St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES

Documentary evidence (eg, a doctor’s certificate) must be provided by the student wherever possible, in support of an illness/misadventure claim. If a student is absent without adequate cause, in the judgment of the College, or without leave being granted by the College, a mark of “zero” will be recorded.

Years 10, 11 & 12 (b) 1.

NOTIFICATION OF ASSESSMENT TASKS Students will be notified, at least ten school days before the due date, about the nature of the task, the syllabus outcomes, the course component/s and the weightings of each component being assessed. A marking criteria for the assessment task will also be included. If for any reason the task needs to be rescheduled, students will be given sufficient written notice of this change of date.

2.

If work is overdue, then the penalty is 10% of the initial available marks per day. For example, if a task was worth 20 marks and it is submitted one day late, then it is marked out of 20 and 2 marks will be deducted from the student’s score. If it is submitted two days late, then it is marked out of 20 and 4 marks will be deducted. Weekends will count as TWO DAYS. If an assessment task is five days late, it is to be scored zero, and the parents will be informed in writing by the Academic Coordinator that the task has not been completed. Students will still be required to complete the set task to a standard acceptable to the College to demonstrate their attainment of some or all of the outcomes. Students seeking extensions should consult with the Head of Department of the course, before the due date, who will liaise with the Academic Coordinator in determining the eligibility for extensions. Trivial reasons for an extension will NOT BE CONSIDERED. Any requests for extensions of time must be submitted on the relevant application from. 3.

If a student knows in advance that they will be unable to attend for a particular task, or if a student is on an excursion on the day an assessment task is due, it is the student’s responsibility to request an extension (in advance).

DEADLINES/PENALITES FOR LATE WORK It is the student’s responsibility to submit all assessment tasks on time. Tasks are to be submitted in class on the due day (or by 3.30pm directly to the Class Teacher or Head of Department of the course if no class is scheduled on that day).

STUDENT ABSENCE OR TEACHER ABSENCE (see the Assessment Handbook for detailed information)

(a)

Student Absence due to Illness / Misadventure It is a student’s responsibility to fulfill all requirements specified in the assessment schedule, including those tasks given during the student’s absence. However, a student who is absent from the school for a particular task, or who is adversely affected during the performance of a particular task, or who is unable to present an assignment for inclusion in the assessment, will not necessarily receive a “zero” mark for that task. Marks based on a substitute task, or in exceptional circumstances an estimate based on other evidence, will be accepted where the College considers the student has a valid reason (eg, illness or misadventure) for not completing that task.

Teacher Absence If a teacher is absent on the day an assessment task is due, students will be expected to submit their work to the substitute teacher or to the Head of Department of the course or by arrangement with the teacher beforehand (see also Point 2). Assessment tasks are NOT to be submitted to the College office staff or other members of the teaching staff.

4.

INVALID ABSENCE If a student is absent from an assessment task without valid explanations, a zero mark is to be awarded for that task.

5.

CHEATING Zero marks may be awarded for assessment tasks where any form of cheating has occurred. This applies to students who cheat or assist others to cheat in any way whatsoever.

6.

UNFAIR ADVANTAGE No student should gain an unfair advantage by having all or part of a task performed by another person. Teachers and Heads of Department must be satisfied that work is a student’s own. Unfair advantage, gained by any method of malpractice, (e.g. plagiarism) if proven, is regarded as cheating and may be scored zero.

7.

USE OF ICT and Storage Devices When making use of computers or storing information pertinent to an assessment task on memory sticks, hard drives and any other device, it is the student’s responsibility to always keep a backup copy. Failure of electronic equipment or loss of information through memory stick, hard drive failure does not warrant an extension. Nor may this be used as an excuse for non-completion of a task. If following these types of technology problems a task is late then the usual penalties outlined above will apply. * Additional Assessment Policies relating to examinations and assessment tasks can be found in the Assessment Handbook for each Year level.
