is now employed as a HR Officer with Hitachi Rail Europe in Newton Aycliffe.

I have thoroughly enjoyed attending Italian courses with Shan. She gives us a good challenge but also has a good sense of humour. Caters at the right pace and she gives good feedback and explanations which help me to grasp the Italian language more easily.

Linda - Italian course

I really enjoyed the Dressmaking course. The tutor was brilliant and helped me learn from start to finish. Since moving to London I have started a small business at home making dresses for customers.

I now have the confidence to move on to other courses, I really want to improve my writing I feel ok joining in with a group now.

Intensive Support Learner, Darlington

Sayema - Dressmaking course

Glyn is a really good tutor. I wasn’t confident at first, however he helped me a lot to become confident and put my mind at ease. He makes a good classroom environment. The course has helped me refresh my knowledge on ICT and it is always clear and concise.

Anonymous - Functional Skills ICT (Entry Level 3 – Level 2)

The learning I have had has been fantastic. I think the initial assessment procedure is brilliant. I only started in April 2015 as an Entry Level 2 and now in November 2015 I am on Level 2. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without Glyn who is a very patient teacher. Natasha – Functional Skills ICT (Entry Level 2 - Level 2)

My son was choking on a piece of bread, I knew what to do straight away as we had covered choking in my Family Safety Course the week before - I was so pleased I had completed the course I dread to think what would have happened. Ashley - Family Learning course

Thanks so much. I am so happy that the class is to continue, in view of the cutbacks being announced. I cannot begin to tell you what a difference being able to converse in Italian made to our holiday in Bologna. It was wonderful to be able to speak to, and understand people in shops, restaurants, railway stations etc. My husband was very impressed! Can't wait to learn more.
